Frank’s Travels - Aden
At the end of my last column I wrote that our next port of call on the troopship would be Aden. Well here I was leaning on the rail of the upper deck admiring the view , and thinking to myself "Blimey what a dump!!" The port of Aden, although for centuries a stopping off point for Arab traders visiting the east coast of Africa, had developed into a dirty smelly oiling station for ships heading from, and to India, and the Orient after the opening of the Suez canal. When I arrived there in 1955 it didn't seem to have changed a lot, and I remember thinking to myself that when God made the world he must have needed somewhere to tip the spoil and so he chose this neck of the woods!!! We were allowed a run ashore for a few hours so those of you who know the area will know that we headed for the few bars in Steamer Point where there was icecold beer to be had: What a change from the dreadful warm stuff we had been drinking on board......Bliss. On board ship I had got to know a number of lads in the RAF heading for the base at RAF Khormaksar, and I couldn't help but think what a hole to be stuck in to do your National Service. Little did I realise that in nine years I would be back here, and actually be based on Khormaksar!! After the troop deck Sgts had done a head count, and all were safely ensconced on board, the ship hoisted it's anchor, and off we sailed across the Indian Ocean in the direction of the port of Colombo which was the capital of Ceylon ( Now Sri Lanka )
The trip across the Indian Ocean was awesome, and I promised myself that one day I would sail across an ocean like this in the same style the officers traveled in on the upper decks. The sky at night was a complete mass of stars like I had never seen before, and the electrical storms that appeared on the horizon at night were fabulous displays of nature in the raw. Eventually we steamed into Colombo, and after Aden the area actually looked quite civilised with the locals greeting you with a smile as opposed to the surly looks we had got from the pro-Nasser Arabs at our previous port of call. It was here in Colombo that I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life, and which I remember to this day. I had only ever seen a pineapple either in a Hollywood movie or on a poster somewhere, and suddenly here I was surrounded by them, and the smell was wonderful. The price was 1 Rupee for three, so I bought myself three, and making myself comfortable on the pavement at the market I proceeded to use my issue Jack Knife to trim my prized possessions one by one and eat all three of them as I went along. The end result was that I tasted pineapple in everything that I ate for a week afterwards, and I have never eaten pineapple again to this day!! Well folks, next port of call Singapore so until the next time stay healthy, watch how you go, and enjoy living. Frank

"We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw Play is not just vitally important for children; we grownups need to have fun too. In fact, studies show that a life lived without play is at increased risk of stress related diseases, mental health issues and addiction. We don’t just lose the need for fun when we grow up; it is an essential course of relaxation and stimulation. If you feel your fun loving inner child has become somewhat submerged, endeavour to connect with it again; try being spontaneous in finding something fun, something new to experience. Are you someone that mostly considers play as a waste of time and perhaps regard that as responsible adults we must be more serious? If this is the case then you could probably do with reviewing how you look upon play. The National Institute for Play believes that play can dramatically transform our personal health, and our relationships. They describe play for adults as the gateway to vitality and that it generates optimism. British researchers followed 3199 people aged 60 years or older for eight years and found that those with a joie de vivre had better physical health. There is a saying that I am sure most of you will have heard many times before ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. Meaning of course that unless people get time off from working they will become bored and

How do you include more play time in your life? Firstly, maybe change your mind-set about the need to do something productive, give yourself permission to play every single day. Many of us live fairly hectic lives with numerous commitments which seem to take up so much time that factoring in some play time comes way down the list of priorities. The social interaction of playing with others can really help us to get the most out of life. Children learn best when they are playing and that also applies to adults too. Technology will save us! But do we want it?
In our monthly technology column, local computer trainer Neil Duncan answers the pressing questions. Q: I am an active 80 year old and everyone is telling me to “get online” - do I really need to? A: A new government report came out last month that showed 7 million people in the UK remain offline, or without the basic skills to enjoy the Internet. Many people argue that “the modern world” of Internet devices is leaving the older generation behind. Sometimes technology does pass us by. Our tutors have had many visits with older clients up to the age of 96. “It’s like Chinese”, one would say. “What’s the point – it’s too late for me”, said another. New technology is often thought of as the plaything of the young, with the older generation wary of innovations like smart phones, tablets, and social media. Do you remember the days when you used to go to the library to find information? You’d sit there for hours researching books. But now we can get answers at the touch of our fingertips. As with everything, some simple guidance can open up the wonders of technology for even the most basic of beginners. Many people who are isolated can be helped enormously through the power of the Internet. The stories of success are endless. Instead of being scared of technology, we can embrace it. You can receive email messages instantly instead of waiting for the post. You can ‘Skype’ families across the world to hear their voice and see them – for free! You can research hobbies at the touch of a button. Just being online allows you to save hundreds of pounds a year in finding better deals. If anything, it should make your life easier. So no, you don’t NEED to get online, but why not try it out? Take that step now and move into a whole new world – you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! Do you have a Technological Dilemma ? A Burning Computer Question ? Write to the Computer Trainer at info@silvertraining.co.uk Neil Duncan is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Hastings and Eastbourne area. He can come to your home for 1:1 lessons on any device and for any topic; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges are £35 per hour including training materials. Please call 01424 400 190 to enquire.

