Registered Charity Number: 256789

On Sunday 12th October, cyclists will take to the roads of East Sussex for Chestnut Tree House's first cycling event, the Chestnut Sussex 100. Starting at Bentley Wildfowl in Halland, cyclists can choose between a 60km or 100km distance, raising vital funds along the way for children and families supported by Chestnut Tree House. The choice of two routes makes this the perfect event for seasoned cyclists and first-timers alike, with the 100km route including one of the UK's top 100 climbs, 'Kidd's Hill'. The charity is currently caring for 300 children with life-shortening conditions across Sussex. It costs £3 million each year to provide all care services, both at the house and in the community and the hospice receives less than 8% from central government, so it relies heavily on the generosity, help and support of the local community. So, whether you are an experienced cyclist or relatively new to the pedals and looking to challenge yourself, why not get your spokes spinning and help raise vital funds for Chestnut Tree House. Find out more and register at chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/sussex100

Motcombe Pool offers a small friendly Playgroup, based in the heart of the community, in Old Town Eastbourne. The Playgroup is open Monday to Friday from 9:152:15, costs £23.25 per day, and takes a maximum of 10 preschool children from ages 2-5. The small group size means the NVQ qualified staff are able to focus their attention on each child’s individual learning, helping them to develop at their own pace. Children will learn, following the early years foundation stage. The principals of this ensures children are treated as unique, that they learn to build positive relationships, that the environment enables them to learn and that they are supported to learn through different ways and at different rates. Motcombe Playgroup benefits from being able to offer swim sessions 3 days a week in Motcombe Pool. Swim days are held on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work. We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself. Liven up those dull, rainy days in style with Holly & Beau’s award-winning NEW raincoat! Ideal for encouraging children to get active outdoors in wet weather, the Holly & Beau raincoat offers unique, colourchanging abilities. Upon contact with water, Holly & Beau’s cute and quirky motifs explode into a rainbow of colours, creating a spectacular display that will fascinate curious little minds. As it dries, the coat magically returns to its original design, to repeat over and over again. Putting the ‘fun’ back into functionality, Holly & Beau’s raincoats provide great quality and superb all-round protection from the elements. With a super-soft, warm, fleecy lining, waterproof pongee and PU coated outer, a large hood, adjustable cuffs, front zipper with poppers - for that extra ‘snug’ factor – and handy pockets for stashing gloves & other treasures, this raincoat is sure to get the most fair-weathered child excited about the rain! Holly & Beau raincoats start at £49.99 with sizes ranging from 3 to 12 years of age. Find the raincoat and other magical designs at www.hollyandbeau.com

Louie Spence will cast a magic spell over Hastings in Aladdin this Christmas The White Rock Theatre in Hastings has announced that Dancing on Ice Judge, dancer and West End theatre sensation Louie Spence will star as "Slave Of The Ring" in this year’s magical family pantomime, Aladdin. A long-time actor and dancer, Louie became a household name when he appeared on Sky1's smash-hit series Pineapple Dance Studios. One of the most flamboyant characters ever to grace a documentary series, he won an army of fans, spring-boarding his own series Louie Spence's Showbusiness, which captivated audiences nationwide. Daryl Back, Executive Producer of Louie Spence Aladdin, who produced last year’s critically acclaimed performance of Dick Whittington at The White Rock Theatre, said “We couldn’t wish for a more talented Genie for our pantomime in Hastings this Christmas. Louie is known to the nation not just as a sensational dancer but his unique performance style will also add some fantastic comedy to our family Ben Watson show.” There is more good news for Sussex audiences as the Theatre announces the return of comedy front-

