A Warm Welcome to the first Irish Golf Guide Welcome to the first issue of the Irish Golf Guide. This magazine has been designed to help the local and National golfer in selecting and finding the course they wish to play in Ireland. It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit. The Irish Golf Guide has been brought to you by Irish Golf Guide Publications Ltd and Golf Guide Publications Ltd who publish magazines in the UK and the Costa del Sol. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving a similar success in the North West of England. This bi-monthly magazine will contain in depth reviews of Golf Clubs, Local and International News items, and special promotions. A select number of courses each issue will have editorial’s describing the course, the facilities and signature holes and contain the directions to the course. These editorials are the chance for each club

to highlight itself and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period. The magazine is split into 4 areas, Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found. Whilst in our first issue we will feature a number of the courses in each region, this will increase issue by issue. A full golf course listing will be featured in the magazine containing the address, phone number, email and website of every golf course in Ireland. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels from professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing calendar of events in Ireland for 2011 and beyond. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, and select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from the start of April. Happy golfing from all at the Irish Golf Guide!

“Druids Heath affords the player the opportunity to stride-out in a place which is invigorating to both body and soul...” Course Architect, Pat Ruddy

Druids Glen was originally the Woodstock Estate, which dates back to 1600, when it formed part of Sir Thomas Wentworth’s landholding in Wicklow and South East Ireland. Woodstock House, the clubhouse at Druids Glen, was built in 1770. Today, it is one of the world’s finest clubhouses, with each room dedicated to famous people throughout Irish History. There is even a Museum which allows visitors to learn about the history of this remarkable Country. Lord Tottenham, the Bishop of Ferns and Clogher, purchased Woodstock House in 1826. Tales of the Tottenham Family era, which lasted over a century at Woodstock, are legendary.

In early 1990, a consortium of Irish Businessmen purchased the property and brought the magic of this estate back to life with the creation of Druids Glen Golf Club. Known as “the Augusta of Europe”, the parkland Druids Glen golf course, designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, opened in 1995 and was the Home of the Irish Open in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999, with Colin Mongomerie winning twice, before losing a playoff to David Carter in 1998. In 1999, Sergio Garcia won his first professional tournament worldwide with a sensational Irish Open victory at Druids Glen. In 2000/’01 Druids Glen was honored to receive the “European Golf Course of the Year” Award

The opening of the Druids Glen Resort Hotel in 2002, enables visitors from all over the world to play and stay in a golfer’s paradise. The Hotel features 145 guestrooms complete with Leisure & Spa facilities. The creation of the sensational Druids Heath championship course, which opened for play in September 2003, has achieved the objective of Druids Glen becoming one of the World’s Finest Golf Resorts. Described as “Nature’s Gift to Golf”, Druids Heath is situated on a unique piece of land, which provides golfers with spectacular views of Mountains, Sea and Irish Countryside. The design is a complete contrast to the Druids Glen course.

In the words of Course Architect, Pat Ruddy: “Druids Heath affords the player the opportunity to stride-out in a place which is invigorating to both body and soul with the ever present sea breezes adding greatly to a sporting challenge, which is quite difficult to concentrate on as the eye wanders eagerly fifty miles out to sea, twenty miles southwards over an unspoiled, rolling pastoral scene to Wicklow Head and inland to the Wicklow Mountains”. Druids Heath is maintained to Tour Standards and features rolling fairways, natural rock quarries, lakes, trees, streams, gorse, gently undulating greens, traditional pot-bunkers and a testing sea breeze. Pick your team For the European Tour Fantasy Race The new European Tour Fantasy Race has just got underway, but it’s not too late to pick your team for a chance to win a golfing holiday to Dubai.

With its new format and fantastic prizes, the European Tour Fantasy Race promises plenty of excitement every week as your team of 15 look to accumulate as many points as possible. There are weekly, monthly and ultimately end of season prizes to be won, including European Tour merchandise, clubs and balls from Titleist and for the overall winner, the ultimate prize of a golfing holiday to Dubai including two business class flights from any Emirates destination and a five night stay at the Atlantis, the Palm, the official hotel of the Dubai World Championship, and golf at Jumeirah Golf Estate. The aim is still to accumulate as much prize money as possible throughout the season for your team of 15 players but with a few new rules. Entrants to the 2011 European Tour Fantasy Race will need to select a team of 15 players but in 2011 you will be only be permitted to make up to five changes to your team between events. And a big difference is that any money won by “Sold” players while they were in your chosen 15 will still count to your team’s total earnings. Lastly, Team changes can only be made on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This will put emphasis on selecting form players for each week, trying to choose players who are likely to favour particular courses or events, without fear of their earnings dropping out of your team’s tally if you substitute them later in the season. World Number One Holders of the Top Spot Although the top spot has changed hands 44 times since Bernhard Langer first took the position on April 6, 1986, since the creation of the Official World Golf Ranking (known as the Sony Ranking until 1997) only 13 players in all have held the coveted position of being officially the world’s number one golfer.

Tiger Woods (pictured below) holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one (281, from June 12, 2005 to October 24, 2010), as well as the most total weeks in the position at 623. The thirteen holders, and the total number of weeks at number one, are as follows, as at January 9, 2011:

MOST TIMES AS NO. 1 As the top spot has alternated between players over the years, Greg Norman has reached number one 11 separate times, Tiger Woods 10 times, Seve Ballesteros (pictured right) 5 and Nick Faldo 4, with Ernie Els and Vijay Singh 3 times each.

Bernhard Langer Severiano Ballesteros Greg Norman Nick Faldo Ian Woosnam Fred Couples Nick Price Tom Lehman Ernie Els David Duval Vijay Singh Tiger Woods Lee Westwood

SHORTEST TENURE Although several number ones - including Tiger Woods - have held the position for just one week before being displaced, only Tom Lehman among the twelve has been world number one for a single week in his career, in 1997.

3 weeks 61 weeks 331 weeks 97 weeks 50 weeks 16 weeks 44 weeks 1 week 9 weeks 15 weeks 32 weeks 623 weeks 11 weeks

YOUNGEST Tiger Woods was 21 years, 5 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on June 15, 1997. OLDEST Vijay Singh was 41 years, 6 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on September 5, 2004, and 42 years, 3 months and 3 weeks old when he last held the position on June 11, 2005. NATIONALITIES Of the twelve number ones, only four have been Americans, the position also having been held by a German, a Spaniard, an Australian, an Englishman, a Welshman, a Zimbabwean, a South African and a Fijian. YEAR LONG HOLDERS Only three players have held the position for at least 52 successive weeks: Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. The same three players are also the only ones to been world number one for a full calendar year: Nick Faldo throughout 1993, Greg Norman throughout 1996, and Tiger Woods throughout 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

In 2008, Tiger Woods achieved the remarkable feat of holding onto the number one position all year, despite not competing for more than six months after his June 16 playoff victory for the US Open against Rocco Mediate, as he underwent knee surgery and recuperation. He was still world number one on February 25, 2009, when he resumed tournament golf at the Accenture Match Play Championship. HIGHEST POINTS TOTAL Tiger Woods also holds the record for the highest ever average points total, when he reached 32.44 points (1459.64 points accumulated over 45 tournaments) on June 3, 2001, shortly before the 2001 US Open, at which point he was the first player ever to hold all four professional major championships simultaneously - the so-called ‘Tiger Slam’. BIGGEST LEAD Just before that, on May 20, 2001, Tiger Woods had also built the biggest ever lead in the rankings, when his 32.33 average points was 19.40 ahead of the then world number two Phil Mickelson on 12.93 average points.