Are you worried about having to sell your home to pay for care costs? Over 50,000 homes were sold in the last year for that reason but it can be easily avoided.
Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?
If you have to go into care you may be "means tested" by your Local Authority to assess your ability to pay for that care. Under current rules, if you have assets that total more than £23,250 (in England), which could include the value of your home, you will be required to fund your care in full – a care home will cost £500-£800 a week or more. Not every family is affected by this issue, and in certain circumstances your home and savings might not be vulnerable. Request our free information pack today to find out more and discover what steps you can take to protect your hard earned wealth for your family. Life Writing and Literature: reading, discussion and writing in a friendly group How long is it since you read Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations – if ever? Do you remember any poetry you learnt at school? Would you enjoy exchanging views on childhood, family life, growing up, falling in love, leaving home? Then, writing down your own memories and reminiscences? And even reading aloud from your own script to an interested audience. These are some of the activities enjoyed by the participants of the six workshops held here in Hastings, this summer.
rapturous crowds. He performed here in 1861 and you can see the blue plaque commemorating his visit above Yates’s in Robertson Street. This is a busy area, but hardly anyone looks up to see this historic landmark. It is worth a look. More workshops are due to run in September, contact Hastings Works to express an interest in attending – frontdesk@hastingsworks.com.
The growth in confidence and development of traditional skills which are the basis of advanced literacy are remarkable. Fascinating stories emerge; memories, sad, painful, funny, precious are shared. As one member of the group said: ‘I recovered my old love of reading, of losing myself in a powerful story and of being gripped by memorable characters’. Another member confessed that she had not read aloud – and enjoyed it – for as long as she could remember. In today’s society intellectual and creative stimulus, especially for older people are sadly lacking. Yet we know that ‘use it or lose it’ applies to mental as well as physical health. The ability to concentrate, to sustain attention for any length of time without the distraction of screens and phones is crucial in sustaining our sense of self at any age but particularly as age takes its effect. As one member said, ‘you have to get yourself here, read and THINK’ Charles Dickens, who called himself ‘The Inimitable’, was phenomenally popular and his dramatic readings drew

Local businesswoman wins 1066 Award
Hastings business woman Lynn Carter has had a very exciting few months. Not only was her designer florist "Fleur de Lynn" awarded "highly commended" in the retailer of the year award at the 1066 business awards, but she was also asked to provide a floral display for Westminster Abbey to celebrate Easter (Pictured below left)
Holiday Inn, Worth 16th November – 11am – 3pm Ashdown Park Hotel, Forest Row. 23rd November – 11am – 3.30pm
Lynn is also a member of NAFAS (National Association Flower Arrangers Society) and has been training to become a demonstrator. This involved producing two large flower designs, whilst explaining to a large audience the techniques, being used and keeping them entertained, all with a 20 minute time limit. The adjudicator was impressed and Lynn passed the test so congratulations to her. Lynn was also asked to arrange flowers for the opening of the new wing at the Laurels Nursing home, which was opened by Gloria Hunniford (Picture above right) Lynn tells us it was a pleasure to meet Gloria who she assures us is a lovely lady! To find out more about the services Lynn offers, please see her advertisment at the top of this page.

