¿Temporada baja?

Estamos ya inmersos en la época que hasta hace muy poco se consideraba temporada baja de golf.

Desaparecían los extranjeros y los jugadores nacionales no conseguían ocupar el espacio que dejaban.Estos, además, estaban acostumbrados a "correspondencias", descuentos impresionantes y otras Antonio Sánchez bicocas que hacían bajar la facturación de los clubes a los niveles más bajos del año.

Con el tiempo la temporada alta se fue alargando y la baja dejó poco a poco de serlo tanto y se fue acortando.

Vivimos momentos de incertidumbres y no sabemos si este próximo verano va a volver a ser como antes, más bien tirando a mal, o se va a mantener la tónica de los últimos tiempos en los que los meses de estío no han sido un desastre tan grande.

El mercado nacional está de capa caída, ya lo sabemos, pero no hay que caer en el pesimismo anticipadamente.

Si se aplican políticas inteligentes de promoción y los "ajustes" necesarios, los resultados pueden ser mejor de lo esperado.

Todos, o casi todos, parecen estar en el secreto de los que hay que hacer para lograr el éxito en momentos complicados: buena relación calidad/precio, servicio y servicio, detalles que"enganchen", etc.,etc... Pues apliquemos, al menos, la receta y que no se pueda decir que no lo intentamos todo.

La próxima temporada va a ser mucho mejor, sin duda, y el mercado inglés, si se concreta alguna iniciativa importante en proceso de desarrollo, volverá a ser el que era.

Low season?

We are now in the midst of a period which, until recently, was considered the low season for golf.

The foreign players had already left and national (Spanish) golfers failed to fill the gap. The latter were also used to “interchanges”, incredible discounts and other bargains that resulted in the clubs’ revenues falling to their lowest levels of the year.

Over time, the high season grew longer and the rest of the year became less and less a low period, per se, or at least a shorter one.

These are uncertain times and we don’t know if the forthcoming summer will be like it was before – in effect, pretty bad – or if it will maintain the trend of recent years during which the summer months have not been such a huge disaster.

The national market is down in the dumps – we all know that – but that’s no reason to slip into premature pessimism.

If intelligent promotional policies are applied, as well as the necessary “adjustments” (so fashionable at the moment), the results could end up being better than expected.

Everyone, or nearly everyone, seems to agree about the secret of what to do to achieve success during difficult times: ensure a good relationship between quality and price, service and service, small details that “hook” people, etc., etc. So let’s at least apply the prescription and no-one one can say we didn’t try everything.

The following season is going to be much better, without a doubt, and the British market will once again be what it was – if a key initiative under development comes to fruition.

esa edad ganó el Georgia State Amateur y sorprendió a todo el mundo por el gran talento que exhibía con tan pocos años y el descaro con el que se enfrentaba –y encima ganaba– a jugadores mayores.

Ha llovido mucho desde entonces, pero este deporte ha visto emerger a lo largo de las décadas a golfistas prodigiosos que empezaron a demostrar su extraordinaria calidad cuando no habían llegado siquiera a la adolescencia. El caso de Tiger Woods es paradigmático. El problablemente mejor jugador de todos los tiempos –con permiso de Jack Nicklaus– ha batido casi todos los records, y empezó muy pronto a hacerlo. Con sólo un par de añitos ya aparecía en programas de televisión mostrando sus habilidades con los palos de golf. A los 8 ganaba el primero de los cinco títulos del Mundial Junior. Ganó más de 200 torneos junior y a los 11 años pasó todo el año sin una derrota. Nadie había protagonizado nunca un año así. Su fama se acrecentaría definitivamente cuando se convirtió en el primer jugador en ganar tres US Amateurs consecutivos. Tenía 20 años. Debutó con esa edad como profesional y en tres meses ganó dos torneos. En 1997 sorprendió de nuevo al mundo al ganar el

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, and over the past few decades the sport has seen other prodigious golfers start to show their extraordinary qualities even before they have reached adolescence.

The case of Tiger Woods is paradigmatic. Arguably the best golfer in the history of the game – with apologies to Jack Nicklaus – he has broken nearly all the records… and he began doing so very early in his career.

Tras su incontestable dominio en el golf mundial durante años, llegó su viacrucis particular y ahora intenta recuperar el juego que tanta gloria le dio. Otro de los jóvenes prodigios de este deporte, el norirlandés Rory McIlroy, ocupa ahora el trono que durante tantísimo tiempo perteneció a Tiger, y parece que el europeo no está dispuesto a levantarse pronto de ese cómodo asiento.

cos años y que ahora, en los comienzos de su veintena vital, están subiéndose a las barbas de los treinta y cuarentañeros golfistas que han dominado el golf mundial hasta hace pocos años.

Parece que es el tiempo de los jovencitos. Y hay unos cuantos que vienen pegando fuerte, aunque algunos acaban tendidos en la lona sin apenas haber empezado el combate.

Hace unas semanas saltaba a la palestra informativa el caso de un chino que se convertía en el jugador más joven en disputar un torneo del Circuito Europeo, concretamente el Volvo China Open, que se dirimió en el Tianjin Binhai Lake Golf Club, a 130 kilómetros al sureste de Pekín.

este deporte al empezar esta competición del Tour con 13 años y 173 días.

El jovencísimo golfista chino logró un sitio entre los 156 que disputaron el Volvo China Open gracias a la fase de clasificación disputada en Hangzhou unas semanas antes. Al final no logró la proeza de superar el corte, lo que hubiese supuesto otro auténtico terremoto informativo.

El muchacho selló sendas rondas de 77 y 79 y, con un acumulado de +12, se quedó a una docena de golpes de los que pasaron la siega del segundo día del torneo. Otros cinco jugadores (tres de ellos profesionales) quedaron por detrás de él en la clasificación final.

Ronda de 63 golpes con 12 años Guan, que vino al mundo un 25 de octubre de 1998, comenzó a jugar al golf a los cuatro años y desde entonces ha ganado numerosos títulos en todo el mundo. Uno de los más relevantes fue el World Junior de San Diego el año pasado, competición que empezó nada menos que con una ronda de 63 golpes (nueve birdies y ni un solo bogey) y que terminó con una victoria por once golpes sobre el segundo clasificado.

Este avezado hijo de un pequeño agricultor de la provincia de Guandong ha sido “fichado” por las autoridades chinas y, al igual que todos los grandes jóvenes prodigios chinos del deporte, estudia en uno de los centros especiales creados para que estos niños y adolescentes puedan exprimir al máximo sus cualidades deportivas y estudiar al mismo tiempo. El problema es que ello conlleva el sacrificio de estar muy alejado de sus familias. Guan es un buen alumno y de momento está sacando buenas calificaciones en sus estudios, lo que demuestra su disciplina y capacidad de sacrificio, sobre todo porque se ve obligado a viajar bastante para jugar en otros países. Y cuando está fuera compitiendo, dice, no se lleva los deberes del cole. “No tengo problemas a la hora de compagiar estudios y golf”, asegura Guan, quien está entre los mejores de su clase. “Hago un gran esfuerzo y mis notas son altas”, afirma.

His fame increased definitively when he became the first player to win three consecutive US Amateur titles. He was 20, the same age he debuted as a pro, and within three months he had won two US PGA Tour events. In 1997, he once again surprised the world by winning the US Masters at Augusta in an unprecedented manner: at 21 he became the youngest player to win a major, by the largest margin of strokes, and with the lowest score.

The legend had begun.

After his unrivalled domination of the global game for several years he suffered the well-publicised personal ordeal of his infidelities and divorce, and now he is trying to recover the touch that gave him such glory.

Another young golfing prodigy, Rory McIlroy, now occupies the throne that belonged to Tiger for so long, and it seems as though the Northern Irishman is not willing to give up this comfortable seat any time soon.

Rory is one of the promising young golfers who emerged a few years ago and are now snapping at the heels of the thirty and fortysomething players who have dominated the world of golf until recently. It seems as though this is the era of the young pups, and there are others coming up strongly behind them, although it is also true that some will end up on the canvas almost before the main fight has begun.

A few weeks ago, the case of a Chinese golfer hit the headlines – the youngest player to compete in a European Tour event, specifically the Volvo China Open at the Tianjin Binhai Lake Golf Club, 130 kilometres south-east of Beijing. Guan Tian-lang wrote his name in the history books by teeing up in the first round aged just 13 years and 173 days.

The youngster gained a place among the 156 players competing in the event through a pre-qualifier held a few weeks earlier in Hangzhou. In the

mundial. Atendiendo a la clasificación mundial masculina, China todavía tiene mucho trabajo por delante, ya que ningun jugador de ese país aparece entre los 300 primeros de ese ranking.

Feng tuvo el honor de convertirse en la primera golfista china en enrolarse en el LPGA Tour, al que accedió mediante su primera incursión en la difícil Escuela de Clasificación. Eso ocurrió en 2008, cuando tenía 19 años. Hasta ahora ha cosechado tres triunfos, dos de ellos en el LPGA of Japan Tour y el otro en el Ladies European Tour, donde registró su última victoria, en el World Ladies Championship, el pasado mes de marzo. En febrero estuvo a punto de hacer historia para su

país y convertise en la primera jugadora china en ganar en el Circuito Norteamericano Femenino, pero al final fue derrotada en el cuádruple playoff mediante el que se dirimió el HSBC Women´s Championship en el campo de Tanah Merah Country Club, en Singapur. The problem is that this also means he has to suffer the sacrifice of being separated from his family – and far away.

Guan is said to be a diligent student and is currently achieving good results in his studies, which shows his discipline and capacity for

sacrifice, especially as he has to travel long distances to compete in other countries. And, when he travels away, he doesn’t take his homework with him. “I don’t have any problem combining my studies with golf,” says Guan, who is one of the best in his class. “I make a huge effort and my marks are high.”

After missing the cut in the Volvo China Open, he was left determined to beat another record, that set by Jason Hak who, at 14, played all four rounds of the 2008 Hong Kong Open.

República China en ganar un torneo oficial del Circuito Europeo, el Masters de Singapur, superando nada menos que a Ernie Els en el tramo final del la competición. Cuatro años después y en el mismo torneo, el actual número uno chino, Liang Wenchong, conseguía su primer y hasta ahora único triunfo en el Circuito Europeo, y, como resultado de ello, se convertía en el primer jugador chino en ganar la orden de mérito del Circuito Asiático.

Los aficionados al golf chinos, que cada vez son más gracias a la celebración de más torneos de relieve en su país y, sobre todo, a las hazañas deportivas de sus compatriotas, tienen ahora un nuevo ídolo a seguir en el jovencísimo Guan, un chico muy aplicado en todas sus asignaturas, especialmente en una que le está haciedo famoso en todo el mundo: el golf.

Lo que está claro es que, aparte de su indudable calidad con los palos, Guan tiene ese otro factor tan importante en la vida, sobre todo en la de un golfista: suerte. La diosa Fortuna, por ejemplo, estuvo descaradamente de su parte en el Volvo China Open, ya que sin su ayuda no hubiese disputado el torneo. Y es que no habría conseguido plaza en las competiciones clasificatorias, donde la lograban los tres primeros (Guan terminó cuarto), de no haber sido porque el ganador de esa previa supo posteriormente que ya contaba con una invitación de Volvo para jugar el torneo del Circuito Europeo.

"No podría estar más feliz, estoy muy entusiasmado", dijo el espigado adolescente al saber que podría disputar el torneo que, con su record de precocidad, han hecho saltar las alarmas informativas mundiales.

Guan is still extremely young and, in theory, has a brilliant career ahead of him. He is also quite ambitious and has set some tough short-term goals. “I want to qualify for the US Open,” he says. This, of course, would be a huge step along his seemingly speedy path to global success.

What seems clear is that male golfers in China are keen to follow the example of their female compatriots, who are starting to shine on the international stage.

There is the case, for example, of Shanshan Feng, Rookie of the Year on the 2008 US LPGA Tour, and currently sixth in the women’s world rankings. Looking at the men’s world ranking, China still has a long way to go, with no player in the top 300.

Feng had the honour of being the first Chinese golfer to join the LPGA Tour, gaining a place via the demanding Qualifying School.

This was in 2007 when she was just 19. Since then she has won three times, twice on the LPGA of Japan Tour and once on the Ladies European Tour – her most recent victory, the World Ladies Championship in March.

In February, she almost made history by becoming the first Chinese player to win on the

LPGA Tour but in the end she lost in a fourway play-off for the HSBC Women’s Championship title at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. American Angela Stanford secured the win, thus ending a run of 14 years during which no US golfer had won an LPGA Tour event played in Asia.

What is clear is that, apart from his undoubted skill with a golf club, Guan has that other important factor in life, in particular for a golfer: good luck.

If victorious Feng would have been able to re-live the glory moments enjoyed by Chinese golf in 2003 when the game’s “godfather”, Zhang Lianwei, became the first People’s Republic of China player to win an official European Tour event, the Singapore Masters, beating none other than Ernie Els over the final stages.

rent Chinese number one, Liang Wenchong, secured his first and to date only European Tour win, thus becoming the first Chinese golfer to top the Asian Tour order of merit.

