ello and welcome to the latest edition of Golden Times. As I write this introduction, snow is still falling outside, but hopefully, by the time you're reading the magazine, spring will have made it's presence felt and the gardens and parks will be bursting with Daffodils and Tulips. Last time we were offering the chance to win tickets to see "La Bohème" at the White Rock Theatre, the lucky winner was Mrs E Harman of Eastbourne. On page 27 of this issue you'll find this month's competition which offers readers the chance to win an interior designer for a day! Good luck to all of you entering the draw. As ever this issue is packed with things to do, places to go and details of local businesses offering a wide range of services. Enjoy the magazine, and don't forget to mention us if you're responding to an advertisement or attending an event!

Frank’s Column Memories of Tonga. (Part 2) After a good nights' sleep followed by a hearty brekkie I decided to take myself off on a familiarisation stroll around the area close to my hotel. The hotel information desk didn't have a map of the local area so I found myself wandering around like some lost soul until I eventually came across a small information bureau. As usual I found the locals to be amazingly friendly, and helpful and I was rapidly plied with a mountain of brochures. As the sun was, by now, well over the yardarm I decided to retire to a remedial font to browse through my newly acquired information whilst quenching my thirst. After an hour, and feeling suitably refreshed, I set off map in hand to explore some of the highlighted structures on the map I had been so kindly supplied with. Imagine my surprise when the first "Building of Interest" turned out to be the embassy of the Chinese Peoples Republic! I suppose it was interesting in that it was a huge single storey structure with more aerials on the roof, and in the surrounding gardens than NASA? All the other countries with a diplomatic connection in the area including the UK, Australia and New Zealand seemed content with local ready built structures as Consulates. Continuing my wanderings I couldn't help but notice the large number of churches in the area. It seemed that in the Kingdom of Tonga there is great religious tolerance although there was no sign of a mosque. Apparently the king who is not only supreme ruler, but a staunch catholic, has vetoed the construction
of mosques. Bearing in mind my visit was 11yrs ago this may now have changed. The kings' religious faith probably explained the fact that the catholic church in the capital was grander than the royal residence?? During my stay on Tonga it became apparent how big a part religion played in the lives of the locals. To me it was almost like being in a time warp: It was like my hometown in Ireland where I was but a callow youth. On Sunday Tonga, like Ireland, went to church. All places of entertainment including pubs were closed, and the "Entertainment" in the hotel was a performance by the local Presbyterian church choir!! I very smartly retired to the balcony of my room, and cuddled up to some of my duty free. I am not a religious person so I found it quite amusing as I passed a cemetery, and saw large banners on fresh burial mounds with signs reading things like, "Say Hello To God For Me" and, "Have a Safe Journey"? As I finally left my hotel for the return journey to the airport in a Starsky & Hutch look alike taxi I can honestly say I wasn't going to miss the place, but I knew that my next destination of Cook Island was going to be a different kettle of fish. So, until then watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living.

‘Don’t be Afraid of the Mouse!’
Don’t be afraid of the Mouse! A little computer knowledge can make a big difference. Local friendly tutor. Lessons in your own home. Emailing, shopping online, researching information, photos and more.....
Call now on 01424 400 190
Are you staring at a new computer which has found its way into your house? Did someone give you a gift that hasn’t been touched? Perhaps your old computer is still crying out to be used properly?! Either way it’s there and it’s eyeing you up suspiciously! When this happens we worry about how to use the thing properly, getting stuck and not recalling what to do or where to start. Firstly, concentrate on what interests you the most. There is no point learning things that you don’t need to. Make a list of what you want to do: email friends, do the grocery shopping, research hobbies? “But hold on!” (I hear you say) “What’s an email account? Is it safe to use my credit card online? Turn it on and off? I have to do that too??!!!” Fret not. As Silver Training’s East Sussex tutor I will set you up and guide you through what interests you the most with step by step lessons at home. We will plan your learning to suit what you wish to get out of your machine. I come to you so you don’t even have to leave the house! So put those excuses away…..and have a lesson to get started today! (we even throw in free training material in case you can’t remember what you have learned!) I am part of the UK’s largest network of home computer tutors, Silver Training, am fully background checked and already have many happy clients in the area! Call now on 01424 400 190 to book a lesson or visit www.silvertraining.co.uk Neil Duncan, Silver Training Tutor for East Sussex and surrounding area
Protect your assets
There is a question playing on the minds of many older people these days, along the lines of: “We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the local authority get it all?” If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home costs, on average, £36,000 a year. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care may seem a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.
Married Couples: A legal trust arrangement within your will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose. Widowed/Single: The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now. “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children.” What would happen if your child/children were to experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? Did you know that capital gains tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right, call Collective Legal Solutions on 01424 854561 or 07718 155740 www.clshastings.co.uk

