ell we don't know about you, but that winter felt like it went on forever to us here at the Family Buzz! Glad to see some daffodils and tulips at last, letting us all know that spring is here and we can pack away those woolly hats, coats, scarves, and mittens for a while. As ever, the onset of spring sees the county come alive with dozens of things to do for Mothers Day and Easter before the summer kicks off in earnest with the Mayday celebrations. Don't forget Red Nose day on 15th March too! In this issue, you'll find the usual mix of fantastic days out, useful information and general inspiration for getting out and having some family fun. We hope you enjoy the magazine - Jason & Debby

Day @ the Park Sat 30th March Put a spring in your step this Easter Saturday as Alexandra Park comes alive for the fourth year in a row with its Spring extravaganza. All the familiar attractions will be there: funfair, bandstand music, displays, craft market, pop-up cafes, baking competitions, childrens activities and silly games, with some interesting new additions as well: a short story competition, Easter trail, and the brand new Face Your Fears roadshow courtesy of the Blue Reef Aquarium! Organiser Louise Kelleher is very excited: ‘We really look forward to these events and the spring one will be our biggest yet. We have all sorts of events that should keep the whole family entertained for the whole day, and we can’t wait to say goodbye to the winter gloom and say hello spring!’ And as it’s Easter Saturday, do eggspect some Easter madness too!

Eat @ - family friendly dining for all

Eat @ cafes are proud to announce a local charity partnership that will provide an even warmer, wider welcome to families in the area. Playsense, a local charity that advises on accessibility to families with children with disabilities, has kindly provided a series of adapted sets of cutlery, plates and cups so that everyone can dine in style and comfort at Eat @ branches. Eat @ director Stephen Kelleher is delighted: “We were approached by Playsense, many of whose members already use our cafes, and who were complimentary about the level of accessibility and choice we already offered. Due to some heroic fundraising by one little boy, they were keen that we would be the first to hold equipment that would help children and adults with disabilities to eat more independently and comfortably. We were extremely flattered and very enthusiastic right from the start, and we had a great party over Christmas to say thank you”. Eat @ is also providing improvements to other facilities at its branches, including upgrades to the toilet facilities and general décor at the park café, an increased choice for people with special diets, and new menus and specials at both branches.

Along with eat @’s outdoor events and in-house activities, there really is something for everyone at eat @ branches this year!

How to teach your child to read To teach your child to read and support them as they develop their reading skills at school is an incredibly rewarding and challenging task for any parent. The more you understand about how reading skills are gained, the more you can help and encourage your emerging book worm. Each child learns to read at a different rate, even within the same family and it is really important to bear that in mind, especially when your child starts school. Allow your child to develop at their own pace and try not to compare them against other children; pushing a child to read before they are ready can completely put them off. Before your child learns to read, they need to know WHY they would want to learn this skill – your job is to actively demonstrate the value of being able to read on a daily basis. For example: • The tv menu, how do you know when your programme is on? Help your child use it to find the shows they want to watch. • Reading books – express the enjoyment you get from reading your own books (or get an older sibling to do this). Make a point of letting your child see you look forward to settling down with your book at the end of the day. • Text messages, share them with your child, let them see how we communicate with the ones we love through instant words – let them type and send some words for themselves. As your child begins to master their letters, you need to understand the processes that will take them from single letters to whole words and stories. If you have a school aged child, the term ‘phonics’ is bound to crop up, as it is the main method used to teach reading in British schools, but even before this stage, it is worth understanding how reading is taught and the different methods which can be used. Not all children learn in the same way and although phonics is a vital aspect of teaching reading skills, you will help your child further by being able to employ a variety of means to nurture their own specific learning style. There are three main methods for teaching children to read and there is some overlap between them: Phonics is the key to understanding how the English language is written down. Graphemes are the written letters which make phonemes, the sounds of English speech. With the phonics method, children learn which letters make what sounds, for example: “ea” makes two distinct sounds as in spread and bead, and adding

