A Warm Welcome to The Irish Golf Guide Welcome to the third issue of The Irish Golf Guide. This magazine has been designed to help the local and National golfer in selecting and finding the course they wish to play in Ireland. It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit. The Irish Golf Guide has been brought to you by the people who publish the Costa del Sol Golf Guide in Spain, and the North West Golf Guide, and Yorkshire Golf Guide in the UK. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving a similar success in the North of England. This bi-monthly magazine contains in depth reviews of Golf Clubs, Local and International News items, and special promotions. A select number of courses each issue have editorial’s describing the course, the facilities and signature holes and contain the directions to

the course. These editorials are the chance for each club to highlight itself and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period. The magazine is listed in alphabetical order, with the showcase courses being colour coded by the areas they are in. These areas are Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. The full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine containing the address, phone number, email and website of every golf course in Ireland. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels from professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing calendar of events in Ireland for 2011 and beyond. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, and select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from the start of August. Happy golfing from all at the Irish Golf Guide!

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is one of the oldest, most established and internationally recognised clubs in Ireland with a membership of almost 2,000 from all over the world. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is unique in that it is the only true ‘lakeside’ golf club in Ireland. It has some of the attributes of the seaside and the inland, and is nestled amidst the splendour of the famous Killarney lakes with the spectacular backdrop of the MacGillycuddy reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland. This unique corner of the earth has been described as ‘’heavens reflex’’ and the ‘’nearest golf club to heaven’’. With three courses, the club can offer three totally unique options and challenges to the golfer.

Killeen The Killeen course is very much the flagship course at the club. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide an imposing backdrop to this Championship course. Re-opened in June 2006 the course is slightly longer with faster greens that have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. Killeen hosted last year’s Irish Open and the tournament returns to Killarney again in 2011 from July 28th to 31st. Ross Fisher was the winner of last year’s Irish Open where he won in record-equalling style by finishing the tournament 18 under par, matching the

tournament record set ten years ago by Colin Montgomerie. This year’s tournament will see players starting from a newly constructed 1st tee box on Killeen. This new addition extends the course from 6566 to 6590 metres. At 6590 metres it will challenge long hitters with accuracy being vital as there is water on virtually every hole. Nick Faldo on winning The Irish Open in 1991 was one of only three players to finish under par. The challenging golf is matched by the spectacular views with the 10th being a firm favourite where you are playing virtually onto the lake.

• Fabulous lake views on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th holes. • Spectacular par 3 on the 10th virtually playing onto the lake. • Fabulous closing holes with excellent lake views. • The 13th is a very tough Par 4, possibly the toughest hole on the course affectionately known as the ‘Tiger’ Hole.

yourself why the 18th is the most photographed in the world. While Mahony’s Point is the shortest, most scenic and friendly of our three courses, it presents an enjoyable challenge to golfers of all standards, the combination of undulating greens, well positioned bunkers and water hazards ensure that there is enough danger to spoil a good round.

Featured Holes

Mahony’s Point The shortest of our three courses has spectacular views of the famous Killarney lakes overlooked by the MacGillicuddy Reeks. The final three holes are breathtaking as you play towards the lake with the 18th described as “one of the most memorable holes in Golf”, a par three of nearly 200 yards that requires a huge carry across the corner of the lake. Discover for

• Fabulous lake views on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes as well as the 15th, 17th and 18th. • The 2nd and 3rd are two of the strongest par 4s in golf followed closely by the tough 11th. • At the 13th, the spectacular scenery of the lakes comes into view, which never fails to impress even the regulars! • Breathtaking views on the last three with the 18th, the most photographed being described as “Heavens Reflex”.

18th, Lackabane

2nd, Lackabane

Lackabane Lackabane is the newest of the three courses at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. This Parkland course opened officially for play in 2000. Lakes and streams are a feature throughout the length and breadth of the course, adding beauty and danger in equal measure. At 6410 metres off the very back tees the long game will be tested to the full, as competitors in the 2002 Ladies Irish Open and the European Ryder Cup Challenge Tour participants experienced

in 2005. This course is suited to mid to low handicap golfers and is an excellent test of the long game. It is a course that requires thought and rewards good shots. It is a seriously good test of golf with hazards and water features with a good variety of holes. The 3rd is a par 4 of less than 300 yards, while the 7th is a par 5 that stretches to almost 600 yards. It’s fast undulating greens can prove every bit as challenging as Augusta National.

Featured Holes • Lake views from the High Tee’s on the 4th and 6th. • Lakes on 11th & 12th, signature holes as well as the 3rd and 15th. • The toughest hole is the 18th, a long par 4 plays into the prevailing wind.

WORLD NEWS

The Ryder Cup France will host for the first time in 2018 The historic announcement, which will see golf’s greatest team event return to the Continent of Europe for the first time in 21 years, was made by Ryder Cup Europe at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. Le Golf National on the outskirts of Versailles near Paris, the well-established home of the Alstom Open de France, will become only the second Continental venue – following Club de Golf, Valderrama, in Spain in 1997 - when the 42nd edition of The Ryder Cup between Europe and the United States is contested in the autumn of 2018. Five nations – France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain – had participated in an exhaustive and comprehensive Bid Process – the first conducted by Ryder Cup Europe - to identify the country best qualified to follow Medinah Country Club, Illinois, USA, next year; Gleneagles, Scotland, in 2014 and Hazeltine, Minnesota, USA, in 2016 as host of the biennial contest. George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour – the Managing Partner of Ryder Cup Europe – made the official announcement

at the iconic Wentworth Club, a venue which in 1926 had staged an international match recognised as the forerunner to The Ryder Cup itself one year later. Also in attendance were delegates from the five Bid Nations, the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland, the PGAs of Europe, high ranking officials from the world of golf and the media, as France received the seal of approval to host The 2018 Ryder Cup. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, had led a four-strong Bid Committee, comprising 2018 Bid Director David MacLaren, Ryder Cup Match Director Edward Kitson and Financial Director Jonathan Orr, to examine and evaluate each Bid, including a series of thorough site inspections to the five countries who had confirmed their desire to stage The Ryder Cup in seven years’ time. A sixth, Sweden, had dropped out of the race in the spring of 2010.

Earlier this year, all five nations signed Conditional Host Agreements and the fully binding legal contract with France was triggered immediately on the announcement that they have become the successful candidate for the 2018 match. France has hosted 118 European Tour, 60 European Challenge Tour and 12 European Senior Tour events. Ten French golfers have won 24 tournaments on The European Tour and 36 players have gained 51 wins on the European Challenge Tour while Thomas Levet and Jean Van de Velde have represented Europe in The Ryder Cup in 2004 and 1999 respectively. Le Golf National, an impressive ‘stadium’ course which has received high praise over the past 20 years, will next month stage the 2011 Alstom Open de France for the tenth successive year and the 19th time in total since its inception 1991.

The Irish Open

The Irish Open The Irish Contenders The Irish Open returns to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club in County Kerry for a second consecutive year following the huge success of the tournament in 2010.

