17th to 22nd July To celebrate the arrival of the torch, events will be held at Grosvenor Gardens, Warrior Square and the (all ticket) evening event at the Stade. For those not lucky enough to have tickets for the Stade event, a giant screen will be relaying the action live at Pelham Place car park. Once the torch has departed for Dover via Rye the fun continues with a number of Olympic-themed events, culminating in Pirate Day on the 22nd followed by the Red Arrows roaring into town. On the 22nd July, thousands of Buccaneers, Cut-throats, Scurvy Sea-Dogs, Corsairs and other assorted nautical Brigands will be descending upon Hastings to take back the Guinness world record for “Largest Gathering of Pirates”. On the day there will be live music, stunt action sword fighting displays, cannons, muskets, hog roasts, a pirate market, jugglers, massed pirate drums, a pirate wedding and much more! In order to take part, you must wear : A Pirate Hat or Bandana, Pirate style trousers or skirt, shirt and a “Pirate Accessory” (An eye patch, hook, sword, pistol, flag or Parrot) At 1pm the assembled pirates will gather on the beach and (hopefully) the world record will be broken! The event will have a truly spectacular finale when the Red Arrows fly in to turn the sky red!

Why music and sensory experiences are great for babies and toddlers. Babies and young children just love music and exploring new things and often it is through music that they communicate for the first time, whether it’s through gesture, smiling or action. During the first 2 years of a baby’s life they learn using their sensory motor skills which is why a local community interest company in Bexhill-on-Sea called Calm Farm have developed a wonderful group which assists in this process. They create different lighting displays with exciting hand held objects that light up, musical experiences throughout with a wide variety of beautiful instruments. There are mixed music and movement activities to support physical development with the use of tactile objects, colourful props and so much more. These groups are designed to promote all areas of a child’s development which is in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage. The Calm Farm team is so committed to enhancing and supporting child development that they are always developing new, exciting and unique activities and designing props to do just that. Debbie Cheeseman is the group leader for the sensory group and is a qualified nursery nurse. She has over ten years of experience of working with early year’s children and their families. Her caring and easy going nature means she is well liked by all the children and families who attend Calm Farm music and sensory groups. ‘Faye enjoys singing and dancing and loves the sensory session especially the stars. I feel Faye’s sharing skills have improved greatly since attending Calm Farm, as she has to wait for her turn when rolling the ball! I think the mirror game is Faye’s favourite closely followed by the tickle game. When we turn out the lights, listen to the lovely music and play with the flashing toys I feel a sense of calm and closeness to Faye. Long gone is the old image of expectant dads wearily trudging the well worn corridors of the maternity wards; waiting for a head to pop round from behind the closed door, with the long awaited news. Perceptions of a father’s role have changed, and men are more involved in the pregnancy, birth, and upbringing of a child. From the moment you hear those two precious words, ‘I’m pregnant’, life changes. It is hard to appreciate just how much life changes until you actually become a dad, and as the saying goes ‘proper preparation prevents poor performance’. It can be physically challenging for the new dad to support a woman though pregnancy and child birth, to care for a new baby, and to raise a toddler. Being unprepared may ultimately culminate in back ache or pain, and a visit to the osteopath. Following these top ten tips for proper preparation may help you avoid some of the common complaints that could lead you, your partner or baby needing a visit to the osteopath. Buying equipment - When shopping for changing tables and push chairs, make sure that they are the right height so you don’t have to bend when using them. Look out for push chairs with adjustable handle height. Some handles are angled so your wrists are in a neutral position, putting less strain on your wrists. Pushing a fully laden push chair can be physically demanding, so test drive them before buying. When buying a sling, make sure it is comfortable, try before you buy, or ask a friend if you can try out theirs. If you have a bad back, neck or shoulders, avoid slings that only sit over one shoulder. A back pack or front soft sling will spread the weight more evenly.

