he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured member, Rafael Buerba.
1. When did you join PCA? I joined PCA in August.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have? I have a 2015 Boxster S.
3. Where are you from?
Originally, Mexico City..but I moved to Phoenix at age 13. I thus call Phoenix my home despite having lived in 5 different states.
4. Family?
Immediate family is in Phoenix, the rest of the extended family is in Mexico City.
5. Work background or trade?
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder surgeon.
6. Work makes your car special?
It is stick shift! Not that many newer cars are stick shift. I also bought it with only 5k miles so it was practically new. It is also beautiful and fun to drive.
7. Next upgrade?
911 Turbo....probably not for several years.
8. Have you personalized your car? No. It was perfect as is.
9. Favorite memory with a car?
My Dad has been a Porsche enthusiast all of his life. He always wanted to own one and didn’t get to own one himself until he was in his early 50s. It was an older 944, but still awesome. His dream had always been to buy a Porsche from the dealership or to have one of his sons buy one from the dealership with him. When I purchased the Boxster from the dealership it was like a dream come true for him. Seeing his face and joy has been one of my happiest moments.

C ha i r
10. Why did you buy your Porsche?
As mentioned above, my father got me really hooked on Porsches since a young age. I also had a long commute that was kind of boring in my VW SUV. Once I had saved up enough money, I wanted to buy a fun car that was stick shift so that I could enjoy my commute in style. My Boxster S was the perfect car for this!
11. High school nickname? Buerbs
12. Top 3 cars you would own? 911 Turbo, GT3 and Taycan.

I
can’t believe that Mark and I have been members of the Arizona region for 12 years! Where has the time gone? How about a lot of driving tours, one or two AutoX/DEs, holiday parties, lots of member meetings and let’s not forget Porsches and Pancakes. We have also changed out our Porsche(s) during this time. How many you ask? Too many! The one I miss the most was our 1982 Porsche 911 SC in Rosewood Metallic. It was our first one and will always be my favorite. Loved having a stick shift. Special thank you to Lisa and Richard Cvijanovich at Porsche Chandler for hosting our November member meeting. It was a great evening. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write stories/articles and take pictures at our AZPCA events for Going Places, because without your participation there would be no monthly newsletter/magazine. Kudos to Peter Veitch, who drove down to Willcox just to take pictures at the DE event. After being the editor for over 5 years, it would be nice to have an assistant to help out. If anyone is interested give me a call at 952-240-4292 or send me an email at: gpeditor@az.pca.org This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Jim Bultema for contributing “Giving Back-Mesa Community College Tour.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Happy New Year and any other holiday I might have missed. Looking forward to seeing you in person at one of our upcoming events in the new year.

We have many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60, and early December is a great time to take the drive on the “Five 7s”; Highway 177, Highway 77, and Highway 79. Great sweeping curves and long straightaways. Our group will drive east on Hwy. 60 past Superior, AZ. Head south on AZ 177 south past the Asarco Ray Mine. Unfortunately, access to the mine overlook is closed. If they don’t open it up by our tour date here is a link to a virtual tour of the mine: ASARCO Ray Mine in Kearny, Arizona - YouTube. AUTOCROSS
AUTOCROSS SEASON SERIES 2021/2022 EVENT #2 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTOS BY PHIL VEITH CREATIVE
driving sessions and the drivers were catered to an AZPCA Region provided Deli style lunch rather than a Hotdog style lunch.
