A Warm Welcome to The Irish Golf Guide Welcome to the fourth issue of The Irish Golf Guide. This magazine has been designed to help the local and National golfer in selecting and finding the course they wish to play in Ireland. It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit. The Irish Golf Guide has been brought to you by the people who publish the Costa del Sol Golf Guide in Spain, and the North West Golf Guide, and Yorkshire Golf Guide in the UK. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving a similar success in the North of England. This bi-monthly magazine contains in depth reviews of Golf Clubs, Local and International News items, and special promotions. A select number of courses each issue have editorial’s describing the course, the facilities and signature holes and contain the directions to

the course. These editorials are the chance for each club to highlight itself and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period. The magazine is listed in alphabetical order, with the showcase courses being colour coded by the areas they are in. These areas are Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. The full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine containing the address, phone number, email and website of every golf course in Ireland. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels from professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing calendar of events in Ireland for 2011 and beyond. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, and select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from the start of October. Happy golfing from all at the Irish Golf Guide!

The K Club A Golfer’s Paradise!

The Kildare Hotel and Country Club, affectionately known as The K Club, drew international acclaim when it hosted the 36th Ryder Cup in September 2006. Already a well known golfing destination having hosted 13 Smurfit European Opens (1991 – 2007), the eyes of the world were drawn to this magnificent resort to see the who’s who of the global golfing world take their place, centre stage on the Arnold Palmer designed Ryder Cup Course.

The Palmer Ryder Cup Course is recognised as one of Europe’s most spectacular courses, challenging and dramatic, the layout and design takes your breath away. At every turn, fairway, cascading water feature or leafy, verdant space a challenge ensues. The 7,350 Ryder course is set around the mighty River Liffey which flows through the 550 acre lush Kildare estate. Mature indigenous Irish trees, carve their way around the fairways, towering over head, arms outstretched just waiting to catch a ball which may have made its way a little off course. Meanwhile, numerous water hazards and ‘beach-like’ bunkers lap the waters edge. Greens are lightening

fast and too much action on many of the greens could lead you to a ‘watery grave’! The walk through the course is a true joy, a myriad of land marks can be spotted throughout, adding interest and surprises at every stage, a quaint 19th century iron bridge at the 16th provides players with a safe passage to an emerald island which is hugged by two watery arms of the River Liffey, while the ruins of an ancient church can be spotted as you approach the 13th. Views of ‘Straffan House’, the hotel itself can be seen through the trees at the 17th. Dating back

to 1832, Ireland’s first AA Five Red Star Property is the original home of classic Irish hospitality and is just the place to sit and relax tired, golfing bones. The hotel was awarded the prestigious title of, AA Hotel of the Year for 2010/2011 and is testament to the management’s continual commitment to delivering the highest possible standards in product and service. Not content with creating one internationally acclaimed Championship course, Dr. Michael Smurfit called Arnold Palmer once again to design a second, stunning 18 hole course. The Palmer Smurfit Course is every bit as challenging as the Palmer Ryder Cup course.

The Irish Golf Guide

While the Palmer Ryder Cup Course is generally described as a mature parkland course, the Palmer Smurfit Course is a surprisingly linkstyle course. Honey coloured grasses frame the fairways, rustling in the wind as it sweeps across steep bunkers, and meticulously contoured putting surfaces. Recently the rough has been cut back quite a lot in order to lower the level of difficulty, the secret here is to keep on the straight and avoid the rough at all costs, some imaginative play will see you richly rewarded. A combination of doglegs skirt the water’s edge on the 5th and 6th hole leading up to the breathtaking signature hole, the almighty 7th. On the Palmer Smurfit Course the 7th is a long and genuine three shotter. The magnetic feature is a ‘Swallow Quarry’, a

vast man made rock face that rises some 60 feet out of a glorious lake. A series of waterfalls cascade the water hazard but its beauty belies its treachery and players are well advised to admire the view from the centre of the fairway! As on the Palmer Course Ryder Cup Course, the 18th is a Par 5, tempting the player to make a go for the green in two. The hole sweeps down and curves from left to right but beware, a cluster of bunkers guard the right edge of the fairway, a mistake here could be fatal as the approach to the finish must be performed on an island green. There are a number of exciting packages and golf events coming up at The K Club over the coming months and some of these include,

The Ultimate Golf Experience, The Ryder Cup Experience, The Titleist Summer Series and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Golf Classic. Both courses are tantalising, challenging and have a degree of difficult to suit all levels. With two championship courses, offering 36 of the most exciting and dramatic holes in Europe, golf at The K Club is a truly unique experience. The K Club also includes a luxurious resort spa, fishing on the River Liffey and a selection of dining experiences. McIlroy & Clarke Awarded Honorary Life Membership Major Champions Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy have been presented with European golf’s highest award of Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour, following in the recent footsteps of their Northern Irish compatriot and fellow Major winner Graeme McDowell.

