WORLD CORPORATE GOLF CHALLENGE
World Corporate Golf Challenge Announces Sotogrande as 2014 World Final Destination
World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) has announced that the 2014 WCGC World Final will be held in Sotogrande, from 1st – 6th July 2014. Players and guests will have the privilege of staying at the NH Almenara Hotel and Golf Resort and competing at La Reserva Club de Golf.
WORLD CORPORATE GOLF CHALLENGE
Costa del Sol Golf Guide
The World Corporate Golf Challenge represents one of the biggest corporate golf tournaments in the world. Since its inception in 1993 WCGC has grown to such an extent that over one million golfers have taken part in more than twenty countries. The 2014 World Final represents a fantastic opportunity for players to represent their company and country at one of Spain’s finest golf courses. Participating in the World Final is an experience of a lifetime. Last year’s World Final was held at The Carrick on Loch Lomond in Scotland, and the WCGC organising committee is thrilled to be bringing the event to Spain but in particular Sotogrande. Some of the world’s and Europe’s greatest golf courses are also in Sotogrande, including the 1997 Ryder Cup venue Valderrama, Real Club De Golf Sotogrande, Almenara Golf and lastly, La Reserva, the venue for the 2014 World Final. José Guerra, Chairman of the WCGC, said, “We are extremely delighted that the WCGC World Final will be held in Sotogrande, and we are sure the event will be a great success. Sotogrande’s facilities are outstanding and the Almenara Hotel and La Reserva are first class venues. We really look forward to being hosted there.” Sotogrande is the largest privately owned residential development in Andalucia, Spain. Originally a gated community, Sotogrande is located in the municipality of San Roque, Cádiz, Spain, and is situated within a 20 square kilometer (8 sq. mile) stretch from the Mediterranean Sea 25km east of Gibraltar. The venue site stretches back into the foothills of Sierra Almenara, providing contrasting views from the sea, to the hills, cork forests to green fairways, and even to the Rock of Gibraltar and Morocco beyond. The WCGC’s return to Spain, will be enhanced in every way by the facilities provided by the host venue. Apart from presenting the most select offering of luxury homes in Spain, every convenience can be found in Sotogrande: wide avenues, a leisure harbour, two beach clubs, the best hotels, a colourful marina and all kinds of services including restaurants and shops.
Sotogrande is also world famous for its polo fields with Santa Maria Polo Club, owned and run by the same owners of the WCGC, hosting international polo events throughout the year. This expertise in running events in the area will surely enhance the overall delivery of the event, and ensure that the WCGC continues to deliver professional quality events to the international amateur golf community. Sotogrande will support the WCGC Final and join a prestigious list of world class resorts that have played host to the World Final. Ramón Luengo, Director General of Sotogrande said, “To host the final of the World Corporate Challenge 2014 at our exclusive Golf Club La Reserva de Sotogrande is an honour and combines a top worldwide destination in the form of Sotogrande in Southern Europe with a world class amateur corporate golf event. The celebration of this prestigious international event will give us the opportunity to bring players from around the world to this excellent tourist destination, where they will experience great golf, water sports, polo, wonderful cuisine and a magnificent hotel, the NH Almenara Sotogrande, all in a unique natural setting on the coast of southern Spain.” Juan Alvarez Lozano, Manager of Golf Club La Reserva de Sotogrande, said “To be selected by the organisation of a tournament that has reached over one million people worldwide motivates us to attract even more visitors, who we are certain will make this one of their favourite golf destinations. We believe that the excellent design of Cabell B. Robinson, together with the care we put into the golf course maintenance, will provide a great test for all the competitors and will ensure this golf course continues to be one of the best in Spain and Europe.” For further information on Sotogrande, the Amenara Hotel and La Reserva visit: www.sotogrande.com To find more about the World Corporate Golf Challenge visit: www.worldcorporategolfchallenge.com

Valderrama Major renovation plan to upgrade the golf course Club de Golf Valderrama, the venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup, two World Golf Championships and 16 editions of the Volvo Masters, is currently undertaking major investments. Valderrama has been consistently ranked among the best courses in the World since 1988.