Chinese golf fans, increasing in numbers as more major tournaments are held in their country and they closely follow the growing success of their compatriots, now have a new idol in Guan, a young lad who is showing great application in all his subjects, especially one which is making him famous around the globe: golf.

What is clear is that, apart from his undoubted skill with a golf club, Guan has that other important factor in life, in particular for a golfer: good luck. The god of fortune, for example, was by his side for the Volvo China Open because, without his help, he would not have been able to play in the tournament. He would not have gained a place from the prequalifier because only the top three qualified and he was fourth, but the winner later learned he had an invitation to compete in the European Tour event.

“I could not be happier. I’m really delighted,” the willowy youngster said on finding out he had qualified after all, a feat that has now set off news alarms around the world.

El peso de los apellidos hora que se cumple el primer aniversario del fallecimiento del golfista español más genial de todos los tiempos, el inigualable Seve Ballesteros, su hijo Javier ha competido –como amateur invitado– en su primer torneo de profesionales. Ha sido una experiencia muy emotiva para él porque el escenario (Sant Cugat, Barcelona) es el mismo donde 38 años antes debutó su progenitor como profesional, en el Campeonato de España de 1974. Tenía entonces Seve 17 años y una espectacular carrera deportiva –una de las más deslumbrantes del mundo– por delante.

Su relevo, la verdad, no lo ha tomado nadie en el golf patrio, donde el que más ha brillado hasta ahora en méritos deportivos ha sido su gran admirador y amigo Txema Olazábal, el dos veces campeón del Masters de Augusta, que atesora seis victorias en el Circuito Americano y 23 en el Tour Europeo.

También ha deslumbrado bastante Sergio García, que en sus momentos más álgidos llegó a ocupar, en 2008, la segunda plaza en el ranking mundial, sólo antecedido en la clasificación por el extraordinario Tiger Woods .

No hay duda de que Miguel Ángel Jiménez es un golfista extraordinario, que Álvaro Quirós pega fuerte en todos los sentidos, y que otro ramillete de jugadores españoles brilla –sin llegar a deslumbrar, desgraciadamente– en el panorama internacional.

do surge la gran noticia y los focos mediáticos iluminan con gran intensidad a la que, esperemos, sea una figura en ciernes.

Y la verdad es que no lo ha hecho nada mal el joven Ballesteros, con rondas de 65, 73 y 68 golpes en la primera prueba del Peugeot Tour, en la que se enfrentaba, entre otros, a jugadores que han ganado en los circuitos Europeo, Seniors, Challenge, Alps y Peugeot.

“Me gusta mucho jugar con gente que juega mejor que tú”, dice con modestia, ”porque se aprende muchísimo. Por ejemplo en Madrid juego mucho con Pedro Oriol y entrenas de otra forma, pones más de tu parte”.

Curiosamente, Javier no sabía que Seve había disputado su primer torneo profesional en San Cugat: “Cuando estuve en el Castelló Masters me dijo Javier Gervás que, si me apetecía jugar algún torneo, se lo dijese. Como venía a jugar el Campeonato de Barcelona, le pedí invitación para el Peugeot y me la dio. Cuando me apunté no sabía que era el club donde había empezado mi padre, y la verdad es cuando lo supe me hizo especial ilusión”.

Javier Ballesteros Botín, apellidos de enormes resonancias deportivas y económicas en nuestro país, es consciente de que la genialidad no se hereda y, a sus 21 años y con handicap 0,4, tiene los pies en el suelo y prefiere no hacerse demasiadas ilusiones. Su sueño es llegar a ser un buen golfista profesional y vivir si es posible de este deporte, que tan intensamente le ha envuelto desde que era un niño gracias a su padre. Tiene un enorme parecido físico con él, pero su juego está aún “muy lejos” del que hizo a su progenitor famoso en todo el mundo. “No tengo ninguna presión por ser el hijo de Seve, porque no tengo nada que demostrarle a nadie, sólo a mí”, asegura.

Su objetivo es por ahora disfrutar de este deporte: “No me pongo metas cuando juego este o cualquier otro torneo; y mucho más como amateur, lo que hay que hacer es disfrutar y aprender”.

De momento está cursando tercero de Derecho en la capital de España, adonde regresó tras haber iniciado sus estudios en Estados Unidos. “Estuve un mes y medio en la Universidad de George Washington y no estaba contento, tenía otras expectativas”, explica.

“El golf, bien, pero el resto no me convencía”, añade. ”No era por estar lejos de casa”, prosigue, “porque ya había estudiado en Inglaterra muchos años, pero faltaba algo”. La noticia de la enfermedad de su padre fue lo que le hizo tomar la decisión de volver a su país.

Hacerse profesional es algo que ha estado anidando en su cabeza desde hace mucho tiempo, pero sin marcarse plazos: “Siempre he jugado al golf, estuve en los equipos nacionales entre los 14 y 16 años, y el hecho de tenerlo en casa ha hecho que siempre me plantease ser profesional de golf algún día; pero primero tengo que terminar la carrera, es algo que me han inculcado mucho mis padres, quizás más mi padre porque le faltó a él, pero los dos siempre me han insistido mucho, y es mi prioridad. Luego ya veremos. No tengo plazos, no quiere decir que en cuanto termine la universidad me haga profesional, en ese momento veremos qué pasa”.

Cuando llegue la hora de la verdad, tomará la decisión que él estime correcta y –dice– contará con el total apoyo de su madre, Carmen, hija del poderoso banquero Emilio Botín.

El joven Javier parece un chico juicioso y serio que sabe lo que quiere y va a luchar por intentar conseguirlo. Conque haya heredado una pequeña parte del talento y la fuerza de voluntad y capacidad de trabajo de su padre, el futuro le será propicio. Veremos.

Joyce Wethered AUTÉNTICA FUERA DE SERIE Combinaba la elegancia femenina con el tipo de precisión que ningún golfista de su época era capaz de lograr. Sorprendió a Henry Cotton con su golpeo, y a Glenna Collett Vare con su tenacidad. Joyce Wethered, que más tarde se convirtió en Lady Heathcoat-Armory, fue venerada como la reina del golf amateur británico. Bobby Jones la consideraba el mejor golfista –hombre o mujer– que había visto en su vida.

acida el 17 November de 1901 en Surrey, Wethered ganó el British Women's Amateur Championship en cuatro ocasiones, el English Ladies' Championship cinco veces seguidas, y fue el eje central en la fundación de la Curtis Cup. Bobby Jones tuvo la oportunidad de jugar con Wethered desde los tees traseros antes del British Amateur en 1930. Con una brisa que soplaba desde el mar, Wethered no falló ni un solo golpe, y ya, despreocupada y con el partido ganado, hizo tres putts en el 17 y registró un total de 75 en el Old Course. Fue una ronda como Jones no había visto nunca.

"No he jugado al golf con nadie, hombre o mujer, aficionado o profesional, que me haya hecho sentir tan completamente desbordado'', dijo Jones. “No fue tanto el resultado que hizo”, añadió, “como la forma en que lo hizo. Era imposible esperar que la señorita Wethered no fallara ningún golpe, y así fue”.

Henry Cotton jugó un partido de exhibición con Wethered después de que Joyce se casara con Sir John Heathcoat-Armory en 1937. Ella mandó la bola a 216 metros desde el tee y exhibió una gran brillantez en todos los tiros. Algunos pensaban que Wethered podría jugar en el equipo británico de la Walker Cup, y Cotton así lo creía. "El partido esperado entre ella y yo tuvo tanta fama de antemano que, cuando llegó el día o estábamos la altura o una de nosotros caería bajo la presión”, dijo Joyce.

Fue Wethered quien embocó cuatro birdies en 15 hoyos y Collett la que perdió, por un marcador de 4 y 3. Wethered derrotó luego a Cecil Leitch en la final y consiguió su tercera 1920: English Ladies' Championship victoria en el British Women's Amateur.

Poco a poco se le fueron complicando las cosas, y para la hora del almuerzo Collett sólo llevaba una ventaja de 2 arriba. Bernard Darwin escribió que la impresión general de los británicos era: "Todo está bien ahora. Ya lo verás. Joyce va a ganar con comodidad”.

La derrota 3 a 1 de Collett indica que Wethered, en efecto, ganó cómodamente. Volvieron a encontrarse en la inauguración de la Curtis Cup, con la policía despejando el camino a casa de las dos heroínas, y Wethered regresó a Inglaterra, donde la única competición que jugó fueron los foursomes mixtos Worplesdon, un torneo que ganó ocho veces con siete diferentes compañeros.

Joyce falleció en 1997 en Londres un día antes de haber cumplido 96 años.

ethered (born on 17 November 1901, in Surrey, and passed away on 18 November 1997 in London) won the British Women's Amateur Championship four times and the English Ladies' Championship five times in a row, and was a leading force in the founding of the Curtis Cup. Jones had the opportunity to play with Wethered from the back tees before the British Amateur in 1930. With a breeze blowing off the sea, Wethered did not miss a shot, half-heartedly three-putted the 17th from four metres after the match was over and went around the Old Course in 75. It was as clean a round of golf as Jones had ever seen.

"I have not played golf with anyone, man or woman, amateur or professional, who made me feel so utterly outclassed,'' said Jones. "It was not so much the score she made as the way she made it. It was impossible to expect that Miss Wethered would ever miss a shot – and she never did."

Cotton played in an exhibition with Wethered after she married Sir John Heathcoat-Armory in 1937. She hit the ball 220 metres off the tee and could play low-flying shots with the mashie that exhibited brilliant touch. Some felt that at her best Wethered could play number four or number five on the British Walker Cup team, and Cotton agreed. "In my time, no golfer has stood out so far ahead of his or her contemporaries as Lady Heathcoat-Armory,'' said Cotton. "I do not think a golf ball has ever been hit, except perhaps by Harry Vardon, with such a straight flight by any other person."

Wethered established her reputation in the US by twice thwarting the efforts of Collett Vare in the British Ladies' Amateur. Their first match occurred at Troon in 1925, just after the American had won her second US Women's Amateur and the French Open Championship. "The match anticipated between her and myself was worked up to such a pitch beforehand that, when the day came, one of two things was almost bound to happen. Either we should rise to the occasion or one of us would fall under the strain of it.''

It was Wethered who rose – making four birdies in 15 holes – and Collett Vare who fell, by a score of 4&3. Wethered went on to defeat Cecil Leitch in the final for her third British Women's Amateur title. Four years later, Wethered and Collett Vare met again in the final at St. Andrews. Wethered was coming out of a threeyear retirement, but Collett Vare was coming off her fourth of five US Women's Amateur titles. With an outward nine of 34, the American went 5-up. At the 12th, she had a one-metre putt to go 6-up and missed. Slowly the holes began to come back, and at the lunch break Collett Vare was only 2-up. Bernard Darwin wrote that the general impression of the British people was, "It's all right now.

You'll see. Joyce will win comfortably."

The 3&1 defeat of Collett Vare indicates that Wethered did, indeed, win comfortably. They met again in the inaugural Curtis Cup, with the police clearing the road for the two heroines, and Wethered returned home to England, where the only competition she played was the Worplesdon mixed foursomes, an event she won eight times with seven different partners.

Are coaching gurus really necessary?

ubba Watson’s triumph in the recent Masters at Augusta brought a broad smile to my face for two very different reasons. The first was from a mercenary point of view as a small interest in the player with Victor Chandler, at the attractive odds of 55/1, returned a very handsome dividend. The real fun, however, was the debunking of all the palaver regarding coaches which has become the norm for tournament professionals in recent years: the seeming necessity to have different coaches for each aspect of the game.

Driving, iron play, pitching and then, of course, putting are all different skills and, apparently, all need separate coaches. Yet another one, or maybe two, are required to keep the head clear of clutter while physiotherapists join the party to ensure the player can swing a golf club without straining himself unduly.

come something of a circus and a far cry from the time when the likes of Bob Torrance and his fellow competitors lugged both themselves and their clubs to tournaments on public transport. Indeed, as they slogged their way around the half dozen or so tournaments which made up the “European Tour” in those far off days the same Bob Torrance could never have dreamt of the riches which would come his way as a teacher to the stars of the modern professional game. Talk about inventing jobs? The entire “kit and caboodle” is enough to make a cat laugh.

Yes indeed, the cult of the coach received a severe bashing when Bubba Watson donned the green jacket as the new Masters champion and became the 14th different major title winner in a row. In a sport which has become more and more in thrall to the “coaching gurus” it is a delight to report that the latest champion never had a golf lesson in his life and has never even

watched his own swing on video.

In truth the professional at the golf club where Bubba played as a teenager is on record as saying, “Bubba knows nothing about the golf swing. Not one thing. He grew up with Boo Weekley, who was a keen student, but Bubba just wasn’t interested. There is no teaching what he has, no substitute for it. It is almost freakish what he does to create clubhead speed.” When he first showed an interest as a boy his father simply told him to go out and swing the club and he has played with his own individual, some might even say eccentric, style ever since.

seems somehow refreshing that a player can go against the modern trend and succeed at the highest level where many, who have trodden the path of received wisdom, have failed miserably.

