ello and welcome to the November/December edition of Golden Times, which sees us entering our 4th year of publication! It seems like no time at all since we first talked about putting together Golden Times and tentatively launched the magazine into an unsuspecting world. The positive feedback from our readers and support from our advertisers since 2011 has been consistently brilliant, as has the assistance of the Hastings Printing Company, who print and package the magazines. Special mention should also be given to our contributing columnists and the interesting, informative pieces which have delighted our readers for so long. All of these ingredients are crucial to the magazine, and we're all looking forward to continuing to mix them together to produce the magazine for many more years to come. As well as being our 3rd Birthday issue, this is also our "festive" issue, covering all the seasonal, wintery delights that East Sussex has to offer. I'm sure there will be something interesting for every reader to discover. Everyone at Golden Times would like to wish all of our readers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! See you in 2015! Golden Times Cover Photography by Golden Times Editor Jason Stubbs As this is the last issue of Golden Times for 2014, I thought I'd take a look back over the cover images we've used this year. Regular readers will recall a similar piece in the November edition from 2013, this seemed to be popular so we thought we'd reprise the idea this time around. The photo from January 2014 is of Michelham Priory in Upper Dicker near Hailsham. It's a delightful place to visit and boasts the longest water filled moat in England apparently! We were lucky to visit on an exceptionally sunny day during December 2013 so my shot of the Priory was lit by some wonderful winter sunlight. The shots we used in March and September were both taken on the same day in November 2013. I waited for a clear, sunny day, packed my camera in a padded rucksack and spent the day wandering around the Seven Sisters Country Park snapping as I went. March shows a view of the chalk cliffs as they dip down into Cuckmere Haven and September depicts the lighthouse about four miles East at the foot of Beachy Head. Both of these locations seem to be very popular with photographers so doubtless many of our readers will have taken very similar pictures themselves! May and July saw us use photos I'd managed to grab by chance while out

delivering Golden Times. I often have a camera handy when I'm on our distribution runs as we get to visit so many eyecatching locations. You just never know when and where something will catch your eye! The Tulips and cornflowers are in the gardens around Falaise Fitness Centre above the White Rock area of Hastings. They always seem to have a spectacular floral display. I found "Hard Graft", which graced the July 2014 cover, on the eastern outskirts of Eastbourne beach close to Princes Park. So, what can you expect to see on our covers in 2015 then ? Well, I'd like to throw that one open to our readers. If there are any budding photographers out there who would like to see their work featured on our covers next year, we'd love to make that happen. Obviously we're looking for high quality images with a seasonal theme which showcase our distribution area along the East Sussex coast. When thinking about composing a shot, bear in mind that around a 5th of the top of the image will be covered by the Golden Times logo. If you think you've captured a slice of East Sussex that would be suitable, please send a low resolution version (initially) to jason@goldentimes.co.uk I am very much looking forward to seeing how talented our readers are.

