“The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service.” Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities.

The course offers a great deal of variety, with a mixture of different length par 4’s which give the opportunity to strategize from the tee. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards and hillsides to contend with should you be wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182 metres from the men’s, and a massive 208 from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green. “Since early 2012 we have restored the golf course to its previous perfect condition.” On May 19, 2011 Santa Clara Golf Marbella suffered the worst natural disaster since its opening in 2001. On the morning of that Thursday there fell on the golf course over 150 litres of water in barely just two hours. The water collected in the upper Arroyo de las Siete Revueltas and caused a huge surge of water along the course of the stream. Due to the fact that the Andalusian Water Agency had not adequately cleaned the river bed the water dragged with it a huge collection of branches, rubbish and reeds etc., thus causing a huge amount of water and debris to collect at the entrance of the water course to the golf course. Under the pressure of this water, there was an explosive surge that caused this great flood of water, mud, trash and debris to slide down the river, destroying the existing channelling and damaging bridges as well as the banks of the stream.

Featured Course

When the water reached the 18th hole, the amount of accumulated rubbish caused a new plug of debris that caused the whole mass to overflow and flooded half of the 18th fairway, the green, lake and three-quarters of the driving range.

and have returned the buggy tracks to their previous condition,” said Ignacio. “We have taken the opportunity to repair and improve the 14th. hole, a par 5 hole of 524 meters, augmenting the channelling of the small stream that runs along the left side of the fairway.”

“Despite this disaster we were fortunate that this catastrophe happened at dawn”, said Ignacio Apolinario the manager of Santa Clara Golf Marbella, “for if it had occurred in the morning, with the golf course full of players, the consequences could have been far worse”.

This combined restoration and improvement work has restored Santa Clara Golf Marbella to its rightful place at the pinnacle of the enjoyment of golf in the Marbella area.

The golf course was closed for 17 days, with all staff engaged in cleaning the mud, debris and vegetation, trying desperately to return the course to its original pristine state. Almost immediately, work began on fairway repair and restoration of embankments that had been destroyed, as well as the golf cart tracks that run along the banks of the stream. The total works lasted seven months and incurred a cost of 1.5 million Euros, which were covered by the Insurance Compensation Consortium. “Since early 2012 we have restored the golf course to its previous perfect condition. A great job has been done of restoring the stream bed, placing large stone breakwater walls around the most damaged part of the course,

European Hat Trick On the US PGA Tour

In the ever changing fight for world golf domination, it appears the European golfers are taking control right now - with the trio consisting of Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood trying to open up a gap from the rest. Joining the victory party in March however was Justin Rose - who made his own contirbution towards a European triple on the US PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy’s ascent to World Number One was not only a significant milestone in the Northern Irishman’s already glittering career, it continued the dominance of Europeans at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking. Since England’s Lee Westwood ended Tiger Woods’ 281-week reign on 31 October 2010, the top spot has been in the hands of European players, with Germany’s Martin Kaymer, Englishman Luke Donald and McIlroy all enjoying spells at the summit of the sport. It goes hand in hand with a remarkably successful two-year spell for European Tour Members, during which time there have been Major victories for Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel, Darren Clarke and of course Rory McIlroy’s US Open win in 2011. The latest spell was a hat trick of victories by European players on the US PGA Tour. McIlroy with a victory at the Honda Classic, Justin Rose’s WGC-Cadillac Championship win and Luke Donald’s win at the Transitions Championship. Westwood set the ball rolling in late 2010 when Woods finally fell from the place he had occupied for more than five years, and he stayed there until Kaymer reached the final of the WGC-Accenture World Match Play Championship, a few weeks after he

