The
Reading Corner Books are a hugely popular gift for children, a good book can give a child of any age hours and hours of pleasure. Not only from the enjoyment of the story itself, but also (particularly for younger children) from the experience of spending time with an adult, reading together and discussing the story. So, with Christmas just around the corner, we set our expert team of young readers the task of reviewing just a few of the huge number of new books available for young readers this Christmas. First up, we have six year old Nancy Lansdell who attends St Mary Star of the Sea Primary School in Hastings. She gives us her opinion on three, brightly illustrated books from Maverick Publishing: A Scarf and a Half Bibble and the Bubbles By Amanda Brandon & Catalina Echeverri by Alice Hemming & Sara Sanchez This is a story about a little sheep called Lionel who isn’t This is a story about a boy called Bobby and an Alien very impressed with the present that his gran gave to called Bibble. Bobby loves blowing Bubbles and him. Until his friends show him some fun games to play wonders where they end up. Bibble loves bubbles too with the Scarf and a half. and wonders where they come from. I liked this book especially the funny bits. My favourite Their love of bubbles brings them together and when part was when the scarf went PING and all of Lionel’s Bibble goes home he leaves Bobby a very special friends fell to the floor. bubble that never pops. They can stay friends for I would recommend this book for under 5’s or for older ever! I really liked reading this book. I liked having it children who can read it themselves. read to me and I liked reading by myself too. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. Yuck said the Yak By Alex English & Emma Levey This is a very funny book about a Yak and a boy called Alfie. It is funny because everything Alfie offers the Yak to eat the yak says YUCK! And when the yak then offers Alfie some grass Alfie says YUCK! I like the way that lots of words are written in bold so that I know how much expression to use when reading. I would definitely recommend this book as it will make the reader laugh. Next up, Lily Stubbs, aged 8, from Ark Blacklands Primary Academy reviews another Maverick book: I Wish I'd Been Born a Unicorn By Rachel Lynn and Andrea Ringli At first it's a bit of a sad story because the horse has no friends other than flies and fleas. Then he speaks to an owl and things change, in the end he has friends. The moral of the story is: you don't have to change yourself to be liked! Each of these Maverick titles, and many others are available at Waterstones, or online at Amazon, to find out more, visit: www.maverickbooks.co.uk Lastly, Izzy Lansdell, aged 10, from St Mary Star of the Sea Primary School gives us her review of "Prankenstein" by Andy Seed: Prankenstein is a book about a boy called Soapy who dreams of how to prank his mum and dad. However he is surprised when his grandma is blasted through the roof on her stair lift. He knows that something is not right. Who is doing the pranks? Soapy and his friends set out to find out who/what is behind it all. I enjoyed reading this book, my favourite bit was when Soapy woke to find his mum stuck to a stall, his maids knickers all tied together and his dad was painted green. This is a funny book that will at times make you laugh out loud! I particularly like the notes put at the bottom of some of the pages to let you know what some things mean. Some of these were hilarious…Note. ‘Satin thong things’ Are very tiny knickers that make Soapy (and his Dad) blush. I would definitely recommend this book for children who like a giggle when reading. Prankenstein is published by fat fox books and is available from Waterstones or online at Amazon, to find out more, visit www.fatfoxbooks.com.

We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work. We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself.
