ello and welcome to the latest issue of Golden Times Magazine. I'd like to start by saying how enjoyable it was to meet so many of our readers at the Over 50's Show held at Eastbourne's Winter Garden back in April. It was great to hear so many people saying they enjoyed reading the magazine, it makes all the hours spent cooped up in front of my computer putting Golden Times together worthwhile. Whilst we're always glad to hear praise, we're always open to criticism too and if any of our readers have a suggestion of how we could improve Golden Times, you're more than welcome to contact us (details below on the right) and let us know what you think. One of the things we have been asked many times is if it's possible to have Golden Times delivered directly, so we are now launching a subscription service, details of which can be found on page 38. As usual the magazine is full of useful local information, including events, clubs and local services. Thanks to all of you for your continuing support of both the magazine and the advertisers who enable us to bring it to you.

RAF Central Band Plays the De La Warr Pavilion This years Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Wings Appeal concert will be performed by a rare combination of two ensembles from the RAF Central Band. An eighteen piece Big Band the "Red, White & Blues" will join-up the six piece string "Salon Orchestra" to play a programme of old and new favourites. Our singer for the evening will be Molly Walsh who has recently come over from the USA to join her husband who just happens to be an RAF bandsman! Sgt Chris Quinn leads the Red White & Blues in playing a wide repertoire of music ranging from the ever popular swing and dance sounds of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton through to arrangements of the popular music of today. The leader of the orchestra is Chief Technician Barry Stringer who has been associated with it since he joined the RAF in 1986, his wife is also a member. The orchestra, that can trace its roots back to 1937, is in great demand and regularly performs at prestigious receptions, luncheons and dinners where a touch of pageantry is appropriate. The combination of a Big Band and the Salon Orchestra is exciting, interesting and very entertaining. There is no doubt that this concert will be a very fine musical experience performed by musicians of the highest order. So don't delay - buy your tickets today from the De La Warr Pavilion box office 01424 229111 or online at : www.dlwp.com

Frank’s Column - Rarotonga Much as I hate to spoil your day I just have to tell you that I am writing this column from the decadent comfort of my hotel in Thailand. I am ensconced in a nice little place in a resort called Karon Beach which is about 20 minutes from Phuket. To prevent any confusion(!) that last place is pronounced POO-KET OK! In my previous column I wrote of my none-too-sad farewell to Tonga, and that I was looking forward to spending time on the Cook Islands. Well, I'm happy to report that my expectations of the area were more than fulfilled. As my aircraft lost height on it's approach to Rarotonga International Airport I had the most amazing view of the whole of the island of Rarotonga. As I discovered shortly afterwards the island, which is almost circular, is less than 20 miles in circumference, and has only one made-up road which runs round the island very close to long stretches of beautiful sandy beaches. Clearing customs, and immigration after landing was quite painless and as the passengers entered the arrivals lounge we were greeted by a bloke in a bush hat, strumming on his guitar, and looking like a reject from Crocodile Dundee. He really was entertaining, and got all the holiday people into the right frame of mind so,"Good on Yer Cobber"!! I then went hunting for the accommodation bureau that all these small airports seem to have, and got myself fixed up with a small bungalow 50yds from the beach, and about 1 mile from the airport. After unpacking my kit, and trying out the bed for comfort for a few hours, I decided to take myself for

a stroll. When I came onto the road it didn't seem to matter whether I turned left or right so, turning left, I strolled about half a mile when I came across a sign saying Internet Cafe!! OMG it was amazing: It was a corrugated iron (wriggly tin) shed, and two young women were enthusiastically setting about it with brushes, and large tins of white paint........ Awesome. When they spotted me one of them downed tools, and invited me to use their facilities which consisted of a large battered table with two pristine computers, and a couple of rattan chairs. I just had to admire these two young, and eager entrepreneurs, and decided to e-mail my three nagging daughters to report my current whereabouts. Imagine my surprise when one of the girls asked me if I would like coffee: "Yes please I said" at which point she proceeded to fill this slightly battered kettle, and balance it delicately on a small gas ring. Anyway the end result was a lovely mug of real homemade coffee, and the firm conviction that these two young women were destined to go places. This experience on my first day on Rarotonga set the scene for the whole of my visit so I feel quite content to sign off now, and continue writing about my holiday here in my next column. So until then watch how you go,stay healthy, and enjoy living.

