LOCAL CHILDREN GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO NEVERLAND 27 young people aged 8 - 19 from across East Sussex have been cast in Peter Pan, set to be staged at the White Rock Theatre this Christmas. The recently held auditions were jointly organised by the White Rock Theatre and pantomime producer One From The Heart, who will stage this year’s sensational Christmas show starring veteran of stage and screen Paul Nicholas as Captain Hook. The lucky children from Hastings, St.Leonards, Eastbourne , Winchelsea, and Pebsham were selected as dancers and to play the part of John and Michael in this year’s swashbuckling pirate pantomime adventure! Over 100 young hopefuls took to the stage as the creative team guided them through the audition process. Howard Barnes Theatre Director said “It was great to see so many young people coming to the theatre, keen to have the opportunity to be part of this years’ pantomime, and to work alongside a professional

cast.”Daryl Back, the show’s executive producer led the auditions: “I had a fantastic time at the auditions on Saturday. It was an absolute pleasure to see so many boys auditioning for the roles of John, Michael and the Lost Boys. The standard of the dancers was incredibly high and it was really hard to select the final teams!” Seth Ringrose from St. Leonards said “I am so excited to have been selected to be part of Peter Pan this Christmas. Pantomime is so much fun, I can’t wait to start rehearsals. My mum has been buying tickets for the whole family already!” The lucky children will now work with the show’s professional creative team throughout the autumn in readiness for the pantomime season. Peter Pan opens on Saturday 8 December at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings. Tickets cost from just £13 and are available online from whiterocktheatre.org.uk or by calling the Ticket Office on 01424 462 288

Local Student's Taste of the World of Sports Journalism Cavendish School offer places to any students wishing to work as Ball Crew at the AEGON Eastbourne Tennis Tournament each year, and the successful applicants undergo 6 months of intensive training. One lucky student, Belen Bale aged 14, gives us this excellent report of her experience: It was a rather rushed sort of morning that Miss Mcatamney called. I was just slurping up the last of my cornflakes and was having a last look at my maths revision for the test that day when my Dad poked his head round the door in a state of mild interest- ‘Hey Bel, how would you like to do a journalist experience at the AEGON tennis tournament for a week?’ I barely opened my mouth before my dear mother yelled ‘God Yeah! She’ll absolutely love it!’ in the direction of the

phone as she sprinted out of the door. Question answered, that oh-so-familiar sense of excitement bubbled up inside me as I ran in a state of joy to school. I had made it halfway to the competition when I remembered that I don’t really know anything about tennis. I love Maria Sharpova’s movement on court, Venus Williams’ serve and Roddick’s backhand but I had absolutely no clue of how and why they used them, I

4

felt as dumb and out of place as Mozart at an Iron Maiden concert, but smiling in a mad fashion as I saw my P.E teacher Miss Chignell beckoning at the entrance, I employed my fail safe method of positivity and enthusiasm- ‘Well, Bel, there must be a book on it somewhere!’ And on that slightly naïve note, I walked into one of the most valuable times of my life. The press office is one of the most important places in any tennis tournament, along with the actual court itself. It’s where the players come to rant, rave, and revel in their achievements. And so I sat there, with the cameras flashing and reporters scribbling, as top seed Caroline Wozniacki was giving her very best to try and explain why she had lost in the first round. She had, the day before her first match, given an interview that was brimming with confidence and self belief that, although she hadn’t been playing at her best, she would definitely come up trumps this time. She didn’t. Unlike football, the tennis world is based heavily on ranking. Obvious really, it’s such a solo sport, even with doubles. This is kind of what makes it so addictive to watch. You’ve always got to be equal to your ranking! Not unlike a columnist in a newspaper. The press conferences with the tennis players were some of the most exciting times of the week, bar watching the final and having fish and chips in the canteen. On my first day, I made notes in no