AZPCA Region Autocross Series Event #2 was held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP). The weather was perfect for an AZPCA Region Autocross Event. The temperature was cool during the early morning hours but, by the start of the event, the temperature was AZPCA Region Autocross perfect. Again, the event was sold out before the close of registration. This event had a variety of Porsche cars negotiating a very challenging and interesting course. There were several Boxsters, Caymans, and Carreras; and a Panamera, GT3 RS, Carrera Turbo, 968, and a 914 competing at this event. The Autocross Chairs, Kim K., and Rick A., designed a fun course with some challenging segments that required you to look WAY ahead and test your braking skills. There were a couple of segments if you entered too fast you would end up driving pass your turning point and running over a few cones. In some course designs, such as this one, sometimes slow is fast. There were four continuous laps with each lap separately timed in the morning session and three separately timed laps in the afternoon session. The top lap time of the day was driven by Kim K., in his GT3 RS, with a time of 43.630 seconds. Among other fast Porsches, Martin R. in his Cayman S followed Kim with a time of 45.206 seconds; and Eric S., in his Carrera S, with a time of 45.638 seconds. Jon R., drove his Cayman S, with a time of 45.976 seconds. Kenny M., captured fast time on race tires with a 43.854. There was a lunch break between the morning and afternoon | 20 |
The drivers were also discussing and comparing their morning times. Some drivers were exchanging information about their car suspension setups and giving course driving tips. The drivers had “BIG SMILES” as they discussed their runs.
Marc T. decided to attend the event with a popular Porsche Autocross Car of yesteryear, a 914 2.0. Marc’s 914 appeared to be basically stock, and he drove his 914 to a time of 49.732 seconds. This was a very respectful time as he bested several other drivers in later Porsche models that were powered by the Porsche Flat Six engine with a minimum horsepower rating of at least 275 such as, Cayman S, Boxster S, Carreras. Nice driving Marc. Drivers – just so you know, Marc’s 45-year-old vintage 914 only has a 95 horsepower 4-cylinder engine with 116-foot pounds of torque and there’s no doubt that he had the go-pedal mashed all the time with maybe a couple of lifts. Scott O. elected to bring out his Panamera to the event instead of his Carrera. Scott’s best time was in the afternoon session with a time of 52.879 seconds. Scott’s time was quite impressive for flogging a car that weighed 2 ½ tons, depending on the options. It is not easy to drive a 2 ½ ton car on an autocross course with several sharp turns and a couple of slaloms throwing that much weight around. Jim B., AZPCA Region, Director At Large, attended this event in his Porsche 718 Cayman. A couple years ago, Jim attended an event that was held on a portion of the Racetrack as an autocross event. This event was Jim’s first event on the Skid Pad with a sea of cones and his best time was driven in the afternoon session. Jim’s wife, Carole, also attended the event, as a guest. She was there to support and cheer for Jim. Jim and Carole also attend other Region activities and they are very active in the Club.
Marc’s vintage 914
Scott in action, maneuvering his Panamera.
There were three drivers who tied for being the “Top Cone Killer” for this event. The honors go to Marc T., in his 914 2.0; William P., in his Boxster S; and Eric T., in his Cayman S, each had a total of three kills for this event. Although, these three drivers tied for this prestigious mentioning of being a “Cone Killer”, they only killed one cone at a time on separate laps. But, cone kills are cone kills and they add up in order to qualify for a mentioning. As they say, if you’re not killing a cone a time or two, then you’re probably not driving close enough to them. The point is, get close and scare them, but don’t kill them. Are you still wondering what is an autocross and how much fun can be had if you entered? Well, there are two options you can choose to determine if you want to give this a try without driving your car. You can sign up for the “Taste of Autocross” or as a “Volunteer”.
Discussing some of the finer details!
If you sign up for the “Taste of Autocross” you will be allowed a ride with an approved Driving Instructor or a designated driver. You will get to see first-hand what a driver does while negotiating the course and the fun-factor to be had if you were driving your own Porsche Car.

WEEKDAY DRIVE TO BAGDAD STORY AND PHOTOS BY RICH ANDRADE
O
n October 20, we had our first weekday AZPCA drive. It was a success in all ways, 56 club members and guests attended driving 35 Porsches. Thanks go to Rook and Debbie for yet another perfectly organized event. Attendance was large enough that we split into two separate drive groups with lead and sweep drivers . We enjoyed the early morning socializing and the drivers meeting ensures we’re all informed and driving safely.
I had a great view from behind as well from in front.
Did Rook arrange for the freshly applied black road sealer? | 24 |
Our first stop was 15 minute break just outside of Wickenburg on HWY 93.
Rook’s Route Never the shortest or most direct. Always the most twisty and fun route.
