Noemi Jimenez To lead Women’s Golf Day celebrations at Finca Cortesin

Female golfers of all ages will have the opportunity to learn from one of Europe’s top emerging stars next month when Spanish ace Noemi Jiménez hosts an exclusive golf clinic at Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa to help the luxury resort celebrate this year’s global Women’s Golf Day. The San Roque Club is part of Golf Estate

Since last March, The San Roque Club has become part of Golf Estate which is a golf management, development and marketing company. It is the first intermediary manager of golf and club operations in Russia. On Saturday 30th March, a Member´s General Meeting took place at the club where Golf Estate President, Dmitry Kozachenko and Project Director Stephen officially announced that The San Roque Club is another challenging project by Golf Estate At the moment Golf Estate operates two golf clubs in Russia so this means that San Roque Club has been added to this list, being the first golf club managed in Spain. As Project Director Stephen Dundas declared, this is a historical moment for San Roque Club and the reason why they decided to buy this club is when they knew that the members were trying to organize a Members Buy Out. This showed them how much members care of their club. Among the short and long terms projects for San Roque Club, it is worth mentioning the investments and remodeling works on the whole Old Course, starting with the front 9 holes this year 2019, so that by end of June 2021 the course is fully renovated (new bunkers, new irrigation system...) In this ambitious project, both the Clubhouse and the Restaurant facilities will also experiment great improvements, with the aim

to maximize the functional aspect in these main areas. The plan for the Tony Jacklin House is to turn it into a nice boutique hotel offering an exclusive service in this area. After a very informative General Meeting, San Roque Captain and Lady Captain, who were part of the presidential table, as well as all the members present at the meeting expressed their excitement and gratitude to Golf Estate for these wonderful plans.

In words of the Project Director, Stephen Dundas, “the intention is to turn San Roque Club into that amazing place of which members feel proud of and to where visitors are looking forward to coming back soon”. clients´ satisfaction through the Management of the Club. Throughout the day new challenges and needs arise, which means that the programming follows the original plan with a daily adjustment and update.

Jaime Mamolar Greenkeeper at Chaparral Golf Club Jaime Mamolar, Greenkeeper at Chaparral Golf Club, is a Forestry Technical Engineer and Mountain Engineer with a Master in Green keeping (EADE). After finishing his studies, he started working for Grupo Eulen, doing technical maintenance studies on soccer fields and on golf courses in different regions of Andalusia, Melilla and the Canary Islands. With this experience, he started working as a Green keeper for Chaparral Golf in April 2018. What motivated you to a professional career in agronomy, and more specifically to the maintenance of golf courses? Since I was a child I lived in an agro forestry environment and I always liked the contact with nature, which led me to opt for Agronomic Engineering. I discovered the world of golf as a player and I found the maintenance and protocol work on the course so interesting that I specialized in green keeping. In this type of agronomy, most of the technical aspects of engineering can be developed. Chaparral Golf Club offered me to become part of an exciting project and I went to the Costa del Sol to get to know the course, the management and maintenance team and I thereafter decided to join the club as their Green keeper. What has been the evolution of the course this last year? Due to the plant growth cycle itself, the course is very changeable throughout the year. But in general terms, if we analyze each of the areas of play, the quality has clearly improved. We have done improved work in the construction and levelling of the majority of the tees, changed the fore greens, cleaned and cleared all the areas of ball drop and changed the sand in all the bunkers.

This first year I observed and studied the specific problems and needs arising during one vegetative cycle while improving the general condition of the course. Many areas that were unplayable have now been adapted to play, the plant density has increased, the mowing has been intensified, bunkers have been conditioned, etc. The substrate on the greens, the density of Agrostis and its health status have improved. Once a good development base has been established, the work now is to increase the speed and receptivity. How is the day-to-day life of a Greenkeeper in a Pay & Play course like Chaparral? The golf course has a wide surface and differentiated areas, which means that each day we have about 20 ongoing tasks of different maintenance work and reforms. Therefore, the organization of time in this work is fundamental. I usually divide the time into three blocks: the organization of resources, the inspection of the course and analysis of the

What improvements do you have planned for 2019? The maintenance program is divided and executed on the different areas of play, not only with the focus on maintaining, but also the improvement of each one of the areas. This year our main focus are on three elements: • We will specifically work the fringes of greens on to homogenize and pay special and put in optimal condition and all holes and with a height of no more than 8 mm. • Bunkers: improve the drainage and water collection systems to avoid contamination of the sand. • Paths: Although some improvements were made in 2018, during 2019 we will continue with the improvements regarding protection and security elements. The course of Chaparral is located in a special place, in a protected area of pine forest, which makes it a unique spot on the Costa del Sol. Do you have any specific maintenance and conservation plan? For us it´s essential to maintain the vegetation that provides this course with such a valuable environment, where the protagonist is undoubtedly the pine tree. My main objective is to maintain this type of vegetation in a state of development and optimal health and one of our main tasks is the control of the non-native vegetation interfering with the protected, local species of the area. This work of clearance also improves the playability of the course.

