Local Boys to appear in "Peter Pan" This year’s swashbuckling pantomime "Peter Pan" at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings will feature a number of young performers from the local area. Thomas Gater from Bexhill-on-Sea and Thomas Matthews from Battle will both share the role of John Darling alongside TV and Stage star Paul Nicholas as the villainous Captain Hook on openng night in December. Thomas Gater started acting at the age of 7 when he joined a local theatre group. This led to several TV appearances . His northern accent proved to be helpful when he appeared in the BBC hit series Not Going Out alongside Bobby Ball. Thomas Matthews has appeared in many local shows and most currently will be in the forthcoming Hastleons production of Oliver. Thomas is keeping up the family tradition of appearing on stage in pantomime as last year his sister was one of the Seven Dwarfs and when Peter Pan was last produced at the White Rock Theatre his older brother Ben played the role of Michael.
Three brothers from Eastbourne, Zac, Solly and Luke Adlam also successfully auditioned to join the cast of Peter Pan. All three have a great love for performing and all have appeared on the Eastbourne stage many times over the last 7 years with local society the Rattonians. Zac played the young Alex in the English premier of Fame Forever, and, his favourite to date, Gavroche in Les Misérables. Professionally they have also worked alongside Jamie Oliver, David Baddiel and appeared in BBC’s Waking the Dead. Zac has danced with the London Dance Theatre, run by Neil Westmoreland. The brothers all train at the Eastbourne Academy of Dancing. Whilst Zac also attends Goldmans Stage School. Luke and Solly will join the Lost boys and Zac as a dancer.
Your chance to WIN ! The White Rock Theatre are offering two lucky Family Buzz readers the chance to win a family ticket to see their fantastic production of "Peter Pan" on Dec 8th at 7pm. Nothing cheers up the winter doldrums like a fantastic Pantomime with all the trimmings. For a great family outing that will have everyone howling with laughter, you can't beat The Hastings Stage Studio's production of Dick Whittington and His Cat at the Phoenix Arts Centre, December 6th - 9th. Back by popular demand, here's what critics had to say about the show in 2009: "Epic...a magical mix with the perfect balance of great songs, dance and humour...Who needs to import half-forgotten soap actors when you have this sort of quality right here...The quick-fire script cracks along at an amazing pace fitting in an incredible number of jokes and quips – none of them tired or stale... And, of course you still need a cast with the raw talent to pull it off -- the Stage Studio had it in spades... Spellbinding stuff!" -- Hastings Observer, Dec 2009 This highly original production is not only hilarious and full of great singing and dancing, but excellent value, too, with Discounts for Children, OAP's, Families of 4 and Group Bookings. Ring the Box Office now on 07934 338954 for an unforgettable family treat. Active Parenting in Early Literacy Being in the background whilst your child is playing, exploring and trying stuff out, is an essential aspect of parenting because it enables your child to push their boundaries, safe in the knowledge that Mum or Dad is ready and waiting if something goes amiss. This is passive parenting. Active parenting is about teaching your child to play a simple game, showing them how to turn the pieces round on a puzzle to make them fit, talking about things you can see on a walk, the colours of the leaves and asking them questions about the shapes they see. Actively demonstrating your interest in the world around you and sharing this with your child will spark their imagination and teach them to look at and be interested in even the most mundane. An enthusiasm for learning about things is one of the most important skills you can teach your young child.
Unfortunately, most parents work long hours so there is precious little time for teaching and for many of us, knowing how and where to start is a stumbling block, but learning to read is one of the most important skills that you can help your child with. Children who do not learn to read well fall behind at school, impacting their entire education. Your positive influence is the most important factor in developing a literacy loving child. It is not difficult, or even time-consuming to integrate literacy into everyday tasks with young children, by being aware of the words around you, pointing them out to your child and demonstrating the value in being able to read what they say; for example, ‘the sign on this door says OPEN, that’s good, we can go in’ or, ‘Look at that sign, it has a curly S just like at the beginning of your name’. Words and letters are everywhere and if your child uses any sort of computerised game or watches television, you can be sure they will recognise the words START and CBEEBIES well before they can actually read the letters.
5 Top Tips For Early Literacy 1. Read in front of your child, a book, a device, a cereal packet – just let them know YOU like to read things! 2. Write your child’s name on their drawings and search out letters that appear in their name – children are naturally egotistical and will be more interested in letters that ‘belong’ to them. 3. Say the sound a letter makes, rather than the letter name because this is how they learn to put the sounds together to make a word; for example ceeay-tee does not blend together to form the word cat but cuh-ah-tuh does.
Of course, as a parent, much of this comes naturally but, taking it a step further to start teaching your own child academic skills such as reading and maths can be a challenge - and why do you need to, surely that is what school is for? Well, yes and no!
4. Play letter spotting games when you go out – give your child a letter on a piece of paper and challenge them to find a match on shop signs. 5. Read to your child every day. For lots more ideas and free resources visit:
www.kidonamission.co.uk.
More than ever, children are failing to attain good standards of literacy. Excellent teachers are overburdened with paperwork, faced with oversized classes and increasing numbers of difficult-to-manage children. Along-side this have been reports about the importance of parental influence in a child’s education, indeed my daughter’s headmistress told us parents that the children who do best at school are the ones whose parents take the most active role in their education.