Don’t be afraid of the Mouse! A little computer knowledge can make a big difference. Local friendly tutor. Lessons in your own home. Emailing, shopping online, researching information, photos and more.....

Call now on 01424 400 190

Are you staring at a new computer which has found its way into your house? Did someone give you a gift that hasn’t been touched? Perhaps your old computer is still crying out to be used properly?! Either way it’s there and it’s eyeing you up suspiciously! When this happens we worry about how to use the thing properly, getting stuck and not recalling what to do or where to start. Firstly, concentrate on what interests you the most. There is no point learning things that you don’t need to. Make a list of what you want to do: email friends, do the grocery shopping, research hobbies? “But hold on!” (I hear you say) “What’s an email account? Is it safe to use my credit card online? Turn it on and off? I have to do that too??!!!” Fret not. As Silver Training’s East Sussex tutor I will set you up and guide you through what interests you the most with step by step lessons at home. We will plan your learning to suit what you wish to get out of your machine. I come to you so you don’t even have to leave the house! So put those excuses away…..and have a lesson to get started today! (we even throw in free training material in case you can’t remember what you have learned!) I am part of the UK’s largest network of home computer tutors, Silver Training, am fully background checked and already have many happy clients in the area! Call now on 01424 400 190 to book a lesson or visit www.silvertraining.co.uk Neil Duncan, Silver Training Tutor for East Sussex and surrounding area

Protect your assets

There is a question playing on the minds of many older people these days, along the lines of: “We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the local authority get it all?” If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home costs, on average, £36,000 a year. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care may seem a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

Married Couples: A legal trust arrangement within your will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose. Widowed/Single: The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now. “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children.” What would happen if your child/children were to experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? Did you know that capital gains tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right, call Collective Legal Solutions on 01424 854561 or 07718 155740 www.clshastings.co.uk

Missed us at the over 50's show ? Wiltshire Farm Foods recently sponsored the Sussex 50+ Show, if you missed us here’s a bit about us Maintaining independence is particularly important to Wiltshire Farm Foods- especially when it comes to mealtimes. Established for over 22 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods are here to make life easier whether it’s a few in the freezer to use when you’ve been out for the day, get home and don’t fancy cooking or for when you can’t get out and about as much as you used to but still want to eat well and look after yourself. Every dish comes as a single serving and we offer over 250 tasty recipes offering nutrition, value, and lots of flavour. From breakfast through to lunch, afternoon tea and an evening meal there are options available for any appetite at any time of day. Ingredients are selected from carefully approved suppliers and are then prepared by a team of nutritionists and award-winning chefs in our Wiltshire kitchens. Once cooked, the meals are placed into handy trays that fit easily into the freezer, then frozen as soon as they’re prepared to lock in the freshness. We aim to offer the best delivery service we can, delivering to all our areas at least twice a week. There is no commitment to buy every week, just as often or as little as you like. We are happy to place the meals in the freezer and you can pay by cash, cheque or card.

With the freezer stocked up, you know that a hot meal is only ever a few minutes away. Most dishes take 8-12 minutes in the microwave or 35 minutes in the oven. As they are cooked in their trays, there is no preparation, no pots and pans, just delicious meals that you can enjoy in your own time. Maintaining independence has never been easier. “What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility”. Leo Tolstoy This quote is all the more significant now as we anticipate living longer and consequently spending even more years together than our forebears did. There is much written about how to have the perfect relationship, but it is definitely not a “one size fits all”! Each relationship is as unique as the people in it, and there is no doubt about it, sustaining a long term, healthy and happy relationship is certainly a challenge! How many times (or for how many years) have you wanted your partner to change and thought if only he/she were different then everything would be fine? In my experience of counselling couples I would agree that those seeking to ‘change’ their partners are unlikely to have a promising outcome. Those that are prepared to change themselves are more likely to bring about a shift in the relationship which may or may not be beneficial depending on whichever outcome is sought. Jointly accountable, a flagging relationship cannot be ‘fixed’ by concentrating on only one member of the partnership. I recently read an article about relationships which proffered the view that we teach people how to treat us. This declaration got me to reflect on my own thoughts around this observation. I believe that we attract certain

