La Reserva de Sotogrande A great venue for the NH Collection Open Photos ©Kevin Murray
The NH Collection Open, a new dual-ranking event split equally between the European and Challenge Tour categories, will be held on April 3-6 at the La Reserva de Sotogrande Club de Golf, in the southern Spanish region of Andalucía. The prestigious Cabell Robinson layout will be tested this week and will “pass the test with flying colours”, according to Tournament Director José María Zamora. José María Zamora: “The course is in top condition. It will be staging the International Spanish Amateur Championship this week, featuring the top European amateur players, and is sure to pass the test with flying colours.
Four-time national champion Santiago Luna is a big fan of the Andalusia track where he often enjoys practicing. In addition to winning the Spanish Championship through three decades (1988, 90, 92 and 2000), Santi has lifted six international trophies, including the 2013 Scottish Senior Open, and is delighted to have been invited to the inaugural NH Collection Open.
“The rough is not overly penal, and will be left as is for the NH Collection Open in April. The practice tee has been reseeded with ryegrass and so will some tees, probably on the par 3’s. The greens are currently quite fast (12). The European tour will need to control the speed during the tournament, due to the windy conditions in the area.
“La Reserva is a great layout where wind is a big factor. One day the breeze might blow from the east (levante) and the next from the west (poniente), so you get to play two completely different courses.
“Everybody at La Reserva de Sotogrande is committed to the tournament. We really appreciate their cooperation which makes us feel confident that the new event will be a great success.”
“Most fairways are generous, except on holes #1 and #11, and give you a feeling of space. The big slopey greens are a challenge, if you don’t place the ball on the right platform you might struggle to make par. #7 is a beautiful hole, a reachable par 5 with a view to the sea. #6 is a long, challenging par 3, the other par 3’s are downhill with tricky greens.
“The NH Collection Open is a bonus for this area and it would be great to see it return many more years. We need to keep promoting the Costa del Sol as a major golf destination and this event will help showcase our golfing facilities to the world. “I believe that this initiative by NH Group and Sotogrande will mark a big step forward for Spanish golf, proving that by doing things properly, good tournaments can be organized even in these difficult times. “I wish to thank both NH Group and Sotogrande, with whom I have a very special relationship, for inviting me to play. I am confident that their initiative will be wellreceived by the players, although I realize that schedules are planned at the start of the season and it’s difficult to fit in new events.” www.nh-hotels.com www.sotogrande.com www.europeantour.com

La Estancia Golf Exceptional major revamp Opened in 2004 by the Mélia Group, as Golf Mélia Sancti Petri, the course has been re-baptised as La Estancia by the new owners who took over in summer 2009.
New ownership, new management, and new and promising perspectives. Completely flat, the layout reminds you of a links, even though it is not next to the sea - albeit influenced by the winds in the area. Over the past two years La Estancia, located in Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz province, has undergone a spectacular metamorphosis that has completely transformed the club. In spite of its superb design, the course was relatively unknown with a not particularly positive image. La Estancia’s transformation has been proceeding step by step following the required improvements, and has become a course that is, without a doubt, a standard bearer in the area. Today it is well worth a visit to play on its new fairways.
In spite of the crisis, the new owners decided to make a major economic effort to transform it into a reference point, both for quality service and quality play.
radical, and in a certain sense so fast, that the course is looking forward to a brilliant future - as a quality layout is the main demand of all golfers.
The course has been lengthened from 6,257 to 6,390 metres from the white markers. La Estancia is a purely commercial course, pay and play, with some season ticket holders, but not that many, because we are in an area that doesn’t allow for that, with the nearby courses older and more established, and without a very large permanent population in the surrounding area.
La Estancia Golf offers special Unlimited golf packages during the whole year and special conditions for Golf Groups and Pga’s groups
Those who were familiar with La Estancia barely one year ago will certainly be able to appreciate the transformation. The change has been so