This summer I have happened upon some lovely weddings. My daughter is of an age where many of her friends are tying the knot and she has been a bridesmaid at many. We have also had a family wedding which was delightful. I can honestly say that everyone looked lovely. But that's not true of all weddings. Looking at photographs it would appear that some of the guests have just left a nightclub whilst others look like they have been to the Queen's garden party - in 1973! I spend much of the summer in Italy (I know, how lucky am I?), and, whilst I have yet to be invited to my first Italian wedding, I'm able to join in the fun by following the blaring horns any Saturday afternoon to join with the entire village out to watch the spectacle. Everything stops for weddings and funerals and they are both ultra-stylish. In Italy, women of all ages wear elegant, fitted dresses, often with a wrap for the evening or a little jacket. They will rely on great fabric rather than pattern, often embellished for a bit of sparkle. Hats are rare and they certainly wouldn't be seen dead in a fascinator. It's true that hemlines have definitely been raised, especially for younger women, but bare shoulders and cleavage are still not acceptable - you are in church after all! Dressing for a wedding is all a bit of a minefield and it's something we Brits are still intimidated by. There are rules of etiquette as well as fashion to take into account and it's easy to get it wrong. Here are a few of my tips for successful wedding dressing. Always remember that wedding photographs live forever (or at least until the divorce!) so avoid anything ultrafashionable. Think classic lines with contemporary touches. Shoes are a dead giveaway and, in years to come you will be glad you chose a classic court or sandal. In summer, pastel colours are softly elegant and look lovely in photos, particularly peach, lemon, and turquoise. Or try pale orange for a more striking look. In
TO FASCINATE OR NOT ?
winter go for grey, taupe, lilac or burnt orange. Look for textured fabrics and sequins rather than bold patterns. Avoid shiny materials - a satin dress can look rather garish in photographs and might well make you look like a lost bridesmaid! A little jacket to cover your shoulders and arms will be more "dressy" than a bigger blazer style. Or, betterstill, find a beautiful wrap which can drape across your shoulders or wear "backwards" around your neck with the ends flowing down your back - particularly useful as the weather gets cooler. In winter you can take it a step further with a gorgeous faux fur stole. I may be alone in this, but I absolutely loathe fascinators. I have yet to see a woman who looks better with a pile of gauze stuck on the side of her head. It's the one time you can wear a hat, so why not enjoy it! If you wear a plain dress, choose a hat which suits your face and build. The brim should never be wider than your shoulders and small women need small hats. Go to a specialist milliner and get advice - I particularly love Herald & Heart in Rye. They will make you a wonderful hat for a wedding and then adapt it for other occasions for you. The main thing is to be comfortable and know you look good, then forget all about yourself and concentrate on enjoying the day. P.S. Completely coincidentally, as I was in the middle of writing this piece my daughter called me to say she was engaged. I am, of course, absolutely delighted but now I have to find something to wear. Tricia’s Column utumn has rolled around once more, probably a month earlier than it should have if truth be told. Someone should have told August it was supposed to be a summer month! Still, the new school year has now begun and a lot of grandparents can breathe a sigh of relief and have a break! I'm sure if anyone visits Gatwick Airport in early September they will find the departure lounge full of grandparents heading for the Canaries for a well deserved break! If you need some inspiration for a getaway, have a look on pages 4,5 and 31. My advice is to enjoy the back to school hiatus while you can, before you know it, Halloween half term will be here and you'll be carving pumpkins and making spooky costumes with the little darlings. As ever, our sister publication, the Family Buzz is on hand to provide advice and inspiration to those of us looking for family friendly activities. The Autumn edition is pictured here and will be available around Sussex alongside Golden Times so remember to keep an eye out for it. Autumn is also the time of year where it's easy to start becoming less active. The sun will be setting earlier, the wind starts to get a slight chill to it, very Your

Get your spokes spinning for Chestnut Tree House
Men get your pants on – Y Front Run is back! After a fantastic first event last September, the Y Front Run is back in Hastings Alexandra Park on Sunday 28th September – to help raise awareness of male cancer. This year the organisers, Jo & Hollie are also supporting Balls to Cancer and St Michael’s Hospice alongside CRUK. Last year over 100 guys ran around the park in their pants and raised over £4,000 for charity. This year we want to treble the number of men taking part and the amount raised for the three chosen charities. Registration is easy – simply email the team at: y-front-runhastings@hotmail.co.uk and they will send you the relevant form or alternatively visit: www. yfrontrun.co.uk and you can download the form to complete. The Y Front Run 2014 Tour has had an amazing year, starting off in Crawley, then onto Tunbridge Wells, into Ashford, followed by Eastbourne, ending in Hastings. Help by making this an annual event in these towns and kick male cancer in the balls!