Frank’s Travels
In the May issue of the magazine I described my arrival in Singapore from Auckland, and how my trip across the island to that small hotel on Orchard Road inspired me to take a stroll back down memory lane. I started my journey back in dear old Blighty, and described doing a Winter Warfare course on the Brecon Beacons before getting issued with jungle greens, and sent to Malaya. How perverse was that!? I described my journey on the troopship with the stops at Port Said, Aden, Colombo and now here I was sailing into Singapore Harbour. Disembarking was a bit of a blur as all and sundry were being harassed by troop-deck Sergeants, and personnel from Movement Control but out of the chaos order prevailed, and I found myself along with my troop on the way to Nee Soon transit camp. We weren't there very long before we found ourselves in the back of a truck heading up the Bukit Timah highway in the direction of the Causeway which linked the island of Singapore to the Malayan mainland at Johore Bahru. From there we headed inland towards the Jungle Warfare School at Kota Tinggi where we went through the mill for a number of weeks before finally moving up-country to join our unit. An interesting thing about life at that time which all you old soldiers will remember is that when you moved anywhere you carried all your worldly possessions on your back plus personal weapon, and frequently an issue of ammunition. Having spent four months on operations a number of us were granted two weeks R&R back down in Singapore.
We traveled south by train from Kuala Lumpur, and handed our weapons into the armoury in Singapore railway station. From there we made tracks for the very welcoming atmosphere of the Union Jack Club. This place was all a complete mystery to me but fortunately there was a number of"Old Sweats" mixed in with us and they were more than ready to lead us new boys astray. Our first port of call was the Britannia Club where Tiger tops was the order of the day. Next stop was the highly recommended Stamford Cafe where a really top-notch mixed grill cost a mere three straits dollars. Right then: Here I was suitably fed, and watered and the night was young so I decided that the best thing to do would be to set a precedent for the rest of my time here which I duly did!! And now here I was nearly fifty years later in my hotel reminiscing about a most wonderful period of my life in a city which had changed out of all recognition. The Singapore of my youth has gone forever to be replaced by a vibrant modern city which can set an example in so many ways to many of the places I have visited in my travels. Before I close this column please accept my apologies for any misspellings. Just put it down to senior moments.
Until the next time stay healthy, watch how you go, and enjoy living. nk

The Golden Age of Cruising Experiencing a transatlantic voyage on Queen Mary 2 is to experience the golden age of traditional cruising! We were escorted out of New York by a NYPD helicopter, with the pilot somewhat “showboating” his skill by flying circles around the ship and getting so close you could almost make out his face. As we approached the Verrazano Narrows bridge we thought that the flying display would end there, but oh no, straight under the bridge he went alongside us before turning and heading for home.
recommend and they are very rarely wrong! The food is always well presented (start the meal with your eyes!) and tastes as good as it looks. Our first full day at sea was a gloriously sunny day, so that was me (Trevor) off to the sun deck with a book and sun tan lotion, with Sue saying she would join me shortly. My relaxation on the sun lounger with my book lasted a whole 10 minutes before Sue came up to inform me that we were going to the dance class in the Queens room.
QM2 is a beautiful ship, a true ocean liner, with bows made to cut effortlessly through the Atlantic waters, and she is just as beautiful on the inside, with the marvellous Grand Lobby and Queens Room housing the largest ballroom at sea. For this trip we had booked an inside stateroom which was spacious with good storage, however we were not intending on spending too much time in our stateroom due to the numerous and varied activities on board, all of which we could find out about in the Daily Programme (information sheets) delivered to our stateroom at night for the following day.
The rest of the days at sea were more than entertaining for us, even with 6 whole days at sea we still didn’t do all that we wanted to. The night time entertainment always provides choice with west end style shows, ballroom dances, music lounges, the pub or disco providing a varied venue selection. Dress in the evening is either formal (black tie on two nights); getting the glad rags on is part of the whole transatlantic experience for us; or informal. Trevor & Sue on Deck. To find out more, please see page 31
After leaving New York we decided to take a tour of the ship to familiarise ourselves with where everything was, aided by a mini deck plan from our stateroom and the various information deck plans around the ship. This tour helped us make up our minds on what we wanted to do whilst on the voyage. For anyone who has not travelled on QM2 the two ‘not to miss’ events are the Planetarium and the white gloved afternoon tea in the Queens Room. For dinner we dined in the main restaurant at a table for two, looked after by two lovely waiters and a very knowledgeable sommelier. We always ask the waiters what dish they

QM2 was a great experience, so much so, that Sue will be taking her mother on this great ship for a short cruise next month!
If you are interested to find out more about cruising you can call either of us (Trevor or Sue) at GoCruise on 01323 731590 or visit our website www.gocruise.co.uk/trevorandsue and drop us a line or two. It really is a good idea to buy a cruise holiday from an expert in the industry and Sue and I have years of experience and a wealth of knowledge we love to share. All bookings with us carry full ABTA and ATOL bonding for your financial protection and peace of mind. We are also independent and will always offer the cruise that we believe to be right for you, so that your experience is the best it can be.

