PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello All: e just got through several weeks of record setting rain and flooding here in Arizona. It has subsided and appears to be dry for the next few weeks. Fortunately, we didn’t have any events that had to be cancelled because of the weather or flooded areas. Club activities tend to slow down in the summer months as members tend to participate less when the summer temperatures are upon us. We are running more events this summer than in the past to satisfy the pent up demand created during the COVID-19 abstinence. There is an uptick in COVID cases occurring here in Arizona and around the country. We are keeping our eye on the State and local municipality rules along with any directives from PCA National. We will keep you posted if there are any policy changes regarding masks, social distancing and vaccination requirements for our events. There will be two new policies forthcoming from the Board of Directors. The first will concern Driver Conduct on Driving Tours. Once finalized you will be required to read it, and acknowledge it when registering for any Driving Tour. The second is concerning the Photo section of the club website and posting photos from events. You will see the posting rules when the event organizer sends a link to attendees allowing uploading of photos taken. The Arizona Region is running the following upcoming events: · September 1 – Monthly Meeting – Members’ Appreciation Night (Free movie at Harkins) · September 11 – Porsches & Pancakes at the Schmooze Bar & Breakfast · September 18 – New Members’ Day – at the Culinary Dropout in Tempe · September 18 - Drive to South Mountain · September 25 – AutoX - AMP · October 1-4 – Hot Air Balloon Tour in Albuquerque, NM (Registration is Now Open) · October 6 – Monthly Meeting – Brat Haus in Scottsdale · October 9 – Drivers Ed. (at AMP) · October 16 – Porsches & Pancakes – Anthem · October 20 – Driving Tour (Weekday drive to Bagdad) · October 23 – AutoX – AMP · October 23 – Concours Prep and Judging School · October 30 – DE – AMP · November 3 – Monthly Meeting – Porsche North Scottsdale · November 6 – Flight 43 · November 13 – Drivers Ed (at AMP) · December 18 – Annual Holiday Party Drive Safely and we hope to see you at an event soon.

From the

EDITOR An gel a

Ma nent e

I

know I sound like a broken record, but if you want to participate in all the great events in the coming months you have to sign up! We even have the South Mountain Drive on September 19th, that has no limit on the number of participants. Also make sure to attend New Members’ Day on September 18th, whether you are considered a new member (last 24 months) or long time member, because it’s great to socialize with other Porsche enthusiasts and learn about your club. Besides the fact, that our club subsidizes the cost of this event! This month’s Going Places issue is voluminous. You might notice some changes to the format and look because I incorporated some of the suggestions made by the judges in the 2021 PCA National Newsletter contest (Going Places issues submitted for the contest were September 2020 and October 2020). Just in case you missed last month’s editorial, I won Third Place in Class V in the newsletter contest for our region! Here are just a few of the comments: • Clean and easy to read. • Banners at top of each section help with navigation. • No full-page hero photos. • The only editorial commentary is the President’s Letter and Editor Letter. Other officers contributed, but there was no editorial commentary in the rest of the newsletter. • Professional appearance in flip book format. A good variety of articles provided. • Don’t be afraid of using photos to fill the page. • Don’t be afraid to use fonts as a graphic. • Use some big bold colors to break up the pages. • Have the Membership Chair introduce the Meet a Member & include his/her picture. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write stories/articles and take pictures at our AZPCA events for Going Places, because without your participation there would be no monthly newsletter/magazine. There are 6 feature stories this month, which has made it difficult for me to select the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Chas Wirken for contributing “Return to Pikes Peak.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Check out his story on page 28 and YouTube link. https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=VR8Q6E8MqEU Looking forward to seeing you in person at one of our upcoming events. I will be at Members Appreciation Night, New Members’ Day and drive to South Mountain.

MT. LEMMON DRIVE IF YOU DIDN’T GO, YOU MISSED A GOOD TIME! STORY AND PHOTOS BY RON COLE

16

O

n Sunday, August 8th the Mt. Lemmon run started with an 8 a.m. driver meeting at the Cracker Barrel in Chandler. Pulling into the parking lot was a fun experience as Porsches of all types (24 of them with 45 drivers and navigators) were parked everywhere.

