PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Meet
this month’s featured members, Justin Maloof.
1. When did you join PCA? My wife Laura and I are new to the Porsche world and recently joined PCA (June 2022).
2. What Porsche(s) do you have? While searching for a 987 S, I found an ‘03 986 being sold by the original owner (a collector from San Diego) with only 2,900 miles. He was meticulous with his fluid changes even though he only drove it 100-200 miles a year. It’s basically been garage-kept and covered for 20 years. A 986 tip was not what I had in mind, but I couldn’t pass it up.
3. Where are you from? My wife and I were both raised in Tacoma, WA but have lived in Arizona since 1994.
4. Family? Wife Laura, daughters Mariah (21) and Alia (18), and our pug “Mushu”.
5. Work background or trade? I’ve worked 30 years in the sports industry. I’m currently the COO for USA Pickleball (2013-present). Before jumping to pickleball, I was with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes organization for 16 years (1996-2012).
6. What makes your car(s) special? I think an ’03 with 2,900 miles (now 5,800) in near perfect condition qualifies as special.
MEET A MEMBER
7. Next upgrade? If we’re talking the 986, I would say the IMS in a year or two. If we’re talking about my next Porsche, my heart is still set on a 987 S or 981 S.
8. Have you personalized your car? Two mods thus far but both can be reversed (still have the original parts): Swapped the original 17” wheels for 18” OEM 5-spokes and swapped the CDR-23 stereo for a Pioneer ‘flip out’ touch screen. Personalized plate: BXSEATS
9. Favorite memory with a car? Easy. Earlier this year at the NASCAR Xfinity Race (Martinsville Speedway), USA Pickleball was the car sponsor for the Joe Gibbs Racing Team’s #18 Toyota. As the sponsor, we met with Joe and the driver, Ryan Truex for pre-race photos and had seats in the team’s pit cart during the race.
10. Why did you buy your Porsche(s)? After the NASCAR experience, I was ready to pull the trigger on a sports car. A Porsche has always been at the top of my list and with our daughters grown, the impractically of a roadster was finally doable.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS
CELEBRATES ERNTEDANKFEST AND VETERANS DAY WITH TWO-DAYS OF AWESOME EVENTS
The German Thanksgiving is a celebration of a successful harvest during the months of September or October in Deutschland. This German celebration of the autumn harvest is called “Erntedankfest”. However, in AZPCA Regionland, the Truthuhns (Turkeys) were not ready to be stuffed, roasted, carved, and devoured, to celebrate “Erntedankfest”, so PCA’ers celebrated Thanksgiving in November, along with Veterans Day.
Instead of the usual colorful parade, abundance of food and drink, music, dancing, being merry, and the crowning of the harvest Queen, the Autocross Co-Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A., elected to offer “Two-Days of Awesome” events, one event with a different style, as an appreciation to the members that have supported the Region’s autocross events. In addition, the most important appreciation of all, is for our Veterans for serving in the Armed Forces of our great country.
The first day of the “Two Days of Awesome” event was held on a portion of the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) Road Racecourse on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2022. This type of an event is known as a “Trackcross” or “Time Attack” event. The event was conducted with strict adherence to the PCA autocross safety guidelines whereas, the on-course speed was regulated as would have been for a regular autocross event.
The course was designed in a clockwise direction by the AZPCA Region Renowned Autocross Course Design Team utilizing a good portion of the road racing course with different start and finish areas, utilizing the single (non-contiguous) lap format. The course length was approximately 2 miles from start to finish.
The four racecourse straight-a-ways had slalom elements to reduce the car’s speed. On the other hand the sixteen turns were completely open (unrestricted) and the drivers were able to select their lines as they traversed the course.
Forty-three drivers drove the autocross safety-modified road racecourse with three single laps in the morning session and four single laps in the afternoon session. For this event, the course had to be designed with a single-lap format as opposed to the contiguous/multi-lap format normally held on the skidpad.
The penalty assessments were a higher factor for this event as an incentive to keep the drivers safe. The cone penalty was fiveseconds each as opposed to the usual two-second penalty for each displaced cone. If the driver failed to keep his/her car on the course pavement and was on an agriculture excursion (in the
STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL
dirt), a strike for each tire touching the dirt surface was assessed and any driver that had four strikes was finished for the day.
Several of our PCA member drivers were overheard commenting about the course and event. Marc T. related he brought his German non-Porsche make car out for this event because his 914 did not have enough gears to get around the course quickly.