tempting to spend more time in front of the TV with a cup of hot chocolate and not getting out as much. For those of you who'd like to stay fit during the winter, you will find some options on pages 16 and 17 from local fitness companies with some great ! EE offers to help you stay FR active. If that's not your cup of tea, I read some very interesting facts recently about owning a dog. Apparently, a recent study has shown that over 65's who own dogs are significantly more active than those who don't. Not only were dog owners shown to be more active, but their levels of activity were the equivalent of people ten years younger! On top of that, anxiety and depression were far less common among dog owners. Very interesting that something as simple as caring for a pet could come with such positive health benefits, I've always wanted a spaniel myself, now I can tell my husband we need one to make us healthier! Whatever you get up to this Autumn I hope you all have a fantastic time and I shall be back with another column in two months time!
On Sunday 12th October, cyclists will take to the roads of East Sussex for Chestnut Tree House's first cycling event, the Chestnut Sussex 100. Starting at Bentley Wildfowl in Halland, cyclists can choose between a 60km or 100km distance, raising vital funds along the way for children and families supported by Chestnut Tree House. The choice of two routes makes this the perfect event for seasoned cyclists and first-timers alike, with the 100km route including one of the UK's top 100 climbs, 'Kidd's Hill'. The charity is currently caring for 300 children with life-shortening conditions across Sussex. It costs £3 million each year to provide all care services, both at the house and in the community and the hospice receives less than 8% from central government, so it relies heavily on the generosity, help and support of the local community. So, whether you are an experienced cyclist or relatively new to the pedals and looking to challenge yourself, why not get your spokes spinning and help raise vital funds for Chestnut Tree House. Mane Chance Sanctuary Actress Jenny Seagrove tells Golden Times about her charitable work caring for animals in need. I have always considered myself blessed. I have a wonderful family, a good career, health, friends and so on and it is because of this that I have always felt the need to give back. To help those that can't help themselves. To share a bit of what I have. So in August 2011, when the phone rang and a girl I had been supporting for years said, in tears, "they haven't eaten for 4 days, what do I do?" (she had rescued a large collection of animals, got into trouble and gone broke) I knew that I had to do something and that it would change my life. I took a deep breath and said -" right we'll do this properly, we'll start a Charity!” And so Mane Chance Sanctuary was born. It has taken sleepless nights and almost every waking hour of my life since then - I squeeze my acting in somewhere! but now at nearly three years old, it is something I am passionate about and proud of. And I have found that as I get older, I get more determined to make a difference, and get more and more angry at the cruelty and injustices that infect our lives on a daily basis. I also, thankfully find that I have found patience and some wisdom..... Mane Chance has grown into a unique sanctuary - we don't just rescue horses, and the odd dog, at Mane Chance, we work with them using something called the Trust Technique, pioneered by James French - a wonderful
22
animal communicator who oversees the welfare, both physical and emotional, of our animals. Using patience, trust and the present moment, we are able to rehabilitate even the most damaged horses with breathtaking results. We also use the empathy that horses have with people and welcome sick, special needs and vulnerable children to our sanctuary, guiding them to form gentle relationships with some of our horses. It is a healing circle, a circle of care. It is a deep and growing passion of mine to attempt to change the way horses are viewed in society. There is, at this current time, a crisis, with at least 7000 horses having been abandoned because of the current economic climate and also because of the horse meat scandal. Sanctuaries are full and many more thousands of horses are just casually put down after their so called useful years are done. But if there were more Mane Chances - places where the circle of care is in place - then perhaps society would see a value in horses as healers and not just as creatures of service. An animal can have a profound effect on a damaged individual, in a relationship of trust and equality. I have seen it for myself. If you'd like to find out more about Mane Chance, please visit www.manechancesanctuary.org Readers interested in volunteering can email admin@manechancesanctuary.org or telephone 07512 363400.