Padraig Harrington Takes on new role Two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington has become the first “Working for Golf” ambassador for the sport’s ruling Royal and Ancient Club. The 39-year-old Dubliner, who at Birkdale three years ago became the first European golfer to make a successful defence of the Claret Jug since James Braid in 1906, will be promoting the work of the St Andrewsbased governing body on his travels. Chief Executive Peter Dawson said: “Padraig is a role model in the game and when he offered his time to support our golf development and rules education activities, we recognised the potential to reach the widest possible audience. “His active involvement in golf’s bid to rejoin the Olympic Games was an important factor in our success in what is a key development for the future growth of the game.”

Harrington, along with Matteo Manassero, Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen, spoke at the bid presentation to the International Olympic Committee two years ago and golf will return to the Games in Brazil in 2016 after an absence of more than a century. In his new role he will coach young people in R&A-funded golf development programmes, appear in Rules of Golf multimedia productions, promote the etiquette of the game, take part in biomechanical equipment testing sessions and support the work of the R&A Foundation. “The R&A has been a constant feature of my development in the game, from playing in boys and amateur events through to winning The Open Championship,” he commented. “I appreciate all the guidance and opportunities they provided along the way.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to give something positive back to the game, particularly in those countries around the world where golf is still in its infancy, introducing boys and girls to golf so they can benefit from the values that the game teaches you. “I am constantly amazed at how much the R&A do for the game worldwide from development to the rules, etiquette and other areas. “The more I learnt the more I wanted to get involved in their work and, given that I play a global schedule, I am well-placed to assist on various projects around the world.” In his first act as an ambassador Harrington announced the R&A’s continued support for grassroots development programmes in Ireland, worth more than £200,000 over the next three years.

Killeen Castle Venue to the 2011 Solheim Cup Killeen Castle, the ancestral home of the Earls of Fingal, sits in a wooded estate in 600 acres in Dunsany, Co. Meath. Set in the historic grounds of one of Ireland’s oldest and finest 12th century Norman castles, the estate at Killeen Castle is home to a unique development of supreme quality residences discreetly positioned among the natural woodlands of the demesne and throughout which the magnificent Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course winds. Jack Nicklaus, course designer at Killeen Castle, said: “As the course designer, I am proud to be part of what is happening at Killeen Castle. It is phenomenal, what with the castle as a focal point. You have wonderful facilities to stage The Solheim Cup or the Ryder Cup in the future. It is a very strong course and will be nicely matured for 2011.” Located just north of Dunshaughlin in the

heart of Royal Meath overlooked by the ancient Hill of Tara, Killeen Castle is just minutes from the picturesque hamlet of Dunsany. Killeen Castle offers all the joys of true country living, yet it is only 35 minutes from Dublin International Airport and 45 minutes from Dublin city centre. The golfing facilities are augmented by a 30,000 sq ft stand alone modern purpose built clubhouse, with parking facilities in an old wall garden setting for 260 cars. In the context of holding The Solheim Cup, the venue provides ample room (500 acres) for public village and hospitality facilities, a television compound, grandstands and spectator traffic flow, all adjacent to the dramatic 18th hole. Killeen Castle is soon to be complemented by a luxury hotel and spa. For more information, visit the club’s website, www.killeencastle.com

The 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle in Ireland will be played September 23-25. “We have chosen to move The Solheim Cup back to September for a number of reasons,” said Alexandra Armas, Executive Director of the LET. “In consultation with our stakeholders and global partners AIB, PING and ROLEX, we have chosen a date that will ensure that the whole nation is able to support the event. Given the great success of the Ryder Cup in Ireland in September 2006, we anticipate that the Irish public will contribute to taking The Solheim Cup to a higher level. The countdown to The 2011 Solheim Cup begins now!” Roddy Carr, Director of Killeen Castle, said: “September is one of the most beautiful months to visit Ireland for golf and especially Killeen Castle and all the Heritage sites surrounding it. We cannot wait to extend a warm traditional Irish welcome to all attending The Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle.”

The 3 Irish Open Returns to Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

The European Tour and Fáilte Ireland have confirmed that the Irish Open will return to the Killeen Course at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club from July 28-31, 2011.

Killarney itself. There was a wonderful festival atmosphere generated by the record crowds over the course of the week and we are so pleased to be returning.”

It will be the fourth time in history that the tournament has been staged at the renowned County Kerry venue. On the first two occasions, in 1991 and 1992, Sir Nick Faldo emerged as the champion while on the tournament’s return to Killarney in July of this year, Faldo’s fellow countryman Ross Fisher triumphed after holding off a determined final day challenge from home hero Padraig Harrington.

Fáilte Ireland Chairman Redmond O’Donoghue: “We are delighted to once again be involved in this great event and to commit to being a major sponsor to ensure its continued success. The 2010 tournament saw a revival of the event to its former status and provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase Ireland to an audience of 394 million homes worldwide.

Fisher’s victory helped him secure his Ryder Cup debut later in the year and join an impressive list of 17 other players from both sides of the Atlantic who, since the birth of The European Tour in 1972, have both an Irish Open win and Ryder Cup honours on their respective golfing CVs: Seve Ballesteros, Thomas Björn, Ken Brown, Ben Crenshaw, Nick Faldo, Sergio Garcia, Hubert Green, Søren Hansen, Padraig Harrington, Mark James, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Christy O’Connor Jnr, José Maria Olazábal, John O’Leary, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam. European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady: “All our Members have spoken very highly of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and the tremendous welcome given to them, not only by the club but by the town of

golf enthusiasts at the event in the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club last July. The world class field of players, including some of our top Irish golfers, ensured that the event was a huge success. It is great to once again showcase all that is good about golf in Ireland.” The winner will have to conquer not only a high quality field but also the Killeen Course itself. The jewel in the crown of the three-course Killarney Golf Complex was originally designed in 1972 by Eddie Hackett and Billy O’Sullivan. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide a stunning backdrop to the course.

“The event attracted the best field seen for many years with 25 of Europe’s top 50 players participating. Some 82,000 spectators came to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club over the four days – the second highest attendance for a European Tour event after their flagship BMW PGA Championship which was attended by 88,000 spectators. We are happy to be able to confirm our continued involvement in the Irish Open for 2011.”

Maurice O’Meara, General Manager of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club said: “Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is delighted and welcomes the announcement that the 2011 Irish Open will return to Killarney to be played on the world-class Killeen Course. Following the amazing success of last year’s Irish Open, we hope that we can build on this success and add even more to this year’s event.