Julia Meanwell - Live your dreams Do you have a dream? Could it be that you’ve always had a hankering to write a book, run a marathon, or take up bungee jumping? If you think you’re too long in the tooth for such exploits then maybe you’d better think again. You may be surprised to hear that Bertha Wood, born in 1905, had her first book, Fresh Air and Fun, the story of a Blackpool Holiday Camp published on her 100th birthday on June 20, 2005. The oldest woman to complete a marathon was Gladys Burrill from Hawaii, who was 92 years old. She power walked and jogged the Honolulu Marathon in nine hours 53 minutes, earning herself the nickname “Gladyator”. She had run her ‘first’ marathon aged 86. South African Mohr Keet became the oldest bungee jumper ever at 96. I could mention so many more here but there isn’t space to include all of the people I found when researching. I don’t know about you but I am really inspired when I read examples of people who have started very late in life but have still been able to realise their dreams. It offers me hope and encouragement to see that it’s never too late to pursue our dreams at whatever stage of life we are in. We have no sell by or best before date; the only limits we have are the ones we place upon ourselves. In fact, perhaps it is because we have more life experience that we can identify more easily what it is that we dream of doing. Although some of the people mentioned are able to

Benenden Hospital and Benenden Health have joined forces with a UK charity to collect second hand glasses – which will be sent to people overseas who cannot afford to buy them. Donations of spectacles are to be collected between now and Christmas, which will then be sent inside a shipping container to The Gambia at the beginning of next year. Volunteers with the UK registered charity BACE, Building and Assisting Communities with Education, will then give the glasses to representatives from the National Eye Health Programme, who will distribute pairs to needy people in the most impoverished and rural parts of the country. Glasses can be dropped off at Benenden Hospital, in Goddard’s Green Road, Benenden, Cranbrook – into a collection bin in the main reception area. There are also collection bins at Costa, Tenterden High Street, Wilson Wilson and Hancock opticians, in Tenterden High Street and at the Kentish Express newspaper office in North Street, Ashford. Benenden Hospital is supporting the costs of the shipping container which will take the glasses from the UK to The Gambia. The hospital has also donated old and redundant medical equipment which BACE will use in its new health clinic in a village called Bonsa. The clinic is to be officially opened in November. The charity set up and runs a nursery school there too, along with a feeding programme, which aims to ensure that the school children have at least one nutritious meal a day. School equipment will go into the container too. For more information on donating glasses please contact Jane Barlow at benenden hospital on 01580 240 333 or by emailing jane.barlow@benenden.org.uk

Are you worried about having to sell your home to pay for care costs? Over 50,000 homes were sold in the last year for that reason but it can be easily avoided.
Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?
If you have to go into care you may be "means tested" by your Local Authority to assess your ability to pay for that care. Under current rules, if you have assets that total more than £23,250 (in England), which could include the value of your home, you will be required to fund your care in full – a care home will cost £500-£800 a week or more. LATER LIFE FINANCIAL PLANNING CONSIDERATION
This year we have produced a number of articles relating to the provision of later life care and the all-important funding of care whether in your own home or in a care home environment. This is just part of the planning that should be considered in later life. We at Ethos Financial Planners have a later life planning checklist as follows. • An up to date Will. • Lasting Power of Attorney covering welfare and finances. • Create an estate plan to reduce if not completely mitigate any potential Inheritance Tax (IHT) that would be payable by your Executors. Remember IHT is payable on assets passing to family (other than gifts to a spouse or a registered charity) at a rate of 40% on estates in excess of the nil rate band allowance. IHT may be reduced by gifting assets into a family trust but in order to save tax this often requires the person making the gift to survive 7 years and to forgo access to the capital in the trust. This may prove a stumbling block as many of our clients are reluctant to lose access to funds concerned with funding future care. However, we will discuss with clients IHT planning solutions that would potentially be successful after just 2 years and will offer future access to capital if later life care is needed. We at Ethos are here to help you explore all the possibilities open to you. For further information please feel free to call me on 01293 449860.