If our self-worth is minimal then we may accept being treated badly because we do not feel we deserve any better. Understandably, I have found that there is an urgency for people in getting their relationship resolved as quickly as possible but progress can be slow, it has probably taken a few years to reach crisis point and it will take time to work through the difficulties experienced. Active for Life Anyone looking to prove the adage that staying active is the key to staying young should look no further than Eileen King. At 92, she still plays tennis regularly and claims to prefer singles over the more sedate doubles game. ‘It’s easier in a way,’ she says. ‘If there’s just me, I know I’ve got to get to the ball!’ Eileen and her regular playing partners – who range in age from early 60s to early 80s – meet at The Green Lawn Tennis Club, a few minutes’ walk from Eileen’s home in St Leonards on Sea several times a week. As well as tennis, Eileen is a keen gardener and also swims regularly at the local pool. ‘I do back stroke to help maintain the strength in my arms, which is good for my tennis,’ she explains. Between them, the King family boast some impressive sporting credentials. Eileen’s late husband played football and cricket until he was 55, while son Richard, who died in 2007, was a prominent presence on the club’s championship board, often in partnership with sister Sheila, herself a respected table tennis player on the local and national scene. ‘The rest of the family have always been more talented sports people than me,’ Eileen says. ‘I’ve never made it into any of the teams at The Green, but that’s not important to me. It’s the exercise and the social side I enjoy so much.’ To find out more about playing tennis at The Green, go to www.greenltc.co.uk or call the chairman Phillip Bebb on 01424 422025

Acupuncture is an ancient natural medicine system from the East. It is currently becoming more popular in the UK. This is because it works! Acupuncture works with the body as an integrated whole, and helps most types of disease. As well as being a powerful pain relief, it is also effective in improving most other functions of the body such as digestion, breathing, hormonal balance and also the mind and emotions. Once people try it they often use this powerful medicine as an energy-boost, "MOT" every so often to keep them in good health. Julia has thirteen years of experience working with acupuncture, and brings a caring and gentle approach to her work. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council.

Tricia’s Column

W

elcome to my latest column, I've finally persuaded our editor to change my photo as I looked like I was grimacing in the old one ! Mind you, I loathe having my photograph taken so I probably was wincing with pain having to sit in front of the camera. I seem to recall writing about saying goodbye to winter and hello to spring in my last column, well I certainly got that one wrong didn't I ? The winter seems determined to hang on for as long as it can this year, we've had everything from a warm sunny day to downpours of hailstones this week. Who knows what May and June will bring, hopefully sunhats and ice cream, but would anyone be surprised if it snowed again or rained frogs ? May and June are very busy months in my family as it seems to be everyone's birthday! It's many happy returns to five of my grandchildren, my dad, my sister and in the middle of it all, me. So if you see someone walking out of W H Smiths with armfuls of birthday cards, it might be me... It's quite a special year as my youngest granddaughter is about to have her first birthday and my oldest grandson his 18th, by the time you read my next column I will probably be 2 stone heavier after overdosing on birthday cake. The fire brigade may need to be on hand to put out all the candles on my cake this year.

For those of you not attending a birthday party every weekend, there are plenty of other events going on as the summer (finally!) arrives. On these pages you'll see details of the Heathfeild Show, special offers at the Kent & East Sussex Railway, interesting days out at Sharnfold Farm and Yesterdays World. All of these are great ideas for days out with the kids if you're on child-minding duty during half term this May. You'll also see below that we're offering readers the chance to win pairs of tickets to see the "Aquaria" show at the White Rock Theatre. From what I've read about the show it sounds like it will be spectacular so make sure you enter that competition. There's more information about the show on the inside back cover of this issue too. I'll be off to the White Rock Theatre in the next few days to see the sixties musical "Carnaby Street" so that myself and my husband can remember the days when we used to totter about on his scooter. I only hope it doesn't give him any funny ideas about reliving his youth, I doubt they make scooters with stabilisers.

ia

That's it from me this time around, I shall be back in July with more musings.