Packed galleries watched Englishman Ross Fisher capture the title, holding off the surge off Padraig Harrington. That was the tournaments first return to Killarney in 18 years and was also played at the end of July for the first time, having vacated its traditional May slot. First played in 1927, last year the Irish Open had a fairytale winner when Irishman Shane Lowry became only the third amateur to win on The European Tour. The prize fund for the 2011 Irish Open will be confirmed at a later date but to claim the lion’s share the eventual winner will have to conquer not only a high quality field but also the Killeen Course itself. The jewel in the crown of the three-course Killarney Golf Complex was originally designed in 1972 by Eddie Hackett and Billy O’Sullivan. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide a stunning backdrop to the course itself. Here we present the profiles of the Irish players who will hopefully be battling it out for the 2011 Irish Open.

Padraig Harrington – 2010 Finished 2nd Padraig Harrington is an Irish golfing legend having won three Majors in recent times and he will be one of the favourites for the 2011 IrishOpen. He has over 11 tournament wins but won his first ‘major’ Tournament in 2007 when he won the British Open after a play off with Sergio Garcia. Earlier that year he had also won the Irish Open at this venue. He is now one of the World’s top golfers and is already being hailed as the greatest Irish golfer of all time. Padraig’s 2007 win at in the British Open at Carnoustie was the first ‘major’ Tournament victory by a European for 8 years and followed Paul Lawrie’s success of 1999 at the same Tournament and at the same venue. He followed up his British Open win in 2007 with another Claret Jug in 2008 and a PGA Championship in the same year, he really made a mark for Europe in America and he will always be remembered for that. His form has slightly dipped in the times since which is a slight worry for him and his fans, so he will be desperate to find his best form here at the Irish Open.

The Irish Open

Graeme McDowell – 2010 Finished tied 31st The popular Ulsterman has won seven events on the European Tour, including the 2010 U.S. Open which was also his first win on the PGA Tour. He has also represented Ireland at the World Cup and been a

The Irish Golf Guide

member of the European Ryder Cup team. Before turning professional, McDowell had a successful amateur career both in Ireland and in the United States, where he won many tournaments and was recognised as the most outstanding collegiate golfer in 2002.

He also represented Ireland internationally and was a member of the triumphant Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team in 2001. He will surely be a big favourite at Killarney, and would love to add the Irish Open to his growing list of achievements.

13

14

The Irish Golf Guide

The Irish Open

Rory Mcilroy – 2010 Finished Tied 35th 21-year old Rory McIlroy needs little introduction as his rise to fame and golfing fortune have been headline news all season for the past few years. He comes to the Irish Open aiming to win it for the first time and he will no doubt be one of the favourites. Rory proved himself to be an outstanding links player when, as an amateur, he was very prominent on the British Open leaderboard at Carnoustie and it is a style of golf course that he relishes. That should well stand him in good stead at the Killarney Club and he has more than enough talent to win this tournament.

The Irish Open

Shane Lowry – 2010 Finished tied 21st Shane became only the third amateur to win a European Tour title - when he captured The 3 Irish Open at County Louth Golf Club in Baltray. Aged 22, Lowry beat England’s Robert Rock at the third play-off hole. In January 2010, he finished in fourth place in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, moving him into the top-100 of the Official World Golf Rankings. In June 2010, Lowry qualified for his first major championship, the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews. During the qualification, Lowry equalled Nick Faldo’s course record at Sunningdale when he posted a 62. Lowry went on to make the cut at St Andrews and eventually finished in a tie for 37th place. He is surely one to watch at Killarney. Paul McGinley – 2010 Finshed tied 14th One of the best known golfers on the European Tour, Irishman, Paul McGinley would like nothing more than to win the Irish Open Golf Championship. He has been close before, but certainly has the ability to win and this could well be his time. He has faded away somewhat in recent times and appears to have seen his best days but nevertheless he is still capable of stringing together one or two good rounds. Michael Hoey – 2010 Finished 7th Early in 2009, Hoey finished runner-up to Retief Goosen in the Africa Open on the Sunshine Tour. Then in April, he claimed his first European Tour title, at the Estoril Open de Portugal where he defeated Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño on the third hole of a sudden death playoff. The win also gave him a one-year exemption on the European Tour. Hoey represented Ireland, alongside Gareth Maybin at the 2007 Omega Mission Hills World Cup where they finished in 24th position. With his high placing at the same venue in 2010, Michael is sure to be one of the local favourites for 2011 at Killarney.

The Irish Golf Guide

Darren Clarke – 2010 Finished tied 12th Until recently Darren had struggled to find any real form in recent European Tour events, though he did manage a win on the Asia circuit in April 2008. He has been fighting to regain

his best form which at its heights is is a match for the very best in the world. He should never be ignored by any golf punters, and with his recent win in May at the Iberdrola Open, could we be seeing Darren back to his best?

TRIBUTE

by Paul Eales

It was a very sad day for golf with the news of the death of Seve Ballesteros after a long battle with cancer. Like many millions of golfers and golf fans I grew up watching the daring deeds of he swashbuckling Spanish genius on TV.

I don’t think I ever relaxed during that round but Seve was charming and so considerate helping me out as the crowds rushed to get into position to watch him, forgetting I still had shots to play.

I was fortunate and privileged to play with Seve on many occasions on the European Tour. The aura and charisma he had is hard to describe, needless to say no other golfer came close. Every player would stop and watch Seve on the driving range and marvel at the imagination and skills he showed whilst just playing and hitting shots.

On Seve’s passing Jack Nicklaus said “Golf has lost a great champion and a great friend. We have also lost a great entertainer and ambassador for our sport. It was his creativity, his imagination and his desire to compete that made him so popular not only in Europe but throughout American galleries too.”

He was also very generous with his time always willing to help other players with their games, passing on tips and advice. I remember the first time I played with Seve I felt so nervous, like a schoolboy going to see the headmaster on his first day at school. He stood on the 1st tee swishing his driver dominating his world, the golf course.

Tiger Woods said of Seve: “Seve was one of the most talented and exciting golfers to ever play the game. His creativity and inventiveness on the golf course may never be surpassed.” Seve’s passion transcended golf and was appreciated around the world in other sports. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic committee said: “Seve was a man

of incredible skill, charisma and courage as a sportsman, and the dignified way that he fought against the disease was characteristic of the man and was an inspiration to us all. He was a ‘once in a generation athlete’ in his sport and his influence on the game will live long after him.” Of course we all remember Seve leading European teams in the Ryder Cup matches as well as the iconic celebration on the 18th green at St Andrews in 1984 after holing a birdie putt to win his second Open Championship. He was 16 years old when he turned professional and aged just 19 when he won the first of his 50 European Tour titles. European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady said: “We have all been blessed to live in his era. He was the inspiration behind The European Tour.” Severiano Ballesteros RIP

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS

The Solheim Cup Alison Nicholas, MBE

Alison Nicholas MBE, The 2011 European Solheim Cup Captain, comments on the thrill of the Solheim Cup competition, on Killeen Castle and on Ireland as a good destination.