FASHION FOR THE FESTIVITIES
You’ve stuffed the turkey, peeled the potatoes, wrapped the presents, and the table is looking stunningly festive….But what about you? What on earth do you wear on Christmas Day? And Christmas Eve? The shops are full of party dresses but most of us will spend Christmas cooking and eating at home, not partying the night away. Michèle Duke gives you practical advice on how to look gorgeous throughout the festive season…. Weddings, funerals, bir thdays – everyone knows what to wear for most special occasions but Christmas is the one day of the year that is really tricky, especially for women. You spend most of the day slaving over the stove, clearing up after the guests, playing games with the grandchildren and generally keeping everyone happy. It’s easy to forget about yourself, but the pressure is on to look fabulous too. Take a tip from me and prepare your outfits for the entire period a week before Christmas. Put everything you need together in the wardrobe so you have no decisions to make when the corks are popping! Christmas Eve is a great opportunity to reflect the festive season. Red, green, and gold are the seasonal colours. Visits to relatives or drinks with friends offer an opportunity to dress up - try an elegant black dress with a gorgeous silk scarf or velvet cord trousers and a tunic top. Pearls, diamonds – this is the time to “bling it up”. If you’re spending the evening in the pub you can glam up your normal outfit with a bit of sparkle. Avoid all-over “glitzy” tops and just add a cardigan with a sprinkle of sequins or a perhaps a faux fur collar. Christmas Day is more difficult. Comfort is paramount; it’s not the day for too much glamour but you don’t need to sacrifice style. With some planning you can look fabulous without too much effort.
A late breakfast and opening presents demands either Christmas PJs or comfy trousers and an oversized sweater. Do your make-up and hair before you start cooking because you are unlikely to have time once the heat is on. Lay out your “lunch outfit” on the bed. When the meal is prepared, there is just time to run upstairs and change as the drinks are being poured. Avoid heavy sweaters – it can get pretty warm eating all that food – and anything tight is obviously a bad idea. This is one day when elasticated waistbands are actually in fashion – everybody is wearing them! The after-lunch stroll is the time for chunky knits and jeans. A grey cardigan is brightened with a red handbag and scarf. Or try a multicolour, oversized sweater with jeans and wellies. Visiting church is the time for a more formal coat with your new gloves and scarf. When it’s all over, you can cosy up by the fire in the Christmas “Onesie” the kids decided was the perfect gift for you! (It’s the only day you’ll ever hear me say that!) My best tip? Relax, don’t worry about the bread sauce, take time to enjoy friends and family and enjoy a wonderful Christmas. Whatever you wear, nothing is more important than a smile. For more tips and lots of pictures, visit my website at www.micheleduke.co.uk/christmas A very Happy Christmas to you all

Tricia’s Column ell it's November once again and by the time you read this, doubtless Christmas Crackers, Reindeer shaped chocolates, Turkeys, Cranberry Sauce and wrapping paper will have been on special offer in every supermarket for at least a month and a half! The TV will be showing endless adverts featuring something heartwarming covered in snow and we'll all be wondering how quickly we can get it all over and nip off somewhere warm for a couple of weeks to recover.
put on their Christmas list. It's only a matter of time before one of them emails me a link to their Amazon Wish List rather than hands me a hand written note to pop up the chimney! I will be very interested this E! year to see how the two 8 year E FR olds react to talk of Father Christmas. It might be the last year they have that magical belief in their hearts. We might have to threaten them with the disapproval of someone else by next Autumn. I wonder if One Direction have a naughty list to put them on ? /14

