The

Reading Corner Whatever the season, it's never the wrong time of year for reading. Bedtime wouldn't be bedtime without a story to share. This month, we've been sent a selection of books to review by prolific children's publisher, Maverick. We handed them over to one of our trusted team of reviewers who will give you the lowdown on these stories below. To find out more about these, and other Maverick titles, visit: www.maverickbooks.co.uk

This month, our books have been expertly reviewed by Lily, aged 8 from Hastings.

A Box of Socks By Amanda Brandon and Catalina Echeverri I liked this book because it was fun. My favourite line was "Grab a sock, put it on, if it's wrong, pass it on.". I think the story was trying to say "If you help or be kind, you will get a reward in life." which I think is a good message.

A Gold Star for George By Alice Hemming and Kimberley Scott At first I thought his friends were going to be mean to him but instead they gave him a gold star that was made with love. I really enjoyed this story and I loved the pictures.

Pirates Don't Drive Diggers By Alex English & Duncan Beedie I liked all the rhymes and pictures, and I think this is a great book for young children to read and learn new words. I think the message was "Don't let go of your dreams."

Hedgehugs - Horace and Hattiepillar by Lucy Tapper & Steve Wilson I saved this book until last because I absolutely loved the cute front cover, and it turned out to be a cute book as well. It was about two best friends, and I think it was trying to say "We're all beautiful just the way we are."

Children who aren’t reading on their own yet can take part by sharing books or audio books, and this year, books which have been downloaded from the East Sussex Libraries website will also count towards the total. Childcare Choosing the right childcare provider for your child can be a daunting task for parents, so to help out parents taking this step for the first time, here are some tips and hints: It's always a good idea to visit several childcare providers, at each one, look for: • Trained and experienced staff, they should be ready to learn and respond to the individual needs of your child. • Children who seem happy and purposeful, busy and engaged but comfortable in their surroundings. • Safe and clean premises that offer a warm welcome. • Planned and organised activities While visiting a childcare provider you should ask questions to make sure you're making an informed choice. Questions to consider are: • What qualifications do the staff have? • What is the ratio of staff to children and how many children attend each day? • Are food and nappies provided for the children? • How is the children's behaviour managed, is there a policy for discipline? • Does each child have a key worker (one member of staff who has main responsibility for each child)? Hopefully these suggestions, along with checking the childcare providers Ofsted report at www.ofsted.gov.uk, will help you find the right place for your child to thrive!

Dear Alison, Our Son is in Year 6. His teachers have always described him as a poor listener and say he is often in a world of his own. Due to the fact that he has been struggling with both literacy and maths for several years and his progress has been slow he was assessed by the Educational Psychologist last term. They have found that he has a poor working memory and school have advised us to work on this at home. We would be happy to support him however we don’t understand what working memory is – is this different to normal memory? What can we do to support him? Thank you for your email working memory can cause huge difficulties with learning and is not often picked up on. Educational Psychologists use the term ‘working memory’ to describe our ability to hold in our mind and mentally manipulate information over short periods of time. Working memory is often thought of as the ‘mental note pad’ which we use to store information on when we are undertaking mental activities. A way of understanding working memory is if you think about how you do mental arithmetic. Imagine someone asking you to add 46 and 27 together, without a pen and paper or a calculator. First you would need to hold the two numbers in your working memory. Then you would need to add the units together and store that whilst you add the tens together. You then would need to remember both numbers and combine them. 6 + 7 = 13, 40 + 20 =60, 60 + 13 is 73. Without working memory we would not be able to carry out these kinds of mental activities in which we have to both keep in mind some information while processing other material. We use working memory for many things including: remembering a new telephone number Following verbal directions such as ‘Go straight over at the roundabout, take the first right by the sports field and the school is on the right opposite the church’. Calculating the cost of a few items at the shops. Working memory is limited and some situations lead to the loss of information from it: Distraction, trying to hold in mind too much information or engaging in a demanding task like addition of numbers. Many of the learning activities that your son is engaged in within the classroom, reading, mathematics, science, or other areas of the curriculum, impose quite considerable burdens on his working memory. Activities will often require him to hold in mind some information (for example, a sentence to be written down) while doing something that for

him is mentally challenging (such as spelling the individual words in the sentence). He will also have problems following lengthy instructions to do one thing after another. There are many things you can do to support him. These include following instructions games, Memory games like Kim’s game, teaching him to create a task sheet where he records the things he needs to do as you say them – he could use pictures or words whatever suits him best. Support him, learn to use a variety of memory aids, a mobile phone can provide many of these such as a calendar, memo, dictaphone or voice recording, alarm clock etc. Dear Alison, We have a daughter in year 3 who is struggling with her reading. Her class teacher is concerned about her progress and has told us we need to hear her read each night. It has now got to the stage where she really doesn’t want to read at home as she feels she is ‘useless’. I am finding it really hard hearing her talk about herself in this way. What can I do to help her? Reading is a complex process which uses a range of strategies. Children use the pictures within the story to understand what is happening, and then they tend to learn by memory the words of simple stories. They then learn sight words and to these they add their phonic knowledge and start to sound out words as they read. It would be really helpful if you could have a conversation with your daughter’s class teacher to discuss which aspects your daughter is finding difficult. If it is her sight vocabulary then you could concentrate on that using a variety of games at home and not just reading her book. If it is her phonics then this is the area you can concentrate on. Reading is something that you want your daughter to enjoy again. Choose a book and share it together with you reading some and her reading a bit. Write her notes and put them on her bed or on the fridge. Do some cooking together and read the recipe together. There are many ways to engage her in reading in different ways just use your imagination. If you need to support her sight vocabulary then choose 5 words a week and work on those. You can hide the words around the room and if she can find them and read them then she gets them. Put them on the stairs so that you read them together as you walk up and down. Write them in the air whilst waiting or going to school, make them out of magnetic letters on the fridge or when she is in the bath use the foam letters. Most importantly HAVE FUN.

