Frank’s Travels

After clearing customs, and immigration in Changi International Airport I located the accommodation bureau and got fixed up with a place along Orchard Road in the direction of Tanglin. When I saw the sign for Tanglin my memory bank went into overdrive so when I settled into my room I sampled a few of the delights in the well stocked little bar, and let my thoughts wander back to 1955 when I first got off the troopship Asturias in Singapore harbour. Bearing in mind that I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast this morning I hope those of you who served in FARELF will forgive me if some of my memories are not as you remember. Put it down to senior moments!! In December 1954, and January 1955 I was sent to Derring Lines in Brecon along with a whole bunch of keen as mustard young junior NCO's. We then spent those two months up to our hips in snow and freezing our butt's off on the Brecon Beacons. A lot of our number called it a day but those of us daft enough to put up with it were granted two weeks leave, and told to report back to our depot. I didn't know it then but I was about to be on the receiving end of the army's perverse sense of humour because, having survived two months of Winter Warfare training, when I arrived back at the depot I was immediately issued with a complete set of Jungle Greens, and put on stand-by for the next troopship to Malaya. The smart-ass who fixed me up with this never knew what a favour he had done me because, among other things, I hated winter

weather, and couldn't wait to get to a warm posting although Malaya at that time was hot in more ways than one. Still, this is what I had signed up for so bring 'em on said the fearless L/ cpl ! My birthday, 3rd of March was spent on the upper deck of Asturias watching her glide quietly out of Southampton, and heading for our first port of call which was to be Port Said....... Egypt. I had learned at school about the rough sailing around the Bay of Biscay but in fact it was like a millpond. Unfortunately this didn't stop a lot of the troops from chucking their insides over the railings.....Some of them were affected so badly that when we got to Port Said they were off-loaded. At this point I would like to say that the food on board the ship was very good, and what with all these chaps not feeling up to eating a lot yours truly frequently got double helpings. Not very sympathetic I know but who would want to waste all that lovely grub, especially the fry-ups every morning!!! From Port Said we headed towards the Suez Canal, and a leisurely cruise down the canal into the Red Sea with our next port of call........Aden. I am running out of my allotted slot in the magazine now so I will continue my cruise in the next issue. Until the next time stay healthy, watch how you go and enjoy living. Frank

BEXHILL ROTARY GIVES JACKIE A SPECIAL AWARD At their annual President’s Night gala dinner at the Cooden Beach Hotel on the 13th of June, Bexhill Rotary Club’s President John Cooper and Bexhill Rotarian Roger Batey presented Jackie Haggerty with a Rotary Service Recognition Award in acknowledgement of her special service in the community. Back in 2009 tragedy struck Jackie and husband, Russell, when their 13 year old son suddenly died. After his death Jackie and Russell were in a ‘personal bubble’ of grief as they sought to come to terms with his loss in the absence of NHS or charitable counselling. Then a neighbour steered them towards the charity CRY, Cardiac Risk in the Young, and with their help and support slowly emerged from their ‘bubble’ so much so that they were energised to start fundraising which Jackie and Russell have been doing ever since. To donate or to find out about CRY’s bereavement counselling and research, go to www.c-r-y.org.uk. On top of all this activity, Jackie has been in charge of Bexhill Caring Community in Sackville Road for around the last 4 years. Always full of energy and commitment, Jackie has led the charity on to bigger and brighter things extending their services and overseeing the opening of a community room at the back of the Sackville Road shop where the charity operates from. To donate or to get involved with Bexhill caring Community, then just go to www.bexhillcaringcommunity.co.uk. As Roger Batey commented in congratulating her, “Jackie is always positive, a bundle of non-stop energy, full of smiles, nothing is too much trouble, in fact is a really valuable member of the voluntary community in Bexhill so this Rotary Service Recognition Award is so well deserved for all the work she has done and is doing for those in need around her.” If you want to know about Bexhill Rotary Club and its activities, then all you have to do is log on to www.bexhil.rotaryweb.org.

PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ The Ritz was indeed put on in style at the Azur when members of Hastings and Rother U3A celebrated their 25th Anniversary and allowed the Chairman, Sarah Loynes’ vision for the Branch to be realised. Sarah opened the celebration reminding members of the growth of the Branch of the U3A from its humble beginnings in a room in Hastings Library to its present 460 members. Members then enjoyed a varied and delightful musical programme from Gabrielle Manoukian [Soprano] and Bernard Perkins [Bass Baritone] accompanied by Stephen Page. Representatives from the two charities, the raffle was raising funds for, the Sara Lee Trust and the Fellowship of St Nicholas, highlighted some of the vital tasks they perform to help those in need. Fundraising is important to these two good causes, as they do not receive any government funding and they must have been pleased that the raffle raised £550. Sarah, wearing a hat for the occasion, like the Queen, unveiled a patchwork tapestry demonstrating the skills of the U3A sewing group who have been working on it for the last 13 months. It is to be displayed at the Falmer Campus of Brighton University as part of the South Downs Project celebrations, which inspired the subject matter of the tapestry. This was followed by a splendid full Afternoon Cream Tea with mixed sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, toast with gentleman’s relish, a selection of cakes and all with flowing cups of tea. It was indeed a very full tea, a veritable feast! Members were no doubt grateful to Sarah and to all the committee who worked so hard to ensure the success of this event and to the Azur for the excellent catering and service. Anyone interested in joining this thriving branch of the U3A should contact Sian Trevellion on 07970727.

The Computer Trainer By Neil Duncan

Tablets : Which one to take? In our new, regular technology column, local computer tutor Neil Duncan answers your pressing questions. Q: Help! My children want to buy me a tablet computer for my upcoming birthday but there are so many to choose from I am bewildered at the thought of it! What should I go for? A: Ever since Apple launched the iPad, tablets have been taking the world by storm. In 2015 it is estimated that they will overtake sales of laptops and desktops combined, which is incredible growth. Most commentators put this down to their intuitive ease of use, with touch-screens instead of a mouse and keyboard, plus great portability. For a beginner they are certainly a good learning option. Since the iPad many tablets have hit the markets. As ever, a lot comes down to your budget, but with this equipment the motto ‘you get what you pay for’ is certainly true. At the top end the iPad still reigns as the smartest looking and best working touchscreen of them all, but the new full size ‘iPad Air’ costs £399 upwards. A cheaper option is the new mini iPad, a smaller-screen version but still powerful, which retails at £249 upwards. Elsewhere the Samsung Galaxy Note has become a true rival to the iPad, with a fantastic screen and more flexibility with the programs (called ‘apps’) you can have on it. They start at around

£300. A whole host of cheaper tablets are now available from most high street retailers: Tesco’s Hudl laptop is very popular and has good reviews, as well as Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, both retailing at only £119 – but don’t expect the top-end quality of the iPad or Galaxy. That said, if you only want to send some emails, play music and do a bit of online shopping, you could do far worse than some of the solid lower-end contenders. Neil Duncan is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Hastings and Eastbourne area. He can come to your home for 1:1 lessons on any device and for any topic; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges are £35 per hour including training materials. Please call 01424 400 190 to enquire.

COMPUTER TRAINING FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART

‘From the comfort of your own home’ LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE

Anything can be done with just the ‘baby’ steps. If you are afraid, that is normal. We are always afraid of doing something wrong when we first start something new, but it gets better with time and a little bit of practice. All government services including benefit forms will only be available on line in couple of years, quoted in the ‘Daily Mail’ by the minister Francis Maude. So it makes sense for you to start thinking about getting on line to make sure you are not left behind, and to be ready when these changes may happen. The Internet opens up many opportunities to curb loneliness. If you are on your own, then it will give you a chance to ‘chat’ on line using social media sites. We hear so many things about computer fraud these days, but I can show you, step by step, how to be safe on line. It is an essential part of my training. If you want advice on which computer to buy or simply want to know more, please call me for a friendly chat. Your friendly local qualified trainer ‘Roxi’ 01424 852299

Quality training is now being offered locally at reasonable prices by your local friendly ‘lady’ tutor who is very patient and can help you master the computer at your own pace without any fear. Whatever your interest, ‘one to one’ training will be tailored around your need in the comfort of your own home. Please call me for a friendly chat. T N ngs I cover all East and West Sussex areas.