The pair each received an Honorary Life Membership card from George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, at the Pro-Am on the eve of the Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. The ceremony was conducted on the first tee at Killarney in the presence of Ireland’s Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, an enthusiastic golfer and a member of McIlroy’s Pro-Am team which also included the US Open Champion’s father, Gerry. McIlroy triumphed in spectacular style at the US Open Championship in June before Clarke produced a links masterclass to win The Open Championship at Royal St George’s the following month, continuing a stunning spell for Northern Irish golf. Both famous trophies were on display on the first tee as the players were inducted into an exclusive club as Honorary Life Members of the Tour. McDowell set the ball rolling 14 months ago when he won the US Open at Pebble Beach, and his victory inspired his countryman and close friend McIlroy to emulate him in the same event a year later at Congressional Country Club. The 22 year old won by an incredible eight shots to become the second youngest European Major Champion in history,

and he broke numerous records with his low scoring en route to lifting the trophy. A month later, 42 year old Clarke rolled back the years with a vintage display of links golf in, at times, testing weather conditions to hold off the challenges of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson and claim his first Major. O’Grady said: “It is a privilege to honour Rory and Darren with the highest award our Tour can bestow, and both fully deserve it after their marvellous achievements, which have given all of us at The European Tour such pride and pleasure. “Rory’s victory in the US Open was the complete performance and remarkable for someone so young, while Darren’s win at his 20th attempt at Royal St George’s only a month later was simply thrilling. Both players are strong supporters of The European Tour and we are delighted to witness this truly magnificent period for golf in Northern Ireland.” Clarke and McIlroy will contest the €1.5 million Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland this week, as will three more Major Champions in McDowell, Irishman Padraig Harrington and Michael Campbell of New Zealand.

EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS

“The finest moment of Darren Clarke’s career came in July 2011 when he won The Open Championship by three shots at Royal St George’s, holding off Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to lift the Claret Jug.”

Rory McIlroy’s European Tour Biography Rewrote the record books at the 2011 US Open by winning at Congressional Country Club with the lowest score in history, 16 under par. The Northern Irishman had a stunning 65 to lead after the first round, and he stayed way out in front over the next three rounds, producing a masterclass to finish eight shots clear of runner-up Jason Day. The victory was just two months after he came agonisingly close to winning his first Major at the Masters Tournament, where he took a four shot lead into the final round, only to shoot 80 and finish ten shots behind champion Charl Schwartzel. Underlined his reputation as one of the game’s most exciting young players in 2010, making his Ryder Cup debut, being in contention in two Major Championships and clinching his maiden US PGA Tour title. Enjoyed a fine finish to the season to come 13th in The Race to Dubai, not quite managing the heights of the season before, when he narrowly missed out on becoming the youngest player to win the Harry Vardon Trophy since Seve Ballesteros in 1976 as Lee Westwood pipped him to the title. However, he won the 2010 Quail Hollow Championship in the United States in May 2010, blitzing through the final round in a course record 62 to beat Phil Mickelson by four shots. Also finished tied third in both The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship, his opening 63 in the former at St Andrews the lowest first round

in the history of the tournament. Became the second 20 year old to break into the world’s top ten, after Sergio Garcia, and maintained his position throughout 2010. Hit a 40 yard drive at the age of two and later enjoyed a glittering amateur career during which he reached the top of the World Amateur Rankings and became the youngest winner of the prestigious West of Ireland and Irish Closed Championship, in 2005. Caught the eye with a superb opening 68 in The 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the only bogey-free round of the day, and finished third in his second event as a professional, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. That earned him enough money to assure his place in the top 115 to be the then youngest and quickest Affiliate Member to secure his card – in just two events. Represented Europe at the 2004 Junior Ryder Cup and elevated to the real thing at The Celtic Manor Resort in October 2010, where he won two points out of four, including a crucial half in the singles against Stewart Cink on the final day. Darren Clarke’s European Tour Biography The finest moment of his career came in July 2011 when he won The Open Championship by three shots at Royal St George’s, holding off Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to lift the Claret Jug. Produced a masterclass of links golf in at times awful conditions to finish five under par and thrill the crowds. It came two months after he claimed his 13th European Tour victory at the 2011

Iberdrola Open, holding off Chris Wood and David Lynn to win by three shots. Enjoyed a fruitful 2010 season which yielded two runner-up finishes – at the Barclays Scottish Open and the Joburg Open. Was also an instrumental part of Europe’s victory in The 2010 Ryder Cup, where he was one of Captain Colin Montgomerie’s Vice Captains. Has a habit of setting new records. In the 1999 European Open he became the first player on The European Tour to shoot 60 for a second time, having achieved it first in the 1992 European Monte Carlo Open, and in 2001 he became the first Irishman to win on home soil since John O’Leary in 1982, when he captured the European Open. In 2002 he became the first player to win the English Open three times and in 2003 became the first player apart from Tiger Woods to capture more than one World Golf Championship title. In 2006 his wife, Heather, sadly lost her battle with cancer, but three weeks later he was picked as one of the wild cards for The Ryder Cup at The K Club and in an emotionally charged week produced a superb performance, winning all three of his matches. A dedicated worker for charity, he organised a special Pro-Am at Portmarnock in September 1998 in aid of the victims of the Omagh bombing tragedy and set up his own Darren Clarke Foundation, which not only helps further the development of junior golf in Ireland, but also now raises money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

IRISH TALENT

Lisa Maguire European Women’s Amateur Champion 2011 Lisa Maguire continued the amazing run of Irish golfing success when she lifted the European Women’s Amateur individual title in difficult conditions in the Netherlands at the end of July.

Just six days after Darren Clarke lifted the Claret Jug as winner of the British Open at Sandwich, the 16-year-old from Ballyconnell in Co Cavan was striking gold over the Noordwijkse course. She became the first Irish winner of this prestigious tournament since it was inaugurated in 1986. “My twin sister, Leona, had already won twice this year,” Lisa said. “In Portugal and in Ireland. I had only one victory, in the Spanish Amateur. So we’re even now. And this European title was the one I really wanted.” Remarkably, Stephanie Meadow of Royal Portrush produced one of the best final rounds to grab the silver medal. Leona finished fourth.

