elcome to the 2nd issue of Golden Times magazine. It certainly seems a very long time ago that we put together the launch issue during the Autumn of 2011! We’ve had a huge amount of positive feedback from our readers regarding the last magazine. It’s been really rewarding to have so many of you tell us you enjoyed our publication, so we’ve tried our best to bring you more of the same. Thanks must also go to all of our advertisers as, without their support, it would not be possible to produce the magazine. The Fantastic response to our Winter 2011 issue has prompted us to make Golden Times Bi-monthly for 2012, with issues appearing in May, July, September and November. We hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine as much as the first, but if you have any ideas or suggestions for improvements to the magazine, we’re always keen to hear from you so don’t be shy!

Competition winners Back in our November issue, we offered readers the chance to win one of two “family” tickets to see the Holiday on Ice “Tropicana” show at the Brighton Centre. Thanks to all of our readers who entered, we’re sorry you couldn’t all win, but the tickets went to Kathryn Rumsby of Bexhill and Marion Taylor of Hastings. Kathryn is in the top picture along with her husband Rick and her friends Dana and Sybil. Marion is in the lower picture along with her friends Caroline, Denise and John. Marion is in the red coat, holding a copy of the November issue of Golden Times. Marion also sent us one of her delightful paintings of Hastings, which you can see, between the two photographs. The two groups were seated together and a wonderful time was had by all. Keep a look out for more competitions over the next few issues, next time it could be you !

Frank’s Column Hello again, I hope you all enjoyed the festive season. My New Year’s resolution for 2012 was to seek warmer climes as soon as possible, hence I’m writing my column lying beside my hotel pool on the island of Koh Samui, just off the coast of Thailand. I could have done with a bag carrier but unfortunately there were no takers !!! At the end of my last column I wrote that I would tell you how, and why I ended up living in Spain. The "why" is easy to explain, sun, sea, sand and sangria! Explaining “how” is a bit more complicated. When I retired in 2001 I decided to celebrate my retirement by packing a rucksack, and "Island Hopping"across the Pacific ocean from America to New Zealand. When I returned 4 months later I thought to myself "Blimey, what do I do now?” I had some friends living in Spain just south of Torrevieja so I paid them a visit and fell in love with the area. It wasn't too long before I had arranged to rent an apartment a few hundred metres from the sea. With accommodation sorted I flew back to the UK to sort a few things out. Having decided that everything in my life that truly meant anything to me (apart from my family) would fit in my car I set about divesting myself of all surplus goods and chattels. I booked a trip on the ferry from Plymouth to Santander in northern Spain, and drove the 600 miles to Torrevieja. Ole!! Job done. As I have spent a large part of my life uprooting both myself, and my family I quickly settled into my new way of life

and proceeded to get my apartment “Shipshape and Bristol fashion” as you ex matelots would say! As the months passed, and my family started paying me regular visits, life was idyllic. However, after a couple of years the whole joy of this existence began to wear a bit thin. This was probably due to my developing a routine so rigid I knew what day it was by what I was doing. How boring was that? Fortunately a friend came to the rescue when he asked me if I would drive him to Alicante airport and pick him up on his return. He insisted on paying the going rate for the job, and when he returned he was so happy with the service, he started recommending me to his friends and family. Before long my “taxi” was running to and from the airport regularly. My passengers appreciated having a reliable, English speaking driver who knew the area and I appreciated a break in my routine. Meeting lots of new people, boredom soon became a thing of the past. This experience shows that if you keep yourself mentally and physically active then there is still so much out there that is worthwhile living for. In my next column I will begin my Pacific journey from my jump-off point on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, the capital of which is Honolulu. Until then watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living!

Speedy Relief with faultless service David suffered from severe pain in both knees for several years as a result of his job in the heavy engineering industry, where he spent a lot of his time working on his knees, putting pressure on his joints. He had a first knee replacement operation three years ago, and when he started suffering similar pain in his right leg, he visited his GP as the pain was starting to affect his hip and the pain was so bad, he could hardly walk. At the time of the operation, David was an existing member of Benenden Healthcare Society but luckily got the green light for the replacement knee operation on the NHS, and selected Benenden Hospital through the NHS Choose and Book scheme: “I chose Benenden because I am aware of the very low infection rates and the high level of cleanliness at the Hospital as well as the provision of care offered,” said David. Following the referral, he had an initial appointment with the consultant at Benenden Hospital who carried out the operation. At the consultation, David’s leg was re-examined and x-rayed and it confirmed that he definitely needed a knee replacement, as not only did he experience severe pain when walking but it was adding pressure to his hip which was causing additional pain. David then went through the pre assessment where he was given information and advice about the operation, what was going to happen and also the aftercare arrangements: “The experts talked me through every stage of the operation, explained everything that