If your daughter is struggling with phonics then there are many phonics games on the internet you can find and play. Or you can make up your own. Sound out a word if she can blend it together then she wins a point. She then sounds out one for you. You can make cards together and then use those to help you. Give her a picture of a CVC word (Consonant Vowel Consonant like cat, dog, pan etc) and then ask her to segment it into sounds for you to listen to and give the word. Dear Alison, I have a teenager in Year 8 at secondary school who is struggling to manage and deal with anxiety and panic attacks. She is at the stage where she is frightened to go to school in case she has an attack and can’t manage. What can we do and who can help us? Thank you for your email. This is probably the issue I have most questions about each month. Anxiety is a really difficult thing to manage and needs to be supported as early as possible. Anxiety is a natural part of our emotional responses, however for some children and young people their response can be much higher than the situation warrants. It can lead to panic attacks, vomiting and avoidance of situations in case they experience an attack. It is as though their threshold is much lower than the majority of people and so this leads to a physical response as well as a cognitive one which then ends up in a vicious circle. Children and young people respond very well to specialised help. This can involve strategies to calm and relax – such as yoga, mindfulness and meditation as well as understanding the brain and how this works and how the brain and body are linked. Strategies can be taught to support children and young people manage what they are feeling and to control this and claim their lives back. The best place to start is to talk to your GP and explain what is happening. He will probably refer you to the CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service). Within CAMHS you will find a range of qualified and trained people who will be able to assess and then support your daughter manage her anxiety. The CAMHS teams are very stretched at the moment and so the waiting time might be difficult. You can find fully qualified therapists who will help you support your daughter find a range of strategies that will help and reduce the anxiety and panic attacks. You can check out their qualifications and make sure they have worked with young people who have experienced overwhelming anxiety in the past.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •

Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,

Failure to learn,

Withdrawal,

Difficult behaviour,

Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,

Violence or aggressive outbursts,

Physical symptoms,

Anxiety,

Difficulties with transitions,

Restlessness and an inability to focus,

An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. Bee Scene! Popular family-friendly survey of wild flowers re-launches this summer holiday thanks to Nature's Path Plantlife's hugely successful "Bee Scene" survey has been rescued by family-owned cereal maker Nature's Path, after it's original funding had ended. Over 30,000 children have already taken part in the Wild Flower Survey since it's launch in 2010. Now thousands more will have the opportunity to explore the nature on their doorstep and learn more about the wild flowers growing there. Families can discover whether their local area is good for bumblebees by looking for bee-friendly wild flowers such as foxgloves, dandelions and clovers in their local green spaces. The results are then uploaded onto a virtual meadow map of the UK. The survey raises awareness and understanding in children of the importance of biodiversity in their local area, starting them on a path to enjoying wild flowers and realising their importance as part of our natural heritage. It also helps them understand the importance of wild flowers to our declining pollinators. For full details and "Bee Scene" resources are available online at www.plantlife.org.uk/beescene

Anyone who’s tried to keep up with a young child will know that most are naturally physically active and love to be on the go. What’s not always obvious though is that encouraging your child to be active on a regular basis can benefit their health for their whole life. You’re never too young to learn to love exercise and active children are more likely to grow into active adults. Regular exercise will help your child develop strong muscles and bones, help them sleep and make them more alert. The NHS recommend that children between 5 & 18 have at least 1 hour of exercise per day, though even gentle exercise such as walking to school counts towards this. As children grow it can be a challenge to give them enough daily activity and some older children

can be reluctant to remain active. It’s important to find activities they enjoy, as having fun is the best motivation of all. Over the next few pages, you’ll find details of some of the many, fantastic local clubs and organisations offering a wide range of fun ways to stay active and keep fit. Whichever activity suits you and your family, we hope you have a fantastic time getting active!

FAMILY DAYS OUT What’s the point in having kids if you can’t act like one yourself ? Days out with the kids give grown ups the perfect excuse to forget about adult responsibilities and enjoy having new experiences, just for the fun of it. Whether it’s tackling a new activity, visiting an interesting landmark, looking at the animals in a zoo or farm, or just enjoying the countryside, a family day out can really put a smile on everyone’s face. They’re also beneficial to your child, days out can be packed with new experiences and opportunities to learn. They can be the catalyst to getting your child interested in science/nature/reading/history (the list is endless) and are a great way to stimulate their inquisitive little minds! And it’s not just their minds that get stimulated, days out will involve some exercise, even if it’s just a good bit of walking! So, what are you waiting for ? Have a look through the magazine for some inspiration and plan your fab, family summer expedition!