Mary Hanafin, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, said: “This is wonderful news for Killarney and for Irish golf. Everyone who attended the tournament and millions of television viewers across the globe were enthralled by the golf and the beauty of the scenery in Killarney. I witnessed myself the warm festival atmosphere that was afforded to players, their families, caddies, officials and

“We look forward to working closely with The European Tour, Fáilte Ireland and all of the local businesses in Killarney to make the 2011 Irish Open one of the Irish sporting events of the year. Having welcomed the leading European Tour players in 2010 we hope that they and their families will return again in 2011 for a Bank Holiday festival of golf.” www.europeantour.com

Teen prodigy Rory McIlroy has set the European Tour alight since turning pro on 18th September 2007. Hard-hitting Rory was always destined to become a professional golfer since the moment he recorded a 40-yard drive aged just two-years-old. His first hole in one came when he was just nine and he played in his first professional European Tour event as a 16-year-old in 2005 at The Forest of Arden. His amazing amateur career saw him conquer Ireland and Europe, before becoming just the second person to top the World Amateur Rankings in 2007. Rory represented Europe in the winning Junior Ryder Cup team in 2004, before becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious West of Ireland and Irish Close Championships in 2005. The following year he successfully retained both Irish amateur titles and in August 2006 he won the European Amateur Championship. Rory shot into the public eye with his superb opening three-under-par 68 in the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the only bogey-free round of the day. He went on to tie for 42nd position and accept the Silver Medal as leading amateur. Rory went on to make the cut in his first professional event at the Quinn Direct British

Masters, and finished third in his second professional event, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. These successes earned the golfing sensation enough money to virtually assure his place in the top 115. Despite high expectations, Rory keeps a cool head on his young shoulders and lets his golf do the talking. In 2008 Rory exceeded his expectations by making it to the Volvo Masters at Valderrama and entering the elite of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. At the beginning of the 2009 season Rory was beaten in a play-off for the UBS Hong Kong Open title - this performance elevated him into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings which has assured him a coveted place in the 2009 Masters Tournament at Augusta in April. Rory’s maiden victory came in the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic where he endured a nail-biting final hole and ultimately beat Justin Rose to the title by one shot. Rory finished in 2nd place in the inaugural European Tour Race To Dubai. Rory made his mark in the USA in April 2010 when he won the Quail Hollow Championship on the PGA Tour shooting a course record 62 on the final day, beating Phi Mickelson by four shots.

Casual wear with discreet high-tech functionality is represented by a hooded sweater made of a trendy, mixed-grey jersey material, which looks like a simple sweater from the outside but is thinly laminated on the inside – making it 100% waterproof. The thin hood can be tucked into the collar, while pleats lend the sweater the necessary touch for a feminine, sporty-chic look. The silicone laminate material innovation embodies the ever-present performance aspect and can be found throughout the entire module in soft stripes. The latest fashion trends,

such as pagoda shoulders, are included and given a sporty interpretation with puffed sleeves on the polo shirts and half-zip sweaters. The outerwear in this module also features functional Dry Comfort. A further highlight is the extremely light and waterproof reversible jacket, which boasts powerful colours on one side and discreet shades of grey on the other. The Dry Comfort polo shirt with racerback design, integrated bra, numerous seams and mesh inserts for ventilation is a real eye-catcher in this module. The outfit is completed by a waterproof waistcoat with an extra-high collar and asymmetrical design, as well as the techno stretch capri in thermo cool in a jeans look with a pleated hem on the lower leg. Slim cuts and sporty, playful ruffles set the overall look in G+ Women. For more information visit: www.golfino.com

Druh Belts & Buckles Take Golf Market by Storm Druh Belts & Buckles, a unique range of stylish belts and buckles, were only launched just over a year ago by Yorkshireman and former touring pro Simon Hurd but already they have taken the golf market by storm.

Hurdy, as he is known on Tour, has in the past been known for the distinctive and colourful pork pie hats he dons on the golf course, but not for much longer as the overwhelming success of Druh has now placed him firmly on the golf fashion map. The immediate impact of the belts is according to Hurd down to the fact that they offer the discerning golfer an extensive selection of stylish handmade leather and snakeskin belts in sumptuous classic and chic casual styles and can be as outrageous or classical as the wearer wishes. Druh Belts are available in leather and water snakeskin in a variety of colours ranging from funky pastels and eye-catching metallics and in different embossed styles from crocodile to ostrich effect for the more adventurous golfers whilst also catering for the more traditional golfer who prefers his belts in black, white, brown or blue. Druh’s interchangeable buckles all featuring the signature ‘db’ logo in brushed nickel, polished silver or gold, diamante and enamel mean each belt can be customised to the individual taste of the wearer. A host of European pros such as David Howell, Graeme Storm and Simon Kahn can be seen

sporting Druh Belts & Buckles on tour whilst tour champions Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Ireland’s Paul McGinley all act as brand ambassadors for Druh. World number one Lee Westwood of England has also recently joined the stable of Druh ambassadors that are loving and wearing Druh. Druh has also proved a hit with the lady pros, so much so that the brand designed a range of signature flower buckles especially for girls. The new range features a pretty flower motif encrusted with a sparkling diamante ‘db’ set off by a variety of enamel infills in pink, purple, red and yellow as well as the more traditional white and black. Now such characters as flamboyant American Christina Kim, Jimin Kang of South Korea, Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and Becky Brewerton of Wales are all sporting a bit of Druh ‘flower power’ both on and off the course. “I have always taken an interest in fashion both on and off the golf course, so it seemed a natural sideline for me to go into after I stopped playing golf,” says Hurd, always smart dresser with well-tailored attire. “I have a particular passion for belts and traveling the world, I have always found it difficult to find stylish, good quality belts. So I

started designing my own and commissioned a local leather craftsman in Thailand to handmake them. So many friends and fellow golfers liked them that I decided it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start a business out of it. “Golf gear is often perceived as rather staid and dull so I wanted to have a bit of fun designing belts and buckles that were a little bit funky, yet stylish, and certainly they have been an instant hit with pro golfers all over the world. And now it is the chance for all those amateurs out there to smarten up their golf look with one of my Druh belts!” Before selling his Druh Belts & Buckles, Hurd was a regular on the Asian Tour after playing on The European Tour on and off for the last 10 years. In his last year of full time play in 2007, he was ranked 49th in the Order of Merit and is yet to claim his first win in the Far East. Druh Belts & Buckles make the perfect present for anyone who has an eye for fashion or simply likes looking good. Available through the internet at www. druhbeltsandbuckles.com at £89 for leather and £159 for snakeskin allows golfers to design their own unique belt by choosing their own belt and buckle combination.

Ulster Introduction

Ulster

From the natural wonders of the Giants Causeway and the Marble Arch caves, to the country houses and gardens of Castleward, Mount Stewart and Florencecourt, the glorious sandy beaches on the Antrim coast and the tranquil shores of Lough Erne and Strangford Lough, right across to the spectacular and rugged coastline of Donegal there is much to see and do in this varied and beautiful province of Ulster. There are the bustling and colourful cities of Belfast and Londonderry, with their many stylish bars, restaurants, hotels and many historical attractions. However, if you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, the Antrim Coast really is as impressive as its reputation suggests. It is one of the most beautiful shorelines in Ireland, winding past towering cliffs, sandy beaches, picturesque harbours and family resorts. Inland lies Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Great Britain and Ireland and the Fermanagh lakelands, sprinkled with tiny islands, wooded parks and monastic ruins.