Lisa found the windy conditions tough on Saturday and stumbled a little, but never seriously looked in danger of surrendering her hard-earned advantage. “It was tough,” Lisa added. “It was one of the toughest days ever on a golf course. I knew that making as many pars as possible was going to be the key today. Especially when Charlotte came a bit closer. But I was able to pull it off.” She went into the final round fours strokes clear of the field but dropped a stroke on the opening hole. Later she extended her lead to eight, but was pegged back to three at one stage.Out in 38, Lisa had one hand on the trophy. She did bogey 10 and 13, but

her rivals were also dropping shots which meant she remained in pole position. And in the end the teenage wonder could afford a double-bogey on the closing hole and post a homeward half of 41 and still win by four strokes. Lisa ended with a 72-hole aggregate of 293 – five over par – after rounds of 73, 68, 73 and 79. In her final round she had 11 pars, four bogeys and three birdies. Leona Maguire ended on 12 over par, just two strokes behind the bronze medallist Charlotte Kring Lorentzen.

EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS

Paul McGinley 500 Not Out Paul McGinley joined an illustrious group at the Barclays Scottish Open in July, when he became just the 20th player to make 500 European Tour appearances.

The 44 year old from Dublin – who was presented with an engraved silver ice bucket by European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady to mark the occasion – is the third Irishman to reach the landmark, following in the footsteps of Eamonn Darcy, who made 610 appearances, and Des Smyth, veteran of 594 European Tour events. McGinley’s first appearance was in the 1989 Irish Open as an amateur and he won his European Tour card at the 1991 Qualifying School, making his debut as a professional in the 1992 Johnnie Walker Asian Classic. In the subsequent 19 years he has amassed more than €10million in prize money and

won four European Tour titles, his first victory coming in the 1996 Hohe Brücke Open in Austria. He went on to capture the Oki Pro-Am the following the year in Madrid before defeating Paul Lawrie and Darren Lee in a play-off at the 2001 Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open. His fourth and most significant career victory came in the 2005 season ending Volvo Masters, when he held off the challenge of Spaniard Sergio Garcia at Valderrama. “The Volvo Masters was probably my biggest win and is a great highlight of my career,” he said.” I’d lost to Michael Campbell in the World Match Play final which hurt a lot so it

was great to come back and win at Valderrama a month later. Losing to Michael is the one I really regret. He had just won the US Open and I was down the whole match which was played over 36 holes and I got him back to all square with six to play and then lost, having fought my way back. Anybody’s career has highs and lows though and going on to the Volvo Masters was a definite high.” Perhaps his most notable achievement however has been his role in The Ryder Cup, where his fierce competitiveness came to the fore as he helped Europe to three consecutive victories over the United States, memorably holing the winning putt on his debut in 2002 at The Belfry.

Tiger Woods Irish Caddie for the former World No. 1? Top bagman Colin Byrne is ready to drop everything to caddie for Tiger Woods. The Dubliner recently scorched from rank outsider to second favourite with bookies Paddy Power to land the job following Woods’ sacking of Kiwi Steve Williams.

“But I’ve heard nothing. I know him obviously and we’d be on first name terms after all the years I worked for Retief Goosen.

He said: “The peripheral stuff that goes on around Tiger would be the biggest challenge.

“But I am sure he is not in a rush because I don’t think he’s going to play for a while.”

“You have to be a minder as well doing the basics of caddying but you just have to do your job.

And while he insists he’s heard nothing yet, Byrne says he’d jump at the chance to work for the 14-time major winner.

Byrne split with Italian Edoardo Molinari after the US Open and is currently enjoying some down time as he moves into a new house in Dublin.

“I had it to a degree with Retief Goosen when I worked for him in his prime but the intensity with someone like Tiger would be huge.”

Set to caddie for Irish amateur tigress Lisa Maguire at the Ladies Irish Open, Byrne said: “I’d love to do it. It would be flattering and a great challenge to work for someone that talented.

And while he’ll caddie for newly-crowned European Ladies Amateur champion Lisa Maguire in the Ladies Irish Open at Killeen Castle, he’s ready to put up the glare of the spotlight on Woods’ bag.

Woods slipped outside the world’s top 20 yesterday for the first time since 1997. Now ranked 21st, he hasn’t played since May because of knee and Achilles tendon injuries

Ireland Regional Overview

Ireland Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, and the twentieth largest island in the world. Historically, Ireland is divided into four ancient provinces, Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. There are thirtytwo counties within those provinces. For tourism the country is divided into regions which may cross over provinces. This history is reflected in the warm hospitality, underrated delicious traditional dishes, brilliant music, and beautiful landscape. Whether enjoying a morning breakfast at a B&B, downing a pint or two in a pub, experiencing the local artists, or hiking along a seaside cliff, it is hard not to feel a part of the dramatic culture and rich history that is Ireland. Throughout the entire island of Ireland there are thousands of lakes and rivers that are natural wonders. In addition, Ireland’s ancient past makes it an archeological paradise, with many sites dating back thousands of years. There is so much to

explore and experience, that no matter where you travel in Ireland, it will be a fantastic exploration, with unsurpassed hospitality. The scenery is ever changing, simply spectacular, and literally unfolds before your eyes. All over Ireland you can enjoy the outdoors from fishing to golf, horse riding to water sports. Local eateries offer a wide range of food from simple to fine dining. However, whether plain or fancy, the fare is usually fresh, often home grown, and absolutely fantastic. Ireland is a golfer’s paradise - if you are prepared for changing weather, strong winds and challenging courses. The older Irish courses are legend, the new ones getting there. Choosing the perfect courses for a golfing tour of Ireland is a hard task, that is why The Irish Golf Guide is your perfect partner for choosing the course that is right for you. Whether you want famous links courses, classic parkland or luxurious golf resorts, Ireland has it all.