The fairways and greens have always received unanimous appraisal from players and experts. However, the Board of Directors has approved a major investment plan to upgrade the golf course and improve its position among the best manicured courses in the World. The first investment undertaken at this famous course in southern Spain, has been the complete renovation of the pumping system. A brand new pumping station, with the most advanced technology available on the market, was installed six months ago and it has produced excellent results. Fairways and greens are now much more consistent in colour due to the absence of dry spots or waterlogged areas. Apart from the visual effects and the improvement in the playing conditions, the new system has significantly reduced water and energy costs. The second major improvement on the course has been the new bunkers. All traps have been renovated by installing new drainage, liners and sand. The new sand conforms with USGA specifications and has been chosen after months of testing. Valderrama’s bunkers are now consistent in colour, texture and playing conditions thus improving the overall standard of the course. “Bunkers have always been an issue at Valderrama. We have rebuilt the bunkers
following the strictest and highest specifications and I am proud to say they are now matching the quality of our greens and fairways” says Valderrama’s general manager, Javier Reviriego. “We conducted many tests in our Par 3 course with different types of sand and we concluded that the current one fulfilled our expectations in terms of quality, playability and aesthetics. I’m confident the overall standard of the course has dramatically improved with this investment”. However, this is only the first phase of the renovation project, Valderrama is currently working on the improvement of many cart paths and the landscaping of the course. During the coming three years, the course will be improved in many areas: several greens and collars will be renovated so they remain completely free of Poa-Annua, which has always been one of Valderrama’s main assets. “One of Valderrama’s stamps of identity,” says Javier Reviriego, “is that all greens and fairways are free of bad weeds, so all areas that are slightly contaminated will be re-turfed with healthy grass”. Planned for the immediate future is the construction of a new pitching and chipping green, in a large area next to the current practice range. The new area will be designed by a renowned golf course architect and will resemble the playing conditions of the actual course.
The last phase of the program will include a major renovation of the irrigation system; it will be redesigned and changed from the current hydraulic one to an electric system. This will considerable improve the optimization of water and the uniformity of fairways and greens. “We believe there is still significant margin for improving the golf course. Our goal is not just to be number one in continental Europe, as we are now, but to be among the very best in the World. Our members and visitors demand the highest quality and we will do all within reach to provide it”, notes Reviriego. Valderrama has been recently ranked in 45th place in the World and number 1 in Europe by “Golf Architecture Magazine”; this top 100 ranking is elaborated with votes from the most prestigious golf course designers and architects in the World. With a total investment for the golf course of over 3 million €, one would think that a major golf tournament might be soon announced for Valderrama. WWW.CALLAWAYGOLF.COM
Callaway Golf FT Optiforce Callaway Golf has introduced two innovative products designed to to maximise clubhead speed and increase ball speed for distance gains, its FT Optiforce™ Driver and Fairway Woods.
The new clubs debut several new and systematically-designed technologies to help increase a golfer’s clubhead speed, ball speed and thus overall distance. The FT Optiforce Driver will – in a first from Callaway – offer loft and lie adjustability to optimise launch conditions. In a distinct approach, Callaway is launching two variations of the FT Optiforce Driver clubhead to help golfers find their optimal performance. “Callaway has always placed the golfer’s performance first when developing clubs and we feel strongly that one club head does not fit all golfers,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, SVP, Research & Development, Callaway Golf. “Players using an 8.5-degree driver are fundamentally different than players using 12.5-degrees of loft, so with the FT Optiforce Driver we have optimised each of the two available heads -- the 440cc and the 460cc – and adjusted critical elements like size, weight, centre of gravity position,
moment of inertia and others so that golfers have the best chance to optimise their launch conditions for better total performance.” The four primary technologies that merge to generate the speed and performance advantages of Callaway’s new drivers are outlined below: Aerodynamic Efficiency The FT Optiforce driver was born from an aggressively aerodynamic prototype that Callaway tested while exploring the complex variations in aerodynamic flow during a driver’s entire downswing. As a result, the FT Optiforce driver – based on its shape and construction - is tops among the fastest and most aerodynamically efficient driver Callaway has ever brought to market, leading to increases in clubhead speed. The FT Optiforce has been measured with 23 percent less drag than a conventionally shaped driver.*
Fast Configuration Also contributing to advances in clubhead speed is the overall configuration of the driver, including the use of lightweight Forged Composite™ in the crown and two stock shaft offerings that can enhance a golfer’s ability to deliver the club to the ball faster. The primary stock shaft is a 43-gram Project X Velocity shaft, the lightest shaft Callaway has ever included in a standard driver offering. The secondary stock shaft is a 62-gram Mitsubishi Diamana S+. The overall construction of the new driver is under 300 grams. Advanced OptiFit Adjustability The FT Optiforce Driver will debut an innovative loft and lie adjustability solution. The driver features an Advanced OptiFit® Hosel that allows players to adjust the driver’s loft 1-degree down or 1- or 2-degrees up. The loft setting helps golfers adjust their launch