On the west coast lies Donegal, with its breathtaking misty mountains, serene lakes and dramatic coastlines. Donegal boasts a vast rugged coastline softened regularly by a succession of beautiful beaches with golden sand and clear fresh waters. Inland, Donegal is wild and unspoilt with winding roads leading to never-ending spectacular vistas. Major attractions include Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Tory Island, Glebe House and Gallery, Colmcille Heritage Centre, Fort Dunree Military Museum and Abbey Mill Wheels. Letterkenny, County Donegal’s largest town, has a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great place to shop for everything from high street fashions to quality handcrafted goods and designer clothes - alternatively, you can relax and enjoy a coffee in one of Letterkenny’s many continental-style cafes. Seaside resorts like Bundoran provide a change of mood - if you’re looking for lively nights filled with music, song and dance, then Bundoran is the place to go.

The golf courses in Ulster contain an impressive mix of quality Parkland, Heathland and Links courses, and in Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, two world renowned golf courses along with Ballyliffin and Rosapenna in Donegal, all of which offer a spectacular links challenge to keep golfers from both sides of the Atlantic returning to these shores again and again.

From Dublin: Follow the M3 Motorway, leading to the N3 through Virginia and towards Cavan. At the roundabout just outside Cavan town, take the N3 signposted for Enniskillen and at the roundabout after Belturbet take the first exit (N87) for Ballyconnell town. The Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club is situated approximately 5 miles from Belturbet on the left hand side (before you reach the town of Ballyconnell).

Facilities Forming part of a magnificent 300 acre estate, including 50 acres of lakes, our highly acclaimed 18-hole championship course is sensitively wrapped around the lakes and the drumlins of the County Cavan landscape. The course presents a wonderful challenge and the devilishly tricky greens present a searching examination of accurate approach play, which adds to the enjoyment factor.

The Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club has hosted some major European Challenge Tour and Irish PGA Tournaments. These include, the Buzz.com North West of Ireland Open, the Irish PGA Championship and also the Quinn Insurance PGA Charity Pro-Am, which has been held since 1997 and has now become an annual event and boasts the highest prize fund for Irish PGA Professionals.

Not surprisingly the complex has always proved very popular with visiting golf groups from all over Ireland, the UK and Europe and many return on a regular basis to sample our renowned hospitality.

Whilst every hole on the golf course is a challenge, the par 5 13th is the signature hole with its fairway hugging the shores of one of the course’s natural lakes offering a risk/reward opportunity on every shot.

The Irish Golf Guide

Connaught Introduction

Connaught The province of Connaught (Connacht) lies in the West of Ireland with its coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The counties of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon are within its boundary. Historically, Connaught has retained its rich Gaelic heritage and today still has communities where the Irish language is spoken. These regions are collectively called the Gaeltacht. Connaught has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland, including the spectacular mountainous landscape of Connemara. The primary

business centre of Connaught, and most densely populated area, is the thriving city of Galway to the south of the province. Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland. The streets and buildings of this ancient town have many interesting features, and its position on the edge of the Gaeltacht makes it the gateway to magnificent areas such as Connemara, Corrib country, and the Aran Islands. The city itself is a continuing centre of growth with its University, Institute of Technology, Theatres, Cathedral, Castle, Hotels, Docks, Industries as well as other interesting attractions.

As for golf, the dramatic scenery and splendour of the Connaught region has created wonderful natural landscapes for golf course designers to hone their skills. Like all areas in the west of Ireland, the first obstacle to a good score is Mother Nature herself. The golfer will find that he or she will not alone have to contend with the cunning and guile of architect allied to the terrain, but must adjust for what is benignly known in local parlance as the “westerly breeze coming straight across three thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean.

Athlone

From the East: Follow signs for Galway on the M6 motorway. Continue past Athlone on the bypass. Cross over the River Shannon bridge and take the Roscommon Exit (N61). Continue towards Roscommon for approximately 5kms. Athlone Golf Club is well sign posted and located to your right.

Athlone Golf Club was founded in 1892 making it one of the longest established clubs in the country. It is a superb 18-hole parkland course situated on the shores of Lough Ree in the centre of the country bounded on three sides by picturesque Lough Ree. Beautifully designed, the course exploits the natural splendour of its surroundings, affording from its vantage points and from the modern strategically appointed clubhouse, with panoramic views of the lake and its wooded islands. Its tree-lined fairways and undulating terrain make it a true test of golf for all standards of golfer.

Athlone Golf Club has hosted many provincial and national championships, including the All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals in 1998. Also, in 2007, the All Ireland Mixed and All Ireland Ladies Championships were held here. Signature Hole: 13th, 396m par 4. A severe dogleg right to left, you drive over “the saddle” into a valley. The braver you are with your tee shot, the shorter the blind approach to the relatively small green, protected by a bunker to the left and mounds and hollows to the right. A par is a great score on any day. Anything higher and you will want to go back and play it again… but differently!

A centenarian with all the dignity and maturity of age, County Sligo is one of Ireland’s great championship links. The club has hosted most of Ireland’s major championships in it’s long and venerable history. Three large beaches beneath the cliffs keep the Atlantic Ocean at bay. Benbulben Mountain competes with the ocean for scenic splendour on the land side. The Championship Course was designed by Harry Colt in 1927. Over the years, County Sligo has attracted some of golf’s most illustrious exponents, and the holders of 41 of Golf’s Major Championships have pitted their skills against Harry Colt’s design. The

wind from the sea is a constant factor but the 3rd, 5th, 10th and 14th holes have very satisfying downhill drives to compensate. The 9 hole Bomore Course was added in 1999 and has become very popular with members and visitors alike. These holes present a very different challenge - the prickly gorse bushes and numerous water hazards await an errant drive. The terrain is flat and mostly below sea level and is regarded as a very challenging test. The newly constructed Bomore driving range is adjacent to the first tee, this superb facility is a tremendous addition to the complex.

Enniscrone

From Dublin take N4 for Sligo. Just before Sligo turn off at Colloney for Ballina. In the 40 minute journey from here you will pass through Dromore West before taking a right turn for Enniscrone. Enniscrone is 55km from Sligo Regional Airport. From Knock Airport (56km), follow the signpost for Swinford. Travel through Swinford, Foxford and then Ballina. Enniscrone is 13km from Ballina, off the R297 Enniscrone-Ballina road.

Facilities Enniscrone Golf Club is located in County Sligo in Northwest Ireland. Situated beside the picturesque seaside town of Enniscrone (also spelt as Inniscrone), the golf course affords panoramic views of Killala Bay, Bartra Island and sandy beaches with Nephin and the Ox Mountains forming the backdrop. Founded in 1918, redesigned by Eddie Hackett in 1974 and by Donald Steel in 2001, this Irish championship course is one of Ireland’s finest authentic golf links. Apart from the championship links known as The Dunes, there is also the splendid 9 hole Scurmore course. After the adventures through The

Dunes or the Scurmore Course, the clubhouse is the ideal place to relax for refreshment and restore the energy levels. The recently refurbished Clubhouse and Restaurant offer a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with extensive views over the Course. Signature Hole 16th - The Long Bank, Par 5 , 514 Yards A tough but straight forward par 5, where keeping the ball on the fairway a must. The second shot should favour the right hand side to leave the best approach, as club selection can vary greatly to the green which is wide but very shallow.