Explaining his philosophy Bubba said, “I just play the game, the game that I love. And truthfully it is like Seve played. He hit shots that were unbelievable. And, if you watch Phil Mickelson, he goes for broke. I attack; I always attack. I don’t like to go for the centre of the greens. I want to hit the incredible shot. Who doesn’t? That is why we play the game of golf.”

The graduate of Georgia University certainly hit some incredible shots on his way to victory at Augusta and, despite now being a major champion, Watson says none of this will change him. “We don’t know the future. We don’t know anything.

Hopefully I keep having the passion to play golf and keep doing what I am doing. The thing is golf is not my everything.”

A breath of fresh air In the world of modern golf Watson is like a breath of fresh air who does indeed put me in mind of the similarly self-taught Seve Ballesteros. He also developed a style all his own, without any interference from people who thought they knew better. To Bubba the game is simple: just stand up to the ball and hit it as hard as you can. Shades of John Daly?

Maybe in terms of distance and silky touch around the greens but there the similarity ends and, quite frankly, ends abruptly.

Night after night “on the tiles” are, nowadays, not for this God-fearing Masters champion who is prone to tears at the drop of a hat. Explaining his change of lifestyle Bubba said, “A few years ago I was living the wrong way until my wife, my caddie and my friends all told me I was going the wrong way. In 2004 I gave myself to the Lord and so I had to change and it has been a slow process.”

Watson is an unassuming young man who, unlike many of his peers, is not frantically seeking the limelight. While donning the famous green jacket he simply commented, “I don’t play golf for fame: I just wanna be me and play golf. I am just Bubba.”

So, despite the dominance of players from Europe in the world rankings, an American has won the first major of the season. Disappointment was again the order of the day for Lee Westwood who chalked up yet another “could have, should have” major championship when he tied for third with Phil Mickelson, Peter Hanson and Matt Kuchar.

Truth to tell, the Englishman left all others in the shade when it came to propelling the ball from tee to green but it was on the tightly mown surfaces that his troubles started. Lee managed to wield the flat stick on no less than 19 occasions more than Phil Michelson, including a number of misses from less than a metre.

The game within a game has proven, yet again, to be Westwood’s Achilles heel and unless he can find a solution to that problem his major trophy cabinet will remain bare. Now approaching his 39th birthday, Lee is in serious danger of joining the list of great players who, despite getting close on umpteen occasions, were unable to break their major duck and that, in my opinion, would be a tragedy.

Ha diseñado campos en España como Costa Esuri (Huelva), Valle del Este (Almería), Tecina en La Gomera, y ahora está haciendo otro de 9 hoyos en Navarra. Fuera de nuestro país acaba de terminar uno en Turquía y antes había hecho otro en Isla Margarita (Venezuela). Tiene nuevos proyecto, que le reclaman de inmediato, en Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) y Lima (Perú) Como director de golf estuvo diez años en Islantilla (Huelva,) "donde también hicimos la construcción y parte del diseño", y luego otros tres en La Quinta (Marbella). Y eso que apenas ronda los 50.

He has designed courses in Spain including Costa Esuri (Huelva), Valle del Este (Almería) and Tecina in La Gomera, and now he is completing nine holes at Isla Margarita (Venezuela). –¿Se puede uno ganar la vida solo como diseñador de campos en estos momentos?

–Como diseñador "puro" y en España, ahora está muy complicado. A no ser que tuvieses proyectos firmados anteriormente...

–¿Como diseñador tiene algún ídolo?,¿es fan de alguien?, ¿qué influencias reconoce?

–De los antiguos me gusta sobre todo Mackenzie, y de los más modernos, Tom Fazio, por su concepto del diseño, y quizá Nicklaus por su profesionalidad.

–¿Cuál es la situación del golf en España ahora?

–En estos momentos de crisis hay que ser realistas: tenemos más oferta que demanda. La situación no es buena, aunque se va recuperando.

–Entonces, ¿cree que tardaremos mucho en salir de ésta, o estamos ya en camino?

–Yo creo que los campos buenos, los que ofrecen una buena relación calidad/precio, sí saldrán pronto de la recesión. El resto lo tiene mal.

–Usted, que ha sido cocinero (director de campo) antes que fraile, ¿diría que los campos comercializan bien su producto?

–Definitivamente, no.

–¿Qué piensa que habría que hacer para atraer más jugadores a Andalucía?, ¿cogerles de la oreja?

–Primero debemos de tener una estrategia a medio y largo plazo, y no ir a salto de mata, con ofertas que al final lo único que hacen es tirar los precios... Hay que dar más calidad por el dinero que paga la gente y buscar mercados nuevos: es la única manera de competir.

–¿Otros destinos son mejores que nosotros?, ¿Turquía, Portugal...?

–Son diferentes. Turquía es un destino muy pequeño, con mucha calidad y una magnífica relación calidad/precio, pero reducido. No deberíamos preocuparnos si nos atenemos al volumen que puede asumir. Y Portugal, que es nuestro mayor rival, siempre ha estado ahí. En nuestro entorno, pocos nos pueden hacer sombra. Italia parece que está espabilando un poco, pero no veo otros que puedan desplazarnos. Para trayectos más largos, Florida sigue siendo clave, y ahora surgen nuevos destinos en Asia.

–¿Se han hecho demasiados campos en Andalucía?

–Se han hecho demasiados malos campos y pocos buenos –¿Los jugadores buscan sólo precio o también calidad?

–Creo que los británicos buscan calidad, y otros mercados, con menos cultura de golf, van a precios.

Is it possible to make a living as a golf course designer in these current times?

As just a “pure” designer, and in Spain, it’s now very difficult. Unless you had projects signed off before...

As a designer do you have any idol? Are you a fan of anyone? What have been your influences?

Of the older ones, above all I liked (Alister) MacKenzie; and, of the modern ones, Tom Fazio, for his concept of design, and perhaps (Jack) Nicklaus for his professionalism.

What is the current situation with golf in Spain?

In these times of crisis you have to be realistic: we have more offer than demand. The situation is not good, even though it’s recovering.

So do you believe it will take a long time to get out of this situation, or are we on that path already?

I believe that the good courses, those that offer a good relationship between quality and price, will come out of recession soon. For the others, things remain bad.

You have been “chef” (golf course manager) before “monk”… would you say that golf courses market themselves well?

Definitely no.

What do you believe needs to be done to attract more golfers to Andalucía… tug them by the ears?

First, we need a medium and long-term strategy, and to avoid messing things up by offering discounts that knock down prices. We have to provide more quality for the price that people pay, and seek new markets: this is the only way to compete.

Are other destinations better than ours? Turkey, Portugal…?

They are different. Turkey is a very small destination, with a lot of quality and a magnificent relationship between quality and price, but limited. We don’t need to worry if we take into account the volume they can cater for.

And Portugal, which is our main competitor, has always been there. In our home environment, no one can put us in the shade. Italy seems to be waking up a bit, but I don’t see any others that could replace us. For longer journeys, Florida remains the key, and there are new destinations in Asia.

Have too many courses been built in Andalucía?

Too many bad courses have been built, and few good ones.

Do golfers seek only good prices or also quality?

I believe the British seek quality, and other markets, with less of a golf culture, go for price.

"Por lo que respecta a esta tercera edición -sigue Rubio- estamos muy, muy ilusionados, y contentos de que se vuelva a jugar aquí este Match Play. Espero que al menos sea similar, en cuanto al nivel de los jugadores, al del año pasado".

–¿Finca Cortesín es la mejor sede que puede tener este torneo?

–Sinceramente yo creo que si, y no quiero parecer arrogante con esta respuesta. Pienso que es la sede más completa de las que yo conozco, una sede donde están perfectamente integrados el hotel, la zona residencial que utilizan los jugadores y el campo de golf, siendo todas estas instalaciones de una calidad poco corriente. A esto, hay que añadir la excelencia de los servicios que damos aquí. En este sentido es difícilmente comparable con cualquier otra sede donde se celebran torneos del circuito europeo.

“Magnificent venue for a great tournament” Finca Cortesín president Vicente Rubio says he is very satisfied with the evolution of each edition so far of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

El presidente de Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf & Spa, con Ian Poulter, ganador de la pasada edición del Volvo World Match Play Championship, y el trofeo con que se premia al campeón del torneo.

“They have been a resounding success in every way, but in a strictly sporting sense very hard to improve. Also, of course, the organisation. I believe that, as the venue, we are the best partner this tournament could have.”

Bearing all this in mind, as the club prepares to host the third edition of the tournament, and looking back at the significant initial commitment, Vicente Rubio believes the balance is tremendously positive.

“During these years,” he says, “we have succeeded in consolidating the Finca Cortesín brand, and I’m sure we have also made a contribution to strengthening the tournament, which is becoming more im-

portant and attractive each year.

“The field of players now taking part has improved considerably. You only have to look back to last year, for example, when for the first time in Spanish golf history the world number one, two and three coincided in the same tournament.

“As for this third edition, we are very, very excited and happy that the event is once again being played here. I hope it will be at least the same as last year, as far as the level of players competing is concerned.”

- Is Finca Cortesín the best venue this tournament can have?

- I sincerely believe it is, and I don’t want to seem arrogant with this reply. I believe it is the most complete venue of those I’m familiar with, a venue which is totally integrated into the hotel, the residential area that players use and the golf course, with all these amenities of a quality that is far from ordinary. Added to that is the excellence of the services we provide here. In that sense it is difficult to compare it with any other venue hosting European Tour events.

l hecho diferencial entre Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf & Spa y cualquier otra sede que acoja torneos del Tour Europeo es, sin duda, su hotel. Puede haber campos de golf magníficos para recibir pruebas como el Volvo World Match Play Championship, pero es seguro que ninguno cuenta con un hotel del lujo de este, tan cerca, tan cómodo para los jugadores y que ofrezca tantos y tan refinados servicios. –Es evidente que los jugadores aquí se sienten muy cómodos. ¿Qué comentarios han recibido de ellos?

–Ésta es ya la tercera edición del torneo que se juega en Finca Cortesín y, desde la primera, las opiniones de las grandes estrellas del golf que han pasado por aquí han sido muy, muy favorables para nosotros. Algunos estaban gratamente sorprendidos por lo bien que ellos y sus familias eran tratados aquí. Nada comparable con otras sedes de torneos. A muchos les apenaba tener que irse tras la competición.

"En el hotel -añade René- contamos con varios tipos de alojamiento; por un lado tenemos 67 suites distribuidas en los tres edificios que componen el complejo: el central, el claustro, y la zona de la piscina olímpica; y por otro contamos

con varias villas privadas que forman parte del proyecto inmobiliario de Finca Cortesín.

Las suites básicas, las juniors, cuentan con un mínimo de 52 m2, y el resto, las executives suites, comienzan con 98, lo que da una idea de la amplitud de las habitaciones.

Cuatro de nuestras suites, situadas en el edificio principal, cuentan con piscina privada lo que, por supuesto, protege mucho la intimidad de nuestros huéspedes".

–¿Cómo son las villas?

–Son casas realmente lujosas, de cuatro dormitorios, muy bien decoradas y que cuentan con los mismos servicios del hotel: limpieza, room service veinticuatro horas, etc.

Para el torneo algunos jugadores han solicitado en una de estas villas porque las conocen y en ellas pueden disfrutar más con la familia, si la traen, o amigos. Todas cuentan con piscina privada y un amplio jardín. Se sienten como en casa

he main difference between Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf & Spa and any other venue holding a European Tour event is, without a doubt, the hotel and its service. There might be numerous other magnificent courses hosting tournaments such as the Volvo World Match Play Championship but almost certainly none have the same kind of luxury hotel, so close and convenient for players, offering so many and such meticulously-maintained services.

In addition to the actual hotel itself, there are adjourning private villas featuring the same, or even better, services and amenities as if they were – in fact – a hotel suite.

For hotel manager René Zimmer, the proximity of the course and the luxury of the hotel provides added value to a resort such as this one which aims to be a reference point, a flagship establishment, in southern Europe.

“Having the golf course so close is vital, because the players can walk to the clubhouse from their villa or suite. They don’t need any transport, and that helps the organisers of a tournament of the Volvo World Match Play Championship’s magnitude.”

It’s clear that the players feel very comfortable. What comments have you received from them?

This is the third year Finca Cortesín has been the venue for this major tournament and, right from the start, the visiting golf stars’ opinions have been very, very favourable towards us. Some were pleasantly surprised at how well they and their families were treated here. Nothing comparable to other tournament venues. Many were sad to have to leave after the competition.

In the hotel we have various kinds of accommodation. On the one hand, we have 67 suites throughout the three buildings that comprise the complex: central, cloister and Olympic pool area.

And, on the other, we have various private villas that form a part of the Finca Cortesín real estate project.