Polegate-based singers present £900 to charity Polegate-based South Downs Singers have presented a cheque for £900 to a charity providing sheltered accommodation for older people in Eastbourne, Heathfield, Hove and St Leonard’s-on-Sea. The funds were raised at a concert at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Blackwater Road, Eastbourne, on December 15. South Downs Singers president Roger Malley presented the cheque to the chairman of Abbeyfield South Downs Ltd, Mr Michael Staff, on Tuesday, January 29. Mr Staff said: “We are very grateful to the Singers for their support which will help us to continue our work which is all about alleviating loneliness among older people. “Fund-raising such as this, donations, and a lot of work from volunteers means we are able to offer accommodation to our residents for around £1,000 a month, considerably less than that charged by most commercial organisations. “The fee gives them their own room, access to shared areas and covers heating, lighting and food. The only extra cost would be a personal telephone. “Our residents are able to enjoy independence, have support when needed and, most importantly, enjoy the companionship of others – all without the everyday
cares of managing their own homes.” Mr Malley said the Singers were pleased to support Abbeyfield South Downs at concerts held each year. “The St Andrew’s concert was wellattended and a great success. I am glad the funds are going to such a good cause.”
Abbeyfield South Downs chairman Michael
The next concert Staff, left, is pictured accepting a cheque president of the South Downs Singers from the South from Roger Malley. Downs Singers will be April 13 at St Andrew’s URC Church, Eastbourne. The programme will include the Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ and the Pergolesi ‘Stabat Mater’. For more information about the South Downs Singers see their website here: www.southdownssingers.co.uk or contact Roger Malley by email at: roger@pmalley.freeserve.co.uk.

Bereavement after a lifetime together - ‘A Good Innings’? You may have shared a lengthy relationship but does it mean you will find grieving easier or death more acceptable than for someone who is bereaved at an earlier age? Kind-hearted people will offer you words of comfort, some may utter the all too familiar term ‘they had a good long life – a good innings’. At this point, you may even agree or, you may feel like screaming. There are considered to be certain emotional stages that we go through when we are dealing with loss and grief but our experiences are as unique as the relationships we have lost. Sometimes there is intense anger and perhaps a blaming of self, friends, relatives, medical staff and even the person who died. Guilty reflection on what was or wasn’t done or said and maybe some guilt at the relief you feel that their pain or illness is finally over. If you offer support to the bereaved please do keep in mind that what you think they may feel could be so different to what is really being experienced. Spending time with them is important, so too, is providing some space for them to express their grief. Special events and anniversaries can be a particularly difficult time so try and be available on these occasions. Practical help is also a good way to offer support perhaps with shopping or there could be an overwhelming mound of paperwork that needs attention. Finally, don’t expect the bereaved person to move on too quickly, time is essential.
Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. More recently, she has spent time counselling with Cruse bereavement care and St Wilfrid’s Hospice as well as managing her private practice. An extremely important event in the emotional journey of bereavement is the funeral, at which point the intense reality of loss may emerge. When should you seek professional help? Death is inevitable and inescapable for us all; however, it remains one of the most difficult things to talk about. If you feel that you are struggling to come to terms with the emotional and practical changes that bereavement brings then maybe you would benefit from some professional counselling support. Bereavement can be extremely painful and unlike a physical condition there is no quick fix to feeling better. If you would like to contact Julia to find out more about the counselling she offers then please either email Julia.meanwell@gmail.com or give her a call on 07714280083.

