18 hole championship golf course Designed by World famous golf course architect Mr. Cabell Robinson who worked many years for the Robert Trent Jones Group; The Finca Cortesín layout is simply spectacular. The main features are the length of the course (6,808 mts.) and the great variety of its natural vegetation which includes olive trees and corks. The 18 holes are very unique since every hole is completely different to the others making the game more enjoyable. Technically speaking, it is important to emphasize the following features: the Bermuda 419 Grass fairways are very wide (up to 50 mts.), the bunkers are beautifully shaped and filled with white silica sand. Tee boxes are very high quality (every hole has several tee platforms so the player always finds them in perfect shape). Without doubt, the greens are one of Finca Cortesín jewels, they all have slight brakes and have the quality to be extremely fast. Driving range Located next to the clubhouse, the driving range has two levels for training: one with natural grass (Bermuda 419) and the other with artificial grass mats (20 bays). The range has four greens situated at different distances to practice all kinds of shots. The orientation of the practice area is southwest to avoid hitting into the sun at anytime of the day. Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy The Finca Cortesín Golf School has the master franchise for the teaching system designed by the best player of all time. It has a coaching studio with the latest technology and reserved for monitored swing analysis. Clubhouse Secured parking, restaurant, members’ area, proshop with the best brands in clothing and clubs and high quality locker rooms. The clubhouse restaurant has the signature of acclaimed Dutch Chef Schilo Van Coevorden.

“Most players will go for the green with a short iron, but the green is small so many will miss and face a delicate chip shot.” Hole 1 - Par 4 - 431 mts A perfect hole to start with a beautiful tee shot to a very wide fairway. The second shot requires great precision as the green is well protected by a huge bunker on the left. If you miss the green right you will face a very fast downhill chip. The green is huge but fair. Hole 2 - Par 3 - 218 mts First Par 3. Long hole demands a very precise tee shot. The green is surrounded by bunkers that can make up and downs difficult. The green has several small landing areas. Better to leave a putt under the hole to avoid a horrible down hiller. Be aware of the wind as the tees are slightly elevated. Hole 3 - Par 5 - 495 mts Beautiful Par 5. All the assets a great golf hole should have: wide fairway, great views and payoff if you if you get to the small green. Long hitters be careful with the lay up as water comes into play.
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 305 mts Long hitters face a great challenge playing this hole. The green is within range but a huge lake protects it from all tee shots not perfectly struck. For those not going for the green, a long iron or fairway wood is the right choice. Beware of the slopes on the green and the difficult pin positions. Hole 5 - Par 5 - 526 mts A great Par 5. The fairway becomes tighter the closer you get to the green. Very few players reach it in two, but many will be tempted. The green is extremely narrow for a long hole. It demands much precision when attacking the flag. Many nicely shaped bunkers protect the green. Hole 6 - Par 3 - 226 mts Very long Par 3 with a huge green. Avoid leaving your tee shot short of the green. All bunkers protecting the flag are very deep and will leave you with blind shots.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 452 mts Longest Par 4 on the Costa del Sol and stroke index 1. Very wide fairway. Tee shot must avoid all bunkers to reach the green. Second shot requires a long iron to a big green. A very fast green with downhill putts can ruin chances of making Par. Only top level golfers putt for birdie. Hole 8 - Par 5 - 525 mts Very difficult Par 5 with a very tight fairway. Tee shot must be faded to avoid bunkers on the left. Long hitters should probably go with a fairway wood off the tee. Second requires great strategy as bunkers and heavy rough surround the lay-up area. Hole 9 - Par 4 - 348 mts Pictured above. Short Par 4. Great holes don’t have to be long. Easy tee shot to a wide fairway but a difficult approach to the green. Most players will go for the green with a short iron, but the green is small so many will miss and face a delicate chip shot.

Hole 10 - Par 3 - 207 mts One of the best holes on the course. Spectacular Par 3 with great views if Estepona Mountains. The green is not very long or very small (Spanish guitar shaped) but is well protected by a water hazard on the right. Be careful of the wind. Club selection is always difficult from an elevated tee.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - 323 mts Short Par 4 that will see many birdies and probably eagles. The designer decided to give players a break after a few vary long holes. Wide fairway, big green and many bunkers that make this hole truly beautiful, especially viewed from the clubhouse.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - 573 mts Double dog-leg Par 5. A very wide fairway and a blind second shot to a small landing area covered with bunkers. A beautiful natural stream runs along the right of the hole. With almost 600 meters very few will have a chance to putt for birdie. Hole 12 - Par 3 - 205 mts Number 12 will be a difficult hole to forget. Elevated tees to a huge green surrounded by several deep bunkers. It’s the biggest putting area on the course and one of the most difficult ones to read. Hole 13 - Par 4 - 383 mts Pictured above. Finca Cortesín’s Signature hole. The drive is played to a wide fairway, avoiding a water hazard running across the front of the green. Bunkers right and left. The green is large and sloping, allowing several pin positions that equally affect both the approach shot and the putting. Hole 15 - Par 4 - 414 mts One of the most demanding holes on the course. Tee shot is very difficult since

