Rose Blooms into Major Champion

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

Justin Rose produced a sensational level par final round to overcome a rollercoaster last day and win the US Open Championship at Merion.

The Englishman held tough on an amazing final day in Pennsylvania, his closing 70 giving him a one over par total and enough to finish two clear of Jason Day and Phil Mickelson – who had to endure the heartbreak of a sixth runnerup finish in the event on his 43rd birthday. Rose started badly with a bogey at the third, but responded well and stood one clear on the final tee. The 18th on Merion’s East Course did not yield a single birdie over the weekend, but nobody got nearer than Rose – who split the fairway and, from within a club length of Ben Hogan’s plaque, fired a superb iron which was unfortunate to run through the green. An ingenious three-wood from the fringe stopped a couple of rotations short of the cup, but there were tears in the eyes of Rose as he tapped in for par on Fathers’ Day 11 years after the passing of his Dad and mentor Ken. “What a day,” an emotional Rose said. “I don’t know what to say, I’m thrilled. I just kept telling myself that (making bogeys) is what everyone is doing. “You saw me look to the heavens with it being Father’s Day - I was just trying to remember my dad.” It completes a remarkable rise to the top for Rose, 15 years after he burst onto the scene as a 17 year old amateur by finishing tied for fourth in The Open Championship at Birkdale. His professional career began with 21 consecutive missed cuts, but a first European Tour win arrived in 2002 and there has rarely been a backward step since. A first World Golf Championships title at last year’s Cadillac Championship confirmed the 32

year old’s status in the upper echelons of the game, and he was one of Europe’s leading lights in the miraculous Ryder Cup victory at Medinah – where again Mickelson was on the receiving end of his brilliance in the Sunday singles.

And he then missed the fairway on the short par four tenth - ranked the second easiest all week - only to hole his approach from the rough from 76 yards for an eagle to jump back to the top of the leaderboard.

Tony Jacklin was the last Englishman to win the US Open in 1970 - ten years before Rose was born - while Nick Faldo was the last to win a Major in the 1996 Masters Tournament.

Rose must have heard the enormous roar from the crowds but promptly hit his second shot to the 12th to two feet for birdie and then holed from 20 feet for another at the 13th to reclaim the lead before the forecast rain arrived to make life even more difficult as he began the daunting closing stretch.

But Rose had said after the second round that he knew “deep down” he could win a Major and held his nerve on a dramatic final day, carding five birdies and five bogeys. Mickelson’s closing 74 saw him finish two shots behind Rose in a share of second with Australian Jason Day (71), with Jason Dufner, Open Champion Ernie Els, Billy Horschel and Hunter Mahan two shots further back. Luke Donald, who played with Rose, recovered from a front nine of 42 to come home in 33 and finish alongside Steve Stricker on six over. Stricker hit two shots out of bounds, the second of them a dreaded shank, to take eight on the par five second.

The last five holes were all ranked among the nine toughest for the week, with the 18th the hardest at an average of 4.71. The good news for Mickelson was that he had played that stretch in one under par; the bad news for Rose was that he had done so in six over. The 14th duly cost Rose a shot when he found a greenside bunker with his approach as the heaviest spell of rain came down, but Mickelson - carrying five wedges and no driver - used one of those wedges to fire his tee shot on the 13th over the green and drop a shot.

Rose began the day two shots off the lead held by Mickelson, but with Merion playing havoc with the leading groups an outward nine containing three birdies and two bogeys was enough to give him a one shot lead.

Rose then charged his birdie putt on the 16th well past the hole and missed the return to drop back into a three-way tie, only for Mickelson to bogey the 15th having opted to chip from on the green after being left with an awkward putt through the fringe.

A three-putt bogey on the 11th dropped Rose back alongside Mahan before Mickelson reignited his challenge for a fifth Major title with a moment of brilliance.

Mahan took six on the same hole to fall two behind and Rose safely parred the 17th to head to the 18th tee with a one shot lead over Mickelson and Day, who then bogeyed the last.

The left-hander, who flew home to California on Monday and attended his daughter’s eighthgrade graduation on Wednesday evening before flying back overnight for a 7:11am start on Thursday, had three-putted the third and fifth for double bogeys and reached the turn in 39.