Puente Romano Hotel The essence of Marbella Most of us have been or know someone who has been to Marbella and told us about it. When we think about Marbella we end up concluding that Marbella is, in essence, great weather, Mediterranean Sea and diverse gastronomy. Marbella is fun, beautiful, healthy, full of nature, sport and sun… Marbella is a privilege and an aspirational destination. Puente Romano Hotel is, since its opening back in 1979, the essence of Marbella at its best. This is a 5 star Gran Lux Beach Hotel located right in the centre of Marbella’s Golden Mile between Puerto Banus and the Old Town. The hotel is built with the feel of an Andalusian village with small buildings surrounded by sub-tropical gardens - flowing down from the main road to the beautiful beach and lively promenade. In the main part of the hotel there is a 2000 year old Roman bridge which was part of the “Via Augusta” that connected Rome with Cadiz. This area is called Plaza Village and features an amazing variety of restaurants, including:
Namazake: An innovative Asian cuisine and cocktail bar. Serafina: Contemporary Italian cuisine by the millenary “roman bridge”. Suite lounge and club restaurant: Serving modern Arabic cuisine this is also Marbella’s hot spot, where social life and night entertainment takes place. From midnight this restaurant becomes the most fashionable night club in Marbella, where International DJ’s perform. There are two more restaurants in Puente Romano, nicely located on the beach: Sea Grill: Astonishing seaside restaurant and beach club with grill and tandoori cooking. Del Mar: Elegant and relaxing seaside restaurant with international cuisine.
Health and Sports are very relevant in Puente Romano, including not only its magnificent golf course and horse riding facility, the Marbella Club Golf Resort, but also a state of the art Gym and Tennis Club with saunas and Turkish baths as well as all the possibilities the Promenade offers. The Marbella Club Golf Resort is partly owned by Puente Romano Hotel, which is why when you stay at Puente Romano the green fee is included in the room price. The hotel has a variety of room types, but we would like to highlight the 55 sqm Junior Suites with private terraces and unique decorations. This is the normal room type golfers use when staying in Puente Romano whilst playing the Marbella Club Golf Resort at no extra cost. Rooms are available from 210€ per room per night, including accommodation, green fee, shuttle to the course and VAT. There is a lot to discover in this fantastic hotel. for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The ninth is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. The course has
been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a five minute drive from the 18th hole (or 19th hut) to Malaga Airport.

II The Gecko Pro Tour Tournament at San Roque Club New Course
Download the new pin positions app available for both courses
San Roque has a new fan in Jason Kelly, who won the Gecko Pro Tour by two strokes, ahead of Alfredo Garcia Heredia and Irish Brian Casey. It was his second victory at the course. The Nordic player controlled the situation at all times and closed the victory with 73 strokes for a cumulative -5 overall, an excellent result considering the difficult playing conditions.
The San Roque Club in collaboration with mypinpoint have launched a new app. Every visitor who has a smartphone will be able to check every day´s pin position on both courses without having a scorecard or even being out of the club.
San Roque always offers a great show and this week was no less. Only five players managed to break par, Manuel Jesús Muñoz Quirós and Thomas, did it with -1. The rain was constant in the two days of this Gecko, to the point that on Wednesday at half past nine they nearly stopped the game. However, the tournament director Pablo Mansilla, endured the situation and the sky gave a break. This tournament could not have been played at many courses in the Costa, but the excellent drainage system on the New Course gave us the opportunity. Jason Kelly has played three times on the Gecko Pro Tour at San Roque, and his results are spectacular: 1st in 2012, 2nd in 2013 and 1st in 2014. Jason Kelly said: “I love San Roque, the field and the club. It is a course that goes through the eye when I’m on the tee and also seems to be the only one where I get to score well “
The name of the app is “MYPINPOINT GOLFER” and it is free to download. It is available for Apple and Android systems. In the app, you will find a long list of golf courses where The San Roque Club (Old & New) are included. Pin positions are available in both metres and yards.
Kamakura Cup This perpetual trophy was first played in 2010. The idea was first to promote our Japanese restaurant and that members could enjoy lunch and prize giving in the restaurant after golf and this is what we are doing since then. The format for the competition was Individual Mixed Stableford. After golf, members enjoyed the delicious cuisine at the Kamakura. Our new member, Mr Iqbal Dharamsi was crowned champion with 39 stableford points.

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are
the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

La Reserva Golf Club, Sotogrande La Reserva Golf Club in Sotogrande has become, despite its tender years, one of the most prestigious courses in Spain.
La Reserva continues to improve by leaps and bounds, and its 18 holes, designed by Cabell Robinson, are complemented by the lively social life of its magnificent Club House. La Reserva Golf Club has become a meeting point for members, friends and golf fans with a strong reputation, continually providing more and better services to its members. La Reserva’s Club House was founded in 2004 as an authentic country house, with facilities to suit members and non-members alike. It has five multifunctional rooms with an English bar, two dining rooms, a bar, a meeting room,
a TV room, a fitness centre, a large terrace overlooking the golf course for non-members, and two terraces, also with views, for members. The decor of the Club House is one of its best features. The central entrance courtyard has touches of Arabian style and of the five multifunctional rooms, two have fireplaces, giving them a rustic yet refined air. Also, there are two separate locker rooms: one for members and one for nonmembers. The first is large and spacious and offers services such as a Turkish bath and attentive customer care.