a huge water stream must be flown to reach the fairway. Second shot will probably face an uneven lie to a small and well protected elevated green. Hole 16 - Par 4 - 424 mts Great hole to face at the end of a round. Long, demanding with a very narrow green that has several difficult pin positions. Many bunkers on the left side of the green will make you hit the right side which will leave very fast downhill chip shots. Hole 17 - Par 3 - 162 mts Shortest Par 3 on the course, but without doubt the most technical of all. Precision will be needed when attempting to hit the green. The slopes on this hole make it the most difficult green to putt on. Great views of the Estepona Mountains. Hole 18 - Par 5 - 519 mts A great finishing hole. This Par 5 allows big hitters to really smash the driver. The lay up must be precise to gain the opportunity to approach a narrow green. Good strategy will help you with a chance of making birdie.
“The green is large and sloping, allowing several pin positions that equally affect both the approach shot and the putting.”

Ian Poulter, 2011 Champion
History of the World Match Play Championship
The inaugural winner of the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth in 1964 was the legendary Arnold Palmer. He and Gary Player were to dominate the first five years of the Championship with Palmer winning twice and Player three times. Player went on to win two more titles and was involved in many dramatic matches round the West Course; the most memorable of which was his comeback from seven down after 19 holes in 1965 against Tony Lema, only to win at the 37th hole. Bob Charles, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Wieskopf – all Open Champions – put their names on the trophy in the 1969, 1970 and 1972 respectively, and US Open Champion Hale Irwin played in three successive finals between 1974 and 1976, winning twice. The early 1980s were dominated by Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros who won the
title three and four times respectively between 1980 and 1986. Ballesteros was later to win again in 1991 to equal Player’s record of five victories in the Championship. After 23 years without a home success, there were five British victories in a six year period between 1987 and 1992. Ian Woosnam from Wales won the title in 1987 and 1990, Scotland’s Sandy Lyle in 1988 and Nick Faldo, from England, won the title in 1989 and again in 1992. In 1993 Corey Pavin broke a spell of over a decade without an American winner by defeating Faldo at the final hole, and in 1994 Ernie Els became the first South African since Player to win the title. One day short of his 25th birthday he was also the youngest player to win since Ballesteros in 1981. In 1995 and 1996 Els maintained his unbeaten record in the Championship and became the first player to win three successive
titles, but in 1997 his run came to an end when he lost in the final to Vijay Singh. The final of the 1998 World Match Play Championship was arguably the best in the history of the event with the World No.2 Mark O’Meara coming back from four down – the best ever recovery in a final – against the World No.1 Tiger Woods to win on the final green. In 1999 O’Meara again reached the final, but this time came up against an in-form World No.3 Colin Montgomerie who went through the week at 29 under par with just four bogeys to take the title for the first time. Montgomerie also reached the final in 2000, but despite being 37 under par for the week and breaking the previous 18 hole record with an 11 under par 61 in the earlier rounds, lost to fellow British golfer Lee Westwood in a thrilling low-scoring final at the 38th hole.