All the suites have four-metre high ceilings and the basic ones, the junior suites, extend over at least 52 square metres. The others, the executive suites, range from 98 to 180 square metres, which gives an idea of the hotel’s palatial proportions. Four of our suites, located in the main building, also have their own private pool which, of course, enhances our guests’ privacy.

What are the villas like?

They are truly exceptional homes and are decorated by Ana and Cristina Calderón, who also decorated the hotel suites. They all have four bedrooms en-suite, lounge area with fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen, porch, and private garden and pool.

Naturally they also have the same services as those available in the hotel: butler, cleaning, 24-hour room service, maintenance, etc. During the tournament, they are home to the players who have come with their families and friends. The villas are available for rent or purchase, always with the added value of including the hotel services.

–Ésta va a ser nuestra tercera temporada abiertos y estamos muy satisfechos. Cada año superamos nuestras expectativas de ocupación y rentabilidad. No creo que sea un hotel caro. Tenemos el precio justo, incluso bajo, para la calidad que damos.

Todo el mundo sabe ya que en Finca Cortesín nos hemos impuesto la meta de ser uno de los hoteles más importantes de Europa y lo estamos consiguiendo. Por eso se ha invertido tanto en infraestructura, en recurso humanos, en formación, etc. Hemos trabajado mucho para poder ofrecer lo mejor a nuestros clientes, y no creo que haya ninguno que salga por la puerta pensando que ha pagado más de lo que ha recibido. La prueba es que casi todos repiten.

During the high season we also work with chef Andrea Tumbarello, who manages the Don Giovanni Cortesín restaurant. Andrea runs Don Giovanni in Madrid and has been elected the best Italian chef in Spain.

Then there is the Beach Club where, between Easter and October, you can enjoy traditional Andalucian cuisine next to the sea, always with the high level of Finca Cortesín quality and service.

This is a grand deluxe hotel and obviously it’s not going to be cheap.

Do you have a good occupancy rates? Is there sufficient demand for a hotel of this category?

Since the inauguration in March 2009 – this is our third season – we have been very satisfied because, fortunately, each year we exceed our expectations of occupancy and profitability.

Personally, I don’t believe it’s an expensive hotel. You could even say the rates are low considering the quality we offer. Everyone knows that at Finca Cortesín we have set the goal of being one of the major hotels in Europe, and we are achieving that. To that end, we have invested in infrastructure, in human resources, in training, etc.

We are working hard to provide the best to our clients, and I don’t believe anyone leaves thinking they’ve paid more than they’ve received in return. Proof of that is in the fact that most clients return.

Hermanos Luis y Guillermo Navarro Gerentes de Aloha y San Roque Golf Texto: Antonio Sánchez

Su iniciación en el golf tiene un origen familiar. Los Navarro eran socios del club malagueño El Candado y fue allí donde les picó este gusanillo que ya no les abandonaría nunca.

Luis y Guillermo (Willy), Guillermo y Luis; podría decirse de ellos casi como de los Reyes Católicos: tanto monta, monta tanto, porque, siempre unidos, ninguno de ellos destaca o lo pretende sobre el otro.

Juntos forman un fenómeno singular en la Costa del Sol, el de dos hermanos dirigiendo dos club de golf de elite, San Roque Club y Aloha.

Ambos campos han acogido pruebas del Tour Europeo y los dos se encuentran entre los mejores que tenemos en Andalucía.

No es habitual, no, que se de una situación así ni aquí ni en ninguna otra parte, por eso hemos querido reunirlos en Andalucía Golf en una entrevista distendida y relajada que en ocasiones se volvía seria.

Y lo mejor de estos dos es que se llevan "como hermanos", que con frecuencia es mucho decir...

"Efectivamente todo empezó en El Candado remarca Luis- un club maravilloso difícilmente repetible porque allí había un nivel de servicios que en España ya no se podrá recuperar nunca. Practicábamos vela, tenis, golf, etc., aquello era el paraíso. Fuimos muy afortunados de haber crecido en ese entorno."

–El golf os marcó pero luego vuestras profesiones fueron por otro lado...

Guillermo: –Sí, yo hice económicas y luego me fui a Madrid a trabajar. Por entonces mi "hermano mayor"- lo recalca para que quede claro quien es el más joven- ya se había iniciado en el mundo del golf y me animaba a que lo hiciese yo también.

El primer campo donde empecé como director fue en Granada, donde participé en su construcción desde el principio, lo que es una expe36

riencia muy educativa.

Luis: –Yo hice agrónomos, por tradición familiar, y siempre me interesó el mundo del golf y todo lo relacionado con él . En el 94 hice un curso de mantenimiento de campos y unos años después me surgió la oportunidad de incorporarme a Alicante Golf como green keeper. Dejé un trabajo estupendo como responsable de adquisiciones en Málaga del proyecto de Siemens para Amena y me lié la manta a la cabeza. En Alicante Golf estuve varios años mas ya como gerente. De ahí pasé al El Bosque, por muy poco tiempo porque me llamaron de Aloha.

Buscaban un gerente con un perfil como el mío y Don Ángel de la Riva tuvo a bien hablarle de mi a Richard Katz, presidente de Aloha entonces. Así es como me vine hace siete años y vivo muy feliz aquí.

–¿Conocéis alguna otra pareja de hermanos que dirijan campos de tan alto nivel como los vuestros"..

–Ni tan alto ni tan bajo -apunta Guillermo. Mira que viajo con frecuencia por Europa y otras partes del mundo, pero nunca, nunca me he encontrado

Luis and Guillermo (Willy), Guillermo and Luis: you could almost say of them the same as the Catholic Monarchs’ motto… it amounts so, so it amounts (tanto monta, monta tanto), because – always united, neither shines over or wants to shine over the other.

Together, they make a unique tandem on the Costa del Sol: two brothers running elite golf clubs, San Roque and Aloha.

Both courses have hosted European Tour events, and both are considered among the best in Andalucía.

It is not common for this situation to arise – neither here nor elsewhere – which is why Andalucía Golf was keen to bring them together in a relaxed and informal interview that, on occasions, did also slip into seriousness. The best thing about the pair is that they do truly interact “like brothers”, which often is a lot to say…

“In fact everything did begin at El Candado,” re-

calls Luis, “a magnificent club difficult to replicate because there was a level of services there that in Spain you would not be able to recoup ever. We went sailing, played tennis and golf, etc. – it was paradise. We were very fortunate to have been raised in that environment.”

Golf had a significant influence on you but later you moved in different professional directions…

Guillermo: - Yes, I studied economics and then moved to Madrid for work. At the time my “big brother” – he stresses this so it becomes clear who is younger – had already begun working in the world of golf and he encouraged me to do the same.

The first course where I started as manager was in Granada, where I was involved in the construction of a golf course right from the start, which is a very educative experience.

Luis: - I studied agronomy, by family tradition, and I was always interested in the world of golf and

everything related to it. In 1994, I did a course maintenance course and a few years later I had the opportunity of joining Alicante Golf as greenkeeper. I left a great job as head of acquisitions in Málaga – Siemens’ project for Amena – and put all my eggs in the one basket. I spent several more years at Alicante Golf as manager. From there I moved to El Bosque, not for very long because then Aloha called.

They were looking for a manager with my profile and Don Ángel de la Riva (president of the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation) kindly spoke about me Richard Katz, at the time president of Aloha.

So that’s how I came back seven years ago and I’m very happy here.

- Are you aware of any other brothers running such top-level golf courses as yours?

- Neither top-level or low-level, says Guillermo. Look, I travel quite a lot around Europe and other parts of the world but never, never, have I found a

un caso así, e investigo ¡eh!, porque siento curiosidad.

–¿Cual de los dos campos es el mejor?- pregunto para picar un poco.

–Hombre...dice Luis irónico, sin duda San Roque...Puede que Aloha -apostilla Guillermo más irónico aun.

–¿Y el mejor director de los dos?

–No sabría decirte -vuelve a intervenir Luis con ironía.

–Somos diferentes perfiles -dice Guillermo un poco más serio- porque mi hermano seguro que sabe más de mantenimiento porque es ingeniero agrónomo, mientras que yo en San Roque, aunque tenemos un campo de socios, gestiono también un campo comercial, y en ese aspecto a lo mejor estoy un poco más por delante.

-Perfiles diferentes de gerencia y campos muy diferentes también...

–Sí, es posible -dice Luis- aunque los dos contamos con muy buenos productos que sabemos y procuramos cuidar y potenciar.

Mi filosofía en esto, y aquí se ve mi vena agronómica, es que las siembras generan cosechas. Es decir, si cuidas las bases tendrás resultados. También pienso -fíjate que tontería, añade sonriendoque lo más importante de un campo de golf es el campo. En este sector la única manera de diferenciarse es por la calidad, así que si cuidamos lo esencial, todo lo demás consiste en hacer cosas sensatas.

Hay muchos sitios -no es el caso de San Roquedonde al campo se le da una importancia secundaria, y debería ser al contrario... Luego cómo se organice, cómo se comercialice, ese es otro tema.

Si el producto es malo no hay posibilidad de que eso prospere.

Tanto nosotros como San Roque nos preocupamos de que el producto sea cada vez mejor: calidad y servicios son la clave de todo.

–Juntos casi, casi podrían hacer un lobby, un equipo imbatible...

–Seríamos muy complementarios -sigue Luis. Guillermo tiene más visión comercial y posiblemente económica y mi especialidad quizá sea otra.

Nos compenetramos perfectamente -interviene Guillermo- y nos ayudamos mutuamente. Ante alguna duda, algún problema yo le consulto a mi hermano, y cuando tengo alguna idea también se la comento.

de "resolver problemas y parir ideas"...y eso que estamos un poco alejados , si estuviésemos más cerca podríamos poner en práctica iniciativas que creemos mejorarían la gestión. Ideas que solo se pueden llevar a cabo con un alto grado de confianza... Y con mi hermano la tengo, je, je.

–¿Hablamos de crisis o lo dejamos?

–Desde luego en Aloha (Luis) la crisis nos ha tocado muy de refilón, porque somos un club de socios y nuestros socios no están dispuestos a sacrificar su pasión y lo que los mantiene vivos y activos. Vivimos en esto un poco al margen.

A mí me está afectando un poco más –apunta Guillermo– porque, aunque tengo mis socios, también tengo un segundo campo comercial.

De todas formas -sigue- pienso que la crisis ha servido para que los clubes se dimensionen adecuadamente y no haya despilfarro económico y poca coherencia a la hora de gestionarlos.

En cuanto vuelvan los "números", como parece

My philosophy on this matter, and here you’ll see my agronomic vein, is that seeds generate harvests. That is to say that, if you look after the basics, you will have results. I also believe – look how silly this is, he laughs – that the most important thing about a golf course is the course. In this industry the only way to stand out is by offering quality, so if we look after the key aspects everything else involves doing sensible things.

There are a lot of places – this is not the case with San Roque – where the course is of secondary importance, and it should be the opposite. Then, how you organise and market it, that’s another matter. If the product is bad there is no way it will prosper.

Both us and San Roque make an effort to ensure the product keeps improving: quality and services are the key to everything.

–¿Sois optimistas?

–Totalmente, totalmente -interviene Luis. Como dice Guillermo esta crisis va a servir para que aprendamos de muchos errores del pasado.

Cuando pase, y pasará en cuanto recobremos la confianza y estemos dispuestos a invertir otra vez en calidad de vida, seremos más fuertes.

–¿Que habría que hacer para aumentar el flujo de visitantes, si es que necesitamos que esto ocurra?

–Sin duda -apunta Guillermo- tendríamos que dar servicio y calidad para diferenciarnos de otros destinos.

Y en estos momentos -apunta Luis- en los que todo se hace más cuesta arriba no deberíamos dejar de hacer promoción. Vuelvo a lo de la siembra: hay que seguir y seguir porque todo no está hecho, hay que consolidar el destino, formar a la gente...

–Al final nos hemos puesto serios. ¿En casa cuando os reunís, en navidad por ejemplo, no paráis de hablar de golf y turismo...?

–Pues la verdad es que si lo hacemos (Guillermo).

Nuestro trabajo solo lo puede entender otro gerente, y lo eres las 24 horas del día. Tener un hombro amigo, y hermano, con quien desahogarte es una gran cosa.

–¿Y en vuestras casas qué opinan de esto?

–Ya nos conocen, saben a lo que nos dedicamos y cual es nuestra pasión. Por otra parte, aunque en el colectivo de gerentes nos llevamos todos muy bien y compartimos experiencias, ideas, etc..

Siempre hacerlo con un hermano te da más sensación de confianza (Luis) .Y nos hace mejores a los dos -concluye Guillermo.

- We would complement each other very well, continues Luis. Guillermo has more commercial vision, and possibly economic, and my speciality is perhaps something else.

We complement each other perfectly, interrupts Guillermo, and we help each other mutually. When in doubt, or when there is a problem, I consult my brother, and when I have an idea I also mention it to him.

Rather than a lobby we could set up a consulting service, because when we’re together we don’t stop “resolving problems and coming up with ideas”… and that’s with us being a fair way away from each other. If we were closer we could put into place initiatives that we believe would improve management practices.