Valderrama Golf Club Valderrama’s Par 71 Championship Course measures 6390 metres from the pro tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot.
The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves. Its incarnation in its present form began in 1984, when Jaime Ortiz-Patiño was able to acquire it from the developers who a few years earlier had laid out the very extensive Sotogrande area so imaginatively and tastefully. Ortiz-Patiño had been one of the first to build a house, and for some years he had nursed the secret ambition to bring Las Aves to a greater potential. In 1984 he was able to acquire,
along with the golf course, certain additional parcels of land that would allow this. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made. Ortiz-Patiño renamed the course Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the firstclass player alike, and would bring out the

best golf that is in him.Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newlylaunched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain.
Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. ‘I found everything perfect,’ he said. ‘It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a
popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

La Duquesa
Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes.

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than forty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!
Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast
greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. Atalaya also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes
including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

The 4th is one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, whilst the 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. The signature hole however is the famous 18th. A long par 5, with several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed - before reaching the clubhouse behind the green.

Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several mayor competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted “Course of the year” on the Costa del Sol.

Los Naranjos belongs to a select group of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, designed by world famous golf arquitect Robert Trent Jones and was built at a time when suitable land was still available. They quickley caught world fame with their championship layout and design, when the World Cup, Spanish Open and other important competitions were hosted.

Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-gras, are spacious and slightly undulated. The tees are long and have four markers: red, yellow, white and black with course lengths starting from 5.131 metres and reaching 6.532 metres at its longest.

Founded by D. José Banús in 1968, Real Club de Golf Las Brisas aspires to be the private club of choice for those who appreciate an exceptional golf experience in an inviting social environment. Their focus is to provide excellent service, well maintained facilities, superb dining and a variety of social events and recreational activities for the benefit of members and their guests. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, every hole at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has been carefully considered to be both pleasing to the eye and capable of challenging even the most experienced player. Numerous water
hazards and prudent bunkering combine with subtle dog-legs to suggest careful planning and good shot making is required in order to achieve the lowest scores. Flaura and Fauna Perfectly complementing the design of the golf course is the harmonious landscaping created by Englishman Gerald Huggan. Much like a botanical garden, plants and trees from all the continents of the world fill the course with imagination and colour. Here you will find rare species from Africa, Asia, America, Mexico and Australia combined with numerous palms and Mediterranean trees.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales
Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,827 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a
good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 7th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. The Restaurant The Restaurant is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied
tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.
Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,
even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging
course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

With its 6,536 meters, this course is the larger of the two in Mijas Golf. Keeping the original design of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course has been totally refurbished in 2012. Los Lagos is a course with soft slopes, wide fairways and few forest trees obstacles, but defended by many bunkers and not less than nine lakes, from which the course gets its name, eager to trap each and anyone’s ball. The greens are large and flat with sensitive undulations and the wide tees can be accommodated to reduce or enlarge the difficulty to choice.
Los Lagos is a course suitable for kind of handicap players, being one of the most famous commercial courses of the Costa del Sol. Signature Hole: Hole 5, Par 5, Handicap 3. It’s a long par 5 with a large green defended by a lake and bunkers on both left and back sides. It is advisable to play to the center of the fairway, as most of the whole left side is considered “out of bounds”; and, on the right, the water is predominating from the second lap till the end of the hole. Keep your eyes open when shooting to the green, because the bunker on its back side is not seen from the fairway.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and
beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Perched in the hills inland from La Cala de Mijas, with panoramic views over Fuengirola to the East and Mijas to the West lies the delightful new 9 hole course of Cerrado del Aguila. With a superb driving range and practice area and a delightful modern clubhouse you will feel at ease as soon as you arrive. The holes all have generous fairways that are in superb condition, as are all of the greens and tees. There are several small lakes on the course that are brought into play on a number of the holes, and they too are all very impressive to look at, bordered neatly by large rocks. The course is not overly long at 5,504 metres off
the yellow tee’s, but with 2 par 5’s well over 500 metres having to be played twice it will provide a test for even the longest of hitters. Toughest hole: The stroke index 1 hole, the par 5 2nd & 11th. Only 502 metres off the yellow tees, but being uphill all the way to the green it would be impossible to hit the green in two even for the monster hitters. If you get a par here you will have done extremely well. Best Par 3: 4th & 13th is 133 metres in length and the tee box sits high above the green. With water in front and to the left of the green it looks very impressive.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.
Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best
courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport.
An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new
The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.
Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.
The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic
Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
