Golden Times would like to thank the Hastings Printing Company for the excellent service they have provided, enabling us to bring you a great magazine. www.hastings-print.co.uk Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman In Pink Sussex women fired up by the arrival of spring are being urged to channel their energy into kick-starting a healthier lifestyle by preparing for a Cancer Research 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy Race for Life event. Becoming more active has longer-term benefits, as research shows that even regular, moderate physical activity can help reduce the risk of cancer. Not only does it help to maintain a healthy body weight but it also has a protective effect in itself. Jenny Ainsworth, Event Manager at Cancer Research UK said: “Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Whether you choose to walk, jog or charge around the course, you’ll be joining an army of women united in the battle against cancer. Whether you’re a running pro or novice, every step you take around the course will help bring us one step closer to the day when all cancers are cured.” “And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on women in Sussex to get moving, lace up their trainers and show cancer that 'hell hath no fury like a woman in pink' by signing up now for the Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k events happening in Sussex across June and July.” Pretty Muddy Events in Sussex: Brighton, Stanmer Park 4th July 5k Events in Sussex: Horsham, Horsham Park 7 June. Frank’s Travels - Confessions of a holiday Rep Well, here I was on the island of Gran Canaria where I spent my first few days familiarising myself with the local area. The resort manager, told me which hotel I was to work at and how to find my way there. It was only about 2km from her office so I decided to walk there as part of my familiarisation tour. I introduced myself to the hotel management team, and they could not have been more helpful. They regarded me as a bit of a novelty at the time because of my age! They were more used to dealing with twenty something company reps. I was, however, accepted as a part of the team, and the fact that the management team all spoke English removed a major stumbling block as my knowledge of Spanish at this stage was zero! Part of my job was to sell the excursions that my company offered so in order to develop my sales pitch I had to attend every available trip on offer and write copious notes on what I had seen, and what were the main items of interest during the coach trips. Mind blowing, I can tell you. As I am sure you are aware information storage does not get easier as you get older. Another little gem which was dropped in my lap, almost at the last moment, was that I had to organise the free "Mystery Tour" which was part of the guests holiday offer. Great! With the help of an amazing Canarian guy who took me out one day on a complete tour of this lovely island, I came across a distillery in the hills at the very north of the island. Using my driver as my interpreter I got an agreement from the distillery bosses to bring my new arrivals on a tour of the complete distillery, bottling plant, and the product packaging department on a weekly basis. Brilliant! As the big day dawned for the arrival of the first of my guests I had my info book fully prepared, and I can't describe how I felt as I set off for Las Palmas airport to do my first "meet & greet". Luckily all went smoothly. Everyone had found their luggage on the carousel, and I managed to direct all and sundry to the correct coach. Bearing in mind that all my guests were senior citizens I made sure I did a second head-count when they were

all seated. On route to our destination I had to give everyone a briefing on the do's and dont's of the resort and remind them of things like only drinking bottled water instead of the local stuff, and not to imbibe too liberally on their first night as the booze, although quite cheap, was also quite strong. Personal experience speaking? The following morning after breakfast we had a welcome meeting in the hotel lounge, and then I took all the guests on a walking tour of the resort, pointing out all the places I thought they should know about, and answering questions where possible. Afterwards we all adjourned to a local watering hole where they all said that this was the first time in their travels that they had ever been taken on a tour of the resort area where they were holidaying. I felt this made my efforts before they arrived all worthwhile. When it came to the mystery tour it went like magic. At the end of the tour all the guests were invited into the on-site hospitality centre to sample the company products. It was quite funny really because I was asked to serve the sample drinks. I felt like I was back behind my bar in England. After a few liberal samples everyone was invited to buy any products they would like from the staff shop. I told them that if there was something they fancied but weren't sure about it just nip back into the bar, and I would give them a taster. What I did not find out until later was that I would get 10% commission on all shop sales on a monthly basis. WooooHoooo! Now that was a nice surprise. When my tour of duty finally came to an end the following May I was quite sorry to leave but it was Springtime in England, and I already knew that next season I would be back in the Canaries but this time on the island of Tenerife. I hope you have enjoyed sharing my experience, so until the next time watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living Frank
Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2015. The East Sussex based charity, Association of Carers, provide a complimentary lunch during volunteer’s week to show recognition and thanks to all their volunteers. Doreen is one of their volunteers and here’s her story: "I wanted to give something back to the community and meet some new people, too. I approached Association of Carers to learn about becoming a "Befriending with Respite" Volunteer. I was matched with Fausto and Immacolata. They were so warm, friendly and welcoming that I immediately felt at ease. Fausto had a stroke, which affected his speech and mobility. My role is to give Immacolata a break by spending three hours a week with Fausto. We have played games and have been able to build up a good relationship despite his being unable to speak. I’ve gained a sense of personal satisfaction from knowing I am helping. It has developed into a natural friendship where it feels more like I am visiting an aunt and uncle for a weekly chat and coffee. I cannot believe I have found a volunteering role where the people I am supporting have become like family”

