ello again and welcome to the Winter 2012 edition of Golden Times which means the magazine has now been running for a whole year! We're hugely grateful to all the supportive and positive comments we've received since we started and it's been great to meet so many of our readers at Seniors Forum events this Autumn. In 2013 we'll keep trying to improve the magazine so if you think there's a way to make it better please let us know. Of course, without the support of our advertisers there wouldn't be a magazine, so don't forget to mention us if you use one of their services. On behalf of everyone at Golden Times I'd like to wish all of our readers a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year, enjoy the magazine!

Frank’s Column At the end of my last column I told you about the first night at my hotel on Fiji, and how a massive storm struck the area during the small hours of the morning. The storm abated around sunrise and, along with the other guests, I wandered around the hotel's gardens viewing the extent of the havoc that had been wreaked in just a few hours. What, the previous evening, had been an area of manicured lawns, tropical flowers, and shrubs was now a scene of devastation. It was a fairly sombre bunch of guests who wandered back to the hotel for breakfast, but while we ate, and conversed in muted tones a miracle began to unfold. Down the narrow road leading to the hotel reception area a whole crowd of locals, carrying a mixed variety of what appeared to be gardening tools, started making their way on to the garden area and began sorting things out. These wonderful people were, apparently, family members of the people who worked in the hotel, and had responded willingly to a call for help. When I continued on my travels 2 weeks later the place was almost back to normal. I had a number of lovely walks through the countryside surrounding the hotel, but after a few days I decided to venture a little further afield. I asked the receptionist if she could rustle up a taxi to take me into the nearest town, and with her usual dazzling smile she said,"No Problem". When the taxi arrived it turned out to be what sounded like a steam driven Lada, and by a coincidence the driver just happened

to be her cousin who was taking a load of fruit and veg to town in the back of the car!! Ah well, nothing ventured - nothing gained so off I went. We rattled along quite happily for a few miles, and then the driver said that as he hadn't been along this route for a long time would I mind if he just popped in to say hello to his aunt. What could I say?? This guy was about 6'-4"and 20 stone so I smiled, and said,"No Problem". Anyway when we got to aunties he left me sitting in the taxi and off he went. He was only gone a few minutes when, looking severely chastised, he came scuttling back down the path, and invited me inside to meet auntie. She turned out to be a lovely lady who made me very welcome, and produced some fine coffee, and cake. While I was there she never stopped berating her nephew for leaving me outside. I bet he wished he hadn't bothered!! When my time on Fiji was up I felt quite sad when I had to start saying goodbye to so many lovely people that I had the good fortune to get to know. Fijians are, by their nature, a warm and welcoming people, and I really loved my stay there. Finally I grabbed my backpack, and made my way to the airport to catch my 'plane to Tonga so until my next column watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living.

Local computer expert Neil Duncan says “the over 50’s are being left on the wrong side of the digital divide as a whole generation has missed out on the growth of the Internet.” He intends to reverse this trend by encouraging people in the East Sussex area to take up the challenge and have some computer fun. He is one of many newly recruited tutors who have been trained and appointed by Silver Training to provide a unique, oneto-one computer tuition service directly to people in their own homes. Silver Training is unique in that it focuses on ongoing training rather than merely fixing problems. Its network of tutors are all centrally managed, trained, vetted and branded. “We are all part of an established company”, says Neil, “which means clients can trust us and have faith in the service.”

Planning for the future

Last month, my wife and I took the long overdue step of seeking some professional advice on creating a will. It's one of those subjects that no one really likes to spend time thinking about, but not preparing properly for the inevitable can leave relatives and loved ones with unnecessary, difficult decisions to make. Aware of his excellent reputation locally, we contacted David Cowley of Collective Legal Solutions and arranged an appointment to take advantage of his vast experience. A week prior to his visit, we were provided with a list of things we needed to consider beforehand to enable things to proceed quickly and smoothly. From the very start, it became apparent that there were a number of things we really hadn't considered. It's not until you start to explore the possibilities and

pitfalls with someone who understands the process inside out. By the time of David's visit, we had a number of questions, all of which were answered with reassuring authority. With the meeting being held in our home, the atmosphere was relaxed and informal but efficient. Within a short period of time our questions had been answered and informed decisions had been made. Once the paperwork had been completed, we could now have peace of mind that our affairs are in order and our wishes will be clearly documented. If you need some help planning for the future we'd definitely recommend giving Collective Legal Solutions a call on 01424 854561 or 07967 159376 www.clshastings.co.uk

Would you like to try acupuncture but are either afraid of needles or simply do not like invasive treatments? Want FAST, lasting natural relief from pain and discomfort from the very 1st session? • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Back pain Sports injuries Joint pain Sciatica Arthritis Frozen shoulder Tennis elbow Infertility Impotence Heavy periods Anxiety Depression Asthma Glaucoma Migraine, etc.

