Once again for 2014 we're media sponsors to the Sussex Over 50s show which is held at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne on the 10th and 11th of May. It's always fantastic for us to meet some of the readers at these events and we're looking forward to meeting even more of you this time round so make sure you come along to the show and say "hello".

It was lovely to hear from some of the lucky winners of the "Buddy" competition in the last issue. They all had a fantastic night out at the White Rock Theatre. The Golden Times team managed to catch the show ourselves and it really was a superb nights entertainment.

Sussex women are being urged to join forces and show cancer who’s boss by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2014 which is now open for entries. Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life events will take place across Sussex In June and July 2014.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k and 10k events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research.

Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the South East.

Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. All women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.

Helen Curtis, Cancer Research UK’s Events Manager, said: “We’re calling on Sussex’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life.

Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all.

Frank’s Travels

Having decided to terminate my stay in New Zealand I set off from my last overnight stop outside Hamilton, and headed north for Auckland airport. I felt a twinge of regret to be leaving this lovely friendly country but my itchy feet had kicked in so it really was time to move on.

evening. Naturally we in the army found a way round this but I did feel sorry for the civilians. Apparently it was all down to church influence in the State parliament, but what I did notice was that there were a lot of early evening drunks around the town!!

At the airport I checked at the Air New Zealand information desk for details of the next flight to London, and found there was a seat available on a flight via Singapore the following day. As I had an "Open" ticket I arranged a 3 day stopover in Singapore as I hadn't been there since I finished a 3 year tour of duty during the Malayan Emergency in the 50's. Feeling quite excited at the prospect of spending a few days in,"Singers" I took myself off to arrange yet another overnight at a local motel, and get rid of my hire car... Roll on tomorrow!!

As our 'plane progressed steadily in the direction of Singapore I noticed on my little TV screen that our flight path would be taking us over parts of Borneo. Once again my memory bank kicked in and took me back to the time when, as a section corporal I found myself 300 miles up the Baram river in Sarawak where we spent a rather hectic 4 months on what was called OPMACC which apparently meant,"Operation Military Aid to the Civil Community". I can tell you now it was anything but civil!!

I arrived at the airport the following morning well hyped up, and ready to roll. I checked departures and was well pleased to find that my flight was on time. By the time we took off my brain had gone into overdrive as I tried to recall my memories of the area that I was flying over. Heading north I knew that somewhere, 36,000 feet below lay Australia, where I had the luxury of spending 4 months with the Australian army just outside a place called Casula. Believe it or not the nearest decent sized town was called Liverpool, but unlike Liverpool(UK) the pubs in New South Wales at that time shut at 18:00 hours... Yep, that's right... 6 o'clock in the

The up-side of this little jaunt was that at the end of it we returned to a base in Singapore where, after our Sgt Major welcomed us back then told us to get a haircut, we got a 2 week leave pass and 4 months back pay, all in hard cash. WooHoo shares in Tiger brewery were about to go through the roof.

In my next column I will enlighten you about my trip down memory lane in Singers. I have really fond memories of the place because that was where I met the young lady who became my wife, so until the next time stay healthy, watch how you go and enjoy living. Frank

When is it time to throw the towel in and accept that the marriage/relationship is over?

If you experience your marriage as an empty shell with no redeeming features then I guess you could be heading down the divorce path. Marriages don’t usually just suddenly collapse; there is generally a protracted erosion over some years. Deciding to leave a relationship is extremely hard even if you believe it is damaged beyond repair. Consider the following list of possible indicators that suggest your marriage has hit the rocks and is just not meeting your needs of a loving, nurturing and fulfilling relationship.

•If you have not only fallen out of love with each other but have reached the stage where you actively dislike one another then remaining together can be destructive for both of you.

•Do you find yourself trying to fill the void within your relationship by immersing yourself into activities outside of the relationship?

•Have you grown so far apart that you no longer share interests or beliefs?

•Have you lost desire to be intimate and find that you are no longer sexually attracted to one another?

•Do you constantly argue with no sign of any resolution or compromise?

•Do you or your partner frequently rake up negative past events?

•Have you lost all respect for your partner?

•Do you live in fear of criticism and/or suffer abuse?

This is by no means a comprehensive list and I could go on but I am sure you get the picture. No doubt you will be able to identify with some of these elements if you are in the thick of a broken down union.

Making the transition from being married to being single again can bring up many difficult emotions and once you have agreed to part and go for a divorce you may want to consider divorce counselling either individually or as a couple. You may question what good this can possibly do? Thinking maybe that it’s too late but many people find that talking through what had been good in the beginning and perhaps how the relationship changed over the years can help them to move on in a much healthier way.

Retirement Nowadays a better word for Retirement might be Indulgent Leisure or Experimental Times. Retirement still has the connotation of enforced leisure, winding down and no longer contributing to a useful life but that simply isn’t true. Retirees are more active mentally and physically than they have ever been.

