Frank’s Column My first full day in Honolulu was spent doing the whole tourist “thing”. I walked around feeling totally bemused by the sights and sounds of this beautifully clean, vibrant city, with its incredibly wide roads and where it seemed that every other car was a stretch limousine. The police vehicles which patrol the beach area around Waikiki and the wide boulevard which seems to run for miles along the seafront, looked just like old English three wheeled milk floats! I soon found out, however, that the similarity was purely visual. As I walked past one of them the driver must have got a call because the almost “Del Boy” look-a-like vehicle took off like it was on steroids! After lunch on that first day I spotted a tall, bronze statue which I thought was worth a second look. The statue was of a local hero who had won 3 gold and 2 silver medals in Olympic Swimming events during the 1920’s. He actually won his 2nd silver medal in the 1924 Olympics at the age of 34. His name was Duke Kahanamoku and he went on to become the father of modern day surfing. Later, as I paused for refreshment at a “remedial font”, I spotted the Hawaiian state flag flying proudly atop a public building. Imagine my surprise when I spotted that the top right hand quadrant of the flag was a Union Jack! As I had only had one beer I knew I wasn’t seeing things so next day, I decided to look further into this. It turned out that it was all to do with the first visit of Captain Cook to the Hawaiian Islands. He can’t have been too popular because on his second visit, a year later, the native
chiefs kebabed him with a wooden spear - end of Captain Cook! I could write volumes about my visit to Oahu, but I really want to end my column with an account of my visit to Pearl Harbour. As my visit was pre9/11 there were none of the security restrictions that are in force today, so everything about the day was very laid back. Pearl Harbour is best known for the attack by Japanese forces on the morning of Sunday 7th December 1941. The attack destroyed a huge part of the American Navy’s Pacific Fleet and cost nearly 3,000 lives. The splendid gardens have huge plaques dedicated to each ship destroyed, and each bears the names of crew members who perished. The most poignant is the sunken wreck of the battleship USS Arizona. This massive, 35,000 ton ship received a direct hit into it’s forward magazine and the resulting explosion caused it to sink in just nine minutes, taking over 1,000 crew down with it. It seems that some things really do come full circle as the recently decommissioned battleship, USS Missouri, on which Japanese surrender was accepted by General Douglas MacArthur, is now serving as a Naval museum only a few hundred yards from the wreck of the Arizona. The day after I went to Pearl Harbour I bade farewell to Oahu, and departed Honolulu airport for my next stop on Fiji, so until next time, watch how you go, stay healthy and enjoy living!

Protect your assets
There is a question playing on the minds of many older people these days, along the lines of: “We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the local authority get it all?” If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home costs, on average, £36,000 a year. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care may seem a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.
Married Couples: A legal trust arrangement within your will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose. Widowed/Single: The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now. “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children.” What would happen if your child/children were to experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? Did you know that capital gains tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right, call Collective Legal Solutions on 01424 854561 or 07967 159376 www.clshastings.co.uk

Make a Match and Share Your Home in East Sussex An innovative new scheme has been launched to provide help and support for the elderly and vulnerable in East Sussex. ‘Homeshare’ aims to match people together so that a householder gets a bit of extra help around the house in return for letting someone live in their home. This could be for anyone aged 18 years or over who may need help because they have a physical or learning disability, a mental health problem or feel they just need that extra bit of support to live independently. Adult Social Care will organise this match so that both parties benefit from the arrangement and will ensure that it is working well. Usually the householder will be an elderly person living on their own, providing a room for their sharer rentfree. In return the sharer will give about 10 hours a week unpaid help, such as cooking dinner, gardening or shopping. This works out well for both parties as they are safe in the knowledge that they are secure and have support from a Homeshare Co-ordinator in Adult Social Care. The Co-ordinator will aim to put the right people together, ensure security checks are in place, conduct in-depth interviews and provide ongoing support. This includes helping with the initial agreement and then monitoring its success. If the arrangement does not work out then it can be ended and new matches found if appropriate. An East Sussex spokesperson said: “Homeshare will provide benefits to many people in East Sussex. For example elderly people and others will be able to remain independent and secure in their own homes for longer and younger people will have a place to live. Of course this is not a substitute for professional care, if it is needed, but is a welcome boost to the wide range of services that can be provided in East Sussex”. Kate Hardy, who is managing the Homeshare Scheme for Adult Social Care said: “A householder can have some help, companionship, security and peace of mind about the person they are letting into their home. There is also reassurance for family and friends that their loved one is not alone and has a bit of extra help. For the homesharer there is somewhere to live, rent-free in an area or property that might otherwise be unaffordable”.
For further information contact Kate Hardy, Homeshare Co-ordinator on 01323 444107 or email kate.hardy@eastsussex.gov.uk www.eastsussex.gov.uk