The red dot marks our path. We headed up HWY 89 from Congress in the direction towards Prescott. We turned left on Kirkland Valley Road (County Rt 15), then to HWY 96 and then left on HWY 97. Just before reaching US 93, we stopped at a brake check area, took photos and then backtracked and drove to our lunch location, the Copper Country Bar and Grill in Bagdad.
The brake check area had likely never seen so many Porsches.

Our final stop was at the brake check area on HWY 96, just before the junction with HWY 93. My Porsche 928 was the ONLY 928 in the group and also was the oldest Porsche in the group.
We had our own private dining room and ordered from a choice of three menu items. We dined at the bar, where I learned that the original bar top was once was the longest continuous bar in Yavapai and Maricopa Counties.
What is Bagdad, Arizona? (source: Wikipedia) It isn’t Baghdad, Iraq. Supposedly a father and son operated a small-scale copper mining operation there in the late 1800s. The father dug out the ore and the son loaded it into bags. When one bag was full he asked his father "Do you have a bag, dad?" Bagdad is a copper mining community in Yavapai County, Arizona. It is one of only two remaining company towns in Arizona. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. In 1882, prospectors W.J. Pace and J.M. Murphy staked a claim for gold, silver, and lead along Copper Creek. In 1883, John Lawler of Prescott, Arizona paid Pace and Murphy $200 for their claims, but were unable to make a success of it. In 1907, the Giroux Syndicate purchased an option on Lawler's claims for $200,000 (equivalent to $6,000,000 in 2020), with Edmond Bronson as president. However, the mine was still not able to earn a profit, and operations languished off and on for years. In 1944, the operation was purchased by John C. Lincoln, the builder of the Camelback Inn, who converted the mine entirely from underground operation to open-pit. In 1979, the operation was purchased by AMOCO Minerals, eventually owned by Cyprus Mines. Cyprus Mines Corporation operated the copper mine until Cyprus merged with Phelps Dodge.Freeport-McMoRan (which acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007) now operates the copper/molybdenum mine. This copper mine does open pit mining and runs on an aroundthe-clock schedule. The copper concentrate is either trucked to southern Arizona, or taken by semi to 20 miles outside of town to a small railroad community named Hillside.
Bagdad is one big open pit mine. I’ll bet that on a future trip, Rook will arrange it so we can drive our Porsches down into the mine … well maybe those who are driving Porsche Cayennes. | 26 |
MEMBERSHIP MEETING AT PORSCHE CHANDLER MEMBERSHIP MEETING CHAIRS, JIM & CAROLE BULTEMA
Huge Turnout !
T
here is something about complementary meals and Porsches. And so it was at our November meeting from our gracious host at Chandler Porsche. With their Service Department so clean we could have eaten off the floor and Porsches of all descriptions on the sales floor, there was plenty to see (and to drool over). With what must be near a record, 124 members came together to hear from the owner of Porsche Chandler, Richard Cvijanovich and his General Manager, Joseph Akers. While enjoying a delicious meal of lasagna, the collected Porsche enthusiasts listened intently about how the “chip” shortage is impacting business and their ability to maintain inventory. While Porsche Chandler is still getting stock in, Mr. Cvijanovich thought the return to normalcy might not occur until the second quarter of 2022. Adjusting the Membership Meeting format, President Mark Baker gave a shortened presentation allowing for more socializing and simply catching up with new and old friends. Looking ahead to future meetings, we have several fun dinners scheduled These include the exciting venue at Alpio’s in December, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in January, and then McILvain Motors in February. Where we will have a tour, our meeting and a program by the owner, Scott McIlvain. After this we will make the short eight-minute drive to Lucille’s Smokehouse for the best BBQ dinner around. We gather on the first Wednesday of each month, except in sweltering July. Hope to see you at a meeting soon! Jim and Carole
Great group of Porsche folks!