INTERVIEW

What is your strategic plan in course maintenance for 2019? Are we going to see more improvements and investments on the course? The Strategic Maintenance Plan is aimed at the following fundamental aspects: • Resolution of “old problems” that affect the state of the grass development: soil salinization and cyclical diseases and pests. • Increase the quality of our greens and fringe of greens, favouring the development of Agrostis grass against invasive species. • Maintain the quality of the tees, through a special schedule of planting, turfing and fertilization and to continue with the construction and reformation of new tees. The main investments to be executed are: • Acquisition of equipment for measuring physical parameters of the soil. • Construction of an Agrostis green house of 1,200 m2 to obtain turf and to continue reforming all the fringes before the end of the year and several greens. • Conclusion of the Tees Plan, building three new levels and reforming three others. • Reform of drainages and water collection systems in bunkers suffering from problems of this type. • Construction of about 150 meters of path and continue investing in the safety and protection systems.

Marbella Golf CC Members continue raising money for Cudeca

The members of Marbella Golf CC raised 620 euros for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice in the Members Memorial Trophy played on the 15th February 2019 in Individual Stableford format. Carl Horne won the trophy with 38 points on count back against Norman Cameron and Liz Britton came in 3rd place with 33 points. Nearest to pin winners were Catherine Shiels on hole 3 and Mike Munden on hole 11. Congratulations to all the winners! The club had the pleasure to present the funds raised to Esther RĂĄez MartĂnez from Cudeca on Thursday the 7th March 2019. These funds will help Cudeca to continue Giving Life to Days to those who need it most. From the Hospice Centre, Cudeca cares for over 1,300 people each year suffering from cancer and other advanced and non-curable illnesses. Cudeca Hospice offers support to the patient and to his family thanks to their professional team of doctors, physicians, psychologists, nurses and volunteers. All the support provided is completely free of charge and is possible in part thanks to donations like this. Marbella Golf CC look forward to holding another charity event in aid of Cudeca next year and seeing a good crowd participating again!

In 2018 a new clubhouse was built and the new golf course, Alcaidesa Heathland, that consists of 18 holes par 72, designed by the renowned former Ryder Cup player and author of numerous internationally renowned layouts, Dave Thomas. This course offers a variety of

The course was founded in 2003 and since its inception has played host to a number of world renowned golfing tournaments including the European Nations Cup, the MENA Tour and the Copa del Rey de España. Valderrama Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have

hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition” Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama is home of the Andalucia Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol.

The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The

variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.

On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast

greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens.

Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-gras, are spacious and slightly undulated. The tees are long and have four markers: red, yellow, white and black with course lengths starting from 5.131 metres and reaching 6.532 metres at its longest.

Los Naranjos belongs to a select group of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, designed by world famous golf arquitect Robert Trent Jones and was built at a time when suitable land was still available. They quickley caught world fame with their championship layout and design, when the World Cup, Spanish Open and other important competitions were hosted.

Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several mayor competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted “Course of the year” on the Costa del Sol.

The 4th is one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, whilst the 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. The signature hole however is the famous 18th. A long par 5, with several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed - before reaching the clubhouse behind the green.

Las Brisas The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.

For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years, especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros,

only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the ProAm played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete top-level golf experience.

Rio Real, perhaps one of the most attractive resorts in Spain, is located in an exceptional place at the entrance of Marbella. The golf course, which will be 50 in 2015, was designed by Javier Arana, who was considered the most brilliant Spanish designer of all time. This is visible in the maturity of its grove which encloses the carefully tended rounds making the whole scenery a delightful garden. The course sits on a slight incline to the sea, allowing many holes magnificent views to the Mediterranean Sea. Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort.The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives are quite reachable in three without problems. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,

well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 11th: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 5th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 9th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

La Cala Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf, La Cala also offers lessons and group classes for both beginners and experienced players, with multilingual professionals on hand to improve your game. La Cala Golf Academy is situated beside the six hole par 3 course and is overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It has a grass driving range as well as putting, chipping and bunker facilities.

The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is

over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Chaparral Golf Club is a 18 hole golf course situated in one of the most privileged settings on the Costa del Sol, close to Fuengirola and less than half an hour from Malaga airport and Marbella. It´s the only course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 5’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s and though not excessively long (5,800 meters), you will find a large variety of holes that are enjoyed by players of all levels. The magnificent sea views (only 700 meters from the beach) together with the rich vegetation and the surrounding lush pine tree forest have turned Chaparral into a

natural and golfers´ paradise with a unique scenery from every hole. Its success has been assured by the exceptional surroundings, facilities and quality of service. The signature hole of Chaparral, hole 8, is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3, hole 10 is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Santana Golf is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approx. 6207 metres in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland. The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with

sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees. In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica -as it is known by its original name-, is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

Very easy to find. Access from either side of the main N-340 road at the ‘La Cala’ turn off. The course is a short distance north.

An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course

on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport. The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.

It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services.

Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