It’s an opportunity for doing all those things that you’ve always dreamed of and talked about ‘when I’m retired I will do ….’ It is a time of opening up horizons, entering uncharted territories, stretching yourself into an exciting new phase of life.

And then, just as everything is going swimmingly, some people can hit a wobble. By gaining a new life, they have lost their former, familiar one. They no longer have a title (except for exGeography Teacher, ex-Council Worker, ex-Nurse), a team around them or a company they work for, consequently, there can be a loss of confidence and, effectively, a kind of bereavement for the loss of status, and identity.

So what do I do now? What do I really want to do?

We’ve all been through different phases during our lives when we feel we are at a crossroads or feeling stuck. It is just we don’t

expect it when we are entering a new exciting period. But that is just when it can happen. Just as going through adolescence, to college, a career brings in new experiences so does retirement.

Life changes and we change with it. The skills we had as teenagers are not the same as the ones we have now. And as for identity, you are the same person, you have huge experience, life skills and knowledge but you haven’t been retired before. Things are different and whenever you step out of one familiar existence into a new life you are learning new things, extending yourself and that can be quite scary.

But also exhilarating.

The fact that you are feeling a little uncomfortable means that you are experimenting and growing. Not satisfied with retiring to the fireplace, you are showing curiosity, innovation and adventure – and slowly you will see yourself in a slightly different light. Your confidence is still there, it might have gone into hiding, but it will be back.

Think how you will feel when you have achieved something new.

Surprise your friends and family and remember that time when you were confident, you could do anything. And you still can.

Research conducted with older people about what they regret most in life is not what they have done, it is what they didn’t do.

And the fact that they didn’t take enough risks.

Dare to dare. Dare to dream. And smile at your achievements.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

I'm writing this article at midnight before I leave for a lovely long holiday in a few hours time. My husband is sleeping soundly but I am still at my desk, with my case open on the floor and clothes and shoes scattered around.

This holiday has been booked for months, but still, here I am, with a to-do list which will take me well into the small hours. It never seems to matter how long I have to prepare for something, I always end up rushing at the last minute. It's just in my nature.

I run a social group for women which I love and I will spend hours - sometimes days, planning and organising an event and I'll tell myself to allow plenty of time to prepare so I can relax and enjoy it. The day will come and I'll find I haven't printed off the member lists, the printer isn't working, I can't find my car keys, I've got urgent phone calls to make..... the list goes on. I end up rushing out the door at the last minute and arriving, hopefully, just a few minutes before the first guest.

The one saving grace is that I rarely have to spend any time wondering what to wear. My wardrobe is now so "weeded" I only have clothes that I love to wear and I know exactly what I have and how to wear it. I can grab a pair of trousers, a top, and a jacket, add a scarf, earrings and necklace and be dressed in 5 minutes. I know exactly which shoes work with which outfits so that's no problem either. You can try this too. Making up new combinations that suit your mood or the season are a great way to extend your wardrobe and you can always find new ways to mix and match your separates.

A new scarf will make your jackets look very different and new shoes can change your entire perception. Practice will make you, if not perfect, at least a lot more prepared for those last minute wardrobe decisions. You could even take some photos and stick them inside your wardrobe door to remind you.

1.

Introducing a lifetime Cap on Care Costs set at £72,000.

The headline was welcomed but as always the devil is in the detail. This ‘cap’ does not include ‘hotel costs’ (i.e. bed and board) if living in a care home.

2.

Capping ‘Hotel Costs’ in Care Homes The Government have indicated that they will limit ‘hotel costs’ to £12,000 pa for everyone.

3.

Increase the upper level of the means test for those

entering residential care to £118,500.

As from April 2016 anyone with assets of between £14,250 and £118,500 whose need for care reaches an appropriate threshold will be entitled to some financial support on a sliding scale.

We see that these three measures may offer some future cost savings but in many cases a high proportion of care costs will remain with those requiring care.

The one thing that remains clear is that the subject of later life care and the funding of this care remains a complex area requiring professional advice and guidance.

Tricia’s Column

hat a difference a couple of months can make! When I sat down to write my last column, the trees and hedgerows were all looking fairly bare and drab, now it's a riot of colour. As the daffodils and snowdrops fade, the bluebells and blossom take centre stage. Seems like every thicket of trees I pass has a blue carpet at the moment and there's the wonderful smell of wild garlic in the air.

Since my last column, I've been spending rather a lot of time at the theatre. As I write, it occurs to me that before I moved down to Sussex, I hardly ever took the time to take in a show but nowadays I seem to be there every other week. Theatres seem to be more of an intrinsic part of the local community in seaside towns than they are elsewhere. We were lucky enough to catch "Buddy" at the White Rock Theatre, and it really was a fantastic evening.