GIVING BACK: Scholarship Recipients and Mesa Community College Tour STORY AND PHOTOS BY JIM BULTIMA, Director at Large
O
ver the past year there has been a discussion about the club having an educational impact on the technicians that service our cars. It is something we all take for granted. We drop off our car, the work is done, and we pick it up, rarely ever meeting the person that turned a wrench to ensure the work was done properly. All this changed recently when Angela Manente, editor of Going Places, researched information into providing scholarships for Automotive Services students, presented her recommendations to our Board of Directors (AZPCA). After discussion, the board unanimously approved our club awarding $10,000 to Mesa Community College. It was for two full scholarships of two very deserving students. Learning how life changing this was to the students, I wanted to share our club’s effect on their lives. Austin Connally Here is a young man living in an apartment and working forty-hour weeks in his attempt to make ends meet. Our club’s donation “has allowed me to not pull any loans to pay for my education. It has helped me financially so that I can put my money elsewhere to help with either saving, or things like food or gas for transportation….Finishing my degree has been something I have looked forward to since before I even started with MCC. The Associates Degree in Automotive Service will impact my life by showing employers that I have the dedication to complete long-term goals. Thank you so much for your support.” Matthew Gregson Here is another student who never considered college as no one in his family had ever gone. He said you were expected to get a job right out of high school, and he did. Ten years later “I meet a widowed mom with two young sons, and we fell in love and got married.” After loosing his job during COVID he told his wife not to worry he would find the first job that came along. But his wife had grown up differently. She went to college as did everyone in her family and challenged Matthew to set an example for their two boys and to find out what kind of job he really wanted. As he said, “I honestly did not know. I have bounced around a little….I started MCC with welding and then jumped over to automotive. I am now applying for the Empire CAT program. The scholarship I have received has been a blessing that has allowed me to pursue this amazing opportunity. I am the first person in my entire family to attend college and I am proud of that. Thank you for your support. Recently, members from our board of directors along with Angela, were invited by Mr. Christos J. Chronis, Development Director and “Advisor to Generous People,” and Mr. Steve Skroch, the Program Director for the Automotive Service, to tour MCC so see just what our two scholarship students were being taught.
We toured the massive department with everything from 3-D printers, to robotics, to computer rooms that looked to me like something out of a Science Fiction movie. Both advisors reminded us that you don’t want to teach what was big a year ago, but what is cutting edge today, so that when the students graduate, they are familiar with the latest in automotive technology. Our small group was impressed with the education these young people are receiving. It makes one feel very honored to see how appreciative these students are now having a specific direction in their lives, soon to enter the automotive workforce prepared to advance and flourish. As a club of over 2,200, we should all step back from our busy lives and say “we made a difference” for these young people.
Special thank you to: Christos J. Chronis, Development Director & Advisor to Generous People Mesa Community College Steve Skroch, Automotive Service, Program Director at Mesa Community College Update: At their last meeting, AZPCA Board of Directors discussed the scholarship program and formed a committee to research the possibility of continued scholarships. They will report their recommendations back to the board. If you have an opinion or have an interest, contact Jim Bultema at: jabultema@aol.com or 928.607.1210 or Angela Manente at: amanente42@

HAS FORMULA 1 REALLY ARRIVED IN THE US? STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
T
he answer is a resounding YES, if stories in The Washington Post and PlanetF1 are to be believed. I know, I’m shaking my head, too. Pinch me. Am I dreaming? After all these years? Well, it’s hard to argue with the scene in Austin, a few weeks back, for the only F1 Circus visit to these United States this year. Here’s how The Post described it: “… an estimated 140,000 at Circuit of the Americas … contributing to a sellout crowd that reflected the growth of Formula One racing in a country that executives view as critical to the sport’s development.” The racing was great. But, to me, one of the highlights of the telecast, the Sky Sports feed on ABC/ESPN, was the return after two years of the “Gridwalk” – ex-F1 driver Martin Brundle’s trundle down the grid, microphone in hand, interviewing drivers, engineers, team principals, major domos of the sport … and Megan Thee Stallion. What? Well, he