the letter “e” to the end of many words affects how the middle vowel sounds. Phonics is a technical method and works well for many children, especially helping them to decode longer words. Look – Say encourages the child to learn each word as a whole through repetition. This was particularly prevalent in the popular Peter and Jane reading books and is still used for ‘tricky’ words which do not conform to the standard phonic rules. Whole Language immerses children in a wide variety of literature, writing, songs, verbal storytelling and learning to write. Words are not broken down but texts are read through a blend of Look-Say and working out through context. As the mother of three daughters, I have employed all three methods in varying degrees depending on the child and their particular learning style and through understanding how the different methods work, I have been a more understanding and better equipped teacher to them.

We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work. We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself.

5 Minutes with... Liz Jeffries

We spoke to Liz about the Alexander Technique and how it may benefit pregnant women and mums with their posture and mum's activities. Family Buzz - What is the Alexander Technique? Liz Jeffries - It is an educational method that looks at everyday movement habits, and how you can change them for the better. Family Buzz - How is the technique taught? Liz Jeffries - By one to one lessons or group sessions, both are very effective. Family Buzz - How long are the lessons and how many will I need? Liz Jeffries - A lesson lasts 30-45 minutes. The number of lessons depends upon the individual. I would assess this through observation and talking about your issues. Family Buzz - What happens in a lesson? Liz Jeffries - I observe posture and movement. I gently place my hands on your neck, shoulders and back. I also check your breathing and movement whilst you are walking, standing and sitting. You don’t have to remove your clothes. There is no manipulation. Family Buzz - Who can benefit from learning the Alexander Technique? Liz Jeffries - People of all ages, professions and lifestyles can improve their quality of life, whether they are experiencing pain or wanting to enjoy life more. Family Buzz - Why do Alexander Technique lessons help? Liz Jeffries - AT releases unnecessary muscular

tension, of which you may be unaware. These tensions can affect breathing and posture. Family Buzz - Where can I have AT lessons and how much does it cost? Liz Jeffries - There are group sessions, walking sessions, one to one lessons, plus a special Mums & Bumps Session. Hastings/St Leonards, Bexhill, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells have various sessions available. Prices start at £25 per person. (lower for group sessions) The Mums & Bumps Sessions are in Hastings and cost only £5.00 per person, plus an initial £5 membership fee.

WHERE'S THE

PARTY?

Organising a party for your offspring can be stressful. Ensuring the happiness of half a dozen (Or more!) little fun-hungry, hyper-active bundles of mischief is no mean feat, so The Family Buzz is here to help! Our tips for organising a great party are:

1. Well in advance, plan the party with the birthday boy or girl. Decide who they'd like to invite (Bearing in mind younger ones may change best friends 3 times a week) and what theme they'd like to have for the party. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. 2. When the who what where and how is sorted, get invites out as quickly as you can, children have very busy social lives these days and the sooner you get the date booked in their diaries the better.

3. Food. Sit down and think about what sort of food you're going to serve and write out a shopping list. If you're going to cook yourself, work out if anything can be cooked in advance and frozen to save time nearer to the event. If you enjoy baking with your child, making a few last minute treats can be a great way to occupy them the morning before the party.

4. The night before make sure cameras and camcorders are charged up and you've got plenty of space on those memory cards to capture every memory! For more inspiration, over the next 3 pages you'll find details of various local businesses offering party ideas, places to play and places to buy presents. Good luck!

Hosting a Foreign Student Children and young people who have the opportunity to travel abroad perceive it as an exciting opportunity to broaden and enrich their lives. In Hastings we see more than 30 000 language students visiting the town, with the majority of those home stays. We believe the language student business contributes around £35m to the local economy. There are many language schools in Hastings and together with Sussex Police we work in partnership as members of HOSAC (Hastings Overseas Students Advisory Council) to safeguard all students that come to our town.

