We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work. We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself.

Choosing the right childcare provider for your child can be a daunting task for parents, so to help out parents taking this step for the first time, We are a small, friendly preschool here are some tips and hints: offering full time and sessional It's always a good idea to visit several childcare providers, at care for children 2-5 years of age. each one, look for: • Trained and experienced staff, they should be ready to learn and respond to the individual needs of your child. • Children who seem happy and purposeful, busy and engaged but comfortable in their surroundings. • Safe and clean premises that offer a warm welcome. • Planned and organised activities While visiting a childcare provider you should ask questions to make sure you're making an informed choice. Questions to consider are: • What qualifications do the staff have? • What is the ratio of staff to children and how many children attend each day? • Are food and nappies provided for the children? Naming Ceremonies The arrival of a child is a truly life changing event; worthy of celebration. Naming ceremonies are a meaningful way of celebrating the birth of a new baby with family and friends and to welcome them into the world and your lives. The naming becomes a special celebration to honour the child’s chosen name, choose guiding adults and offer gifts and blessings on the infant or young person. A traditional Christening, with ritual and religious words does not fit with everyone's outlook on life or hopes for the future. This ceremony offers an alternative choice for parents who would not choose to have a religious church christening, but recognise the importance of naming their child and celebrating their arrival into the family.

Currently situated in Hastings and St Leonards, Artemis Nursery is thrilled to announce the opening of it’s third nursery in Hollington. Artemis Hollington will be operating from 1st September and will run 51 weeks per year from 7.30am till 6pm, Monday to Friday. They will cater for children as young as 3 months to 5 years. Early Years education entitlement will be offered to all 3 & 4 year olds and childcare can be provided for those eligible for 2 year old funding. All meals will be prepared on the premises by a fully qualified chef. As such they are able to offer a diet which is capable of meeting all individual dietary needs. Year on year since its launch in 2007, Artemis Nursery has consistently accomplished outstanding progress. It’s reputation for outstanding childcare, as rated by Ofsted, is widely due to being owner managed, but at the heart of its success, is the belief that children deserve the best start in life, and are treated with care, consideration and respect as individuals. Artemis staff understand that children are motivated differently and use resources inventively to capture children’s imaginations and promote a love of learning. Staff have a very strong relationship with parents and offer home visits to help aid transitioning children from home to nursery. They will be holding open days at Artemis Hollington on 18th &19th July from 10am till 2pm where you can register your interest and meet some of their friendly team.

Party Games
Stuck for ideas for games to play at your kids party? Why not try some of these: Balloon burst Fill balloons with small sweets or toys before inflating them. The children have a set amount of time to try and burst as many balloons as they can without using their hands & feet (or teeth!) to get to the sweets Fancy Dress Relay You'll need two piles of dressing up clothes and two teams. Each team must take it in turns to put on all the dressing up clothes, run to a designated point and back, then take off the outfit. Whichever team finishes first wins a prize. Chimp Racing Players stand side by side, at a signal, they spread their legs apart and grab their ankles. In this position with their hands on their ankles they must walk to the goal line (about 10ft or so). If you let go of your ankles you must run back to the start and begin again. Works well as a relay race with a large group. Jelly Race Make 1 bowl of jelly per contestant with a small plastic toy in the middle of the jelly. The kids must eat their way through the jelly with their hands held behind their back. The first to get to the plastic animal is the winner.

Famous Gorilla Celebrates Birthday This year, a very special gorilla celebrated his 24th birthday with a delicious cake baked by the SugarRush Baking Company. Ambam, who weighs in at 220kg, shot to fame in 2011 when video footage of him walking on his hind legs went viral with over 5.9 million hits. The cake (Pictured far right) was completely sugar and gluten free, using carrots, apples, bananas, and pumpkin seeds. The bottom tier was iced in beetroot & apple puree and the top iced with parsnip, carrot and swede puree. Lynsey Mclean, owner of SugarRush Baking Company said "I was delighted to be asked to bake a birthday cake for Ambam and had a lot of fun designing it." In addition to helping Ambam celebrate his birthday, the SugarRush Baking company also raised over ÂŁ1,000 towards gorilla conservation by taking part in the Aspinall Foundation's charity 5k run and baking the delicious gorillathemed cupcakes shown below!