Ideas that can you can only see through to fruition with a high level of confidence… And with my brother I have that (laughs).

- Should we talk about the crisis or let it go?

- Certainly at Aloha (Luis) the crisis has affected us only slightly, because we are a members’ club and our members are not willing to give up their passion, and what keeps us alive and active. We are a little on the margin of all this.

It’s affecting me a little more, says Guillermo, because, even though I have my members, I also have a second commercial course. In any event, I believe that the crisis has enabled clubs to re-dimension themselves appropriately so there is no wastage of economic resources or lack of a coherent attitude in managing the situation. As for a return to the previous “figures”, as seems to be happening, we will be more efficient and competitive.

- Are you optimists?

- Completely, completely, says Luis. As Guillermo notes, the crisis will enable us to learn from many of our errors of the past. When it passes, and it will pass when we regain confidence and are prepared to invest once again in quality of life, we will be stronger.

- What needs to be done to boost the flow of visitors, if we in fact need that to happen?

- Without a doubt, says Guillermo, we have to provide service and quality to make us stand out from other destinations.

And in these moments, adds Luis, when everything is so tough we should not stop our promotion initiatives. Returning to the analogy of the seed: we have to carry on and on because everything isn’t done yet. We have to consolidate the destination, train people…

- In the end we’ve become serious. When you meet up at home, at Christmas time for example, do you never stop talking about golf and tourism?

- To be honest that’s what we do (Guillermo).

Our work can only be understood by another manager, and that’s what you are 24 hours a day. To have a friendly shoulder, and brother, with whom you can pour your heart out to and let off steam, that’s a great thing.

- And what do they think about all this at home?

- They know us now. They know what we do and what our passion is. On the other hand, even though among the group of managers we get on very well and share experiences, ideas, etc., with your brother it always gives you more of a sense of confidence (Luis).

And it makes us both better people, concludes Guillermo.

Sistema de Control TORO LYNX Riversa, la empresa pionera en España y a la vez más innovadora en todo lo referente a dotar a los campos de golf de sus infraestructuras básicas para el mantenimiento: riego, maquinaria, etc., presenta en nuestro país un nuevo y novedoso sistema de la firma Toro para controlar, mejorar, racionalizar y ahorrar el agua de riego de los campos de golf; se trata del SISTEMA DE CONTROL TORO LYNX. Se puede controlar de tal manera el riego que se puede echar solo el agua necesaria en cada zona del campo, en cada momento, y dependiendo de la climatología. Ya no veríamos, por ejemplo, aspersores funcionando bajo la lluvia.

Este sistema indica hasta los segundos que deben estar abiertos y cuándo".

"El sistema LYNX tiene en cuenta todos esos factores, y es muy fácilmente controlable. Es muy sencillo de manejar, muy intuitivo... El greenkeeper o responsable de riego del campo solo tiene que echar un vistazo por las mañanas para saber qué ha ocurrido, y rápidamente observar el gasto de agua, en qué zonas ha necesitado más o menos. colocar en cualquier campo sin necesidad de hacer una nueva instalación de riego. Se utiliza la existente, lo único que hay que cambiar es el sistema de control, y eso se hace en muy poco tiempo con reformas mínimas. En tres, cuatro días está instalado el LYNX".

"Y toda la operación es tan económica”, dice Lara, “que con el ahorro de agua en año y medio más o menos está amortizada. Tenemos un plan de financiación a cinco años para instalar este sistema de forma que lo que se paga anualmente es muy inferior al ahorro de agua".

“Desde que hemos introducido este nuevo sistema en España, a principios de año, lo hemos tenido en un campo en pruebas, Los Arqueros, que han quedado encantados. Se está montando también en la renovación del campo Los Lagos, en Mijas Golf, y estamos a punto de instalarlo en dos campos más de Madrid. El sistema está ya experimentado, por tanto, y con la garantía de calidad Toro".

Tras una par de horas de juego, llegando al hoyo 8, el desayuno de la mañana necesita un refuerzo y el jugador encarga desde el intercomunicador que se encuentra en el camino un sandwich vegetal con queso. Unos minutos más tarde, en el hoyo 9 llega su tentempié de la mano del personal del restaurante de la Casa Club.

Vuelve a salir el sol y sigue su jornada disfrutando de un campo en excelentes condiciones con vistas a la Sierra Bermeja en unas ocasiones y al mar en otras. Hoyo 18… ¡bola!

Termina satisfecho los 18 hoyos, entrega el buggy en el parking donde le espera el marshall para sacar brillo a sus palos e indicarle que puede limpiarse los zapatos si lo desea.

Halfway through the morning, when their stomach would appreciate something hot to counter the morning coolness, the marshal shows up again - this time exchanging towels for thermos flasks of hot chocolate. A steaming cup of chocolate gives them sufficient energy to carry on. Hole six…ball!

After a couple of hours’ play, on reaching hole eight, the morning breakfast needs some reinforcement and the player orders a vegetable sandwich with cheese via the intercom located along the way. Some minutes later, their snack is delivered to hole nine by staff from the clubhouse restaurant.

The sun comes out again and they continue their day enjoying a course in excellent condition with views towards Sierra Bermeja on some occasions and towards the sea on others. Hole 18…ball!

They end up satisfied with the 18 holes, return the buggy to the car park where the marshal is waiting to shine their clubs and tell them that their shoes can be cleaned if they wish.

They take a towel from the pro shop, and some minutes in the sauna followed by a shower in the changing rooms round off a perfect day… at Valle Romano Golf.

ÁNGEL DE LA RIVA Candidato a la Presidencia de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf Este verano se celebran elecciones a la Presidencia de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf. Ángel de la Riva, presidente de la entidad desde 1996, explica por qué concurre a esta convocatoria y expone sus propuestas.

El pasado día 2 de abril se convocaron oficialmente las elecciones a la Asamblea General de la RFAG y, por tanto, a la Presidencia de la misma. Desde ese mismo momento, Ángel de la Riva dejó la Presidencia de la Federación Andaluza y comenzó a trabajar en su candidatura para la reelección. Según él mismo afirma a todo aquel que le pregunta sobre el tema, sigue con las mismas ganas y fuerzas de siempre para trabajar cuatro años más por el golf andaluz y español.

Para demostrar esa ilusión y acercarse un poco más a los federados, en el mismo momento en que se convocaron las elecciones –y, por tanto, se inició la campaña electoral– se abrió el blog de esta candidatura, al que se puede acceder en esta dirección: www.angeldelarivarfag2012.com Los valores que lo guiarán en este proceso electoral y en la próxima legislatura –“de salir reelegido”, afirma de la Riva–, son los mismos de siempre: deportividad, respeto, honestidad y amor al golf.

A continuación, se expone un resumen del programa y sus ideas principales, fruto del análisis de lo que se ha hecho y del trabajo de todo un equipo. Un equipo del que el hasta ahora presidente asegura sentirse más que orgulloso, por su entrega total y desinteresada al golf y por su gran calidad humana.

Se ha intentado elaborar, dice De la Riva, un proyecto “sólido y realista, coherente con el presupuesto del que se dispone, lleno de ilusión y lo más detallado y minucioso posible”.

Después de los días de campaña que llevamos, De la Riva afirma ser consciente de lo mucho que

se exige a esta candidatura en cuanto a realizar una gestión completamente transparente. En este punto, recalca que por supuesto se seguirá realizando: “Jamás hemos ocultado nada, pero nos esforzaremos por mejorar siempre todo lo posible.

Lo que sí es importante recordar a los federados es que sus representantes en la Asamblea, a quienes ellos han votado, son a quienes tienen que dirigirse para saber cómo va la Federación. Nos encantaría poder informar personalmente a cada uno de los federados, pero es algo, desgraciadamente, inviable”.

Jóvenes El pasado mes de marzo, la Real Federación Española de Golf presentó el Ranking de Federaciones Territoriales, en el que la Andaluza aparecía primera, por delante del resto de las demás autonómicas.

El objetivo principal en esta materia, por tanto, es continuar trabajando junto a padres, técnicos y campos para seguir formando buenos jugadores y -como Ángel de la Riva no se cansa de repetir- “sobre todo, grandes personas”.

Actualmente hay tres grandes proyectos en

marcha en los que esta candidatura tiene puestas muchas esperanzas y por los que trabajará sin descanso: “Golf en colegios”, que ya funciona en Jaén y se llevará al resto de provincias; la apertura de nuevos “Centros de Tecnificación” en aquellas zonas donde sean necesarios; y el “Centro de Alto Rendimiento” en La Cañada, un proyecto que esta candidatura promete apoyar y trabajar hasta verlo hecho realidad.

Comercial Afirma Ángel de la Riva que este equipo conoce las dificultades que atraviesan nuestros campos, especialmente los comerciales. Por eso, el primer punto a tratar es la revisión del sistema de módulos. Se mantendrán las subvenciones que se han concedido este año a los campos.

Otras propuestas destinadas a este comité son la revisión de los seguros por licencias temporales, y la oposición ante la RFEG a la subida del precio de la licencia anual.

Se está trabajando además en un programa de gestión de reservas gratuito para los campos de golf federados, que se pondría en marcha lo antes posible de salir elegidos. Senior Entre las propuestas dirigidas al colectivo senior destaca el conseguir green fees especiales en días laborables y horarios predeterminados en aquellos campos andaluces que quieran acogerse a la propuesta. Ya se ofrecen precios especiales en alojamiento y manutención, pero este sería un nuevo paso para ofrecer los mejores precios a los jugadores.

Se quiere, además, establecer barras doradas en los campos andaluces y, previa autorización médica, el uso del cochecito para circular en los campos que quieran acogerse a esta propuesta.

Afirma Ángel de la Riva que siempre se trabajará en colaboración con la Asociación de Seniors de Golf de Andalucía. té, esta candidatura afirma tener muchas esperanzas puestas en el equipo Neo-Pro de Andalucía.

guirán atendiendo todas, como hasta ahora se ha hecho, adaptándose al presupuesto disponible.

NOTICIAS DE LA REAL FEDERACION Copa de Andalucía Víctor Pastor gana el torneo, Leonardo Lilja queda segundo y Carlos Leandro se impone en categoría cadete El cordobés Víctor Pastor se ha proclamado campeón de la Copa de Andalucía 2012, disputada durante cuatro jornadas en las magníficas instalaciones del Club de Golf La Cañada.

Con este título, el joven andaluz logra su triunfo más importante a nivel amateur y sucede en el palmarés de la competición a Juan Francisco Sarasti, vencedor el pasado año en Sanlúcar Club de Campo.

La brillante victoria del hermano menor de Marcos Pastor se cimentó desde la primera jornada gracias a una espectacular tarjeta de 68 (3 bajo par) golpes que lo situaban provisionalmente segundo, a un sólo golpe del asturiano Alberto Fernández López.

Ya tras los segundos 18 hoyos, Víctor Pastor se colocó líder, rubricando otra ronda bajo par (69 golpes) y acumulando una renta de 2 golpes sobre el catalán Carlos Pigem Xammar.

La tercera jornada concluyó de nuevo con Víctor Pastor en lo más alto de la clasificación y con un resultado bajo par (69 golpes). En segunda

Campeonato de España Juvenil El gaditano Mario Galiano se alza con el subcampeonato, a tres golpes del ganador, el vasco John Rahm Mario Galiano ha conquistado el segundo puesto, igualado a golpes con Antonio Ferrer, en el Campeonato de España Individual Junior y Boy 2012 disputado en el recorrido murciano de Hacienda del Álamo. El joven golfista de Guadiaro, Cádiz, finalizó con un acumulado de 286 golpes y se quedó a 3 golpes del vencedor, el jugador vasco John Rahm.

La participación de Mario Galiano en esta competición ha ido de menos a más con el transcurso de los días. De hecho, las dos primeras jornadas, el jugador gaditano firmó unos registros de 73 y 75 golpes para situarse en el puesto decimoquinto de la clasificación provisional, a 8 golpes de la cabeza. Ya el tercer día, Mario Galiano comenzó su particular remontada y con una espectacular ronda de 68 golpes (4 bajo par), ascendía hasta la cuarta plaza.

En cuanto a los últimos 18 hoyos, Mario Galiano mantuvo el excelente nivel de juego mostrado en la jornada anterior, rubricando una vuelta de 70 golpes (-2) que le permitió alcanzar un sub-

campeonato con sabor a victoria para el extraordinario golfista guadiareño.

Otros jugadores andaluces con una actuación destacada en tierras murcianas fueron Víctor Pastor, octavo clasificado y reciente campeón de la Copa Andalucía celebrada en el Club de Golf La Cañada, y Borja Cabello Giacalone, quien también finalizó entre los diez primeros de este Campeonato de España Junior y Boy 2012.

Ana Peláez Triviño se ha adjudicado el Campeonato de España Femenino de Pitch & Putt celebrado durante dos jornadas en el recorrido madrileño de Colmenar Club de Golf.

