Delight the senses with a visit to Arlington Bluebell Walk. The Arlington Bluebell Walk, which takes in three working farms, has been delighting countryside lovers and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for Sussex charities since it first opened in 1972. There are seven different walks to try, all of them offering the chance to see one of the most spectacular carpets of native bluebells in the UK. Seventeen charities will take part in the 2014 event, fundraising for their different causes by providing food and drink to walkers. To date, the Arlington Bluebell Walk has raised more than £500,000 ( todays value) for 60 local causes since the attraction opened to the public 42 years ago. WhaleFest 2014 The whales are coming to Brighton Brighton will be taken over by life-sized whales and dolphins this March as the world’s largest whale festival ‘WhaleFest’ visits the city for the third time. And there is no better opportunity to rub shoulders with giants than at this family-friendly event. WhaleFest takes place on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th March in the exhibition rooms of the Hilton Brighton Metropole. Here, thousands of people will come face to face with replica whales and dolphins, take virtual whale watching trips indoors, and immerse themselves in 360° submarine adventures. Guest speakers at the event include celebrity presenter Gok Wan, BBC Deadly 60’s Steve Backshall, BBC Coast’s Miranda Krestovnikoff, and the makers of TV’s ‘Spy in the Pod’. The event also features some of the world’s leading experts on whales and dolphins, including ‘The Woman Who Swims With Killer Whales’ Ingrid Visser, Sam Berg from the movie BlackFish, and actress Virginia McKenna OBE. The event launch day of Friday 14th March sees a life-sized killer whale make its way through the city before being ‘released’ back into the sea, a free stage show from CBeebies stars Andy and Sid, and an amazing interactive night-time projection of a singing humpback whale! Have you ever thought about what happens to the stuff you put down your toilet or your sink? Our seas are not in a good way at the moment. And on 10th October 2015, new European Union standards could mean the water at our beaches is unfit to swim in. The Clean Seas Please campaign is all about people coming together to make the water in our seas nicer. We want to raise awareness and understanding of the problems facing our nearby beaches at the moment. By making a few changes now, we can have a big impact. It is time for us to take action so that families in the local area can continue to enjoy days out at the beach for years to come. There are lots of little changes that we can make in our everyday lives to limit the pollution of our rivers and sea water. Many people are already helping by changing what they put down the toilet or sink, using a bin in their bathrooms for non-human waste and scraping fat / food waste off their dishes before washing up. A lot of different factors contribute to the pollution, such as waste water from washing machines or dish waters going into the wrong water pipes.
Another issue is bacteria in the droppings of the many seagulls on the beaches being washed into the sea so we need to think about our rubbish on the beach too. The less food seagulls have to eat, the less droppings they leave. We want as many people as possible to take responsibility for spreading the word. If we can overcome these problems as a community our beaches can be among the best in the country and remain lovely places for all to visit. Clean Seas Please is working with trades, businesses and most importantly the people of Hastings and Bexhill, and the surrounding area, to do as much as we can to help. We are involved in local events to promote the work that is already being done and to give more information about the campaign. The campaign is funded by the Environment Agency and managed by Hastings Voluntary Action and Rother Voluntary Action. Childcare When the time comes for your child to start childcare, it can be a difficult time for you and them. However, there are ways to make the transition easier, here are some tips from the NHS website to help parents navigate the process successfully: Tell your childminder or nursery all about your child. They’ll need details about their routine, likes and dislikes, feeding habits (particularly if you’re still breastfeeding) and so on. When you leave or collect your child, try to make time to talk and find out how things are going. Make sure that you and your childminder or nursery workers agree on important issues. It’s important that you take a similar approach to things like discipline and potty training. Allow your child to get used to it gradually. If you can, start by leaving your child for a short time and gradually build up the length of time that you leave them. You might begin leaving your child before you go back to work. Support and reassure your child in every way you can. The early weeks are likely to be difficult for both of you. A regular routine and a handover that’s as smooth as possible will help. It’s perfectly normal for your child to cry when you leave, but the crying usually stops once you’ve gone. Don’t hang around and, once you’ve left, don’t go back.
If you said you’d be back at a certain time, make sure you are. Share the experience. Chat to older children about what they’ve been doing while you’ve been away. Talk about the person or people who look after them. Show them it’s all part of normal life and something to look forward to. Make time. Whatever else you need to sacrifice (such as the housework), it’s vital to make time to spend with your child when they’re at home. Don’t feel guilty. Evidence shows that children do well in high-quality childcare. There’s no need to feel guilty about not being there all the time.

