Frank’s Travels When I finally surfaced after my rather late night with my new found friends in the local hostelry at Lake Taupo I figured what I really needed was the local equivalent of a "Full English" to set me up for my journey south. I set the shower on full throttle, and after I had achieved some semblance of contact with the real world I dressed, checked that my head was still where it should be, and wandered aimlessly along the lakeshore until I caught the unmistakable whiff of grilled bacon... Bliss. By the time I got settled in the cafe the idea of a full English had worn a bit thin so I settled for a couple of very tasty bacon butties, and some coffee. I don't know what was in that coffee but it reacted like liquid caffeine, and I spent the rest of that day hyped up like the Duracell bunny!
related to the gallantry of Captain Charles Hazlitt. This incredibly brave young officer, while fighting with the New Zealand army in North Africa during WW2, didn't just win the VC, he actually won it twice, and lived to tell the tale. How rare is that? One of the lovely things about travelling on your own is that you can be totally flexible with your itinerary so after lunch on that day I decided that instead of travelling due south I would swing east in the direction of Napier which lies on the eastern seaboard. On my way there I saw a road sign for Hastings: Blimey I thought, I've taken a wrong turn somewhere!! It's amazing how many towns in New Zealand have good English names. When I got to Napier I popped into the tourist information, and spotted that there was an interesting little resort called Kaikoura just a few miles further up the coast. What made Kaikoura so interesting to me was the fact that a couple of the local boats were advertising "Whale Watching" trips with something like an 85% success rate of actually seeing whales. As my day was coming to a close I decided to stop the night in a local motel, and see what tomorrow might bring.
After loading my car, and squaring the bill for my stay I took my leave of Lake Taupo, and headed in a southerly direction. If any readers have been visiting in that area recently please forgive me if my geography or sense of direction seem a little erratic at times... it's age you know! My first destination on my journey south was to be the National Army Museum at Waiouru as, being exarmy, I have great respect for all things ANZAC. As it was around the middle of the week when I visited I found the museum virtually empty, and was able to browse at my leisure. One of the items in this lovely compact exhibition that really caught my imagination
That's all for now so until the next time watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living... Frank

“Love is a better teacher than duty”, Albert Einstien. You may feel you love one another but these days do you do things for each other out of a sense of duty? When you have been together for a lengthy time there may be a certain contentment and feeling of security in taking your relationship for granted. It may be that you just assume you will always be together and therefore not consider the need to demonstrate your love and appreciation of each other. On the other hand, if you think your relationship is suffering due to a lack of effort then maybe the New Year is a good time to take action and breathe some new life into it. Perhaps you could start by looking at how you spend your time together; for instance, are you together in the evenings? If so, does that involve having the television on and possibly not being switched off until bedtime? Perhaps it’s not just the TV that interferes with the communication between you, it could be that both of you spend time with your heads buried into your iPads, iPods, and/or iPhones and so on. It is impossible to give each other full attention when there is so much distraction. There are so many ways to show your love for each other and not just by saying the words ‘I love you’. Maybe giving a little gift once in a while or a card with some heartfelt words. Have you stopped bothering about your appearance and are you paying attention to your health and fitness? Being told how much you’re appreciated can have such a positive effect; how often do you say this sort of thing to your partner? It is so easy to neglect the small things and to forget how important it is to feel valued.
Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. More recently, she has spent time counselling with Cruse bereavement care and St Wilfrid’s Hospice as well as managing her private practice. Maybe it’s time to have some new experiences; travel to places you’ve never been, take up a new pastime, try something healthy that will benefit you both and it need not be expensive if lack of money is a consideration. Also, having your own interests can be advantageous and spending time apart could have the effect of bringing you closer together and therefore appreciating each other more. Commitment alone does not make for a happy, healthy relationship. We all need to feel valued, appreciated and loved, these feelings are essential in maintaining a healthy long term relationship. If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website www. juliameanwellcounselling.co.uk she can be contacted by email Julia.meanwell@gmail.com or give her a call on 07714 280083.