The Irish Golf Guide

Leinster Introduction

Leinster The province of Leinster takes in an area from the southern border of Northern Ireland through to the sunny south east corner of the island of Ireland, with over one and a half million people living in the vibrant, not to be missed city of Dublin and its surrounding areas alone. Leinster takes in the counties of Carlow, Dublin & Dublin City, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford & Wicklow. It has a long sea coast, stretching from Carlingford Bay in County Louth to Hook Head in County Wexford. Leinster is probably best viewed as a series of sub regions, each sub region encapsulating its own local geography, unique landscape and separate but co-joined history. From the ancient Hill of Tara and the world famous stone age site at Newgrange, at 5000 years old it is considered to be one the oldest man made structures in the world, to the vibrant and stylish city of Kilkenny and then to Wicklow, the famous

‘Garden of Ireland’, there are an amazing number of historical and fascinating places to visit for both the golfer and non-golfer alike. Dublin, it’s Capital is a county as well as a city and sprawls over a large part of this area. From the superb nightlife to the modern museums and art galleries, great little sea-side resorts along the coast, the lavish gardens of Howth Castle, or the unique and wonderful collection of Irish furniture and paintings at Malahide Castle - its all here in a city not to be missed. From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland. With plenty of great links courses such as Arklow, Seapoint and St Annes, to the large inland golf resorts of Druid’s Glen, Mount Juliet and Carton House, not forgetting the reknowned K Club near Dublin, where The Ryder Cup was won so emphatically by Europe in 2006, Leinster has plenty of variety to challenge golfers of all levels.

This traditional links was originally formed by Hawtree & Taylor and has evolved with the aid of inputs from Eddie Hackett and in recent times Eddie Connaughton. The links has been described as a hidden jewel and the

Southern Region of the Irish PGA held their 2001 and 2002 Championships on this links. Signature Hole Hole 2, Par 4, ‘The Graveyard’ This is a stiff test as the green is unsighted from the tee due to a large dune. It is best to drive to the left of the fairway which avoids heavy rough on right and opens up a good view of the green. Difficult undulations on the green make this a tough par 4 and well worthy of its Index 6. The name derives from the distant past when it was an animal graveyard. Designer and five times (5) Open Champion J H Taylor considered this hole to be the best test of golf on the course.

Ashbourne

From Ashbourne Village:
Turn at Ashbourne House Hotel. Follow road for approx. 1 mile. Course Entrance on left just after the skew-backed bridge. From M50:
Take exit for N2 (Derry/ Ashbourne). Take exit 3 (signposted for Ashbourne/Ratoath/Swords). At roundabout take third exit (road to Swords). Take 1st left turn - there is a sign for the course at the junction. You will see the course on your right in a matter of seconds. From Airport:
Follow signs for M1 South. On M1 take exit for M50. Follow instructions above. Ashbourne Golf Club is a fine parkland layout designed by Declan Branigan Design with Ryder Cup Vice-Captain Des Smyth. Measuring 5,869 meters from the Championship tees, the par 71 course is not long by today’s standards, but it still proves to be a stern test of golf. The combination of Broadmeadow River and the five man-made lakes come into play on thirteen holes. The difficulty of the layout is further enhanced by a number of strategically positioned trees. The combination of a fine golf course and a very friendly atmosphere in our clubhouse

makes Ashbourne Golf Club a perfect venue for a casual round or a society outing. The facilities have been improved with the opening of our new restaurant by award winning chef Keith Kenny. Golfers and nongolfers alike can enjoy Keith’s fine food in the friendly atmosphere of the bar or the more formal setting of the restaurant. Signature Hole: Hole 12, Par 4, 373 Metres A fantastic hole that brings the river into play from the tee and again on the approach. Steely nerves are required even if the golfer decides to lay up on their second shot. A classic risk and reward Par 4.

Signature Hole: The Index 1, 16th tee box sits on the bank of the River Slaney giving a glimpse of the green over 400 yards away, an accurate drive is required through the mature pines with a little draw to avoid the fairway bunkers, to compliment a good drive requires a well executed mid to long iron to the green which is part surrounded by the River, a par will be a memorable result.

The 18th Hole is one of the great finishing holes in Ireland. As the golfer stands on the tee-box, they are faced with an inspirational par 4 that demands an acute level of accuracy. To successfully hit the fairway from the tee, the golfer must manoeuvre their ball through a narrow gap that is protected by mature trees on both sides, while at the same time avoiding the first of two lakes that runs down the left hand side of the fairway. Having successfully hit the fairway, the golfer is then faced with a daunting 2nd shot to the green, the main obstacle being a lake that runs right up to the front edge of the green. A good score at this hole will certainly make the 19th hole even more enjoyable.

There are few places in the world that encapsulate the true spirit of the game of golf like Druids Heath. The Mountains, Sea and rolling Irish Countryside provide stunning vistas throughout your round. The sea breeze calls for shot-making skills and imagination from the golfer.

In the words of Pat Ruddy “Druids Heath affords the player the opportunity to stride-out in a place which is invigorating to both body and soul with the ever present sea breezes adding greatly to a sporting challenge, which is quite difficult to concentrate on as the eye wanders eagerly fifty miles out to sea, twenty miles southwards over an unspoiled, rolling pastoral scene to Wicklow Head and inland to the Wicklow Mountains. Dull would he be of soul who would allow a few stray shots spoil a day in such a blessed spot”. Venue for the 2006 Irish PGA Championship, Druids Heath has played host to many of the worlds leading Tour Players.

Major focal points of the course are the secluded 4th and 6th holes, which are isolated from the remainder of the course by a meandering stream, drawing the golfer into a difficult shot to the green; indeed the aforementioned 6th remains one of the best inland par fours in Ireland. The Club plays host to many outings during

the year and can provide first class food and drink in a friendly atmosphere. It is this friendliness which members cherish among themselves and which ensures that visitors are made to feel welcome. Signature Hole: Hole 6 - Par 4 - 382 Metres The elevated tee yields a beautiful view of this well protected green, surrounded by river (front), as well as bunkers and ponds. But don’t spend too much time enjoying the scenery. Try to leave approach short of pin, as the green slopes strongly from back to front. Par is a good score, as danger lurks around every turn...

The gentle rolling terrain with majestic trees provides a fair and stern test to golfers of all abilities, and has hosted many Golfing Union of Ireland competitions and was used as a prequalifying course for the Irish Open in the 1980’s.

Signature Holes: Hole 7 - A gem of a par 3 measuring 149 metres with a large pond at the front and 6 protective bunkers surrounding the green. The green is much deeper and longer than it appears from the tee and it has very subtle undulations. This hole was rated as the Best 7th Hole in North Dublin. Hole 18
- This par 4 measuring 418 metres is as strong a finishing hole as you are likely to find. There is a gap to be negotiated at 220 metres. Once through, you are only halfway there. The green is well protected by 3 large bunkers, one on the left and 2 on the right. The green is set on two tiers and is very difficult to read.