angle and amount of backspin, while the lie -- selected with the neutral or draw settings also contained within the hosel -- will help golfers adjust side angle and sidespin. Coupled with the differences in the 440cc and 460cc heads, golfers of all abilities can use the simple adjustability solution in the FT Optiforce to find their optimal launch conditions and ball flight. Speed Frame Face Technology The additional clubhead speed in FT Optiforce generated by the aerodynamic shape and the overall configuration is then transferred to ball speed at impact with the driver face. Implemented with much success in the other 2013 Callaway drivers, the Speed Frame Face Technology found in FT Optiforce distributes stress across the titanium face for a larger, more consistent sweet spot and increased ball speed. The Speed Frame Face also saves weight that is redistributed in the clubhead to improve the
Costa del Sol Golf Guide
CG position and maximise MOI, which leads to optimised ball flight and forgiveness. Also available this month, the full line-up of FT Optiforce Fairway Woods share similar construction to the wildly popular Callaway X Hot Fairway Woods, including the blazing ball speeds the woods have become known for. The key differentiator for this series of fairway woods, available as a 3-, 4- 5-, 7- and 9-wood, is the higher trajectory golfers are likely to experience. “The FT Optiforce Fairways Woods are a powerful mix of the ball speeds of our X Hot Fairway woods and the trajectory of our RAZR Fit Xtreme Fairway Wood,” said Hocknell. The new fairway woods have a Forged Speed Frame Face Cup made of high strength Carpenter 455 stainless steel that produces significantly hotter responses all across the
face. The optimised centre of gravity (CG) in the fairway wood, accomplished in part through a proprietary design called the Internal Standing Wave, delivers a higher launch with slightly more spin than the X Hot Fairway Wood, resulting in consistent distances from everywhere on the course -- the tee, fairway or rough. The FT Optiforce Fairway Woods have a higher MOI as well, which contributes to the forgiveness and consistency that make these clubs easy to hit. The FT Optiforce Fairway Woods are also available with two stock shaft offerings, a 53-gram Project X Velocity shaft and a secondary Misubishi Diamana S+ shaft. Callaway’s new FT Optiforce Drivers will be available from 12th July across Europe for the following recommended retail prices: FT Optiforce Drivers: £329 FT Optiforce Fairway Woods: £179