was going to happen and why and what the process was following the operation in terms of after care and getting back on my feet again,” said David. David was particularly impressed with the speed of the operation and the short time he had to spend in hospital: “I was admitted on the Saturday morning and back home two days later, on Monday afternoon. I was surprised at the little amount of time I was in hospital for, and I think the main reason for this was the level of care and expertise Benenden Hospital provides.” “I honestly cannot fault the service at Benenden Hospital and also the standard of care provided,” continued David: “The surgeon, the nurses, even the admin support staff were helpful, very professional, friendly and easy to build a rapport with. I would definitely recommend people to the Hospital to see for themselves just how good the care you receive is.” David Steele, Maidstone, Kent.

NUTRITIONAL ADVICE Penny Davenport has been a Nutritional Therapist for more than 25 years. She is an author, has written for magazines and has appeared on radio & TV. She is passionate that as many people as possible learn how food can benefit their health, and simple ideas can even change their lives. Penny has provided some case studies for us to demonstrate the benefits of good nutrition: Juliet has looked after her mother since she had a stroke more than 10 years ago. One of the effects was that her swallowing reflex had diminished and eating was a very slow process. Because she was unable to walk and do very little for herself, her bowel function was sluggish. Although her mother’s weight was stable, there were concerns that she was underweight. I suggested that the food given to her mother needed to be the best possible quality and nutritionally sound and provided suggestions for meals throughout the day: Start the day with hot water with a slice of lemon and a teaspoon of honey, Manuka honey is very healing. This helps to relax and alkalise the body. For breakfast (The most important meal of the day) oats soaked overnight in water (that makes them more digestible) with a spoonful of linseeds, For porridge, cook gently for 4-5 minutes, or raw as a muesli, then add a spoonful each of ground almonds, dessicated coconut, tahini, molasses, and a little fresh lemon juice. Add to this some soft grated apple and some plain natural yoghurt, goats or sheep is best. These extra things will give the body protein, carbohydrate, calcium, iron, fatty acids and Vitamin C amongst other vitamins and minerals. Soaked and chopped figs and prunes can be added to aid bowel movements. To remain hydrated, a drink should be included at mid-morning. Depending on the appetite, a little fish, chicken, eggs or vegetarian protein, for lunch with fresh, steamed vegetables. During the afternoon, tea, with a biscuit or piece of cake. Soup for supper, ideally homemade, (but carton soups are very good), with a slice of wholemeal bread or a rice cake or oatcake. For a dessert plain yoghurt with fresh fruit which can be mashed, grated or liquidised. The greater the variety of fruit the better. Juliet felt this was very nutritious, but was concerned at the amount of food for someone not active. I reccommended choosing whatever met her mothers needs best and to give as much variety as possible, not forgetting fluids. After 3 months Juliet found her mother was brighter and her bowels were much better. By sipping her drinks, her mother was able to drink more than she thought. Geoffrey came into the Clinic one day very distressed with a painful wrist which had been diagnosed as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and an operation seemed the only answer. He was keen to find a natural remedy so I suggested Vitamin B6 100mg twice daily for 1 month and then review the symptoms. He found this worked well for him. After a month I suggested a B complex of 50mg. B6 is a water soluble vitamin, any excess that is not used by the body is excreted. Any individual B vitamin should only be used for a short while, to maintain the balance of the complex. Penny will be providing more nutritional advice in our next issue, if you have a question about how to improve your health through nutrition, please email : penny@goldentimes.co.uk