won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship for the third time in four years. Westwood reclaimed the top spot in late April, but it was Donald who deservedly held the title for most of last year, enjoying the finest season of his career as he won four times to become the first player to top the money lists both both The European and the US PGA Tours in the same season. The 34 year old had taken over from Westwood after a dramatic final day in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in May, where the duo went headto-head in a play-off for the title and with it the World Number One position. Donald triumphed and put a stranglehold on the Number One title for 40 weeks, although lately he would have been conscious of McIlroy and Westwood creeping up behind him with their impressively consistent form. Both men had the chance to reach pole position with victory in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship the previous week, but they came up just short, McIlroy beating Westwood in the semi-finals before losing to American Hunter Mahan in the final. The 22 year old did not pass up the opportunity at the second time of asking,

however, and, needing nothing less than victory in the US PGA Tour’s Honda Classic to do so, withstanding a charging Tiger Woods to close out a brilliant victory. European players have also occupied the top four positions in the Official World Golf Ranking since early November last year, when Kaymer moved back up to Number Four following his victory in the WGC-HSBC Champions in China. The quartet of Donald, Kaymer, McIlroy and Westwood dominated the top four for spells last year, in several combinations, and McDowell also joined them at one stage in March, reaching a career-high fourth. McIlroy, 2011 US Open Champion was hoping to keep the title of world number one for as long as he could, saying: “I’d like to stay there for a while,” he said. “As long as I keep playing good golf and have chances to win tournaments, then hopefully I’ll stay up there. “I feel the way I’m playing at the minute and with the level of consistency, hopefully I’m going to be able to stay there for a while.” However Luke Donalds victory at the Transitions Championship meant McIlroy’s dominance lasted only two weeks...

“A one shot victory at the WGC-Cadillac Championship heralded a personality at peace with his game and with himself.” After completing the biggest win of his career to date at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Florida, a superb victory that propelled the Englishman back into the world’s top ten, Justin Rose reflected on the sense of calm confidence now instilled in his game – a mentality helping the 31 year old to emerge from the shadows in European golf’s ‘Golden Era’. Rory McIlroy was barely nine years old when Justin Rose announced himself to the sporting world in thrilling fashion at the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as a fresh-faced 17 year old amateur. Nine years later it was McIlroy’s turn to capture the imagination of golf as an 18 year old amateur, again at The Open Championship but this time north of the border at Carnoustie, storming into the public eye after shooting an opening round 68 – the only bogey-free round of the day.

While now, almost five years on, the Northern Irishman is netting a plethora of global headlines thanks to his ascent to the World Number One spot, the re-emergence of Rose – a man whose shoulders were bestowed with as equally large a burden of expectation following a glorious prologue to his career – in securing a one shot victory at the WGCCadillac Championship heralded a personality at peace with his game and with himself. Speaking after winning the event Rose said: “I felt comfortable on the weekend. I felt calm. I felt ready to play well,” said Rose, whose triumph in Florida was the biggest in a 14-year career and propelled him up to seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking. “Maybe it was just a fact you desensitise a little bit to the pressure, to the cameras, to the crowd, and you get more comfortable. I think that’s why guys like Tiger [Woods]

and Phil [Mickelson] are so good down the stretch and under pressure, because they have done it so often. I think it’s all about just getting comfortable.” In hoisting the Gene Sarazen Cup on Sunday, a trophy he described as a “little beauty”, Rose sealed his fourth win in the last 20 months, having also previously captured the US PGA Tour’s BMW Championship last September and the Memorial Tournament and AT&T National in the summer of 2010. Quite the purple patch, then, for a man who just seven years ago was outside of the top 100 in the world ranking. Having now thrust himself alongside a quartet of Europeans to hold the number one spot in McIlroy, Donald, Kaymer and Westwood, the unassuming Rose is more than aware of the increased attention that will indisputably follow heading into the 2012 Major Championship season.

“There had been only five birdies at Innisbrook’s 18th all day, but on their return Donald found one to win the first extra hole...”

Luke Donald returned to Number One in the Official World Golf Ranking with victory at the Transitions Championship. A closing 66 took Donald into a fourman play-off with Bae Sang-moon, Jim Furyk and Robert Garrigus.

He hit an excellent approach shot on the first hole of the play-off with a seven iron from the rough - and holed the putt to make sure of the victory. Robert Garrigus had also given himself a birdie opening - but the American’s chance had gone when the putt went past the hole.