Ross Fisher (center), 2009 Champion
In 2001 however, Woosnam and Padraig Harrington created even more records in an extraordinary final in which the Welshman equalled his own record of seven successive birdies and broke the front nine scoring record in 28 strokes. Harrington also equalled the championship back nine record of 30 strokes. Together they had a record 32 birdies in the final in which Woosnam came back from three down to win 2&1 and become the first player to win the title in three different decades. In 2002 Els – who scored a record 12 under par 60 in an earlier round – won his fourth title defeating the youngest ever finalist Sergio Garcia. The South African went on to win the 40th edition in 2003 to equal Player’s and Ballesteros’ joint record of five victories, claiming the record first prize of £1 million. In 2004 Els completed another hat-trick of victories to win the title for a record sixth time, but he was unable to defend his title in 2005 due to a knee injury when the US Open Champion Michael Campbell defeated Paul McGinley in the final. In 2006 Paul Casey won the title at his first attempt with a record 10&8 victory in the final against Shaun Micheel. Then in 2007 Els defeated US Open Champion Angel Cabrera in the final for a remarkable seventh title in just twelve appearances in the Championship.
In 2009 – with Volvo now at the helm – the World Match Play Championship left Wentworth for the first time in its 45 year history, moving to the glorious location of Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf and Spa in Spain. With a new sponsor and venue came a new qualification criteria and a ‘champions league’ style group format which proved a big hit with the players, spectators and media. England’s Ross Fisher beat Anthony Kim 4&3 in the final, coming through a stellar field which boasted 11 of the World’s top 30 ranked players and 11 different nationalities. Further enhancements were made to the format in 2011 for the second edition of the Volvo World Match Play, which saw the strongest ever field in the history of the Championship – now increased to 24 players – come together to challenge for the €800,000 first prize. With six of the current top ten players in the world in the field, including the world numbers 1, 2 and 3 in Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer all looking to stake their claim to the world number 1 spot, it was Ian Poulter who once again proved what a fantastic match play golfer he is, by taking the title in a memorable final against Luke Donald, eventually winning 2&1.
2012 Field South African Branden Grace will be seeking his third Volvo title of 2012 at this year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship, having already bagged the Volvo Golf Champions and the Volvo China Open. The 23 year old will be joined by 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell and 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel, as well as home favourites Sergio Garcia, Alvaro Quiros and Rafael Cabrera-Bello. Defending champion Ian Poulter, World Number Ten Justin Rose, reigning Open Champion Darren Clarke, 2010 US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, two-time Major winner Retief Goosen, 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and 2010 Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson are all confirmed for the 47th edition of the tournament. The field will be divided into eight groups of three, who will play a round-robin group format on Thursday and Friday. This will decide which 16 players progress to Saturday’s knockout stage, with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday. Full details of the 24 players taking part, as well as further event information can be found at: www.volvoingolf.com and www.europeantour.com

THE OPEN
Official Hospitality Programme is open for business at Royal Lytham & St Annes The Open Championship Official Hospitality Programme is open for business at Royal Lytham & St Annes and businesses large and small are set to use the event as an important opportunity to entertain customers and reward key staff. Few sports events match the Major golf experience where the top players in the world are on show and you have a whole day of inclusive hospitality to enjoy that helps build lasting business and workplace relationships.
by 30% year-on-year. The top two on course restaurants are located in a new fairway edge, double-deck, pavilion on the 15th hole at Lytham, sharing this prime viewing position with a complex of corporate chalets. Also new for 2012 a bistro style restaurant in the busy tented village that is proving popular with smaller businesses and golf fans treating themselves to a packaged day out at golf’s original major.
While for the wider business economy of the North West the event will deliver a £90 million economic boost, a fact that is not lost on Lancashire County Council Chief Executive, Phil Halsall,
The £2m investment is made up of the new double-deck pavilion, enhanced event TV and leaderboard information, a commitment to sourcing local produce and higher hospitality staff levels. The Open Championship Official Hospitality programme is the only provider of on course facilities and makes a significant financial contribution to grassroots golf development programmes in the North West.
“The Open this year will be the Championship’s third visit to the North West in just seven years. In hard times the cash injection that comes with hosting the event can make a real difference to the economic outlook of the region”. For those thinking of buying a hospitality package time is running short. The facilities on course have benefited from a £2m investment and combined package sales for this year’s Championship (18-22 July 2012) have surged
Commenting on the marked increase in package sales Open Championship Official Hospitality Programme Director, Brett Tonkyn said: “We have had a great response from businesses to our new offer at The Open with people reacting positively to the enhanced facilities
and recognising the fact that golf gives more quality time with customers and colleagues than any other sport.” “A further rush of sales is anticipated in the post Easter period and already private chalets for 30 and 50 people and the bistro style Open Champions Restaurant are sold out for Open Championship Friday,” added Tonkyn. Packages at The Open range from £250 to £599 per person and include priority parking, fast track lanes at paygates and catering options that range from bistro bar to fine dining. All restaurants and chalets feature Open Championship TV with rolling leaderboard information, are air-conditioned and have private washroom facilities. FASHION
GOLFINO www.golfino.com
“The White Label golfer is young or at least is young at heart and uncompromising in his or her attitude to the game.”
The GOLFINO Collection modules (themes) are presented under the three different labels White, Green and Black from autumn 2011. With this GOLFINO’s USP remains, for all collections, the strong mix between hightech-function and carefully balanced, elegant fashion. The focus point is different from label to label. The golfing world has not just grown stronger in the last few years, but it has also become more diverse. As Europe’s no.1 for golf wear GOLFINO structures its choice accordingly. The core of the collection is the Green Label, the elegant golf wear for ambitious golfers, which is at home in the resorts of this world. Green Label offers optimal comfort on the
course and an acute taste in 25 years of established GOLFINO tradition, with which one can also make a great figure in the club house. With GOLFINO’s White Label the active sportiness is the focus point (Performance Wear). The White Label golfer is young or at least is young at heart and uncompromising in his or her attitude to the game. So that not just new drivers, club heads or golf balls are incorporated into their (golfing)life, but also technical golf wear of the highest quality. That means looking cool is not just a minor matter. Black Label stands for premium casual wear, which interprets the newest trends in sport
and gives one an insight in to the exclusive world of golf. This fashion is not necessarily there to be worn on the golf course but rather internationally and cosmopolitan and on the Bond Street or the Via Montenapoleone at home. This is where the ambitious customer feels addressed, for whom a trendy look is part of their lifestyle, golfer or not. All of the collections are structured into modules (themes) from 15 to 20 articles, from hats to socks, which enables the coordination of outfits. Solely in the White Label half modules are offered, which focus on a special group of high-tech-articles. Visit: www.golfino.com