Blacklands Playgroup Our aim here at Blacklands Playgroup is to provide a secure and caring, safe and happy environment in which your child will learn and develop through play and a stimulating environment. Praise and encouragement are very important in helping children to succeed; we take children from the age of 2 to 5. We are Ofsted Registered, accept government funding and also take part in the Co-operative Employee Benefits Childcare Voucher Scheme. We understand that parents need flexibility when it comes to childcare and hours. We offer very flexible dates and times. We welcome parent’s visits and look forward to meeting you here at Blacklands. Please call Sharon Reeve (owner) to book an appointment: 07939 635799

Dear Alison, Our son is in Year 4 and when we met with his class teacher she has told us that he is really struggling to put his ideas on paper and write. She has suggested that we support him at home however we don’t know what to do. Please help. There are lots of fun activities you can play with children to encourage and support their creative storytelling and writing. The ones I have listed below are particular favourites of children I have worked with. Story Dice: You need 5 wooden blocks or alternatively make 5 cardboard cubes. Each cube is for one area – characters, places, things, magical items and weather descriptions. (You can change these and make them what you want.) Draw pictures on each of the faces in line with the theme. Your characters could be a witch, farmer, professor, girl, boy, pirate for example. When you have made all the dice you throw them and then create a story around the ideas that have come up on the dice. One person starts to tell the story a sentence at a time, and the other person writes down what they say. This way you both get to talk and write and have fun together. Story Mats: On a large piece of paper you can drawn your backdrop this might be a mountain scene with a forest and a path running through it towards a shiny lake or a forest with a path running through towards a stream in front of a large cave. You can paint this, make it into a collage or use felt tip pens or coloured crayons. Use a range of small character models that children like to play with or create your own drawn onto card. Use these to tell the story as you act it out using the story mat. Again take turns to tell the story and write down what each person says. Story in a jar: For this you need a large glass jar if you haven’t got one you can use a shoebox. Inside the jar/box create a model of a story. This might be a grassy hill made out of green fabric and a tree made from a twig. On the tree you might put two owls made from feathers stuck to card and then on the grass might be a magic box. You can also hang pictures of birds or fairies down from the jar lid. Once you have created your jar then you can write the story on a scroll of paper and then place this inside the jar. Dear Alison, We have two children a son who is 7 and a daughter who is 5. They seem to be constantly arguing and fighting and it is really getting us down. This has now spilt into school with our son being very unkind to his sister at playtime. We have tried all sorts of things and really don’t know what to do. When two children find being together really difficult this can become very hard for families to manage. Siblings do not always get along and their fighting can
1212
be really hard to deal with. The first thing I would suggest is making sure each of them gets special one to one time with you on a daily basis. I fully understand that this can be very difficult to organise however I have found that this can make the biggest difference. Once organised and then worked with, children respond really well to understanding that this will happen on a regular basis and that they do not have to fight for time with you or their Dad. If you spend time with your daughter first your son must learn that he is not to interrupt. You must make sure that you don’t answer the phone or get caught with other things during this time. Your daughter then has 20 minutes special time with you to play any one of a range of games. This is easily worked into a bedtime routine. With the game moving to teeth cleaning, story time and then bed. Once your daughter is in bed then you can spend time with your son. Again this can be playing a range of games that he enjoys. Once this special time has been put into place it is really important to keep it going even when the disagreements have subsided. The other areas families I have worked with have found really useful are to ensure that you ‘notice’ the children being kind to each other or others and feed that back with a verbal account of what you liked and why. ‘I noticed you picking up your sisters doll from the floor so that the dog didn’t take it. Thank you for being so thoughtful.’ If you build this sort of observation and feedback into family life it has the potential to make a big difference and also to help children understand and take on the values of the family. The second area that families have found useful is based on the work of restorative justice. When an argument happens you sit down with both children and allow them to talk about what happened without the other interrupting. They both have a turn. You then ask a series of questions to both of them: What were you thinking at the time? What were you feeling at the time? What has happened since the incident? What have you been thinking? What have you been feeling? Who else has been affected? Once you have asked both children the questions in turn then and the other has listened to the answer you then move onto asking them: • Ask “A” What do you need from “B” for this to be sorted out? • Ask “B” What do you need from “A” for this to be sorted out? Identify common ground e.g. “So you are both saying that you need/feel is ….” or “We’ve heard you both say …” • Ask “A” What can you do to help move this forward? • Ask “B” What can you do to help move this forward? • Restate what each is agreeing to do and summarise agreement.