Matttteo S. is a PCA member with the Road Runner Region and he decided to join in our fun of Two-Days of Awesome. Matteo stated that this was a “Laid Back” event and well organized, and the weather was “Great”. Dave Y. said there definitely was a “Little More Pucker Factor” and this was the first time he ever used third gear for an autocross event.
Andrew G., is a first-time autocrosser but has done numerous Driver Education (DE) events. Andrew related “so Far So Good” having fun but, he was not used to having slalom elements on a road racing course and he is looking forward to more autocross events. Eric T. stated the event was a good event and he was “Cone Free” for this event. This wasn’t Eric’s first autocross event on the road course. He remembers doing the autocross on the track events in 2018 and 2019.
Scott K., son of Eric and Tammy, who recently transferred from the Northeast Region this year, is a driver in the Junior PCA program. In 2019, Scott acquired a 2009 Porsche Boxster “S” for only $600 (Yes, there are only two zeros after the “6”) and has been working on the car to get it autocross worthy. Prior to this event, Scott only had three autocross events of experience.

ALL TIMES ARE RAW ADD 5 SECONDS FOR EACH CONE
Since June, 2021, Scott has been involved with the PCA Sim Racing program and it appears that experience has helped him to prepare for this event.
Tammy K., Scott’s mother, said; this was “So Much Fun” so was watching the “F35’s from Luke Air Force Base” fly by. Dave M., said “it was fun to do this once in a while”.
Ealing J., D.E. Safety Coordinator, brought out his Carrera “S” with a newly race prepared 4.5 engine. Ealing stated that the car was “Very Happy” and liked the course. Jonathan B. (a.k.a. “Ricky Bobby”) said; “Not too bad with cones, had to learn new braking points before braking for the turns”. Ricky Bobby stated that he was a “little sloppy” in the slaloms.

A-X
Brad K. stated its good and a lot of fun. An old guy like me would have needed a walker to get around the course if we had to walk the course, thank God for the parade lap drive around before the start of the event. Would like to see more of these events.
Mathias A., related “Awesome, my car is a “Grocery Getter” however, it did well on the track. Would like to see more of these events on the track”. Jason B. is an almost AZPCA member with an application in the works. Although, this event was his first PCA event and he is far from being a “Newbie” autocrosser. He has a lot of autocross driving experience with another sports car club.
Every driver had “BIG” wide smiles when they came off the course after their runs and some drivers had the “Shakes” (both of their hands shaking). In the autocross world, that is a positive/ cool sign that they had a killer run and more fun that anyone can imagine. Believe me, that is a really good feeling.
There were four members that attended their first AZPCA Region autocross event. Garry J. was driving his 2008 Porsche Carrera 4S and his best lap time was 138.470 seconds. New AZPCA Region member, Logan K., drove his 2015 Porsche Carrera Turbo and his best lap time was 123.923 seconds. Logan attended the New Members Day event and he decided to see how much fun he could have at an AZPCA Region Autocross event. Both Garry and Logan picked the mother of all autocross events, for their first AZPCA autocross event. Looks like both Garry and Logan have that AZPCA Region autocross spirit.
Unfortunately, Eric K. was unable to attend this “Two-Days of Awesome” events with his 2009 Porsche Cayman S so Tammy brought out the Cayman and Scott drove his Boxster. Tammy’s best lap time was 136.351 seconds and Scott’s best lap time was 140.589 seconds.
Andrew G., drove his 2021 Porsche Cayman 718 GT4. Andrew’s best lap time was 135.671 seconds.
The AZPCA Region would like to welcome Garry, Logan, and the Eric K. family. Hopefully, we will see Garry, Logan, Eric, Tamara, and Scott, and Andrew, at future autocross events.
In Group “P” there were fourteen Porsche drivers with a variety of “P” cars (Boxster, Caymans, Carreras and a Carrera Turbo). Jason B., in his 2022 Porsche Cayman GT4, lead the Porsche Car contingent with his best lap time of 117.290 seconds followed by Ealing J. in his 2012 Porsche Carrera “S” and his best lap time was 119.701 seconds. Our new member Logan K. was a slight distant third in his 2015 Porsche 911 Turbo “S” and his best lap time was 123.923 seconds.