Hollywood Lakes Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Ballyboughal village, in North County Dublin. It lies within a 20 minute drive from Dublin Airport. Consequently, it is ideally located for golfers travelling from abroad.

Combine this element of the design with a multitude of trees and it is easy to see where the challenge emanates from. A full bar and catering service is available in the friendly atmosphere of the clubhouse.

Designed by Mel Flanagan, who made major improvements during 2002, this 18-hole parkland golf course measures 6707 yards from the championship tees including a 641 yard par 5 and comprises a par of 72. This course is truly a test for every category of golfer. Currently there are 11 lakes and water features that sees water impact on 9 out of the 18 holes.

Our signature hole in most members’ eyes would be our 8th. Measuring just 379 yards it is a dog leg left and its degree of difficulty has increased since the introduction of a new bunker to the left of the green just in front of the water. A three wood off the tee leaves a mid-iron to a green which slopes from back to front and no matter where you are on the green you will have a very slick putt.

Mount Juliet Golf Course opened in 1991 with a match featuring golfing legends Christy O’Connor Snr. and Jack Nicklaus. The beautiful and challenging Mount Juliet golf course has established itself as a premier golfing venue for Top Professionals and leisure golfers worldwide. Chosen as the first and only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in Ireland, the “Golden Bear” was meticulous and pain-staking in his design and overseeing of the construction of his great creation. In preparation for the WGC - American Express Golf Championship that was held here in September 2002 and again in 2004,

the Jack Nicklaus design team instigated some extensions and new features to the course, showing Mount Juliet’s continued pursuit of golfing excellence. Signature Holes: Feature holes on Mount Juliet Golf Course include the stunning 3rd hole, a par 3 from an elevated tee to a green guarded by a natural stream and lake... one that golfers always remember. Also the par 5, 10th hole with its copse of trees which tests the golfers strategy. The final hole, a long par 4 with water all down the left and a narrow approach to the green has decided many a tournament result.

Mature woodland’s and water hazards of the front nine are in stark contrast to the long

The four hundred and twenty yard eighteenth brings play back to the breathtaking surrounds of the clubhouse. Hole 11, Par 3, 195 yards. This is Seafields signature hole. From Dublin: Get onto the M1 heading North and continue through the Toll Plaza and across the Boyne Suspension Bridge. Take the Drogheda North Exit. Then take the right hand exit (Monasterboice) from the first roundabout. Go straight at next roundabout. At the 3rd roundabout take the first left for the Monasterboice exit. Continue on this road and follow the signs to Termonfeckin. When you arrive in Termonfeckin you will be opposite a church. Turn left and cross a hump back bridge. Take the next right which will be signposted for Seapoint Golf Club which is 1 mile further on the right hand side. The challenge at Seapoint begins from the first tee embarking onto a testing 7,150 yard Par 72 course set on 260 acres of magnificent links land. There is an abundance of natural vegetation and wonderful dunes awaiting any errant shot. Every club in the bag is required to play this championship course. Progress through a front nine with a slightly heath land feel with an abundance of gorse and mature tress lining the boundary off the course. Water comes into play on 5 of the holes. The back nine drift close to the sea and are characterised by uneven fairways, thick rough and deep bunkers, requiring

accuracy both of the tee and into the greens. Continuing home to the clubhouse presents little time to relax with the last three holes weaving through dunes and distracting the golfer with panoramic views and a strong sea breeze - pure links enjoyment. Signature Hole: Hole 11, Par 4. Placement off the tee is key at this hole, find the left hand side of the fairway just short of the bunker and you are in prime position. Be careful with the second shot as it is uphill and players tend to come up short. This is a beautiful par 4 and you will travel a long way to find one better.

From the M50: Continue to the very end of the M50, following signs for Malahide. You are now on the N32. Go straight through the traffic lights at Clare Hall. Keep straight, passing through one small roundabout. At next roundabout, take the 3rd exit in the direction of Donaghmede. Turn right at the T-Junction and take the 1st left onto Raheny Road. Go straight at traffic lights and turn left at T-Junction onto Watermill Road. Keep straight at traffic lights that bring you onto the Causeway Road. The entrance to St. Anne’s is on the left hand side. St. Anne’s Golf Club is an impressive links with a par of 71. There is not one ’pushover’ hole on the entire course and wind conditions can be a major factor in how the course is played. There are 408 Golf clubs in Ireland, but only 53 of these are links courses, and St. Anne’s are proud to be one of this exclusive ’club’.

with a new state-of-the-art clubhouse and significant development to the course itself. This included the building of five new greens and eight new tee complexes. The sacred turf of the old Croke Park pitch was used to great effect in developing, strengthening and giving real definition to the back nine in St. Anne’s.

The unique setting of this famous old links, with the splendid panoramic views of Howth Head and across Dublin Bay to the Wicklow mountains, ensures a most relaxing and enjoyable game. Founded in 1921, it is a member-owned golf club. In 2003 an extensive redevelopment of the course was completed,

Hole 7, “Brent”, Par 4, 472 yards (Blue Tee). The seventh hole is surely one of the strongest Par 4’s in North County Dublin. This long demanding hole requires an accurate drive to the right hand side of the fairway in order to set up a shot to the semi blind green. To play this hole in par is a delight whatever your handicap.

Continue on the M7/N7 and take exit for Monasterevin. Pass through Monasterevin village and travel for 3 KM and take right turn at Bolands Pub. Killenard village is located just 3 Km from this junction.

Facilities The Heritage is a par 72 Championship golf course set in the beautiful rolling countryside of Co. Laois with the Slieve Bloom Mountains as a backdrop. Designed by Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes, this championship course provides the most enjoyable experience for golfers of all standards in Ireland. Five lakes and a stream meander through the course and brings water into play on 10 holes. 98 beautifully shaped bunkers and 7,000 trees adorn the landscape, which is very gently undulating without any climbing involved. A variety of tees allow the course to be played from 5,747 to 7,319 yards.

Signature Holes: Hole 4, Par 3, 214 yards (Blue tee) Signature hole 214 yard par 3 from the Championship tee. Green protected on left with large bunker complex, and a large lake to the right and behind. Prevailing wind tends to push tee shot towards lake on right. Hole 18, Par 4, 447 yards (Blue tee) A demanding tee shot with lake on left side of fairway. A slight draw here off the tee sets you up for an approach shot to a green, tucked up against the lake with heavy bunkering on the right. A very intimidating finishing hole!

