Wings Appeal Concert De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea

Sunday 14th July 7.30pm From the RAF Central Band Red White & Blues Big Band and Salon Orchestra

CENTRAL BAND OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE The Central Band was established after the RAF was formed in 1918; in 1922 it was the first military band to broadcast on BBC radio and to this day it is the most frequently featured military band in that medium. It is always in great demand undertaking more than 370 engagements a year. It represents the RAF at every major military event, and performs at all of the principal concert venues in Britain. Changing times have necessitated new recruitment and training policies but, despite reductions in numbers, professional standards remain exceptionally high. The aim is always to reflect the excellence for which the RAF has become renowned over its distinguished history.

RED WHITE AND BLUES BIG BAND The Royal Air Force “Red White & Blues” Big Band was established in 2011 and Sgt Chris Quinn was appointed as leader in May of that year. Like many other members of the band he has been deployed on active service in Afghanistan where he served with the Joint Helicopter Support Unit for six months between October 2008 and February 2009. The repertoire of the Red White & Blues is designed to continue the popular legacy of the 1940’s greats such as Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman. In addition there are arrangements of popular music of today and inspiring collaborative numbers performed with the Salon Orchestra and other ensembles. The band is a typical eighteen piece big band; a five strong saxophone section, full brass compliment of five trumpets and four trombones, a rhythm section of piano, acoustic and bass guitars and the drum kit.

THE SALON ORCHESTRA In 1937 the RAF formed its own Symphony Orchestra which reached its peak during the war years when the majority of the finest players from the London orchestras applied to serve in the RAF. The termination of National Service brought about the disbandment of the Symphony Orchestra and the Salon Orchestra of the Central Band of the RAF was formed in 1959. Today, stationed at RAF Northolt alongside the Central Band, this independent six-piece Orchestra’s principle role is to provide musical support for RAF, State and Service engagements. It is much sought after for receptions, luncheons and dinners where a lighter touch of tradition and pageantry is appropriate. Chief Technician Barry Stringer MBE has been the leader since 2005; he joined the RAF in August 1986 and became a member of the Orchestra in October of that year. During 2004 he served a four month detachment in Basra, Iraq where he worked with an Army Force Protection Unit that involved travelling all over south east Iraq escorting various sizes of convoys.

MOLLY MARIE WALSH Molly Marie was born into a musical family in Southern California. She graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2006 and then worked professionally in New York City for 5 years appearing in musicals, cabarets and concerts. Last year she played one of her “dream roles” as the Witch in a fundraising production of Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” in New York City’s lower East Side. She now lives in London with her husband who is a member of the Royal Air Force Central Band.
