Artwork of the Week
Once again, the Art Exhibition was a big hit last Friday and Saturday I think you’ll all agree with me in saying that it was a huge success and the girls looked fabulous in their 1920s dresses. Again, well done to all of those involved and a special thanks must go to those staff and parents who helped put the whole thing together.
Awarded to: Every pupil in the school for their contribution to the Art Exhibition

I hear we are in for a mini-heatwave this weekend. Good luck to those girls participating in athletics at St Mary’s Ascot tomorrow and I wish the rest of you a great weekend. DG

This week Nursery have been looking at snails and spirals. They have really enjoyed being outside in the lovely weather we have had. Beginners have consolidated their learning about the moon this week and have also learnt about constellations. They are looking forward to their trip to Speen Woods on Wednesday. If it is a sunny day, please be sure to apply sun cream to your child before they come to school. Fingers crossed that it is!

Continuing with their plant topic, Kindergarten learnt how to design a scientific investigation to find out if plants really do need sunlight, water, air and soil to grow. Transition have been learning about prefixes. They all really enjoyed their practical science lesson this week and are now proficient in measuring liquid in litres and 500 mls (pictured below).
This week’s sport
Please may we remind you that we are encouraging Kindergarten and Transition children to come up to their classrooms on their own this term. Teachers use the pre registration slot for one-to-one reading time before assembly each day. Unless it is really urgent, it is always possible to speak to your child’s class teacher in the afternoon at pick up time. We have had several cases of head lice in Lodge this week. We ask that you please check your child’s scalp regularly and treat as suggested by Sister - please see the link in your Godstowe News email. In the sunny weather, please be sure to apply sun cream to your child before they come in to school and that they have their red sun hat with them every day.

Following our Mufti Day, we should like Godstowe to maintain the link and start collecting things on their ‘Wish List’ which will then be taken over to Zambia. Our target over the next week or two is to fill a box with pencils, erasers, pencil

sharpeners, coloured pencils, crayons and 30cm rulers. It would be wonderful if every child in the school could bring something - items do not have to be new, as long as they are in a decent and usable condition. This is a chance to lighten those bulging pencil cases! Children should give donations to their Form Teachers.
Double, double, toil and trouble! Mrs Baker’s 6C English class took to the stage on the lawn outside Walker House this morning for an impromptu performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in the sunshine. Here are some photos for you to enjoy.
Poems of the week Tiger Poem by Indigo Hill Inspired by the painting of a tiger by Samantha Jason
The Lonely Horse by Sadie Foster Inspired by the painting of a horse by Samantha Jason
Charcoal eyes glaring at you Watching as people pass by Hesitating and waiting until the lights turn off Then my tiger is free
One horse, in one field All alone - no one else No friends to talk to No one to turn to
He jumps out of the black card canvas And pounces onto the waxy grass The vibrant green blades blowing in the wind My tiger is free
Through summer , winter, autumn and spring Through sun, snow, wind and rain No friends to talk to No one to turn to
The lights turn on - but where has my tiger gone ? He has vanished into thin air It’s as if he doesn’t care About his canvas so dark and lonely My tiger was lost
I imagine his world With no one there One horse In one field All he wants is one wish
I carried on with my search of the gallery And then it all went wrong I had found my elegant orange tiger In the dark green jungle canvas And I hope that now My tiger is free.
He wants to be set free Free as the wind He waits in the darkness But there is no end No one will ever come.
Iceland Trip 2014 by Kate Larard,Yan Yan Wai, Neneh Gardner, Clara O’Doherty and Charlotte Scopes In Iceland there were many amazing things to see but here are our highlights. When we arrived in Iceland we went straight to the Blue Lagoon. It was heated by geothermal energy. We put on face packs full of minerals and enjoyed the steam room even though it was hard to breathe. Another amazing highlight was the super jeeps. We drove up the side of a volcanic crater and then onto an ice field and through a river. When we got out we had a giant snowball fight and we made sure we all pelted Mrs Cansdale as much as possible! We saw so many wonderful geographical features and even stood on the North America Plate and looked across the plate boundary to the Eurasian Plate. Great Geysir was a pretty smelly place (like rotten eggs) but it was
spectacular when the geysirs spouted high in the air. Gulfoss waterfall was incrediable - parts of the spray had even frozen. We spent a morning down a lava cave with hard hats on to protect us and got told horror stories in the pitch black - really scary! The cultural museum in Rekyhauik was interesting and at the geothermal park we boiled eggs in the hot water to eat with rye bread baked underground. We totally loved our chalets which we stayed in en route to the Black Sands beach. The karaoke there was hilarious and we all loved singing Abba songs. Our last day was incredible. We walked right behind a waterfall getting soaked by the spray along the way, climbed up 400 plus steps to
Seljalandfoss waterfall and then made beach sculptures on the Black Sands beach. There were fascinating basalt columns on the beach which had formed when the lava cooled really quickly. On the way back we stopped at a museum set up by the farmer who lives under the famous ash volcano Eyjaflallajökull which errupted in 2010. We watched footage of the actual eruption which he took and enjoyed seeing the volcano now it is dormant again. It was great to go to the outdoor geothermally heated swimming pool when we got back to our hotel. We loved the slide with disco lights and the hot tubs! Overall it was really fun and we loved our guide Gugga and all wished we could have stayed longer. Photos from the trip can be found in the Photo Gallery on the Godstowe website
