Frank’s Travels - Confessions of a holiday Rep part 2 Having completed my tour of duty on Gran Canaria during the second week in May 1994 I returned to my home in Lincolnshire for the Summer. When I returned home I knew I had to do something with myself, so I decided to offer my services as a volunteer ambulance car driver. The Ambulance Service in the UK is basically a free service provided by the NHS which is administered on a County or Regional basis. The whole system nationwide relies quite heavily on volunteer car drivers who are simply paid a mileage allowance for their contribution to the system. This turned out to be one of the most gratifying periods of my life, and I cannot stress enough the degree of satisfaction I got from helping to provide people, with all sorts of health problems and disabilities, with a doorto-door service. The experience had quite a sobering effect on me, and made me appreciate even more my own good fortune with regards to my health, and that of my family. I can still look at myself in the mirror and ask myself,"So what's to complain about?" The Summer seemed to fly by, and before I knew it October had rolled around and it was time for me to pack my kit, and head off for my Winter assignment to the island of Tenerife. My hotel was located in the North of the island, in the small resort of Puerto De La Cruz and as this was my second tour of duty I soon settled in. I met up with the resort manager who was a rather large, but very welcoming Southern Irish woman. She had her office located in the south of the island so basically we couldn't have been based further apart which suited both of us just fine, and all I was required to do was visit her office once a month and brief her on whatever was happening in my neck of the woods.

The resort was situated in the shadow of Mount Teide which is the highest mountain in Spain. It was quite amusing over the winter months to see the snow gathering on Teide while just a few miles away tourists were lying sunbathing on the beach. The beaches there have black sand, yes you read that right, Black sand. It looks really strange until you get used to it as it looks like a giant oil slick but is in fact perfectly normal sand that just happens to be black. This is caused by the volcanic nature of the area: Teide is volcanic, and last erupted just over 100 years ago. It still puffs out volcanic ash to this day making the peak look like a giant ice-cream! The north of Tenerife is much wetter than the south which means that, where the south is quite arid the north is very lush with huge banana plantations and the most amazing display of flowers and shrubs growing along the main highway. I found a very interesting old place to take my guests to for a morning tour. It was a beautiful Orchid garden which had been developed by a wealthy English family over many years and was now open to the public for a very reasonable admission fee which included a guided tour. Agatha Christie was a special friend of the family and I was shown the secluded corner of the garden where she wrote a number of her novels. The season absolutely flew past, and before I knew it I was once again packing my kit ready for my move back home for the summer. I had already been told that my next tour would be in Cyprus in the resort of Paphos . Until the next time watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living. Frank

Julia Meanwell - Grand Nannies It can be really hard to say no to a request to help with looking after your grandchildren; especially if you know their parents are suffering financial hardship. I sometimes get the impression that there is a strong message out there that grandparents ‘should’ want to help out with their grandchildren. Some parents want to return to work after their children are born but many have little choice these days as they would not be able to manage financially otherwise. Although many grandparents are happy to help they may sometimes feel that too much is expected of them and that they are taken for granted a little. If you are considering helping out with childcare then you need to be honest and realistic about what you can and can’t do. It’s important to get the ground rules clear at the start before you commit yourself to any childcare arrangements. Acknowledge your limits, parents may not notice the strain of running around after a very active toddler but grandparents are often left feeling exhausted and drained. A toddler's daily activities have been found to amount to as much energy as an adult running a marathon or going 83 rounds in a boxing ring. The amount of childcare grandparents provide for their families has risen sharply in the last decade; due to this increase it is now estimated to be saving Britain £17bn in childcare. One in four working families depends on grandparents for childcare. This varies widely and ranges from regular childcare for babies and toddlers to dropping off and picking up children from school. How many hours you put in should be up to you and how much you feel you can manage. Will childcare leave

5 Benefits of Being Computer Literate By Neil Duncan 1. Browsing the Web – being able to ‘browse the web’ can expand your knowledge source; by using a click of a mouse and a little guidance you will be able to source an array of things such as: holidays, music and recipes; you can search restaurant reviews for a restaurant you’d like to go to, infact you can pretty much type in anything in the search bar and it will help you find an answer. 2. Stay in contact with friends and family – social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest are all ways in which you can communicate with people across the world; these sites enable us to see how the grandkids are growing up and see how your friend is settling into a new location. The sites also enable the user to share pictures and documents with the ones we cherish. These sites also help people from being lonely as they’re a way of keeping people connected. 3. Education – being computer literate allows the user to perform tasks that others may not, therefore the employee is in a better position to progress and be succesful in the workplace. 4. Improving Quality of Life: i. Shopping – for people who cannot drive or struggle with bags, internet shopping is a great way to take the hassle out of trailing round the shops. ii. Stimulation – the Web is a great way of accessing games, news, entertainments sites and forums without having to leave the comfort of your armchair. 5. Storage – Computers can store large volumes of information such as: letters, books, music and pictures without taking too much space. Neil Duncan is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Hastings/Eastbourne areas. He can visit your home for 1:1 lessons, can help with many devices and can cover topics such as; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges start at £35 per hour which include training materials and VAT. Please call 01323 700 170 or 01424 400 190 to enquire.

Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?
If you have to go into care you may be "means tested" by your Local Authority to assess your ability to pay for that care. LIVING THE ALEXANDER WAY OF LIFE “Walking back to Happiness… (Oompah, oh yay yay!)” I’m not obsessed with song titles (I know I mentioned a Beatles song in my last piece). However, at the first sign of sunny weather my thoughts always turn to getting out and about more. My running days are over now. In fact I don’t think they ever got started, but I do love a walk and we are always being told that twenty minutes’ walk a day keeps everything at bay, or at least helps us to keep more mobile. Question… “How do you walk?” Answer …”You just put one foot in front of another”! Well, yes, that’s true, but there is so much more to it than that and knowing how to walk in the way we were designed to, makes it a far more pleasurable experience. The trouble is, our postural habits, which we have gathered over the years, sometimes makes even gentle walking difficult. Add to the mix back, knee, hip problems and perhaps arthritis and life becomes even more problematic. I can relate to this as I started having back problems in my twenties. Thankfully it is more controlled now. Next time you’re out walking become aware of how you do it. The following tips should help. Place your heel down first and follow through to the toes. If you feel unsteady in any way, shorten your stride so that each time you step your weight is over one foot, not in between the two. Keep your knees soft, not locked, as locking knees makes you more unstable. Finally keep your chest open and your head up. “Ah, ha”, I hear you say, “you need to
"Murder in Mind" by Peggy Willetts
Mollie Perkins laid her knitting down onto her lap and stared up at the ceiling. She sighed heavily. There it was again. The young couple in the flat above having another argument. They had only moved in about a month ago, and at least three times a week they seemed to argue. Mollie had met the man briefly in the hall one day and he had seemed very pleasant, passing the time of day, he certainly didn't seem the argumentative type. "But then you never know", Molly thought to herself.. Another week went by, and Mollie had just finished her shepherds pie and washed up the dishes. She was about to settle herself in her favourite chair with her knitting, when voices were raised upstairs. "Oh not again", thought Mollie, "Why on Earth do they stay together?". And then Mollie put her hand to her mouth and gasped. The man's voice drifted distinctively through the ceiling, loud and clear. "I'm not putting up with your behaviour any longer.", he rasped, "Going behind my back, you little bitch, I'm going to silence you forever." Then came a terrible scream from the girl, followed by deathly silence. Mollie's blood ran cold, her hands were clammy and she was shaking like a leaf. "Oh if only my Cyril were here", she thought to herself, "he would know what to do." But her husband Cyril had died the year before, so Mollie had sold the house they had shared together and moved into the ground floor flat. Everything had been going fine until the couple had moved in

know where you’re stepping” (not least sometimes what you are stepping into!) That’s okay just tip the head forward, but try not to bend the torso forward too much as this puts strain on the joints. As a matter of interest your head weights around 6kg (12lb in old money) so where you place it is important for the freedom of the body as a whole. Practise this when you’re next out walking, ideally by the sea with a nice drink at the end. The Hastings to Bexhill walk is great as it’s flat, almost, and there are plenty of cafes along the way. Enjoy! As part of my Alexander Technique work I run courses specifically dedicated to walking well and taking pressure off the joints. By the way, the song title above from the sixties was sung by Helen Shapiro. Showing my age again… upstairs, although Mollie did get lonely at times without Cyril. "I'll wait until tomorrow and then decide what to do." Mollie thought, but once in bed she tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Finally she got up, pulled the curtains back just in time to see the man from upstairs getting into his car. He was on his own which shocked Mollie even more, the couple always went to work together. The morning passed in a daze for Mollie, and then at lunchtime the man returned, and she heard him clomping upstairs. Mollie made up her mind. She reached for the phone and dialled 999. "Police" she whispered, "I think there has been a murder!" She then sank down into an armchair, and within a few minutes, two burly police officers arrived. Mollie explained what she had seen and heard, and followed the officers up the stairs to the couple's front door. They rapped on the door and the man opened it, looking surprised to see the police. When told what his neighbor had heard, he looked puzzled, and then a grin spread accross his face. "Oh my goodness, Chloe and I have been rehearsing for a play we are going to be in." he explained. "We belong to the Amateur Dramamtic Society. Chloe's been working from home today, here she is now."