In Group “X”, there were five AZPCA Region members driving their “other car” for this event. Member “Ricky Bobby” (Jonathan B.) led the other car contingent, and his best lap time was 119.215 seconds, and he was followed by Mathias A., and his best lap time was 128.8765 seconds. In third place was Kenny M. and his best clean lap time was 129.812 seconds.

Finally, Dave Y. was able to make his PCA Autocross Event maiden-voyage with his new 2022 Porsche Cayman GTS. Dave’s best lap time was 128.968 seconds. There is no doubt that Dave will get a lot faster as he gets accustomed to his new car.
The second day of “Two-Days of Awesome event was held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, which resumed on the AMP Skid pad with the usual AZPCA Autocross contiguous/multilap format. The Autocross Course Design Team designed a clockwise direction course with one optional directional slalom and several gates and sweeper elements. Thirty-nine drivers took to the course with three timed laps in the morning session and four timed laps in the afternoon session, and the drivers had a great time.
The drivers were still overly excited from all the fun they had driving on the track the day before and they had a hard time coming back to an “autocross reality” were as the straightaways were shorter by hundreds of feet and the corners/turns were closer together and the course transitions came up a lot quicker. Well drivers, wait until next year.
There were thirteen Group “P” drivers, mostly in Cayman variants (two-GT4s; one-GTS’; and six-S’) and seven of the Cayman variants dominated the top seven spots. One-Boxster “S”, one-Carrera4 “S”, one-Panamera GTS, and a 968 were also vying for top time of the group.
Almost new AZPCA Region member, Jason B., in his 2022 Porsche Cayman GT4 commanded the lead with his best lap time of 47.911 seconds and Martin R., in his 2007 Porsche Cayman “S”, was trying to catch Jason’s time. Martin’s best lap time was 49.814 seconds. Kenny M., in his 2015 Cayman GTS, was a short distance behind Martin for the third best time of the group with a 50.363 second lap time.
In Group “X”, Ealing J. was fastest of the two AZPCA Region members in this group with his best lap time of 49.573 seconds and Jonathan B. followed Ealing with his best lap time of 50.648 seconds. It appears that both Jonathan and Ealing had to settle for split wins over each other for these “Two-Days of Awesome”. It is our understanding that it doesn’t make a difference which car either driver is driving as long as they drive faster than the other one. Did we hear right that the bet is the slower driver has to treat the other with “Ice Cream” after the event?
It appears that we may have a new prospect for being the “Top Cone Killer” for the 2022-2023 season, at least he is starting out with a record setting of total number of cones for one event. Our almost new AZ PCA Region member, Jason B. put a total of six cones to a permanent rest followed by Marshall B. with four Cone Kills”. Eric T., our 2021-2022 Autocross Season honoree, may feel somewhat relieved by having other drivers stepping up for this annual prestigious award. Eric only had two kills for this event.
The first event of the season was originally scheduled in October and unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the hazardous weather conditions. So, the awarding of the 2021-2022 Season “Top Cone Killer” award was moved to the first day of the “TwoDays of Awesome event.
During the Driver’s Safety meeting, the Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A., called Eric T. to come forward and be recognized and to present him
In addition to the “Top Cone Killer” Award, there could be a new year-end recognition presented to a driver for the most driving “oops” for this season. At this time, the name of that recognition award will remain under wraps until the end of the season. You can be rest-assured that there will be statistics collected on each driver that commits an “oops”. An award will be presented to the driver with the most “oops” accumulated for the season.
Just so you know, there were no “Truthuhns” harmed nor were any beer/wine festivities conducted during this Erntedankfest celebration and “Two-Days of Awesome”. Although, the drivers and the “Taste of Autocross” entrants were treated to a BBQ lunch provided by the Region and “yes”, there is still a free lunch in the AZPCA Autocross world.

The next event is scheduled for December 10, 2022 at AMP on the Skid pad. The registration closes on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 3:00PM. The registration for this event is well underway and as with the November events being a sell-out, and there is no doubt this event will be sold out way before the registration deadline. Don’t wait and get placed on the waitlist.
Don’t forget that if the driving part does not suit you just yet, a driver in the event can always sign you up for the “Taste of Autocross” and this will get you close to the action without being a driver. You will be able to ride with an experienced driver and can work the event. Oh yeah, then there is the “Free Lunch”, that every driver and a “Taste of Autocross” get for signing up for an AZPCA Region autocross event. The cost for participating in the “Taste of Autocross” program is only $15.00 and friend or spouse autox entrant must sign you up using their MotorsportReg account, you need to complete both the electronic Speed and AMP waivers.