On the thrill of the Solheim Cup competition It’s one of the best events on the ladies professional tour. You’ve got 24 of the world’s best players playing against each other so it’s a pressure packed, exciting contest. Anyone that’s experienced The Solheim Cup has enjoyed the event which is the biggest in ladies’ golf.

I think the short holes are very challenging; the sixth hole; the 16th; then 17 and 18 are two good finishing holes. On the 18th green you need to get the ball in the right place or it will be very difficult to get a birdie or a par. It rewards good iron play and you have to get your ball in the right place otherwise it will be difficult to score. There are some good natural amphitheatres around the course for viewing.

On Killeen Castle On Ireland as a golf destination It’s a great golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus. The greens are the trickiest part, I think. The fairways are fairly generous but you have to place your ball on the right part of the green otherwise it can be a very hard up and down. I think the short game will play a big part. If you hit your irons well and get them on the right part of the green then you’ll do well.

It’s a brilliant place. I have been doing these clinics around the country and there are some great people: they are passionate about the game. There are some great golf courses around Ireland and it’s a great place to visit: it’s as simple as that. There are many great golf courses to play and it’s a very hospitable nation.

The 2011 Solheim Cup will be held on September 23-25 2011 at Killeen Castle, Co. Meath. For more information visit: www.solheimcup.com Killeen Castle is a unique development set in the historic grounds of one of Ireland’s oldest and finest 12th century Norman castles. REGIONAL NEWS

St. Anne’s Golf Club A Rich History and a Bright Future

St. Anne’s G.C was founded 90 years ago and the memories of triple crowns and the great Paddy Skerritt are still vivid in the minds of many members. However this hidden gem in the heart of Dublin intends to build on this history to create an even brighter future.

Development works in recent years have provided a course that is now ranked among Ireland’s finest, and the impressive links (Par 71) is both a challenge and a pleasure to play, surrounded as it is by the Irish Sea on one side and the peace and tranquility of a beautiful nature reserve on the other. The state of the art clubhouse offers excellent pre and post game hospitality as well as fantastic panoramic views of Dublin bay, while the club still retains the warm and friendly atmosphere that St. Anne’s has long been renowned for. Visitors and golf societies continue to recognise this by returning year after year. The club is even more vibrant having recently welcomed more than 100 new members who will help to forge future success both on and off the course.

In 2010, the club received a great boost when Anna Courtney (pictured right) triumphed in the Leinster Girl’s Championship at Balbriggan GC. Anna’s triumph was quickly followed by her selection to play for Ireland in the Home International Matches at Bangor GC., becoming the first St. Anne’s member to receive international honours. Anna hit the opening tee shot in the matches and went on to become one of Ireland’s leading point’s scorers. Anna’s undoubted talent, which had been evident from an early age, developed to its current level through a combination of the club’s forward thinking junior golf program, the support of her parents who are themselves active golfers, but most of all her own dedication to the game. Visitors sitting in the club house must have often looked out over the course towards the practice area, chipping area or putting

green and seen an elegant young lady working away at her game in all types of weather. The strength’s of Anna’s game are her prodigious length, a sound putting stroke, and a calm unflappable demeanour that sees her execute critical shots with apparent ease. Anna is the third generation of her family to play at St. Anne’s, and she shares a common understanding with all other members about what makes it special - a fantastic golf course with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Play-off joy for Moynihan at Faldo Series in Ireland

Donabate’s Gavin Moynihan was celebrating a place in the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final after emerging triumphant over Evan Farrell in a play-off to win the fourth Faldo Series Ireland Championship at Lough Erne Resort in County Fermanagh.

Joining Moynihan at the World Amateur Golf Ranking event hosted by Sir Nick Faldo will be Boys’ Under-21 winner Dan Murphy from Portarlington, Boys’ Under-16 champion Niall Foley, also from The Island, and winner of the girls’ division Victoria Bradshaw from Bangor.

A hat-trick of birdies on holes 15 to 17 of the Faldo Course at Lough Erne sealed a levelpar final round for Moynihan and a 36-hole total of 146 following his opening 74.

Established in 1996, 35 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 25 countries worldwide with over 5,000 golfers participating each year. Former winners include Lough Erne’s touring professional Rory McIlroy, plus Nick Dougherty, Marc Warren, John Parry, Melissa Reid, Florentyna Parker and Yani Tseng, all winners on Tour.

The 16 year-old then took that momentum into a play-off with co-leader Farrell (72-74) and defeated his opponent from Ardee, also 16, with another birdie on the first extra hole. The Irish Golf Guide

Ireland Regional Overview

Ireland Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, and the twentieth largest island in the world. Historically, Ireland is divided into four ancient provinces, Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. There are thirtytwo counties within those provinces. For tourism the country is divided into regions which may cross over provinces. This history is reflected in the warm hospitality, underrated delicious traditional dishes, brilliant music, and beautiful landscape. Whether enjoying a morning breakfast at a B&B, downing a pint or two in a pub, experiencing the local artists, or hiking along a seaside cliff, it is hard not to feel a part of the dramatic culture and rich history that is Ireland. Throughout the entire island of Ireland there are thousands of lakes and rivers that are natural wonders. In addition, Ireland’s ancient past makes it an archeological paradise, with many sites dating back thousands of years. There is so much to

explore and experience, that no matter where you travel in Ireland, it will be a fantastic exploration, with unsurpassed hospitality. The scenery is ever changing, simply spectacular, and literally unfolds before your eyes. All over Ireland you can enjoy the outdoors from fishing to golf, horse riding to water sports. Local eateries offer a wide range of food from simple to fine dining. However, whether plain or fancy, the fare is usually fresh, often home grown, and absolutely fantastic. Ireland is a golfer’s paradise - if you are prepared for changing weather, strong winds and challenging courses. The older Irish courses are legend, the new ones getting there. Choosing the perfect courses for a golfing tour of Ireland is a hard task, that is why The Irish Golf Guide is your perfect partner for choosing the course that is right for you. Whether you want famous links courses, classic parkland or luxurious golf resorts, Ireland has it all.

ARKLOW Golf Links

How to Find Follow the M50/M11 southbound and continue onto the N11 southbound. Take the first exit for Arklow. Cross Hoey’s bridge and take left up South Quay. Turn right up S. Green to junction. Take left facing Dainty Bakery Shop onto Tinahask Road. Take next right up Tinahask Road Lower. Take right fork at The Wicklow Baptist Church up St Michael’s Tce. Head straight up the hill and into Arklow Golf Links.

Arklow Golf Club was formed in 1927. Since the very beginning, the Club has extended a warm and inviting welcome to all of its visitors from at home and from overseas. Your friends at Arklow will ensure that your visit is much more than a great round of golf. South Wicklow’s beauty, the adjacent Irish Sea, reasonable rates and extraordinary service will guarantee your personal satisfaction above all else. This traditional links was originally formed by Hawtree & Taylor and has evolved with the aid of inputs from Eddie Hackett and in recent times Eddie Connaughton. The links has been described as a hidden jewel and the

Southern Region of the Irish PGA held their 2001 and 2002 Championships on this links. Signature Hole Hole 2, Par 4, ‘The Graveyard’ This is a stiff test as the green is unsighted from the tee due to a large dune. It is best to drive to the left of the fairway which avoids heavy rough on right and opens up a good view of the green. Difficult undulations on the green make this a tough par 4 and well worthy of its Index 6. The name derives from the distant past when it was an animal graveyard. Designer and five times (5) Open Champion J H Taylor considered this hole to be the best test of golf on the course.