Facial Revitalisation Acupuncture Facial Revitalisation Acupuncture (FRA) is a safe, natural and pain free holistic treatment combining facial acupuncture and massage. Golden Times talks to Julia Hancock a local acupuncturist… What is FRA? FRA is a treatment combining facial acupuncture, traditional acupuncture and facial massage. It has the effect of reducing the appearance of facial lines and

bags under the eyes, improving muscle tone, and promoting a more radiant, youthful complexion. As traditional acupuncture is used as part of this treatment, usually people feel more vitality and health as an added benefit. The photo shows how relaxing an FRA treatment is! About Julia Julia has been working with acupuncture since 2001 and FRA since 2005. Julia is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and works in Battle at the Healthy Living Clinic (see opposite page), also in Brighton. Testimonial “Having had a course of treatment with Julia, not only does the skin on my face look greatly refreshed, but terrible psoriasis which I’d had on my legs for some years has almost completely vanished due to the effect of the acupuncture.” Anonymous, E.sussex. Pilates, No pain but lots of gain There is much talk these days of Pilates being an excellent form of exercise for older people, but many people are still unfamiliar with the technique. We asked local Pilates Instructor, Vikki Jones, to tell us more: “Pilates is a body conditioning routine aimed at building flexibility, mobility, strength and developing long, lean muscles. It is suitable for all levels of ability from the complete beginner to the more regular exerciser. As the exercises focus on control they are gentle on the joints and connective tissues making them ideal for older people who wish to remain active. Pilates is designed to offer smooth, flowing movements from a stable, strong center, with core stability being fundamental. The aim is to realign muscles and open up spaces between each vertebra. This ‘core’ of muscles supports the spine, posture and the way we move. This can improve or correct stability, increase body awareness and bring benefits to everyone, regardless of age. Its known that the inventor of this technique, Joseph Pilates, practiced it himself until he was into his eighties which must count as an endorsement for Pilates as a great way to stay fit and strong as you grow older.” If you are interested in taking up Pilates, you can contact Vikki on 01424 720178 or 07835 746708. Spring is always a great time to be a Grandparent, there’s always so much to do with events at Easter and all the farms having the new spring lambs. This year I’m getting a spring lamb of my own as my daughter is due to deliver my 7th grandchild

in May. Who knows, maybe one of the other 6 will read this, see the Kent & East Sussex Railway ad below and take me on a lovely steam train ride as a treat for their hard working grandma ? Spring also means, Mothers Day, and as usual there are lots of things going on to help you celebrate. For those of you with young grandchildren, keep an eye out for The Family Buzz magazine this March. It’s a new publication from the same people who produce Golden Times. The Family Buzz provides similar information to Golden Times, details of what’s going on and where to go, but aimed at families with children 16 and under. It’s certainly a great place to look for ideas to keep your grandchildren busy if, like me, you spend lots of time with them. The Family Buzz will be distributed throughout East Sussex and is also free. Have a great Easter and look out for the next edition of Golden Times in May,

ello again all, I do hope you’ve all enjoyed a great Christmas and New Year since my last column. I’m hugely relieved to see the weather getting warmer, the days getting longer and the spring flowers finally starting to appear. I’m not a fan of winter and I hate being cold, so it’s great to know that summer is on it’s way again. As much as I dislike the cold weather, being cooped up indoors is no fun either, so I do like to get out and enjoy some fresh air during winter too. The Editor has insisted upon putting in some photos of me enjoying a wonderful, sunny winters day at Camber Sands. I’m not looking my best in these pictures, but the Editor tells me it’s inspiring to see a grandma being active and having fun with her grandchildren!

Beach Belles Meet Every Monday The Beach Belles Ladies Club meets on a Monday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm at The Beach Tavern Public House in Pevensey Bay. Now with over 50 members from Pevensey Bay and the surrounding area, the aim of the club is provide a relaxing and friendly environment where ladies can have fun, make new friends and escape the pressures of daily life. We have ladies from age from fifty to eighty but we cater for anyone whatever your age or ability as our club motto is “STAY YOUNG AND HAVE FUN”. It may seem unusual to think that a ladies club is run in a public house and you may be sceptical of coming for that reason especially if you are on your own. Please be assured that it is really ‘home from home’ and we have our own part of the pub to ourselves. We are all made to feel very welcome by the tavern owners, Sonia and Stephan, who we are grateful for their support. Visit the Tavern website at www.thebeachtavern.co.uk the official home of The Beach Belles. Sonia’s Restaurant is a Gastro Pub located in the beautiful setting of historic Pevensey Bay and is less than a two minute walk from the sea front. Loved by the local community for their second to none steak & kidney pudding, roast potatoes and the fish of the day. As you can see by the picture, the desserts are gorgeously presented and taste as good as they look. As Sonia’s is part of the extremely popular and top rated Beach Tavern, on occasion your night might end with a show. To be more specific there are weekly live entertainment evenings which range from cabaret singers to top tribute acts. To avoid disappointment it is suggested that you book your table well in advance. Grant De Jongh “Diners Choice Magazine”