Finalists in the Farmers’ Guardian Favourite Show The Heathfield & District Agricultural Show is proud to be able to announce that they have made it through to the finals of the Farmers’ Guardian Favourite Show competition 2013. The competition was eventually won by the Turiff show in Aberdeenshire, but the Heathfield Show was one of just 8 finalists chosen from 90 competing shows. The Farmers’ Guardian report that “The finalists represent a great mix of shows which each have their own challenges, but are working hard within their communities and remaining loyal to their roots” Show Secretary, Nicola Magill, says, “It is a true reflection of the dedication of all the volunteers who help organise the Show that we have been recognised as being worthy contenders for this award. For 364 days a year the planning takes place and culminates in one day of Show activity this year, show day is the 25th May. I would like to congratulate all who are involved in the running of the Show.” We are pleased to be able to say that we have already had good entries in all classes across the board. Everything is shaping up to enable some competitive entertainment on Show day – 25th May 2013 - across all the sections. LIME CROSS NURSERY ~ JOLLY SERIOUS ABOUT GARDENING This is coming up to the peak growing season for many of your shrubs which, if not attended to, can become straggly very quickly. Conifers and holly especially will need cutting to keep their shape. If your conifers are looking untidy, now is the ideal time to clip them, especially established conifer hedges. Conifers at Lime Cross Nursery are our speciality; please ask our experts for advice if unsure.

arranging. Colours range from pale pastels to bright reds, mauves and blues. Plant your seedlings at the base of trellis, netting or a willow support, pinching them out just above a leaf joint when they are about 4 inches high to encourage side shoots. Water well during dry spells and feed occasionally with liquid fertiliser. Pick the blooms regularly to promote further flowering.

Lawns will require maintenance now with feed and weed treatments and regular mowing to improve density and help prevent further weeds and moss invading. Your lawn will benefit from fertilising, top-dressing, aerating and scarifying. Apply a 4-in-1 treatment to improve the condition and enjoy a lawn your neighbours will envy!

Check your roses for pests and diseases and treat if required with a systemic insecticide and fungicide, being careful to avoid use when bees are actively foraging as the chemical may harm them. Tie in new growth of climbing roses to keep them tidy and to enjoy bigger blooms from a hybrid tea variety, keep the main bud but remove secondary buds

Keep on top of weeds by hoeing your borders, and protect your fruit trees and bushes from greedy garden birds with netting. Continue to feed the birds - Lime Cross supply a range of feed for many different birds.

Replace spring bedding in your borders and containers with summer bedding but please ensure you acclimatise them under a cold frame or similar before planting out. Remember to water throughout the summer, giving them a liquid feed once a week, dead-heading them regularly to enjoy colourful blooms all season, and don’t forget your hanging baskets and containers!

Gradually harden off seedlings and half hardy annuals such as lobelia, petunia and antirrhinum, before planting out and sow hardy annuals now including love-in-a-mist, sunflower, cornflower, and biennials for next summer - sweet william and wallflower -to name a few. Plant some ‘speedy veg’ which will yield results in a matter of weeks and are ideal for summer salads and the BBQ season. The range includes baby carrot, kohl rabi, leek, beetroot, radish and lettuce – check out the seed range at Lime Cross! Sweet peas are a cottage garden favourite, an easy to grow climber with heady scented blooms ideal for cutting and

There is still plenty of time to plant trees and fruit – you will be able to buy your trees in leaf in containers so you will know the exact flower colour you are buying. Don’t forget to support the National Garden Scheme with their thousands of wonderful and inspiring gardens open for charity – pick up your yellow booklet from Lime Cross and other outlets today and start visiting! Delivering Golden Times to you Have you ever wondered how Golden Times finds it's way to your local pickup point ? Well, every two months, thousands of copies are loaded into two of Nissan's finest, both supplied by St Leonards Motors. As well as providing us with his regular column, Frank also helps with delivery in his Nissan Note and our Qashqai+2 leads a double life as both a 7 seater family car and a 2 seat delivery van depending on how the interior is configured. Both the Note and the Qashqai+2 (pictured below) are built in the UK at Nissan's Sunderland factory and both have proven to be faultlessly reliable, economical and comfortable. Both cars offer a surprising (for their respective sizes) amount of space, and in each case, the load area is flat and easy to access making them an ideal choice to help us get Golden Times to wherever you are.