Adare Manor Golf Club

Telephone: 061 396204 info@adaremanorgolfclub.com www.adaremanorgolfclub.com

How to Find When you pass the Lantern Lodge Roundabout on the N21 to Adare, you can see the glf course on the left through the trees. The entrance is further on before you cross the bridge over the River Maigue.

Adare Manor Golf Club, one of the hidden jewels in the Irish golfing firmament, was established in 1900 when the 4th Earl of Dunraven invited the Scottish professional, Ben Sayers, to come over and lay out a nine hole course on the picturesque part of his vast estate. Our club has a proud tradition of hospitality and friendliness. Our 18-hole parkland golf course provides an historic Irish golfing experience. The Desmond Castle (1200 ad) is a magnificent backdrop to the 1st and 15th greens, while the ruins of the Franciscan Abbey (1464 ad) dominate the centre of the course.

Adare Manor Golf Club

Golfing societies and all visitors are very welcome, and will find the tree-lined fairways a serious golfing challenge. Signature Hole: No 18 is a shortish par 4 but needs careful management. Firstly, you drive through a narrow gap between trees as far as the dogleg. Then you must steer a clear course between the graveyard along your right and trees guarding the castle on the left in order to reach an uphill green. Even if you hit the green in 2 shots your par is not guaranteed - a large green sloping from right to left and from top to bottom.

A very early visitor to the course was Bernard Darwin, the first recognised golf correspondent. Writing in 1907, after savouring its delights, he wrote: ‘Apart from it extraordinary beauty and the unique character of its hazards, Adare is quite out or the ordinary run of courses, it is all rather in miniature, and there is something wonderfully attractive in an occasional round on a course of this kind after a spell of battling with the breeze over long seaside links’.

This traditional links was originally formed by Hawtree & Taylor and has evolved with the aid of inputs from Eddie Hackett and in recent times Eddie Connaughton. The links has been described as a hidden jewel and the

Southern Region of the Irish PGA held their 2001 and 2002 Championships on this links. Signature Hole Hole 2, Par 4, ‘The Graveyard’ This is a stiff test as the green is unsighted from the tee due to a large dune. It is best to drive to the left of the fairway which avoids heavy rough on right and opens up a good view of the green. Difficult undulations on the green make this a tough par 4 and well worthy of its Index 6. The name derives from the distant past when it was an animal graveyard. Designer and five times (5) Open Champion J H Taylor considered this hole to be the best test of golf on the course.

Ashbourne

From Ashbourne Village:
Turn at Ashbourne House Hotel. Follow road for approx. 1 mile. Course Entrance on left just after the skew-backed bridge. From M50:
Take exit for N2 (Derry/ Ashbourne). Take exit 3 (signposted for Ashbourne/Ratoath/Swords). At roundabout take third exit (road to Swords). Take 1st left turn - there is a sign for the course at the junction. You will see the course on your right in a matter of seconds. From Airport:
Follow signs for M1 South. On M1 take exit for M50. Follow instructions above. Ashbourne Golf Club is a fine parkland layout designed by Declan Branigan Design with Ryder Cup Vice-Captain Des Smyth. Measuring 5,869 meters from the Championship tees, the par 71 course is not long by today’s standards, but it still proves to be a stern test of golf. The combination of Broadmeadow River and the five man-made lakes come into play on thirteen holes. The difficulty of the layout is further enhanced by a number of strategically positioned trees. The combination of a fine golf course and a very friendly atmosphere in our clubhouse

makes Ashbourne Golf Club a perfect venue for a casual round or a society outing. The facilities have been improved with the opening of our new restaurant by award winning chef Keith Kenny. Golfers and nongolfers alike can enjoy Keith’s fine food in the friendly atmosphere of the bar or the more formal setting of the restaurant. Signature Hole: Hole 12, Par 4, 373 Metres A fantastic hole that brings the river into play from the tee and again on the approach. Steely nerves are required even if the golfer decides to lay up on their second shot. A classic risk and reward Par 4.

Beautifully designed, the course exploits the natural splendour of its surroundings, affording from its vantage points and from the modern strategically appointed clubhouse, with panoramic views of the lake and its wooded islands. Its tree-lined fairways and undulating terrain make it a true test of golf for all standards of golfer.

Athlone Golf Club has hosted many provincial and national championships, including the All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals in 1998. Also, in 2007, the All Ireland Mixed and All Ireland Ladies Championships were held here. Signature Hole: 13th, 396m par 4. A severe dogleg right to left, you drive over “the saddle” into a valley. The braver you are with your tee shot, the shorter the blind approach to the relatively small green, protected by a bunker to the left and mounds and hollows to the right. A par is a great score on any day. Anything higher and you will want to go back and play it again… but differently!

Our course, which has been in play since June, 2003, was designed by Des Smyth (2006 Ryder Cup Vice-Captain) and Declan Brannigan and is a striking example of modern design with old style golfing values. It provides the perfect environment for all golfers. The design strategy involved a tiered effect for the

fairways, thereby negating to a large degree the effect of the sloping site on which the course was constructed. As a result a large number of the holes are relatively flat. The course was constructed using modern construction methods and the sand based USGA specification greens provide wonderful putting surfaces all year round. The choice of three tees on each hole provides the player with three different tests of golf. The Blue tees total 5990 metres in length, with the white measuring 5645 metres and the yellow tees 5188 metres.

Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club Newmarket-on-Fergus Clare

Dromoland Castle

Telephone:+353 061 368144 sales@dromoland.ie www.dromoland.ie

How to Find Dromoland Castle is ideally located 8 miles from Shannon Airport in Clare just outside Newmarket on Fergus. The proximity of this beautiful castle hotel in Clare Ireland to other major cities in the South /South West of Ireland make it an ideal location for touring: 19 miles from Limerick city, 48 miles from Galway city, 80 miles from Cork city and 88 miles from Killarney.

Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club has been in existence since 1962 and golf has been played for 43 years over the lush rolling tree lined landscape that drains into Dromoland Lough with the Castle as a backdrop. The course was entirely revamped in 2004 at a cost of over €5million, and has subsequently been refined and polished over the following few years. The Course architects, Ron Kirby and the late JB Carr teamed up again following their success at the Old Head of Kinsale. The result is nothing short of spectacular and places Dromoland at the vanguard of “must play” golf destinations on the island of Ireland.

Already the course has earned a reputation equalling that of Adare and Mount Juliet and the quality of the greens and tees is compared very favourably to the very best worldwide. Dromoland Castle golf resort is one of the finest 5 star hotels in Ireland and now has a golf course to equal the splendour of the setting. Visitors to the course have eloquently described it as “the Augusta of Ireland”. Our signature hole is the par 3, 7th at 179 yards. Large lake vista with Dromoland castle as a background, well shaped green with green side bunker on the right and a feature pond short and left of the green.

There are few places in the world that encapsulate the true spirit of the game of golf like Druids Heath. The Mountains, Sea and rolling Irish Countryside provide stunning vistas throughout your round. The sea breeze calls for shot-making skills and imagination from the golfer.

In the words of Pat Ruddy “Druids Heath affords the player the opportunity to stride-out in a place which is invigorating to both body and soul with the ever present sea breezes adding greatly to a sporting challenge, which is quite difficult to concentrate on as the eye wanders eagerly fifty miles out to sea, twenty miles southwards over an unspoiled, rolling pastoral scene to Wicklow Head and inland to the Wicklow Mountains. Dull would he be of soul who would allow a few stray shots spoil a day in such a blessed spot”. Venue for the 2006 Irish PGA Championship, Druids Heath has played host to many of the worlds leading Tour Players.

From the Airport merge onto M50 Southbound. At exit 12, take left slip road left to Knocklyon/Ballyboden/Firhouse. Go straight through two roundabouts. At 3rd roundabout take last exit onto Ballyboden Road. Keep straight onto R116 Edmondstown is on left hand side. From Dublin/Christchurch Place N81. Turn left to stay on N81/Nicholas Street. Keep straight onto R114. Turn left onto Rathfarnham Road. Turn right onto R115/ Willbrook Road. At roundabout, take 2nd exit . Keep straight onto R116 Edmondstown is on left hand side. Possessing a fair but testing reputation, Edmondstown Golf Club, in delightful environs in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains 7 miles to the south and west of the city centre, is a well maintained and manicured course in elevated deciduous parkland. Major focal points of the course are the secluded 4th and 6th holes, which are isolated from the remainder of the course by a meandering stream, drawing the golfer into a difficult shot to the green; indeed the aforementioned 6th remains one of the best inland par fours in Ireland. The Club plays host to many outings during

the year and can provide first class food and drink in a friendly atmosphere. It is this friendliness which members cherish among themselves and which ensures that visitors are made to feel welcome. Signature Hole: Hole 6 - Par 4 - 382 Metres The elevated tee yields a beautiful view of this well protected green, surrounded by river (front), as well as bunkers and ponds. But don’t spend too much time enjoying the scenery. Try to leave approach short of pin, as the green slopes strongly from back to front. Par is a good score, as danger lurks around every turn...

The 200 acre estate can be found just 7km (4 miles) from Waterford City in the heart of Ireland’s sunny South East. The course situated on the banks of the River Suir, has been perfectly designed into a wonderful landscape. Its design uses the combination of mature trees, flowing terrain and the

beautiful picturesque setting to fine effect. With a championship yardage of 6674 yards, it ensures that all level of golfer will be tested but at the same time enjoy the challenge of negotiating a good score at Faithlegg. Signature Hole: 16th Par 3 166yards - “Olivia’s Garden”. With mature trees left and right creating a “tunnel effect” tee shot, adds not only beauty to the hole but also adds to the difficulty of the shot being played into a very shallow green. Guarded by a well-positioned sand trap at the front and another, which creeps around the right hand side of the green, catching any off hit tee shots with great ease!

From Cork Airport Take the E30 as far as the Cobh Exit, approximately nine miles (15 kilometres) east of Cork. Follow the R264 towards Cobh for approximately two miles (three kilometres). Follow signs for Fota Island Golf Club and the resort is on the left.

Fota Island Golf Club is just a few minutes drive from Cork City’s international airport. Located in the heart of a 780 acre estate which is included in “The Inventory of Outstanding Landscapes in Ireland”. The splendid woodlands are woven into three challenging championship courses which are very much in the traditional mode, featuring strategically placed bunkers and undulating putting surfaces. The Deerpark Course at Fota Island Golf Club with its receptive greens and strategic bunkering impresses even the most experienced professionals. The Deerpark was proud to host the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002.

The Belvelly Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 72 course stretching over 7121 yards from the championship tees, includes the new ninehole layout also developed by Jeff Howes. The Barryscourt Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 73 course, also incorporates the new nine-hole layout. Signature Hole: Hole 10, Deerpark Course. A lovely down hill par 5, needs a tee shot down the right side of the fairway to comfortably reach this green in 2. The second shot is very dangerous to the green, with water short right and over the back. A good risk reward hole.