However, the tap-in par was good enough to secure a superb win as Mickelson failed to chip in for the birdie he needed to force a play-off. For more information and Tour news visit: www.europeantour.com

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

Less than 6 years since opening and Higueral Golf has already become a popular and strongly demanded golf course within residents and visitors of the Costa del Sol. El Higueral Golf is an 18 hole golf project where only 9 holes are built and open at this stage but its beauty, design, condition, pricing policy, excellent location, friendly challenge and devoted personnel have made of it a very peculiar and attractive golf venue. The course perfectly balances difficulty and enjoyment. Although buggies are allowed on the fairways, it is very easy to walk and is normally playable in less than 2 hours. Distance between greens and tees are reduced, highlighting the fact that ladies tees have been precisely placed to ensure

a fair and competitive game against the course and men. Loosing balls is not easy. Roughs are very forgiving in most cases. And the condition of the course is always manicured.

33€ anytime during the day. If you like to play all day long you can do so too for 45€. Play in the morning, relax on the beach and come back for another round!

Holes 4 and 6 are probably amongst the most beautifull in the area. Each of the 9 holes has its own personality, and just a spicy degree of difficulty to make your game both entertaining and not too difficult. Simply perfect for a golf day.

If you prefer to play Higueral on a frequent basis, please visit the club or the website: www.elhigueralgolf.com

Regarding pricing policy, it is simple and suitable to most golfers. You can play Twilight green fee for 25€ (from 4 pm at this time); 9 holes Early Bird with buggy for 3 € or 9 holes green fee for

Andalucia Cup 2013 A Huge Success! We would like to thank everyone who participated and made this years Andalucia Cup 2013 a great success. With 136 players enjoying 3 days of good competitive golf played on three of the coasts best courses, Santana, Torrequebrada and Santa Clara in which everybody commented on what great condition they were all in. There where some excellent scores over the three days ( their the ones who got to bed early the night before!! ) and not so good ( you know who you are!! ) . There was a friendly atmosphere throughout the tournament with players sporting some memorable golf gear along the way. The event was fittingly ended on the Saturday with a great night out at the Karbon Klub Fuengirola with prize giving, raffle and an auction which raised 5,600 Euros for Debra, the Marbella based butterfly Childrens Charity, again we sincerely thank everyone who handed over their hard earned cash to this worthy charity and to most golf courses on the Costa Del Sol who kindly donated green fees for this cause.

Alcaidesa Links

Facilities Driving range, Putting green, Golf Lessons, Buggies, Clubhouse, Restaurant

Requirements Handicap Limit: Men 28, Ladies 36 Soft spikes only

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are

the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years – the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. The design depicts a links course in many holes, with many unique Dye features.

La Reserva Golf Club, Sotogrande La Reserva Golf Club in Sotogrande has become, despite its tender years, one of the most prestigious courses in Spain. La Reserva continues to improve by leaps and bounds, and its 18 holes, designed by Cabell Robinson, are complemented by the lively social life of its magnificent Club House. La Reserva Golf Club has become a meeting point for members, friends and golf fans with a strong reputation, continually providing more and better services to its members. La Reserva’s Club House was founded in 2004 as an authentic country house, with facilities to suit members and non-members alike. It has five multifunctional rooms with an English bar, two dining rooms, a bar, a meeting room,

a TV room, a fitness centre, a large terrace overlooking the golf course for non-members, and two terraces, also with views, for members. The decor of the Club House is one of its best features. The central entrance courtyard has touches of Arabian style and of the five multifunctional rooms, two have fireplaces, giving them a rustic yet refined air. Also, there are two separate locker rooms: one for members and one for nonmembers. The first is large and spacious and offers services such as a Turkish bath and attentive customer care.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships

- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a

popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

La Duquesa

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.

On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

Facilities

Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -

but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens.

It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had

for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes

including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales

Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a

good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.

The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.

The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practise session. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 200m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied

tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,

well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is

over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,

even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging

course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and

beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.

The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best

courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport.

An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new

The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.

Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.

The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.

The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic

Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