At 8 a.m. sharp, Rook laid out the rules including topics such as excessive speed (not allowed and such behavior invalidates our insurance coverage). Rook asked for new members and first event members to introduce themselves, which resulted in around 5 introductions. Upon check-in a few minutes earlier, each driver was assigned to group 1 or group 2 to depart 15 minutes apart, both with a lead and sweep car. By 8:30 a.m., we were off and running. The first stop was at Picacho Peak for a quick break. The 15 minute separation of the groups worked perfectly as group 1 departed just as group 2 arrived. After a back roads drive through and around Tucson, we met up with the Mt. Lemmon Highway and started our climb to Summerhaven and the cool pine scented weather at 8,000 feet elevation. My 1999 911-996 zipped around the twisty road in 3rd gear with an occasional downshift to 2nd to keep the RPMs above 2500. A lunch mate mentioned that his late model turbo 911 with PDK did not seem to notice the 8,000 foot climb. Under the category of “best laid plans” our lunch spot, which had said they should have no problem handling our group, had a full parking lot and 2 handicapped spots, which a few of our members quickly filled and maybe one other spot, also quickly claimed. The rest of us headed a little further up the road and ended up at the base of the ski lift, which had plenty of parking and a restaurant with a 1 hour wait. That is not a problem when the ski lift shop is selling potato chips and delicious fudge appetizers. After a tasty lunch, including some decadent pie with ice cream, our back up restaurant group dispersed with some of us heading back to the Valley and others taking the lift to the top of the mountain. The members staying overnight came down the mountain and headed to the Westward Look Resort in Tucson. A good source reported that there was a late afternoon gathering at the bar followed by dinner. Many thanks to Rook Younger for organizing this fun trip to Mt. Lemmon. The cool weather and the camaraderie of fellow Porsche enthusiasts made for an enjoyable few days.

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS Weekday Drive to Bagdad Wednesday, October 20, 2021 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

An idea we have not tried before… a weekday driving tour. AZPCA’s first! October schedule is packed with events: track days, a multi-day tour to New Mexico, a special breakfast, Concours prep and judging school… not to mention national and zone events. But if you’re looking for something different, getting your Porsche out on a weekday could be an option. Bring your Porsche out for a drive on some of the best stretches of scenic and fun roads in the state — Yarnell Hill, Peeples Valley, Kirkland Junction toward Bagdad, then up-and-back on the twisty roller-coaster AZ-97. A driver’s drive for sure! At the end of the fun drive we’ll gather at the Copper Country Bar & Grill for lunch.

Menu choices at the Copper Country will include a Grilled Chicken Ranch sandwich with bacon and pepper jack cheese; Arizona Burger with grilled onions and green chilies; or Southwest Chicken Salad with cheddar cheese, salsa, black beans, corn, and tortilla strips. Cost of $20 per person includes tax, tip, non-alcoholic drinks, payable when you register on MotorsportReg. So take a day off from the office, skip school, whatever; this will be a fun day! REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS AZPCA “Hot Air Tour” to New Mexico Friday - Monday, October 1 - 4, 2021 Join us for the third “Hot Air Tour” to New Mexico. We will be leaving Phoenix for Socorro, NM on Friday, October 1, taking a scenic route through eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico to Socorro. On the way there will visit the Very Large Array of radio telescopes for a tour (http://www.vla.nrao.edu/), if their restrictions allow. We will be staying at the Socorro Best Western Hotel. Friday evening, we will have dinner at a restaurant near the hotel followed by a presentation on the Atomic Bomb and the effects of radiation presented by Steve Sapareto (our first “hot air” event). Saturday morning, we will drive into White Sands Missile Range to the Trinity Bomb site and museum where the first atomic bomb was detonated. It is only open to the public two days per year (don’t worry, radiation levels are very low). We will leave the site about noon time for lunch and a scenic drive to Albuquerque arriving in time to visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (https://www. nuclearmuseum.org/) for a guided tour before checking into our hotel at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North. Dinner will be on your own at one of the nearby restaurants. Getting up very early Sunday we will watch the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Mass Ascension, one of the largest balloon launches in the world from a good vantage point (possibly the Albuquerque Porsche dealership). More than 700 balloons from all over the world launch from a 78-acre launch field (54 football fields) at the 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park. Those interested can also join us to meet the Lambda Car Club for the Fiesta of Wheels, a car display right on the balloon launch grounds, displaying our cars along with over 200 others. This will provide free admission to the balloon grounds. The rest of the day will be available for sightseeing followed by an evening dinner and viewing of the Balloon Glow and Fireworks at the International Balloon Museum Foundation (https://balloonmuseum. com/ ). We will return home on Monday as a group or individually. Those interested in arranging balloon rides should contact Rainbow Ryders the official Fiesta Balloon ride concession. Find contact information at www.balloonfiesta.com under guest information. Other special event offerings are also listed. The registration fee (expected to be about $130.) will cover the VLA tour, Friday night dinner and presentation, the National Museum of Nuclear Science tour, and International Balloon Museum banquet and tour. All other meals and lodging will be at your expense. Check our AZPCA website to sign-up. We only have a limited number of rooms available at each location so please make your reservations as soon as possible to get our group rate and to ensure a room as hotel lodging during the Balloon Fiesta will be extremely difficult to find. Make Reservations for Friday night, October 1st at the Socorro Hotel & Suites, 1100 N. California, Socorro, NM 87801, Phone: (575) 838-0556 ($119.99/night). Mention the Porsche Club to get our rate. MONGOLLON RIM DRIVE TO MORMON LAKE IN SEARCH FOR COOLER WEATHER. STORY BY BOB WOODWELL PHOTOS BY CHERYL WOODWELL Q: What do you get when driving tours have been restricted to driving only (no meals!) for over a year? A: Thirty-nine hungry Porsche owners who were excited to drive through the cool pines to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon Brewery.