Julia Meanwell - Growing Older I have only recently become aware that ‘Gerascophobia’ is the term for the fear of getting older! I tend to smile when I think that I may now be considered as one of the elders of society because inside I still feel like a youngster. There is no denying the inevitability of ageing but even though I am growing old I will do my best to be old and growing! But where does old age start? According to a 2012 survey it starts at 59! Regrettably our society doesn’t seem to fully recognise the wisdom and experience that the senior population have to offer. In China families respect and value their elders because they know their time with them is limited, so they cherish their knowledge all the more. Studies in Japan have shown that the rate of depression and dementia is far lower than many other countries, suggesting that this culture may bring about a mentally protective effect. Non-gerascophobic agony aunt Virginia Ironside’s book ‘Twenty Reasons Why Growing Old is Great’ makes for an interesting read! She suggests that we should stop grumbling about getting old and start making the most of our twilight years. So perhaps instead of despairing at the sight of increasingly grey hair and abundant wrinkles we need to shift our attitudes towards ageing! Figures released by The Harley Medical Group last year revealed that there has been a 17% increase in women over the age of 65 using their clinics. So I guess I shouldn’t have been quite as surprised as I was when I visited my dentist the other day and saw a price list for Botox injections and dermal fillers! There are many healthful ways to improve our appearance as we get older without having poison injected into us.

Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. Clothing styles have never been so varied and colourful, hair and make-up can really enhance our appearance. We now have almost too many specs to choose from with a range of colour our parents’ generation would marvel at. Let’s embrace our age and experience by living fully and challenging outdated perceptions; seeing the progression of old age as a new stage of life rather than the closing stages of our time on this earth. Try not to become entrenched in thinking about the things you can no longer do and direct your energy into what you can do! Research has shown that those who have a positive view of ageing actually stay healthier longer. If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website juliameanwellcounselling.co.uk She can be contacted by email Julia.meanwell@gmail.com or give her a call on 07714 280083.
The Computer Trainer By: Neil Duncan Tablets: Which one to take? Q: Help! My children want to buy me a tablet computer for my upcoming birthday but there are so many to choose from I am bewildered at the thought of it! What should I go for? A: Ever since Apple launched the iPad, tablets have been taking the world by storm. In 2015 it is estimated that they will overtake sales of laptops and desktops combined, which is incredible growth. Most commentators put this down to their intuitive ease of use, with touchscreens instead of a mouse and keyboard, plus great portability. For a beginner they are certainly a good learning option. Since the iPad many tablets have hit the markets. As ever, a lot comes down to your budget, but with this equipment the motto ‘you get what you pay for’ is certainly true. At the top end the iPad still reigns as the smartest looking and best working touchscreen of them all, but the new full size ‘iPad Air’ costs £399 upwards. A cheaper option is the new mini iPad, a smaller-screen version but still powerful, which retails at £249 upwards. Elsewhere the Samsung Galaxy Note has become a true rival to the iPad, with a fantastic screen and more flexibility with the programs (called ‘apps’) you can have on it. They start at around £300. A whole host of cheaper tablets are now available from most high street retailers: Tesco’s Hudl laptop is very popular and has good reviews, as well as Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, both retailing at only £119 – but don’t expect the top-end quality of the iPad or Galaxy. That said, if you only want to send some emails, play music and do a bit of online shopping, you could do far worse than some of the solid lower-end contenders. Neil Duncan is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Hastings/Eastbourne areas. He can come to your home for 1:1 lessons on any device and for any topic; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges are from £35 per hour including training materials. Please call 01323 700 170 or 01424 400 190 to enquire.

