elcome to the latest edition of Golden Times, which is, in fact, our 2nd anniversary edition. The last two years have flown by with the magazine going from strength to strength. Over the past two years we've met hundreds of our readers at various events and exhibitions, and we've always been hugely flattered by the positive comments you've made about our publication. Many of you have commented on the cover photos and noted that I've been very bad at providing details of where the shots have been taken, I've taken steps to remedy this on page 39 of this very issue, I hope you'll enjoy my photo feature. Another packed magazine this time with competitions offering our readers the chance to win a thrilling balloon ride, a vineyard tour with wine tasting, and tickets to see a fabulous Panto, make sure you enter! Thanks once again to all of our advertisers for their continued support, we hope all of you will scour the pages of Golden Times when seeking the services of a local business. Make sure you mention us if you do! Enjoy the magazine Jason

Frank’s Travels

On the morning after my first night at Lake Taupo I walked into town to visit the Tourist Information centre again. I acquired some local maps, and set about planning the rest of my stay in this lovely area. I decided that day one would be spent visiting the area around Rotarua as there appeared to be a lot of points of interest for yours truly to do his "Bewildered Tourist" bit. How amazed was I when I got into this area?? There was so much of interest going on I had a job working out where to start, and as I was only planning to be in that area for one day I knew I would have to make the best of it. The area of the hot springs was certainly high on my list of priorities so off I trundled. Fabulous!! I had never seen anything quite like these huge waterspouts of boiling hot water shooting high into the air, and giving the area a sort of surreal atmosphere... I imagined myself on another planet. Then there was the boiling mud: Yes that's right, boiling mud. A lot of you have probably heard of this natural phenomenon before, but to actually witness it is quite an experience. Although the smell is a bit like rotten eggs it does nothing to curtail the fascination of watching the earth bubbling away like molten lava. I finally managed to break the spell of this area, and decided my next stop would be to visit the rather splendid museum, and beget myself of some local culture!! This turned out to be well worth while, and

I spent quite some time being fascinated by Maori culture, and history. As time was marching on I decided to start making my way back towards Taupo as I wanted to detour off towards the Huka falls. Although I had read about the Falls before arriving in New Zealand I still found the experience quite awesome, and I was amazed at the roar of the water as it thundered through the bottleneck......Wow!! The other thing about this area is the number of well signed routes for walkers. There are large maps of the recommended routes for walkers of varying degrees of fitness, and the average time each walk should take... These Kiwis think of everything, and it demonstrates the high level of care afforded to both residents, and tourists alike. As I was intending to make my way in the direction of South Island the following morning I thought I would head back to the ranch for an early night. Well that was my intention until I had a friendly chat with a couple of former Kiwis who were ex-army. I ended up in a local hostelry, and had a long, long night. Ah well, I didn't go all that way to be teetotal did I?? That's all for now so until the next time watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living. Frank

Julia Meanwell When I write about relationships and the difficult issues that couples sometimes face I wonder if the reader experiences my words as all doom and gloom? I just want to emphasise that although many of the clients I see have numerous difficulties to overcome I am frequently inspired by unforeseen positive outcomes. Even couples that have been married for 30 years or more have been able to find a new way of relating that sets them on the road to a brighter future together. I have seen people completely turn their lives around and come back from the brink of despair. All of this is only possible because of the hard work and commitment they have each been prepared to put in to communicate in a more honest open way with each other. Obviously I write about the difficulties people are experiencing in their relationships because they only contact me when there is a problem. December is considered to be the most stressful month for couples and not surprisingly January is one of the busiest months for relationship counsellors. Spending concentrated time together over the Christmas period can exacerbate the problems of a relationship that is already under strain. Inhibitions can be reduced by alcohol adding to the tension that is already underpinning the festivities; this coupled with the

Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. possible financial burdens pave the way to crisis. With the New Year looming there can be a feeling of the need for change and a sense of not wanting to go through yet another year of conflict and unhappiness. For some, either through bereavement, divorce or separation Christmas can be a very challenging time. If it’s your first Christmas as a solo then do not suffer alone, seek out support whether it be from a friend, relative or professional therapist. Planning for the future Recently, my wife and I took the long overdue step of seeking some professional advice on creating a will. It's one of those subjects that no one really likes to spend time thinking about, but not preparing properly for the inevitable can leave relatives and loved ones with unnecessary, difficult decisions to make. Aware of his excellent reputation locally, we contacted David Cowley of Collective Legal Solutions and arranged an appointment to take advantage of his vast experience. A week prior to his visit, we were provided with a list of things we needed to consider beforehand to enable things to proceed quickly and smoothly. From the very start, it became apparent that there were a number of things we really hadn't considered. It's not until you start to explore the possibilities and pitfalls with someone who understands the process

inside out that you can be sure every necessary detail is considered and all possible situations are adequately catered for. By the time of David's visit, we had a number of questions, all of which were answered with reassuring authority. With the meeting being held in our home, the atmosphere was relaxed and informal but efficient. Within a short period of time our questions had been answered and informed decisions had been made. Once the paperwork had been completed, we could now have peace of mind that our affairs are in order and our wishes will be clearly documented. If you need some help planning for the future we'd definitely recommend giving Collective Legal Solutions a call on 01424 434788 or 07718 155740 www.clshastings.co.uk

How much is too much? Did you know that adults should not be regularly exceeding 3-4 units (men) daily/2-3 units (women) daily and that we all need at least 2 alcohol free days per week? These recommended limits are deemed as too high for most people over the age of 60 due to other health conditions and medication. Are you the one in five who has been trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol they drank in the previous 12 months? If now is the time to think about your drink why not contact Action for Change? It is important to remember that most people in East Sussex drink at a level that does not cause any kind of problem but we can help you achieve your drinking goals whether this is abstinence or controlled drinking. Did you know that...? •over 45s are 3 times more likely to drink alcohol every day. •people who work are more likely to drink alcohol than unemployed people. •Alcohol is the biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking. Our service is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL to any resident of East Sussex. We run open access sessions throughout the county and no appointment is necessary. If you would like to speak with someone about your, or someone else’s drinking, please call 01323 721000 or go to www.action-for-change.org to see where our open access clinics are held.

SICK AND TIRED OF FEELING SICK AND TIRED?

3 TOP TIPS TO GET THE SPRING BACK IN YOUR STEP

1 Take a look inside your fridge – have you left the art of cooking behind you? Relying on ready meals? Cutting corners with sauces? Lazy dinners? Nothing beats a Roast Chicken, or a slow cooked Beef Stew – go on – COOK REAL AGAIN. Less Fat, Less Salt, Less Sugar in your diet and you’ll feel dandy in no time. Remember VEGETABLES? They aren’t a garnish! Eat LOADS. 2 Can you sit on the floor like you used to? Do you heave yourself off the sofa? Lean on the coffee table to plug the hoover in? Sounds like your body has got a bit RUSTY and whilst oil works nicely on a shed door - Pilates is a better option for us to get mobile again. Slow, controlled, supervised and almost always lying down on a mat – it’s a relaxing way for all ages and conditions to improve mobility. 3 Stressed, unhappy, anxious, snacking, processed food or bad sleeping habits all create hormone peaks in your body such as over production of insulin, adrenalin or cortisol – all quite toxic, and contributes to ‘bellyfat’. Take some TIME OUT for YOU, bed by 10.30, and ask for help if you are struggling with ANYTHING causing you anxiety.

COLOUR YOURSELF CONFIDENT

Is there a better colour than red for every woman at any age? I love the way wearing red takes you from invisible woman to invincible woman! And for women over 50, it's crucial we find ways to remain visible and relevant. Nothing says "ignore me" more than dull dressing so, as we hit the Christmas party scene, go for the "notice me" flash of colour. Red is an exciting, dynamic colour and wearing it will have an effect on how you feel and how others feel about you. Wear it well and you'll feel supremely confident, especially as the compliments flow. You can't wear a bright red dress to a party and skulk in the kitchen all evening. You will be the centre of attention so you might as well go straight to the dance-floor and start strutting your stuff! If you want to ease yourself in gently, try wearing a lovely, soft scarf. Go for a big wrap - you want it to look sumptuous and rich and do make sure you choose the right shade for your skin tone. "Cool" reds have a lot of blue in them and will suit you if you generally prefer silver jewellery and bright "jewel" colours like emerald and cobalt blue. "Warm" reds have more yellow and suit you if you look good in browns, creams, and gold. A glorious red handbag will cheer up every outfit and make