Enjoy the madness the festive season brings and don't deny yourself an extra roast potato, helping of Christmas Cake, or another glass of bubbly on New Years Eve, you only live once! Gardening tips for late autumn early winter by Phoenix Gardening. Now is when we need to think ahead to next spring. So its late autumn, finish planting any spring bulbs as soon as you can, plant any bare root or balled trees and shrubs. It’s also a good time to take any hardwood cuttings and lift any vulnerable plants, like non hardy Chrysanthemums, we can also protect delphiniums and Lupins from slugs with a layer of coarse grit round the base. As we move into early winter dig over that vegetable plot so the frost can get into the soil and break it up, thus using the weather to help you come spring. Check any bulbs, corms and tubers you have in store, it’s also a good time to service the mower. As we are clearing away the garden refuse what better time for a winter bonfire, who’s got the spuds to roast in the fire?

"Hare today & gone tomorrow" by Veronica Allerston
"Lucas!" I hurried but Master had no tolerance with my lameness and yelled instructions the moment I appeared. “Gut my hare at eleven o`clock” “Yes Master” I replied shuffling away to obey. I was surprised as he seemed fond of his pet hare but as he frequently reminded me, it wasn’t my place to question commands. Entering it's run I shuffled crab-like, knees together, preventing the wretched hare escaping. It looked at me flickering its ears; the equivalent of a two-finger gesture. As I shut the gate it disappeared. After a few minutes creeping and peering through the shrubs within the run, I spotted the blighter sitting on its hutch. That twoeared-two-fingered sign again. It hopped off the roof and gazed at me. I tiptoed, attempting to appear stationary. It wasn’t fooled. I lunged; it was off. I`d failed to notice the mud-slick. Suddenly I was on my back taking a slide. I stopped; gasping. The cursed hare took a flying leap onto my chest knocking the remaining wind from my lungs. The rhythm of my panting lulled it into a false sense of
security and turning its back on me proceeded to wash those ridiculous ears. My breath regained, I kept the panting motion up, slowly raising my hands and grabbed. Rolling onto my stomach, my prisoner beneath me, I held the ears with one hand and levered myself up with the other.. As I did the deed declaring our battle over, the church clock struck eleven and I still had to gut it. I took out my knife, slit its skin full-length peeling it off like a coat and scooped out the innards. Tricks of the trade (did I mention Dad's a poacher?). Dumping the gutted hare on the kitchen table I shuffled round to Master`s window as the clock struck eleven-fifteen. I slipped one leg over the sill, hoping to stand behind him pretending I`d been there all along. But he was already pounding the air with his fists. He bellowed, “Lucas, you`re late. I told you to be here at eleven to cut my hair.” Gently I lifted my leg back over the sill.

New local author Linda Taylor’s FOUR novels are refreshingly different. Why? Because they are NOT graphically sexually explicit nor are they graphically violent.. But they are page turners! TO GULLS’ REST.. The story of a woman in her 40’s who, having nursed her aged parents, finally finds love and satisfaction despite warring siblings and her lover’s troublesome teenage daughter. It has humour, pathos and a touch of the supernatural to keep you page turning. **JACK & JUST THREE GIRLS This is a 2 in one book bargain! ‘JACK’ is the story of a young boy’s sexual awakening, told with great sensitivity and set in the late 1950’s ‘JUST THREE GIRLS’ is set in 1969 and tells the story of three teenagers and how they manage the ‘Swinging Sixties’ era. **TELLING DREAMS Very different this one: Louise, the main character, has always had strange, recurring dreams. The one
about to begin takes her on a journey that crosses the frontiers of consciousness. OUR BREAD AND BUTTER Part autobiographical this is set in a dingy 1960’s local boarding house ( no longer in existence) and spans one memorable year in the life of the youngest of six children, a girl of 9. Naivety and humour throughout. All available in paperback and ** also as E Books, from www.amazon.co.uk. www.fast-print.net/store. php and The Great British Bookshop