There had been only five birdies at Innisbrook’s 18th all day, but on their return Donald found one to win the first extra hole and dislodge Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy.

Donald admitted the win was a morale booster ahead of the Masters Tournament.

McIlroy had gone to World Number One just two weeks prior with victory at the Honda Classic, and with Justin Rose’s WGCCadillac Championship win in between Donald’s win completed a hat trick for Europeans on the US PGA Tour.

He said: “I feel like I’ve achieved a lot in my career but this is perfect preparation. I’ve got two weeks off now and can look forward to Augusta. “I certainly was a lot more nervous about getting to number one the first time. This time it wasn’t my focus - I was focused on winning the tournament and it all worked out.”

A run of five birdies in the first 11 holes moved Donald into contention, before he consolidated with seven successive pars to make sure of a 16th top-ten finish in his last 22 US PGA Tour events.

McIlroy was quick to praise his Ryder Cup team-mate as he said on Twitter: “Well I enjoyed it while it lasted! Congrats @ LukeDonald! Impressive performance!”

Garrigus had given himself a chance of victory with birdies on the last two holes giving him a seven under round of 64. Bae, seeking to become only the third South Korean to win a US PGA Tour event, held the lead yesterday but a final-round 68 was enough to earn him a place in the play-off, while joint overnight leader Furyk managed a 69. Fellow overnight leader Retief Goosen slipped out of contention, finishing on seven under after a final round 75. Ernie Els appeared to be in a good position when he held a narrow advantage with two holes to play but a pair of bogeys on the final two holes ended his hopes of victory and saw him finish a shot off the pace alongside Scott Piercy, Jeff Overton and Ken Duke. With The Masters taking place at the beginning of April there could have been many more interesting developments for the Europeans by the time you’re reading this!

EUROPEAN TOUR

Open de Andalucía Quesne enters record books at Aloha Golf Club A career best shot on Sunday afternoon of the Open de Andalucia at Aloha Golf Club in March enabled Julien Quesne to write his name into the record books and continue the dominance of former Challenge Tour players on The European Tour this season. The unassuming Frenchman picked a prime time to post the lowest round of his fledgling European Tour career, a 64 which not only equalled the Aloha Golf Club course record set on the opening day by eventual runner-up Matteo Manassero of Italy, but also saw Quesne become the 400th different winner on The European Tour. Since Antonio Garrido set the ball rolling with victory at the 1972 Open de España, a further 399 players have entered the winners’ enclosure, with Quesne becoming the 11th Frenchman to triumph on The European Tour. His victory, which earned him €166,660 and took him to 24th in The Race to Dubai, was also the seventh by a former Challenge Tour

player in ten European Tour events so far this term, following wins for Louis Oosthuizen (Africa Open), Branden Grace (Joburg Open and Volvo Golf Champions), Robert Rock (Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship), Rafael Cabrera-Bello (Omega Dubai Desert Classic) and Justin Rose (WGC-Cadillac Championship). The quietly-spoken 31 year old won last year’s Allianz Golf Open de Lyon en route to finishing in 13th place in the Challenge Tour Rankings, but coming down the stretch with a slender lead on Sunday afternoon at the Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol was a rather more severe test of his mettle – and one he passed with flying colours. Faced with a daunting approach to a narrow 18th green guarded by bunkers, Quesne did not blink, striking a superb four iron to six feet and duly rolling in the birdie putt to finish on 17 under par and spark celebratory scenes amongst the Tour’s French contingent who, in the absence of champagne, instead sprayed their compatriot in the Spanish equivalent, cava.