The Irish Golf Guide

Munster Introduction

Munster Munster is the southern most province of Ireland and is home to 6 of the 32 counties – Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Wareford and Tipperary. All the counties in Munster touch the Atlantic except for Tipperary – tha largest county in Ireland. Cork is the second largest county in Ireland and is also the second largest city. Other cities in the province include Limerick and Waterford. The major towns are Tralee, Killarney, Ennis, Clonmel and Thurles. Cork has a population of over 160,000 people. Like Venice the city is built upon the waters, and Cork centre is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Cork Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee which embrace the city centre are spanned by many bridges, and this gives the city a distinctive continental air. However it is often said of Cork City that it has all the amenities of a large city, but still manages to retain its pleasant atmosphere and extreme friendliness, which you will experience on your visit. Cork is a city of

remarkable charm, and the visitor cannot fail to be captivated by its hilly streets, bumpy bridges and peaceful backwaters. Munster is a tremendously fertile area of Ireland with many major rivers including the Bandon, the Lee, the Blackwater, the Suir and the final stages of the Shannon and its spectacular Lough Derg which is a border point of Munster, Connacht and Leinster. Munster has a number of mountain ranges and includes the largest peak in Ireland - Carrauntoohil in Kerry’s majestic MacGillycuddy Reeks. Sport is almost regarded as a religion in Munster. The Gaelic Athletic Association - GAA - was formed in Thurles, Co.Tipperary and all Munster counties are passionate about their hurling and gaelic football. Munster rugby unites all the six counties and their followers and supporters are known the world over. There are golf courses to suit every golfer throughout Munster, from fine parkland courses

and resorts such as Killarney and Mahoneys’s Point in Kerry and Fota Island Golf and Country Club, Lee Valley and Monkstown in Cork. The province is also home to several spectacular and world reknowned links courses including Tralee, Waterville and Dooks in County Kerry, all situated on the wild Atlantic coast.

01. How to Find Coming from the Dublin Road,
Turn left off the Dunkettle round about onto the Cork to Waterford N25 and follow directions as below.

Cobh

Coming from Cork or Waterford direction,
Leave the N25 at exit to Cobh. Go through the roundabouts in direction Cobh and/or Fota Wildlife Park onto the R624. Travel 3 km (past the entrance to Fota Wildlife Park on right). Cross the Belvelly Bridge. Immediately turn right (staying on the R624). Follow the road for 2km. Entrance to the Golf Course is on the left side. Cobh Golf Club is unique in that it remains the latest members owned club to be affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland. It enjoys a vibrant membership with a friendly welcoming atmosphere to guests and visitors alike. The new course opened for full play in June 2009. This parkland style course is situated at Marino Point, and is 2 miles outside the picturesque town of Cobh in Cork Harbour. It is an 18 hole championship standard golf course with USGA specification greens and a genuine Island Green at the par3 10th. The magnificent site at Marino is

located in an elevated position and offers stunning views of the inner harbour, the estuary and surrounding countryside. Signature Hole Hole 10, Par 3, 167 Yards (Blue Tee) Located on the highest point of the golf course, with spectacular panoramic view, is every golfers dream (and nightmare), a Par 3 with an island green. The length of the hole is 170 metres from the back tee, but the drop down to the green is over 12 metres, so the hole plays much shorter than its length suggests. Additionally the green has plenty of gently sloping surrounds.

Dooks

Dooks Golf Club is very easy to find as it is situated on the famous Ring of Kerry Road, about 5 miles from Killorglin and two or three miles before you come to Glenbeigh, on the right hand side

Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889. The golf links is set out on one of the three stretches of sand dunes at the head of Dingle bay. In the immediate foreground are the sand dune peninsulas of Rossbeigh and Inch and just a few miles away the whitewashed houses of Cromane fishing village provide an eye catching distraction.

South eastwards are the famed McGillycuddy’s Reeks, to the Southwest are the lovely cooms and hills of Glenbeigh and across the bay to the north are the Slieve Mish and Dingle mountains. A truly magical location for a stunning golf course.

Dooks Golf Links is not as exposed as some Irish courses and features and amazing variety of gorse, heather and wild flowers, the “gentle” wind is never far away and the narrow genuine sandy fairways and well contoured greens offer you a real taste of traditional golf at its very best. Signature Hole: The 18th Par 4. An awesome par 4 into the prevailing wind. Drive over the hill towards the chimneys in the distance. From the top of the hill admire the vista while you prepare to hit a full shot to the green. For shorter drives lay up short of the dunes and chip close.

From Cork Airport Take the E30 as far as the Cobh Exit, approximately nine miles (15 kilometres) east of Cork. Follow the R264 towards Cobh for approximately two miles (three kilometres). Follow signs for Fota Island Golf Club and the resort is on the left.

Facilities Fota Island Golf Club is just a few minutes drive from Cork City’s international airport. Located in the heart of a 780 acre estate which is included in “The Inventory of Outstanding Landscapes in Ireland”. The splendid woodlands are woven into three challenging championship courses which are very much in the traditional mode, featuring strategically placed bunkers and undulating putting surfaces. The Deerpark Course at Fota Island Golf Club with its receptive greens and strategic bunkering impresses even the most experienced professionals. The Deerpark was proud to host the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002.

The Belvelly Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 72 course stretching over 7121 yards from the championship tees, includes the new ninehole layout also developed by Jeff Howes.

The Barryscourt Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 73 course, also incorporates the new nine-hole layout. Signature Hole: Hole 10, Deerpark Course. A lovely down hill par 5, needs a tee shot down the right side of the fairway to comfortably reach this green in 2. The second shot is very dangerous to the green, with water short right and over the back. A good risk reward hole.

Killarney

On leaving Cork Airport: Follow the signs Cork N27. Drive down hill towards the city until Junction with N25 (South Ring). Take the slip road before the Roundabout signposted Killarney, West Cork. Continue on this road (N22), bypassing Ballincollig. On arrival in Killarney, at the roundabout, take the 2nd exit towards Tralee and Limerick. At the roundabout, drive straight through (signpost for Killorglin) and right again at the next roundabout, still heading for Killorglin. The Club is approx 1km on this road and the entrance is on the left.

The Golf & Fishing Club Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has a spectacular lakeside location next to the National Park approximately 3 km from Killarney town centre on the Killorglin - Ring of Kerry Road. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is one of the oldest, well established and internationally recognised Clubs in Ireland. It has a membership of over 1,700 members from all over the world and the Club’s location is one of the most enviable in the World. With 3 Championship courses the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club can offer 3 totally unique options and challenges to the golfer.

The Killeen course is very much the flagship course at the club. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide an imposing backdrop to this Championship course. Reopened in June 2006 the course is slightly longer with faster greens that have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. At 6564 metres it will challenge long hitters with accuracy being vital as there is water on virtually every hole. Nick Faldo on winning The Irish Open in 1991 was one of only three players to finish under par. The challenging golf is matched by the spectacular views with the 10th being a firm favourite where you are playing virtually onto the lake.

Mahony’s Point, the shortest of the three courses has spectacular views of the famous Killarney lakes overlooked by the McGillicuddy Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland. The final three holes are breathtaking as you play towards the lake with the 18th described as “one of the most memorable holes in Golf”, a par three of nearly 200 yards that requires a huge carry across the corner of the lake. Discover for yourself why the 18th is the most photographed in the world.

Lackabane is the newest of the three courses at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. This Parkland course opened officially for play

in 2000. Lakes and streams are a feature throughout the length and breadth of the course, adding beauty and danger in equal measure. At 6410 metres off the very back tees the long game will be tested to the full, as competitors in the 2002 Ladies Irish Open and the European Ryder Cup Challenge Tour participants experienced in 2005. Signature Hole: Mahony’s Point the shortest of the three courses at 6,800 yards is a lakeside course with spectacular views including the famous, breathtaking 18th described by Gene Sarazen as “one of the most memorable holes in the world”.