If you have any questions regarding the AZPCA Region autocross program, please feel free to contact the Autocross Co-Chairs, Kim K. and/or Rick A., at autocross@az.pca.org
The MSR registrations for the remainder of the 2022-2023 autocross season are now active. You shouldn’t wait because they will fill up fast to avoid being waitlisted.
The Autocross Co-Chairs wish everyone a fun and safe holiday season and don’t forget, the AZPCA Region Holiday Party is Saturday, December 17, 2022, register at https://www. motorsportreg.com/events/annual-holiday-partyat-grayhawk-golf-club-pca-arizona-054477 for a fun evening.

Porsches and Pancakes at Ajo Al’s
CONTRIBUTED BY JUSTIN MALOOF PHOTOS BY DENNIS ROOD
As a new AZPCA member (June '22), I was finally able to attend my first Porsches and Pancakes event on Saturday, October 22 at the Ajo Al's Mexican Cafe in Glendale.
Anytime you're a newcomer to the group, there's always a little apprehension but Dennis welcomed me and made me feel right at home. I had the pleasure of sitting with long-time members, Richard and Vickie Wyatt and they shared details of their club experience, and the various types of outings and events that are offered throughout the year. I am certainly looking forward to attending more club events, meeting more members and learning what I can about these great cars.

Porsches and Pancakes at EGGstacy
CONTRIBUTED BY CEL LEAL
My wife Lori and I were members of the Arizona PCA from 2004 to 2013 before moving back to Utah. We just moved back to Cave Creek in July and have since rejoined the club. It's nice to be back and catch up with old friends and meet new friends through club events such as this one.
My thanks to Dennis Rood for organizing the Porsches and Pancakes at EGGstasy. We had twenty-seven members signed up and split over a couple of tables. The food was great and by the looks of the crowd that morning, others shared my views.
On the way to breakfast I received a call from Jim Roberts, who was concerned if he was at the right restaurant. Jack and Loretta Aman were also there but if you know these three you know they like to arrive early to events. It appears they got there early and were concerned that they may have gone to the wrong EGGstasy location as they did not see any familiar faces. After checking the registration email we assured them they were at the correct location.
Oh yes, a word of caution. If you happen to sit next to Dennis at the next breakfast event be prepared to take notes and pictures as you may be asked to write the next article.
See you at the next Arizona PCA event.

Angela Manente From the EDITOR
This month Mark and I celebrate our 13th AZPCA anniversary. Wow! I can't even begin to count all the events we have attended. There are always some that you never forget; such as the Vegas Fun Runs, Valentine Date Night, Hot Air Balloon trip, drives to Sedona and Flagstaff, PCA National Treffens and of course the many Alpine weekends. There is one PCA event we haven't done and that is Parade. Next year it will be in Palm Springs, June 18-24, 2023.
Now is the time of the year to thank everyone who has taken the time to write an article/story and took pictures at our events for Going Places. Special kudos to Peter Veith, who drove down to the Wilcox DE to take pictures and Connor McKlain for all the Phoenix Flight 44 photos. Remember "It's not just the cars, it's the people."
After being the editor for over 6 years, I will be passing this responsibility over to, Gregg and Ali Bull. Can you see the big smile on my face? We will work together and transition over the next few months. Thank you Gregg and Ali for volunteering.
This month the winner for the Writer's Award for Going Places is Scott Faris for "AZPCA's First Official Time Trials Event." He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA event.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Happy New Year and any other holiday I might have missed!
Looking forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

On November 5 and 6, 2022, the Arizona Region held its first official time trials sessions as part of the weekend’s HPDE event. The event was held at Inde Motorsports Ranch about 12 miles from Wilcox, Arizona.
Through the diligent work of HPDE chair Dan Bouet and a host of other enthusiasts over an approximate period of two years, the Club’s Board of Directors approved adding time trials to HDPE events at its October meeting. Part of that approval included the purchase of 10 transponders which can and now have been rented to participants who do not own their own transponder.