Eve Peacock is an internationally renowned Clairvoyant Tarot Reader and Palmist and has appeared many times on TV inc. ITV's "This Morning" She lives in Eastbourne, and is available for telephone readings. You can contact Eve on: 01323 643220 If you have a problem for Eve please email info@ evepeacock-visions.co.uk with a photo and your d.o.b. Your full name and photo will not appear in the column. Please make your question short and concise. Problems can only be answered on this page. Dear Eve My dad passed away 6 months ago and apart from some of his own scribblings, we were amazed to discover he has left no will. My mother passed 15 years ago so the estate should be left to my sister, brother and I and our respective children. Now my father's long-lost cousin has turned up and is staking a claim. I'm sick with worry and also annoyed. Can you see how this will turn out in the Tarot cards? Carole, Hastings Dear Carole, Firstly I am so sorry for your loss and as a sensitive Pisces, I can perfectly understand your stress and annoyance at this situation. In 30 years of readings I have seen this come up many times. Long-standing family feuds can be caused by issues to do with wills and inheritances. I'm also amazed that your father didn't leave a will as he seemed a meticulous man. I think it was an over-sight or he believed his own notes to be valid, though unfortunately I don't get a sense of them being accepted as legal. My cards say that this cousin has no legitimate claim on the estate (Judgement card) but with the 8 of swords coming immediately after he will manage to
delay proceedings for a while. I unfortunately see more conflict after with one of your siblings. Ask your dad for help that this situation my be sorted amicably and fairly. Dear Eve Can you tell me a bit about crystals. Is there one that could help me find my soul-mate? I'm a Pisces and haven't had much luck with relationships. Can you also tell me the best way to use it? Jenny, Hastings. Dear Jenny The right crystal to attract love into your life would be a piece of rose quartz. This stone is a lovely pink colour and an uncut piece would be more powerful. They say crystals pick us, so when you go into a shop where they are sold, see which crystal seems to stand out to you. When you take it home it is best to "cleanse" it in a glass or bowl of mineral water on a window sill preferably one that the sun shines onto. I find salt too harsh for crystals though I know a lot people who do use it for cleansing. It is best to soak it for a couple of days and it is said a good time is on the full moon. Then let it dry out in the open air. When you feel ready hold the crystal and "programme" it. This is to ask the crystal to work in a certain way for you. It is best to work with the crystals own qualities, so a rose quartz should be programmed for love. A citrine (a dark yellow stone) for example should be programmed for abundance or ease with money. Say "I dedicate this crystal to the highest good," which means it will work with the light, and then" I nominate this crystal to..." and put in your own desire for it. Carry your crystal around in your pocket, purse or handbag for about a month when it will need cleansing again. Someone once told me an element of a quartz crystal is used in a computer, therefore they have an amazing memory, a crystal will pick up the energy of anyone it comes into contact with, negative or positive.

Having suffered from back pain for many years, & having tried a variety of therapies, I was intrigued by the prospect of visiting Emma Ross to try Craniosacral Therapy. The treatment, which took place in a beautiful, warm room, is non-invasive and doesn't require you to remove your clothing. The therapy itself was gentle and involved Emma placing her hands on my body and sensing the tensions while helping to release them in a relaxing and comfortable way. The session of therapy enabled Emma to identify a number of different issues with my back which needed to be resolved. I found the whole experience very calming and left quite relaxed and a little emotional. I found the experience very beneficial, I will certainly be seeing Emma again.

SICK AND TIRED OF FEELING SICK AND TIRED?
3 TOP TIPS TO GET THE SPRING BACK IN YOUR STEP
1 Take a look inside your fridge – have you left the art of cooking behind you? Relying on ready meals? Cutting corners with sauces? Lazy dinners? Nothing beats a Roast Chicken, or a slow cooked Beef Stew – go on – COOK REAL AGAIN. Less Fat, Less Salt, Less Sugar in your diet and you’ll feel dandy in no time. Remember VEGETABLES? They aren’t a garnish! Eat LOADS. 2 Can you sit on the floor like you used to? Do you heave yourself off the sofa? Lean on the coffee table to plug the hoover in? Sounds like your body has got a bit RUSTY and whilst oil works nicely on a shed door - Pilates is a better option for us to get mobile again. Slow, controlled, supervised and almost always lying down on a mat – it’s a relaxing way for all ages and conditions to improve mobility. 3 Stressed, unhappy, anxious, snacking, processed food or bad sleeping habits all create hormone peaks in your body such as over production of insulin, adrenalin or cortisol – all quite toxic, and contributes to ‘bellyfat’. Take some TIME OUT for YOU, bed by 10.30, and ask for help if you are struggling with ANYTHING causing you anxiety.