How to Find

Athlone

From the East: Follow signs for Galway on the M6 motorway. Continue past Athlone on the bypass. Cross over the River Shannon bridge and take the Roscommon Exit (N61). Continue towards Roscommon for approximately 5kms. Athlone Golf Club is well sign posted and located to your right.

Athlone Golf Club was founded in 1892 making it one of the longest established clubs in the country. It is a superb 18-hole parkland course situated on the shores of Lough Ree in the centre of the country bounded on three sides by picturesque Lough Ree. Beautifully designed, the course exploits the natural splendour of its surroundings, affording from its vantage points and from the modern strategically appointed clubhouse, with panoramic views of the lake and its wooded islands. Its tree-lined fairways and undulating terrain make it a true test of golf for all standards of golfer.

Athlone Golf Club has hosted many provincial and national championships, including the All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals in 1998. Also, in 2007, the All Ireland Mixed and All Ireland Ladies Championships were held here. Signature Hole: 13th, 396m par 4. A severe dogleg right to left, you drive over “the saddle” into a valley. The braver you are with your tee shot, the shorter the blind approach to the relatively small green, protected by a bunker to the left and mounds and hollows to the right. A par is a great score on any day. Anything higher and you will want to go back and play it again… but differently!

Our course, which has been in play since June, 2003, was designed by Des Smyth (2006 Ryder Cup Vice-Captain) and Declan Brannigan and is a striking example of modern design with old style golfing values. It provides the perfect environment for all golfers. The design strategy involved a tiered effect for the

fairways, thereby negating to a large degree the effect of the sloping site on which the course was constructed. As a result a large number of the holes are relatively flat. The course was constructed using modern construction methods and the sand based USGA specification greens provide wonderful putting surfaces all year round. The choice of three tees on each hole provides the player with three different tests of golf. The Blue tees total 5990 metres in length, with the white measuring 5645 metres and the yellow tees 5188 metres.

CityWest Hotel

From Dublin City Centre, Dublin Port and Dun Laoghaire Port: Follow signs for the West or the South. You will come to the M50 (Dublin orbital). Follow signs for the South and exit the M50 onto the N7 (towards Limerick and Cork). After about 4 miles you will see signs for Citywest Business Campus, ignore them and take the following exit marked by brown traffic signs for Citywest Hotel. Exit off the N7 and carry straight on for about a mile. Citywest Hotel is on your right.

Located in the grounds of this Dublin hotel, The Christy O’ Connor Jnr Championship course is a first class test of golf in a wonderful parkland setting covering a distance of over 6,010 yards. This par 69 course offers the combination of perfectly manicured fairways, superb putting surfaces and beautiful trees that provide the golfer with a wonderful and inspiring golf experience. Our expert Golf Team are always on hand to provide assistance for any of your needs whether it be a day out with friends, group & society outings or special corporate & charity events.

The 18th Hole is one of the great finishing holes in Ireland. As the golfer stands on the tee-box, they are faced with an inspirational par 4 that demands an acute level of accuracy. To successfully hit the fairway from the tee, the golfer must manoeuvre their ball through a narrow gap that is protected by mature trees on both sides, while at the same time avoiding the first of two lakes that runs down the left hand side of the fairway. Having successfully hit the fairway, the golfer is then faced with a daunting 2nd shot to the green, the main obstacle being a lake that runs right up to the front edge of the green. A good score at this hole will certainly make the 19th hole even more enjoyable.

Cobh Golf Club is unique in that it remains the latest members owned club to be affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland. It enjoys a vibrant membership with a friendly welcoming atmosphere to guests and visitors alike. The new course opened for full play in June 2009. This parkland style course is situated at Marino Point, and is 2 miles outside the picturesque town of Cobh in Cork Harbour. It is an 18 hole championship standard golf course with USGA specification greens and a genuine Island Green at the par3 10th. The magnificent site at Marino is

located in an elevated position and offers stunning views of the inner harbour, the estuary and surrounding countryside. Signature Hole Hole 10, Par 3, 167 Yards (Blue Tee) Located on the highest point of the golf course, with spectacular panoramic view, is every golfers dream (and nightmare), a Par 3 with an island green. The length of the hole is 170 metres from the back tee, but the drop down to the green is over 12 metres, so the hole plays much shorter than its length suggests. Additionally the green has plenty of gently sloping surrounds.

Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club Newmarket-on-Fergus Clare

Dromoland Castle

Telephone:+353 061 368144 sales@dromoland.ie www.dromoland.ie

How to Find Dromoland Castle is ideally located 8 miles from Shannon Airport in Clare just outside Newmarket on Fergus. The proximity of this beautiful castle hotel in Clare Ireland to other major cities in the South /South West of Ireland make it an ideal location for touring: 19 miles from Limerick city, 48 miles from Galway city, 80 miles from Cork city and 88 miles from Killarney.

Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club has been in existence since 1962 and golf has been played for 43 years over the lush rolling tree lined landscape that drains into Dromoland Lough with the Castle as a backdrop. The course was entirely revamped in 2004 at a cost of over €5million, and has subsequently been refined and polished over the following few years. The Course architects, Ron Kirby and the late JB Carr teamed up again following their success at the Old Head of Kinsale. The result is nothing short of spectacular and places Dromoland at the vanguard of “must play” golf destinations on the island of Ireland.

Already the course has earned a reputation equalling that of Adare and Mount Juliet and the quality of the greens and tees is compared very favourably to the very best worldwide. Dromoland Castle golf resort is one of the finest 5 star hotels in Ireland and now has a golf course to equal the splendour of the setting. Visitors to the course have eloquently described it as “the Augusta of Ireland”. Our signature hole is the par 3, 7th at 179 yards. Large lake vista with Dromoland castle as a background, well shaped green with green side bunker on the right and a feature pond short and left of the green.

There are few places in the world that encapsulate the true spirit of the game of golf like Druids Heath. The Mountains, Sea and rolling Irish Countryside provide stunning vistas throughout your round. The sea breeze calls for shot-making skills and imagination from the golfer.

In the words of Pat Ruddy “Druids Heath affords the player the opportunity to stride-out in a place which is invigorating to both body and soul with the ever present sea breezes adding greatly to a sporting challenge, which is quite difficult to concentrate on as the eye wanders eagerly fifty miles out to sea, twenty miles southwards over an unspoiled, rolling pastoral scene to Wicklow Head and inland to the Wicklow Mountains. Dull would he be of soul who would allow a few stray shots spoil a day in such a blessed spot”. Venue for the 2006 Irish PGA Championship, Druids Heath has played host to many of the worlds leading Tour Players.