A heart that loves is always young – Greek proverb Martha Stewart the 72 year old American lifestyle guru considers 70 is nothing like the 70 of 20 or 40 years ago, she says 70 is the new 50! I couldn’t agree more and I guess because I’m one of the baby boomers I feel that there is so much more opportunity for us than there was for our parents’ generation. So if you are single, divorced or widowed and feel that you’re too old to start dating again in later life, think on! We are now in the age where we have a wider range of choice through online dating sites; they are no longer the privilege of the younger generation. Apparently the number of over 55’s that use online dating services has risen by 39%. We live in a great part of the country where there are umpteen clubs you can join. Whatever interests you have you can bet there are like-minded people that will share that interest or maybe you will want to learn a completely new activity. We’re living longer and generally healthier lives so why not grab the chance to live this life we have to the fullest and not opt for tiptoeing safely to the grave. It may seem like an impossible challenge to start over again but broadening your social life can reawaken your zest for life. New research shows that couples in the golden age bracket feel happier, healthier, safer and more comfortable than those that are on their own.

Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. I am not suggesting that you can only lead a happy, healthy life within a relationship. I think what I am trying to do is encourage those that miss having a companion to just go for it. Before you embark on a new partnership it is worth honestly considering whether you feel ready or if you feel like you have some unfinished business from past relationships? Counselling may be an option worth considering. It is far better to enter a new partnership in a healthy emotional state after having worked through some of the previous issues. If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website www.juliameanwellcounselling.co.uk she can be contacted by email Julia.meanwell@gmail.com or give her a call on 07714 280083.

Gardening tips for Mid-Late Summer by Phoenix Gardening. The birds are singing and the sun is shining what a wonderful time of year to be out in the garden. There’s nothing better than a garden full of birdsong and fragrance from all those lovely blooms, unless of course you suffer from hayfever. As always there are things to do as well as soak up the sun. Dead heading border plants and lilacs (when they’ve finished flowering) will not only keep them looking nice but keep them healthy and also in some cases prolong flowering. Mowing the lawn probably goes without saying but if we’re heading for a dry spell raise the cutters a notch and leave it a little longer, or leave cutting until you have to or can’t bear it any longer. It’ll save scorching it. As summer progresses we can think about ordering in those bulb catalogues and bulbs ready for an autumn delivery. Now is the time to start feeding pot plants regularly and as you do look out for pests and diseases. Whilst in the vegetable garden keep a wary eye out for caterpillars, we could also start to plant out any late cauliflowers, winter cabbages and leeks.

Ask Eve

www.evepeacock-visions.co.uk

Eve Peacock is an internationally renowned Clairvoyant Tarot Reader and Palmist and has appeared many times on TV inc. ITV's "This Morning". Eve works from her shop "Psychic Visions" in the Labyrinth Shopping Parade, 7 Mark Lane, Eastbourne where she will be available for private consultations. £5 off with copy of Golden Times. Tel 01323 658174/07807637784 Dear Eve I am just about to retire from the police force but am only 58 and don't want to stop working completely. I have an idea for a small business and wonder if you can pick anything up about it and whether it may be a good idea. I have quite a good pension but don't have a lot of capital and don't want to waste the small amount of money I have in savings. On the other hand this is something I've wanted to do for a long time and is close to my heart. Jenny, Sun sign Cancer from Battle. Hi Jenny When I read your letter I closed my eyes and all I saw was flowers so I am wondering if this new venture is something to do with floristry. Cancerians have a lovely link with nature and the outdoors with a significant number becoming gardeners and horticulturists. I agree that you are too young to retire fully and I wouldn't worry about finances too much but try and trust that you will be led to making the right choices. Sometimes we have to take a chance to fulfil our heart's desire and with the Magician showing in your Tarot, I would say you need to do just that. I don't see a huge financial outlay to get this idea going but I do see some studying just to hone your skills though there is a natural talent here showing and a wonderful creativity within you. Good Luck. Dear Eve After my husband and I divorced 6 years ago I haven't had anyone in my life romantically and wasn't too worried about it either.