other immediately so agreed to a trial period which now seems like a distant memory to them. They have the same sense of humour and enjoy many of the same things and Pat says she is enjoying Nick’s cooking! Sarah & Mary Mary is in her early 90’s and lived alone, she had a stroke a few years ago and has been left unable to use one arm. She also missed company. Sarah is a district nurse who works locally and was staying with a friend whilst looking for accommodation. She didn’t really want to live alone and liked the idea of being able to give someone some support and have a home to live in. They have similar interests and their diets are the same. Sarah does chores around the home that Mary can no longer manage and will take Mary to appointments when she can. They are both enjoying how the match has worked out for them. Colon Hydrotherapy or Colonic Irrigation is a simple and effective treatment that has existed for centuries. A Study in America examined 96 people awaiting operations with different bowel complaints, over half of them didn’t need surgery after 6 courses of colonic irrigation. We are exposed to many different types of toxins and pollutions which get stored in the large intestine. Once there, they can cause a variety of problems from candida, bloating, smelly wind, lethargy and bad skin to more serious problems such as colitis, diverticulitis, ulcers and the second biggest killer in England, bowel cancer. Even if you have a healthy diet and open your bowels regularly, your system will still benefit from a summer cleanse! The treatment is painless and odour free and lasts around 45 minutes. A disposable scope is inserted into the rectum, warm water is gently flushed into the colon, encouraging faeces, toxins and gas to be released. Why not give it a try, I look forward to meeting you - Lucy Rolles.

I
Tricia’s Column
’ve certainly been busy since my last column, not only have I been gadding about visiting castles, stately homes, and gardens, but I also took delivery of my 7th grandchild, Peggy, at 3am on the 17th May. She weighed in at 7lbs 1 and she is beautiful, happy and healthy. So, castles and gardens! I had a very busy start to May, visiting Chiddingstone Castle and Penshurst Place in one day, then Leeds Castle a couple of days later. Chiddingstone and Penshurst are two of the “Seven Wonders of the Weald”, seven tourist attractions located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty spanning the borders of Kent and Sussex. The full list includes Bedgebury Pinetum, Biddenden Vineyard, Kent & East Sussex Railway, Marle Place, and Merriments Gardens as well as Penshurst and Chiddingstone. Penshurst was first on our itinerary, an impressive, building, with certain parts dating from the 14th Century. After a walk through the building admiring a wide range of exhibits and architecture, we were treated
Chiddingstone Castle
Penshurst Place
to a tour of the wonderful gardens by the passionate and articulate head gardener. On an overcast day in May it was impressive enough, but I’m sure it’ll be at it’s best during the sunny days of July and August. After Penshurst, we headed over to Chiddingstone Castle. Tucked away in the picturesque Kent countryside, Chiddingstone feels very quiet and relaxed with wonderful, farreaching, countryside views and charming, landscaped gardens. Surprisingly, it houses collections of Japanese, Egyptian and Buddhist artefacts. These are the collections of former owner, Denys Eyre Bower who, by all accounts, was a classic English eccentric. After a full day’s exploring, I enjoyed a fabulous cream tea which was worth the trip to Chiddingstone on it’s own! You can find out more about the Seven Wonders of the Weald, and how you can win a pair of Seven Wonders Attraction Pass tickets, below. You can also read about my visit to Leeds Castle on the page opposite. Grandparents looking for School Holiday activity ideas should keep an eye out for our sister publication The Family Buzz (right) which is packed with information for family fun! I’ll be back in September with more adventures...
Penshurst Gardens
Your Chance to win! The Seven Wonders of the Weald are unique places to visit, and Golden Times is delighted to be able to offer two lucky readers a chance to win a pair of Seven Wonders “Attraction Passes” which allow free entry to each of the seven attractions! Stroll through the pines at Bedgebury, relive the days of steam at the Kent & East Sussex Railway, explore the history of Penshurst Place, walk among the flowers at Merriments Gardens and Marle Place, sample fine English wines at Biddenden and marvel at the eccentric collections at Chiddingstone Castle. A tour of the Seven Wonders is a fantastic way to see the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and to win a pair of Seven Wonders passes, all you have to do is tell us which two of the wonders our columnist Tricia visited in May (Hint, see her column above!) You can either send your answer on a postcard to us at : Golden Times Magazine, 78 Elphinstone Rd, Hastings, E Sussex, TN34 2BS or e-mail your answer to win@goldentimes.co.uk. We’ll pick the winners on the 15th of August so be sure to enter before then!

