New Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date ON LAND AND SEA The quintessential divers’ watch, the absolute reference in its genre, the Submariner has expanded its horizons far beyond the element of its birth in 1953, while denying nothing of its aquatic origins. At home in the depths of the oceans, a universe in which it remains the basic instrument of every diver, it long ago conquered terra firma, as the watch of action. Waterproof to 100, 200, then 300 metres as it successively evolved since its launch, the Submariner has always been the symbol of Rolex’s supremacy in waterproofness. New features Timeless and impervious to the elements, it is today available in a steel version sporting new features. Its 40 mm case in 904L steel, synonymous with robustness, waterproofness and corrosion resistance, boasts a new rotatable bezel fitted with a practically scratchproof black Cerachrominsert — or green for themodel with the green dial — with platinum graduations. Penumbra and soft light As much in its element in the penumbra of the ocean floor as in the soft light of sophistication, this new Submariner Date offers exceptional legibility thanks to hour markers and hands coated with luminescent Chromalight. Its mechanical movement equipped with a Perpetual rotor and a Parachrom hairspring pledges increased chronometric precision and reliability. Its unidirectional rotatable graduated bezel allows the safe reading of dive time. A power of seduction that never goes out of style This new model is no stranger to comfort. The Rolex Glidelock clasp allows for fine adjustments of the bracelet length. On land as at sea, watch and wearer are bound by the emotional charge deriving from the Submariner’s irresistible power of seduction.

San Roque hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner and was the base for both teams as they competed at nearby Valderrama. Designed by Dave Thomas, the sensational Old Course is currently rated as No. 58 in Europe by Golf World Magazine and was host to the 2005 Spanish Open. The Old Course is the pride of the club, the enjoyment of it is reserved for members only except for the daily public periods between 12pm and 2.30pm when the general public can enjoy it´s fairways and exceptional greens. In 2003 San Roque was ready for a new addition to the family, the New Course, designed by Perry Dye (son of Pete) complements the Old Course, while presenting a contrasting challenge. Dye incorporates the contours of the San Roque hills and existing ancient trees, giving
golfers wonderful views to the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean Sea beyond. Many features are unique to Dye courses and it´s one of the few examples currently existing in Europe. The New Course hosted the Spanish Open in 2006 and is increasingly being regarded as one of the “must be played” courses on the Coast. The San Roque Club has also hosted The European Tour Q-School Finals for over 10 years. The San Roque Golf & Country Club is almost unmatched for scenery and elegance. Golfers wanting to belong to an exclusive club, a family of over 500 privileged golfers benefitting from the experience the club has to offer need look no further. The natural beauty of the area, historic beautiful clubhouse, two championship 18 hole courses, Golf Academy, fantastic practice facilities, Equestrian Centre, tennis and padel
courts, pool and renowned Japanese Restaurant as well as the famous Bar & Restaurante Jerez – with its amazing sunsets, make the San Roque Club the obvious choice for membership. The club makes a great effort to ensure members are looked after and entertained with 3 weekly club competitions including 2 roll ups, and a packed calendar of events spanning the 12 months of the year. Regular interclubs are held throughout the year with other European elite clubs. As an added benefit for it´s members San Roque also has special reciprocal agreements with clubs all over the world. The club has a large pool of low handicap members which when mixed with the wide variety of higher handicap members ensures that whatever your level, there is always someone to enjoy the courses with as a member.

The San Roque Club
Old Course At the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, where the mountains meet the sea, is a legendary home for European golf Created in 1990. Designed by Dave Thomas with bunkers redesigned by Seve Ballesteros, The Old Course is rated amongst the finest in Europe. This amazing course is the pride of the club, the enjoyment of it is reserved for members only except for the daily public periods when the general public can make use of this fantastic course.
Hole 1, Par 4, Hcp 5, 357m A tough starting hole; a straight drive is required to a narrow fairway; with out of bounds on either side of the fairway and a bunker to collect all drives that are pulled left. If you do manage to find the short stuff, a mid to long iron is required to a green that slopes from back to front. There is also the issue of a large bunker that runs down the right side of the hole for 60 meters to protect the green. If you walk off here with a par or better you are in good shape. Hole 2, Par 4, Hcp 7, 390m A long par 4, but played from an elevated tee so does not play anywhere near it’s full distance. The drive is the key here, to have any chance of hitting the green in regulation you must be as far left on the fairway as possible. The ideal line is a small fade worked in from the left bunker or even playing short of the bunker gives a mid iron into a receptive green. If the drive is anywhere right of centre, you are sure to be blocked out by the trees, and left with a chip out or a risky second. Hole 3, Par 3, Hcp 15, 143m Don’t be fooled by this short par 3. Although only stroke index 15 this lovely looking hole is fraught with danger from 3 sides. Left, right or long are not an option as severe woodland awaits any errant tee shot. The fact the green is only postage stamp size adds to the difficulty of this short hole. Don’t be upset with a par, as many scorecards can be damaged here.
Hole 4, Par 4, Hcp 13, 330m A short par 4 that requires accuracy from the tee. If you can avoid the thick woodland on the left and the huge deep bunker that runs down the right side you have a great chance to find the green and a birdie putt will ensue. Hole 5, Par 5, Hcp 9, 440m A great looking par 5 from a raised tee, with spectacular views of the surrounding hills and lavish villas. Well positioned bunkers on either side of the fairway are there to catch any wayward drives. The large green is raised up from the fairway so makes reaching in two only an option for the longest of hitters. Find the green in regulation and you should at least make par. Hole 6, Par 4, Hcp 1, 401m Stroke index 1 hole and it is easy to see why. A tight drive, ideally left of the fairway is needed here. The bigger hitters will not want to use driver as the lake in the fairway is definitely in play. Anything right will be blocked out by the trees. A tough second shot to a raised green plays much longer than expected. The bunker protecting the front left of the green is to be avoided also, as an up and down from there is tough. The green also slopes from back to front, so if the pin is at the front and you are at the back, the fun has just begun! Great hole but must be treated with utmost respect. Hole 7, Par 3, Hcp 11, 176m This hole looks fairly straight forward from the tee. A solitary bunker protects the left
side of the green, but there appears no other real danger. However, at 176 metres off the yellows and played uphill, picking the correct club is the difficulty here. If played into a headwind, just reaching the green is tough, as myself and my playing partners all found to our cost. My advice is to take at least 2 clubs more, otherwise you will be left with a tricky up and down to save par. Hole 8, Par 4, Hcp 3, 362m Handicap 3 hole, but appeared to play much easier than that. The wide fairway should be found with no real problem. The danger is the 2nd shot, especially if the large bunker on the left of the green is found, from there a par will be a great score. Find the green in regulation however, and a par should be routine on this hole. Hole 9, Par 5, Hcp 17, 436m The tee shot appears much tighter than it actually is, as the fairway opens up considerably when you climb over the first raised area from the teebox. The target line from the yellow tee’s is the clubhouse turret. This will keep you from finding the large bunker on the right side. From the fairway, an easy lay up will be with a short to mid iron. If you managed to hit a good drive then a long iron or fairway wood can easily reach this short par 5 in two, but with 7 bunkers to protect the green it will need to be very accurate to make the putting surface. Hole 10, Par 5, Hcp 8, 463m A long dogleg left par 5. Aim your drive