GALWAY BAY

How to Find

The Natural water hazard is the Atlantic Ocean; such is the dramatic backdrop to this Par 72 PGA Championship 18 hole golf course that is Galway Bay Golf Resort. When designing the course, former Ryder Cup and World Cup golfer Christy O’Connor Jnr superbly blended the stunning backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged curves of the Atlantic coastline with gentle undulating mounding along the fairways, water hazards, concealed bunkers and highly acclaimed putting surfaces. With variable wind speed and directions this Championship Galway golf course plays

differently each day posing a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicap golfers, yet it is a true and fair test of golf. After your round you can savour the moment with fond memories in the clubhouse looking out on the spectacular course as it winds its way along the shoreline of Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Signature Hole: Hole 14. The par 5 14th is the signature hole playing 555 yards from the tips. The risk and reward left to right dog leg layout allows those who are able to cut the corner out over the bay to easily reach the green in two.

Hollywood Lakes Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Ballyboughal village, in North County Dublin. It lies within a 20 minute drive from Dublin Airport. Consequently, it is ideally located for golfers travelling from abroad.

Combine this element of the design with a multitude of trees and it is easy to see where the challenge emanates from. A full bar and catering service is available in the friendly atmosphere of the clubhouse.

Designed by Mel Flanagan, who made major improvements during 2002, this 18-hole parkland golf course measures 6707 yards from the championship tees including a 641 yard par 5 and comprises a par of 72. This course is truly a test for every category of golfer. Currently there are 11 lakes and water features that sees water impact on 9 out of the 18 holes.

Our signature hole in most members’ eyes would be our 8th. Measuring just 379 yards it is a dog leg left and its degree of difficulty has increased since the introduction of a new bunker to the left of the green just in front of the water. A three wood off the tee leaves a mid-iron to a green which slopes from back to front and no matter where you are on the green you will have a very slick putt.

Killarney

On leaving Cork Airport: Follow the signs Cork N27. Drive down hill towards the city until Junction with N25 (South Ring). Take the slip road before the Roundabout signposted Killarney, West Cork. Continue on this road (N22), bypassing Ballincollig. On arrival in Killarney, at the roundabout, take the 2nd exit towards Tralee and Limerick. At the roundabout, drive straight through (signpost for Killorglin) and right again at the next roundabout, still heading for Killorglin. The Club is approx 1km on this road and the entrance is on the left.

The Golf & Fishing Club Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has a spectacular lakeside location next to the National Park approximately 3 km from Killarney town centre on the Killorglin - Ring of Kerry Road. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is one of the oldest, well established and internationally recognised Clubs in Ireland. It has a membership of over 1,700 members from all over the world and the Club’s location is one of the most enviable in the World. With 3 Championship courses the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club can offer 3 totally unique options and challenges to the golfer.

The Killeen course is very much the flagship course at the club. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide an imposing backdrop to this Championship course. Reopened in June 2006 the course is slightly longer with faster greens that have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. At 6564 metres it will challenge long hitters with accuracy being vital as there is water on virtually every hole. Nick Faldo on winning The Irish Open in 1991 was one of only three players to finish under par. The challenging golf is matched by the spectacular views with the 10th being a firm favourite where you are playing virtually onto the lake.

Lackabane is the newest of the three courses at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. This Parkland course opened officially for play

in 2000. Lakes and streams are a feature throughout the length and breadth of the course, adding beauty and danger in equal measure. At 6410 metres off the very back tees the long game will be tested to the full, as competitors in the 2002 Ladies Irish Open and the European Ryder Cup Challenge Tour participants experienced in 2005. Signature Hole: Mahony’s Point the shortest of the three courses at 6,800 yards is a lakeside course with spectacular views including the famous, breathtaking 18th described by Gene Sarazen as “one of the most memorable holes in the world”.

Monkstown Golf Club rejoices in its distinguished history and its unique setting overlooking Cork’s glorious harbour.
The antiquity of the site is evoked by the ruins of the old castle which provided the members with a distinctive club-house before the ravages of time turned the grand old building into an un-inhabitable place.

Signature Hole 16th hole, Par 3, 172 metres. Stunning shot over water to a back drop of mature trees

The shell that remains is a poignant reminder of past glories and of the once-proud building that enhanced such a glorious and significant site when it was built in 1636. It is fitting that its outline should form the crest of a club that was founded in 1908.

Mount Juliet Golf Course opened in 1991 with a match featuring golfing legends Christy O’Connor Snr. and Jack Nicklaus. The beautiful and challenging Mount Juliet golf course has established itself as a premier golfing venue for Top Professionals and leisure golfers worldwide. Chosen as the first and only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in Ireland, the “Golden Bear” was meticulous and pain-staking in his design and overseeing of the construction of his great creation. In preparation for the WGC - American Express Golf Championship that was held here in September 2002 and again in 2004,

the Jack Nicklaus design team instigated some extensions and new features to the course, showing Mount Juliet’s continued pursuit of golfing excellence. Signature Holes: Feature holes on Mount Juliet Golf Course include the stunning 3rd hole, a par 3 from an elevated tee to a green guarded by a natural stream and lake... one that golfers always remember. Also the par 5, 10th hole with its copse of trees which tests the golfers strategy. The final hole, a long par 4 with water all down the left and a narrow approach to the green has decided many a tournament result.