5 Minutes with... Liz Jeffries
We spoke to Liz about the Alexander Technique and how it may benefit those wanting to continue an active lifestyle. Golden Times - What is the Alexander Technique? Liz Jeffries - It is an educational method that looks at everyday movement habits, and how you can change them for the better. Golden Times - How is the technique taught? Liz Jeffries -By one to one lessons or group sessions, both are very effective. Golden Times - How long are the lessons and how many will I need? Liz Jeffries - A lesson lasts 30-45 minutes. The number of lessons depends upon the individual. I would assess this through observation and talking about your issues. Golden Times - What happens in a lesson? Liz Jeffries - I observe posture and movement. I gently place my hands on your neck, shoulders and back. I also check your breathing and movement whilst you are walking, standing and sitting. You don’t have to remove your clothes. There is no manipulation. Golden Times - Who can benefit from learning the Alexander Technique? Liz Jeffries - People of all ages, professions and lifestyles can improve their quality of life, whether they are experiencing pain or wanting to enjoy life more. Golden Times - Why do Alexander Technique lessons help? Liz Jeffries - AT releases unnecessary muscular
16
tension, of which you may be unaware. These tensions can affect breathing and posture. Golden Times - Where can I have AT lessons and how much does it cost? Liz Jeffries - There are group sessions, walking sessions, one to one lessons, plus a special Mums & Bumps Session. Hastings/St Leonards, Bexhill, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells have various sessions available. Prices start at £25per person.(Lower for group sessions)

Sponsored walkers set £1,000 fund-raising target Sponsored walkers hope to raise £1,000 for charity by trekking about 60 miles from St Leonards-on-Sea to Canterbury. Ian McNulty, manager of an Abbeyfield South Downs house at St Leonards, leads a team out each year to keep a mini-bus on the road for residents. He hopes between 15 and 20 people will accompany him this year. Two years ago the Abbeyfield Ramblers, with an average age of 73, raised about £ 1 6 , 0 0 0 t ow a rd s buying a replacement mini-bus by walking 92 miles to St Albans where the Abbeyfield charity has its national headquarters. Last year they walked about 40 miles from Ridge House to Hove to help cover running costs. Mr McNulty, manager at Ridge House, 27 Boscobel Road, for 16 years, said: “The mini-bus is a life-line for residents, who are aged in their 80s and 90s, helping them to get out and about.” The walk will begin on Thursday, April 18, and finish in Canterbury on Tuesday, April 23. Tricia’s Column
I
'm so glad to be finally saying goodbye to Winter and hello to daffodils and crocuses (Or is it croci ?) as Spring arrives. To celebrate, I've had my column decorated with some lovely Easter Ribbons... I managed to avoid some of the colder weather by dashing off to Morocco for an all too short break but I'm glad to see the buds and blossom back on the trees again. If you're a keen gardener like myself, you'll be interested in getting out and about to the local parks and gardens for inspiration. Pashley Manor and Michelham Priory on the opposite page are excellent examples of this. Don't forget to take a look at the informative article from Lime Cross Nursery on page 22 though. With the Easter holidays coming up at the end of March, those of you looking after grandchildren should keep an eye out for the Spring edition of the Family Buzz Magazine (pictured here). If you fancy treating the kids to a day out instead of an Easter egg, the Family Buzz is a fantastic place to look for ideas. Not only that, but it also has my delightful Granddaughter as it's cover star. m he fa