In conjunction with HOSAC, Sussex Police run ‘Operation Columbus’ throughout the year. We hold fortnightly meetings during the peak summer months to discuss ways in which we can make sure every student feels safe and welcome in Hastings, with more strategic planning and debrief meetings at the start and end of the main season. Most students stay with host families and the role of the ‘host’ has become more crucial to their

student visitor. Many families ‘host’ to broaden their experience and provide opportunities for their children; others do it for financial benefit. Hosting often leads to lifelong friendships. Here are some key tips should you wish to become a host family: •Encourage your student to speak English as much as possible in your home (especially if they are studying a language course). •Encourage your student to feel at home and treat him/her as a member of the family rather than just a lodger. •Try not to host more than one young person of the same native language unless by special agreement with the language school organisation. •Provide an environment in which it is possible for the student to carry on his/her studies. •Respect the student’s different cultural background and be sensitive to their needs. •Provide the student with a well balanced and appropriate diet taking into consideration any special requirements. •Maintain a close liaison with the language school and therefore be in a position to help resolve any problems that the student has during their stay. •Hold a Gas Safety certificate for your home. For more information on HOSAC please contact the HOSAC Liaison Officer – dclifford@hastings.gov.uk

Hosting Foreign Students EF’s mission is to break down barriers in language, culture and geography and help people become citizens of the world. For nearly 50 years EF has welcomed students from all over the world to the UK to stay with local Hosts. Anyone can apply to host students – young, old, single or a couple, with or without children. Exposure to the culture of others is a valuable education for us. The most obvious way to get this exposure is to travel, however sometimes budget simply won’t allow it. Hosting international students can be a great alternative to enrich your life and they are fantastic company! Deciding to host students can also be a useful way to supplement income and help make ends meet. A six week stint in the summer can make a tidy contribution towards a holiday or home improvements. Students are swept up in a whirlwind of English lessons, sports, day trips and local activities from start to finish but are always keen to practice their new found lingo when they come home for their evening meal. Practical planning is straight forward enough – procure some second hand bunk beds, bulk buy the pasta and have an open mind! Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison, I have a daughter who is in Year 6 at Primary school. She was very close to my Mum and last year my Mum died after a long fight with cancer. As you can imagine Christmas was very hard. My daughter misses her Grandmother very much and is often in tears and upset. When I ask her what is the problem she just shouts and yells telling me I know what it is and I can’t help her. I am dreading her going back to school as at the end of last term her class teacher asked to see me and told me that my daughters work has slipped and that she was very concerned. It is always really difficult when we lose someone close to us and this wound takes a while to heal. The whole grief experience is not one that goes quickly and as I am sure you are aware is made up of several very strong emotions; disbelief, denial, anger, remorse, depression and finally acceptance. For you and your daughter it is very hard as you are both grieving and will experience different emotions at different times. The most important thing is to talk to her about the emotions and stages you are going through, help her understand that today is a bad day because… but that tomorrow will be different. That the emotions she feels are like the waves of the sea they ebb and flow but do not last forever. Talk about the memories you have and how much you miss your mum. Also talk about the good things you remember and the things she would say and don’t worry if she sees you cry. She will watch you and know that it is bearable and that the tears do end. A really good book for you to share is ‘Badgers passing gifts’ by Susan Varley. This is a book that looks back and celebrates the gifts badger has given all his friends. It is a lovely book to share and will cause you to talk about your own memories of your Mum. Another thing for you both to do is to create a memory box. Spend time decorating a box and then put inside the things that are important to you both in connection with your Mum. This might be pictures, objects that were hers or gifts that she bought you both. The objects link to a memory or occasion