12

man Ben Watson to their Christmas show. Ben will play Wishee Washee in this year’s family-friendly production of Aladdin. Ben has become a familiar face on the Hastings pantomime stage, last year playing Simple Simon in Dick Whittington, sharing the stage with Benidorm star Sheila Reid, and Christmas 2012 saw him play Smee in Peter Pan – sidekick to Paul Nicholas’ Captain Hook. The show’s Executive Producer Daryl Back explains “Ben has become very much part of the pantomime in Hastings, with audiences loving his cheeky humour and boundless energy. Having received so many requests from audience members for his return, we were absolutely delighted when Ben agreed to join us for a third season”. Tickets for Aladdin, which runs from Friday 12 December 2014 to Sunday 28 December 2014, are available from whiterocktheatre.org.uk

If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison, Both my husband and I have been really worried about our daughter’s literacy for some time. We have both got dyslexia. After constant meetings with her class teacher her school finally undertook a dyslexia test with her. The results are a ‘At risk of Dyslexia’ diagnosis. We don’t understand what this means. Does she have dyslexia or not? If schools are concerned about children having dyslexia then they are able to assess them using the Dyslexia Screening Test or DST. It provides a profile of strengths and weaknesses which help teachers support the child. This test looks at a range of different areas including phonological awareness, working memory, word finding, rhyme, processing, blending and segmenting and decoding skills. It identifies those children ‘at risk’ of reading failure so that they can be given extra support to prevent this. The purpose of the screening test is to identify children who need support and identify what support they need. The definition of dyslexia is ‘A learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.’ (Taken from Sir Jim Rose’s report 2009.) A good indication of the severity of dyslexic difficulties is gained by looking at how the child has responded to interventions. The DST allows a school to identify weak areas and then support them. Hence the at risk label. It then enables the teaching professionals to look at how your daughter has responded to support over a period of time which then adds to the assessment process. It will be really beneficial for your daughter if you can support the work that school undertakes with her. Your school SENCo will help you understand what school is doing and how you can support. The British Dyslexia Association web site is also a really good place for advice, resources and ways of supporting children with dyslexia. Dear Alison, Our son is in Year 3 at primary school. He is a happy fun loving boy who enjoys most of his time at school. He is, and has always been, very clumsy. He has always bumped into things or tripped

14

over things. He was late to crawl and walk and has really struggled learning to ride his bike. His handwriting is really poor and this is now upsetting him. His SENCo at school has told us that she believes he has dyspraxia and that he will be able to take part in Jump Ahead. We would really like to help him but don’t know what to do. Dyspraxia is an impairment of the organisation of movement. It makes it difficult for individuals to plan and or complete fine motor tasks as simple as waving goodbye or as complex as brushing teeth. It does not affect intelligence. Other associated difficulties can be linked with it including problems with language, perception and thought. Dyspraxia is caused by the way the brain processes information and how these messages are transmitted. Research suggests that up to 6% of the population is affected by this condition. Males are more likely to be affected than females and the condition often runs in families. It is great that this has been identified by school as sometimes if the condition is not found it can cause increasing frustration for children which then impacts on school life. Jump Ahead is a support program that schools use to strengthen a range of skills. These include: body awareness, balance, visual tracking, fine motor skills, motor planning skills, eye hand co-ordination, and sensory perception. It is fun and highly structured and most children enjoy the activities and the small group work. It tends to be used for about 30 minutes each session with 3 sessions each week. If you talk to the SENCo she will share the program with you and then you will be able to support the weekly activities at home with your son. These might include pencil skills such as dot to dot or maize’s, threading or lacing cards, throwing and catching activities and balancing activities like musical statues or walking along a line. Dear Alison, Our daughter started in Reception last September. She seemed to settle in quickly and we had no difficulties getting her to school. Just before Christmas we had a meeting with the class teacher who told us our daughter wasn’t talking at school. We were a bit shocked that it took