Looking after mum - Back ache and pain, and painful conditions such as pubic symphasis dysfunction can be debilitating during pregnancy, and can spoil what should be a precious time. A simple foot massage or back massage can really ease an aching body. Be prepared to offer a massage, using long, deep, slow strokes to iron away aches and pains. If you don’t think you’re up to the job, there are lots of qualified pregnancy massage practitioners who are. If the symptoms persist visit the GP, midwife or an osteopath. Similarly, a massage during labour can be wonderful. Again, use long, deep, slow strokes from the base of the spine, up the back, to the shoulders. If the baby is born by caesarean section, or if mum has had lots of stitches, be prepared to do more housework, shopping etc., especially if there’s an older sibling, as mum won’t be able to. If mum is breastfeeding, give her lots of encouragement, make sure she has pillow for comfort and support, and plenty of water to drink. Looking after yourself - You’re more likely to hurt or strain your back when you’re tired. Take your time to do things carefully, and don’t cut corners. It may be quicker to lift the baby straight out of the cot, but constant bending will eventually lead to strain. Always remember to lower the side of the cot so you don’t have to bend as far. Tips for baby - Make sure baby has plenty of tummy time and isn’t always lying on their back. The bones in a new-borns head are still quite soft and malleable, and can flatten if subjected to constant pressure. Tummy time could be lying on a play mat, lying face down across your lap, or being carried over your shoulder. If you notice your baby only turns its head to one side or only likes to feed from one side, seek advice as it may be caused by a tight muscle in their neck (torticollis). This can be assessed and treated by an osteopath or physiotherapist. It is important to get the right type of push chair for the age of your baby. New babies need back support and to lay flat on a firm base. They should not be sitting in a push chair until they are 6 months old. Babies must not spend too much time in a car seat, approximately 90 minutes a day maximum. Childcare Rising stars is a charity commitee led pre school that has been in the community of Seaside Eastbourne since 1972 and has always enjoyed a very good reputation. On 9th May 2010 we heard the devastating news that the church hall was on fire at 12:30 am, a suspected arson attack on a church building. By the early hours we knew we had lost everything, all of our toys, garden equipment, our statutory paperwork and worst of all, our happy memories of the children, parents and staff members old and new. In response to the devastation, the staff, parents and local community were amazing, rallying together to help us keep the pre-school open. There were many small fund-raising events and toy donations which helped us get back on our feet again. Within a month we managed to reopen temporary premises at Christ church hall about half a mile up the road, to whom we are very thankful. We open 37 weeks a year, term time only, 5 days a week and offer various sessions to suit working and non working parents/carers which ensures that we are offering opportunities to all children in the local community to come and join our lively, fun, and reputable pre-school. We rely heavily on parental support to remain open, with fundraising events regularly over the year to buy new equipment for the children. We work closely with all the primary and junior schools in the area and teachers always comment on how well prepared the rising stars children are, ready for transition to their first year at school. BATTLE ZONE On a windy day back in June, I was invited along to try out the “Battle Zone” at Clambers Play Centre in Hastings. Battle Zone is an outdoor combat game played with guns that fire infrared beams, it’s like playing paintball but without getting hit by painful pellets. I joined in with an open game which pits you against whoever has turned up on the day. The group we played with was very mixed, a fairly even split between boys and girls, with the kids ranging in age from 8 to early teens plus a couple of dads joining in with the fun. The first thing I noticed about the Battle Zone was the huge amount of effort that’s been put into making the play area authentic and interesting. There are bridges, tunnels, bunkers, command posts and even an old Land Rover to hide in! We were split into two teams and given some very impressive, metal guns, the kind used by the British Army during training exercises. The guns are attached to a headband with three small red receptors which enemy soldiers will have to target to take you out of the game. Players are briefed on how to use the equipment, what happens when you get shot, how to “re-spawn” back into the game if you’re killed, tips on how to survive and some safety rules. The most important rule being “no running”. Banning running makes the game much safer as there’s far less chance of falling over or getting hurt colliding with someone charging the other way, failure to comply with this rule means a game marshal will “Penalty kill” you and put you out of the game! The enthusiasm and professionalism shown by the staff

really plays a huge part in the whole experience. The fact that everyone working there seems to love what they do adds to the atmosphere, the adrenaline starts kicking in before you’ve even fired a shot. During your 1 or 2 hour session, you and your team are given a variety of different missions to complete, and during the missions the marshals shout advice, hints and warnings to help the games flow.

Each mission had a specific goal, getting an object to a certain point in enemy territory, retrieving “data” from the enemy camp or protecting a certain member of the team from enemy fire. The missions gave the game a real competitive edge, much more fun than just aimlessly shooting each other. As there are no paintballs whizzing about, parents not joining in can take photos of their kids playing and watch the fun close up too.