Hosting a Foreign Student Young people who have the opportunity to travel abroad perceive it as an exciting opportunity to broaden and enrich their lives. In Hastings we see more than 30 000 language students visiting the town, with the majority of those home stays. We believe the language student business contributes around £35m to the local economy. There are many language schools in Hastings and together with Sussex Police we work in partnership as members of HOSAC (Hastings Overseas Students Advisory Council) to safeguard all students that come to our town.
In conjunction with HOSAC, Sussex Police run ‘Operation Columbus’ throughout the year. We hold fortnightly meetings during the peak summer months to discuss ways in which we can make sure every student feels safe and welcome in Hastings, with more strategic planning and debrief meetings at the start and end of the main season. Most students stay with host families and the role of the ‘host’ has become more crucial to their
student visitor. Many families ‘host’ to broaden their experience and provide opportunities for their children; others do it for financial benefit. Hosting often leads to lifelong friendships. Here are some key tips should you wish to become a host family: •Encourage your student to speak English as much as possible in your home (especially if they are studying a language course). •Encourage your student to feel at home and treat him/her as a member of the family rather than just a lodger. •Try not to host more than one young person of the same native language unless by special agreement with the language school organisation. •Provide an environment in which it is possible for the student to carry on his/her studies. •Respect the student’s different cultural background and be sensitive to their needs. •Provide the student with a well balanced and appropriate diet taking into consideration any special requirements. •Maintain a close liaison with the language school and therefore be in a position to help resolve any problems that the student has during their stay. •Hold a Gas Safety certificate for your home. Dear Alison, We have a son in Year 3 at primary school who has just been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. The Occupational Therapist who assessed him has given school a Sensory Diet for them to use in school. Can you help us understand what this is and should we be doing something at home? Sensory Processing refers to how people use the information provided by all the sensations provided by the body and the external environment. We tend to think of all the sensations separately however they all come together to give us a picture of the world and our place within it. Our senses integrate to give us an understanding of who we are, where we are and what is happening around us in the world. Our brain takes these incoming signals about sights, sounds, textures, smells, tastes, balance and movement and helps us understand our sensory experiences which then allows us to respond and behave appropriately. Walking through a wood on a bright summer’s day you might smell damp moss and look around to find it. You might remember the feeling of it from childhood and stop and touch it. Professionals have found that different sensory preferences and intolerances affect play, work, learning, social interactions and everyday activities such as dressing and eating for some children. For children with a Sensory Processing Disorder their responses to sensory stimulation may be out of proportion to the experience. For instance the walk through the woods and the smell of moss might be too much and cause them to feel sick. They may be over responsive, under responsive or engage in sensory seeking behaviours. People with sensory difficulties have great difficulty working out what is going

on inside and outside their bodies. For example a child with difficulty integrating tactile (touch) input may avoid unpleasant touching experiences – like getting his hands dirty in sand or with paint. Whereas another child may crave this touch experience and actively seek it out. A Sensory Diet is a carefully designed activity plan that provides a child with the sensory input they need to stay focused and organised throughout the day. It is put together by the Occupational Therapist. This may mean keeping things calm or increasing levels of arousal. As adults we often fiddle or jiggle a knee to stay focused or even chew gum to stay awake. We will have a soak in a hot bath to unwind. Children each have an individual set of needs that the sensory diet identifies and then puts in place through the use of activities throughout the day to meet these needs. The activities help restructure the Childs nervous system over time so that they are more able to manage their environment and regulate themselves more easily. Dear Alison, We have a daughter who has just gone into reception who has difficulties talking. School have said that they are very concerned that this will impact on her future progress academically. When she was in Nursery the staff there told us that they were not concerned about her and that she would get better as she grew older. We don’t know what to believe. What should we do? Thank you for your letter. I have chosen your letter as speech and language difficulties seem to have been a theme over the past months. Schools are very aware of the importance of speech and language and embed a variety of
activities within lessons to both strengthen and develop language. Sometimes for some children specific difficulties emerge. To help them identify what the difficulties are they will undertake a range of diagnostic assessments (assessments that help them identify specific areas of difficulty.) In school two main assessments are used – Speechlink which identifies specific speech articulation needs and Languagelink which looks at how language is used as well as understanding. These assessments are undertaken by either SENCo’s or trained Teaching Assistants. Once the assessment is carried out a specific programme is generated for staff to follow with the child. At this point most schools will meet with parents to talk about what the assessment has highlighted and to ensure that they have things at home to work on with their child to support this. After the individual programme is completed then the child is retested to see the progress they have made. If at this point no progress has been made or school is still concerned then schools can make a referral to the Speech and Language Therapists within the NHS. At the moment Speech and Language Therapists are incredibly busy and referrals can take several months so this way of screening and working helps put something in place to support children within school. It also helps school staff describe and illustrate the difficulties the child has when referring them. I am aware that some schools feel that specialist help from Speech and Language Therapists is invaluable and so they choose to use Independent Speech and Language Therapists to support staff and children as soon as difficulties have been identified rather than just wait for an appointment.

Children meet either in Hastings on a Saturday morning or Thursday after school in Rye. Adults get their turn on a Tuesday at St Mary in the Castle, in Hastings. Dancing to the tunes that we all like to boogie around the kitchen to when we are cooking dinner. We offer discounts for siblings and should your children attend different clubs. At Battle School of Dancing we offer classes in the main dance disciplines for children aged three to young adult. Learn ballet, modern and tap in a fun atmosphere with the emphasis on learning in a non-competitive environment. The school has been established since September 1994, and has a hundred plus pupils. We hold small friendly classes Tuesday to Friday. Dancing is an excellent way of building confidence and an understanding of music. Join Chestnut Tree House for a 4 mile or 10 mile walk under the stars! Back for 2014 and now in its fifth year, join Chestnut Tree House and hundreds of women for Eastbourne's annual walk under the stars. Night to Remember is our annual midnight walk in aid of Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Over the past four years, 2400 ladies have taken to the streets and seafront of Eastbourne and have raised a collective £292,000 for Chestnut Tree House, which has made a huge difference to the lives of the children and families using our services. Now we are 10... Unbelievably, 2014 is the tenth anniversary of eat @ cafes, and they will be celebrating in style throughout the year, with more of their familiar events and menus and some new stuff too! Director Louise Kelleher says: ‘We are delighted to be able to celebrate this landmark for the business, particularly as it hasn’t always been easy. Opening our first branch seems like a very long time ago and it was a real learning curve for us all, as well as being great training for our busier locations. Trading in recent times has been affected by some very erratic weather, but we have achieved a great deal and we are very proud of our business, the fantastic staff who work so hard throughout the year, and our wonderful community of customers and friends.’