Our relationship with SLM dates back to before Golden Times was first published. The current vehicles are the 2nd of each model we've purchased from SLM, and, initially we just found them both to be great cars. It wasn't until Golden Times launched in 2011, however, that we realised quite how versatile and practical they were. As we enjoyed friendly, helpful and efficient service from SLM with the first cars we purchased from them, we didn't hesitate to return when we decided to trade in our cars this year. If you're thinking about changing your car, we would happily recommend popping along to their showroom in Church Wood Drive, St Leonards to take a look at their wide range of new and used vehicles. Ask Eve Eve Peacock is an internationally renowned Clairvoyant Tarot Reader and Palmist and has appeared many times on TV inc. ITV's "This Morning" She works from her home in Eastbourne, you can contact Eve on: 01323 643220 If you have a problem for Eve please email info@evepeacock-visions.co.uk with a photo and your d.o.b. Your full name and photo will not appear in the column. Please make your question short and concise. Problems can only be answered on this page. If you bring a copy of this Golden Times magazine for your reading at Visions you will get 10% off the cost. Hi Eve This might not sound serious but I have a friend that I have known for nearly 50 years since we were kids. We had a silly argument 6 weeks ago and she has stopped talking to me. She won't answer my calls or reply to texts. I have even sent her a bunch of flowers with no response. I don't even feel it's my fault. I'm a Gemini and she is Cancer. Marion St Leonards Dear Marion I think for a start you should take a step back and not contact her for the time being. In my Tarot cards this doesn't seem like a one-off argument and I feel a build up of misunderstandings and tension for a while now. I feel your friend also has some personal issues in her own life that she is dealing with. Unfortunately it looks like its going to take a bit of time to get this friendship back to where it was, maybe even 18 months. Gemini's are solid loyal friends but can be a bit tactless sometimes! Cancer female is loving and nurturing but super-sensitive. Give her some space and hopefully all your past history and good memories will help you to re-connect when its the right time.

Dear Eve After our beautiful mobile home on a Park no longer became suitable in the really bad weather my husband and I made a difficult decision and moved into a lovely old cottage. I have two grandchildren Jack 4 and Elise 7 who stay regularly. We are renting it but its the sort of house I have always dreamed of living in. There have been a few things happening, such as things" going bump in the night" and a very cold spot in the 4th bedroom that my husband uses as his study. I'm not the tiny bit sensitive or intuitive but I feel quite uncomfortable at times especially if I'm on my own at night. The children haven't said much but I'm concerned for them if there is anything here. How can you tell if a house is haunted? I'm a Taurus and my husband Daniel is a Scorpio. Jane, Northiam Dear Jane I have really tried to "tune in" here as I know this can be a very upsetting experience for people especially as a lot of people will be dismissive when you try and tell them your concerns. Even though the kids aren't saying much I feel Elise in particular is very sensitive. Yes having done a bit of "ghost-busting" in my time there are definitely properties which are haunted, though for me it can often be a very lovely and healing experience of sending souls into the light. I feel sometimes we share our space with spirits and mostly it is ok. I have found that a classic sign of a problem with an energy is a lot of things going wrong, specifically the electricity. Also post can go missing, phones go out of order, generally a lot of delays and frustrations... There are people who will do house clearing as its called but to be honest your house has so much history it would be a big job. The only spirit I pick up on is a little girl who may be mischievous and move things around but would not do you any harm. I also think you are dealing with a negative ley line under the property. I will be honest with you Jane this is going to take some work and sometimes you can never heal a house.