T

hat is what happened July 17th on the Mogollon Rim Drive to Mormon Lake and Flagstaff. Another well-planned driving tour was organized and executed by the team of Rook and Debbie Younger. Thirty-nine Boxsters, Caymans, 911s, a Cayenne e-Hybrid, a Panamera and a Taycan drove through spotty showers to Flagstaff. The route took us up State Route 87 (the Beeline Highway), past the burn area from last year’s HUMAN CAUSED (please be careful!) Bush Fire, through Payson, into the cool pines to Mormon Lake on State Route 3, past Upper and Lower Lake Mary and into Flagstaff. The 39 cars were separated into three groups safely lead by Rook and Debbie Younger, Bob Woodwell and Mike and Ruth McBride with Larry Grimes and Chuck and Denise Brasille (driving their new Cayenne e-Hybrid) acting as sweeps. If you have not made this drive before you should. You will experience beautiful scenery, cool temperatures (my car thermometer registered 71 degrees at one point) and little traffic. Plus, it ends near a whole host of nice restaurants. As is usual for Rook planned trips, driving directions were well prepared and accurate. Well, accurate as long as you passed the embedded test where everyone had to decipher that Milepost 273 was in fact Milepost 293. Everyone passed except for the driver and navigator of the Cayenne e-Hybrid, who were understandably more excited about driving their new vehicle than deciphering the directions test. But all’s well that ends well!

But all’s well that ends well! The Grand Canyon Brewery was a fitting end to the trip. Attending club members had a selection of five lunch plates which included soup, sandwich with fries or soup and a large salad. I heard no complaints about the food, the beer or the restaurant other than service was a little slow as we overwhelmed the restaurant. The friendly restaurant staff worked hard and did the best they could getting the food from the kitchen to the hungry drivers and passengers quickly. Fortunately, the official trip ended when we arrived at the brewery (as clearly stated by Rook before we left) so everyone could enjoy the beer of which there were twelve to choose from. I especially enjoyed the Sunset Amber Ale and brought a six-pack home with me. So, all and all a great trip and a great route. Thanks to Rook, Debbie, the three group leaders, the sweeps and most of all to the club members who like to drive, eat and socialize.

HE MOUNTAINS BECKONS. Although I checked the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb off my racing bucket list last year, I returned in 2021. Why? Because there’s nothing else like the 156 turns over 12.42 miles of a two-lane road climbing from 9,390 to 14,115 feet through lush green forest to barren granite summit. And I was determined to improve my time in the 99th running of the second oldest race in the United States. (Spoiler alert: Mother Nature foiled me). On January 28, I was officially accepted to run in the 2021 “Race to the Clouds.” Once again, I had the honor of being part of the Porsche Motorsports Yokohama Tire team. Five drivers of Cayman GT4 Clubsports were invited; four piloting the newer 781s with 40 more horsepower than my 2016 981. Because I knew I could not win the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama division, my race would be against myself and the mountain. Overall, thirteen Porsches were invited to the race. Their drivers included such notables as all-time record holder Romain Dumas and Raphaël Astier, both of France, and David Donahue. The GT4 Clubsport class had its own professional – veteran rally car racer, stunt driver, and television host, Tanner Foust. The three days of practice before race week were spent getting reacquainted with the course, roughly one-third of it each day, divided into the lower, middle and upper sections. Practice runs began at about 5:30 a.m. and continued until 8:30 a.m. Cars launched at approximately two-minute intervals. After all cars reached the top of their assigned section, they returned downhill in a conga line, turned around, and ran up again. It’s like the thrill of being a kid on a playground slide – climb the ladder, slide down, and repeat – but the thrill is going up instead of down.