While we're on the subject of little ones, thanks to my wonderful grandchildren, I now have an escaped hamster roaming my house. Where it is, no one knows but he's certainly not in his cage. Maybe he will come out of hiding as the weather warms up but he'll find a new hamster has taken up residence in his nest if he does. A spring in the step at Michelham Priory Gardens After a long winter of wet and cold weather, the onset of spring is always something to look forward too in gardens everywhere, but is particularly special here at Michelham Priory. At this time of year with the previous season displays cut down and tidied away the garden is a canvas of green awaiting the first splashes of colour that herald the beginning of a new Flowering year. The crocuses and hellebores are beginning to battle their way into bloom providing the motivation for the priory gardeners to struggle on a few more weeks, until daffodils and tulips, snakehead fritillary’s and crown imperials, snowdrops and grape hyacinths finally break the surface of the soil. These bulbs push their way up between primroses, violas, and wallflowers, and reward us with colourful carpets of colour, beneath flowering trees of magnolia, cherry, and apple and the buds and catkins of willows. The garden provides a warm and cheerful foreground to the majestic backdrop of the house, Elizabethan barn and mile long water filled moat, fed by the river Cuckmere. The Moat has been the focus of a lot of hard work during the winter period. As the beginning of a larger project to control some of the aquatic plants that thrive within it and improve the volume of water available to our working watermill, we have had a large section cleared along the Eastern side of the gardens. This has provided us with a long stretch of water where moorhens, ducks, swans and other wildlife that have made Michelham their home can now be enjoyed going about their nesting preparations, beneath native willow, alder, ash and oak trees that grow along the moat walk. With nature so busy at this time of year, underneath the gentle warming of the sun it is a time at the priory which is too good to miss.

LIME CROSS NURSERY ~ JOLLY SERIOUS ABOUT GARDENING Hooray! The spring months of March and April bring warmer weather and longer days, with the clocks going forward, Easter holidays and the anticipation of a busy, yet fruitful, season in the garden again. It’s the time to sow, propagate and plant. Bursts of new life will begin to appear as spring bulbs start to flower including snowdrops, crocus, tulips and daffodils. Native bluebells cannot fail to please, and a bluebell walk is an absolute must whilst they are carpeting our woodlands! Wash down your greenhouse and cold frames, making any necessary repairs, and clean up your pots and seed trays in preparation. Purchase extra sundries from your local garden centre, including seed, fertilisers and compost. Fertilise your shrubs and trees now if you haven’t done so already. Lime Cross supplies a good choice of organic and chemical liquid and granular feeds for all plant types – our staff can advise which is best for yours. Apply general fertiliser to borders before mulching. Prune your roses and spray for black spot, and prune your fruit trees while they are dormant, as well as gooseberry and currant bushes. These would benefit from a feed of compost around their base. Winter jasmine, forsythia, honeysuckle, camellias and rhododendrons can also be pruned after flowering. Divide and transplant snowdrops after flowering and summer flowering perennials. Keep an eye on any weeds which may be starting to appear. Remove seed heads from
22
tulips and daffodils after flowering which will encourage bulb growth. Don’t tie the stems as this inhibits the flow of nutrients to the bulb - you can cut back the browning stems at ground level 4-6 weeks after flowering. Plant your summer flowering bulbs, starting them off in the greenhouse, and stagger the planting of some varieties to enjoy a longer flowering season. Dahlias are excellent border or bedding plants, are good for cut flowers and many are bee-friendly too, so well worth considering. Vibrant lilies, narine, canna, gladioli and ranunculus, plus many more, can be planted now - Lime Cross has a great selection. Scarify the lawn to rake out dead grass, moss and debris and apply a lawn dressing before lightly raking in new grass seed and watering in if rainfall is, for once, not imminent. Get underway with your vegetable garden and allotment by digging in a good feed of manure or garden compost, after harvesting any remaining winter vegetables. Sow salad, herb and vegetable seed in trays in the greenhouse or under cloches in the growing site. When the soil has warmed up, usually mid-March/early April, plant out your chitted potatoes, onion and garlic sets, peas and beans. There is still a chance of frost during these months, so do keep an eye on the forecast. Protective fleece is always handy to have on stand-by. Phew! A lot to keep you busy but, most importantly, enjoy your garden!