What is it with kids and mud ? Has any other phrase in the history of parenting wasted more breath than "Stay out of that mud"? We know they wont, and let's face it, we probably didn't either when we were kids! But really, why should we try to keep them away from it? Mud's wonderfully tactile stuff, it's fascinating to watch how it oozes, splashes and squelches when you tread on it. That's what makes kids kids, the fact that they have to squish something to find out what it does. Like it or loathe it, there's going to be no shortage of mud over the next six months or so. For me, winter is time to embrace your inner hippo and get out there and enjoy some unsanitised nature. As the old saying goes "There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes", if you ensure no one's wearing their best clothes and no one has a hole in their welly, why bother trying to keep the kids out of the mud ? You can't beat them, so you might as well join them, get your own wellies on and get squelching. Mud's not just great to get your wellies in either, it's also loads of fun to cycle through. I don't know about you, but personally, I enjoy riding a bike through a muddy puddle today every bit as much as
I did when I was 10. Last winter, my daughter and I found a ridiculously muddy patch of ground while we were out cycling. It took us a good ten minutes of getting stuck, falling off, getting back on, falling off again and then getting off and pushing before we got through it. By the time we'd got back to firmer ground we were caked in several shades of brown, but we were both smiling! There's something quite satisfying about getting as much mud on you and your bike as you possibly can. A bucket of soapy water and a squirt of the hose is all it takes to fix, cleaning your bikes together afterwards is almost as much fun as the ride. Fortunately, there's no shortage of open spaces in the local area where we can cycle, walk, jump, slip and slide in the mud. The forests at Bedgebury and Friston are particularly muddy places after heavy rain, but you can find mud just about anywhere. There's really no need to stay indoors just because it's been raining. Pick some woodlands, grab your wellies and get out in the fresh air. You never know, you might enjoy it!

We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. Mr Peters Swimming School is the one stop, fasttrack way to getting your children swimming. We have classes from babies to teens catering for all levels of swimming. Our aim is to teach children to be safe, confident and competent swimmers. Our experienced ASA or STA trained teachers and coaches will encourage and nurture your little fish. Our baby/toddler groups are small fun filled sessions with the emphasis on water safety, this then leads to water confidence both for you and your child. The non-swimmer lessons are in groups of a maximum 4 pupils, giving your child more attention from the teacher and a lesson tailored to your little one. The popular junior squad lessons build not only technique but also stamina and fitness which is so important for growing bodies. Our top squad is coached in a 25m pool giving children a chance to perfect water skills and diving alongside swimming.
We're having a ball! Little Kickers and Little Rugby are fun filled football and rugby programmes executed in a friendly, pressure free environment. We run football and rugby classes for girls and boys aged 18 months to 7 years all over the country and the world. Our classes, that are conducted by qualified FA coaches, teach the children invaluable life skills such as listening, sharing, taking turns and teamwork. Much emphasis is put on simple learning concepts such as colours and numbers and helping the children concentrate on basic balance, agility and coordination.

Buy with confidence - Toy Safety As winter approaches and Christmas themes begin to appear in the shops and in advertising, many people’s thoughts turn to the subject of Christmas presents. Children may think of the latest fashionable item, the annual ‘must-have’ toy that is invariably hard to find, or writing the wish-list to Santa Claus. Unfortunately, the safety of a toy is likely to be low on the priorities of an excited child and so it is left to others to protect them. Manufacturers, retailers, enforcement bodies and the buyer can all play a responsible role to fill this gap. Legislation to ensure toy safety has made great progress in the last 50 years and we can be confident that toys have never come under greater scrutiny. Indeed, it was only in 2011 that the latest Toys (Safety) Regulations came into force. These control most toys used by children under 14, with a particular emphasis where they are intended for those yet to celebrate their third birthday. An example of the special attention is to prevent the danger from swallowing small parts. Other physical characteristics will be checked such as risks from cords, moving parts, sharp edges or toys that fire objects. Even the packaging is assessed to eliminate the danger of asphyxiation or strangulation. The flammability of materials and electrical safety come under intense examination. Toys must also be hygienic so any liquid in filled toys will be checked for its suitability, and toys for under threes should be cleanable. Manufacturers and importers of course have the

greatest responsibility as they must demonstrate that the toy meets the over-riding objective not to jeopardise the safety or health of the child when used as it is intended or in a foreseeable way. The manufacturer will declare conformance to safety standards by placing a CE mark and his name and address on it. Retailers must check the toys they sell are properly marked and take action where there might be a safety risk. How can the buyer contribute to the toy safety process? By following a 5 point plan: 1. Purchasing from reputable sources 2. Checking for a CE mark and the manufacturer’s name and address. Look out for a lion mark, a safety and quality symbol backed by the British Toy & Hobby Association 3. Reading and following instructions. Remember to keep toys with small parts out of access to children under three. 4. Monitoring for condition and cleanliness 5. Reporting safety concerns The East Sussex County Council Trading Standards Service is an enforcement authority under the Regulations and toy safety concerns can be notified via 08454 040506. Further information about toy safety and other Trading Standards activities can be obtained from : www.eastsussex.gov.uk/business/tradingstandards

