With the new Head Professional Mark Emery, British PGA and German PGA Professional Mark Emery worked after his apprenticeship at the Worcestershire GC, Malvern, Worcs, for more than 30 years in Golf Clubs in the south of Germany. His greatest dream came true last year, when he was offered the position of Head Professional at The San Roque Golf Club. Mark has been visiting the San Roque Club for more than 25 years, enjoying the two great Golf Courses – the Old Course as well as the New Course, of which both are playable to all levels of golfers. Mark’s success as a teacher stems from his great eye for the golf swing using simple methods and words to correct and improve his students. Modern technology are used to support his teaching. Finca Cortesin Named Best in Europe by new poll
The deluxe Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa is celebrating a new honour after being named as the ‘Best Golf Resort in Europe’ by users of the respected website Leadingcourses.com

Finca Cortesin plans for the future
Finca Cortesin, a three-time host of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, is preparing to write a new chapter in its evolving history following the appointment of Miguel Girbés as new director of golf at the prestigious Spanish golf resort. Girbés will bring a wealth of experience with him to his new position at the deluxe Andalucian venue after spending the last seven-and-a-half years in leading roles at PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona. The Spaniard, who took up his post at the start of last month, arrives at Finca Cortesin at an exciting time with the exclusive resort undergoing a significant investment programme in 2017 designed to maintain and enhance its five-star facilities on and around the golf course. Among the many improvements taking place, an ambitious green renovation project will see the introduction of a new, environmentallyfriendly, UltraDwarf Bermuda grass – the first golf course in Spain with this variety. El Chaparral Antonio Pérez wins the Andalucían Senior Tour 2017
On Saturday, February 11th, El Chaparral Golf Club hosted the celebration of the second event for the Circuito Senior de Andalucía 2017, which was attended by more than 100 players. They played 18 holes under the stableford handicap system in three gentlemen and two ladies categories. The participants were able to enjoy the privileged environment in which El Chaparral Golf Club is located – surrounded by an extensive Mediterranean forest – and its demanding course, designed by José Gancedo, who put his skill and precision to the test. As for the results, and starting with the first gentlemen’s category, the winner was Antonio Pérez, who delivered a card of 35 stableford points to take the first position. Only one point behind, the second place in the handicap classification was for Enrique Giménez Huelin,
who, in addition, collected the prize for best lap of the day. Equally with 34 stableford points, the podium was completed by José Gago.
second respectively, with an identical result of 28 points. They were followed by Mohanie Sookdeo, with one less point.
Moving to the second gentlemen’s category, Francisco Morales, won the first place thanks to a total of 33 stableford points, the same as Stephen Raoul Peete, who took second place on the basis of the handicap difference. With just one point less, the third place went to Miguel Ángel García.
Finally, Chelo Zafra picked up the prize for the first place in the second ladies’ category, with 26 points, the same score as Felicity Jordan, who followed in second place. Rocío Hernández, completed the podium with 21 points.
Jose Antonio Rivera, took first place in the third gentlemen’s category with 28 stableford points. He was followed by Jose Mª Mora, who scored 27 points, and Ramón Gálvez, with 26. On the first ladies’ category, Antonia Silva and Macarena Benítez, ranked first and
A special mention goes to the player of Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club, Antonio Ortiz who, with 30 stableford points, ranked first in the 70+ category. The Andalusian Senior Tour 2017 will be divided into 11 qualifying events for the Ranking and will celebrate its grand final in November at Sancti Petri Hills.

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are
the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. The San Roque Club Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional.
Opened in 1991, and designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the Old Course is rarely outside the top 5 courses in Spain. The first 9 holes wind through Cork Oaks whilst the back 9 are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play.

“The course is designed to reward canny tactics & skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard 4 of the greens, also defended by more than 100 bunkers.” Designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros, the New Course opened in 2003. Since then it has blossomed into a mature and well respected course which can hold court with the best in the area. Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years - the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. The course was founded in 2003 and since its inception has played host to a number of world renowned golfing tournaments including the European Nations Cup, the MENA Tour and the Copa del Rey de España. Valderrama Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately one hour’s drive from Malaga International Airport.Valderrama is a private Members’ club with a limited number of starting times offered for visitors. Valderrama has been consistently ranked as number 1 in Continental Europe since the late 80’s and has been included in the Top 100 in the World since 1999. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course
architects, and was originally known as Las Aves (Sotogrande New). In 1984, Mr. Jaime OrtizPatiño, acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never seen before in Europe. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made. to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have
hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition” Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama is home of the Andalucia Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The