Are you worried about having to sell your home to pay for care costs? Over 50,000 homes were sold in the last year for that reason but it can be easily avoided.
Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?
If you have to go into care you may be "means tested" by your Local Authority to assess your ability to pay for that care. Under current rules, if you have assets that total more than £23,250 (in England), which could include the value of your home, you will be required to fund your care in full – a care home will cost £500-£800 a week or more. Not every family is affected by this issue, and in certain circumstances your home and savings might not be vulnerable. Osteoporosis Bones stop growing in length between the ages of 15-18 in females & 17-21years in males but bone density continues to form until the late 20s. After the age of around 35, bone loss increases very gradually as part of the natural ageing process. This can lead to osteoporosis and an increased risk of broken bones, especially in later life.
Risk factors for Osteoporosis •
A family History of Osteoporosis/ hip fracture
• Post-menopausal without hormone replacement therapy •
Late onset of menstrual periods
•
Immobility and a sedentary lifestyle
•
Inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake
• Smoking •
Excessive alcohol
•
High caffeine intake
•
Amenorrhea- loss of periods
•
Thin Body type
•
Caucasian or Asian race
•
Certain medical conditions
you have a ‘greater risk of fracture’. Thin, fragile bones in themselves are not painful but the broken bones that can result can cause pain and other problems. Bones that break because of osteoporosis will still heal in the same way as they do in people who do not have osteoporosis. Hip Fractures - Hips broken as a result of osteoporosis occur most commonly in our late 70s or 80s, usually as a result of a fall and can affect all aspects of life. Full recovery is always possible but will often depend on how well someone is before the broken hip occurs. Getting back to being fully mobile and independent can be difficult and physiotherapy and social care services are often essential. Breaking a hip when you are older can have a major impact on your independence. It can also create a real fear of falling among older people and can make them cautious of everyday activities. Wrist Fractures - Broken wrists can be the first indication that you have osteoporosis. They often occur in middle aged women who have put out their arm to break a fall. Healthy bones should be able to withstand a fall from standing height.
Talk to your doctor about the medications you are taking and what you can do to protect your bones. Causes of osteoporosis are sometimes multiple in nature, some are not under our control and some are. Prevention means changing your lifestyle and habits. Unfortunately you cannot change all of the above but you can change what you eat and drink. This combined with a regular exercise regime and postural awareness can help contribute to a reduction in bone loss.
Consequences of Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is Only Painful if Fractures Have Occurred Having osteoporosis does not automatically mean that your bones will break, it just means it is more likely and that
THE BODY JUNCTION
Other Fractures - The humerus (upper arm), ribs or the pelvis may break if they are fragile but the wrist, spinal bones and hip are the most common places for fractures to happen. There are a number of less common types of osteoporosis and related conditions you may want to know about. The Osteoporosis Society website is very helpful or you can call them for more information.

Although bones heal they do not return to their previous shape which can cause height loss or spinal curvature. If a number of wedge fractures occur together then the spine can tip forward causing an outward curve (kyphosis). If the bones are flattened, the trunk can be shortened in length causing loss of height. A fracture of one or more of the vertebrae can occur as if fractures are numerous and severe they can lead to significant height loss and curvature causing shortness of breath, protruding stomach, indigestion problems and stress incontinence. This is because of a reduction in the available space for the internal organs. These changes in posture can affect some people who become distressed by changes in their shape and face difficulties with buying suitable clothes. However, not everyone is affected severely. Physiotherapists have a role to play in both the prevention and management of Osteoporosis. In the older adult years, particularly if Osteopenia or Osteoporosis is present, the aim is to conserve bone mass, reduce the risk of falls, promote extended posture, reduce pain, and improve mobility and function. Your Physiotherapist may recommend Pilates as an excellent form of exercise and is helpful with balance, thus helping prevent falls. This can empower the individual to take control of the condition. Other activities for balance, posture and aerobic fitness could include a fast walking program, cycling, swimming and specific exercises. Visit the Body Junction for further advice.