less than 4, and although I didn’t have the courage to ask any questions, I sat there, watching the players, taking in their answers and building up a picture of what it was like in their world. For the top seeds being knocked out so early on, a mixture of confusion and regret played across their tanned faces as they tried their best to remain positive. It must have been so hard to feel that loss while hearing the buzz of people outside, the ‘thwack’ of the balls on the practice courts and the digging questions of the expectant journalists. There was to be no confusion when Andy Roddick swaggered into press. An old legend who had found himself in a blip over the last few months, he had nothing left to lose. With serves over 120 miles per hour, he had no problem in making it to the quarter finals. As I started to adjust to my new surroundings over the next few days, getting used to the crowded, open surroundings and the thwack of tennis balls on courts, I actually started to wish that I could play tennis. I mean, what was there that wasn’t good about the sport? It just looked so much fun, and the way it brings people together like football is just amazing. After seven days of press conferences, interviews, autograph signings, matches with men women and doubles, dysfunctional printers and anxious journalists, the finals day had arrived. It had seemed that all the days before were insignificant

compared to this one Saturday in the tournament, almost as if we were practicing to be ready for it. From the window in the office I could see their faces, and although I knew it wasn’t Wimbledon, and I still couldn’t confidentially say when a ball is out on court, I couldn’t wait to write my report! My experience in the office for the past few days had given me a real taster of the real life of sport journalism, and the hard edge of media that can celebrate life and achievement as well as smash it in seconds. I knew that I was

too soft to really succeed in this sort of career path, but it really brought back my passion for writing and being among those who wrote for a living. To cliché, I felt at home. Even stapling and photocopying. My time at the AEGON was amazing. Making a living in the world of the media coupled with the sheer hard work of managing to organize these large scale events to the smallest detail while still reporting on them is incredible. I really respect journalists for living with that every day. Observing life, at its best and worst, most dramatic and everyday. I totally forgive Miss Mcatamney for not letting me finish my cornflakes on that first day. Nothing would be more worth it.

Pioneering varicose vein surgeons join the Benenden Hospital team Benenden Hospital has expanded its varicose veins service – with the arrival of a new team who are leaders in their field. Mr Eddie Chaloner and Mr Aaron Sweeney joined the Hospital in May. They are leading experts in minimally invasive varicose vein surgery. They were the first surgeons in London and the South East of England to use the revolutionary Endovenous Laser in 2002 and have established a reputation for innovation and excellence in this field. They regularly teach and demonstrate advanced vein surgery techniques under local anaesthetic at national and international surgical conferences and in 2010 were the first surgeons in the UK to use the latest Clarivein technique, which is a virtually painless way of treating varicose veins. The two pioneering consultant vascular surgeons have successfully treated many thousands of patients. What are varicose veins? Varicose veins are bulging and blue veins that occur on the legs. They often appear as people get older and for women they can occur early on as a result of pregnancy. In most cases there will not be any symptoms or complications, but some sufferers may feel they are unsightly. They can make sufferers self conscious and affect the way they would normally dress as well as spoiling their enjoyment of beach holidays, swimming, keeping fit and other activities. Some people may experience pain, especially if they

have been standing for long periods. Those who do suffer serious discomfor t should not leave symptoms untreated as problems can progress to conditions which are then difficult to treat. Mr Aaron Sweeney (left) and Mr Eddie Chaloner (right)

What can be done? Benenden Hospital offers a convenient walk-in walkout treatment with its expert surgeons using advanced laser treatment, sclerotherapy and local anaesthetics to effectively treat varicose veins and the smaller spider veins as a day case patient service. Why choose Benenden Hospital? Varicose vein surgery is now significantly restricted on the NHS. In the majority of areas only patients with the most severe symptoms are allowed to be treated. Benenden Hospital offers rapid access to treatment for private patients, at a very competitive price and to Benenden Healthcare Society members. Treatment will be carried out by highly skilled surgeons and you will be cared for by compassionate nursing staff. You will also have the reassurance of knowing the Hospital’s infection rates are very low and that the customer satisfaction rating is more than 99%.

Choose better looking and healthier legs for less… At Benenden Hospital, you can enjoy the convenience and comfort of a walk-inand-walk-out vein service. Our internationallyrenowned surgeons

use the latest Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and are highly-experienced, having performed more than 5,000 vein treatments.

