“We must obey”: Godstowe held a two-minute silence on Remembrance Day

What a poignant sight. If not a little spooky? Our Remembrance Day service was very special this year, held around the ceramic poppy display.Well done to Mrs Sloggett for masterminding such a wonderful display, and to the girls for making the beautiful poppies. The display will remain in place for the next couple of weeks so take a look if you haven’t done so already.

again this evening. The costumes, scenery and music were, as ever, fantastic and all girls performed their parts superbly. I hope you too enjoyed the production, for those of you that were able to make it. Going back to the photo, I always tell prospective parents that Godstowe does not produce clones - I’m beginning to wonder! Wishing you all a great weekend. DG

I was very impressed with the Middle Division’s performance last night and look forward to seeing it

A special Remembrance Day service at Godstowe Pupils and staff at Godstowe Preparatory School gathered outside on Remembrance Day for a special service set around the school’s very own poppy display. Following war poems and prayers read out by selected pupils, the girls put up the hoods on their cloaks (a traditional part of the school uniform) allowing them to reflect quietly for the two minutes’ silence. The bugle was sounded and the canon that is traditionally set off in the centre of High Wycombe marked the beginning of the two minutes’

silence and another canon marked the end. Following the silence, pupils from Nursery and Pre-Prep took it in turns to lay beautiful wreaths, which they had made in class, by the poppies. The poppy display will remain in place for the next few weeks, after which girls will be able to take their poppy home and a donation made to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Poems of the week A Poppy for a Life

In assembly this week, the girls were captivated by the true story of Singing Jim, a WWI soldier. LIIIH then produced poetry using ideas about Singing Jim as a starting point. Here is Jasmine Adams’ poem.

The man who sang, who sang, who sang Trudged to war while he sang Fight, fight, sing, sing- that was his way In the mud of the trench he sang all day. He sang to God to remember his wife He longed for his calm and peaceful life Finally he sang at his death Which comes to us on Remembrance Day. The poppies that are at the tower Remember him and all the others The poppies in their shiny coats Applaud him like an audience.

An Earthquake An earthquake is an elephant Giant and grey It shakes and groans all day With rumbling jaws and pounding feet It is a giant waiting to leap An earthquake is a rhinoceros Silently it approaches its target Then hurtles forward all set The land is alive with fear It is a tree crashing near An earthquake is a lion It is a force of such power Above all creatures it does tower The people flee down each road It is a bomb waiting to explode

They sing to him, they sing him to sleep When we are asleep they bow to him They will remember him as we weep, For Singing Jim.