EdmonDstown

From the Airport merge onto M50 Southbound. At exit 12, take left slip road left to Knocklyon/Ballyboden/Firhouse. Go straight through two roundabouts. At 3rd roundabout take last exit onto Ballyboden Road. Keep straight onto R116 Edmondstown is on left hand side. From Dublin/Christchurch Place N81. Turn left to stay on N81/Nicholas Street. Keep straight onto R114. Turn left onto Rathfarnham Road. Turn right onto R115/ Willbrook Road. At roundabout, take 2nd exit . Keep straight onto R116 Edmondstown is on left hand side. Possessing a fair but testing reputation, Edmondstown Golf Club, in delightful environs in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains 7 miles to the south and west of the city centre, is a well maintained and manicured course in elevated deciduous parkland. Major focal points of the course are the secluded 4th and 6th holes, which are isolated from the remainder of the course by a meandering stream, drawing the golfer into a difficult shot to the green; indeed the aforementioned 6th remains one of the best inland par fours in Ireland. The Club plays host to many outings during

the year and can provide first class food and drink in a friendly atmosphere. It is this friendliness which members cherish among themselves and which ensures that visitors are made to feel welcome. Signature Hole: Hole 6 - Par 4 - 382 Metres The elevated tee yields a beautiful view of this well protected green, surrounded by river (front), as well as bunkers and ponds. But don’t spend too much time enjoying the scenery. Try to leave approach short of pin, as the green slopes strongly from back to front. Par is a good score, as danger lurks around every turn...

From Cork Airport Take the E30 as far as the Cobh Exit, approximately nine miles (15 kilometres) east of Cork. Follow the R264 towards Cobh for approximately two miles (three kilometres). Follow signs for Fota Island Golf Club and the resort is on the left.

Fota Island Golf Club is just a few minutes drive from Cork City’s international airport. Located in the heart of a 780 acre estate which is included in “The Inventory of Outstanding Landscapes in Ireland”. The splendid woodlands are woven into three challenging championship courses which are very much in the traditional mode, featuring strategically placed bunkers and undulating putting surfaces. The Deerpark Course at Fota Island Golf Club with its receptive greens and strategic bunkering impresses even the most experienced professionals. The Deerpark was proud to host the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002.

The Belvelly Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 72 course stretching over 7121 yards from the championship tees, includes the new ninehole layout also developed by Jeff Howes. The Barryscourt Course at Fota Island Resort, a Par 73 course, also incorporates the new nine-hole layout. Signature Hole: Hole 10, Deerpark Course. A lovely down hill par 5, needs a tee shot down the right side of the fairway to comfortably reach this green in 2. The second shot is very dangerous to the green, with water short right and over the back. A good risk reward hole.

GALWAY BAY

How to Find

The Natural water hazard is the Atlantic Ocean; such is the dramatic backdrop to this Par 72 PGA Championship 18 hole golf course that is Galway Bay Golf Resort. When designing the course, former Ryder Cup and World Cup golfer Christy O’Connor Jnr superbly blended the stunning backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged curves of the Atlantic coastline with gentle undulating mounding along the fairways, water hazards, concealed bunkers and highly acclaimed putting surfaces. With variable wind speed and directions this Championship Galway golf course plays

differently each day posing a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicap golfers, yet it is a true and fair test of golf. After your round you can savour the moment with fond memories in the clubhouse looking out on the spectacular course as it winds its way along the shoreline of Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Signature Hole: Hole 14. The par 5 14th is the signature hole playing 555 yards from the tips. The risk and reward left to right dog leg layout allows those who are able to cut the corner out over the bay to easily reach the green in two.

Hollywood Lakes Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Ballyboughal village, in North County Dublin. It lies within a 20 minute drive from Dublin Airport. Consequently, it is ideally located for golfers travelling from abroad.

Combine this element of the design with a multitude of trees and it is easy to see where the challenge emanates from. A full bar and catering service is available in the friendly atmosphere of the clubhouse.

Designed by Mel Flanagan, who made major improvements during 2002, this 18-hole parkland golf course measures 6707 yards from the championship tees including a 641 yard par 5 and comprises a par of 72. This course is truly a test for every category of golfer. Currently there are 11 lakes and water features that sees water impact on 9 out of the 18 holes.

Our signature hole in most members’ eyes would be our 8th. Measuring just 379 yards it is a dog leg left and its degree of difficulty has increased since the introduction of a new bunker to the left of the green just in front of the water. A three wood off the tee leaves a mid-iron to a green which slopes from back to front and no matter where you are on the green you will have a very slick putt.

How to Find

Killarney

On leaving Cork Airport: Follow the signs Cork N27. Drive down hill towards the city until Junction with N25 (South Ring). Take the slip road before the Roundabout signposted Killarney, West Cork. Continue on this road (N22), bypassing Ballincollig. On arrival in Killarney, at the roundabout, take the 2nd exit towards Tralee and Limerick. At the roundabout, drive straight through (signpost for Killorglin) and right again at the next roundabout, still heading for Killorglin. The Club is approx 1km on this road and the entrance is on the left.

The Golf & Fishing Club Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has a spectacular lakeside location next to the National Park approximately 3 km from Killarney town centre on the Killorglin - Ring of Kerry Road. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is one of the oldest, well established and internationally recognised Clubs in Ireland. It has a membership of over 1,700 members from all over the world and the Club’s location is one of the most enviable in the World. With 3 Championship courses the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club can offer 3 totally unique options and challenges to the golfer.

The Killeen course is very much the flagship course at the club. The Killarney lakes and high mountain range provide an imposing backdrop to this Championship course. Reopened in June 2006 the course is slightly longer with faster greens that have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. At 6564 metres it will challenge long hitters with accuracy being vital as there is water on virtually every hole. Nick Faldo on winning The Irish Open in 1991 was one of only three players to finish under par. The challenging golf is matched by the spectacular views with the 10th being a firm favourite where you are playing virtually onto the lake.

Lackabane is the newest of the three courses at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. This Parkland course opened officially for play

in 2000. Lakes and streams are a feature throughout the length and breadth of the course, adding beauty and danger in equal measure. At 6410 metres off the very back tees the long game will be tested to the full, as competitors in the 2002 Ladies Irish Open and the European Ryder Cup Challenge Tour participants experienced in 2005. Signature Hole: Mahony’s Point the shortest of the three courses at 6,800 yards is a lakeside course with spectacular views including the famous, breathtaking 18th described by Gene Sarazen as “one of the most memorable holes in the world”.

Monkstown Golf Club rejoices in its distinguished history and its unique setting overlooking Cork’s glorious harbour.
The antiquity of the site is evoked by the ruins of the old castle which provided the members with a distinctive club-house before the ravages of time turned the grand old building into an un-inhabitable place.

Signature Hole 16th hole, Par 3, 172 metres. Stunning shot over water to a back drop of mature trees

The shell that remains is a poignant reminder of past glories and of the once-proud building that enhanced such a glorious and significant site when it was built in 1636. It is fitting that its outline should form the crest of a club that was founded in 1908.