Su Jok Acu Therapy the NO needle alternative. Relief from 1st session or don't pay!!! Contact Marilyn on: 07961 157609 www.painmanagement.me.uk email: sujokacu@gmail.com

Appointments available Michelham Unit, Eastbourne District General Hospital from November 2012

What is Su Jok Acu Therapy? It’s a system devised by a Korean scientist/philosopher that utilises the hands and feet as treatment areas for the whole body, but not to be confused with reflexology. Su Jok Acu Therapy is extremely fast acting for all complaints and conditions often giving up to 70-80% relief from the very first session. If a client presents with e.g. knee problems, an area on the middle finger is treated which will cause a wave of energy to pass to the pain area in the knee procuring fast relief from pain and discomfort. How is the Therapy Carried Out? The area on the hand or foot that relates to the area in the body that is either painful or malfunctioning is palpated with a probe. Through this examination, pain spots known as Ah Shi points, indicate the exact acu treatment area. Another method of Su Jok Acu Therapy is energy flow therapy which works in the same way as acupuncture but treatment is applied again to the hands or feet only, never the body. For needle phobics or people who simply do not like invasive therapies, we are able to offer a NO NEEDLE option that utilises magnets, an electro device or light stimulation. This method of treatment is safe for children. Learn to Help Yourself Naturally Workshops Additional to running my therapy practice, I am a fully qualified lecturer and offer one day workshops to people who would like to learn how to help themselves naturally for everyday complaints. Tricia’s Column

W

elcome to my first anniversary column ! It really doesn't seem like a whole year since we launched Golden Times, but it was November 2011 that it hit the shelves. To celebrate a year in print we've teamed up with Virgin Balloons to offer a wonderful reader competition, you can find out about on page 5. You can win an amazing balloon flight which would make a fantastic day out. I'll definitely be entering because I'd love the chance to see the countryside from the tranquility of a balloon.

Throughout the magazine we've collected the usual wide range of local events so you can see if anything takes your fancy, but if you're looking after your grandchildren in the festive season, don't forget to look out for the Family Buzz (pictured). The Family Buzz contains details of all the grottos, fairs and bazaars where you can take the children to meet Santa. He certainly gets about a lot for someone who was ancient when I was a little girl. He must make millions of toys every year and judging by the mess in my spare room, my grandchildren must own at least half of them! Maybe one of the little darlings will get me a Carr Taylor vineyard tour for Christmas so I can E! pick out a few bottles to relax me after they've FRE worn me out looking after them!

It feels as though I've barely unpacked after my summer holidays and already we're looking forward to Christmas! It seems to come around quicker and start earlier every year! As I have seven grandchildren to think of this year I suppose the earlier I start my Christmas shopping the better! Christmas also brings the pantomimes to town and there are loads on offer in the local area again this year. You'll find details of a couple of them on the opposite page and another on the back page of this magazine. We always make Christmas Eve our family Panto night. It really makes a great start to Christmas, the kids are excited and it's great for the adults to have an excuse to get dressed up and go out of the house. We all come back feeling just that little bit more "christmassy".

2012

As much as I love the wonderful family time we have at Christmas, I'm not a fan of the cold, I think my ideal Christmas dinner would be munching on a turkey sandwich lying on a sun-lounger on a tropical beach! Still before you know it I'll be writing my spring column and the days will be getting longer once again.