The musical talent of the cast would be impressive enough if they just stood there and performed, but the fact that they can keep singing and playing while leaping from one side of the stage to another makes it even more remarkable.

You could forgive the audience for being worn out just watching, but towards the end of the show there were plenty of people more than old enough to know better who were up and dancing in the aisles!

If you've not taken a trip to your local theatre lately, I would recommend you try it sometime soon. There's a wide range of entertainment on offer all over the county, everything from rock'n'roll to classical to comedy and drama. A good night out can make you feel years younger. Have a look on pages 34 and 35 for some inspiration and a competition to win tickets to see the very amusing "Jethro" show.

As well as "Buddy" I also got to watch two of my grandchildren take to the stage as their Youth Theatre group put on a West End Experience show. The whole place was packed with excited parents and grandparents cheering and clapping every move!

The 2014 Heathfield & District Agricultural Show Every year the Show evolves and this year we are excited to say that we are re-introducing our Poultry section. There will not only be a display of rare poultry breeds but also the much loved Sussex birds.

Taking the new Nissan Qashqai for a spin The revamped Nissan Qashqai seems to be getting a lot of attention in motoring circles, with "What Car" naming it their "Car of the year" for 2014. With such a buzz around the new model, I was very pleased to be invited by SLM to pop along to their showroom and take one for a test drive.

First impressions of the car are that it's sleek, stylish and modern. It stands a little taller and looks a little larger than a standard family hatchback, and looks robust without the imposing bulk of a 4x4.

The interior is not only modern and stylish, but also very comfortable, solid, and well put together. The word "refined" springs to mind, you feel as if you're sitting in something built and designed with care. Equipment levels are very high, every gadget you could wish for was on offer in the "Acenta Premium" model I drove.

The car came equipped with a 1.2 litre petrol engine which seemed very small for a car capable of accommodating 5 adults and plenty of luggage. Once I activated the ignition system (with a button, not a key, all very hi-tech) and got the car out onto the open road, I was quickly forced to change my mind about the engine. Quite how Nissan have managed to make a 1.2 litre engine feel so lively in such a spacious car I'm not sure, but it's very impressive. Nissan claim 50.4mpg (combined) for this model and I would have no reason to doubt their figures.

The steering was light and responsive, making the car seem nimble, you never get the impression you're driving a big car. Not until you open the boot or pick up two or three friends that is!

I have always been very pleased with the 'old' model Qashqai we have owned for a while, so I was genuinely surprised at how much better the new car is. If you're in the market for something stylish, comfortable, practical and economical, it's well worth giving SLM a call to book a test drive.

Old St Helen's Church Some of you will already be aware of the work that was undertaken last year by Sussex Heritage Trust to stabilise and re-instate the ruins of Old St Helen’s Church. The project was completed in 2013 whereupon it was handed back to Hastings Borough Council to be looked after by the Amenities and Leisure team and the Ranger Service.

The church is one of the oldest buildings in Hastings. It was built in the late 11th century and added to in each successive century until finally it was partly demolished and left as a ‘romantic ruin’ by the Victorians.

The remains, which include the tower, the north wall of the nave and the north and east wall of the chancel, together with the graveyard and some remnants of the parkland that was previously part of Ore Place, comprise a gloriously beautiful and peaceful spot for anyone to visit. It has open access all year round and full Open Days twice a year when experts are available to provide guided tours. the Friends of Old St Helen's also holding mini Open Days on the second Saturday of each month (10:00 14:00 April to October) when the tower will be open.

Wildlife was an important consideration of the project and considerable effort was made to ensure that the ruins and the substantial nearby badger sett could happily co-exist. Bird boxes and bat boxes were also installed. The site is mown in some places to facilitate access but the overall aim is for a natural environment and accordingly the graveyard is being managed to encourage wild flowers.

There are four excellent interpretation boards covering the standing remains, the archaeology, the graveyard and the wildlife and there is a lot of information on the web-site www.oldsthelenschurch.org.uk A Friends group has been established to help look after and promote the site and to manage the Open Days. Council chairman chooses Abbeyfield South Downs as his charity of the year Abbeyfield South Downs has been chosen by Wealden District Council chairman Cllr Dr Brian Redman as his charity of the year.

Cllr Redman will be holding a civic reception in June to recognise the efforts of charities and volunteers in the district and has decided that funds raised through a raffle will go to the organisation which works to combat loneliness among older people.

A similar reception bringing together dignitaries from across East Sussex is held by Wealden every two years. One of the highlights is the raffle with prizes provided by organisations, including suppliers, associated with the council.

“Everybody chips in and buys raffle tickets and I am able to give the proceeds to my chosen charity,” said Cllr Redman.

“The amount raised is usually between £500 and £750.”

Cllr Redman has been associated with Abbeyfield South Downs for about ten years starting when his wife Dr Deveda Redman, a GP in Heathfield at the time, became medical director for the charity.