you smile every time you pick it up. Get used to people commenting on it - especially in supermarket checkout queues. Trust me, it always happens! Red shoes can be fabulous but you are in danger of drawing all the attention down to the floor (and never, never with a matching handbag!). Of course, the killer item is the crimson lipstick. Again, the right shade is really important so get some professional advice from the beauty counter. If this is a new experience for you, you might hate it when you first look in the mirror. "It's too tarty" is a common reaction. Bear with it. Wear it in the house and catch sight of yourself in the mirror. After a few days you'll wonder how you ever left the house without that glossy pout. How much red is too much red? Only you know the answer to that. Red is the colour of confidence so make sure you feel fantastic when you're wearing it. Ask your friends for feedback and, if in doubt, go down a notch. No-one wants to be mistaken for Mother Christmas! Want to find out more? I'm Michèle Duke, an Independent Style Advisor with a gorgeous collection of French Fashions for women. Visit my Studio in East Sussex for the ultimate in Personal Shopping. The first 5 people to call me quoting "Golden Times" will receive a FREE 45minute Style Consultation. stay active with our great value six-o membership My name is Margaret and aged 86, I’ve never smoked and only drink alcohol moderately. Twenty years ago my doctor prescribed me three months of exercise at the leisure centre in an attempt to slow the spread of arthritis in my joints. I then attended “early risers” a couple of mornings a week where I mainly concentrated on swimming. Since then I have regularly attended the gym three mornings a week from 7 till 8. I thought I was too old to start exercise but I wouldn’t feel as good today without it!

Gardening Tips from Jonathon Charles Garden Design The Grey skies and rain are upon us once again; the temptation to close the back door, stand next to the fire and forget about the garden, is high. However, there is so much to do and indeed much to get excited about, it is well worth postponing putting the Secateurs away. Now is a great time to assess how your garden has performed this year. Are there some changes that could be made? What worked? What did not? Many plants will tolerate being divided during this period. Helleborus Orientalis benefit from being split before Christmas. Try digging a large clump up and prising it apart using two forks- the smaller the resulting clump, the less likely it will flower this winter, so do be generous. Of course the official line states that late winter is best for such tasks, but providing the perennials are hardy, now is a perfect time- do avoid compacting the borders during overly wet periods, though. Hemerocallis Day Lilies, Iris Sibirica and Crocosmia are but a few that can be happily split. Cut back unsightly spent perennials, being sure to leave those that offer winter interest (Astilbe) until spring. More tender species, such as Penstamon, should be left until the warmer weather returns- late frosts are the half-hardy perennial's worst nightmare; any new growth will be damaged and there will be little left to regenerate from if they have already been pruned back. Gently prune roses to help them avoid wind rock, being sure not to prune them too hard at this time of year.

The exception to the rule are climbing rose varieties, excluding ramblers which require a post flowering, summer appointment with the secateurs; prune and train climbing roses, filling in any gaps in the framework, where possible. Removing the leaves can be valuable in preventing disease being passed on to next seasons new growth, but do not compost them. Get creative! Plant groups of Tulips to create a bold statement in the coming spring. Planting a range of early and late varieties will help to sustain the show. If they haven't already been taken care of, move more tender pot plants to a sheltered spot and perhaps consider bubble wrapping the pots. Beautiful Standard Bay Trees have had a rough time in recent winters. I have seen one too many sad looking specimens, emerging brown and deceased in the spring time. Move these to a sheltered place away from cold winds- perhaps a greenhouse if one is available. And finally, the dreaded leaf collection. Compost the collected leaves to make a fantastic leaf mulcha great way to improve your soil, suppress weeds and aid in moisture retention. Ericaceous plants, in particular, enjoy a covering of leaf mould. Ask Eve

