10 REASONS TO START TEACHING YOUR PRE-SCHOOLER TO READ THIS SUMMER 1. Poor reading skills are an obstacle to learning. 2. Learning to read takes a long time, this can be frustrating for a child (and a parent!). Spend lots of time with your pre-schooler doing the ‘ground-work’, which will help your child connect the sounds we make with the squiggles on the page. Point out letters and words everywhere you and your child go to help your child understand why they need to be able to read, not just in books. 3. Starting to make your child aware of literacy before they begin school does not make you a pushy parent; it makes you a parent who cares about the future of your child. 4. Your encouragement and the example you set are more important to your child than any external influence. Show you are interested in reading, that you like finding words and discovering what they say with your child. 5. Make learning about letters and words fun, by hunting for a particular letter when you are out, or being the first one to spot a road name. By making learning a fun and positive experience for your child you will help them develop a good attitude towards learning. 6. If you are involved with helping your child learn to read, you will be more likely to spot any problems; such as visual or comprehension difficulties early and be able to access the right help sooner. 7. The more you work with your child, the better you will understand their learning style and pace. Each child is unique, even within the same family; understanding how they learn will enable you to work at the right level for them and manage their (and your) expectations.

8. If you involve yourself in your child’s literacy adventure from the start, supporting them once they begin more formal learning will simply be a natural progression because you will already be familiar with your child’s skills and limitations and you can support them accordingly. 9. Being part of their learning will allow you to clearly see each step of their progress and be proud to know you are part of their success. 10. Playing word games and searching for letters when you are out and about will give your child something to focus on when doing potentially boring tasks, such as shopping.

2 Fun Activities for Literacy Ground-Work Make an Alphabet Scrapbook Label each of the pages of a scrapbook with a different letter of the alphabet (upper and lowercase), clear and large. Encourage your child to trace the letter with their finger, or draw over it with a crayon. Acquire a catalogue, choose a letter and see how many items you can find to cut out and paste on that page. Only tackle one letter at a time and if your child struggles to find items, don’t worry – help them and talk about the letter. Your child will become familiar with the letter over time. You can download free printable pages to make your own Alphabet Scrapbook or buy a ready-made one at : www.kidonamission.co.uk. Write Shopping Lists Write a shopping list for your child with the word and a picture of the item they need to find. No more than seven items. When they find the item, help them to match the word on the list to the label on the item. You can download free printable shopping list templates at www.kidonamission.co.uk.

Bexhill & Senlac Rotary support "Kids day out" For over 20 years since 1990, Rotary clubs throughout the UK have taken part in ‘Kids Out’ Days and have over the years taken up to 250,000 disadvantaged children on a fun day out. The ‘Kids Out’ Day provides the children who attend an experience that brings both fun and happiness into their lives which they would not normally experience. And so it was that on 12th June, Bexhill Rotary Club President Mike Barton boarded a coach at Glenleigh Park Primary Academy, along with 21 children ranging from age 5 to 10 who had been specially selected for their good behaviour and progress in the school, for a day out at Knockhatch Adventure Park near Hailsham. Even though the weather was somewhat overcast, the children were undaunted and were determined to enjoy themselves. Mike Barton reported that everybody had a great day out with the Knockhatch staff providing the group with a private party eating area within Froggies café where ice creams were purchased for all and where the children consumed their lunch with glee. Mike Barton summed up the trip, which was jointly funded by Bexhill and Senlac Rotary Clubs, when he said, “Every one of the children (and adults!) had a great day out and each child was presented with a goody bag to remember their time at Knockhatch. I was very impressed with all the children, it was a great pleasure to see them having such a good time. I wouldn’t have missed this trip for the world and I’m pleased that I took part in this hugely important activity.”

We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work. We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself.

Family Days Out There's nothing like an adventure to create memories that will last a lifetime, you don't have to climb a mountain or discover a lost continent, kids can have adventures just about anywhere!

for local green spaces open to the public. They even have an app "ForestXplorer" available to download to your smartphone, which will help you search for new places to have adventures.

On these pages you'll find a few great examples of fantastic places to take the kids, but in addition to the many, wonderful venues in the local area, there are plenty of things you can do for free.

Another fantastic place to get some inspiration for spicing up a trip to the park or woods is the National Trust's "50 things to do before you're 11¾" website www.50things.org.uk. The 50 activities are split into 5 categories and you can download a checklist to print off. Lots of suggestions for some simple, silly fun, though let's hope no one manages to tick off number 15 "Play in the snow" during the summer holidays!