Gardening tips for early - mid Autumn by Phoenix Gardening. Early Autumn approaches but it’s still pleasant out in the garden, if you manage to avoid the occasional downpour. A lot of gardening is about planning ahead, Autumn is a good time to get things in order. In the greenhouse we can take down shading or clean the glass if you paint yours on. We can still plant out some winter vegetables like winter radishes, lambs lettuce and purslane, although frost hardy you can give them some protection with a cloche to get a better harvest. You can use cloches to warm up the soil for your early plantings too. Cover outdoor tomatoes with a covering of fleece if necessary. If If they are sufficiently mature, green tomatoes will ripen on the windowsill indoors. We can plant up beds and borders ready for the spring, tulips under-planted with forget-me-not or wallflowers will provide a good show. Clear summer beds if you’re not intending to replant for spring, it makes for neatness. As we move later in the season we need to protect sensitive plants, lift Dahlias and give the lawn some attention, it’s a good time to aerate the ground and look at any problem areas.

"Hotel Ordeal" by Miss R Sherrier
We had left mum behind in migraine misery in our 97th floor hotel room. The fact that one entire wall was made of glass hardly helped the patient's predicament. To shake off the stygian gloom, Dad suggested we do a hotel recce. The hotel comprised four towers flanking a main atrium - a Metropolis style labyrinth of towers and walkways: masculine, industrial and menacing. It's most striking feature was the glass bubble lifts, appendaged to the towers. We marvelled at the logic: Level 2 was the 50th floor. The initial thrill of being whisked up and down was beginning to wear off; I was getting overexcited and tired. Again, we shot up twenty floors, despite my protests that I'd rather just go and get an ice cream. As the doors opened, in my hysteria - the sacred thrill in which children revel - I leapt out. But, before dad could join me, the lift doors shut and, to my sheer horror, I found myself stranded. As it was being renovated, the floor was desolate and eerie. The lift doors opened and I darted forwards, but looking up I saw a stranger. Gripped by instant terror, I recoiled, my mind machinating how to flee a potential homicidal maniac. Survival instincts alert, I shot a cursory glance at the sturdy, wrought-iron fire escape; it would entail scaling the tower's exterior. My escapee train of thought was cut short, "hey, kiddo -" He reached into his back pocket, probably for a revolver. Mercifully, it transpired to be a walkie-talkie. As he flicked it's antenna I noticed a badge on his inside pocket, just like a movie. I dared to feel a glimmer of hope. "Hey, Dan, ...Yeah, it's Harry. Seems we've got a 3-0 up on the
63rd East. OK" Wearily, he asked me, "So, you lost or something?" Through a muddle of stifled sobs of exasperation, falteringly, I managed to explain my predicament. Gently coaching me by the elbow he led me down the half-painted grey corridor. There was a light, literally, at the end of the proverbial tunnel: an inhabited office, tucked away in this god-forsaken wing. He introduced me to Bernie, Chief of Security, an overweight, avuncular type. His stomach bulged through his over-tight shirt; a crumpled jacket lay slung over the back of the chair. The desk was littered with the quintessential cop feeding paraphernalia: a trail of half-drunk coffees in varying stages of coagulation, accompanied by half-eaten, sweaty doughnuts stuck to paper napkins. I explained how mum was asleep and that the "Do Not Disturb" sign was to be observed. Bernie suggested we went on a quest for dad. We set off on our mission to cruise the atrium, embarking on a wild goose chase whenever I saw a familiar figure. Invariably, on closer inspection, it would turn out to be someone else. Finally we made our way to Reception. Suddenly, I felt a familiar hug, and a cone of chocolate-chip materialised in front of me. "So, shall we take the lift back up to see mum?"

PAYING FOR YOUR LATER LIFE CARE: FUNDING OPTIONS It is possible that a great number of people moving into care homes are doing so because they don’t realise that staying at home is a realistic alternative. Care provided at home could be as simple as someone coming in to cook and clean, it could involve helping the person to get in and out of bed and/or help with some basic daily tasks such as washing and dressing. This may be provided on an ad-hoc hourly basis or to a more regular and/or formal schedule. Funding Care at Home If a person’s capital and savings and/or income push them outside the means test thresholds (currently £23,250 in England) they will generally be responsible for the funding of their own care fees until such time as their money falls below the appropriate threshold. However, with careful planning it may be possible to structure their finances in such a way that care fees can be paid indefinitely, without worry. Taking professional, timely advice could ensure that the chosen care environment is financially sustainable indefinitely. At Ethos we are here to help you explore all the possibilities open to you. If you feel any of this applies to you, please feel free to give Natalie Ringwood a call on 01293 449860 to arrange a free no obligation meeting.