Children's reading can 'dip' during the long summer holidays. The Summer Reading Challenge is a national reading campaign which gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence. Because everything changes when we read. The Challenge is for children aged four to 11. There are rewards to collect and a medal and certificate for those who finish. It’s a fun way to encourage children to love books and become confident readers. Winning a medal gives them a great sense of achievement too. Children who aren’t reading on their own yet can take part by sharing books or using audio books. We want everyone to have fun with reading this summer! Mythical Maze runs in all East Sussex libraries from 12th July to 13th September. To join in, visit your local library. But hurry! You wouldn’t want to myth out on the fun…. Ask Alison...
Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison, We have a son in Year 3 at Primary school who really struggles with having to do new things, changes or new people in his class. He gets himself into a real state and shouts and screams at home. At school he gets very worked up and runs and hides. We don’t know how to help him or where to go for help ourselves. Thank you for your letter helping children manage overwhelming feelings is something that comes up a lot through emails and phone calls from parents. Anxiety is a natural emotion that we all feel from time to time. It is our body’s way of preparing us for a challenge. When we perceive a threat or a stressful situation our body wants us to be ready to deal with it and therefore releases adrenaline into our system. It is the adrenaline that causes the flight fright flock or freeze reaction. For some children their survival system is highly tuned and takes over, they feel flooded by this anxious feeling and can feel completely overwhelmed. Their brain functions alter and their body’s survival functions take over. This causes a number of physical reactions in their body’s which they feel they have very little control over: Feeling shakey, sick or experiencing stomach cramps or feeling dizzy or faint, breathing fast or having trouble breathing, increased heart beat, sweats and palpitations. All of these are designed to keep them alert and ready for action. It sounds as though your son is experiencing some of these symptoms and is overwhelmed by them and that they are affecting his ability to enjoy life and manage school. There are several things you can do to help him. The first is helping him talk about the feelings he is experiencing, when they happen and how he manages them. Explore when they come and what he does to help himself manage. Square breathing is something I teach to children. Breathe in through their nose for the count of 4. Hold for the count of 4 and then breathe out for the count of 4 and hold again for the count of 4. I get children to do this 3 times. Get him to practice so he is clear in what he has to do before he is anxious. Collect strategies that other people in the family use and try them out. Visualisation and calm thinking is another one that works well with children, as does Yoga.
2020
If these strategies are not sufficient to help him manage then I would suggest you need to ask for specialist support for him. This can come via your GP with a request for CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) or via school and trained practitioners within school or trained practitioners outside. Dear Alison Our son who is in Y8 at Secondary school has just been diagnosed with Tourettes. He has small muscle ticks as though he is shrugging and a cough when he becomes stressed. He cannot walk past a light switch without touching it and will often do things in threes – tap the table or pat his leg. He constantly fidgets and cannot sit still. He is struggling at school and keeps getting told off for tapping and disturbing others. Should we tell them of his diagnosis? Tourette’s is a neurological condition involving involuntary movements and or vocalisations called ‘tics’ Boys are 4 times more likely to have this condition than girls and the popular portrayal of adults with Tourette’s uttering obscene words (known as coprolalia) is extremely unhelpful. Tics seem to get worse between 10 and 12. Many young people with Tourette’s find that their tics lessen or disappear by the time they get to 18. Research by the Tourette’s Action Charity has looked at Tourette’s in school and has stated that ‘schools can play a key role in helping students with this condition.’ Many of the children reported difficulties in concentrating as they have to work hard at keeping the tics under control. Children with Tourette’s are also more vulnerable to teasing by other students and so if school is aware of your son’s condition then they can watch out for and support him if this happens. Some schools support young people with a designated person who they meet up with to talk about school and how this is going. Some students find knowing they have one person they can go to at any time really helpful. Tics can be affected by stressful situations and many children with Tourette’s state their tics can be different in different situations and at different times. Most children with Tourette’s will have or may develop other conditions which can often
include ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, sleeping difficulties and mood fluctuations. Tourette’s does not affect IQ and is not a learning disability but it can present barriers to learning. The research found that involving school in the understanding of Tourette’s increased staff awareness and lowered the level of children being told off or sent out due to their tics and supported the young person accessing support. Dear Alison My daughter is in Year 6 and is due to move to secondary school in September. When our son moved it took him ages to settle and the whole transition process was very painful. We would like to support our daughter so that the same thing does not happen to her. What do you suggest? Moving to a Secondary school is a big change for all children and one that will make then slightly anxious. It is a really important move and one that will be linked to anxiety and excitement. The most important thing is for you to talk about the move and to help her think about how to manage this. She needs to know you are there but are not overly worried as you believe she is ready and will manage this well. This containment of her anxiety will be really important. Talk about all the things that you think she will enjoy at the new school and listen to any worries or questions she has. Don’t just answer them and take away the opportunity for her to be active in finding out for herself. Help her think about the answer and then support her finding out. Normalise the event and ensure that if she starts to become overwhelmed by it that you have the space and time to think about it with her. All schools support children in Year 6 with work on Transition and this will include visits to her new school as well as staff from her new school visiting her Primary School. They will also do transition days when they will help the children think about what might be different and how to manage situations. Just remember that a transition is not only about the time prior to the move but also the time after the move has happened. Both times will need to be thought about and will include some sadness at what she has lost and some excitement about what is ahead.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: • Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions,