them so long to talk to us and also that this was how she was behaving. She had attended our local nursery and although shy and quiet had spoken to adults and interacted well with other children. The school then monitored this until Easter when we had another meeting. They stated at the meeting that her behaviour hadn’t changed, however they said there was nothing they could do. Why is she behaving in this way and what should we do to help her? Thank you for your email. Selective mutism is a very interesting behaviour in children and one that is quite common in early year’s classes. It is an anxiety disorder that stops children from speaking in certain situations. The children can however speak normally to close family or friends when nobody is listening. It is really important to understand that your daughter is not choosing not to speak she just is not able to, she is frozen. Most children will work their way through this with sympathetic support, although they may be reserved or shy in social situations where they feel anxious. It is not clear as to what causes selective mutism however it is thought to be linked to anxiety. In other cases some children can have trouble processing sensory information such as loud noises and the pushing and contact that comes with crowds. These children have Sensory Processing Difficulties and can shut down as a way of managing these, which results in not speaking. Children can be supported and helped in a variety of ways in school. The best person to speak to is your schools SENCo who can tell you how school can support your daughter. The use of a key adult and speech and language sessions focused around play and interaction with a close friend can be extremely positive. It is a way of helping to lessen the anxiety and develop a positive relationship which can then be experienced within the classroom as well as within the sessions. If you or school are still concerned after this kind of support is put in place then the school can make a referral to the Speech and Language Therapy Team or you can talk to your GP who can also make this referral.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions,

EASTBOURNE AREA EPILEPSY GROUP Have You Or Someone Close To You Been Diagnosed With Epilepsy? In the Sussex area EAEG acts as a support group for people with epilepsy, and their families and friends. Our aim is to support, inform, educate, and raise awareness of this misunderstood condition. Epilepsy can happen to anyone and 1 in 100 people in UK has epilepsy. It can start at any age, but tends to be more common in older adults, and in children and teenagers. We attend many events with information and to raise awareness, and will give talks to any groups, businesses, schools etc, who feels it would be useful. Seeing someone have a seizure can be frightening to some, but it is useful and not difficult to know what to do. The Adult group have meetings on the 3rd Monday evening of the month at the Afton Hotel, Eastbourne (except July, August and December) with various speakers. The group also has various social events. The Youth group meet on the 2nd Saturday morning 10.30-12.30 at Community Wise, Ocklynge Road, Old Town, Eastbourne. Andy Evans (chair) formed the group in 2005 and has won two awards for his work in Epilepsy and Disability, the National Young Epilepsy Champions Award and the Eastbourne Herald Achievers Award Supporting those with disabilities. Free swimming for Hastings youngsters at Freedom Leisure Children under eight have a unique opportunity to swim for free for a year as many times as they like at Summerfields Leisure Centre in a new initiative from Freedom Leisure, which operates the facility in partnership with Hastings Borough Council. The free swimming programme started on July 1, 2014 and will run until June 30, 2015. Summerfields Leisure Centre has been chosen to pilot the scheme for the year: if successful, other Freedom Leisure centres will take on the programme in 2015.

the year if they swim once a week and £126.80 if they swim twice a week. “We are delighted to throw open the doors and welcome local youngsters to swim at Summerfields Leisure Centre for free,” says Freedom Leisure Centre Manager Matt James. “Swimming is a great form of exercise and is an excellent activity for families with children of different ages and abilities as everyone can enjoy the water together.”

Members and non-members are eligible to register thus enabling all families with young children to enjoy the benefit. Parents simply need to register their children once and then they can swim for free at all public swimming times, as often as they wish. The only stipulation is that, in order to meet health and safety regulations, one full-paying adult per one or two children also swims.

“We constantly hear that children are not active enough so we hope that the free swim scheme will enable Hastings kids to swim regularly without their parents having to worry about the cost,” says Cllr Dawn Poole, lead member for Leisure and Amenities at Hastings Borough Council. “Our aim is to encourage youngsters to make a healthy habit of swimming several times a week. This will help to boost their activity levels and fitness while they have fun,” she says.