Walk within a day of a total hip replacement at Benenden Hospital With thousands of hip replacement operations being carried out every year its no wonder that recovery times have dramatically reduced over the last 10 years. Demand for hip replacements has been growing steadily and with higher patient expectations and an increasing age of survival this trend is set to continue. Good hip surgery is not just about avoiding negative outcomes – it’s about the patient ending up with a pain free joint and restored mobility as soon as possible. Mr Hugh Apthorp, who’s recently joined as a leading hip surgeon at Benenden Hospital, developed the short stay hip replacement programme in 2004 to significantly reduce the amount of time patients spend in hospital when undergoing a Total Hip Replacement (THR). To gain the full benefits that minimally invasive total hip replacement can offer, Mr Apthorp believes in a whole team approach to promote a rapid recovery programme for patients meeting set criteria. Whole team approach to speed recovery The multi team approach, including the orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre team, ward staff and physiotherapist, has shown excellent results in the delivery of patient focused care with some patients being discharged after only one day in hospital. With the UK’s highest number of hip replacements for 2014, the lowest average hospital stay, with approximately 67% of his patients experiencing a maximum 2-day stay in hospital, Mr Apthorp is considered to be one of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in the UK. Walking on the same day as surgery The minimally invasive surgical technique involves a smaller incision, that has many benefits including less damage to the tissue, less pain, reduced blood loss and faster recovery time. In using a spine anaesthetic, which wears off quickly, the return of movement is improved dramatically with patients encouraged to become mobile, with the use of crutches and assistance from physiotherapists,
on the same day the procedure has been performed. The analgesic effects of this anaesthetic last much longer which aids quicker mobility. Building patient confidence, and a commitment to treatment consistency, are vital aspects of the next-day discharge program according to Mr Apthorp. With a set schedule to preand post-operative Mr Hugh Apthorp care, patients are put at ease as they know what to expect. “The general principle is to give as much care in the outpatient setting as possible, and only use inpatient facilities where they are absolutely necessary,” said Mr Apthorp. Benenden Hospital – a centre of excellence With state-of-the-art operating theatres; leading consultants; en-suite rooms and rigorous infection control systems to keep patients safe from hospital acquired infections Benenden Hospital is a firstclass award-winning independent trust hospital. Benenden Hospital is the second largest single site independent provider in the South East for orthopaedic surgery with a reputation as a high quality provider as evidenced from a recent patient satisfaction survey. 100% of those surveyed felt they were treated with respect and dignity with all patients finding the wards extremely clean. Quality care is key to a positive patient experience. With 99% of patients recording their trust and confidence in the staff treating them, Benenden staff have shown their compassion, friendly and empathetic approach, which has been duly recognised through the silver Investors in People award. The skirt that will “save M&S” is now in the shops. It is a high-waisted A-line skirt in brown which you can buy for £199 in suede or £39.99 in faux suede. Or rather, you can’t buy it because it’s already sold out. In fact it sold out before it hit the stores thanks to some very clever marketing and a media that likes to follow the pack. For weeks, the press fashion pages have been full of pictures of this skirt surrounded by encouragements to get your hands on this seasons “it” skirt. And women in their thousands have heeded the call. If it looks good on Alexa Chung, it’ll look good on me. Right? Wrong. Firstly, it doesn’t look good on anyone. It looks like what it is – a throwback to the 70s – and we only have to look at old photos to see that only Cher looked good in 70’s clothes. Secondly, why would any woman want to wear an item which we will all recognise and think, “I see you fell for the hype then?” And what about individuality and personality. There are so few things in life where we have genuine choice, but clothes is one. Why let someone else make the decision for you? Especially when that person is really only interested in their profit margin. I’ve made a plea before for independent fashion stores and I do so again. Search out the little boutiques in your local area. The people running those shops will have chosen their ranges with care, knowing what their local clientele want. They will have just a few of each item so you will be buying

a more exclusive piece, and you’ll usually get much better service than in any global chain store.
On the subject of shopping locally, I must bring you up to date on my search for the perfect dress for my daughter’s wedding. The nuptials take place in August. I know it’s miles off but I’m out of the country for a couple of months and I don’t want to leave it till the last minute. I enlisted my most stylish friend to help me get started. Ignoring all my own advice, we headed up to Westfield in London in search of the holy grail. First things first – coffee and a catch up. We finished just in time for lunch and a bottle of prosecco. (Does anyone else shop like this?) I did buy a dress. I doubt that it will be “the one”, but at least I have something suitable which makes me feel more comfortable. After a post-shopping cocktail (just one!) I set off home on the train, only to find I had left the bag with the dress in the bar. Oh well, lucky I have some gorgeous little boutiques near me.