La jugadora con licencia federativa por el SIGA Sotogrande certificó el título nacional tras superar en un play off de desempate a la canaria Lucía Cortezo y a la madrileña Claudia Galindo, con quienes finalizó igualada a 108 golpes.

En la primera jornada, Ana Peláez rubricó una vuelta de 56 golpes que la situaban a 4 golpes de la cabeza. Tras estos primeros 18 hoyos la posibilidad de lograr la victoria final se antojaba muy difícil, sin embargo, el segundo día Ana Peláez sacó a relucir su mejor golf y con una vuelta de 52 golpes forzó un play off de desempate del que finalmente saldría triunfadora.

Ana Peláez que en 2008 ganó el Campeonato de España Benjamín de Pitch & Putt, es una jugadora habitual de esta modalidad de golf. De hecho, en la última prueba del Circuito Andaluz de Pitch & Putt, disputada en Greenlife Golf, la jugadora malagueña conquistó un nuevo éxito para su palmarés con una ronda de 56 golpes.

Con la brillante victoria de Ana Peláez, el golf amateur andaluz escribe un nuevo capítulo en su extensa nómina de títulos dentro de esta variedad de golf. Así, entre los últimos logros de nuestros jugadores destacan algunos como los dos triunfos (ediciones 2010 y 2011) de Marcos Pastor en el Campeonato de España Masculino, los dobletes de Isabel Bascuas y Ángel Hidalgo en los Campeonatos de España Infantil y Alevín (2009 y 2010), el triunfo de Vicente Serrano en el Open Ibérico 2011 o el primer puesto de Tatiana Morató en el Campeonato de España Femenino 2010.

ANDALUZA DE GOLF Programa Neo Pro 2012 para jóvenes golfistas La Real Federación Andaluza de Golf y Reale Seguros presentaron esta iniciativa, que beneficiará con 10.000 euros anuales a cada uno de los cinco golfistas seleccionados Por segundo año consecutivo, la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf y la empresa de seguros Reale han rubricado un convenio de colaboración para la puesta en marcha del Programa de Ayudas y Subvenciones a los jóvenes profesionales de Andalucía.

El listado de golfistas seleccionados lo integran Jaime Camargo Yravedra, Patrick Simard Bascuñán, Gervasio Cuquejo Merchán y Gonzalo Vicente Elena. Todos ellos, han sido elegidos por ser los cuatro primeros jugadores clasificados en la Orden de Mérito al 31 de diciembre de 2011.

Completa la nómina de profesionales distinguidos, Gonzalo Gancedo Onieva, designado por Rele Seguros, empresa patrocinadora del programa Neo Pro 2012.

Entre los requisitos establecidos para poder optar a la concesión de estas ayudas figuraban algunos como estar en posesión de la licencia por Andalucía o residir en nuestra Comunidad Autónoma desde hace tres años, no tener más de 28 años, no formar parte del Programa Neo de la Real Federación Española de Golf o no contar con patrocinador ni haber recibido ayudas oficiales.

Tras la presentación de este acuerdo, la Real Fe-

deración Andaluza de Golf subvencionará a cada profesional con la cantidad de 10.000 euros, divididos en 4 pagos trimestrales. Además, la RFGA

les proporcionará material deportivo y gestionará una serie de invitaciones para que participen en torneos y circuitos mayores.

Socio de Honor Reconocimiento del Club La Cañada a Ángel de la Riva El Club de Golf La Cañada ha rendido un emotivo homenaje a Ángel de la Riva, Presidente de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf, nombrándolo Socio de Honor del Club. La Junta Directiva del club guadiareño, acordó por unanimidad en sesión extraordinaria, conceder a De la Riva la máxima distinción de la entidad “por su extraordinaria trayectoria golfística y apoyo incondicional al Club de Golf La Cañada”.

Este acto, según palabras del Presidente de La Cañada, Ángel Gutiérrez, “se lo debíamos a uno de los grandes impulsores en la creación y proyección de nuestro club”. Asimismo, Gutiérrez señaló “Ángel de la Riva se merece este homenaje y mucho más por todo lo que nos ha dado a La Cañada, y siempre sin pedir nada a cambio. Él nos marcó el camino a seguir y eso es algo por lo que siempre le estaremos agradecidos”, concluyó.

La ceremonia también contó con la parti-

cipación del Presidente de la Real Federación Española de Golf, Gonzaga Escauriaza, quien reconoció la gran labor de su homólogo en la RFGA. “El golf en Andalucía no se

Sea creativo alrededor del green Durante el Volvo World Match Play Championship 2012, los jugadores se enfrentaran a los difíciles Run Outs desde donde el principal objetivo es evitar números altos. Este complicado golpe será analizado con mucho cuidado por los jugadores antes de tomar una decisión. Usted se dará cuenta de que no todos juegan el mismo tipo de golpe.

Cuando nos enfrentamos a este tipo de golpe, lo primero que debe hacer es preguntarse qué palo me permitirá dejar la bola cerca del hoyo. Si la bola está hundida o en una chuleta, considere utilizar la madera o el híbrido. Si el lie de la bola es bueno, el putt o el chip (h5) es la opción correcta. Si la bola está muy bien colocada, entonces es cuando podemos considerar el wedge.

JAVIER REVIRIEGO “Seguiremos haciendo mejoras para mantener a Valderrama entre los mejores campos y clubes del mundo” Pocos campos de golf en el mundo tienen un curriculum como el de Valderrama, merecedor de los más encendidos elogios por parte de los mejores jugadores del planeta, que han disfrutado –y sufrido en algunos casos– el enorme reto que supone enfrentarse al extraordinario, en todos los sentidos, recorrido de este magnífico club gaditano.

Escenario, en 1997, de la histórica primera Ryder Cup que se disputaba en suelo continental europeo, sede de los dos únicos torneos de las series Campeonatos del Mundo jugados en España, que se saldaron con la memorable victoria de Tiger Woods sobre Miguel Ángel Jiménez, y de Mike Weir, campo de batalla de dieciséis Volvo Masters, del Andalucía Masters y de otras competiciones de prestigio, Valderrama es –¿alguién lo duda?– un club de golf excepcional.

Su director general, Javier Reviriego, se muestra orgulloso de que este campo ocupe desde hace mucho tiempo lugares de privilegio en los principales rankings mundiales, algo que tanto los socios como los visitantes del club valoran muy positivamente.

–Antes de nada, ¿cómo han transcurrido estos primeros meses dirigiendo Valderrama?

–Han sido unos meses muy intensos. He tenido mucho trabajo ya que he optado por hacer todos los cambios que consideraba necesarios desde el principio. La verdad es que ahora empiezo a tener la sensación de que tengo todo más o menos controlado, aunque seguimos haciendo mejoras en muchos aspectos del club.

–Imagino que no es fácil implementar cambios en un club con tantos años de rodaje...

–No es fácil, en estos procesos la clave siempre está en el personal. Hemos cambiado mucho la dinámica de trabajo y al principio no fue nada fácil para el staff. Ahora puedo decir que están trabajando muy bien y como un verda60

dero equipo. Tanto el campo como el servicio en la casa-club han mejorado mucho y seguimos trabajando duro para subir el nivel y continuar siendo referencia como club.

–¿Cómo está el tema del Andalucía Masters para este año?

–Ya hemos tenido conversaciones con la Consejería de Turismo y Deporte y saben que estamos encantados de acoger el torneo. El año pasado vivimos un torneo espectacular con un gran Sergio García, y estoy seguro de que este año se puede volver repetir. Espero que en las próximas semanas haya novedades sobre el torneo.

–Hace pocos días se publicó el prestigioso Ranking de Golf Digest USA con los mejores campos del mundo. ¿Están contentos en el club con la posición que ocupa Valderrama?

–Yo tengo un gran respeto por el Ranking de Golf Digest. Se publica desde los años 60 y tiene un grupo de panelistas de primer nivel. Creo que es sin duda el ranking más autorizado de los tres que existen y que hay que tener muy en cuenta la valoración que hacen de cada campo. Dicho esto, nosotros nos hemos llevado una agradable sorpresa al ver que hemos ascendido al puesto 40 del mundo (estábamos en el puesto 53 anteriormente); sin duda es un gran honor estar tan arriba y ser el único campo de España que está incluido entre los 100 primeros.

–¿A qué atribuye este ascenso?

–A diferencia de otros rankings, Golf Digest nunca te informa cuando un panelista va a visitar

General manager Javier Reviriego is proud that the course has, for quite some time now, maintained a privileged place in the main international rankings, something members and visitors alike value very positively.

- First of all, how have the first few months been managing Valderrama?

- They have been very intensive months. I’ve had a lot of work to do because I decided to make all the changes I believed were necessary right from the start. The truth is that now I’m starting to feel I have everything more or less under control, though we are still carrying out improvements in many areas of the club.

- We imagine it is not easy to implement changes at a club with so many years behind it…

- It’s not easy. During these processes the key is always in the staff. We’ve changed the work dynamic quite a lot and at first it wasn’t all that easy for the staff. Now I can say that they’re working very well, and like a true team. Both the course Andalucía Golf / España Golf

el campo. Es difícil saber los parámetros que han considerado, ya que no tienes la oportunidad de sentarte con las personas que evalúan el campo. A mí esto me parece perfecto, ya que dota al ranking de gran credibilidad. Imagino que el altísimo nivel de mantenimiento sigue siendo un factor importantísimo en la evaluación de Valderrama. También estoy seguro de que han influido las mejoras en el diseño que hizo Kyle Philips y las mejoras en la atención al cliente que hemos introducido. Al final, lo que se valora en estos rankings es la experiencia total de jugar en el campo y es por ello que no hay que descuidar nada en absoluto.

–¿Cuáles son los otros rankings que considera de prestigio?

–El de Golf Magazine también tiene gran prestigio y un sistema de evaluación similar al de Golf Digest. También me parece muy bueno el de Golf Monthly. Esta revista publica cada dos años un ranking de los mejores campos de Europa Continental. Hemos tenido la fortuna de liderar el ranking de campos de Europa continental durante muchos años, y en estos momentos seguimos siendo el número uno.

–¿Cree que este tipo de clasificaciones influyen realmente en los clientes?

–Ésta es una muy buena pregunta. Yo pienso que hay muchos clientes, principalmente los norteamericanos, que dan mucha importancia a este tipo de rankings. Por otro lado, considero que siempre es mejor estar arriba que no estarlo pero tampoco es un factor decisivo en el éxito o fracaso del campo.

Hay que tomar este tipo de rankings como una herramienta más de marketing pero al mismo tiempo hacer autocrítica cuando se publican ya que pueden ser el fiel reflejo de lo que muchos clientes piensan de tu campo y club.

Para un club como el nuestro es un orgullo estar entre los mejores campos del mundo, pero al mismo tiempo no estamos obsesionados por aparecer y ascender. Es un gran reconocimiento al trabajo de todo el staff y así intenta-

mos trasladarlo. Lo que puedo asegurar es que no caeremos en la tentación de promocionar nuestra marca presumiendo de nuestra posición en los rankings de campos. Considero que los clientes son muy inteligentes y que el mercado siempre te pone en su sitio.

–¿Qué quiere decir con que el “mercado te pone en su sitio”?

–Quiero decir que al final del día todos los campos quieren vender green fees al mayor precio posible, pero es el cliente y en consecuencia el mercado el que te dice si lo que estás cobrando está en valor. Para nosotros, por ejemplo, el hecho de cobrar 300 euros por green fee supone que tenemos que estar siempre a la altura, ya que sabemos que no podemos fallar en ningún aspecto de la experiencia si queremos fidelizar a estos clientes. En resumen, los rankings pueden ayudarte a atraer nuevos clientes y a mejorar tu imagen, pero en ningún caso te garantizan el éxito. Hoy en día los clientes pueden elegir y comparar con muchísima facilidad; incluso pueden publicar su experiencia en Internet y que muchos posibles clientes lo lean.

–Por último, ¿cómo valoran los socios de Valderrama el nuevo puesto en el ranking de Golf Digest USA? –Nuestros socios están muy orgullosos de ser el mejor campo de Europa continental y uno de los mejores del mundo. Siempre ha sido motivo de orgullo; somos un campo privado y exclusivo sin pretensiones comerciales pero están encantados de que la industria del golf valore la calidad de Valderrama.

También saben que debemos seguir trabajando y mejorando para mantener esta posición de privilegio.

- What about the issue of the Andalucía Masters this year?

- We’ve already held conversations with the Ministry of Tourism and Sport and we know they are delighted to hold the tournament. Last year we had a spectacular tournament, with a magnificent Sergio García, and I’m sure that this year the same will be the case. I hope over the next few weeks there will be some news about the tournament.

- Recently the prestigious Golf Digest USA Ranking was published, naming the best golf courses in the world. Are people in the club happy about Valderrama’s position?

- I have a lot of respect for the Golf Digest Ranking. It’s been published since the 1960s and has a first-class judging panel. I believe it is, without a doubt, the most authoritative of the three that exist, and the valuation it makes of each course should be taken very much into account. Having said that, it has been a pleasant surprise for us to note that we have risen to 40th place in the world (we were 53rd before); without a doubt, it is a great honour to be so high and to be the only course in Spain among the top 100.