How to Find

SeaPoint

From Dublin: Get onto the M1 heading North and continue through the Toll Plaza and across the Boyne Suspension Bridge. Take the Drogheda North Exit. Then take the right hand exit (Monasterboice) from the first roundabout. Go straight at next roundabout. At the 3rd roundabout take the first left for the Monasterboice exit. Continue on this road and follow the signs to Termonfeckin. When you arrive in Termonfeckin you will be opposite a church. Turn left and cross a hump back bridge. Take the next right which will be signposted for Seapoint Golf Club which is 1 mile further on the right hand side. The challenge at Seapoint begins from the first tee embarking onto a testing 7,150 yard Par 72 course set on 260 acres of magnificent links land. There is an abundance of natural vegetation and wonderful dunes awaiting any errant shot. Every club in the bag is required to play this championship course. Progress through a front nine with a slightly heath land feel with an abundance of gorse and mature tress lining the boundary of the course. Water comes into play on 5 of the holes. The back nine drift close to the sea and are characterised by uneven fairways, thick rough and deep bunkers, requiring

accuracy both off the tee and into the greens. Continuing home to the clubhouse presents little time to relax with the last three holes weaving through dunes and distracting the golfer with panoramic views and a strong sea breeze - pure links enjoyment. Signature Hole: Hole 11, Par 4. Placement off the tee is key at this hole, find the left hand side of the fairway just short of the bunker and you are in prime position. Be careful with the second shot as it is uphill and players tend to come up short. This is a beautiful par 4 and you will travel a long way to find one better.

Forming part of a magnificent 300 acre estate, including 50 acres of lakes, our highly acclaimed 18-hole championship course is sensitively wrapped around the lakes and the drumlins of the County Cavan landscape. The course presents a wonderful challenge and the devilishly tricky greens present a searching examination of accurate approach play, which adds to the enjoyment factor.

The Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club has hosted some major European Challenge Tour and Irish PGA Tournaments. These include, the Buzz.com North West of Ireland Open, the Irish PGA Championship and also the Quinn Insurance PGA Charity Pro-Am, which has been held since 1997 and has now become an annual event and boasts the highest prize fund for Irish PGA Professionals.

Not surprisingly the complex has always proved very popular with visiting golf groups from all over Ireland, the UK and Europe and many return on a regular basis to sample our renowned hospitality.

Whilst every hole on the golf course is a challenge, the par 5 13th is the signature hole with its fairway hugging the shores of one of the course’s natural lakes offering a risk/reward opportunity on every shot.

There is not one ’pushover’ hole on the entire course and wind conditions can be a major factor in how the course is played. with a new state-of-the-art clubhouse and significant development to the course itself. This included the building of five new greens and eight new tee complexes. The sacred turf of the old Croke Park pitch was used to great effect in developing, strengthening and giving real definition to the back nine in St. Anne’s.

The unique setting of this famous old links, with the splendid panoramic views of Howth Head and across Dublin Bay to the Wicklow mountains, ensures a most relaxing and enjoyable game. Founded in 1921, it is a member-owned golf club. In 2003 an extensive redevelopment of the course was completed,

Hole 7, “Brent”, Par 4, 472 yards (Blue Tee). The seventh hole is surely one of the strongest Par 4’s in North County Dublin. It comes as no surprise to learn that, due to the majestic beauty of this setting, Palmer chose it to be his first and, arguably, his finest golf course in Europe.

In addition to boasting a clear view of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole, Tralee has a fully qualified resident professional, well stocked Pro shop, a comfortable restaurant & bar, and is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. How to Find

Tramore

Coming from Waterford: turn right at the second roundabout. Proceed up the hill straight through the next two roundabouts on to the Ring road. The Golf Club is about a mile along the road on the right.

Coming from the Cork road: turn right at the first roundabout. You are now on the Ring road.
Coming from the Dungarvan Coast road turn left at the first roundabout. The Club is 50 meters on your left.

The Old Course, “Championship golf at it’s finest”. It is widely accepted that in 1938 when Captain H.C.C. Tippet laid out Tramore Golf Course something special was created. Visitors over years have spoken fondly of their favourite holes and when Henry Cotton played Harry Bradshaw here in 1937 he described the Par 4, 17th hole as “one of the finest golf holes he had played”. That’s why in 2006 when course designer Jeff Howes was awarded the contract to remodel the original 18 holes it was on the strict understanding that he could only enhance what was already there. Those who are familiar with

the old course marvel at the result and all are in agreement that Jeff Howes excelled at his task. Although the Newtown 9 Hole Course is a relatively new addition at Tramore, early comments are very favorable and a round of golf on it is “Highly Recommended” Signature Holes At 344 meters the Par 4, 17th requires a good drive up the right hand side as access to the green is restricted by tall trees on the left. The elevated green is protected by a bunker at the front and trees at the rear calling for a high degree of accuracy with your second shot.

The Irish Golf Guide

Leinster Introduction

Leinster The province of Leinster takes in an area from the southern border of Northern Ireland through to the sunny south east corner of the island of Ireland, with over one and a half million people living in the vibrant, not to be missed city of Dublin and its surrounding areas alone. Leinster takes in the counties of Carlow, Dublin & Dublin City, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford & Wicklow. It has a long sea coast, stretching from Carlingford Bay in County Louth to Hook Head in County Wexford. Leinster is probably best viewed as a series of sub regions, each sub region encapsulating its own local geography, unique landscape and separate but co-joined history. From the ancient Hill of Tara and the world famous stone age site at Newgrange, at 5000 years old it is considered to be one the oldest man made structures in the world, to the vibrant and stylish city of Kilkenny and then to Wicklow, the famous

‘Garden of Ireland’, there are an amazing number of historical and fascinating places to visit for both the golfer and non-golfer alike. Dublin, it’s Capital is a county as well as a city and sprawls over a large part of this area. From the superb nightlife to the modern museums and art galleries, great little sea-side resorts along the coast, the lavish gardens of Howth Castle, or the unique and wonderful collection of Irish furniture and paintings at Malahide Castle - its all here in a city not to be missed. From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland. With plenty of great links courses such as Arklow, Seapoint and St Annes, to the large inland golf resorts of Druid’s Glen, Mount Juliet and Carton House, not forgetting the reknowned K Club near Dublin, where The Ryder Cup was won so emphatically by Europe in 2006, Leinster has plenty of variety to challenge golfers of all levels.