Recently though I have been thinking more and more about companionship and maybe a partner. I joined an on-line dating web-site for over 50's and communicated with a few people but recently met someone on there where I feel a real spark. The problem is he lives about 30 miles away and it appears very hard for him to get time off to come and meet me. Am I wasting my time? Elissa, d.o.b. 01/03/51 Hailsham Hi Elissa In your longer letter I have more details about your friend including a photo. Well done for being brave enough to do something about trying to find someone but the issue really is that you haven't actually met this gentleman and don't really know him to even judge if there is a spark. Messaging on-line is very different from even talking on the phone so be careful about romanticising this situation into more than what it really is at this stage. I get a sense that this man is communicating with a few ladies and to be honest and at this point in his life, isn't seriously looking for a relationship. 30 miles isn't really that far, in my experience men will move heaven and earth when they really want something. My intuition is that I would keep this friendship going but explore other possibilities and maybe with the contacts on the dating site, don't worry too much about looking for a partner at the beginning. I see in my Tarot at the end of September you connecting with the King of Cups which is indicative of an honest, genuine man who in time would be offering more than friendship. It's possible he is another Water Sign as you are being a Pisces so there would be an immediate understanding of each other. It also appears that you are introduced through friends. If you have a problem for Eve please email evepeacockpsychic@ gmail.com with a photo and your d.o.b. Your full name and photo will not appear in the column. Please make your question short and concise. Problems can only be answered on this page.

SUMMER DRESSING FOR MEN

My husband recently retired after 30 years teaching. People keep asking me what he will do with himself now he doesn’t have such an all-consuming occupation and, at only 59, he still has plenty of life left in him. But I have other concerns. It is not what he is going to do in the next few years that worries me however, but what he’s going to wear!

Football shirts are not clothes and should never be mistakenly worn in public. (This applies in summer, winter, world cup season and every other day for eternity!) T-shirts with band dates from 1985 could also become useful dusters. In the same vein, please always wear a top unless you are on the beach or in your own garden. Socks are a sartorial statement and the right pair will look fabulous with elegant shoes and tailored trousers or shorts. They never, ever, ever, look right with sandals. And why wear sweaty trainers when you can look glamorous in deck shoes or cool loafers?

Tricia’s Column ummer is well and truly here again and I've been enjoying the light evenings and warmer weather. Whether it's pottering in the garden or strolling by the sea, it's great to be outdoors as much as possible. This year there is an added incentive for me to get out and about, and that's to escape the incessant coverage of the world cup! You can't even watch an advert break at the moment without seeing some overpaid buffoon in shorts kicking a ball about... As I mentioned in my July column last year, summer is "birthday season" in my family, with several of my grandchildren and grand-nieces having summer birthdays. It's also my father's birthday during June and this year he celebrated reaching the grand old age of 90! Still independent and active, he's an inspiration to us and it was great to see him surrounded by his ten great grandchildren at his birthday party, even if he did insist on having the world cup on! It's wonderful for all of his great-grandchildren to have a connection with someone who has lived through so much history and fought for his country during World War 2. school is all very well, but it's no substitute for listening to stories told by someone who was there! East Sussex really seems to come alive in the summer, as you'd expect from a county with such a beautiful coastline. There ! seem to be carnivals and E E FR festivals every other week so it shouldn't be hard to keep the children occupied in the summer holidays for those of us who will be on grandparent duty. As well as all the wonderful days out and events featured here in Golden Times, be sure to pick up our sister magazine, the Family Buzz (pictured here) which focuses on things to do for the little ones. The summer 2014 edition features my beautiful granddaughter, Lily, on the cover, posing on the platform of the Lavender Line steam railway in Isfield. Whatever you get up to this summer, have lots of fun and do make sure you mention us at Golden Times if you're visiting somewhere you found in our pages. See you again in September!