- What do you attribute this rise to?

- Unlike other rankings, Golf Digest never let you know when a panellist is visiting the course. It’s difficult to know the parameters they are considering, as you don’t have the opportunity to sit down with those carrying out the evaluation. I think that’s perfect, as it gives the ranking more credibility. I would imagine that the high level of maintenance remains an important fac-

tor in Valderrama’s valuation. I’m also sure that the design improvements made

by Kyle Philips have had an influence, as well as the improvements we have introduced in client service. In the end, what they evaluate with these rankings is the overall experience of playing at a course, so you can’t overlook any area at all.

- What are the other rankings you consider to be prestigious?

- The Golf Magazine ranking is also quite prestigious, and has a similar evaluation system to the one used by Golf Digest. I also think the Golf Monthly ranking is a very good one. The latter publishes a ranking every two years of the best courses in Continental Europe. We’ve had the good fortune to head the ranking of continental Europe golf courses for many years, and at the moment we remain number one.

- Do you believe these kinds of rankings have a real influence with clients?

- That’s a very good question. I believe there are a lot of clients, mainly the North Americans, who place a lot of importance on these kinds of rankings.

On the other hand, I believe it’s always best to be high in the rankings than not to be, though it’s not necessarily a decisive factor in the success or failure of a course. You have to look at these kinds of rankings as one more marketing tool, while at the same time being self-critical when they are published as they could represent a true reflection of what many clients think about your course and club.

For a club such as ours, it is a matter of pride to be rated among the best courses in the world, but at the same time we are not obsessed about ap-

pearing and rising in the rankings. It’s a great recognition of the work of all the staff, and that’s how we try to look at it. What I can assure you is that we don’t slip into the temptation of promoting our brand by boasting about our position in the golf course rankings. I believe clients are very intelligent and the market always puts you in your place.

- What do you mean by “the market always puts you in your place”?

- I mean to say that at the end of the day all courses want to sell green fees for the highest price possible, but it’s the client – and consequently the market – that tells you if what you are charging is worth it. For us, for example, the fact we charge €300 for a green fee means we always have to be at the top of our game, as we know we can’t fail in any aspects of the experience if we want these clients to remain loyal. In short, the rankings can help you attract new clients and improve your image but in no way do they guarantee success. These days clients can choose and compare very easily; they can even publish their experience on the internet, and many potential clients will read what they write.

- Finally, how do Valderrama’s club members value the new position in the Golf Digest USA Ranking?

- Our members are very proud to be ranked the best course in continental Europe and one of the best in the world. It’s always been a matter of pride; we are a private and exclusive club with no commercial pretensions but we are delighted that the golf industry values Valderrama’s quality. They also realise that we have to keep working hard and making improvements to ensure we maintain this privileged position.

Andrés Sánchez, su director: “Nuestra idea es siempre avanzar, estar en vanguardia y un paso por delante de otros campos de golf” Atalaya Golf & Country Golf, con sus dos campos de 18 hoyos, Old Course y New Course, es sin duda uno de los complejos más populares y representativos de la Costa del Sol. Ubicado entre Marbella y Estepona, a unos cientos de metros de la entrada por la carretera de Benahavís, ofrece este verano unos precios para jugar difícilmente superables.

Andrés Sánchez, director del resort, muestra un legítimo orgullo por estar al frente de un complejo golfístico que ha estado a la vanguadia en varios aspectos.

–¿Por qué considera a Atalaya un campo pionero?

–Somos pioneros en muchos aspectos; primero, por veteranos: nuestro Old Course es de la década de los sesenta, y segundo porque fuimos de los primeros en instalar los más modernos sistemas de marketing on line.

También hemos sido de los primeros en contar con un desfibrilador para cuyo uso hemos entrenado a nuestro personal. El marshal lleva uno portátil y tenemos otros en la casa club y en mantenimiento.

"También”, añade Andrés Sánchez, “hemos sido de los primeros en instalar el sistema QR para reservas".

"Nuestra idea -asegura- es siempre avanzar, estar en vanguardia y un paso por delante de otros campos de golf".

–A pesar de ser uno de los campos más antiguos de la Costa del Sol, siempre habéis innovado, incluso en mantenimiento...

–Sí, fuimos de los primeros en introducir la resiembra, y constantemente estamos recebando las calles. Este año vamos a introducir, después del verano, varios cambios importantes tanto en el campo viejo como en el nuevo.

–También van a hacer obras en la casa club...

–Vestuarios nuevos, duchas nuevas, una terraza nueva con vistas al hoyo 18 para poder acoger a unas 75 personas... En fin, tenemos muchos proyectos.

–¿Cómo prevé el verano?

–Espero que sea bastante interesante. Los tres primeros meses de este año han sido buenos, debido sobre todo al buen tiempo y al esfuerzo de comercialización que hemos hecho.

- Why is Atalaya considered a pioneering course?

- We are pioneers in many aspects: first, as veterans – our Old Course dates to the 1960s; and second because we were the first ones to install the most modern online marketing systems. We were also pioneers in having at our disposal a defibrillator, which we’ve trained our staff to use. The marshal has a portable one and we have another in the clubhouse and also in the maintenance area. We were also the first to install the QR system for bookings.

Our objective is to always move forward, to be in the vanguard and one step ahead of other golf courses.”

- Even though Atalaya is one of the oldest clubs on the course, you have always innovated, including in maintenance…

- Yes, we were the first to introduce re-seeding, and we are constantly re-planting the fairways. This year, after summer, we’re going to introduce several important changes on both the Old and the New course.

- You are also planning building work at the clubhouse…

- New changing rooms,, new showers, a new terrace with views over the 18th, and capacity for 75 people… In effect, we have quite a few projects on the drawing board.

- How do you see summer shaping up?

- I hope it will be fairly interesting. The first three months of this year have been good, mostly due to the good weather and our marketing efforts.

OLD COURSE First opened back in 1968, the Atalaya Old Course has featured various revamps, including the reseeding of fairways with Bermuda grass. This parkland course features wide fairways and fast elevated greens. Eucalyptus, olive and pine trees grow along all the fairways, giving pleasant shade in summer but meting out their own punishment for inaccurate shots. Because of its tee positions, the Atalaya Old Course is suitable for any kind of player.

If you happen to be an early riser and manage to tee off from the 10th hole before 9am, you will be well rewarded with a tasty cooked breakfast in the Swiss chalet clubhouse when coming in from the 18th. Practice facilities are excellent and include a 60-bay driving range, chipping green, putting green and bunker practice area.

NEW COURSE The views over the Mediterranean and the La Concha mountain are beautiful, but don’t get distracted. This is a challenging course, opened in 1992. It starts off deceptively, gently between the wide, flat fairways of the Atalaya Old Course, but things soon get more difficult as you head up into the foothills. The return leg wanders down among the fairways of the older course towards the chalet-style clubhouse. The Bermuda fairways are lined with wildflowers, gorse bushes and lakes.

And it is not just the players: we have also worked with some great coaches of the game such as the national squad coaches and other well known coaches such as Simon Holmes who uses Arcos Gardens for his winter base, coaching players like Joakim Heaggman. In fact all these great players and teams are already forming part of our heritage and black and white photos can been found throughout the clubhouse marking their place in our short history.”

GONZAGA ESCAURIAZA, presidente de la Federación Española de Golf, reconoce que la situación económica está haciendo que disminuya el número de licencias federativas en nuestro país "Desgraciadamente esta crisis está afectando también al número de licencias”, reconoce Gonzaga Escauriaza, presidente de la Federación Española de Golf. “Hay gente”, añade, “que se está dando de baja, quizá los que jugaban poco o los que se han ido haciendo mayor, que conservaban aun la licencia y se han planteado dejarlo ahora para no tener que seguir pagando. Estamos, como todos, sufriendo un situación que esperemos pase pronto".

Se muestra, pese a todo, moderadamente optimista sobre el futuro a medio plazo de la salud de nuestro golf. Sin duda influido por el espléndido día que hacía en Marbella cuando hablamos con él durante el fin de semana del Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol. –De todas formas, que la gente se de de baja por tan poco dinero demuestra que el golf es cada vez más un deporte popular, no solo accesible a gente que no les preocupa su economía...

–Contamos con más de trescientas veinte mil licencias, lo que quiere decir que el golf es "popularísimo", diría yo. Depende de las comunidades autónomas, pero este deporte está entre el tercero o cuarto de España en número de federados.

–¿Cómo va esa iniciativa de sacar el golf a la calle?

–Bien. Se interesó mucha gente, y removió y empujó a los clubes a hacer cosas; a las federaciones territoriales también. Algunos ayuntamientos se interesaron en ofrecernos terrenos para hacer algo. Y todo

–¿Cuál es para usted el principal problema del golf español?

–Además de la crisis dichosa, tenemos los mismos inconvenientes que tiene el golf en el resto del mundo, que son el tiempo que se necesita de media para practicar este deporte, y el dinero que se necesita para hacer cualquier instalación.

Aunque el echo que se tarden casi cinco horas en un recorrido favorece, por otra parte, la incorporación cada vez más de los seniors, que disponen de mucho tiempo libre cuando se jubilan.

–El patrocinio de torneos cada vez está más difícil ¿Que opina que en Andalucía se hagan cuatro del Tour Europeo?

–Es absolutamente increíble. Andalucía se ha convertido en la meca del golf en España. Creo que la inversión en este deporte es un acierto que hay que seguir manteniendo porque el retorno es mucho.

–¿Quizá habría que plantearse hacer torneos más baratos, no solo aquí, si no en todas partes?

–Esto podría servir si en Asia, que es donde está el dinero, no pusiesen el listón tan alto. Si Asia entrase en el juego efectivamente se podrían hacer torneos más asequibles y, por tanto, posibilidades de hacer más. Pero en oriente tiran más hacia arriba que hacia abajo.

He is, in spite of everything however, moderately optimistic about the medium-term future of Spanish golf, no doubt influenced by the superb day we were enjoying in Marbella when we spoke to him, during the weekend of the Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol. - In any event, the fact that people are leaving the federation over such small amounts of money shows that golf is becoming more of a popular sport for the masses, not only accessible to those who aren’t worried about their finances…

- We have more than 320,000 registered golfers, which means golf is extremely popular, I would say. It depends on the particular region but the sport is either third or fourth in Spain in the number of officially registered participants.

- How is progress with the initiative to take golf out into the streets?

- Good… A lot of people are showing interest and it moves and encourages clubs to do things, as well as the regional federations. Some town halls are interested in providing us with land to develop projects. And all of this, together with golf in the schools, we hope will lead to interesting results in the medium term.

- What is, in your opinion, the main problem with golf in Spain?

- As well as the dreaded crisis, we have the same

drawbacks as in the rest of the world: that is, the average time required to play the game and the funds needed to build amenities. Having said that, the fact that it can take five hours to play a round also means that more seniors are taking up the game, as they have a lot of free time when they retire.

- Finding sponsorship for tournaments is becoming increasingly difficult. What is your view of the fact that four European Tour events are held in Andalucía?

- It’s absolutely incredible. Andalucía has become the mecca of golf in Spain. I believe that investment in this sport is a good decision that should be maintained, because the returns are considerable.

- Perhaps consideration should be given to holding less expensive tournaments, not only here, but everywhere else?

- That might be feasible if in Asia, where the money is, they had not raised the bar so high. If Asia entered the game, yes, tournaments that are more accessible could be held – and there would even be the possibility of holding more. But in the East they are moving upwards rather than downwards.

EUGENIO REVIRIEGO

Próximo a su jubilación anticipada, Eugenio Reviriego tiene la intención de presentarse como candidato a la presidencia en las próximas elecciones de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf (RFAG), que se celebrarán este verano. Aunque es ingeniero industrial de profesión y master en energía nuclear en los Estados Unidos, Reviriego lleva 25 años dedicado al mundo del golf.

Fue director del Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande durante trece años y del club de Golf Victoria en el Algarve portugués durante otros dos años. “Antes de esto –dice–, ya había organizado durante cinco años cursos de golf e inglés para jóvenes españoles en Florida (EE.UU). Algunos de mis alumnos han llegado a ser buenos profesionales, como Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Carlos Balmaseda, Carlos García Simarro y otros”.

–¿Por qué ha decidido presentarse a la presidencia de la RFAG? –Principalmente porque conozco bien la misión y los objetivos de la Federación, es un trabajo que me entusiasma y me encantaría hacer, y porque me considero con la capacidad y la experiencia necesarias para desarrollarlo con éxito, mejorar su estructura organizativa, modernizar su organización y hacerla más transparente, pues en mi opinión está estancada en el tiempo y necesariamente exige un cambio. El golf me apasiona, me gusta mucho, y no solo desde el punto de vista del juego, también desde la gestión, el arbitraje, la construcción y mantenimiento y en general todo lo relacionado con este mundo. Siempre me he dedicado a la gestión, y como soy una persona muy organizada y activa, cuando me llegue la hora de jubilarme no podré estar sin hacer nada. ¿Y qué es lo que más me apetecería hacer?. Pues llegar a ser presidente de la RFAG, porque estoy seguro de que haría un buen trabajo, y considero que hay mucho por hacer.