Eve Peacock is an internationally renowned Clairvoyant Tarot Reader and Palmist and has appeared many times on TV inc. ITV's "This Morning" She lives in Eastbourne, and is available for telephone readings. You can contact Eve on: 01323 643220 If you have a problem for Eve please email info@ evepeacock-visions.co.uk with a photo and your d.o.b. Your full name and photo will not appear in the column. Please make your question short and concise. Problems can only be answered on this page. Dear Eve, My daughter Cheryl and her family are desperate to emigrate to Australia. They have filled out the relevant applications and are waiting to hear. She is a nurse and her husband is a part-qualified accountant. They have two children, my grandchildren, Ben 7 and Emily 9. Can you see any problems? Also they want to sell their house before they go. Is that a good idea? We will miss them desperately but feel it will be a better quality of life for them and the children as they have really struggled here in the last few years. My twin sister, her aunt has been living there for 17 years. Cheryl is Scorpio and I am Gemini with Scorpio rising. Lorna, Battle Dear Lorna It's fascinating to me that you know enough about Astrology to know your rising sign/ ascendant. I'm also sun sign Scorpio and it makes you very determined. I have been asked about emigration numerous times especially in the last 3 years presumably to do with the recession though of course the recession is global. Yes, actually I can see them being allowed to go which is unusual for most of those readings I have done concerning this issue. I see this has been a two year process for them and it has been approached with a lot of research and preparation. What I would say is do they have to sell their house? My Tarot is saying that it would be better to keep the

"The Technical Itch" by Glenda Lock

I have always enjoyed going to the library. The people there are pleasant and helpful – almost friends by now – and however busy they are they always make time to discuss a reservation, look up a title or suggest where to look for some obscure subject. They are endlessly patient with the most arcane questions. Nice people! So off I went on this sunny afternoon to return some books which, by tomorrow, would be out of date. I knew they had been doing some major refurbishment work on the building. Every time I had passed by recently the car park had been busy with tradesmen’s vans, and I had been given a leaflet with my last lot of books explaining the temporarily reduced opening times and apologising for any inconvenience. This had not, however, prepared me for what I was to find. The first thing I noticed as I drove up was the beautifully resurfaced car park. Its bright new white lines positively twinkled in the sunshine. Very smart! The paved pathway leading to the entrance had been re-laid, all its slabs now safely and evenly aligned. Excellent! There was a new sign offering “Information” as well as library services. Good idea! I opened the familiar swing door and went in, looking forward to seeing a stylish and efficient new interior. I was stopped dead in my tracks. Staring at me from a few feet away was a malevolent-looking robot, its bright blue neon eyes daring me to walk past without feeding something into its huge, gaping mouth. I suddenly felt like a six-year-old child facing an irritable policeman. I also felt very sad. Books are friendly things. They can be comforting, stimulating, informative, entertaining, imaginative, inspiring. They are about being human. They talk to you one-to-one. They are companions, comrades, teachers, lovers, clowns. All human traits; all answering human needs. I have always thought of the library as the fount and source of all such spiritual food. Now a very inhuman technology

property and let it out. They would then have an income and an investment in the future. It will give a feeling of security also for those first few months when everything will feel disorientating in Australia. With or without the property in the equation I can see a positive response very soon and an opportunity to go in July next year. Best of Luck to them ! Dear Eve I'm almost embarrassed to write this but can't go on much longer. My boss John (who I know is an Aries) is very intimidating. He talks down to me in front of other members of staff, and undermines me whenever he can even at meetings where I am speaking. This isn't the first time he has been like this, a few people have taken out grievance procedures against him, but they seem to be covered up. I feel he has moved on to me as if it's my turn. He is making my life a misery. I am a Libra man aged 52. Andy St Leonards Dear Andy I have had four other similar letters about bullying in various forms since I started this column. I'm always amazed that there are certain individuals whose whole reason of being seems to be about exerting some sort of control or dominance over others. I feel for John this seems the only way he sees himself validated as a person. It must be exhausting for him but it appears he goes into every situation thinking it's a competition and that he has to force his will on everyone around him. Gentle Libra hates confrontation so this situation must be unbearable for you. I actually feel he is threatened by you as you are very good at what you do and also popular at work. I wish I could wave a magic wand and resolve this in a way that is fair, but in my Tarot it looks like a better job awaits you in a different environment. Do not see this as giving in, sometimes in life we have to pick our battles and if you went head to head with John, you would not win. But remember, there is such a thing as Karma!!