Does a new year call for a new you? It might be weight loss, a healthier lifestyle or my personal favourite, a good wardrobe clear-out. We all love to set goals at this time of year. It should be easy, shouldn't it, but come the end of January most of us will have abandoned our resolutions and settle for another year with a wardrobe bursting with "nothing to wear". We'll spend 2014 wearing the same old favourites whilst 80% of our clothes never make it out of the closet and we'll fill our wardrobes with bargains and "musthaves" with little thought about creating a cohesive "look". How can we break out of this cycle? Change is hard and new habits take time to establish so here are a few fun tips to make it easy. Colour Up: Every week choose a new colour and wear something different in that colour every day. This will make you pull out tops, skirts and accessories that lie languishing at the back of the wardrobe, or wear that dress that you usually keep for special occasions. Upgrade yourself: Sort your wardrobe into a "hierarchy", with your poshest frocks at the top and your tattiest "never to be seen in public" items at the bottom. Label each level e.g. formal & dressy, party, office, lunch dates, smart casual, lounging around... you get the idea. Starting in the middle, downgrade everything one level, so what you would have reserved for lunch dates now becomes smart casual for shopping or going to the pub, and that party frock is now shown off at the office with a smart jacket. You'll start to wear all your best clothes more and, if you're very inspired,

NEW YEAR NEW YOU
you might toss out the bottom layer entirely. Fripperize (My favourite new word): Focus on the extras - jewellery, shoes, bags, scarves, belts, hats - and let the accessories carry your outfit. It's a cheap and quick way to change your look and you can afford to take a few risks. Friendship Test: Pull out a dozen items you haven't worn in the last year. Separate them into two piles (i) those you'd feel comfortable giving to a friend and (ii) those you know your friends would be horrified to receive. Pile (i) goes back in the wardrobe (ii) goes to the charity shop or the bin. After all, if it's not good enough for your friends, why is it good enough for you? Inside out: Every time you wear something hang it back in the wardrobe inside out. Make yourself a promise you will wear a new item every day for a week and not re-wear anything that's inside out for at least a week. At the end of the week turn everything back to normal and start again. After one month, extend the period to two weeks and keep on challenging yourself to wear more and more of your wardrobe. After a few months, remove all those items which have never been worn. Try these simple exercises, and I promise you will change your habits and, by this time next year, you'll look and feel very different - Michèle Want to find out more? Later Life Planning - The Times They Are a Changing! IFA and Long Term Care Consultant, Natalie Ringwood, writes as to how Later Life Planning has changed over the past decades and why it is so important to carefully plan in order to meet changing objectives and concerns: Later Life Planning has traditionally been a play in two acts! Act 1 is ensuring that our client has sufficient income to meet their expenditure requirements. The villain in Act 1 is the evil ‘Inflation’ who eats into fixed income. As Later Life Planners, we help clients generate an income stream that will hopefully retain its purchasing power as the cost of living creeps up. Financial security is the main priority. Act 2 is the Generation Game where we assist clients wishing to leave their assets to their family. The villain of the piece is Inheritance Tax and the 40% tax grab on assets held in excess of the £325,000 Nil Rate Band. However, planning objectives alter to reflect the wider changes in our society. Over the past decades the UK has seen a massive increase in life expectancy and with it, a growing need for care in later life. Discussions with retired clients will invariably turn to the possible need for future care and the funding of the cost of care.
Some Interesting & Relevant Statistics
According to a recent House of Lords report entitled ‘Ready for Ageing’ between now and 2030 there will be a doubling of the number of Britons aged 85 and over plus an amazing 50% rise in the number of people over age 65. There has been increasing demand for advice in respect of clients who require care provision, whether in their own home or in a care home facility. When helping our clients and their family, we regularly identify the same key issues: • The single biggest issue is that difficult decisions have to be made at a very emotional time for a family. The loved one who requires care will be anxious whilst sons and daughters who will often be the major decision makers, experience their own anxiety and feelings of guilt towards their loved one. •
All involved will find the whole experience of navigating the care system both challenging and in many cases a daunting experience. The questions are endless. What type of care is required? If I need residential care where will I be happy and settled? Can I afford the cost? What am I entitled to in terms of financial assistance from the State or the Local Authority? Will I have to sell my
home? Will I run out of funds in time to come, in which case will I have to leave the care home of my choice? Many clients and their supporting family become overwhelmed by the complexity of decisions which have to be made over a relatively short period of time. As a Long Term Care Consultant I have found that the emotional support I am able to offer is valued as highly as my professional advice. No one situation is the same and I therefore have to fully understand objectives and concerns in order to advise and create a personalised plan for each and every client. When advising a client and their family, I will need to take into account a host of planning considerations including: •
What types of care is available and what is the most appropriate option. I may need to plan for keeping couples together.
•
Do loved ones have the power to act? The need for Lasting Power of Attorney for finance & welfare.
•
Current legislation – Local Authority Support; 12 week property disregard; Deferred Payment Agreement; Self Funding and Local Authority assistance; 3rd Party Topups; NHS & State Benefits.
•
Funding the cost of care – ensuring continuous care may be guaranteed for life; leaving assets to love ones; IHT planning.
•
What about existing property – should the home be rented or sold? Who should be asked to sell the property? Should Equity Release be used to fund care in your own home?
•
Proposed new legislation.
•
NHS Continuing Healthcare regulations
On a personal note I take great satisfaction in supporting families to achieve their objectives and overcome their concerns. In the next issue I will present a case study which highlights challenging planning issues and how we were able to overcome them. Finally, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any advice in connection with Later Life Planning or if you would like a copy of our Care Fees Planning Handbook.