You might ask why transponders are necessary in an age of widespread use of GPS-based timing apps and devices and that is a good question. The simple answer is that as good as GPS technology is, it is just not accurate enough and consistent enough to time laps for a number of drivers to the nearest 1/1000 of a second. Everyone in a time trials event must be given the best opportunity to demonstrate their track negotiation skills using a system that is fair to all participants. Because of this timing technology, only tracks that have built-in timing loops and the software to manage timing and participant data will be used by the Club for time trial events. Inde
near Casa Grande, Arizona.
| 24 |
Motorsports Ranch is one of those tracks as well as the Podium Club at Attesa, which is
In fact, the Club’s next time trials event will be held at the Podium Club on December 3, 2022. There are other tracks that have this technology as well and they may possibly be considered for future events. For this HPDE season at least, Inde and the Podium Club will be the only facilities where time trial sessions will be held within the regular HPDE schedule.
Here are some details of the first time trial sessions. Fifteen drivers signed up for the sessions, eight of whom rented their transponder from the Club. The transponders are each affixed to either the front or rear of the car on a temporary mount that was either screwed into the license plate space or zip-tied somewhere on the car. The temporary mounts were then removed at the end of the weekend by the drivers. Both Porsche and non-Porsche cars participated, and the track’s timing system was able to assign a class to each car. For this event we used two Porsche classes, 911/GT3 and Cayman/GT4. Variants of those models such as GT3 RS and Boxster were included in their respective broader class. The nonPorsche cars were all placed in one class.
We want to congratulate the winners of the first time trial events, whose identities and times are shown on the tables on page 27. Because the track at Inde was run clockwise on Saturday and anti-clockwise on Sunday, the times were markedly different for each day. And because there was such a large contingent of drivers, especially on Saturday, we divided the cars into two groups based on their times to avoid having cars passing each other on their timed laps. We also released the cars between 12 and 15 seconds apart with the idea that they would not catch each other on track over a three hot-lap session. These measures worked out pretty well on our first event and will form the basis of the procedure for the next event at the Podium Club.
We also want to thank the many people involved in the Club and at the Inde facility for their excellent work and cooperation in staging this successful event.

Next Porsche generation in training!
In closing, if you have ever wondered how your car and driving skills stack up against others in the Club, then perhaps time trials is the optimal way to answer that question. The costs of sessions and transponder rentals are quite reasonable within the context of already participating in the HPDE event. And time trials are way less stressful and expensive compared to wheel-to-wheel competition in a racing event.
Please consider joining us next month at the Podium Club or at our final time trials event of the season back at Inde on March 25 and 26, 2023.

A FUTURE WE CAN BE PROUD OF
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
At heart, I’m an optimist. I’m optimistic about the year ahead. And the years to follow, too.
But it won’t be simple. It never is. A number of years ago I worked for a tech firm, whose share price, in the late ‘90s, was treading water on par with Apple. Then Steve Jobs introduced the smartphone, and Apple’s stock zoomed into another galaxy. And my company? We continued to tread water. Just like the pile of stock and stock options I had. If I had been hitched to Apple, today I’d be calling my pilot to warm up my jet, so we could head to Rio for the Grand Prix.
Then there’s the analogy of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. I remember seeing newsreels of the event, showcasing the wondrous future we were all destined to enjoy.
Well, they got a few things wrong. Like a certain altercation that started in September of that year. Another was this diorama of a city of the future. They had a lot right. Superhighways zipping around glass-sheathed high-rise towers. Stuff like that.
But the planes. The planes. No, they weren’t bi-planes. But they were, indeed, all propeller-driven. Deriving power from radial internal combustion engines. Any jet engines in the visage? No. Jet engines, while they may have been under development, had several more years to go before they were introduced to a working airframe. Obviously, the diorama designers did not know jet engines existed, much less how they would revolutionize air travel.
Jump up to the 1964 New York World’s Fair. That one I remember. One fun exhibit featured a “picture phone,” I believe at the AT&T or Bell Labs pavilion. What a marvel it was … it only took another 40 years for the product to reach the market.
The point is, it’s patently impossible to predict the future with much of a degree of accuracy. We just don’t know what technology will take hold, and what won’t, and when that hold will happen.
We see that today. Electric (EV) cars have been around for 120 years. My understanding is that, in the early 1900s, the automobile market was evenly divided three ways – steam, EV and internal combustion. ICE won, mainly because the price of powering movement, gasoline, had reached an affordable level.
And the convenience of “filling up” far outweighed the time to charge the battery or literally build up a head of steam. And, of course, the advent of the assembly line, thanks to Henry Ford, didn’t hurt.
