Georgina Howitt My apologies to those playing netball or running cross country tomorrow. I’m afraid I must bail out as I am due to attend the wedding of a good friend and I wasn’t in command of the calendar when this was arranged. Naturally I wish them all every success and will look forward to hearing about it on Monday.

It seems everyone in the Main School thoroughly enjoyed outings day on Wednesday and I heard some
very pleasing reports from the venues and from the staff about our girls. It doesn’t seem possible that half term is only a week away. The Daily Express (so I gather!) claims a mini heatwave is on the way and then a hurricane. We shall see. Until next week have a good weekend. DG

Half Term activities
Donated clothing
Burnham Gymnsatics Club will be open during half term, Monday 27th October – Friday 31st October (10:00am- 3:00pm), It involves a fun packed day of gymnastics open to all levels from novice to squad gymnasts. Activities include: vaulting, tumbling on the air floor, balancing on the beam, swinging on the bars. There is a show at 2:45pm at the end of each day for the parents. Click here to view the application form.
A massive thank you to all parents and girls who kindly donated clothing to the orphans in Northern Greece. You have managed to donated 21 bags of clothing in a week and we can only imagine how useful this will be to the home. Unfortunatly Alison Pana will not be traveling to Greece to see the joy that your gifts will bring but we hope to post a picture to allow you to see the delight that a new wardrobe will bring to these young people.
Hughenden Manor in High Wycombe is also holding various activities in and around half term, including Apple Days, pumpkin carving and autumn crafts. See www.nationaltrust.org.uk for more.
Items will no longer be collected since members of the Hellenic Society leave next week for their pilgrimage.
Main School take trips out on Activities Day
With most of Main School out on trips, it was particularly quiet walking around school on Wednesday. Only the Middles remained, spending the day in the JK Theatre practicing for their upcoming production in November.
Following the same theme as Form II, the Upper Thirds visited the site of Verulamium, the Roman Theatre and museum, enabling the girls to study the way of life of the Romans in Britain and those under power from the 1st to the 5th centuries AD.
Meanwhile, Form I visited Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, which is home to nearly 3,000 animals. The girls visited all sorts of enclosures and saw everything from giraffes to seals.
The Fourths focused on geography and maths during their trip to Wendover Woods, studying the impact that visitors have on the area and also completing an orienteering course.
Mrs Lake took Form II down to Bath to see the Roman Baths. This was particularly appropriate as they will be learning about Roman occupation in Britain during the second half of term. The Lower Thirds headed up to London with Mr Summersgill, visiting the Tower of London and the WWI poppy display - the inspiration behind Godstowe’s own poppy project (see 10th October newsletter).
Poems of the week Leaves of Autumn
See what you must
L is for the lovely sight of leaves, swaying in the air. E is for evergreen trees, holding on to their leaves. A is for animals, darting through the trees. V is for vegetables, being picked from gardens. E is for everything that we are lucky enough to own. S is for swishing leaves that land on damp ground.
Look into my mind, What do you see? Look around to find The box
O is for owls, swooping through trees. F is for families, tucked up safe and warm. A is for apples, raining down from the trees. U is for worms underground, wiggling through the soil. T is for tomatoes, red and ripe. U is for untidy bedrooms of children, waking up. M is for moles, digging fast. N is for the number of leaves in our world. By Lucy Baker (IG)

Taped to the lid Of the little black box A note tells you, “Dare you do? Dare you do not?” “Open me up if you do” You open it up, and in it you find, The key to my life, retold in my mind Loud booms a voice, from inside my head, “Dare you do? Dare you do not?” Unlock this room, go to bed.” You lay down on the bed, close your eyes Wake up floating amongst the skies. Down you plummet, above the sea Gaze onto a boat, coasting waves A beautiful sight, one to crave A girl looks up, contentedly waves. Glide to a dock, onto land Round Clary, onto Clary Up goes the mast, clip on the boom, Wiggle the rudder and grin winch up with a crane, In with a splash, Then moor her to her space. I will come back, another day, Will the wind blow well To sail, Clary and I. Drive back home, Aware of every creak This little Moggy, Trundles along the road, Feel him move through Every gear, and click, click You know throughout you’re in a car Moving with him, sleep is far Morris Minor, elderly chap Minimus, tell us that.