Once again, eight-time class champion and Pikes Peak Hall of Fame member Jeff Zwart served as coach for the Cayman GT4 drivers. You know Jeff, at least, from his artistic photography on the last page of every issue of Panorama magazine. He is also a director and cinematographer of everything automotive from car commercials to movies (e.g., The Art of Racing in the Rain). There is no better coach. Jeff is not only knowledgeable, he is affable and generous with his expertise, determined to see that each of his drivers do their best. Every day after our individual in-car practice sessions Jeff would drive us up and down the mountain in a Cayenne while describing the racing line and narrating from the depth of his years of experience. RACE WEEK, started on Monday with a rigorous tech inspection of cars and driver safety equipment, followed by three more days of practice, one of which was also qualifying day on the lower section. Qualifying times determine the running orders on race day, not whether the driver will compete on race day. My race week practice began on Tuesday on the upper section, which is perhaps my favorite section with its fast sweeping turns and broad vistas. Wednesday was my qualifying day on the lower section. My first run was a less than full speed reconnaissance trip in dawn’s early light. My second run at sunrise was going to be faster than ever, but it proved to be too fast. I approached Engineer’s Corner at 90 MPH intending to go through it faster than before. I lifted, braked, and then realized I had miscalculated. This corner has claimed many a victim, rookies and veterans alike, even Jeff Zwart. He has said the corner is named Engineer’s Corner because it takes an engineer to figure it out. Well, I’m no engineer. Fortunately, there is no cliff at that corner. Instead, I went off the pavement, over the dirt shoulder, and “parked” the car in the edge of the trees. Although I didn’t hit a tree, the “off” damaged the spoiler, front bumper cover, and right radiator.

ENTER THE HEROES OF PORSCHE OF COLORADO SPRINGS. As soon as my car was flat-bedded to the pits, Porsche technician Jason Schmitt inspected the car and pronounced it repairable. At the dealership, Matt Strand put my car on the alignment rack and proved it was not only straight and square, but the alignment specs were still spot on. Parts were quickly ordered by Andrew Olsen for overnight delivery while Kelly Rohrer and I prepped the car. By end of day Friday, a new and freshly painted bumper cover was in place, behind which was a new radiator, and the cooling system was bled, pressure tested, and refilled. Although my qualifying session was cut short and I missed Thursday’s practice on the middle mountain, I would get to race on Sunday. though my qualifying session was cut short and I missed Thursday’s practice on the middle mountain, I would get to race on Sunday.

In introducing me, Brenner asked me to raise my hands. I had no idea why. He then introduced the crowd to my crew, Lefty Loosey and Righty Tighty! Like last year, I was the only driver on the mountain going solo, without any support crew. Zwart said he wasn’t sure whether to refer to me as “The Team of One” or “The Team of None.” But I must give thanks to Erik Skirmants, Mitch McKee and Scott Krugman of PMNA, and to the many folks from Yokohama Tire, all of whom assisted the entire team.

Unlike 2020, spectators were back this year. Accordingly, Porsche of Colorado Springs hosted a great event for drivers and hundreds of fans on Wednesday evening. A highlight was the Driver’s Chat with all of the Porsche drivers seated before the crowd, introduced by General Manager Joe Brenner and engaged in a pleasant conversation moderated by Jeff Zwart.

Fans of this event are especially dedicated as they must find their viewing spots between 2 and 5 a.m. on race day. Three fans, a black bear sow and her two cubs, found their place in a tree overlooking the pits during the night and stayed there all day.