28

that you shared with her or altogether. This can be a lovely activity to share and do together. As to school the first thing is to talk to your daughter’s class teacher and explain what is going on and how difficult your daughter is finding things. Some schools have access to school counsellors or mentors who would be able to support your daughter if you felt this might help. Your daughter’s class teacher can just keep an eye on her and give her a little extra support over the next few months while she is experiencing this sense of loss. Dear Alison, I am writing as my husband and I recently separated and our eldest son who is in Year 8 has really struggled with what is happening. He used to be a very gentle calm boy but now he always seems angry is quick to lose his temper and doesn’t seem to care about school or his work anymore. Last term he got into trouble quite a lot and this has never happened before. I have had several meetings with his Form Tutor who has told me that his work is really suffering. I can’t share this with his Dad as he will just get really angry and that will make things worse. It is very difficult for all members of a family when parents have to separate. It will take time for your son to manage this so first of all you will need to be patient. When parents separate children experience great loss and therefore have to go through the grief cycle. This cycle is made up of several very strong emotions and anger is one of them. Your son will be angry at both of you and will take out his anger on the person he feels is strong enough to cope with it. He will need to test out that the parent he is living with won’t walk away and leave him as well. This will take time to experience and feel safe with. I am sure that school and his work at school are the last thing that he wants to think about or even cares about at the moment, it can be a really good focus however for some young people and by concentrating on school work they can experience an ‘emotional break’ from all the other worries and thoughts. Try and help him focus on the subjects that he likes and

enjoys. Giving your son the time is going to be really important, not necessarily to talk, unless he wants to, but just doing things together, car washing, cooking, wii, bike riding or skating whatever he and you can enjoy together. Create some good memories together and remind one another how to laugh. Talk to his school and share your worries with them. They may have Learning Mentors or other support workers they can use to help your son. Staff need to be aware of what he is going through so that they can help him manage the stresses and pressures of school with everything else. Young people take time to process all the emotions and thoughts that these situations bring however they are able to with support and help and in so doing experience their own strength and resilience. Dear Alison I really don’t know how to deal with a situation at my son’s school. My son is in Year 1 and is struggling to manage. Each day when I go to pick him up I dread it. I stand in the playground waiting hoping that he is the first out and that I can avoid his class teacher. I know all the other parents are talking about me and how bad my son is at school. His class teacher always seems to want to see me and calls me into the class in front of everyone. Then she proceeds to tell me all the things he has done and the children he has upset or hurt. I know she thinks I am a bad mother and can’t control my son. I’m getting to the point where I try to get my friend to pick him up so that I can avoid having to see everyone. I know he is no angel but I just don’t know what to do. You are obviously having a very difficult time at the moment. Having worked with many parents whose children struggle at school for a variety of reasons I am aware of how difficult the school playground can be and how they feel that everyone is judging them. I am also aware of how very difficult it is to hear a list of things your son has done wrong at school and know that you are not able to do very much about them as you are not there. All these things make a difficult time even more difficult to manage, so like many of my

families all you want to do is avoid them. The hardest thing to do is to work with the school however that is what your son needs. He needs the help you and the school can give him to find out why his behaviour is as it is and then support him so he can change it. Make an appointment to see the class teacher and the SENCo and talk to them about what is going on, how you feel and then together plan what you can all do to deal with the situation. Make a plan together and set up a time when you can meet up again and review what has been happening. A home school contact book can be useful. This stops the need to be called into the classroom at the end of the day as it is all written down. You can then read this quietly without your son when you get home. Once you have read it then you can talk to your son about it. Focus on the positives. Don’t ignore the difficult things that have happened ask him what happened and listen to his answer without interrupting. When he has finished ask what he might do differently next time that would make the outcome different. Think about different strategies together. Make sure you finish with a positive comment. Children tend to respond to these conversations best when they are doing other things, playing in the sink, or doing a job with the adult they are talking to. Your son will be exhausted at the end of the day as he will have been trying very hard to manage. Be aware of this and try and comment on all the positive things he does from the moment you pick him up, ‘catch him being good’ Make sure you can give him as much attention as possible on your way home. Ignore your phone and talk about his day and yours. You may find a parenting course is a useful way of understanding children’s behaviour and what to do about it. They can be really helpful and supportive in difficult times with lots of ideas and strategies that really work. Some parents find them a bit scary at first but after the first session never look back.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions, • Restlessness and an inability to focus, • An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted.