A
s I mentioned in my last column, I was lucky enough to be invited along to Leeds Castle to see the “What the Butler Saw” exhibition when it opened at the beginning of May. Leeds Castle is a beautiful place to visit at any time, but this new exhibition brings to life a fascinating period in the castle’s history. The focus of “What the Butler Saw” is the period between the wars when Leeds Castle hosted glorious weekend house parties. Famous friends of the Castle’s last private owner, Lady Baillie, would regularly stay at the castle to enjoy the high life! You can see Goldentimes’ very own sales & marketing director, Debby, enjoying a bit of the high life in the photo to the right! The fact that the exhibition is based on life during the 1920’s and 30’s made it more interesting for me. The fashions, and tales of extravagant parties all seem a little bit closer to the modern day. There are many rooms to visit throughout the castle and each gives an insight into a different facet of life there. You’ll also find a wealth of fascinating facts and photographs on display along the way. The exhibition is open until October 21st, with entrance included in the price of admission to the castle. www.wheelerswalkies.co.uk info@wheelerswalkies.co.uk Vicky Payne is a qualified, experienced vet providing complementary veterinary care to pets in East Sussex and West Kent. Holistic Veterinary Care aims to bring the whole animal back to health rather than just treating symptoms. Holistic techniques combine well with conventional treatments, and in many cases conventional drugs are essential to success. ll the team at Whites proudly welcome you to our family run restaurant situated on George Street in Hastings’ historic Old Town. Nestled between the ancient East and West Hills, Whites is just a short distance from Rock-a-Nore beach, home to the local fishing fleet, with it’s famous black net huts. Our Specials Board is changed daily to reflect the differing seasons and the availability of local produce, much of which is landed yards away by the Hastings fishing fleet. During summer we also offer dishes such as fresh, local old town whole plaice with caperberry sauce or fresh dressed crab with marinated seafood salad. Our steaks are all top quality British beef and are char grilled to your preference to give them the mouth watering flavour we are so well known for. Visit www.whitesbar.co.uk to view our wonderful seafood platters, the best in Hastings, as well as our everyday main menu. We also have a Light Lunch Menu, offering one course for £8.50pp or two courses for £12.50pp. To make the most of the summer,
Whites Lobster Bisque Serves 4 Ingredients: 2 Live lobsters (small) 1 Onion, coarsely chopped 1 Stalk celery, coarsely chopped 1 Carrot, coarsely chopped 3 Bay leaves 1/2 lb. Butter 2 Quarts water 1/4 Cup flour 2 Cups heavy cream 1/2 Cup sherry 1/4 Cup Brandy Salt & white pepper to taste Directions: If you are using live lobsters, the most humane way to prepare them is to pop them in the fridge for 30 minutes to send them into hibernation. Place the lobsters in a large, heavy pot. Cover with salted water, bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. Drain and plunge the lobsters into cold water to prevent further cooking. Extract the meat, chop it and then set to one side.
Whites has a canopied outside dining area where we are able to seat approximately 20 people. The perfect spot to enjoy the ambiance of Hastings Old Town or to take a break from the excitement of Hastings Pirate Day and the Old Town Carnival during July and August. Families are warmly welcomed; high chairs and a separate children’s menu are available for our younger guests. Here at Whites we are always aiming to improve our business and we are very proud of our newly refitted open kitchen. Not only can you see your food being prepared to the highest standards but also enjoy the enticing aromas generated by our talented chef. We recommend booking in advance as visitors to the ‘Trip Advisor’ website have rated us the top Seafood & Steak restaurant in Hastings ensuring we get busy, busy, busy! We hope to welcome you to Whites soon, please contact us if there is anything we can do to make your visit even more enjoyable. Bon appetit! Alex and Ellie
Place the lobsters’ remains in a roasting pan with the onion, celery, carrot, bay leaves and butter. Roast in a preheated oven at 400ºF for 45 minutes.
Remove from the oven and strain off the butter into a heavy saucepan. Place the remaining contents of the roasting pan into the 2 quarts of water and boil until the liquid is reduced by half. Strain in the stock. Heat the butter in the saucepan, add the flour and stir constantly for 4 minutes to create a roux. Add the stock and blend well then add the cream, Sherry and Brandy. Simmer for 30 minutes, season with salt & pepper to taste. Strain the bisque, add the lobster meat and serve immediately.