Speaking afterwards, the man from Bordeaux vowed to reward tournament host Miguel Angel Jiménez, who finished in a tie for seventh place, with a case of vintage ‘vin rouge’. He said: “I’ve been dreaming about this moment since I was ten. It wasn’t easy with Matteo, Miguel and Eduardo [de la Riva] all playing well, but I knew what I had to do. “From the 15th hole I was asking my caddie to keep an eye on the scores, so I knew that if I holed my putt on 18 I would have a very good chance of winning. “My four iron on 18 was the best shot I’ve ever hit. I’m very proud that I won shooting a 64, finishing with a birdie on 18, the toughest hole on the course. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. “I’m particularly happy that I won the tournament organised by my favourite player, Miguel. I’ll send him a case of Bordeaux wine, because I know he likes it so much.”

A turn blouson made of microfiber represents the JFK inspired look in style and function and offers both – a bold piece and a restrained piece. Simple unigreen on the one side is broken up by a Vichy pattern in black and white on the other side. Vichy is found on the Jacquard polos and jumpers made of pima cotton in different sizes. Vichy trousers made of Cottonstretch, which combine all the colours and Extra Dry polos with colourfully different collars, mesh details or highlights on the sleeves are suitable. Flex Caps complement the look.

Henley V-neck knitted material with long sleeves or as a slip-on made of fine corduroy pima cotton, which represents the sporty look of the module. Highly functional jackets and vests are made of light 3-Ultra. The highlight is the enlarged GOLFINO logo on the caps and the Extra Dry polos. Also new are in colour contrasting stripes on the button tabs, the seams and the collar. Socks in matching colours complete the look. A colour highlight is the forceful clay red, which is also taken up into the pattern of the checked trousers. Colour tones like washed out pale blue and the water tone coast give a balance.

The soft colour tone of light stone and a powdery chalk tone dominate in a combination with intensive navy blue and a neutral white colour theme. Inspired by lukewarm summer nights light shorts made of functional Technostretch material matching light piquĂŠ-polos, made of functional Extra Dry, or with sun protection can be worn. These exist as simple unis, with functional mesh insertions for ventilation and with different stripe patterns. Checked Bermudas in jeans cut with a ballmarker are topped with a striped belt. A slipover with wide stripes made of pima cotton, a Panama hat and a diversity of hats round off the look.

Alcaidesa Links

Facilities Driving range, Putting green, Golf Lessons, Buggies, Clubhouse, Restaurant

Requirements Handicap Limit: Men 28, Ladies 36 Soft spikes only

The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are

the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards. The New Clubhouse: Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avant-garde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity.

Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional. are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play. La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience.

The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop. Signature Hole: Hole 17. Par 4. A test even to players of the highest level. A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships

- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.

On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

The objective of Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest.

The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace. Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water.

18 holes of peaceful undulating Spanish countryside boasting stunning sea views from many areas of the course, Estepona Golf provides a fair test enjoyed by players of all standards. Renowned for their superb, consistent putting surfaces, the course features a wide variety of holes. The English owned golf course has for many years focused on the visiting golfer from overseas, with knowledgeable, multilingual staff always offering a warm friendly welcome. The clubhouse has recently benefited from a €400,000 renovation, where a superb selection of multinational food, wine and drinks are

available in the comfortable restaurant, bar and terrace. With an ongoing course improvement programme in place, a visit to Estepona Golf is always incredible value for money. Signature Hole: Hole 10. Par 4. A beautiful downhill short par 4 with the green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe, however you may feel that at only 250 meters downhill and the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. A straight one will make an eagle/birdie very possible - but just slightly out and you are looking at a 6. Decisions, decisions!

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -

but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had

for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes

including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a

good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.

The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.

The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed.

This is a family orientated club, where all golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse. In the heart of the Course, diners enjoy spectacular views from the restaurant terrace. Renowned for the quality of its food, it is a must place to visit. Open from Tues. - Sat. from 19.00 untill late and Sundays from 13.00 untill 17.00 to members and non-members, serving lunch and dinner. The delicious lunch menu is good value and our gourmet dinner and selection of wines is excellent. An ideal place for an intimate dinner, or for entertaining friends or colleagues.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied

tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,

well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is

over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,

even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

Cambio de Sentido El Faro

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging

course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and

beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best

courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.

The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.

The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic

Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