With nature being at it's most abundant and full of life during the summer, woodland walks can be turned into safari's trying to spot as many different flora and fauna as possible. Sussex boasts a huge number of parks and woodlands, if you're keen to get out and explore somewhere you've adventure never been before, the Forestry Commission website www. forestry.gov.uk/visit is a fantastic place to search

Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk

Dear Alison, My Son is in Year 2 at primary school and I have just been sent a Provision Map. This seems to say that he is having support in some areas. What does this mean? This is a really good question and one I have been asked quite a lot lately. A Provision Map is a document that schools use to help explain to parents the support they are giving that young person for the term ahead. It details what support or intervention this is, who is delivering it and for how long each week. It also states what the focus of the support is and what they hope to achieve at the end. For instance if a child needs support with their reading they might be supported by a teaching assistant each day for 10 minutes following the Bulls Eye programme. This programme is focused on supporting sight vocabulary skills and so might have a focus on ‘Increasing sight vocabulary by 20 words.’ If they need support to help with developing friendships they might be taking part in the Silver SEAL group which would run once a week for 40 minutes and be led by a teacher or teaching assistant. The focus of this work might be: ‘To be able to take turns when playing a game with a group of children.’ At the end of each term the focus or objectives that teachers have set are reviewed and as parents you will receive a document that tells you if your child has met their targets. You might then be given another Provision Map which tells you how your child will be supported over the next term. Dear Alison, My daughter is in Year 5 at primary school and she has been doing some really interesting things in maths, however she is stuck on long

20

multiplication and I don’t know how to help her as I do this in a different way. What should I do? Show her the way I know, or not help her?

has said he has Sensory Processing Difficulties. We have never heard of this before, where could we find out about it?

This is quite a dilemma and one that many parents write and ask about, especially in relation to maths. Maths is now taught in a very different way as children are helped to explore how to do things in a way that supports them understanding why it works. In the past maths has been far more about following the way of doing something with little understanding of why or how this works. I think it is really important that you talk to your daughter about how much you want to help her but that you are aware that the way she is doing this is different from the way you were taught. This helps her understand that there is often more than one way which is an important concept in maths. I would then suggest that you get her to go back and talk to her class teacher and go over it again. It is really good practice for her to ask for support if she hasn’t understood something. Then she can come home and show you her way and you can compare the different ways. We know that when children teach others how to do something they are embedding their understanding of what they are doing – so showing or teaching you will support her understanding.

Sensory Processing is the term that refers to the way our nervous system receives messages from our senses and then turns them into appropriate motor and behavioural responses. Whether you are biting into a sandwich, riding a bicycle, or writing, to successfully complete the activity you need to process the messages your brain is receiving via all you senses. Managing all the sensory messages your brain receives is called "sensory integration." Sensory Processing Disorder is when sensory signals don't get organised into appropriate responses. I think a really good way of describing this is how Occupational Therapist and neuroscientist Jean Ayres described it, she said Sensory Processing Disorder was like a neurological "traffic jam" that prevents certain parts of the brain from receiving the information needed to interpret sensory information correctly. Someone with this difficulty finds sorting out all the information their brain receives really difficult. This then causes difficulties in many everyday activities, especially in school and when learning. There are different sorts of difficulties that children can experience if diagnosed with this difficulty. These can include craving sensory input, so constantly moving to satisfy that need, being very sensitive to a range of things including smells, lights, noise or textures. It is a very interesting area and one that is still being investigated. A really good web site is: Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation www.sinetwork.org

Dear Alison, My son is in year 4 and has always struggled focusing and sitting still at school. His teachers always say that he could do better if only he would settle to work more quickly and stay focused. At home he is the same constantly moving, running or touching things. We talked to our GP as we were concerned that he had ADHD. Our GP referred him to an Occupational Therapist who

Educational Psychotherapist Qualified Teacher and S.E.N.C.O

Is your child struggling at school? Are they ‘stuck’ in their learning? Behaviour causing concern? Educational Psychotherapy is a specialised educational and therapeutic intervention recommended for children and young people with complex emotional barriers to learning and social development. Phone: 01580 881 271 E-mail: alison@alisonwaterhouse.co.uk www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young

people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions, • Restlessness and an inability to focus, • An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. EXCITING NEW COMMUNITY PROGRAMME LIVE AT THE WHITE ROCK THEATRE Following the hugely successful re-launch of the White Rock Youth Theatre in March this year, the White Rock Theatre is expanding the youth & community arts provision at the venue from September 2013, with exciting new developments for people of all ages. The White Rock Theatre has been offering a youth arts programme for a number of years with the Summer & Easter Youth Projects and the weekly White Rock Youth Theatre enjoying successful attendances and is now ready to develop this further to include arts groups for the wider community. From September the White Rock Theatre will be running three new groups for the community, from ages 4-104 (and above!), including the WHITE ROCK TIDDLERS, the WHITE ROCK THEATRE COMPANY and the WHITE ROCK SHOW CHOIR.

The BRAND NEW White Rock Tiddlers will be starting in September for all those 4-7 year olds destined for the stage. This hour and a half, weekly session will provide the opportunity for children aged 4-7yrs old to explore creative play through song, dance and drama, all in the Studio Theatre space downstairs at the theatre. Parents will be welcome to stay, join in or leave your children to it. The White Rock Theatre Company will also be starting in September for all 14-25 year olds with a keen interest in theatre, be that on stage or behind the scenes, to present full scale productions. Members of the company will work on stage and behind the scenes developing theatre production and directing skills as well as performance skills. Finally, the White Rock Theatre is excited to announce its first Community Arts group. The White Rock Show Choir will be open to all those aged 18 and over and will run for an hour & a half one mid week evening. The focus is on singing rock, pop, gospel & a cappella music in harmony. You don’t have to read music as all songs are taught by ear. There’s no audition required, just the will to have a go and enjoy yourself. If you want any further information on any of these exciting new groups then please contact Nikki Leach at the White Rock Theatre on 01424 462287 or email nikki@whiterocktheatre.org.uk.