The whole purpose of Restorative Justice is to teach and enable the children to manage arguments on their own rather than have adults always sorting arguments out. This is a very useful process as it sets the routine of listening to each other, thinking about solving difficulties in a collaborative way and can prove very useful as a family tool in years to come. It is also very good at helping children understand how their behaviours or actions can make others feel. It also supports the development of emotional literacy and being able to put strong feelings into words – an essential life skill for your children, that will help them in the future. Dear Alison, My husband and I were very interested in one of your letters from last month on Dyslexia. Our son is in Year 6 and has a diagnosis of ‘at risk of dyslexia’ a definition which we really didn’t understand until we read your letter. Our son really struggles with spelling. Every Monday his class have a spelling test which he now dreads. We try and help him all weekend to learn his spellings however this seems to cause lots of arguments as he doesn’t want to, finds it really difficult, and then doesn’t want to go into school on Monday. Have you any ideas on what we can do? Spellings can be really difficult and for some children create huge anxieties. I would suggest that the best way to manage this is a little bit every day rather than spoiling your weekend. If you learn one or two spellings every day then the list soon gets done rather than trying to learn 10 or more at the weekend. There are a variety of ways to learn spellings and the first thing is to work out which way your son learns his best. This is something you are going to have to explore together. Try out different methods and see which ones work best then use that one. There is the look, cover, write read method where you look at the word and create it in your minds eye. You then cover the word and try to write it. After writing it you check it. If it is correct then you move onto the next word if not you go through the process again. There is also the method of copying down the word saying each letter as your write, writing each word 5 times and then try writing it without looking. Another method is writing the word and making a picture out of it for example: ‘look’ where the oo are turned into eyes this however only works for some words however for visual learners can be really fun. You can also make up mnemonics for example the word because can be learnt by the rhyme b-big e-elephants c-can aalways u-understand s-small e-elephants. Rhythm r– rhythm h-helps y-your h-hips t-to m-move. The final method is the NLP spelling method which you can find on line. This I have found particularly useful for some children.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions, • Restlessness and an inability to focus, • An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. For more information, contact Alison on: 01580 881 271 or alison@alisonwaterhouse. co.uk

NSPCC teams up with Santa to make Christmas wishes come true Children’s charity the NSPCC is once again teaming up with Santa to make children’s Christmas wishes come true by sending them a personalised Letter from Santa, sent direct from the North Pole via Rudolph Mail. The colourful, beautifully illustrated letters include the child’s (or big kid’s) name, age, gender, and a few other details which only Santa could know. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate baby’s first Christmas too – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Christmas is an exciting time of year but for some children it can be an incredibly difficult and lonely time. By requesting a Letter from Santa for a suggested donation of £5, the NSPCC can be there for vulnerable children, giving them someone to turn to when they need advice and support, this Christmas and beyond. Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa could help the NSPCC’s ChildLine service be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone. Every £12 raised could help trained ChildLine Schools Service volunteers talk to one primary school child about abuse, improving their understanding of abuse and how they can stay safe. The ChildLine Schools Service has already spoken to 1,186 children in schools across East Sussex.
Tracey Bravo, NSPCC community fundraising manager for East Sussex, said: “Christmas is such magical time of year for children so why not bring even more magic and excitement by ordering a Letter from Santa for a friend or relative and support the NSPCC during the festive season.” Santa’s mailroom is open until 15 December 2014, and all those who request a Letter from Santa this year will be entered into a draw to win a Center Parcs holiday for a family of four. Request your Letter from Santa from 1st October 2014 at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or by calling 0845 839 9304. About the NSPCC: The NSPCC is the UK’s leading children's charity specialising in child protection. Our vision is to end cruelty to children in the UK and we make a difference for all children by standing up for their rights, listening to them, helping them when they need us and by making them safe. The NSPCC runs projects and services across the United Kingdom and Channel Islands to help vulnerable children. We also provide ChildLine, the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people and a helpline for adults who are worried about a child or want advice.

Second Hand Glasses Appeal Benenden Hospital and Benenden Health have joined forces with a UK charity to collect second hand glasses – which will be sent to people overseas who cannot afford to buy them. Donations of spectacles are to be collected between now and Christmas, which will then be sent inside a shipping container to The Gambia at the beginning of next year. Volunteers with the UK registered charity BACE, Building and Assisting Communities with Education, will then give the glasses to representatives from the National Eye Health Programme, who will distribute pairs to needy people in the most impoverished and rural parts of the country. Glasses can be dropped off at Benenden Hospital, in Goddard’s Green Road, Benenden, Cranbrook – into a collection bin in the main reception area. There are also collection bins at Costa, Tenterden High Street, Wilson Wilson and Hancock opticians, in Tenterden High Street and at the Kentish Express newspaper office in North Street, Ashford. Benenden Hospital is supporting the costs of the shipping container which will take the glasses from the UK to The Gambia. The hospital has also donated old and redundant medical equipment which BACE will use in its new health clinic in a village called Bonsa. The clinic is to be officially opened in November. The charity set up and runs a nursery school there too, along with a feeding programme, which aims to ensure that the school children have at least one nutritious meal a day. School equipment will go into the container too. For more information on donating glasses please contact Jane Barlow at benenden hospital on 01580 240 333 or by emailing jane.barlow@benenden.org.uk