The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The
variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on
the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. Atalaya also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-gras, are spacious and slightly undulated. The tees are long and have four markers: red, yellow, white and black with course lengths starting from 5.131 metres and reaching 6.532 metres at its longest.
Los Naranjos belongs to a select group of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, designed by world famous golf arquitect Robert Trent Jones and was built at a time when suitable land was still available. They quickley caught world fame with their championship layout and design, when the World Cup, Spanish Open and other important competitions were hosted.
Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several mayor competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted “Course of the year” on the Costa del Sol.
The 4th is one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, whilst the 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. The signature hole however is the famous 18th. A long par 5, with several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed - before reaching the clubhouse behind the green.

Las Brisas The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.
For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA): “Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played. ”
The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden. During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous

In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years, especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros,
only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the ProAm played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete top-level golf experience.

Rio Real, perhaps one of the most attractive resorts in Spain, is located in an exceptional place at the entrance of Marbella. The golf course, which will be 50 in 2015, was designed by Javier Arana, who was considered the most brilliant Spanish designer of all time. This is visible in the maturity of its grove which encloses the carefully tended rounds making the whole scenery a delightful garden. The course sits on a slight incline to the sea, allowing many holes magnificent views to the Mediterranean Sea. It is not particularly tough despite the fact it crosses the river, from which the Club takes its name, on four occasions.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

The golf course at Calanova is an 18-hole par 72 design with a length of 5.866 meters. In the construction of the course, the rules followed for greens, bunkers, drains and tees, has been by the United States Golf Association. We can assure that every golfer, regardless of their handicap, will enjoy playing our course, which is spectacular in every way. The greens are 500 m2 on average, undulating and challenging, but always in immaculate conditions. A diverse selection of mostly wide fairways, with all hazards clearly visible from the tees. Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort.The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives are quite reachable in three without problems. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 11th: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 5th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 9th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

La Cala Golf Academy is situated beside the six hole par 3 course and is overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It has a grass driving range as well as putting, chipping and bunker facilities.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres.

Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Very easy to find. Access from either side of the main N-340 road at the ‘La Cala’ turn off. The course is a short distance north.
From A-7 Exit Cala de Mijas and follow signs to the golf course (about 4 kms). The course is also accessible from a road between Mijas and Alhaurin Golf.
Exit A-7 Fuengirola-Coín. At the roundabout, take the 5th exit onto A-7053/Camino de Coín. The course is about 3.5 kms from the highway.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.
Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Golf Torrequebrada was host to the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979. A unique feature is the variety of fairway design, which makes it important to choose the right club for each shot. The more intrepid player can test his skill on every hole, whatever his handicap. It would not be correct to draw attention to any particular hole as they are all part of the combined challenge presented by the landscape and nature itself. By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame.

The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

Exit the main A-7/N-340 coast road at La Cala, follow signs for Hipodrome Race Course and Cerrado del Aguila.

From Malaga airport. On the Algeciras / Motril-Granada-Sevilla highway, towards Malaga, take the exit Parque Technlogico-Cartama-Campanillas (near Carrefour shopping centre) and after aproximately 7 kms, take the exit Mercamalaga (House in ruins as landmark). For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.

LA ESTANCIA
From Jerez Airport: Take the motorway to Cádiz. A few ml before you arrive in Cádiz, you will find a detour into the E15-A48 to Algeciras and San Fernando (E5-A4), follow the signs in this direction. Before you arrive in San Fernando, you must get on the left lane to continue along the E5-A48 towards Chiclana and Algeciras. Continue along this motorway and take detour no. 15 to Conil Norte / El Colorado. On the first and second roundabouts follow the signs to Playa La Barrosa / Urb. Novo Sancti Petri. In Chiclana, 2.7 kilometres from the La Barrosa beach and at an altitude of between 14 and 28 metres above sea level, lies the new golf course of Cadiz, La Estancia, extending over 82 hectares. The course, located within a wholly natural environment, is a 72 Par peppered with protected areas which have been respected in the design of the course and which highlight its beauty, encouraging the player to use different strategies for each hole. The dominant winds, the East and West winds, make for a different game every day. The lakes and streams, as well as forming a significant part of the game, are
the natural habitat for the more than 25 species of birds that accompany the player during his/ her route around La Estancia. La Estancia Golf is a course which players of all handicaps can enjoy, presenting different challenges for each level of play, and being very convenient for walking. It also has a large fleet of buggies. From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services.
Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