Dick Whittington is the Cat's Meow! Nothing cheers up the winter doldrums like a fantastic Pantomime with all the trimmings. For a great family outing that will have everyone howling with laughter, you can't beat The Hastings Stage Studio's production of Dick Whittington and His Cat at the Phoenix Arts Centre, December 6th - 9th. Back by popular demand, here's what critics had to say about the show in 2009: "Epic...a magical mix with the perfect balance of great songs, dance and humour...Who needs to import half-forgotten soap actors when you have this sort of quality right here...The quick-fire script cracks along at an amazing pace fitting in an incredible number of jokes and quips – none of them tired or stale... And, of course you still need a cast with the raw talent to pull it off -- the Stage Studio had it in spades... Spellbinding stuff!" -Hastings Observer, Dec 2009 This highly original production is not only hilarious and full of great singing and dancing, but excellent value, too, with Discounts for Children, OAP's, Families of 4 and Group Bookings. How would you like a toned, svelte silhouette ? We all know the only way to recreate the firm body of our youth is to spend 50% of our time in the gym, and the other half starving ourselves! Or is it? Over 90% of my clients complain about their bodies. Regardless of size or shape, they want more muscle tone and a way to eliminate unsightly bulges. I tell them the secret to achieving a smooth, strong-looking body, with no bulges, no muffin-top, no "back boobs" with zero (well, very little,) pain. I promise them they will look slimmer, have better posture and feel more glamorous. And it can be done in minutes. This miracle? Shapewear. Since the 1800s women have pushed, pulled and pummelled their bodies into corsets, cinches Michele helps a client and girdles. And, lets' be honest, create the perfect not just women! Men have the same layered look. issues with loss of muscle tone and the desire to keep their figure looking sleek. But Shapewear has come a long way since the days of "Gone with the Wind", when girls were laced into corsets that almost broke their ribs and possibly caused lifelong internal injuries. Today, you can apply the latest engineering technology to your sagging bottom and spreading tummy with the minimum of discomfort. Lightweight, breathable fabrics make wearing

Shapewear comfor table and even enjoyable. Yes, it may be a bit of a struggle the first time you wriggle into it, but you will see visible differences immediately. Dresses will flow across your body, trousers will sit on the waist with no overhanging rolls, panty-line and bra-bulges are things of the past. Figure-flattering garments are available for almost every part of the body and for every shape and size. It's not just for Gok Wan's collection those who are overweight. And it's not for Simply Be just for women. Shapewear for men has always been rather "under the counter" until now, but M&S have launched a new range for men which is flying off the shelf. In a new twist, designers are now making Shapewear sexy. No longer do you need to peel off your underwear before slipping into something "more comfortable". You can redefine your figure whilst wearing the most gorgeous lingerie. (For woman, at least. It might take a little longer to put pizzazz into mens long-johns!) Not sure where to get started. My advice is to start simple. A full length Shapewear slip is a great base. You can buy them on the high street, or get a much better range online. A Style Advisor can help you choose the right pieces to enhance your body and show you how to achieve the look you want. Want to find out more? I'm Michele Duke, a Style Advisor with a gorgeous collection of exclusive French clothes for women. Visit my Studio for the ultimate in Personal Shopping. The first 5 people to call me quoting "Golden Times" will receive a free 45 minute style consultation. See my website www.micheleduke.co.uk or call me on 07801 621310 to make your appointment

Lime Cross Nursery - Jolly Serious About Gardening With the onset of chilly autumnal evenings, now is the perfect time to think about planning the garden and seeking inspiration from your local nursery, garden centre or visitor garden to see some amazing colours. In particular, Liquidambar, ornamental cherries, Nyssa and Mountain Ash, which are favourites of ours at Lime Cross. There are plenty of jobs to be getting on with in the garden this autumn – that is, if your garden isn’t too soggy underfoot! Autumn is a really great time to get planting. Put in your spring bulbs; Crocus, Narcissus, Fritillaria, Bluebell and Tulip in pots or borders, or naturalise in and around your garden for an informal effect. The soil is still warm enough for them to develop a good root system. In the fruit garden, now is the ideal time to plant your fruit trees, fruit bushes, vines and nut trees. With so many varieties to choose from, and excellent for culinary use, which tree will you plant this autumn? If you already have fruit trees in your garden, pick the last of your apples and pears before the frosts set in and start winter pruning. Begin by cutting out any unproductive branches and dead wood. Cut back hard any new vertical whippy stems by at least a half which will help maintain the shape of the tree. Finish by cutting back new side shoots to about three leaf joints. However, always best not to prune any of the plum family (that includes cherries) as this can aid the spread of silver leaf disease.

22

Harvest your winter vegetables; parsnips (best after a frost), red cabbage, leeks and early brussels sprouts and protect any remaining brassicas from hungry pigeons with netting to avoid losing your Christmas veggies! Pick your remaining outdoor and glasshouse tomatoes, compost the stems and reuse your grow bags and containers for winter salad. Radish, lambs lettuce, rocket and other salad leaves are ideal. Green tomatoes make amazing chutney! Rake your lawn clear of fallen leaves; discard any fir and pine needles as these do not decay thoroughly. Create your own leaf mould - the best leaves include beech and oak which can be stored in an exposed area so the rain can aid decomposition. Protect tender plants from imminent frosts with bubble wrap, hessian, straw or fleece, and overwinter dahlias, lilies etc. Feed the birds! Don’t forget our feathered friends – they will be grateful for any tasty treats you put out which will boost their energy levels for the winter. Finally, the very real risk of roast hedgehog. These increasingly rare mammals are now finding places to hibernate for the winter and piles of material stacked up for Bonfire Night are ideal. So please, for the sake of the endangered hedgehog, build bonfires at the very last minute. Any hibernating hedgehogs need to be rehoused in a sheltered, dry, covered area of the garden.