Childcare

D

eciding on a child care provider for your precious little one can be a complex and daunting task. There are a wide variety of child care providers, large and small and each one will offer something unique. It can take a lot of thought and research to make the right choice for you and your child, it’s well worth booking appointments to visit a few to help you make your mind up. Meeting the staff and getting a “feel” for the setting can often be the best way to decide but what questions should you ask when you visit ? East Sussex County Council have put together a list of questions & considerations to help parents through the process: Experience and quality Are they Ofsted registered? How long have they provided childcare for? Do they have any other experience providing childcare? Have they taken any training? Can they give the names and phone numbers of other parents they work with who could provide a reference? Cost What is the cost for each: Hour: Session: Day: Week: Month: What is included in the fee (for example, food, nappies, wipes) Is there a deposit or registration fee? If so, how much? Travelling to the childcare provision Is there a bus stop nearby? Is there provision for storing buggies? Is there provision for wet weather clothing and footwear? Is there any cycle storage? Is there parking provision either at or in the vicinity of the childcare setting?

Mini Pots of Care Marie Curie Cancer Care is inviting all children aged 3-11 to take part in its Mini Pots of Care fundraising activity this autumn and help raise money for Marie Curie Nurses. Mini Pots of Care is a free creative and educational project for schools and groups which teaches children about science, nature and the work of Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free care to people with a terminal illness in their own homes. As part of the activity children plant daffodil bulbs in their own mini pots in the autumn and care for them throughout winter. Come spring, children celebrate their daffodils in bloom by holding a Mini Pots of Care Day when they paint their pots, fundraise and learn about the work of the charity. Register your school or group to take part by calling 08700 340 040 or visiting

Active Kids After a summer of Olympic fever, sport and exercise has had a pretty high profile this year. The aim of the London Olympics was to "Inspire a generation" and encourage young people to get interested in sporting activity. As well as becoming a hobby, a sport or physical activity also has clear health benefits for children.

Swim with Mr Peter’s Swimming School The ultimate, fast track swim experience for children in Eastbourne Run by Peter Voros (MPhil) - Hungarian Swimming Coach

Different pool venues to suit your child’s needs Parents & babies/Toddlers Small classes for beginners, we do not compromise class sizes for profit

The NHS recommends that youngsters aged between 5 & 18 should have at least one hour's exercise per day. What counts as "exercise" can vary from moderate intensity such as walking or mowing the lawn to vigorous intensity exercises such as gymnastics, dancing, martial arts or playing football. The NHS recommends children take "vigorous" exercise at least 3 times a week and a great way to include this into your child's routine is to get them involved with a club or organised activity. Over the next few pages you'll find details of many local organisations offering fantastic opportunities for children to get active. You can meet many of the organisers at the Sussex Baby & Toddler Show in Eastbourne on the 6th October this year. Among the exhibitors will be the Sovereign Centre, Mr Peters Swimming School, Little Kickers, Underwater Studio, Baby Sensory, and many more.

One of our favourite places to enjoy the great outdoors is Bedgebury Forest at Goudhurst. Easily accessible from the A21, around 18 miles north of Hastings, Bedgebury has a huge amount to offer visiting families. Your starting point for exploring Bedgebury is the large visitor centre, situated beside a lake, offering an excellent cafe, toilets, and even shower facilities. From the visitor centre, you can take a broad, well surfaced path around the Pinetum which houses a huge collection of conifer trees from around the world. Separate to the Pinetum is Bedgebury Forest, home to several excellent adventure play areas for children, as well as a network of family trails suitable for exploring the forest either by bike or on foot. A walk in the forest is rewarding all year round, changing with the seasons. In Autumn, not only can you enjoy the spectacle of the green leaves turning every shade of red and gold, but also keep an eye out for unusual and colourful fungi growing through the leaves on the forest floor. For cyclists, the family trails are suitable for all riders, offering wide, well surfaced trails to explore the forest. If, like me, you prefer a more challenging offroad ride, there is also a 13km "red" route for mountain bikers. The surface of the red route can be rough and muddy in places, but there are no large or unavoidable obstacles. This makes Bedgebury an ideal venue for riders new to off-road riding to give it a try. We have a budding mountain biker who has been riding some sections of the Red Route since she was 6, gradually developing skills and confidence each time. Bikes can be hired (and repaired) on-site at Quench Cycles, situated next to the visitor centre. If you bring your own bikes and a picnic, the only charge for everything on offer here is the £8.50 it costs to park, making a trip to Bedgebury great value for money. We've managed to entertain a small crowd of under 10's for a whole day just wandering from one adventure play area to the next. A fantastic day out, highly recommended by the Family Buzz team. www.forestry.gov.uk/bedgebury