Tricia's column - Nuts in May
remember singing a rhyme as a young girl about gathering nuts in May on a "cold and frosty morning". I do hope for my garden's sake that there aren't any more frosts this year, it would spoil a few of the lovely flowers ! As I write my column, a couple of my grandchildren are recreating "Jurassic Park" with plastic dinosaurs among the plants in the garden. I've got Triceratopses in my Tulips and Stegosauruses in my Sweet Peas. Their granddad has warned them not to squash his Hollyhocks. Heaven forbid! It's lovely to see them frolicking about in the fresh air now that winter has packed its bags and there's no excuse for them to be inside on a sunny day. That doesn't just apply to the kids either, no excuse for those of us of a finer vintage not to get out and about at this time of year. There's so much on, as you can see below and right, as well as elsewhere in the magazine. All sorts of shows, featuring everything from agriculture to classic cars to tickle your fancy. I always find nosing around stalls at a fayre or a fete one of the things
I look forward to each summer. We're very lucky in Sussex to have a really wide range of local produce and crafts available to us. As you can see from the superb floral display on the front cover, visiting somewhere like Pashley Manor gardens can be a real treat at this time of year when the gardens are at their most spectacular. As well as being a very pleasant way to while away an afternoon, it's a great way to get inspiration for your own garden. If you are tasked with looking after the grandchildren this May half term, make sure you have a look for ideas in the latest edition of the Family Buzz. Alternatively, pop along to the website www.familybuzz.co.uk where you'll find a page dedicated to half term events. That's about it from me, I shall be back in July with my next column

Gardening tips for late spring-early summer by Phoenix Gardening. Well the weather has warmed up and the garden is coming alive with buds and colour. If you’re lucky enough to have a Viburnam Bodnantense in your garden the flowers will probably have just about finished, to be replaced by the brilliant yellows of Forsythia and Kerria Japonica. Once Forsythia has finished flowering give it a prune by taking some old wood out down to ground level. When pruning, it’s always stand back every so often, so you get to see the structure and shape of a plant. Time too to get those summer bulbs in the ground, if you have grown some sweet peas in pots they can now be planted out, you can also sow sweet peas now where they are to flower. We can also sow vegetables without protection, just check the packets before you do, although you may want to protect them from birds. As we roll into the start of summer we can finish planting up baskets and containers, dead head those border plants regularly it’s also time to keep an eye out for aphids and mildew and treat promptly. Don’t forget to fertilize those roses once the main flush is over.

Lime Chilli Chicken Marinade - Recipe by Faz Razeen It's summertime soon and — as the saying goes — the living is easy, or at least it will be when you try this simple, fast, fresh recipe for your next barbecue, garden or beach party.
or using a large knife. Evenly rub the marinade on both sides of the chicken and then leave to marinate for a minimum of 3-4 hours.
Chicken has become popular around the world and plays an important part in the diet. One of the easiest and least disruptive ways to reduce your fat intake is to change the way you cook. Trying new recipes, even with familiar ingredients, is fun and will result in the pleasure of eating delicious meals that are also healthier.
Heat barbecue or griddle pan, coat with olive or cooking oil, cook on both sides until lightly brown and tender. Approximate cooking time: 5-7 minutes on each side depending on the thickness of the chicken.
A barbeque party is the perfect way to spend time with family and friends, and this simply Lime Chilli Chicken Marinade, will go down a treat! To Prepare the Lime Chilli Marinade you will need: Lime juice extracted from 2 limes Pinch of ground cumin 2 spring onions finely chopped 3-4 cloves of garlic crushed 4-5 tablespoons of soy sauce 1-3 (Depending on how hot you like your marinade) small fresh green chillis finely chopped. Thoroughly mix all of the ingredients together in a mixing bowl ready to apply to the meat. To Prepare the Chicken you will need: 4 chicken breasts: (Average weight varies from 500-650g) Cooking oil or olive oil Coarsely chopped coriander Salt and pepper for seasoning Flatten the chicken breasts by using a mallet, steak hammer
Golden Times Magazine is proud to be a media partner of the Sussex Over 50s Show
Garnish with Coriander and lime wedges and serve with your own choice of accompaniments. This tastes absolutely fantastic – a lovely balance of chilli heat and sourness from the limes. This Lime Chilli Marinade also works brilliantly with Pork Chops and Steaks. Make sure lime chilli marinade is thoroughly rubbed on both sides of the pork chops or steaks then follow the same method used for chicken.