Henrik Stenson Success boosts Ryder Cup hopes
Henrik Stenson almost doubled his career earnings on the US PGA Tour in one tournament in September, holding his nerve to become the first European winner of both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title. The 37 year old Swede, who had won just over $13,000,000 before arriving in Atlanta, carded a final round of 68 at East Lake to win by three shots from Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker and claim the first prize of $1,400,000, plus a $10,000,000 FedEx Cup bonus. Henrik Stenson’s stunning run of form, culminating in success in the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and Tour Championship, has propelled the popular Swede firmly into the reckoning for next year’s European Ryder Cup team. The 37 year old is back up to fourth on the latest Official World Golf Ranking – equalling his career high – and tops the European Ryder Cup World Points List, having completed a remarkable renaissance over the past 12 months. Stenson dropped as low as 230th in February 2012 as he struggled with his game and health, but after winning the South African Open Championship at the tail-end of the last season, his subsequent rise has been a meteoric one during the current campaign. A share of third place in the Aberdeen asset Management Scottish Open was followed up by Image ©TaylorMade®
runner-up finishes in The Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, third place in the US PGA Championship and victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship. He then became the first European to win the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup on the US PGA Tour, and he will be The Race to Dubai leader will be aiming for similar success on The European Tour next month when he embarks on the inaugural Final Series which climaxes at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates, from November 14-17. Further ahead, Stenson has his sights set on returning to The Ryder Cup fold, which takes place in exactly one year’s time, having established a commanding lead in the World Points list. He has already amassed 136.84 points, and should his fine form continue, but the end of the season he could surpass the 172.26 points accumulated two years ago by the final player to make the European team from the World Points List in 2012, Germany’s Martin Kaymer. Stenson last played for Europe in The 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club, memorably partnering Oliver Wilson in a gusty fightback to defeat Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim 2 & 1 in Foursomes.
But it was his debut appearance against the United States in 2006 that is etched in Ryder Cup folklore. Stenson holed the winning putt for Europe at The K Club in Ireland, defeating Vaughn Taylor 4 & 3, as Ian Woosnam’s team sealed a record-equalling 18½-9½ victory. Stenson led the World Points List in qualifying for that contest, and former Masters Champion Woosnam has backed him to be an important part of the European team again at Gleneagles next year. “I’m just glad to see him playing so well again,” said Woosnam. “He had a difficult time, but he has got a great attitude and it is great to see him back playing so well. He is such a strong player and has such a strong mind. “The last two months he has played fantastic. He is definitely the hottest player on Tour at the moment. When you have as much confidence as he does at the moment, the sky is the limit for him. “I was certainly pleased to have him on my team in 2006 and he would be great again next year if he makes it. He’s just a nice lad so it’s great for him to have this success again.” www.europeantour.com www.taylormadegolf.com www.henrikstenson.com

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are
the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. Thanks to Dave Thomas, the famous golf course designer, this golf course is now the best setting for any type of golf championship. Heathland Course 18 holes, Par 72 • 6373 • 6047 • 5272 H OLE

The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean
sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards. The New Clubhouse: Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avant-garde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity.

Valderrama Golf Club Valderrama’s Par 71 Championship Course measures 6390 metres from the pro tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot.
The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves. Its incarnation in its present form began in 1984, when Jaime Ortiz-Patiño was able to acquire it from the developers who a few years earlier had laid out the very extensive Sotogrande area so imaginatively and tastefully. Ortiz-Patiño had been one of the first to build a house, and for some years he had nursed the secret ambition to bring Las Aves to a greater potential. In 1984 he was able to acquire,
along with the golf course, certain additional parcels of land that would allow this. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made. Ortiz-Patiño renamed the course Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the firstclass player alike, and would bring out the

best golf that is in him.Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newlylaunched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain.
Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. ‘I found everything perfect,’ he said. ‘It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a
popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

La Duquesa
Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge.

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!
Facilities
Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.
The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast
greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. Atalaya also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes
including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales
Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a
good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. The Restaurant The Restaurant is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied
tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.
Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,
even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging
course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.
Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.
Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.
No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and
beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.
Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best
courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport.
An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new
The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.
Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.
The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.
The Par 72 course was originally designed by Kosti Kuronen, but much of it has now been re-designed by one of its most

MONTENMEDIO
From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic
Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