tried to interview Megan Thee Stallion, a Houston rapper, and she seemed willing to talk. But he was curtly cut off by several, shall we say, very large men who encircled her. And, oh by the way, the same thing happened when he tried to interview Serena Williams. I know, it has nothing to do with the racing. But it does make for great TV, especially for the American market. This is why I love the Brits. Brundle tweeted afterwards, “I have felt under pressure on the grid before but by people called Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Mansel, Piquet and so on. Bodyguards visiting the grid for the first time don’t bother me, everyone’s got a job to do, but they could maybe learn some manners and respect on our patch.” And, what do you know, according to PlanetF1, at the Mexican Grand Prix Brundle confirmed new protocols had been introduced after Austin. “Celebrities aren’t obliged to do interviews whilst on the grid, but security entourages are now no longer allowed to accompany them on there,” he said. All this has made Brundle, a long-retired F1 campaigner in his own right, more well-known, even in this country, than any of his exploits behind the wheel. This is “Page 6” stuff! On F1! How has this happened? According to The Post, a lot of the interest is being driven, so to speak, by the success of “Drive to Survive,” the multi-part Netflix documentary series that has chronicled the past three seasons of F1 in dynamic, sometimes melodramatic fashion. I’ve reviewed the past three seasons of “Drive” in this space. What has consistently struck me is that the series allows anyone to peek behind the proverbial kimono, to learn about just what makes the best “pilots” in the world actually tick … how they live, how they deal with the relentless pressure of team principals, teammates, the press, the fans and even, sometimes, lest we forget, the actual racing. And the teams. And the sponsors. And the competition. Especially the competition, especially this year. I can’t wait for the fourth iteration of the series, early next year, when they do justice, I hope, to the truly monumental season-long duel between Hamilton and Verstappen. It won’t be easy – Verstappen is literally the only driver who won’t participate in the docu-drama, despite the fact that his team, Red Bull,

has been very forthcoming each year. My understanding is that Max believes his words get taken out of context, for the benefit of the series. So he’d rather do one-on-one interviews with reporters who will do what they will do with his comments. Fine, Max. Have it your way. But why can’t I rid myself of this feeling of déjà vu? Could it be that I remember 20 years of the sold-out sojourns to Watkins Glen, once the home of F1 in the US? And the infield “bog” that, one year, engulfed a complete tour bus in flames? And sent F1 on a vagabond tour of street circuits in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Detroit and … I can’t remember, which is exactly the point. Remember, too, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Who remembers the name of the world’s current fastest human? The world record holder for the mile, either indoors or outdoors? The gold medalist in the last women’s Olympic figure skating competition? There was a time when these names would roll right off the tongue. Same for the events. One example; the Melrose Games at Madison Square Garden. And the featured Wanamaker Mile. At one time, this was huge, I tell you. Huge. And now? I have no idea whether the games even happen, much less get television coverage at all. No. With few exceptions, these sports have their day in the limelight every four years, if that. It’s a shame. The athletes do what they do at a level that compares directly against the heroes of F1. So, what does that mean for the future of Formula 1? Was Austin real? Or was it an aberration? Well, next year, Miami is also on the schedule. Although I believe the circuit is carved out of the on-ramps and parking lots that circle the stadium where the Dolphins play. But it should help. And then, at this writing, there’s the rumor that Porsche is considering fielding a team. Yes, Porsche. Yes, a team. And then there’s the rumor that Audi is trying to buy the McLaren team. Yes, Audi. Yes, McLaren. Let’s all hoora … wait just a minute. Haven’t we seen this picture before? In the early ‘60s in F1? In the early ‘80s in Indycar? Yes, yes, Porsche has been supremely successful in sports and prototype racing over the years. But open-wheel? Well, there’s the TAG engines of the ‘80s, and that’s about it. So, my conclusion is that the gnomes of Stuttgart and Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg are calculating that the success of Austin, a second race in the US, a race next year in China and the F1 Circus’ visit to every continent except Antarctica are too compelling a showcase to let go by. And will enable the elves to feature coming turbo-hybrid-electro-biofuelhydrogen techno know-how that will solidify the “sports car maker’s” claim to mobile superiority for many years to come. I guess F1 really has arrived on these shores. My question is whether it has found a home.