aesthetic, graceful and like to be surrounded by beauty! I modelled myself for a few years and it gave me financial security at a young age. It is one of the few professions at that time in the 80's where women earned more than men. I know you are probably concerned for her but I see a lot of success . She could start off in her holidays maybe. Register with an agency that belongs to the AMA and maybe you or her mum could chaperone her to jobs.
Dear Eve I have enclosed a photo of my 16 year old granddaughter Hayley. Her birthday is the 16th Oct which makes her a Libran. She is desperate to become a model. Could you use your psychic abilities to see if this is possible and a good idea? Sandra, Old Town Hastings
Hi Gordon. Ooh this sounds exciting Gordon. I don't have a lot of experience with this subject I must admit, but it's amazing how many letters I have received about other dimensions etc. When I predicted the space shuttle explosion of Jan 2003, a few months before it happened and got a lot of media attention, I received over 100 emails from people who thought I was an expert on space travel and possible life on other planets! So I think there are a lot of people who are also fascinated. Of course a forward thinking Aquarius would always be pushing the boundaries. What I have heard is that there have been a lot of UFO sightings in Fairlight and I think I'm right in saying that there is a group that you can join there who have an interest. I'm sure you'll find out more once you move. Happy New Home.
Dear Sandra Thank you so much for the photo of Hayley which helps me a lot to "tune in". I think I'm right in saying that Hayley is bright, but has lost interest in school a long time ago and doesn't see herself as academic. I feel she is continuing her studies though and I do get her considering a catering career of some sort. I actually feel that Hayley could definitely make it as a model. I see a determination in her when it is something that she really wants. She has the height (most important) and the looks. Librans are very
Dear Eve I'm moving to Fairlight soon from Tenterden, Kent. I've heard that there is a lot of extra- terrestrial activity in that area. I'm fascinated with this subject. Do you know of any such activity there.. Gordon, Aquarius.

Downsize to a Retirement Community with a Difference Take a look at this refreshing approach to retirement living... A unique retirement community is offering a new approach to retirement living in a tranquil countryside setting near Heathfield in East Sussex. The Holy Cross Priory community includes 40 retirement apartments, with an onsite care home and other facilities. Right from the start, you will see how Holy Cross is different to anywhere else. Unlike so many other retirement villages and care homes, Holy Cross is totally independent and run by the people who work there, for the benefit of the residents and the community. That’s never going to change. This different approach also extends to the way each apartment is being
marketed – there are no corporate sales agents here. Instead, you can arrange a no-pressure visit to Holy Cross and choose your retirement home from 20 stunning 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in the Grade-II listed Priory building or 20 new build apartments. Holy Cross offers totally independent retirement living, with the option of a genuine, compassionate and personal care service, if you need it, in the comfort of your own home. The spacious, accessible accommodation has been finished to a very high specification, and some housekeeping support is included as
part of the purchase price. You can be yourself and enjoy high quality independent living in an apartment that you have chosen. It combines stylish and practical design considerations that enable you to make this your forever retirement home. It all makes downsizing sound like a rather good idea doesn’t it?