Keen rate offered to Societies of €35.00 per head

Mount Juliet Golf Course opened in 1991 with a match featuring golfing legends Christy O’Connor Snr. and Jack Nicklaus. The beautiful and challenging Mount Juliet golf course has established itself as a premier golfing venue for Top Professionals and leisure golfers worldwide. Chosen as the first and only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in Ireland, the “Golden Bear” was meticulous and pain-staking in his design and overseeing of the construction of his great creation. In preparation for the WGC - American Express Golf Championship that was held here in September 2002 and again in 2004,

the Jack Nicklaus design team instigated some extensions and new features to the course, showing Mount Juliet’s continued pursuit of golfing excellence. Signature Holes: Feature holes on Mount Juliet Golf Course include the stunning 3rd hole, a par 3 from an elevated tee to a green guarded by a natural stream and lake... one that golfers always remember. Also the par 5, 10th hole with its copse of trees which tests the golfers strategy. The final hole, a long par 4 with water all down the left and a narrow approach to the green has decided many a tournament result.

Palmerstown House truly is a golfer’s paradise. The Palmerstown House Estate is comprised of 800 acres of magnificent countryside that has been nurtured for generations to create a setting of splendid undulating meadows that are broken by forests of wonderful woodlands, sparkling lakes and

sinuous streams. Course designer Christy O’Connor Junior weaves the golfing tapestry effortlessly without disturbing any of this great estates magnificent character and charm. Christy O’Connor Junior singles out the 7th hole as one of his favourites. To ensure that the golfer is not faced with a blind second shot it is necessary to try and reach the corner of the dogleg with the tee shot. The golfer is then left with a short approach into a small contoured green. He calls this green ‘his fun green’ and with three different levels and a myriad of slopes and contours it is crucial for the golfer to land their approach shot as close to the pin as possible.

The Old Tom Morris Links has been attracting golfers for over a century and now, with the addition of the magnificent Sandy Hills Links , Rosapenna is set to become one of the top links destinations in the world. Both links courses provide a true seaside challenge for all levels of players. Old Tom Morris Links In 1891, while a guest of Lord Leitrim at his nearby estate, Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews, a winner of four British Opens in the 1860’s, took a drive to enjoy the Donegal scenery. Morris was quick to see the golfing potential of this fine stretch of Donegal coast line and before

returning to the home of golf he had stakedout the first Rosapenna Links, incorporating wide rolling fairways amidst the undulating terrain and of course those delightful greens. Play a piece of history created by the father of modern golf. As with most good links courses, the Old Tom Morris Links takes advantage of natural terrain to provide a classic links golf challenge Sandy Hills Links Sandy Hills. Remember the name! This course, opened in June 2003, is set to become one of the most famous golf courses in Ireland.

Then take the right hand exit (Monasterboice) from the first roundabout. Go straight at next roundabout. At the 3rd roundabout take the first left for the Monasterboice exit. Continue on this road and follow the signs to Termonfeckin. When you arrive in Termonfeckin you will be opposite a church. Turn left and cross a hump back bridge. Take the next right which will be signposted for Seapoint Golf Club which is 1 mile further on the right hand side. The challenge at Seapoint begins from the first tee embarking onto a testing 7,150 yard Par 72 course set on 260 acres of magnificent links land. There is an abundance of natural vegetation and wonderful dunes awaiting any errant shot. Every club in the bag is required to play this championship course. Progress through a front nine with a slightly heath land feel with an abundance of gorse and mature tress lining the boundary of the course. Water comes into play on 5 of the holes. The back nine drift close to the sea and are characterised by uneven fairways, thick rough and deep bunkers, requiring

accuracy both off the tee and into the greens. Continuing home to the clubhouse presents little time to relax with the last three holes weaving through dunes and distracting the golfer with panoramic views and a strong sea breeze - pure links enjoyment. Signature Hole: Hole 11, Par 4. Placement off the tee is key at this hole, find the left hand side of the fairway just short of the bunker and you are in prime position. Be careful with the second shot as it is uphill and players tend to come up short. This is a beautiful par 4 and you will travel a long way to find one better.

Forming part of a magnificent 300 acre estate, including 50 acres of lakes, our highly acclaimed 18-hole championship course is sensitively wrapped around the lakes and the drumlins of the County Cavan landscape. The course presents a wonderful challenge and the devilishly tricky greens present a searching examination of accurate approach play, which adds to the enjoyment factor.

The Slieve Russell Hotel Golf & Country Club has hosted some major European Challenge Tour and Irish PGA Tournaments. These include, the Buzz.com North West of Ireland Open, the Irish PGA Championship and also the Quinn Insurance PGA Charity Pro-Am, which has been held since 1997 and has now become an annual event and boasts the highest prize fund for Irish PGA Professionals.

Not surprisingly the complex has always proved very popular with visiting golf groups from all over Ireland, the UK and Europe and many return on a regular basis to sample our renowned hospitality.

Whilst every hole on the golf course is a challenge, the par 5 13th is the signature hole with its fairway hugging the shores of one of the course’s natural lakes offering a risk/reward opportunity on every shot.

St. Anne’s

From the M50: Continue to the very end of the M50, following signs for Malahide. You are now on the N32. Go straight through the traffic lights at Clare Hall. Keep straight, passing through one small roundabout. At next roundabout, take the 3rd exit in the direction of Donaghmede. Turn right at the T-Junction and take the 1st left onto Raheny Road. Go straight at traffic lights and turn left at T-Junction onto Watermill Road. Keep straight at traffic lights that bring you onto the Causeway Road. The entrance to St. Anne’s is on the left hand side. St. Anne’s Golf Club is an impressive links with a par of 71. There is not one ’pushover’ hole on the entire course and wind conditions can be a major factor in how the course is played. There are 408 Golf clubs in Ireland, but only 53 of these are links courses, and St. Anne’s are proud to be one of this exclusive ’club’.

with a new state-of-the-art clubhouse and significant development to the course itself. This included the building of five new greens and eight new tee complexes. The sacred turf of the old Croke Park pitch was used to great effect in developing, strengthening and giving real definition to the back nine in St. Anne’s.

The unique setting of this famous old links, with the splendid panoramic views of Howth Head and across Dublin Bay to the Wicklow mountains, ensures a most relaxing and enjoyable game. Founded in 1921, it is a member-owned golf club. In 2003 an extensive redevelopment of the course was completed,

Hole 7, “Brent”, Par 4, 472 yards (Blue Tee). The seventh hole is surely one of the strongest Par 4’s in North County Dublin. This long demanding hole requires an accurate drive to the right hand side of the fairway in order to set up a shot to the semi blind green. To play this hole in par is a delight whatever your handicap.

The Heritage is a par 72 Championship golf course set in the beautiful rolling countryside of Co. Laois with the Slieve Bloom Mountains as a backdrop. Designed by Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes, this championship course provides the most enjoyable experience for golfers of all standards in Ireland. Five lakes and a stream meander through the course and brings water into play on 10 holes. 98 beautifully shaped bunkers and 7,000 trees adorn the landscape, which is very gently undulating without any climbing involved. A variety of tees allow the course to be played from 5,747 to 7,319 yards.