had insinuated itself between the books and me. Oh yes, the new robot is very clever! You put your returning books into its gaping maw and touch its staring face. Its circuitry somehow identifies all the volumes at once, without opening them, and tells you their titles. You are then told whether to place each book into the bin on the right (for routing back to a distant library) or to balance it on the mounting pile on the left, for replacing on the shelves of this one. Taking out new books is equally soul-less. Again, you insert them in the monster’s mouth together with your bar-coded library card. The books are identified, issued out to you, and a paper ticket printed telling you on what date they are due back. (Ah! Here’s the usurper’s weakness – it cannot date-stamp the labels.) But I, of course, have not brought my card with me, never having needed it before and knowing its number by heart in case there ever were any muddles. Nonetheless I boldly chose three new books and went to stand defiantly in front of the robot. It told me firmly that I must insert my card or it was no go. Impasse! Fortunately there was a helpful human standing nearby to whom I explained my problem. She directed me to a well-camouflaged desk in one corner where several bewildered customers were already assailing two other humans about their difficulties. When it was my turn I recited my library number and the nice lady quickly did the biz with the familiar old computer and told me, in a rather embarrassed way, that next time I really must bring my card. What is more, she date-stamped my books! “That’s one-nil to the humans,” I thought.

As a relative stranger to East Sussex (a resident for just 5 years) I found this book compulsive reading, and my inability to put it down caused me a number of late nights/ early mornings. The author has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the county in general, and the Eastbourne area in particular. The way in which the author writes about the area where he grew up, and the characters whose tales he relates in this book completely captured my imagination. This is not a "Marmite" book. I found nothing whatsoever to dislike about it, and have no hesitation in recommending this book as suitable reading for readers of the Golden Times magazine. - Frank "Have I got a story for you" and other works by the same author are available in good bookstores as well as online at www.crowsbooks.com WIN A VINEYARD TOUR AND WINE-TASTING!

80 & 82 Upper High Street Hailsham. 01323 842400 Whilst in Hailsham the other day we decided to pop into Callenders Restaurant for a spot of lunch. We had heard lots of good things about this restaurant recently, and had been recommended to visit by friends who had thoroughly enjoyed dinner here the previous night. Callenders has an all British menu and focuses clearly on local produce. Greeted with a genuinely warm welcome on arrival, the atmosphere, alive with the chat of diners and the clink of cutlery, was relaxed and calm. The layout inside was spacious and comfortable and totally wheel chair accessible. My wife was pleasantly surprised by the prices on the menu. All main courses were priced at a very reasonable £6.50. I had Whitebait to start, and the most delicious Liver and Bacon to follow. My wife chose Roast Duck from the extensive specials board, which she enjoyed very much. The desserts were fabulous too. All in all it was a great experience. This is a true gem of a restaurant and we think it is well worth a visit and we’ll definitely be back soon.

Golden Times Cover Photography by Golden Times Editor Jason Stubbs

Whenever we meet our readers at exhibitions and shows, the most commonly remarked upon feature of Golden Times is the cover photography. This is very flattering for me as I take the shots myself. I'm not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination, just a keen amateur lucky enough to be based in a very photogenic county! Many readers have asked us to provide details of the cover locations and this is something we will be doing in future, but we thought we'd take the opportunity here to provide you with some information on the images we've used over the past 12 months.

1. July 2013 - Eastbourne Sea Front

Though this may look like the height of summer it was taken in May 2012 The great British weather always keeps you on your toes, May can bring snow showers or heat waves.

2. May 2013 - Jack in the Green, Hastings

A riot of colour and noise, Jack in the Green is my favourite of Hastings' many regular events. This shot is from May 2012 when participants refused to let a bit of drizzle spoil the day!

3. January 2013 - Camber Sands

Taken on an exceptionally chilly Sunday morning in January 2011. Winter is my favourite time to enjoy the huge open spaces at Camber, nothing beats a bit of windy solitude by the sea.

4. March 2013 - Penshurst Place Gardens

From a damp Mayday in 2012 during a tour of the delightful gardens at Penshurst. May 2012 was clearly a good month for me and my camera! Judging by the feedback, this was the most popular cover with our readers.

5. September 2013 - East Hill Lift, Hastings

1

Taken on a beautiful, warm evening in September 2011. Wonderful golden light from the Indian summer sunshine.

6. November 2012 - Hastings Old Town

My personal favourite, shot in February 2012 during an early morning Sunday stroll with my camera. I hope you've enjoyed looking at these as much as I've enjoyed taking them. I'm always snapping with my camera and often post shots on the Golden Times Facebook page at www.facebook.com/goldentimesmagazine so why not pop along there and make friends! I'm hoping to get some shots of Cuckmere, Bodiam and Eastbourne for the New Year, so look out for those, gracing future Golden Times covers.