Human fans lined the road and occupied various hillside vantage points, much like you’ve seen in so many road rally race photos. As competitors moved into the pits near the start line on Saturday afternoon, rain began to fall. Rain at the 9,000 foot elevation takes a different physical form at 14,000 feet, as was confirmed on race morning. The green flag was scheduled to drop for the first car at 7:30 a.m., but the start was delayed while efforts to clear ice on the road to the summit continued. Unfortunately, the sun could not penetrate the overcast to melt the ice. Therefore, the race had to be shortened to end just below Devils Playground, about three miles from the summit. Given my aborted qualifying effort, I was the first of the GT4s to take the green flag, following the Tesla Model S Plaid of Randy Pobst in the Exhibition Division. In contrast to Randy’s silent start, my car gave the fans a proper auditory experience. When the green flag is waved, a driver does not have to leave the start line immediately because the timing line is about 100 yards up the road. So, at the wave of the flag, I pressed the brake pedal hard with my left foot and floored the throttle with my right, thus putting the car in launch mode. When the RPMs stabilized at about 6,500, I released the brake. The sidewalls of the Yokohama Advan A052s wrinkled as they applied their grip to the asphalt of America’s Highway. I felt the rear of the car wiggle its hips as it “thundered” up the mountain, as commentator John Hindhaugh described my start during the Mobil 1 sponsored broadcast. I especially liked the remarks of his co-commentator Bruce Jones: “Super impressed though by Chas Wirken taking off from the line. It looked like a Porsche because it was. It sounded like a Porsche because it was. But what I love is that Chas is a 69-year old attorney who didn’t start racing until he was 50 years old. So you don’t have to be a child kart racer to get to the top of this mountain.” With the start behind me, I was off into unknown weather and road conditions. Near the end of the series of hairpins known as the Ws because on a map they look like that letter, I entered the treacherous “Evo Corner” and what seemed like a cloud laying on the road. Whoa, that’ll cause a driver to lift! Indeed I did before cautiously feeling my way forward. At the finish line, my first thought was a conscious sigh of relief that I finished intact. My second thought was the race was over too soon. I wanted to turn around, go down, and do it again. Beyond the finish line, the cars parked alongside the road and the drivers shared camaraderie as they waited for and greet each successive car and driver. Although we didn’t reach the summit where a hot meal and a fresh donut were to be ours, we had a roadside picnic of cold sandwiches. I was honored that Romain Dumas, Raphaël Astier, and Tanner Foust chose my car as their picnic bench.

32

After the last of 51 cars passed the finish line, all returned down the mountain in a procession known as the “Parade of Champions.” The fans crowded the road forming a friendly gauntlet, cheering and high-fiving the drivers. While I was not a champion, I felt like a conquering hero returning home and enjoyed every moment. At the end of the day, Porsches won three of the six race divisions. Romain Dumas won the Time Attack division and was second fastest overall in a 911 GT2 RS Clubsport. Raphaël Astier took the Pikes Peak Open division win a 911 GT3 Cup race car. And Tanner Foust won the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama division in a 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Looking ahead to next year’s 100th running of this iconic race, post-race comments indicate I might be invited to return. I’m already looking forward to it. BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

PORSCHE 911SC Experiences & illustrated practical advice from one man’s home restoration

E

laborate subtitles seem to be becoming a fact of life these days, and indeed they can provide clarification for otherwise ambiguous or duplicate titles. In the case of this book, the subtitle only hints at how personal, detailed and well illustrated is the write-up presented. Virtually a photo-illustrated diary of a very ambitious and complete restoration of a basically presentable SC, it can be an invaluable resource for anyone working on any air cooled 911, SCs in particular. Divided into 17 chapters, every ‘system’ of a car is covered individually, starting with Preparing for engine removal, passing through Gearbox rebuild and the CIS system, to end with Suspension refresh and a word on brakes, coverage is complete and thoroughly detailed. Hopefully, the 5 chapters relating to rust repair (the subject is a British car after all) will have little relevance to California and Arizona readers. It is also noted that while interior sound proofing and new carpeting are dealt with in detail, there is no mention of any work on the dash pad though apparently the windshield was removed and the seal replaced.. Written in first person it gives a very readable, you-arethere feeling, a feeling greatly enhanced by the many close-up photos. One unusual feature of this book is that in addition to describing what he does, and including pictures of the parts on which he is working, the author refers to parts by Page number in the Porsche Parts manual, by item number on that page, and by the Porsche part number itself. Truly a treasure trove of factory parts book diagrams for the SC. Also provided is a system by system tabulation of parts, by Porsche number, and listings of tools and wrench sizes used. The tables are meticulously detailed down to individual nuts, washers and screws. These tables, page after page of them, are so complete and comprehensive that it is a wonder he had any time to actually get any of the work done!