Sneaking through the bushes, ducking from enemy fire, trying to outflank the other team, it’s hard to see how anyone could fail to have fun here. The hour session I played (Won two missions, lost two missions...) seemed to go by in about 5 minutes and at the end, everyone had a smile on their face and no one wanted the game to end. All in all this was a fantastic little adventure that guarantees active, energetic fun for all ages from 6 upwards. Mums & dads shouldn’t sit on the sidelines either, everyone can have fun here. Summer Gymnastic Camps Summerfields Gymnastics Club has been established in Hastings for over 30 years. We have over 200 members, with classes from Babygym, Parent & Toddler, Pre-School, General Gymnastics and Elites. The gym has recently undergone a refit and now boasts a new 22 metre tumble track in addition to a sprung floor and all the equipment required to help our gymnasts achieve in their sport. Not just a sport, it’s a way of life! Hastings Kickboxing Academy (HKA) is the longest established and most qualified kick boxing academy in Hastings, training at the fully equipped, 5,000sq. ft. gym at William Parker Sports College. With over 20 years experience Carl Denne successfully runs Hastings Kickboxing Academy, helping members gain confidence, develop their fitness and achieve success in grading and competitions. We spoke to Carl recently about his work helping local young people deal with bullying: At HKA it is my personal aim to help crack down on bullying, and in particular working with youngsters and teens. It can be very difficult to stop the bullies from doing what they do, as it normally stems from their home life and own insecurities. So, at HKA, we work from a different angle, not to just try and fight, but to build your self confidence and help you learn new skills both mentally and physically. This can be enough to give you the upper hand on the people who like to throw their weight around. Being heavily bullied myself all the way through school I found my younger years very hard to deal with, and, as there was not much support from the school, I had to learn the hard way which meant, to be truthful, talking my way out of most scenarios. Although I understand it’s not always possible in all situations, the best and hardest thing to do is simply to walk away. This should always be your first and favoured option. We will also teach you at HKA is that you can and should

be able to stand up for yourself whenever you need to. This is your right and not their’s to take away. As a rule, if you’re being pushed around physically then just by standing strong with confidence it is normally enough to make a bully think twice as they prey on the weak. As for psychological bullying, this can often be worse and I believe it can be harder to deal with. The first step is to be strong within yourself and become a mentally stronger person than them. Training at HKA is aimed at making it as enjoyable as possible for everyone who comes along, whatever level you are at. By training with us you will help feed your self confidence, becoming stronger and fitter both mentally and physically. You’ll learn new skills and meet some great people who could be there for the same reasons as you. It is important to remember you’re not alone, tell your friends and be STRONG. HKA is always here for you and there is a great family culture between members, we don’t let bullies train at the gym and if we hear of it going on it is dealt with as soon as possible. This year alone we have worked with a group of SEN children at The St Leonards Academy, run full day classes at the Hastings Academy also Rye College and William Parker Sports College. Here's her opinion of each of the three books : "Mrs MacCready was ever so greedy" was enjoyable to read and also had really fun and colourful pictures in it too. I liked looking at the drawings on each of the pages. When I read the descriptions of all the food she ate it made my mouth water. I thought the "Dog Detectives" book was also very enjoyable and I will probably want to read it lots of times. My favourite of the three books was "The Fearsome Beastie". I liked the humour in the story, but it is also quite exciting too. My favourite character in the book was the Gran. I can imagine that small children might find it a bit scary but in a fun way. My sister who is 5 took "The Fearsome Beastie" into school and her teacher read it to the class. All of the year one children enjoyed it and thought it was a very good book.

There’s the adventure of a lifetime coming to libraries this summer – it’s called Story Lab! Children aged from 4 to 11 can join in the fun with Will, Rani, Evie, Lex and Aesop the cat as they set off in search of missing items from the Story Lab. The challenge is to read any six of the great books in the library. There’s a Story Lab model and stickers to keep track of the fun and a fantastic medal for those who finish. I am dreading this. She attends a small primary school and most of her friends are going to another school. The ones who are going to her secondary school are not her close friends. I am really worried that she will struggle with the move and that she wont want to go. Transition to secondary school can be very difficult for some children however there are lots of ways you can support your daughter. The first thing is that she will pick up on your anxieties so the main job for you is for you to keep calm and positive. Talk to her about what she is thinking and feeling and listen to her answers as she may not be as anxious as you expect. If she has any questions or worries try to help her think about how she can answer them or solve them herself. As a parent it is sometimes difficult to listen and not solve the problems ourselves however it is really important to get young people to do this for themselves. It reinforces the ‘they can do it’ thinking and helps them feel positive about themselves for the future. Find out from her school when the taster days are – most secondary schools have a well rehearsed transition programme for children. This often includes children visiting their new school and staff visiting them and answering their questions. The majority of primary schools also support transitions with work and question and answer sessions which will start in her final term. Remember that transition isn’t just the period before the move but the period after as well and this is where you can really help. This can mean making sure you are at home when she gets there on the first few days, ensure she has the space and time to do homework without any added stresses of family life, setting up systems to ensure that she has all the books she needs for each day and that she has a routine for checking – this could be her timetable on the fridge and packing her school bag the night before. If she has any fears just listen and support her in solving them. ‘What could you do?’ ‘How could we help you solve this?’ are both good phrases to practice and use. other children back to tea may be over however helping her to go out and do things in a different way are now exciting options. You might have a couple of friends back after school and then take them to the cinema, or help her to arrange meeting with people at the local shopping centre on a Saturday. You can have a coffee or do your own shopping and then bring her home. Dear Alison My son is in Year 8 and has just been diagnosed as dyslexic. I have no idea what this means or what support he needs from us at home or from school. What should I do? Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects reading, writing and learning in different ways for different children. About 10% of the population have this disability with 4% described as severe. People with dyslexia think and learn differently from other non dyslexics and they often feel as if their mind is ‘wired differently’. Dyslexic people find it particularly difficult to learn to read, write and/or spell, even though their abilities in other areas are often average or above. They are often very creative and tend to have an interesting profile of things they are good at and those they find difficult. There is no cure for dyslexia but with the right teaching and support, dyslexics can overcome the difficulties classroom learning causes, and achieve great things. Have a look at the British Dyslexia website: www.bdadyslexia.org.uk This is a really good web site and explains all about dyslexia and how you as a parent can support your child at home. It also explains what and how your son can be helped at school. The school must have noticed that your son was having difficulties and therefore by doing the test wanted to support him. In school children with Special Educational Needs are supported by the Special Needs Coordinator – SENCO. You would find it very useful to talk to them as they will explain how they will be supporting your son and how his difficulties are impacting on his learning in the classroom. This will also help you in understanding what help to give at home. Dear Alison My son is in Year 7 and for the past year he has been bullied by some older