HIGH SUMMER AT PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS ‘One of the finest gardens in England’ the award winning gardens at Pashley are open until the end of September from Tuesday to Saturday and Special Event Days. Whenever you visit there is something to delight the senses – the herbaceous borders are at their best in July, August and September with wonderful dahlias, lilies, asters and a second flowering of roses. As well as coming to see the beautiful gardens you should ‘allow time to sample the fabulous homemade food and warm hospitality at arguably the best garden café in the county, much of which is sourced from the abundant kitchen garden’ (Leigh Clapp in ‘Sussex Life’). July and August have been called ‘Lily Time’ because there are hundreds of lilies Photograph courtesy of Leigh Clapp planted in the gardens and woodland, which come into flower over these two months. Then, at the end of August, over the bank holiday weekend, Pashley is host to the Sussex Guild Craft Show when there will be over 40 stalls showcasing work of the highest quality for sale from local designers/ makers. "Making Tracks" by Rosemary J Shelfer

The train wasn’t too crowded so Anna took her time choosing a seat where a window was already open. She carefully put her overnight bag in the luggage rack and sat down, watching the other travellers board the train and get themselves settled. Five minutes later, the train pulled out of Victoria Station and she wondered how this important day would turn out. Anna was on her way to meet her fiancée to discuss wedding plans. A few stops later, a familiar face appeared along the gangway. It was a friend from her schooldays. Now what was his name? Bill, that was it! She remembered in time to greet him with a light, “Hello, Bill. Long time no see!” He sat down and they started to chat about what they had been doing lately. When she told him of her engagement and mentioned her fiance’s name, a very worried look spread across Bill’s face. “He sold me my last car,” he said. “It had so much wrong with it, it cost me a fortune to get it sorted out! When I complained to him, he just smiled and shrugged and told me that’s the way life IS sometimes!” Anna’s face fell. There had been a couple of instances of deceit she had uncovered about her fiancé, Julian, which had been niggling at the back of her mind. Bill touched her hand gently and said, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this but …” He paused, embarrassed. “Go on, tell me,” urged Anna. “He’s such a liar, Anna,” Bill said softly, looking away. She didn’t know what to say. The train pulled into a station and he took his hand away. The sympathetic

moment came to an abrupt halt. “Anna, I’ve got to go. This stop is mine.” A few strides towards the door, and he was gone, without a backward glance. Once Bill was further down the platform, where Anna couldn’t see him, Bill took out his mobile and rang his friend, Julian. “Job done,” he said. “I’m pretty sure you will be dumped by the end of the day!” “Thanks, mate,” laughed Julian. “I didn’t mind being engaged, but as for getting married…count me OUT!” Anna sat very still, staring out of the window. She had had her doubts about Julian, certainly. But she thought that was just ‘wedding nerves’. Was she sad? No. Happy, then? Not really. Relieved. That was the word. An overwhelming sense of relief flooded through her. She looked down at her left hand and a smile spread over her face. “Nice ring, though.”

PAYING FOR YOUR LATER LIFE CARE: FUNDING OPTIONS For those who require care and have low levels of capital, their Local Authority will contribute towards the shortfall in the cost of care when relevant capital falls below the upper threshold of £23,250. This contribution will increase as relevant capital falls to the lower threshold of £14,250, at which point 100% of care costs will be met by the Local Authority (in line with Local Authority Rates). For someone who may have relevant available capital (for example up to £500,000 including the sale proceeds of a home) there are a number of options available. Option 1 Drawdown capital to fund the shortfall until the upper threshold of £23,250 is reached, at which point the Local Authority start to contribute. The big disadvantage of this, is there is a high risk of eroding capital that you may have intended to pass on to the next generation and the possibility of having to move to a cheaper care home when the Local Authority start to contribute. Option 2 By careful selection of an appropriately structured care plan, the shortfall in the cost of care will be paid FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE in return for a one off capital payment to the care plan provider. The major advantage of this is you can potentially cap the cost of quality lifetime care. This will enable you to remain in the care home of your choice, while retaining funds that maybe left

within your Will to the next generations. For those with higher levels of capital, by investing a proportion into income generating funds, the shortfall in the cost of care can be met. Any remaining capital can be invested into a choice of Inheritance Tax Saving plans that will potentially increase the capital left to your family.