The illustrations in PORSCHE 911SC are refreshing and realistic compared to shop manuals; they show dirt and rust and parts displays laid out on grass. Chapter number and name in the upper corner of the right hand pages provides context to the discussion. A British book, some of the terminology is ‘strange’ and the type font is noticeably different from that used in most books published in the USA. Also unique to this book is the fact that the detailed captions for the photo illustrations, arguably the meat of the book, are in larger type than that of the basic text. Roughly 1/3 of the book is devoted to body and upholstery repair/ renovation. A full chapter is devoted to rebuilding the non-collapsible Targa roof. Fifteen very well illustrated pages are devoted to Pedal cluster rebuild including replacement of seven bushes. This chapter is one of many that, basically, is not SC specific but generally applicable to all air-cooled 911s.

PORSCHE 911SC Experiences & illustrated practical advice from one man’s home restoration by Andrew Clusker, published March, 2021 by Veloce Publishing, UK is hardbound with a photographic cover, and contains 280, 10 x 10 inch heavyweight pages, copiously illustrated. Befitting the meticulous data tables, there is a very comprehensive index. Because of its size and the interesting illustrations it will make a great coffee-table book. Because of it’s intimate detail, anyone interested in the construction, or maintenance/repair of an air cooled Porsche 911 should have a copy of this book. By the time you read this it should be available from your favorite bookseller for ~$60.00 (ask for it), or from Amazon books. ,

LIGHT FROM DARKNESS? NO LIGHTS, NO SOUND, NOTHING ! STORY AND PHOTO BY STEVE MARTIN

38

I explained my predicament, and the need for special handling, and she said she understood, and the tow service would call me. After about 20 minutes, I got a call from some nameless outfit, like Joe’s towing service, (or maybe Jose’s). Kids were yelling in the background. I explained what I needed, and he said he was sorry, but he only had a tilt bed truck. Back to 1-800-PORSCHE, another very pleasant lady, different tow company but same result. Again on a third try. After that I gave up and started calling all the local towing companies myself. Eventually I got one that understood about dollies, and said he’d be out to get me, bringing a set. This was Valley Express Towing of Mesa. After a short time this brand new, shiny tow truck showed up and the driver proceeded expertly to get the Porsche on the dollies ready for towing. I told him I was glad to meet someone who knew what they were doing. He said he had towed that way for many Porsches, Audis, BMWs and Teslas (lots of those). He also regaled me with an interesting tale of how he’d towed a Bugatti Veyron from Tucson to Scottsdale. It being Sunday evening we decided that towing the car directly to the dealer would not be a good idea, since the service departmentt was closed, and the car would have to sit out on the forecourt overnight, unattended. So the plan was to tow the car the four miles to my house, leave it there, and come back to tow to the dealer Monday morning While offloading the car in my driveway we saw that the electrics had somehow come alive by themselves, everything seemed to be working, and the car was probably now drivable. Decision time. I said that no way was I going to drive the car to the dealer in case it died again while on the 202 freeway. So next morning, as arranged, the driver returned and we made the tow to Porsche Chandler. On arrival, everything electrical was apparently still working, and I left it with them.

About 7 months ago, I was brought to a stop by a complete electrical power loss on my 2015 Carrera, near my house in Chandler. No lights, no sound, nothing. Luckily I was on a local road that wasn’t too busy. After trying various things I accepted that I would need a tow. Now, when the car stopped, I unthinkingly shifted the transmission from Drive to Park (as you do). Then I discovered that without electrical power you can move the lever into Park, but not out again. So, with the rear wheels locked, I realized that it would probably not be possible to get the car on to a tilting bed tow truck (now perhaps the most usual type) without damaging something. I would need to have the car towed using a set of dollies, front and rear. (I know, you experts are saying “of course, how else?” I’m not an expert though). So, perhaps reasonably, I called 1-800-PORSCHE to get help. I got a very nice lady;

Next day, they called back to say that they had checked out absolutely everything possible and nothing showed up. The battery was only 4 months old, so it wasn’t that. Recovering the history from the OBD it had shown only that there had indeed been a complete electrical failure, but it had now reset itself. Well…..Yes? After a discussion with the service folks the only thing we thought might have caused it was a “glitch” (a technical term) in one of the myriad microprocessors all over the vehicle. So I came and very gingerly drove it home keeping carefully to the slow lane of the freeway. Since then, I have had no problems, and I’ve been driving it with gradually increasing confidence (perhaps unjustified, but anyway). I’m appealing to the experts: any knowledge of anyone else ever having this problem? All contributions gratefully received. So, if you need a tow, based on my one contact, Valley Express Towing may be the people to go to. For recovery services from 1-800-PORSCHE, my experience would indicate that they are utterly useless.