When we were small, we would share the bath but that could be fun. Gisele, the eldest daughter, would supervise bath day: sitting on the white, metal stool watching that we soaped and rinsed ‘all those important little places’ as she called them. I can remember how this would make my elder, by 11 months, brother and I giggle. When we were this small we would investigate one another’s belly buttons, even though Gisele would tell us to stop doing that. ‘Why Gus?’ we would query and back came the same silly answer:’ they could come undone.’ ‘Then all yesterday’s peas would tumble out!’ Johnny would reply and laugh and laugh at this and start me off laughing C too. M ‘You two!’ Gisele would declare.’ If you don’t hurry up and get out of that Y cold, scummy end, Linda, you’ll catch your death!’ Being the smallest, I usually took the curved end of the big, enamel- coated, CM bath and was the last one to finish and step out to Gisele and her big white MY bath towel, ready to vigorously rub us dry. In hind sight, I don’t suppose she enjoyed the task much. CY She obviously thought it through though because later she would make use of the opportunity to sing to us. She didn’t have a very good voice andCMY always tried out on us one or two of her favourite pop singers’ songs. This K was from Elvis Presley’s hits. How could she hope to be any good? He was a man wasn’t he and she had hardly any voice at all! She couldn’t hit high notes and in point of fact, most of her notes sounded the same. Mary and I were both in the choir at school, so we could tell. John, Mary, three years older than me, and I, decided we should discourage her. ‘Don’t you like my singing?’ she asked one Sunday bath day evening, when we had made enough unappreciative noises -sighing and tutting. ‘No.’ replied Mary, outspoken as ever. ‘Not much’ I said softly. ‘What about you, Johnny?’ she turned to him, hoping for at least one ally. ‘It doesn’t sound like Elvis, does it? He’s much better. I’d rather go and listen to your record player in your room.’ Gisele’s face would darken. ‘You are not to go in my room, Johnny Bishop. Do you hear me? And if I catch you meddling with my Danzette…’ He hung his head, despondent but obediently listening, as children used to do when their elders told them off.
Our Bread and Butter
Life was crowded in the Guest House and fraught due to constant money worries. There were six competing children, one aging, interfering Grandmother, a sickly mother and six resident strangers, who came from such different backgrounds and could be demanding and eccentric. But children are resilient and fun could be found in the least expected places:

This dish a typical Moroccan dish which is particularly enjoyed in Marrakesh, celebrates two of Morocco’s most famous ingredients – cracked green olives and preserved lemons. Try this recipe when you want to cook a whole chicken, this is another method to add excellent flavour instead of by the usual roasting method. You can simply serve with plain couscous and salad or with vegetable side dish. Simple Method Place the chicken in a deep dish, rub the garlic, coriander, lemon juice and salt into the chicken, mix the olive oil with the grated onion, saffron, ginger and pepper and rub this mixture on chicken. Cover and leave to stand for about 30 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a tagine or large flameproof casserole dish and pour the juices over. Pour in sufficient water to come halfway up the chicken, add the cinnamon stick and bring the water to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer for about 1 hour turning the chicken occasionally. Preheat the oven to 150*C/300*F/Gas2. Using a large serving spoon, carefully lift the chicken out of the tagine/casserole dish and set aside on a plate, covered with foil. Turn up the heat and boil the cooking liquid for five minutes to reduce it. Replace the chicken in the liquid and baste it thoroughly. Add the olives and preserved lemon and place the tagine casserole in the oven for about 15 minutes. Serve the chicken with couscous or vegetable dish, Ingredients required Approx. 3lb chicken Pinch of saffron threads 3-4 garlic cloves - crushed 1 tbsp ground ginger Small bunch of coriander – 1 tbsp black pepper Finley chopped. 1 cinnamon stick 1 lemon- extract juice 1 cupful of cracked green 5ml/1 table spoon salt olives 4-5 tbsp olive oil 2 preserved lemons, cut into 1 large onion- grated stripes