Ask Alison...
Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison My daughter has a range of problems that have meant that school has been very difficult for her since she started in Reception. She is now in Year 5. The school has just appointed a new SENCo and she has told me this week that she thinks she should have a Statement and that she wants my permission to request one. I am not sure what this means and if it will get her the help she needs. Thank you for your letter. This is an important area and one which I get many letters about. A statement is a legal document that identifies a child or young person’s needs and sets out how those needs must be met by a school. It is a process that can be initiated by a school or a parent as the first stage is to request that the Local Education Authority undertakes an assessment to identify a child’s special educational needs. This request which is completed by the school is then sent to the LEA where it is looked at by a panel of professionals made up of Teachers, Head Teachers, SENCo’s and Educational Psychologists. The panel considers the information sent in and decides whether to request specific repor ts from other professionals. These might include Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists as well as other people who are already working with the child. These reports then go back to the panel that consider the evidence and then decide whether a Statement of Special Educational Needs is issued. The statement then defines what the child or young person’s needs
28
are and how they should be met by a school. The statement also names the school that they believe can meet the child’s needs. Parents are involved in the process at each stage and their views are recorded. If a statement is issued then it is reviewed each year in a meeting organised by the child’s school to ensure that the child’s needs are still relevant and that the school they attend are still meeting them. Dear Alison I am struggling to get my son to complete his homework each night to the extent that I end up doing a lot of it for him just to keep the peace and prevent the arguments and outbursts that result. Although my son seems quite bright and articulate he struggles with reading and writing. The homework that is sent home always seems to be focused on this. Thank you for your letter, you may be interested to know that you are by no means the first to write with this dilemma. I have worked with many parents who are also faced with this difficulty every evening as well as teachers who are aware that parents are completing their child’s homework! D i f f e re n t schools have different policies on homework but all are using it to support or develop learning and skills linked to the work they are doing in the classroom. If your son is struggling the best place to start is a discussion with his classroom teacher. Explain the difficulty and then look at different ways of dealing with this by looking at what the class teacher is trying to achieve.
It is important to support your son and you can do this in lots of ways, however doing his homework for him is not going to help him in the future. Make sure he has a good space to work and that noise, distractions and interruptions are kept to a minimum. Turn the TV off. Try and give yourself the time to give him the focused help he needs and not try to multi-task with cooking tea at the same time. Decide together when it is best to be done, does he need to get rid of some energy first before he can concentrate or is it better if he gets straight on with it? Does he need a drink and a biscuit to start? Take the time together to look and think about what has to be done and listen to what he thinks. Keep comments as positive as possible. Be clear about what he will be able to do after he has finished and try and stay calm and relaxed as he will pick up on your anxiety. If you can enjoy sharing the learning with your son then he will soon learn to enjoy the learning with you. Dear Alison Our daughter has a diagnosis of Social Communication Difficulties. She has just started in year 3 and is finding things very difficult. Friendships are hard as she finds sharing and thinking of others hard to do so other children don’t want to play with her. Other children are finding her behaviour difficult to cope with. She is never invited back to play with other children and this week she was the only girl who wasn’t invited to a birthday party. It is very hard for us as parents when we see and feel that our children

are being left out or that others don’t understand them. Your daughter has a difficulty that is impacting on her friendships and her ability to develop and sustain social interactions with others. For some children these social skills do not come naturally and they need to have them broken down into small components and then specifically taught and practiced. It is however something that she can learn and improve but it is something that you and others will have to teach and support her in doing. There are a variety of things both you and school can put in place to support her. Within school there are a range of interventions that can help break down and teach her the social skills that she needs to have positive interactions with her peers. These Social Skills groups can be very helpful. Social Stories are another way of helping children understand the way we relate to each other in specific situations. With these you choose a situation that is causing difficulties, decide what you want to achieve, describe what normally happens and the consequences and then what should happen and the reinforcer – what good reward will happen if the behaviour alters. These you can write and then share with her as a way of helping her to understand both how to behave and why. You can then point these behaviours out when others do them as well as get her to practice with you. Both of these you can find out about from your SENCo in school or from the National Autistic Society web site: www.autism.org.uk
What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development.
Educational Psychotherapist Qualified Teacher and S.E.N.C.O
Is your child struggling at school? Are they ‘stuck’ in their learning? Behaviour causing concern? Educational Psychotherapy is a specialised educational and therapeutic intervention recommended for children and young people with complex emotional barriers to learning and social development. Phone: 01580 881 271 E-mail: alison@alisonwaterhouse.co.uk www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk
Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •
Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,
•
Failure to learn,
•
Withdrawal,
•
Difficult behaviour,
•
Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,
•
Violence or aggressive outbursts,
•
Physical symptoms,
•
Anxiety,
•
Difficulties with transitions,
•
Restlessness and an inability to focus,
•
An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher.
Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted.