Isn’t it ironic that battery technology continues to be a challenge for EVs, after all these years. Range between charges, the time to charge, the weight of the battery pack. Will EVs really take off? The government thinks so. And manufacturers, around the world, seem to think so too. Although they’re all hedging their bets, at least to a certain extent, by continuing to produce ICE vehicles.
What about hydrogen? With hydrogen power, water comes out the tailpipe. Yes, water. Are we at the 1964 World’s Fair for hydrogen power? I don’t have a clue.
What I do know is that, deep inside a lab somewhere, somebody is probably experimenting with technology that, through unprecedented efficiency, or weight, or emissions decrease, or all of the above, will turn the power source debate on its ear. But when? Ahh, there’s the rub.
Then you have autonomous cars. Cars that drive themselves. I thought they’d be here by now. But little did I know about the complexity of writing an algorithm for the vehicle that accounts for the moral dilemma between swerving into a light pole to avoid a dog running into the road … or swerving into oncoming traffic.
It’s too bad. I’ve been looking forward to their advent. Not because I actually want one, but because they’ll free us enthusiasts to take the long way home. Think of it. While everyone tootles down the freeway in lockstep, you’ll have the back roads largely to yourself.
And parking. After a fun day shuttling people around, the autonomous vehicles will all head back to the shed, for maintenance and to be charged up, for another fun day of shuttling people around … leaving parking spots! On the street!
Oh, I’m looking forward to the New Year. And the years beyond. And I’m ready for it. My manual everything but the windows and sunroof 911 is gassed and ready. For whichever way the road turns.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES
BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION
CORVETTE 70 Years the one and only, by Richard Prince
CORVETTE 70 Years the one and only, by Richard Prince, published 18 October 2022 by Motorbooks, Beverly, Massachusetts, USA.
This is an outstanding book; an excellent example of the publishing art. The stark black covers are highlighted with color profiles of a year-one car on the front cover; year 70 car on the back. These covers are more elegant and impressive than the dust jacket and will stand out on any coffee table. The end papers present a lineup of every model throughout the series. It is a classy, elegant publication telling a story of more engineering and racing focus than many people expect to be part of the Corvette ethos.
The inside of this book is very well illustrated with many full page pictures, crisply presented on the heavyweight matte pages. I counted only seven (out of 256) pages as all text with no illustration. The modern photography is outstanding; the historic pictures are informative snapshots from times gone by. The typeface is readably large and there is a generous amount of white space.
Thirty chapters break the history into concise chunks. The chapters are not purely chronological with some chapters focused on styling, others on engineering, economics or racing. Other chapters focus on the design and introduction of the various models from the C1 through the current midengined C8 models, which are described as having antecedents from the CERV cars of the late '50s.
CORVETTE 70 Years begins with a well told story of how the Corvette grew out of a 1951 sports car race at Watkins Glen, NY. Detailed description is provided of how Corvette's recovery from initial marketing failure was achieved by a developmental focus on luxury, as the Corvette evolved from a very basic 'Speedster' like configuration into the luxurious boulevard cruiser it's initial promotion had promised.
There was gear-head oriented evolution as well. For instance, as early as 1956 there was a production option to duct air from the front grill to cool the rear brakes, and Corvette's early adoption of fuel injection systems (in 1957) and their continuous improvement is well covered by this book. An amazing number of production options and configuration changes are mentioned, many described in detail, complete with prices. The C-3 version, which lasted 15 years, had many features that experienced 'continuous improvement' during the run.
Many individuals are named as being involved in conceiving and executing the evolution between and within the various 'C' generations of Corvettes. As a car book, this is one places heavy emphasis on people and their participation in the history and success of the Corvette, as automobile and as a company.
Racing is indicated as essential to establishing early Corvettes in the market. After the AMA ban, much of the racing described was conducted by privateers. Starting in 1985, Chevrolet got back into the racing business courtesy of the efforts of a number of individuals described in detail.
There is Porsche Content in this book including and an interesting tidbit that Dr. Dick Thompson, the man that so famously raced the Stingray Corvettes, raced Porsches before shifting to Corvettes in 1956. The very comprehensive index has four pages, each with six columns of terse entries, including 16 entries for 'Porsche', and five entries for Tony Lapine who, after practicing on Corvettes, became Chief Designer for Porsche and 'fathered' the 924-928 trans-axle cars.
CORVETTE 70 Years has 256, 12 x10 inch heavyweight pages, with 250 images, mostly in color. . By the time you read this it should be available for $60.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from Amazon.com.