WIN A DAY OF INTERIOR DESIGN ADVICE IN YOUR OWN HOME WORTH £200! With Spring on the way, increasingly a lot of us look around our homes and identify rooms that we would love to freshen up. Or for those of us lucky enough to have moved house, the desire is how to turn it into a home. For some of my clients they know the ‘look’ they want but aren’t sure how to achieve it, what colours will work together etc. For others they simply don’t know where to start. But most people wouldn’t consider turning to an Interior Designer – surely that would cost a fortune? To help with this, I developed Designer For A Day. This is a simple way to make the most of your home’s potential. I come to clients’ homes and we talk through whatever interior design dilemmas they may have. We can concentrate on one room or do a swift walk through the whole house, creating solutions and coming up with ideas as we go. I am always conscious of finances in the current economic climate and will only provide ideas that can be achieved with the budget my clients can afford. I make the whole thing great fun and I end up leaving my clients with a design brief of ideas and colour suggestions, which they can refer to as they undertake the work at their own pace or pass to a tradesman. Clients gain the confidence and ideas to go ahead and create the home they dream of, in their own time and to their own budget. Nearly everyone has at least one room in the house that just feels ‘wrong’ with a layout that
doesn’t flow, a colour scheme you’ve gone off or a simple lack of storage. Maybe you've moved to a house of a different period and your furniture doesn't seem to work any more. Maybe your children have finally left home and you've a spare room to re-invent as a hobby space or home gym. Designer For A Day costs £200 for up to 6 hours; or there’s a really cost effective Designer For Half A Day option at just £125 for 3 hours. It is available throughout Sussex from: www.designerforaday.co.uk. Designer For A Day is also available as a voucher, which makes a fantastic housewarming or mother’s day present. Wendy Newman.

Your family history: who do you think you are? Have you ever wondered if you're distantly related to a celebrity, or even royalty? Plenty of people do, and tracing family history is becoming increasingly popular. There are a number of free resources available for people tracing family trees with links to East Sussex.
Read up If this is the first time that you have researched family history, it's a good idea to read up about it before you start. Visit your local library and borrow a book on how to get started - we recommend ‘Getting started in family history’ by David Annal.
Research at home Talk to your family – especially the oldest members. This will help you to trace family history back as far as you can and get details of where people were born, lived and died. Look at old family documents. Past correspondence, old letters and family bibles are great sources of information about your ancestors. Make a first draft of your family tree. Don't forget
Creative Writing Corner
We've had a great response to the short story we printed in the January edition of Golden Times, we've received several pieces of creative writing from our readers, it's a shame we've only got room for one in this issue! Don't despair if you've sent something in which hasn't been featured, we will try to print more in future issues! So, if you have written something around 400500 words long similar to the story below, and you'd like to see it in print, send it in! Please email submissions to jason@goldentimes.co.uk or post them to us at 78 Elphinstone Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 2BS. R
"It wasn’t me!" by Rosemary J Shelfer
The corner shop had quite a few customers that morning so no-one noticed the hand steal into the old lady’s open handbag and withdraw the purse. “Too easy,” thought the thief as he quickly slipped the purse into his pocket and moved towards the door. He enjoyed his ‘work’ although sometimes things did get a bit tricky, but it was still exciting after all this time. He never gave a thought to his victims and just regarded them as targets. One of his friends spoke to him about it once and his reply was, “Well, I never HURT them! They should be grateful!” and laughed. The old lady was nearly at the till and looked down into her handbag, only to discover that the purse was gone. “Someone’s stolen my purse!” she cried in shock. Everyone looked at each other, all under suspicion in those first few seconds.

A regular customer, Ken, who was near to the door called out, “I’ll see if anyone is around outside!” He stepped out to see if anything could be done. Only a few yards away was the culprit, a welldressed man in his thirties, lighting up a cigarette in a casual manner. Ken told him what had happened and the smoker laughed lightly, as he slipped the lighter back into his suit pocket. “Well, it wasn’t ME!” he said, and looked the other man straight in the eye in that honest way criminals have sometimes. “No, of course not. I just wondered if you had seen anyone run out of the shop?” “Would they run?” asked the pickpocket, and looked into the distance, as though trying to imagine the scene. A few other people were walking by, going about their business. There was no point in going up to each one and saying, “Sorry to trouble you, but you haven’t just stolen a purse, by any chance?” So he gave that up and returned to the shop. Everyone looked round as the shop bell tinkled to herald his entrance. “No luck, I’m afraid,” said Ken, as he shut the door. “Will you report it to the police, love?” he asked the elderly lady. To his surprise, she burst out laughing, a younger laugh which belied her years. “Hardly worth it,” she answered. “That’s me SPARE purse! Always keep all my pennies in that one and a realistic furry toy spider in case anyone nicks it.” They heard the scream from a hundred yards away. R