children in school. I have spoken to his form tutor on numerous occasions and he seems unable to do anything. Last term I had a meeting with the Deputy Head and he has suggested doing some restorative justice with my son and the other three boys. They have made my sons life a misery and each day it is really hard to get him to go to school. I really don’t see how him talking to the other boys will make a difference, I just want the other boys punished and for them to leave him alone. What a very difficult time both you and your son seem to have had over the past year, I also understand your anger. Our children are incredibly precious and the thought of someone hurting them physically or emotionally is very hard to manage. Sadly young people can be incredibly cruel to each other. I am glad that you have been able to talk to his form tutor and that you have now spoken to the Deputy Head. Restorative Practice has been used in schools for a while now and has proved to be a very positive way of dealing with issues between young people. It is based on four principals: Respect – for everyone by listening to other opinions and learning to value them. Responsibility- taking responsibility for your own actions. Repair – developing the skills within a school/ community so that its individual members have the necessary skills to identify solutions that repair harm and ensure behaviours are not repeated. Re-integration - working through a structured, supportive process that aims to solve a problem. It can be a very powerful way of supporting young people dealing with a variety of issues including bullying. It is something I have used in a range of schools and have been impressed by the effects and outcomes it has delivered. From your point of view it shows that the school is taking the matter seriously and that a Senior Member of staff will be not only dealing with the situation but will be monitoring what happens. From your sons point of view it means that his voice is heard and that he is involved in the outcome – a very powerful aspect for a young person who has been the victim of bullying. You might find it useful to talk to the Deputy Head a bit more and for them to explain the process, give you the dates when the work will be done and understand what will happen if the work is not successful.

What is Educational Psychotherapy?

Local school children take an artistic journey

For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom.

This year, pupils of Cavendish School, Eastbourne submitted artwork for display in the Towner gallery’s 2012 Schools Art Exhibition. The students created their work based on their thoughts and feelings of the local area, focusing on journeys and maps, with the over arching theme of this years project being “local and cultural pride”. Two of the artists involved take us through the creative process below :

Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. This is Cavendish - Journeys Every day we take journeys and every day we see hear and feel amazing things we take for granted. For example, when we walk to school we never think deeply about what we are seeing. If we took time to stop and take in everything we could appreciate the sounds of the wind whistling through the trees or the sun raising from the horizon. Our Art work is all about these journeys we take every day in our community. To draw or paint the sea you have to take a journey to the beach. To paint the sky, you have to travel, taking a journey to an interesting viewpoint to capture the moment. We have thought about these journeys we take every day, and transformed our travellingthe journeys into Art. First we drew out our journeys as lines and curves, then we went on blindfolded j o u r n e y s recording sensations and the route we were taking. After this we transferred the blindfolded journeys into text on paper. We then took the sensations text and created a circle of words. We swapped around all our journeys and enlarged them onto a giant roll of paper. We then placed our circles of words in the gaps and down the central section of the roll of paper. This is how we created our Art work. We really enjoyed making the piece of Art for it symbolises the fantastic journeys we take in our lives every day. It also in a way sums up Art- for every Art piece there is an emotional or physical journey and story behind it. This project has taught us to appreciate our community, and the world around us through ART.
