Poem of the week A Silent Thought by Erin Davey (UIIIL) and Beatrice Learmouth (UIIIB) I sit, watching, waiting For the first frost to land, For the first carol that be sung. I sit in the pews, soundlessly, silently Looking outside from the tall, stained windows, Bearing secrets and stories of that first Christmas Day. I hear the first chime of the heavy bells. I hear the carols full of love and joy, I hear the frosted snowflakes falling from the sky. Quietly, soundlessly I sit, watching, waiting, I look across the isles, The dark capes holding memories of play and snow, Teachers chorusing hush! Be calm! The church is a maze full of mothers, fathers and children, Then finally the first frost lands and everyone stops, Still, frozen. Time has stopped. I see twilight, glide across the sky, Spreading its dark wings over the church. I hear the first frozen note. The piano plays like a soft secret, Twisting and turning into thought. You see, Christmas is a time for love and fun and playing, But sometimes you need to just stop and think, Sometimes you need to be silent.