–¿Es importante para usted el equipo con el que se presenta? Hábleme de él.

–Cuento con un equipo de primer nivel y conocedor del golf andaluz, personas muy capaces, conocedoras de los problemas del golf andaluz y dis72

puestas a ofrecer su tiempo y su experiencia de manera desinteresada, y que por razones obvias prefiero no dar sus nombres en estos momentos.

Sé que contaré con los mejores para cada comité, para cada puesto, pero como hay tres candidaturas, no deseo comprometer a nadie y esperar a los resultados de las elecciones. Como en cualquier otra elección, se elige un presidente y éste nombra a su equipo. Lo tengo muy pensado y es, por supuesto, muy competente.

–¿Aunque hay tres candidaturas, puedo suponer que su mayor rival es el actual presidente Ángel de la Riva?

–No necesariamente, yo no descarto a ningún candidato que se presente. Cada uno ofrecemos nuestras propuestas y al final son los federados quienes decidirán, e ignoro los apoyos que tendrá realmente cada uno. Por supuesto los tres candidatos tenemos contactos y gente que dicen que nos apoyarán, lo que ocurre es que en esta ocasión al haber más de un candidato, a la hora de

unas elecciones nunca se sabe qué resultado saldrá hasta que no se celebren. Las votaciones serán libres y secretas, y algunos que te anuncian su intención de votarte, luego quizás no lo hagan, por eso yo no descarto a nadie y prefiero esperar.

–Si gana las elecciones, ¿cambiarán mucho las cosas?, ¿tendrían que temerle en determinados ambientes?

–Todos los posibles cambios, serían previamente estudiados y consensuados. Lo del temor es una pregunta que me han hecho en mi blog, pero la verdad es que en toda mi carrera profesional no he tenido problemas en este sentido ni nada por el estilo. Un empleado de la Federación, que lógicamente no se identificó, me decía que había una cierta preocupación entre los trabajadores, ¿qué pasaría con ellos si consigo ganar?. Les he contestado que deben estar tranquilos, que lo primero que tienen que hacer es no decantarse por ningún

candidato, ser neutrales y hacer su trabajo.

Y si yo llegara a entrar, no lo haré como un elefante en una cacharrería. Voy a estudiar durante un tiempo el trabajo asignado a cada empleado, determinar qué es lo que hace cada uno, y si se están aprovechando al máximo sus conocimientos. Si cumplen, son buenos profesionales y hacen su trabajo correctamente, no tienen nada que temer. Evidentemente habrá que revisar las funciones que realizan y la manera de optimizarlas.

–¿Cree que cuenta con muchos apoyos?

–Por la cantidad de manifestaciones de apoyo que estoy recibiendo percibo que sí.

Pero como le he dicho antes, al final nunca sabes, porque el voto es secreto y libre y pienso que cada uno votará en conciencia lo que crea que es mejor para el futuro de la Federación y para sus propios intereses.

Los que me conocen bien, saben cómo trabajo y me dan muchos ánimos. Hablo con presidentes de club y federados, y casi todos me dicen lo mismo: “creemos que hace falta un cambio pero no podemos comprometernos públicamente con ningún candidato”, “no queremos comprometer a nuestros socios y federados”, “conocemos a Ángel desde hace muchos años y a ti también”, “tenemos buenas relaciones con los dos”…, etc. Ahora bien, lo que sí concurren en su gran mayoría es en la necesidad de un cambio en el funcionamiento actual en la Federación y prometen que evaluarán lo que cada candidato ofrecemos y votarán secretamente en consecuencia. Y ahí es donde creo, que yo puedo aportar mucho, debido a mi experiencia y conocimiento del golf andaluz.

–¿Cuál sería el principal reproche, si es que tiene alguno, que le haría a la actual Junta Directiva?

– No es una cuestión de reproche, simplemente es una manera distinta de ver la Federación. Estoy seguro de que Ángel [de la Riva] ha dirigido la Federación lo mejor que ha podido y sabido durante todos estos años, pero pienso que las organizaciones necesitan renovarse con el tiempo, dar entrada a nuevas personas con nuevas ideas, adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos. Creo que cualquier organización puede sufrir un cierto grado de estancamiento cuando la presidencia no ha cambiado en 36 años. Ocurre igual en las empresas, el cambio

zación de carácter social sin ánimo de lucro que es, poder ofrecer servicios de carácter social captando entidades privadas que sean patrocinadores de la Federación (igual que la USGA Americana y otras).

Todas estas organizaciones tienen patrocinios del sector privado que contribuyen al fomento del golf. Por ejemplo: Creo que sería factible conseguir sponsors que patrocinaran un programa para llevar el golf a las clases más desfavorecidas, niños huérfanos, jóvenes con problemas, etc. ¿Podría destacar dos o tres puntos importantes de su programa?

–El primero que considero fundamental es el de la representatividad. Pido y deseo que la mayoría posible de entidades y federados vayan a votar.

Con esto se conseguiría una Asamblea plural, representativa y con capacidad de decidir como órgano supremo que es. El segundo sería hacer una

casi siempre es positivo y contribuye a dinamizar la gestión y sobre todo la estrategia. Conozco a Ángel desde hace muchos años, y antes de decidir presentarme tuvimos una larga y amigable charla.

Nos tenemos aprecio, sin embargo es lícito y también normal que cada uno veamos de forma diferente la manera de gestionar la RFAG. –En líneas generales, ¿qué clase de innovaciones le gustaría incluir desde la presidencia de la RFAG? Mi presidencia no sería ni personalista ni ejecutiva, aunque sí me aseguraría de que se gestionara adecuadamente y contara con el apoyo de la Asamblea General, que creo debería jugar un papel más destacado. Mi trabajo como presidente

sería en esencia de relaciones institucionales, de coordinar y tratar de unir esfuerzos y aglutinar a todas las entidades y colectivos que de alguna manera participan en el golf andaluz. Me gustaría crear un Comité de Sabios del golf que se reuniera periódicamente para tratar los asuntos de importancia relacionados con la industria del golf. En ese comité podrían estar la PGA de Andalucía, gerentes de campos, los principales tour-operadores, Patronatos de Turismo, etc., de tal manera que el golf andaluz se constituyera en un ente importante y de referencia en todo el mundo del golf. En la actualidad, lamentablemente, hay mucha disgregación. Creo también, que para ayudar a la financiación de la propia Federación y así, como organi-

gestión más moderna y eficaz, basada en la comunicación y en la transparencia. Hoy en día, con las nuevas tecnologías es muy sencillo mantener una comunicación rápida y efectiva. Por ejemplo, la comunicación mediante boletines periódicos a los federados es una manera sencilla de mantenerlos bien informados. Es importante que sepan en qué está trabajando la Federación, cuáles son sus objetivos y sobre todo que el mundo del golf en Andalucía sepa que tiene una Federación fuerte en la que poder apoyarse cuando tengan un problema.

En la actualidad, muchísimos federados no saben ni que tienen derecho a votar. Ignoran a la Federación, solo la tienen en cuenta para poner al día su hándicap. Y pienso que una Federación es mucho más que eso.

Antes de terminar, Reviriego añade: “Si me lo permite, me gustaría decir que he decidido presentar mi candidatura por puro altruismo y amor a este deporte, para ofrecer mi experiencia y mi dedicación desinteresadamente, porque voy a tener tiempo disponible y porque me gusta el golf”. Y apostilla: “Pido también unas elecciones limpias y democráticas en la que todos los candidatos hagamos honor a lo que es el espíritu de este deporte, basado en la integridad del individuo, respeto a los demás y a las reglas, demostrando cortesía y deportividad en cada momento, y que tengamos todos las mismas oportunidades. on sus 16 cilindros y de cuatro ruedas motrices, el Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse bien puede ser el vehículo de producción más sofisticado de todos los tiempos. Con una velocidad máxima de 410 kilómetros por hora, el Veyron no tiene parangón en la categoría de los superdeportivos. Su motor de 7.993 centímetros cúbicos escupe 1.200 caballos, lo que le permite unas amplias reservas de potencia: para una velocidad constante de 250 km/h, el Veyron sólo necesita 270 caballos. En primera se pueden alcanzar ¡más de 100 km/h!

El Veyron alcanza velocidades que, literalmente, levantarían el coche del asfalto si no fuera por su ingeniosa aerodinámica, lo que lo mantiene firmemente unido a la carretera incluso a máxima velocidad. Se ajusta el alerón posterior y se reduce de la distancia al suelo en un abrir y cerrar de párpados, y todo se suma a un perfecto equilibrio entre la propulsión y la aerodinámica.

Llevar al límite a este superdeportivo no parece algo habitual, pero en tal caso sus frenos cerámicos reducirían la velocidad aún más rápidamente de lo que el Veyron puede acelerar. Este coche excepcional sólo tarda 2,5 segundos pen pasar de 0 a 100 km/h, y todavía necesita menos tiempo –apenas 2,3 segundos– para pasar de 100 a 0, o sea, detenerse. Para reducir el riesgo de lesiones en accidente, Bugatti tiene el concepto de seguridad de Fórmula 1 adaptado al Veyron. Todos estos detalles técnicos se combinan para hacer de esta maravilla un sueño para los amantes de los automóviles.

ith its 16-cylinder four-wheel drive, the Bugatti Veyron may well be the most sophisticated production vehicle of all times.

Most of the components tucked beneath its hood are ingenious innovations that were formerly only deemed possible by visionaries such as Ferdinand Piëch.

Boasting a maximum speed of more than 400 km/h, the Veyron is unmatched in the super sports category. It offers a total of 736 kW (1,001 HP), and its ample power reserves, even at high speeds, are the fabric of dreams for luxury-class limousines: for a constant speed of 250 km/h, the Veyron only needs 270-280 HP. This means that the seven-gear clutch transmission works with a torque of up to 1,250 Newton metres.

The Electronic Stability Program ensures the necessary flexibility and manoeuvrability at any speed. The Veyron reaches velocities that would literally lift the car off the ground – if it weren’t for its ingenious aerodynamics, which keeps it firmly on the road even at full speed.

Adjusting the back spoiler, reducing ground clearance, opening and closing the lids… it all adds to the perfect balance between propulsion and downforce. Such a super sports car may not seem to be brought to a halt easily, but the Veyron’s ceramic brakes slow it down faster than it can accelerate. While it takes this exceptional car only 2.5 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h, it needs even less time – a mere 2.3 seconds – to come to a standstill from 100 (reference point).

To reduce the risk of injuries in accidents, Bugatti had a Formula 1 safety concept adapted for the Veyron. All these technical details combine to make the Veyron a truly exceptional super sports car.

Stefan Tjellarder began working at Holiday Golf 18 years ago, and since then the company has not stopped growing and expanding. The company was founded in 1989, and in Spain it began in a garage.

Now it has a 700 square metre warehouse and a large showroom to display its collections.

At the moment it is, possibly, the biggest distributor of golf products in Spain and Portugal. At the least, notes its general manager, it offers the largest range of products.

“Our main objective,” says Stefan, “is to provide good service to clients and always offer top-level brands, while also – of course – continuing to grow.”

To that end, he adds, ”We have exclusive brands such as Ecco shoes, which are proving popular due to their quality and design. The new models made from yak skin are causing a stir, such as Golf Street (without studs). They have become of the mostdesired products in the history of golf.

“Our portfolio also includes Bridgestone from Japan, which is a very, very strong brand. It is the second biggest seller of balls in the US and is now also making inroads with golf clubs. We have a new model which is only sold in Europe.

“Within this same group in North America we have Precept, which is the top ball in the world used by women.

“As for clothes, we have another number one seller among women, Daily Sport, which has an excellent relationship between quality and price and an attractive design, especially created for women over 40.

“Glenmuir is also among our brands; they have been supplying the polo shirts and jumpers to the European Ryder Cup team for the past 20 years.

“In addition, we are agents for Golfino. With clothes, as I mentioned, we have an extensive range.”

“We now have an agreement with Ahaed, which is the world’s leading brand for caps, mainly in the US. What they specialise in, apart from having loads of models, is working with logos, making variations, so not all the caps have the same design. They have 50 people dedicated to adapting logos. They do about 10 different kinds, which helps with sales in the shops.

“As for personalised products – in any material… textiles, metal, leather – we have Lorente, a very well known brand.

“We recently took on Golf Buddy, who are adding more and more very innovative GPS products. They measure the courses on foot, thus ensuring greater accuracy. Then the information reaches the equipment by satellite.

“Now,” adds Stefan, “they have launched a new ‘voice’, which provides the information verbally, in 10 different languages.

“Among the brands we sell I should also not forget Heavy Putter, or Pink Ribbon Golf, which allocates 10 per cent of its profits to charity organisations involved in the fight against breast cancer.“ Andalucía Golf / España Golf