Gardening tips for mid-late summer by Phoenix Gardening. Well the sun has been shining but temperatures are still on the cool side for June but the shorts are on even if I’m wearing them with a jumper. What’s to do? Hoe those weeds off if you think it’s going to be dry and hot enough to dry them, it prevents them re rooting. In dry spells a water butt is a godsend, water vulnerable plants before they start showing signs of stress.

How often have you dressed in an outfit you’ve happily worn many times before, only to look in the mirror and think, “I hate the way I look in this”, or perhaps, “this just doesn’t feel right today”.
I HATE HOW I LOOK IN THIS!
It happens to me all the time. I’ll wear a particular combination a few times and feel fabulous in it, then a couple of weeks later I’ll try it on and think “Yuk, did I actually like myself in this?” Time will pass and it might well come back into favour again. The mood we are in, the way our bodies feel, the weather, perhaps even the phase of the moon – who knows what causes it - but there are definitely times when something feels right to wear and other times when it doesn’t. I’m not talking about appropriateness here. Of course, a particular dress feels right for one occasion and not for another. No, this feeling has nothing to do with the suitability of an outfit, it’s purely that today it just DOES NOT WORK. Does it matter and should we pay any attention to these aberrations. I think we should. Feeling good in your clothes is crucial if you want to be confident and out-going. I know very confident women who are reduced to wallflowers skulking around in dark corners because they feel uncomfortable about the way they look. Wearing clothes that make you feel self-conscious or unattractive immediately put you at a disadvantage. It’s hard to focus on other people when you’re worried about
how you look. Your shoulders will droop, you might avoid drawing attention to yourself and you are more likely to feel anxious in company. Feeling good about your presence in the world means you walk tall, you sashay down the street, you smile at people and you welcome others into your world.
Listen to your inner voice when you check yourself in the mirror. If you hear “Look at you, you gorgeous creature”, keep it on. If you wince and spend more than two minutes trying to convince yourself it’s OK, take it off. Wedding outfit (mother of the bride) update for regular readers of this column. The dress is bought. I found it in a small boutique in the back streets of Pescara in Italy as I was shopping with a friend who lives there. We both loved it immediately. I tried for a discount but the owner was having none of that. We left saying it was too expensive expecting her to run after us with a special offer. She waved us goodbye. When I returned 10 minutes later she had it packaged up ready for me to take. She smiled sweetly and charged me the full price, no doubt grumbling about “le donne inglese”. I absolutely love it now, let’s hope I’m going to feel good about it on the day!

Choose lamb which has fine, firm-grained flesh, is light pink in colour and has creamy-white fat. When roasting meat the goal is for it to be moist and tender and there are two ways to get this; the first is to roast the meat just until it hits the sweet spot at medium rare and the second is to keep roasting well beyond well done where the bonds that hold the fibres of the meat start to loosen and the fat starts to render returning the meat to a moist and tender state. Ingredients (Serves 6-8) 2kg Leg of Lamb 10 garlic cloves Bunch of fresh rosemary Generous handful of dried Oregano 1 tsp cumin 10g/2oz butter Olive oil or sunflower oil 40g/2oz of butter 2 eggs 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 glasses of red wine 2 x 20g stock cube Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cooking foil Cumin & rosemary garlic butter preparation: Chop garlic and rosemary finely, discard hard stalks, mix with cumin and butter and rub into the meat, firstly stab the meat with a sharp pointed knife a few times to penetrate the flavour

into the meat, best to make little pockets so you can insert the butter which allows it to infuse during cooking. Season with salt, pepper, and oregano. Aubergine preparation: Cut aubergine into large slices and beat the eggs in a large bowl with smoked paprika and seasoning, dip aubergine slices in the egg mixture, heat a large frying pan with olive oil/sunflower oil and fry aubergine until slightly brown for a few minutes. Then remove and set aside to add to the lamb at the last stage. Lamb Preparation method Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 Place the lamb on a roasting tray, add half of the cumin, rosemary garlic butter, a generous amount of salt and pepper for seasoning. Pour 2 glasses of red wine into baking tray for the gravy. Cover with foil and cook for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven, place lamb on a plate, and pour meat juices into a small saucepan. Rub remainder of the seasoned butter over the lamb, return it to the roasting tray, cover with foil and cook for further 45 minutes. Put peeled vegetables in a saucepan (i.e. potatoes, parsnips, carrots, onions) and bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes, al dente, drain vegetables and spray with olive oil and season, once the second 45 minutes of cooking is completed, remove foil from lamb and add vegetables to the lamb and return to the oven, including prepared aubergine, for final roasting of further 45 minutes. Prepare gravy Add half pint of water to the saucepan with meat juices and add 2 x 20g stock cubes. Mix thoroughly, bring to the boil and then simmer for 5 minutes. Season with ground black pepper.