Very much alive and kicking A short story collection that’s like a famous box of chocolates for Michael Fleming - "TWISTS IN THE TALES" by the We’re Not Dead Yet Writers Published by My Voice Publishing £6.99. Available on Amazon. Just like that box of chocolates you’ve not tried before, new book Twists in the Tales, a collection of 16 short stories, is full of surprises and treats. The nine authors from the Eastbourne group, We’re Not Dead Yet Writers, are all over 60 but very much alive and kicking. Twists In The Tales sets out to appeal to a range of emotions. Here you’ll find many a chuckle, thrill and twist. But also to be found is charm and poignancy. As with all twist in the tail stories, the reviewer bears a responsibility not to give too much away. But this collection has many qualities which can be discussed without straying into plot revelation. Take for example, Christine Dudley’s story, Maurice And The Magic Book. The narrator in this story is a cat: not an unprecedented approach, but handled here very skillfully, with wit and wisdom. It has a very different pitch from Christine’s second story, The Café, which is an intriguing tale of loss and happenstance. Its well-crafted central character, the sexy Sylvia, will certainly arouse the interest of many a reader.

Creative Writing Corner Since we printed our first short story back in January, the submissions from our readers have continued to flood in, it's a shame we've only got room for one in this issue! Don't despair if you've sent something in which hasn't been featured, we will try to print as many as we can! So, if you have written something around 400-500 words in length, and you'd like to see it in print, send it in! Please email submissions to jason@goldentimes. co.uk or post them to us at 78 Elphinstone Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 2BS.

"What the Dickens?" by Marylyn Palmer

Sandra plonked herself beside her husband on the sofa. 'You haven't forgotten it's my birthday on Friday, have you,' she said. Ben, engrossed in a football match, didn't respond. 'I might as well talk to myself,' Sandra said, jabbing him in the side. 'Ow, that hurt,' Ben said. 'Got your attention at last,' Sandra said. 'Sorry, ' Ben said, one eye still on the TV screen. It's just that this is an important game. 'Did you want something?' 'Sandra sighed. I just wanted to remind you that it's my birthday in two days time and I was thinking in case you are stuck for ideas that I would really like something by the great Dickens.' 'You sure? Ben gave her a quizzical look. 'Not the most exciting present to ask for, but if it's what you really want.' 'Yes I am sure, ' Sandra said. They shouldn't be that hard to find if that's what you're worried about.'

30

I chuckled throughout A Village Feud written by Francis Wait. This filmic tale is set in rural Ireland many decades ago and the author has great fun exploring issues of allegiance and belief when a newcomer to the village draws the community away from the local church. Those who admire John Ford’s classic movie, The Quiet Man, will find this story very much to their liking. Heather Flood’s tender tale, The Christmas Tree, handles the difficult subject of death in a clever and mature way. But it was her playful second offering, Heaven Or Hell? which I preferred. The use of present tense gives the story an urgency which pulls the reader along its witty passages to the look-out-hereI-come ending. Other clever twists in the tail are to be found in Tony Flood’s No Brainer and Elizabeth Gibbs’s Naughty But Nice, both of which will have you chuckling as well as guessing. There is not enough space to review all the stories individually: suffice to say that if you want a short story collection that you can read through in one sitting, or dip into when the mood takes, to be amused and intrigued, Twists In The Tales will serve you well. It is available from April 14th on Amazon as both a paperback and an e-version.

'No, I'm sure I will be able to get hold of them, but where do you intend to put them?' Ben said, turning his attention back to the match. 'There's plenty of room in the dining room for them,' Sandra said. 'Anyway what do you mean about my present not being exciting - least my hobby is more interesting than watching grown men run round a field,' I'll have you know these are skilled athletes', Ben said indignantly. 'Just look at the way Beckham dribbles that ball.' Sandra shook her head in disbelief. Deciding not to mention that he hadn't thought his three-month old Grandson had been so wonderful when he had dribbled all over him yesterday. 'So you are okay to get my present then', Sandra said, getting up from the settee. 'Yes, fine just leave it to me', Ben said. But remind me – when is your birthday?' Sandra picked up a cushion and threw it him. "Goal!", Sandra called out as it hit him on the head. 'Foul more like it,' Ben said grinning at her. ***** Sandra's birthday arrived. 'Here you are,' Ben said, staggering into the room with a large crate. 'Happy Birthday'. A huge grin spread over Sandra's face. He'd remembered! In fact, he had outdone himself. He had actually bought her a whole collection of books! Eagerly she lifted the lid and peered in. 'What the....' 'Ben!,' she wailed. 'What,' he said frowning. 'It's what you asked for.' 'No, Ben!' Sandra said. 'I just knew you weren't listening. I asked for some books by the Great Charles Dickens, not a crate of Chickens!'