Alcaidesa Links
Facilities Driving range, Putting green, Golf Lessons, Buggies, Clubhouse, Restaurant
Requirements Handicap Limit: Men 28, Ladies 36 Soft spikes only
The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are
the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually anywhere on the course. Future golfers practise their art at our Golf Academy whilst the experienced players work at improving their game. Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. Thanks to Dave Thomas, the famous golf course designer, this golf course is now the best setting for any type of golf championship. Heathland Course 18 holes, Par 72 • 6373 • 6047 • 5272 H ole

The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean
sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards. The New Clubhouse: Standing majestically on the highest point of the resort offering unbeatable views, the avant-garde architecture and 3000m² surface area has set a new benchmark - a fine example of how to blend space and the Andalusian style. The design the Clubhouse takes into account the spectacular surroundings of Alcaidesa. Open to the countryside, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity.

Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional. Opened in 1991, and designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the Old Course is rarely outside the top 5 courses in Spain. The first 9 holes wind through Cork Oaks whilst the back 9
are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play. The San Roque Club is almost unmatched for scenery & elegance. Membership is about exclusivity and the sense of belonging to a family of privileged golfers benefitting from the unique experience the club has to offer. The natural beauty of the area, historic clubhouse, two championship 18 hole courses, equestrian centre, tennis and padel courts, gymnasium and renowned Japanese Restaurant Kamakura make it one of Spain’s top clubs.

Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years – the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. It is a challenge for low handicap golfers, but with five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course, it is also possible for higher handicap players to
enjoy. Nevertheless, the course is designed to reward canny tactics & skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard 4 of the greens, also defended by more than 100 bunkers. Kamakura Restaurant & Deluxe Take Away: Probably the best Japanese restaurant in Spain. Its superb cuisine is only surpassed by the authentic Japanese architecture. Bar Jerez: A meeting point for, members and visitors alike, who may enjoy a morning coffee, an afternoon snack or an evening drink on the terrace which looks on to the Old Course. Weddings & Banqueting: In the Bolero Restaurant & Fountain Terraces.

La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience.
The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop. Signature Hole: Hole 17. Par 4. A test even to players of the highest level. A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships
- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

The objective of Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest.

members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace. Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water.

18 holes of peaceful undulating Spanish countryside boasting stunning sea views from many areas of the course, Estepona Golf provides a fair test enjoyed by players of all standards. Renowned for their superb, consistent putting surfaces, the course features a wide variety of holes. The clubhouse has recently benefited from a €400,000 renovation, where a superb selection of multinational food, wine and drinks are

Signature Hole: Hole 10. Par 4. A beautiful downhill short par 4 with the green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe, however you may feel that at only 250 meters downhill and the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!
Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -
but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes
including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience. Signature Holes: Hole 3. Par 4. Possibly one of the most beautiful holes on the course, with a large lake and raised green. Hole 13. Par 5. Considered the best hole on the course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean. Complicating matters is a stream running along the right side. Problem-free green.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales
Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a
good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. In perfect interplay with the landscape outside -one of the most exclusive areas in Marbella- the art deco interior is like a harbinger of what you can find on the menu.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water.
The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed. This is a family orientated club, where all golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied
tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.
Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,
even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging
course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.
Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.
Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.
No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and
beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best
courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.
Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic
Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