Signature Holes: Hole 4, Par 3, 214 yards (Blue tee) Signature hole 214 yard par 3 from the Championship tee. Green protected on left with large bunker complex, and a large lake to the right and behind. Prevailing wind tends to push tee shot towards lake on right. Hole 18, Par 4, 447 yards (Blue tee) A demanding tee shot with lake on left side of fairway. A slight draw here off the tee sets you up for an approach shot to a green, tucked up against the lake with heavy bunkering on the right. A very intimidating finishing hole!

From Shannon/Dublin: Follow signs to Limerick. Then take Route 21 to Tralee. *Avoid going through Tralee town by taking a right at first traffic lights, after second lights, go through next roundabout, go through next lights. At next lights turn right on Route 551 north towards Ardfert; go left on Route 558 towards Spa/Fenit; 1/4 mile beyond Oyster Tavern, Spa, at fork go right towards Churchill/Barrow. Follow signs to Tralee Golf Club. From Cork: Take N22 to Killarney, then N21 to Tralee. Follow directions* as above. Surrounded by the Atlantic, Tralee’s magnificent and challenging Arnold Palmer course offers incomparable views on all sides. Castles, distant islands, towering mountains and the beach that figured prominently in “Ryan’s Daughter” will captivate you. Built by Arnold Palmer, this stunning setting represents a true paradise for those willing to challenge what is widely acclaimed as one of the finest links courses in Ireland. It comes as no surprise to learn that, due to the majestic beauty of this setting, Palmer chose it to be his first and, arguably, his finest golf course in Europe.

In addition to boasting a clear view of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole, Tralee has a fully qualified resident professional, well stocked Pro shop, a comfortable restaurant & bar, and is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. A trip to Southwest Ireland could not be complete without playing this most precious and unpretentious of golfing jewels. Signature Hole: 3rd. The Castle. The show-piece of the course - a slender finger of green rising from the crashing waves - requires no more than an eight or nine iron, but the rocks and hungry sea at the right have claimed many a ball.

The Old Course, “Championship golf at it’s finest”. It is widely accepted that in 1938 when Captain H.C.C. Tippet laid out Tramore Golf Course something special was created. Visitors over years have spoken fondly of their favourite holes and when Henry Cotton played Harry Bradshaw here in 1937 he described the Par 4, 17th hole as “one of the finest golf holes he had played”. That’s why in 2006 when course designer Jeff Howes was awarded the contract to remodel the original 18 holes it was on the strict understanding that he could only enhance what was already there. Those who are familiar with

TRAMORE

the old course marvel at the result and all are in agreement that Jeff Howes excelled at his task. Although the Newtown 9 Hole Course is a relatively new addition at Tramore, early comments are very favorable and a round of golf on it is “Highly Recommended” Signature Holes At 344 meters the Par 4, 17th requires a good drive up the right hand side as access to the green is restricted by tall trees on the left. The elevated green is protected by a bunker at the front and trees at the rear calling for a high degree of accuracy with your second shot.

The Irish Golf Guide

Leinster Introduction

Leinster The province of Leinster takes in an area from the southern border of Northern Ireland through to the sunny south east corner of the island of Ireland, with over one and a half million people living in the vibrant, not to be missed city of Dublin and its surrounding areas alone. Leinster takes in the counties of Carlow, Dublin & Dublin City, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford & Wicklow. It has a long sea coast, stretching from Carlingford Bay in County Louth to Hook Head in County Wexford. Leinster is probably best viewed as a series of sub regions, each sub region encapsulating its own local geography, unique landscape and separate but co-joined history. From the ancient Hill of Tara and the world famous stone age site at Newgrange, at 5000 years old it is considered to be one the oldest man made structures in the world, to the vibrant and stylish city of Kilkenny and then to Wicklow, the famous

‘Garden of Ireland’, there are an amazing number of historical and fascinating places to visit for both the golfer and non-golfer alike. Dublin, it’s Capital is a county as well as a city and sprawls over a large part of this area. From the superb nightlife to the modern museums and art galleries, great little sea-side resorts along the coast, the lavish gardens of Howth Castle, or the unique and wonderful collection of Irish furniture and paintings at Malahide Castle - its all here in a city not to be missed. From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland. With plenty of great links courses such as Arklow, Seapoint and St Annes, to the large inland golf resorts of Druid’s Glen, Mount Juliet and Carton House, not forgetting the reknowned K Club near Dublin, where The Ryder Cup was won so emphatically by Europe in 2006, Leinster has plenty of variety to challenge golfers of all levels.

“From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland.”

The Irish Golf Guide

Connaught Introduction

Connaught The province of Connaught (Connacht) lies in the West of Ireland with its coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The counties of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon are within its boundary. Historically, Connaught has retained its rich Gaelic heritage and today still has communities where the Irish language is spoken. These regions are collectively called the Gaeltacht. Connaught has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland, including the spectacular mountainous landscape of Connemara. The primary business centre of Connaught, and most densely populated area, is the thriving city of Galway to the south of the province. Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland. The streets and buildings of this ancient town have many interesting features, and its position on

the edge of the Gaeltacht makes it the gateway to magnificent areas such as Connemara, Corrib country, and the Aran Islands. The city itself is a continuing centre of growth with its University, Institute of Technology, Theatres, Cathedral, Castle, Hotels, Docks, Industries as well as other interesting attractions. As for golf, the dramatic scenery and splendour of the Connaught region has created wonderful natural landscapes for golf course designers to hone their skills. Like all areas in the west of Ireland, the first obstacle to a good score is Mother Nature herself. The golfer will find that he or she will not alone have to contend with the cunning and guile of architect allied to the terrain, but must adjust for what is benignly known in local parlance as the “westerly breeze” coming straight across three thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean.

“Some of the most beautiful & unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland...”

The Irish Golf Guide

Munster Introduction

Munster Munster is the southern most province of Ireland and is home to 6 of the 32 counties – Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Wareford and Tipperary. All the counties in Munster touch the Atlantic except for Tipperary – tha largest county in Ireland. Cork is the second largest county in Ireland and is also the second largest city. Other cities in the province include Limerick and Waterford. The major towns are Tralee, Killarney, Ennis, Clonmel and Thurles. Cork has a population of over 160,000 people. Like Venice the city is built upon the waters, and Cork centre is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Cork Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee which embrace the city centre are spanned by many bridges, and this gives the city a distinctive continental air. However it is often said of Cork City that it has all the amenities of a large city, but still manages to retain its pleasant atmosphere and extreme friendliness, which you will experience on your visit. Cork is a city of

remarkable charm, and the visitor cannot fail to be captivated by its hilly streets, bumpy bridges and peaceful backwaters. Munster is a tremendously fertile area of Ireland with many major rivers including the Bandon, the Lee, the Blackwater, the Suir and the final stages of the Shannon and its spectacular Lough Derg which is a border point of Munster, Connacht and Leinster. Munster has a number of mountain ranges and includes the largest peak in Ireland - Carrauntoohil in Kerry’s majestic MacGillycuddy Reeks. Sport is almost regarded as a religion in Munster. The Gaelic Athletic Association - GAA - was formed in Thurles, Co.Tipperary and all Munster counties are passionate about their hurling and gaelic football. Munster rugby unites all the six counties and their followers and supporters are known the world over. There are golf courses to suit every golfer throughout Munster, from fine parkland courses

and resorts such as Killarney and Mahoneys’s Point in Kerry and Fota Island Golf and Country Club, Lee Valley and Monkstown in Cork. The province is also home to several spectacular and world reknowned links courses including Tralee, Waterville and Dooks in County Kerry, all situated on the wild Atlantic coast.