Colour your wardrobe As summer comes along we love the idea of wearing bright colours to enhance our mood. The shops are full of brilliant shades of yellow, red, orange and blue. But how do you know which colours go together and which will clash. Before making any expensive mistakes, here are a few tips to help you choose the right colours for you. Coordinating your wardrobe becomes simple when you understand that colours have relationships which either strengthen or soften each other. The "Colour Wheel" is a great way to visualise this. As we all know, the three primary colours are red, blue and yellow and they mix together to form all other colours. The secondary colours are orange, violet and green. Colours that sit side-by-side on the colour wheel are considered to be "Analogous" or similar to one another. Analogous colours tend to work well with one another and often have the effect of subduing each colour slightly which makes the overall effect more "tonal". Try blending varying shades of the same or similar colours to create an elegant look. Colours that are positioned opposite one another are considered to be "Complimentary" colours. Blue is

Colours are considered "cool" or "warm" and you will find that one temperature will suit you more than the other. Your best friend is the mirror. Try lots of shades and notice the effect it has on your face. One colour will make you look luminous whilst another might have a negative effect. Make sure you have a drawer full of scarves that really suit you, then you'll always have the solution to hand. When in doubt, let nature be your guide. We all love to see a rainbow and can see the way colours blend into each other. Notice how different shades of green or blue work together. And never forget that neutrals (which are not actually colours) are the basis of any wardrobe. White, black, grey, cream, or beige will work with almost any colour and add glamour to any outfit. Happy colouring! Michèle

Complimentary to orange. Violet is Complimentary to yellow. Red is Complimentary to green. The colours "compliment" each other and make both seem bolder. You do need to be careful to consider tone when putting complimentary colours together. Whilst bright red and deep green do work together, you risk looking like the Christmas Elf if you go overboard! A hunter green and burgundy will look much more considered. Use complimentary colours to accent your outfit - a yellow shirt under a classic blue suit or a plum scarf on a lime green cardigan.

1066 Jazz Club

The 1066 Jazz Club has had great success with recent themed party evenings. The Mardi Gras night saw revellers wearing masks, beads, feathers and carnival costume. Numbers were swelled by an organised coach party from the Tenterden Active Retirement Association, who enjoyed it so much that they have booked another visit to the club in early June This was followed up by the Easter Parade on Good Friday when many of the participants in the customary Umbrella Parade took to the floor in their Easter bonnets. The club's next theme night is on Friday the 17th of May. This will be a 1940’s Jump and Jive event with Jeremy Hugget’s Harlem Five providing the music and a cabaret exhibition by The Cinque Ports Lindy Hop Dancers. Try not to miss it. Another date not be missed is the 7th of June when the band is Graeme Hewitt’s High Society Jazz Band featuring the exciting trumpet playing of Denny Ilett This club has one of the best venues in the UK, with a licensed bar, reasonably priced meals served to your table, a large dance floor and plenty of parking. The Golden Times team visited the Three Oaks pub on an unseasonably chilly day this April. It's always a treat to escape the office for lunch, and a trip out to this cosy village pub was ideal. The interior of the Three Oaks is traditional and cosy, if the sun's not shining it's a perfect place to settle in and enjoy some good food. For the warmer months however, The Three Oaks boasts a large outside seating area where you can sit and watch the world go by. With snow in the air during our visit, we settled down close to the fire to peruse the menu and enjoy a very well-kept pint of ale. The Three Oaks serves food from midday until 9pm, 7 days a week. They offer a varied lunchtime menu between 12 and 2pm with two courses being excellent value at just £6.75. As we both had quite a healthy appetite, we plumped for meals from the specials board. We were warned by the landlord Nigel, that the portions were large, and he certainly wasn't joking! You wont leave the Three Oaks feeling hungry that's for sure. The food delivered in terms of quality as well as quantity, if you're a fan of hearty, home-cooked food at good value prices, you won't be disappointed by a visit to The Three Oaks.