Dress for your shape, not your age Have you started shopping for your summer wardrobe? Looking forward to wearing brilliant colours, sleeveless tops and sun dresses? No? I wonder how often you deny yourself that perfect outfit because "I'm just too old to wear that". The long-standing “rules” are still stuck in the minds of many, who feel that they can’t wear certain things because it’s not considered appropriate after a particular age. Many women still fall back on the same old mantras. If you are over 50 you simply should not wear short skirts, show your arms or legs, wear bright colours or strike a pose in high heels - in fact, never have fun with clothes. And men often just give up shopping for clothes altogether! However, it seems things are changing. Saga carried out a survey of 4,540 women and found that women considered their lifestyle, their size and the occasion more important than their age when choosing new clothes. It seems that just a third of women between 50 and 74 consider their age when they shop for clothes. In fact, Research shows that both women and men over 50 are becoming more confident about how to dress stylishly. Much of this is to do with the role models we see. Women like Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda, men like Bill Nighy and Bill Clinton who prove that we can look fantastic in later life. They never try to dress too young, but always look fabulous.

Older people are getting better at picking out fashion that suits them. Rather than opting for dowdy cardigans and beige slacks, women are choosing trendy maxi dresses, sleeveless shirts, cropped trousers and jeans. Men are rediscovering how to wear a suit in a casual way and realising that a football shirt is never stylish (unless you're David Beckham, of course). I notice my clients are becoming more adventurous and willing to try something different. They are shunning shops which cater for "the more mature" and demanding fashion that makes them feel youthful without making them look like they're trying too hard. My "Ageless Style" workshops always include a playful experimentation with clothes and focus more on what you CAN wear rather than what you can't. We all know the saying "Act your age, not your shoe size". Well, my advice is to remember to "Dress your shape, not your age" and if in doubt, go for it. Michèle Want to find out more? Cioppino Italian Seafood Stew A sumptuous, spicy, savoury crowd-pleasing dish. Ingredients: 3 tbsp olive oil 2-3 Flat anchovy fillets 1 tsp dried red pepper flakes 1 Large fennel bulb, thinly sliced 1 Med. onion, chopped 3 Large shallots, chopped 2 Celery stalks, chopped 2 tsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 4 Large garlic cloves, chopped 1/3 cup tomato paste 2 Tins chopped tomatoes 350ml white wine 2 pints fish stock 4 Sprigs fresh thyme 1 Bay leaf 1lb Clams, scrubbed 1lb Mussels scrubbed 1lb Oysters, shucked 1lb Uncooked peeled prawns ½lb Scallops ¼lb Squid ¼lb Octopus ¼lb Cuttlefish 1½lbs firm-fleshed fish fillets, diced Handful chopped parsley Serves 12
Cooking Instructions Heat the oil in a very large pot over medium heat. Add anchovies - let melt into oil. Add the fennel, onion, shallots, celery, salt and black pepper and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir tomato paste into veggies and let cook out for about 3-5 minutes (the tomato paste will start to caramelise, turning from red to a brownish colour). Add the garlic and 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes, and cook 2 minutes. Add tomatoes with their juices, wine, fish stock, thyme and bay leaf. Cover and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer on medium-low until the flavours blend - at least a couple of hours. Add the clams, mussels and oysters to the cooking liquid. Cover and cook until the clams and mussels begin to open, about 5 minutes. Add the prawns, scallops, squid, octopus, cuttlefish and fish. Simmer gently until the fish and prawns are just cooked through, and the clams are completely open, stirring gently, about 5 minutes longer (discard any clams and mussels that do not open). Remove bay leaf. Season the soup, to taste, with more salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes. Ladle the soup into bowls, sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with crusty bread.