The “Good Life” With Eastbourne Seniors Forum

Esther Rantzen presents award to Wealden Seniors

The “Good Life” event, which was held in the Congress Suite and Theatre Foyer throughout the day on Tuesday October 2, was opened by the Mayor of Eastbourne Cllr Mike Thompson. In addition to a full programme of dancing, displays, talks and demonstrations, there were some forty display stands from a range of organisations supporting and serving older citizens. Demonstrations included tap dance routines by ladies from U3A Central and the Willingdon School of Dancing, and belly dancing from the “Bohemian Belles” dancing troupe (pictured). Fred from the ESK gardening department gave a helpful talk on grafting, and other talks included mobility, eating for one, and recording memories. Amongst the services and support on offer were the Police Community Support, Fire Brigade, legal matters, health and care in your own home, wheelchairs , hearing, Trading standards, insurance, Museum service, Neighbourhood Watch, bowling, disability access and many others. Chairman Steve Thornett said “Our Forum is set up to provide our members with signposting to where they can access help and support and to provide them with a platform to express their concerns and judging by the response we received, we achieved our aims today”. To find out more, contact SteveThornett – 01323-479846

On 27 September, The Wealden Senior Citizens’ Partnership received a Highly Commended Award at the Digital Unite’s Spring Online campaign Awards Ceremony. More than 2,000 events were held nationwide in April 2012 and, for the second year running, the Wealden Seniors’ event was chosen as one of the finalists for the Best Event Award. This year there were 6 finalists, amongst them the DVLA and 3 major Housing Associations. Events Organiser for Wealden Seniors, Carol Hodge, said “We were the only voluntary organisations amongst the finalists, and our event was the only one organised by Silver Surfers for Silver Surfers. We were also the smallest organisation by far, so we are extremely proud to have been highly commended.” She added “The award also recognises the huge contribution from the staff and students of Heathfield Community College who worked with us to help around 20 older people learn how to use Skype, Facebook and Twitter.” Jackie Jackson and Carol Hodge are pictured receiving their award from Esther Rantzen, who was guest of honour at the ceremony. Advice for seasonal shoppers East Sussex Trading Standards are urging people to know their legal rights around purchases and presents this Christmas. So before you make your list and check it twice, please read our shopper's guide:

Your Rights to a Refund If anything you buy – from gifts to a new set of fairy lights – turns out not to be of satisfactory quality, fit for their purpose or as described, you have a right to return them and get your money back. You should tell the shop that you want to return the goods; while there is no set time limit, the quicker you report the problem, the easier it will be to get a refund. If you cannot return the item within a reasonable time then you may have to accept a repair or replacement instead. You may also have to provide proof of purchase so keep all your receipts safe. If you simply change your mind or the present is an unwanted gift then the retailer does not have to offer you a refund, an exchange or even a credit note. The good news is that most stores choose to provide a 'goodwill' returns policy, so it is always worth checking with them before buying.

Shopping from Home Buying online is one way of avoiding the Christmas crowds. Anyone buying mail order or online should make sure the trader gives clear information before ordering. This includes their name and address, written information about the goods, postage and other charges and a minimum seven-day 'cooling-off' period when the buyer can cancel their order without reason

26

and get their money back. Remember though that this doesn’t apply in some situations, for example if the goods were personalized for you, were perishable, or are not in the same condition as when they were delivered.

Amazing Bargains Beware of bargains or unrealistically low prices as the goods you receive may be fake or badly made, or you may never receive them. Take extra precautions when buying online, at auction sites, car boot sales and from overseas traders, double-check these offers and research the companies and products where possible. Among the most common fakes are designer labelled clothes, watches, perfumes and cosmetics, alcohol, DVD’s, computer games, and DIY tools – many of the items that will feature on Christmas lists this December.

Credit Card Protection When buying presents over £100 pay on your credit card for added security. The Consumer Credit Act makes the credit card company and the trader jointly responsible if things go wrong. So if the trader goes bust before you receive the goods or the contract is broken, you can make the same claim against the credit provider that you would have brought against the trader. But note this protection only applies to purchases made by credit cards, not charge cards or debit cards. And remember, these consumer rights are not just for Christmas. For more information or advice please contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 040506