N E E W O HALL S N I K P PUM W

ith Halloween on the way, we thought we'd give our readers some tips on how to make an extra-spooky pumpkin lantern! You'll need: A Pumpkin (Obviously) A Sharp Knife An ice cream scoop or a spoon Some spooky creativity First, take a good look at your pumpkin and identify a nice, even section for the face. It's best to do this before any of the other steps so you'll have an idea where the "back" and "front" of your lantern will be. Next you need to hollow out your pumpkin, take a sharp knife and cut the topsection out of your pumpkin. This will be the lid of the pumpkin, so it's worth making this cut with the knife at a 45 degree angle. This will give the lid a ledge to sit on. You can either cut a plain circle or make a more elaborate cut, it's up to you but make sure the opening is large enough to comfortably get your hands in. Once the lid is removed, set it to one side safely. Inside the pumpkin you'll find loads of stringy, slippery goop and seeds and things. Scoop all of this out with a spoon or ice cream scoop. At this point you might want to scrape some of the flesh of the pumpkin out from the back of the area where you're going to carve the face. Making this area slightly thinner will make carving the face easier. Don't make it too thin though or the pumpkin might collapse. Lastly comes the most fun but also the most fiddly part, the face. You can let your imagination run wild with this part creating as scary a face as you can, on this page you'll find a few pictures for inspiration. If you're feeling adventurous you can even try to carve a spooky shape or your favourite cartoon character such as the bat or the Hello Kitty design below. Once your pumpkin lantern is carved, pop a couple of tea-light candles inside and enjoy! If you're worried about using a naked flame in your lantern, you can also use glow-sticks (available at most supermarkets) to give off an eerie light. If you've carved a scary pumpkin this year, take a photo and email it to jason@familybuzz.co.uk. We'll post any sent in on our facebook page on the 31st of October!

After hearing great reports from friends, we took a family trip to Blackstock Farm on a sunny day this August. Our first impressions were great, entering through an immaculately presented and well stocked farm shop. I could have happily browsed a while there but the kids were eager to get into the farm. They were soon making friends with the donkeys, and adoring the baby chicks and chinchillas. After meeting the animals we moved on to the large play area where we were able to sit and relax while they enjoyed the trampolines, zip wires, bouncy castles, and swings. There is also an indoor soft play area in case the weather isn't being kind. Eventually the children were persuaded to take a break for a tractor ride which took us past lakes and fields where we spotted heavy horses, alpacas, llamas, rheas, and took in the glorious views. Afterwards we went to re-visit the donkeys and the children were shown how to brush the animal's fur which they absolutely loved doing. After a busy morning, we were peckish so we sampled the excellent and reasonably priced food at the Cafe. As well as gastro-pub standard Scenic view s food, the cafe also has gorgeous views across the farm making it the perfect spot to linger for a while. After lunch we explored the rest of the farm and finished up with the kids having a blast on the pedal cars. We took the kids home happy and tired, which is pretty much the ideal way to end a family day out. This October half-term, Blackstock are hosting a Halloween event where children will be able to enjoy themed craft activities and take a spooky tractor ride, this is sure to be a fantastic event, so take a look at their website or facebook page for more details! www.blackstockfarm.co.uk

Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison, My son has struggled at school for many years, he is very disorganised and finds concentrating difficult. He struggles with writing and hates PE. He is in Year 5 and really finds school difficult, not wanting to go. Recently a friend of mine watched a programme on television about Dyspraxia. I spoke to his class teacher and the SENCo in school and they said I needed to go to my GP. Why can’t school do anything about this? Thank you for your letter. Your school have suggested going to your GP because Dyspraxia is a medical condition and so therefore can only be diagnosed by a medical practitioner. Your GP will talk to you about this and will then refer you onto either Paediatrics who work as a specialist team with children or the Occupational Therapy Team. Your Paediatric team will often be made up of Speech and Language therapists and Occupational Therapists as well as specialist Doctors and will be able to assess his full needs as well as take a history of his development and difficulties. The Occupational Therapists team can also assess for Dyspraxia and if diagnosed will be the team to support him either with direct work or with a programme for you and staff in school to follow. Dyspraxia is a neurological disorder that begins in childhood and affects children’s movements and co-ordination as a result of brain messages not being accurately transmitted to the body. Various areas of development can be affected by developmental dyspraxia. These can include difficulties with fine motor co-ordination which lead to problems with handwriting including speed, hand aching while writing and

28

establishing a correct pencil grip. Other areas that can be affected are difficulties with whole body movement and coordination and memory. Issues with whole body movement and coordination mean that major developmental targets including walking, running, climbing and jumping can be affected. The difficulties vary from child to child and may include: poor timing, poor balance (sometimes even falling over in midstep), difficulty combining movements into a controlled sequence, difficulty remembering the next movement in a sequence or problems with spatial awareness. Memory difficulties often show with difficulty in remembering instructions, difficulty organising one's time and remembering deadlines, increased likelihood of losing things or problems carrying out tasks which require remembering several steps in sequence. Whilst most of us experience these problems to some extent, they have a much more significant impact on the lives of dyspraxic children and young people. There are many things that school can do to support children with Dyspraxia including h a n dw r i t i n g programmes specifically designed for dyspraxic children, movement and co-ordination programmes including Motricity and Jump Ahead, strategies for suppor ting memory difficulties and alternate ways of recording information. So please don’t worry if your son is diagnosed. I would strongly urge you go and talk to the SENCo in school, they are the specialist teacher for ensuring the special needs of children are met. They

will explain how school can support your child and ways that you can do this at home so that you both work in partnership to help your son. Dear Alison, My husband and I adopted our beautiful daughter when she was 3 years old. She is now in Year 3 at school and will be moving into her Year 4 class in September. She struggles with transitions and building relationships with new adults and children. This year her school have mixed up the children from the different classes and over the summer this has been causing her some difficulties. She has an attachment disorder and although the school are aware of this they do not seem to understand the implications for this and are not willing to put in support to help her through this time. What can we do to help them understand how transitions and relationships impact on her achievement at school and her wellbeing? Thank you for your letter, I have chosen your letter to answer as this is a theme that has been very strong in the work I do with children and parents and I have received several letters asking about this. Difficulties associated with attachment and attachment disorders are far more understood and diagnosed today than in the past, however the implications for children’s learning and wellbeing is still relatively new in many schools. I would suggest a great book, which I give to all schools I have contact with: Dr Heather Geddes ‘Attachment in the Classroom’ as a starting point. I would also suggest that you spend some time with the SENCo and Head of your daughter’s school to discuss your concerns

and the implications for learning of your daughter’s diagnosis. They may like to contact a professional who can undertake some training with staff within school to help Teachers and Teaching Assistants understand how it impacts on learning, resilience and relationships. Young Minds runs training for schools on Attachment and Neuroscience and has a very good web site for teachers on wellbeing including ways of supporting transitions both within schools and across schools. The East Sussex Virtual School for Looked After Children also does training for schools as well as many of the Adoptions organisations. Preparing your daughter for the term ahead and the changes she will experience are all things that you can do as a family before September. Talking about the new class and how it may work, what to do if she is unsure or doesn’t understand something, helping her to understand that other children will be nervous about new friends and how she can engage them both in the class and in the playground, reminders of how good she is at tasks and the things she has already achieved will all be important and will build the foundations for the year ahead. You might also like to start a scrap book with her ‘Look what I can do now’ as a way of celebrating what she has achieved over the past and allowing her to see that she builds on her learning and achievements over time. Books to share can also be a good way of helping children understand about change and transitions. I have used ‘The tin Forest’ by Helen Ward and ‘Oh the places you’ll go’ by Dr Seuss as ways of supporting children with change and moving on.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions, • Restlessness and an inability to focus, • An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. For more information, contact Alison on: 01580 881 271 or alison@alisonwaterhouse.co.uk