“From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland.”

The Irish Golf Guide

Connaught Introduction

Connaught The province of Connaught (Connacht) lies in the West of Ireland with its coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The counties of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon are within its boundary. Historically, Connaught has retained its rich Gaelic heritage and today still has communities where the Irish language is spoken. These regions are collectively called the Gaeltacht. Connaught has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland, including the spectacular mountainous landscape of Connemara. The primary business centre of Connaught, and most densely populated area, is the thriving city of Galway to the south of the province. Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland. The streets and buildings of this ancient town have many interesting features, and its position on

the edge of the Gaeltacht makes it the gateway to magnificent areas such as Connemara, Corrib country, and the Aran Islands. The city itself is a continuing centre of growth with its University, Institute of Technology, Theatres, Cathedral, Castle, Hotels, Docks, Industries as well as other interesting attractions. As for golf, the dramatic scenery and splendour of the Connaught region has created wonderful natural landscapes for golf course designers to hone their skills. Like all areas in the west of Ireland, the first obstacle to a good score is Mother Nature herself. The golfer will find that he or she will not alone have to contend with the cunning and guile of architect allied to the terrain, but must adjust for what is benignly known in local parlance as the “westerly breeze” coming straight across three thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean.

“Some of the most beautiful & unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland...”

The Irish Golf Guide

Munster Introduction

Munster Munster is the southern most province of Ireland and is home to 6 of the 32 counties – Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Wareford and Tipperary. All the counties in Munster touch the Atlantic except for Tipperary – tha largest county in Ireland. Cork is the second largest county in Ireland and is also the second largest city. Other cities in the province include Limerick and Waterford. The major towns are Tralee, Killarney, Ennis, Clonmel and Thurles. Cork has a population of over 160,000 people. Like Venice the city is built upon the waters, and Cork centre is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Cork Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee which embrace the city centre are spanned by many bridges, and this gives the city a distinctive continental air. However it is often said of Cork City that it has all the amenities of a large city, but still manages to retain its pleasant atmosphere and extreme friendliness, which you will experience on your visit. Cork is a city of

remarkable charm, and the visitor cannot fail to be captivated by its hilly streets, bumpy bridges and peaceful backwaters. Munster is a tremendously fertile area of Ireland with many major rivers including the Bandon, the Lee, the Blackwater, the Suir and the final stages of the Shannon and its spectacular Lough Derg which is a border point of Munster, Connacht and Leinster. Munster has a number of mountain ranges and includes the largest peak in Ireland - Carrauntoohil in Kerry’s majestic MacGillycuddy Reeks. Sport is almost regarded as a religion in Munster. The Gaelic Athletic Association - GAA - was formed in Thurles, Co.Tipperary and all Munster counties are passionate about their hurling and gaelic football. Munster rugby unites all the six counties and their followers and supporters are known the world over. There are golf courses to suit every golfer throughout Munster, from fine parkland courses

and resorts such as Killarney and Mahoneys’s Point in Kerry and Fota Island Golf and Country Club, Lee Valley and Monkstown in Cork. The province is also home to several spectacular and world reknowned links courses including Tralee, Waterville and Dooks in County Kerry, all situated on the wild Atlantic coast.

Ulster Introduction

Ulster From the natural wonders of the Giants Causeway and the Marble Arch caves, to the country houses and gardens of Castleward, Mount Stewart and Florencecourt, the glorious sandy beaches on the Antrim coast and the tranquil shores of Lough Erne and Strangford Lough, right across to the spectacular and rugged coastline of Donegal there is much to see and do in this varied and beautiful province of Ulster. There are the bustling and colourful cities of Belfast and Londonderry, with their many stylish bars, restaurants, hotels and many historical attractions. However, if you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, the Antrim Coast really is as impressive as its reputation suggests. It is one of the most beautiful shorelines in Ireland, winding past towering cliffs, sandy beaches, picturesque harbours and family resorts. Inland lies Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Great Britain and Ireland and the Fermanagh lakelands, sprinkled with tiny islands, wooded parks and monastic ruins.

On the west coast lies Donegal, with its breathtaking misty mountains, serene lakes and dramatic coastlines. Donegal boasts a vast rugged coastline softened regularly by a succession of beautiful beaches with golden sand and clear fresh waters. Inland, Donegal is wild and unspoilt with winding roads leading to never-ending spectacular vistas. Major attractions include Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Tory Island, Glebe House and Gallery, Colmcille Heritage Centre, Fort Dunree Military Museum and Abbey Mill Wheels. Letterkenny, County Donegal’s largest town, has a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great place to shop for everything from high street fashions to quality handcrafted goods and designer clothes - alternatively, you can relax and enjoy a coffee in one of Letterkenny’s many continental-style cafes. Seaside resorts like Bundoran provide a change of mood - if you’re looking for lively nights filled with music, song and dance, then Bundoran is the place to go.

The golf courses in Ulster contain an impressive mix of quality Parkland, Heathland and Links courses, and in Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, two world renowned golf courses along with Ballyliffin and Rosapenna in Donegal, all of which offer a spectacular links challenge to keep golfers from both sides of the Atlantic returning to these shores again and again.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