The organisation was expanding its presence at Holdenhurst in Mill Road, Heathfield, and one of the things Cllr Redman was involved in was setting up a day centre in the building.

“It is on the basis of my knowledge of Abbeyfield, both locally and further afield, that I decided this was the organisation I would like to help,” said Cllr Redman.

Mr Malcolm Paris deputy chairman of Abbeyfield South Downs said the charity appreciated the support of the council chairman.

“It is charitable donations along with a lot of hard work by our staff and an army of volunteers that make it possible for us to offer a sociable lifestyle for older people as residents at our houses in Hove, Eastbourne, Heathfield and St Leonardson-Sea.”

The problem is the car has never felt right to me. Every time I get into it I feel uncomfortable and in just a few months has also had quite a few problems, starting with a tyre blowing ( thankfully at the rear) while I was driving and only after having the car for 6 weeks. My son thinks its funny and calls the car Christine after that horror film, but I'm nervous. Can cars be haunted?

Dear Agnes Well it is more unusual but yes a car can have residue energy from a previous owner or experience just like a house does.

This reminds me of a car I actually owned once and I feel your intuition is accurate in that something doesn't feel right with it.

As I tune in it seems to me that the car is about 10 years old and also had a serious accident about 3 years back. I would say it doesn't drive the same on a practical level but also the trauma has somehow changed the energy. This is an interesting problem as I know people will struggle with the concept of an inanimate object having an energy but all you can go by is how you feel and you are never going to enjoy driving this car unless you feel safe and secure in it. I would "cleanse" it like I would a house that had negativity with it and use a sage smudge stick.

With the car I owned, I put a large piece of smoky quartz for protection, in the glove compartment and that seemed to do the

trick. If it never feels ok to you Agnes even after these methods, I wouldn't feel guilty about letting this car go.

Dear Eve I have just started going to the Spiritualist Church as it gives me comfort since I lost my husband 3 years ago. I received a message from what appeared to be my grandfather who I actually remember quite well. Some things sounded like him but he also sounded a bit angry as if he was telling me off. Joanne, Hastings Dear Joanne Your letter is really interesting. I think sometimes in the Spiritualist Church there can be confusion who a message might actually be for, even with the most experienced Mediums.

Also you cannot control who will come through, as I imagine you were hoping for a message from your husband. My Nan is my Spirit Guide and she often comes through saying I'm not eating properly etc. But if I received a message through another clairvoyant/medium from her, where she was overly critical or attacking me I would question the interpretation. Saying that, I don't think people pass over and immediately become little cherubs or wise old souls. I think their general personality remains the same but there is usually an overwhelming feeling of love from your Guides. When I tune in clairvoyantly I feel that your Grandad is concerned about a friendship around you and is worried you may get hurt. "The Shoe"

She felt his hand tighten about the small of her neck the other grabbed sharply her hair. ‘You make one move, one sound and I will crack your neck’. His whispered words flowed across her face floating through the beer sodden fumes. She didn’t move but her mind reached back to the pub speed dating ad.

The evening talking to different men, getting phone numbers, later on meeting some of the contacts. Some she hadn’t liked but she had thought she liked this one. His blonde hair, tailored suit, perhaps too much after shave but still very presentable and softly spoken, she felt she could go a little further with this one. ‘Now stand up, do nothing quickly, slowly get up and bring your back to me’. Perhaps she thought it was something about her that had brought this change. Perhaps the obligatory ‘come up for a cup of coffee’ was too eagerly seized upon perhaps she had liked him too much, laughed with him too much. She wasn’t sure; she had always had trouble understanding male body language, male signals.

Her father had been her only real experience. The convent hadn’t done much to teach her about the male psyche even less to be aware that some men didn’t want love they wanted control. Her dad had just wanted love. She had always done what he had asked of her. She had gone where he had taken her, acted on his fantasies.

‘Move your back into me and slowly bend down’. She braced herself, tucked her foot tightly into her stiletto and drove

the heel of the shoe fiercely into and through the man’s shoe. The spasm of pain rose through his whole being, his frame screamed. His automatic response was to relax his grip and as he did she took his hand from her throat and spinning him round drove it into the small of his back. The arm cracked and he collapsed to the ground. He had no idea which part of his body his useful arm should tend as, prostrate, he shook and cried.

She had seen some of the children cry that way when she was young in the Aikido class that her dad used to coach.

She had attended for him, she had won cups for him, she had been happy to see him happy, to see his failures, his dreams, his imaginings find redemption and fruition in her.

That had always pleased her and she was pleased now that his lectures about self-defence had actually, as he always argued, served a purpose.

She closed the door behind her, she hailed a cab, she looked at the list of dating contacts she still had not met; perhaps I could be happy with one of those. There was a chance of course, but no certainty.