Jacobs Ladder Delicious, slow cooked short rib of beef with celeriac mash. Ingredients (Serves 4) 1 beef short rib rack (approx 1.2kg) 400ml red wine. 2 bulbs of garlic. 1 celeriac (approx 350g) 800g Maris Piper potatoes Salt, pepper and balsamic vinegar 150ml double cream 1tbsp butter

.

SPECIAL READER OFFER Whites Seafood & Steak Bar is pleased to offer 10% off main meals, MondayThursday, (Excluding bank-holidays) to all customers bringing this coupon with them to the restaurant

Cooking Instructions (cooking time approximately 6 hours) Season the meat on all sides with salt & pepper, splash on a small amount of balsamic vinegar. Place on a roasting tray and cook at 220 degrees C for half an hour. Remove the beef from the tray and line it with the garlic cloves. Return the beef onto the bed of garlic, add the red wine. Reduce the heat to 150 degrees, cover the beef with foil and return to the oven for four and a half hours. Remove the meat from the oven and pour off most of the wine/juices into a pan and return the beef to the oven

for a further half an hour. Heat the reserved juices from the meat in a pan until reduced by around half. You may wish to thicken with a little butter & flour but the aim is to reduce the liquid down to a very intense, meaty sauce. To prepare the mash, peel and dice the celeriac and potatoes and place each into separate pans of water. Bring both to the boil and simmer the celeriac for around 15-20 minutes and the potatoes for around 1215 minutes. Drain both pans well, place both celeriac and potatoes

into one pan and place back over the heat briefly to drive off any excess moisture. Mash the celeriac and potatoes together, then beat in the butter and cream until well combined, season to taste with salt and pepper. When removing the beef from the oven, it should be rested for around 10 minutes before slicing. Serve on a bed of mash, drizzled with the sauce. Accompany with fresh vegetables and some of the roasted garlic if you wish.

Dancing Decades Ragtime to Swing 1920 to 1950

Don Bray took the U3A on an unforgettable walk down ‘Nostalgia Lane’ with his talk on Ragtime, Jazz and Swing. Did you know that ‘rag time’ was started by Scott Joplin, an African-American railroad labourer? After quitting his job he went to Chicago for the ‘World’s Fair of 1893, and this single event made ragtime a national craze by 1897. In 1898 Scott Joplin, introduced ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and the rest, as they say, is history. By the 1920’s great social changes were happening, especially for women with Rag Time and Jazz dominating the world’s music scene. Women bobbed their hair; hemlines came up to the knee. The women fell into one of three sets: Flappers, who could best be described as ‘good time girls, Sweet Young Things who were a more up market version of the Flappers, and Vamps who were older, curvier and probably married. The Grand Hotel hosted the first dance band in 1922; Henry Hall’s BBC Dance Orchestra played from the 1920s right through to the 1960s . Amongst the many contributors to the social music scene were Denny Dennis from Derby who first sang with the Roy Fox band in 1937; Vera Lynn in the 1930s and ‘40s and in 1943 she recorded ‘You’ll Never Know’. Dance bands throughout the 1930s and ‘40s generally performed at hotels and show bands like Jack Hilton and Billy Cotton would tour, filling every seat. Undeniably nostalgic halcyon days of the dancing decades, but it conjures up a bygone era of glamour, sophistication, romance attainable by all, even if it was only on a Saturday! Monthly meetings of the U3A take place at St Peter’s Community Centre (Old Town) Bexhill (usually fourth Monday in the month), 9.30 for 10.15 start until midday, (coffee served between 9.3010.00) For further details please telephone : 01424 752681