Ulster Introduction

Ulster From the natural wonders of the Giants Causeway and the Marble Arch caves, to the country houses and gardens of Castleward, Mount Stewart and Florencecourt, the glorious sandy beaches on the Antrim coast and the tranquil shores of Lough Erne and Strangford Lough, right across to the spectacular and rugged coastline of Donegal there is much to see and do in this varied and beautiful province of Ulster. There are the bustling and colourful cities of Belfast and Londonderry, with their many stylish bars, restaurants, hotels and many historical attractions. However, if you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, the Antrim Coast really is as impressive as its reputation suggests. It is one of the most beautiful shorelines in Ireland, winding past towering cliffs, sandy beaches, picturesque harbours and family resorts. Inland lies Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Great Britain and Ireland and the Fermanagh lakelands, sprinkled with tiny islands, wooded parks and monastic ruins.

On the west coast lies Donegal, with its breathtaking misty mountains, serene lakes and dramatic coastlines. Donegal boasts a vast rugged coastline softened regularly by a succession of beautiful beaches with golden sand and clear fresh waters. Inland, Donegal is wild and unspoilt with winding roads leading to never-ending spectacular vistas. Major attractions include Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Tory Island, Glebe House and Gallery, Colmcille Heritage Centre, Fort Dunree Military Museum and Abbey Mill Wheels. Letterkenny, County Donegal’s largest town, has a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great place to shop for everything from high street fashions to quality handcrafted goods and designer clothes - alternatively, you can relax and enjoy a coffee in one of Letterkenny’s many continental-style cafes. Seaside resorts like Bundoran provide a change of mood - if you’re looking for lively nights filled with music, song and dance, then Bundoran is the place to go.

The golf courses in Ulster contain an impressive mix of quality Parkland, Heathland and Links courses, and in Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, two world renowned golf courses along with Ballyliffin and Rosapenna in Donegal, all of which offer a spectacular links challenge to keep golfers from both sides of the Atlantic returning to these shores again and again.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.

COSTA DEL SOL NEWS

Ian Poulter Volvo World Match Play Champion After playing 108 holes against many of golf’s best players in hot sun over Finca Cortesín hilly layout, Ian Poulter emerged as the winner of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Ian Poulter denied Luke Donald the World Number One spot as he beat him in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain. Donald was trying for an unprecedented match play double after taking the WGC-Accenture title in Arizona in February, but his fellow Englishman triumphed 2 and 1 at Finca Cortesin. Poulter celebrated his son Luke’s seventh birthday in exactly the way he hoped - although not the moment when he fell down a bank trying to thrash his way out of a bush.

Helped by Donald three-putting the next, missing a three footer that would have taken the hole, Poulter went two up with an approach to two feet on the 464 yard 16th and a half on the next was good enough although he had to make a seven footer for it. It earned him €800,000, while Donald’s compensation was a cheque for €420,000.

Donald commented: “It was disappointing - I ran out of steam a bit and didn’t take the opportunities I had.”

Donald began the day with a chance to be number one. So did Kaymer, but in a repeat of the final in Tucson he came off a clear second best again in their semi-final. In fact, he did not even take him as far. Their first clash ended 3 and 2 and this time Donald cruised through 5 and 3, never trailing from the moment Kaymer bogeyed the second. By the time the German double-bogeyed the short tenth, finding sand and then going off the other side of the green, he was four down and he conceded after going in another bunker at the 15th.

In the first all-English final since the event began at Wentworth in 1964, Poulter, last year’s Tucson champion, was behind three times before levelling again with a 40 footer on the short 12th and then going ahead two holes later.

“He played like a machine a little bit,” stated Kaymer. “It was unbelievable - he hits the fairways, all the greens and he makes the putts. “It was like a PlayStation. I thought there’s maybe a little bit of a chance, but I just didn’t see it.

“Happy birthday Luke,” he said. “I thought it would be pretty special to win this today. “I finally started holing some putts. I’ve been frustrated for a few months and you have to hole putts to win.”

“He never really opens the door for you and it felt a little bit impossible. He really deserves to become the number one.” The other match was heading the way of Colsaerts until he reached the same hole, but three-putting there and driving into the bushes on the 16th allowed Poulter to draw level. The Brussels golfer, 108th in the world after winning his first European Tour title in China last month, holed from ten feet for a two on the next, but Poulter followed him in from nine. Then at the last, with Colsaerts on in two, Poulter pitched to five feet, halved in birdie fours and went through when his opponent fluffed a chip at the first extra hole and took a bogey six. In the final, after going ahead with a par on the second Donald bogeyed the fourth and fifth, but then came back with a 25 footer at the sixth. Back and forth it went after that, with Poulter’s tumble on the eighth even leaving him without his lucky ball-marker until it was retrieved by a referee. He levelled at the next and again with a 40 footer at the short 12th after bogeying the 226 yard tenth, then went ahead for the second time thanks to a pitch to three feet on the 14th. Donald missed from three feet for a threeputt bogey and only a half on the next.

COSTA DEL SOL

The secret is out! Or at least so it seems to some

With doom and gloom around every corner it’s refreshing to hear some positive news coming out of Los Arqueros Estates and their on site real estate business in Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club. On the Costa del Sol we meet lots of people involved in the property market but none as positive as Ian Cooper, Managing Director of Los Arqueros Estates. “We are finding great deals right now in Los Arqueros. UK vendors are cashing in their property and taking advantage of the weak pound and this is driving sales. At the same time, buyers who have been sitting on the fence are now pushing the button to buy.” So apparently confidence is back, we asked Ian who is buying? “As Los Arqueros was first developed by a Swedish company it has always been popular with Swedish clients and still is. Taylor Woodrow’s involvement over the past 14 years has meant the UK market has also been strong here and now we have seen a number of Dutch and Russian clients buying recently.”

And why? “Well that’s easy, excellent all round value. A community which is consolidated, safe, well established and 100% legal.” Anyone not familiar with Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club in Benahavis are in for a pleasant surprise. Firstly its location is amazing, offering stunning sea views towards the Mediterranean, with a backdrop of La Zagaleta and Sierra Bermeja and all just a few minutes away from the beach, Marbella and Puerto Banus. It not all about Seve Ballesteros’ 18-hole golf course either. As Ian points out, “a short drive away is the white village of Benahavis named the gastronomic corner of Andalucia with dozens of great restaurants. Added to this you can find a host of other sports activities and professional instruction all on site.” Ian has chosen to specialize in selling properties in Los Arqueros Golf and Country Club, with his properties ranging in price from €189.000

to just over €3.95 million. This allows a wide range of people the opportunity to experience a fabulous lifestyle and to enjoy all the facilities this development has to offer.
