What’s in the box? Golf in the 21st century is now all about golf gadgets and technology that can help to improve our golf game, lower our handicap, gives us a better swing, record our statistics, navigate our round, connect us to other golfers, entertain us, educate us and generally inundate us with input! Whether it’s rangefinders for measuring your distances, GPS watches that navigate thousands of golf courses, game analyzers that record your shot data and give you post round statistics, launch monitors that give you all your shot details on the driving range, video apps that analyze every angle of your golf swing or any one of a plethora of training aids are designed you help you get it right every time, there is more technology available today than you can literally shake a stick at! Not surprisingly then we all need somewhere to turn (no pun intended) to help navigate our way through it all. This is where Black Box Golf comes in. REAL CLUB VALDERRAMA Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately one hour’s drive from Malaga International Airport.Valderrama is a private Members’ club with a limited number of starting times offered for visitors. Valderrama has been consistently ranked as number 1 in Continental Europe since the late 80’s and has been included in the Top 100 in the World since 1999. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition” Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama is home of the Andalucia Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play.

La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

LA DUQUESA Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an

excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After your game, wander into the Clubhouse bar to relax and enjoy drinks and food on the sunny terrace. Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres. Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!

Flamingos Golf This 18-hole, 71-par course measuring 5,714 metres was designed by the Spanish architect Antonio García Garrido, known for his meticulous landscaping. It has a great variety of trees and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. The immaculate contoured greens are generous in size but the fairways are slender on the first half of the course, where more precision is needed than on the second half. The strategically placed bunkers contain white marble chips; most fairways are sown with Bermuda whilst the greens and tees have been sown with Penncross.

With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary! ATALAYA GOLF Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with

olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. Los Naranjos belongs to a select group of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, designed by world famous golf arquitect Robert Trent Jones and was built at a time when suitable land was still available. They quickley caught world fame with their championship layout and design, when the World Cup, Spanish Open and other important competitions were hosted. The 4th is one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, whilst the 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. The signature hole however is the famous 18th. A long par 5, with several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed - before reaching the clubhouse behind the green.

Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-gras, are spacious and slightly undulated. The tees are long and have four markers: red, yellow, white and black with course lengths starting from 5.131 metres and reaching 6.532 metres at its longest. Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several mayor competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted “Course of the year” on the Costa del Sol.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF LAS BRISAS The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.

For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA):

“Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played.” The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden.

especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro-Am played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete toplevel golf experience.

During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. CABOPINO Cabopino Golf is situated on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little marina of Cabopino. The course was designed by Juan Ligues Creus. The layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf we find the excellent facilities of the golf Academy and driving range. The driving range has a capacity for 60 players, with a depth of 250 mts, and 160 mts, wide distance markers, bunkers, and the natural layout amongst the pine forest

SANTANA GOLF Santana Golf is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approx. 6207 metres in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland. The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand

produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees. In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica - as it is known by its original name - is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

the exceptional surroundings, facilities and quality of service. The signature hole of Chaparral, hole 8, is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3, hole 10 is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Chaparral Golf Club is a 18 hole golf course situated in one of the most privileged settings on the Costa del Sol, close to Fuengirola and less than half an hour from Malaga airport and Marbella. It´s the only course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 5’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s and though not excessively long (5,800 meters), you will find a large variety of holes that are enjoyed by players of all levels. GOLF TORREQUEBRADA Golf Torrequebrada in Benalmádena opened in 1976. The course was designed by José “Pepe” Gancedo, who has designed many golf courses in Spain, in the rest of Europe and in the States. It is considered one of the best courses in Europe. Golf Torrequebrada was host to the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979. A unique feature is the variety of fairway design, which makes it important to choose the right club for each shot. The more intrepid player can test his skill on every hole, whatever his handicap. It would not be correct to draw attention to any particular hole as they are all part of the combined challenge

Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella. The trees and plants within the course are

typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary. The signature hole is number six, a par five dog-leg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

The course was designed by the late Folco Nardi and the idea was to create a course that was technically challenging yet not too difficult. With a good concentration and the correct selection of the clubs the player can end up with a good score in one of the 50 competitions played every year at Lauro Golf. The extension of the course with the holes 1927 designed by Mariano Benitez follows the same lines and equally requires concentration and skills. The course is moderately flat and can be played by foot though there are two holes located on the side of the mountain and from which we can enjoy some spectacular views over the valley of Guadalhorce and the Mediterranean.

The club house is located in an old Andalusian building, Cortijo el Paredón, where you can find the restaurant, changing and locker rooms, pro shop and the Caddy Master´s Office. On our premises and the surroundings you can also find a swimming pool, a padel tennis club, lawn bowls club and an equestrian centre. In the middle of the cortijo there is a fabulous patio, with an enormous ficus tree in the middle which offers shade to the players enjoying their food and drinks after a game of golf.

How to Find

Exit A-7 Fuengirola-Coín. At the roundabout, take the 5th exit onto A-7053/Camino de Coín. The course is about 3.5 kms from the highway.

Exit the main A-7/N-340 coast road at La Cala, follow signs for Hipodrome Race Course and Cerrado del Aguila.

From Malaga airport. On the Algeciras / Motril-Granada-Sevilla highway, towards Malaga, take the exit Parque TechnlogicoCartama-Campanillas (near Carrefour shopping centre) and after aproximately 7 kms, take the exit Mercamalaga (House in ruins as landmark). Turn right at the intersection and follow the signs “Campo de Golf”. The course is located 4 km from that point. Total distance from airport approx. 15 kms.

By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens

and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport. The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

Anoreta Golf was designed by the Ryder Cup Golf champion Jose Maria Canizares and was the first 18 hold golf course to be built to the east of Malaga city. A par 72 golf course it is 6,016 metres long for the professional player and 5,833 metres long for amateurs. First opened in 1990 Anoreta is a challenging course for all levels of player ability. share an unforgettable day. If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.