Currently an under-5s swim costs £1.25 and a 5-8s swim costs £2.60. Based on a family swim price of £9.10, a family of four could save £63.40 over

Men get your pants on – Y Front Run is back! After a fantastic first event last September, the Y Front Run is back in Hastings Alexandra Park on Sunday 28th September – to help raise awareness of male cancer. This year the organisers, Jo & Hollie are also supporting Balls to Cancer and St Michael’s Hospice alongside CRUK. Last year over 100 guys ran around the park in their pants and raised over £4,000 for charity. This year we want to treble the number of men taking part and the amount raised for the three chosen charities. Registration is easy – simply email the team at: y-front-run-hastings@hotmail.co.uk and they will send you the relevant form or alternatively visit: www. yfrontrun.co.uk and you can download the form to complete. The Y Front Run 2014 Tour has had an amazing year, starting off in Crawley, then onto Tunbridge Wells, into Ashford, followed by Eastbourne, ending in Hastings. Help by making this an annual event in these towns and kick male cancer in the balls!

We run football and rugby classes for girls and boys aged 18 months to 7 years all over the country and the world. Our classes, that are conducted by qualified FA coaches, teach the children invaluable life skills such as listening, sharing, taking turns and teamwork. Much emphasis is put on simple learning concepts such as colours and numbers and helping the children concentrate on basic balance, agility and coordination.

Our youngest was turning 8 this summer and wanted a party she could invite lots of friends to. We decided we'd like to take the children somewhere they'd have lots to do, somewhere the activities and fun were laid on for us and we could just watch the party-goers enjoy their day. Though there are lots of great days out locally, we settled on Knockhatch Adventure Park, just outside of Eastbourne. Though, in theory, this was a summer party, we are still at the mercy of the British climate, so the fact that Knockhatch has excellent indoor play facilities was a big plus point. We were fortunate to have a warm, dry day for the party, so the kids were able to take advantage of all the fantastic outdoor fun as well. Knockhatch is home to a wide range of farmyard and exotic animals and the children enjoyed looking at these. They had hours of fun on the trampolines and adventure play area. The Wave Runner water slide (pictured bottom right) and Demon Drop Slide were popular with the braver boys and girls! A change of clothes is a great idea for a visit here as there are lots of opportunities for the youngsters to get wet and muddy while they're having fun. Once the gang had all had a blast wearing themselves out around the grounds, we headed to the "Froggies" barn for our party meals and cake. As well as housing the cafe and our party room, the barn has a very large soft play area (As pictured on the right) which the children still managed to find more energy to enjoy before eating. The Knockhatch party package includes a hot meal & take away party bag for each child, entry into the park and use of one of the Knockhatch Party rooms from either 10am to 1pm or 2pm to 5pm. Once you're in the park, there are a few attractions which cost extra (like Laser adventures, quad bikes and rock climbing) but there are more than enough activities included in your entry price to keep the most energetic kids busy for a whole day. Party prices at Knockhatch start from just £8.99 per child (min 8 children) and we felt it was a great day out for everyone and excellent value for money. To plan your party or day out at Knockhatch, you can call them on 01323 442 051 or visit them online at www.knockhatch.com

DRESS THE MUMMY You'll need a lot of toilet paper or kitchen towel for this one... Split the kids into two teams and pick two "mummies" The teams have to wrap the mummy in loo roll, first team to finish wins a prize!

BOBBING DOUGHNUTS

Don't fancy everyone getting soaked bobbing for apples in a bucket of water ? As an alternative, place a doughnut for each child on a piece of string. The kids have to eat the doughnuts without using their hands. First to finish is the winner!

PASS THE PUMPKIN A spooky twist on "pass the parcel". Fill a hollowed out pumpkin wtih sweets & goodies, sit the kids in a circle and put some music on. The children pass the pumpkin and whoever has it when the music stops gets to grab some sweets!

These are just a few suggestions from us to help you plan a halloween spook-tacular! Whatever you and your little horrors get up to this halloween, we hope you have a fang-tastic time!