Whilst in Hailsham the other day we decided to pop into Callenders Restaurant for a spot of lunch. We had heard lots of good things about this restaurant recently, and had been recommended to visit by friends who had thoroughly enjoyed dinner here the previous night. Callenders has an all British menu and focuses clearly on local produce. Greeted with a genuinely warm welcome on arrival, the atmosphere, alive with the chat of diners and the clink of cutlery, was relaxed and calm. The layout inside was spacious and comfortable and totally wheel chair accessible. My wife was pleasantly surprised by the prices on the menu. All main courses were priced at a very reasonable £6.50. I had Whitebait to start, and the most delicious Liver and Bacon to follow. My wife chose Roast Duck from the extensive specials board, which she enjoyed very much. The desserts were fabulous too. All in all it was a great experience. This is a true gem of a restaurant and we think it is well worth a visit and we’ll definitely be back soon.

Game Pie Use any combination of game meat for a hearty and filling pie. Goes well with creamy mash. (Serves 6) 675g/1½lb mixed game meat such as pheasant, partridge, hare and rabbit, boned 225g/8oz venison steak cut into 2.5cm/1in cubes 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 red onions, peeled and sliced 120g/4oz smoked streaky bacon, de-rinded and chopped 120g/4oz chestnut mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 30g/1oz plain flour 1 bay leaf 1 orange, zest and juice 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly 300ml/½ pint chicken stock 300ml/½ pint red wine 340g/12oz puff pastry Salt and pepper Beaten egg, for glazing
Method: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan and cook the meat in batches until well browned. Once cooked, set to one side. Heat the rest of the oil and cook the onions for 5 minutes until they begin to soften. Add the bacon, garlic and mushrooms and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, add seasoning and stir in the bay leaf, redcurrant jelly, orange zest, stock and red wine. Bring the ingredients to the boil, add your meat, then simmer gently for 40-50 minutes ensuring
that the meat is tender. Leave to cool while preheating your oven to 200c or Gas mark 6. Put the filling into a pie dish, roll out your pastry to make a lid and attach to the dish, covering the filling. You may wish to use some pastry offcuts to decorate the pie lid at this point. Cut a steam hole in the centre of the pastry and glaze the top with a beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes before reducing the heat to 180c or Gas mark 4 for a further 30 minutes. Serve once the pastry has browned and risen and the filling is piping hot.