Monkstown Golf Club rejoices in its distinguished history and its unique setting overlooking Cork’s glorious harbour.
The antiquity of the site is evoked by the ruins of the old castle which provided the members with a distinctive club-house before the ravages of time turned the grand old building into an un-inhabitable place.

Signature Hole 16th hole, Par 3, 172 metres. Stunning shot over water to a back drop of mature trees

The shell that remains is a poignant reminder of past glories and of the once-proud building that enhanced such a glorious and significant site when it was built in 1636. It is fitting that its outline should form the crest of a club that was founded in 1908.

Coming from Waterford: turn right at the second roundabout. Proceed up the hill straight through the next two roundabouts on to the Ring road. The Golf Club is about a mile along the road on the right.

Coming from the Cork road: turn right at the first roundabout. You are now on the Ring road.
Coming from the Dungarvan Coast road turn left at the first roundabout. The Club is 50 meters on your left.

The Old Course, “Championship golf at it’s finest”. It is widely accepted that in 1938 when Captain H.C.C. Tippet laid out Tramore Golf Course something special was created. Visitors over years have spoken fondly of their favourite holes and when Henry Cotton played Harry Bradshaw here in 1937 he described the Par 4, 17th hole as “one of the finest golf holes he had played”. That’s why in 2006 when course designer Jeff Howes was awarded the contract to remodel the original 18 holes it was on the strict understanding that he could only enhance what was already there. Those who are familiar with

the old course marvel at the result and all are in agreement that Jeff Howes excelled at his task. Although the Newtown 9 Hole Course is a relatively new addition at Tramore, early comments are very favorable and a round of golf on it is “Highly Recommended” Signature Holes At 344 meters the Par 4, 17th requires a good drive up the right hand side as access to the green is restricted by tall trees on the left. The elevated green is protected by a bunker at the front and trees at the rear calling for a high degree of accuracy with your second shot.

TRAVEL

Golfing in France French golf holidays are extremely popular, particularly with travellers from Ireland. This is primarily a result of the outstanding golf courses that are littered all over the country, but a trip to France has so much added value.

Amazing culture, art, gastronomy, history and scenery are the foundations of France, and these attractions are extremely appealing, particularly for the non-golfers. With the advent of the Eurotunnel, the already well-known resort towns of Le Touquet and Hardelot, and their phenomenal golf courses, became even more accessible. Just a short drive inland are some superb golf resorts as well. These include, most notably, Chateau des Vigiers with its outstanding hotel and a superb championship 27.

Paris and its majestic surroundings are home to comprehensive resorts like Dolce Chantilly, and famous tracks such as Fontainebleau and Golf National, while heading west to Normandy, Brittany and the Western Loire, the coastline is dotted with charming courses and holiday towns. Trouville, Deauville and La Baule are perfect for a golf and beach holiday, especially if you like a bit of evening action, as they are crammed with restaurants, bars and the odd casino.

From the Atlantic coast to the warm shores of the Mediterranean, France’s South is a real favourite; great resorts and golf courses can be found around the fantastic cities of Biarritz and Bordeaux, while Provence and the Côte d’Azur are ideal for a golf holiday in the near-guaranteed sunshine. The French Alps have also emerged as a golfing destination, particularly with the focus on the LPGA Evian Masters, where the air is rarified and the views are unparalleled.

TRAVEL

The Dordogne Chateau des Vigiers The Golf Course Donald Steel, considered to be one of the very best “natural” golf course architects, created the unique 27 hole course in its enthralling setting amidst plum trees, oak woods, lakes and vineyards. Donald, who has contributed to many world-famous courses such as the Jubilee and Eden courses at St. Andrews as well as Chantilly in France, designed the course with the Château as its centrepiece with the 9th and 18th finishing off in front of the Château. When asked by Golf World to name his favourite hole from his long career, Donald chose the eighteenth at Château des Vigiers, with its dogleg over a ridge for the second shot over the lake on to the green, in front of the Château. It was subsequently described in Golf World under the heading “Vintage Finale”. With the addition of the new 9 hole course in early 2008, golfers now experience a much wider variety of playing conditions. The new 9 hole golf course “La Vallée” opened on the 1st April 2008, and integrates into the exisiting 18 hole course to form 3 new nine hole courses: “La Vallée”, “Le Lac”, “Les Vignes”. Golfers can now play three different configurations of 18 holes, each with different slopes (from 125 to 129). In addition, there are 2 training zones for chipping, bunkers or rolling, a covered range with targets from 50m to 200m and the 6 hole academy course (1035 m). Château des Vigiers’ courses promote quick play and accessibility for higher handicaps. However, the greens are frequently lightning fast and prove a test for any golfer.

The Irish Golf Guide

With strategic pin positions and longer rough, the course can be turned into a challenge for the best golfer. Indeed, one of their Members, Per Ulrik Johansson, who played for the winning European team in both the 1995 and 1997 Ryder Cup, took five years to get down from his initial score of 75 to 66, now the course record. He adds “It is an interesting and enjoyable course with tough greens. There are a few really great holes and a lot of good ones.” John Bickerton, our Touring Pro in 2006 and 2007, equalled Per-Ulrik’s record of 66 in 2007. French golf at its finest... Souillac Golf & Country Club From almost every tee of Souillac Golf & Country Club’s beautiful course there are panoramic views of the surrounding French countryside. This is the only 18 hole golf course in the department of Lot (Midi-Pyrenees) and provides a truly fantastic golfing experience for golfers of all levels. The course, designed by golf course architect Jeremy Pern, is well known for its outstanding level of maintenance, with excellent greens and tree-lined fairways. The official opening of the new 18 hole golf course took place in July 2003, under the watchful eyes of some of France’s most popular Rugby icons, also keen golfers, who came over from nearby Toulouse for the occasion. Since then, the competitive teams of Souillac Golf & Country Club have started to spread their fame far beyond the Dordogne Valley and the South-West of France. Some of the club’s talented young golfers participated in the finals of the 2010 French national youth championship, with promising results. One young member of the club’s golf school has even been invited to join the Toulouse ‘Pôle d’Espoir’, an initiative from the French golfing

federation (FFG) to help prepare the golf champions of the future. On 4 and 5 June 2011, the club will once again be hosting the Mérite Régional des Jeunes des Midi-Pyrénées, a very important competition for young French golfers, with over 100 participants. In July the region’s older generation of golfers will gather at the club to battle it out for the Midi-Pyrenees Senior Golf Championship. Souillac Golf & Country Club has become a very popular destination for French and international golf associations and societies in search of that ideal combination of leisurely golf and a great time. The local golf members are always happy to meet with other golf enthusiasts and to exchange tips and experiences. On 10,11 and 12 June 2011, the club will host the Joie de Vivre Privilege Tour for three days of fantastic golf and gourmet pleasures in the stunningly beautiful Dordogne Valley! Chateau Les Merles Surrounding the Château, on the edge of the beautiful Liorac forest and the Bergerac vineyards, is a forty five acre estate which includes a three thousand meters, nine hole golf course par 35. This challenging and compact golf course provides excellent training for players of all standards. There are water hazards, bunkers and greens which are renowned as the best in the area. Driving range, pitching area with practice bunker and separate putting green are all available at Golf Club Château les Merles.

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