between the two large bunkers in the distance. Bigger hitters may be able to cut the corner, but will require a big high carry to miss the tall trees. If this is achieved then reaching the green in two is possible, otherwise a straight forward lay up to your preferred wedge distance is the correct play. A large bunker protects the green which undulates severely so every putt must be given upmost respect. Hole 11, Par 4, Hcp 2, 384m One of the signature holes of the course. A long drive with a touch of draw is the ideal tee shot. The bunker on the right must be avoided to reach the green in two. If you manage to find the fairway a long second is required over a pretty stream that runs from the left side and in front of the green. The stream then runs into a small lake on the right side of the green. Aim to the left side of the green and hopefully you can leave this great hole with at least a par. Hole 12, Par 4, Hcp 4, 347m Another fantastic looking hole. The drive seems tight as trees encroach from both sides, but the fairway opens up considerably once you get past them. However, with out of bounds over the boundary wall to the right and a small lake just to the left there are still dangers from the tee box. A good drive should leave a mid iron to a green that is well guarded by another small lake. Be sure to take enough club as anything short will be wet, and guarantee at least a bogey. A classic hole.
Hole 13, Par 4, Hcp 10, 397m Long par 4 played from a high elevated position to a sharp dogleg left fairway. If you can cut the corner slightly you will be left with a mid iron to a very narrow green. The long thin bunker will catch anything that is pushed right on the approach to the hole. The two tiered green is one of the fastest on the course, particularly if you have found the wrong tier and are left with a downhill putt from the back of the green. This hole plays much tougher than stroke index 10! Hole 14, Par 3, Hcp 18, 153m A relatively short par 3, but still requires a solid tee shot to avoid the large deep bunker on the right side of the green. If this is avoided then the green is where the fun really starts. Sloping from back to front with a steep step in the middle of the green, it is important to find the correct level. If the flag is on the front lower section of the green and your ball is at the back, this putt is almost impossible to get close. Hole 15, Par 4, Hcp 12, 314m A short par 4, but as it is played uphill all the way to the green it is much longer that the yardage suggests. A draw in from the bunker on the right is the ideal play from the tee. This will leave a routine shot into the green. Another green which slopes dramatically from back to front, and is lethal if you find the wrong tier and are having to putt downhill. Hole 16, Par 3, Hcp 16, 174m Although under 200 yards from the yellow
The San Roque Club Old Course
tees, being uphill it plays much longer. If the wind is against then it is even tougher to select the right club and find the putting surface. The green itself is long and narrow with raised ground on three sides to make it appear enclosed. Considering this hole is stroke index 16, you will surely be delighted if you leave here with a par. Hole 17, Par 5, Hcp 14, 487m Fairly long par 5, but is played to a wide open fairway. There are still a group of bunkers to the left that are to be avoided, and O.B. and trees to the right. From here only the very long hitters will even consider taking the green on as it is protected by a lake to the front and right. A mid to long iron to get within wedge distance is the safer play, and then a pitch onto the large green and 2 putt should secure your par. Hole 18, Par 4, Hcp 6, 380m Signature hole. A long dogleg left par 4 to finish, with numerous dangers to avoid. Aim left of the large bunker on the right side of the fairway for the ideal line in. But anything pulled too far left will find the lake and the possibility of racking up a big number. If the water is avoided however, a long second over a stream that passes through the fairway is required. There is still further water to avoid in another small lake to the right side of the green before you can finally breathe easy. A true classic finishing hole that you will want to play time and again. (All distances from yellow tees.)

The San Roque Club
New Course
2002 saw work begin on the construction of The New Course - a second championship golf course at the Club. The new world class course - 6626 metres from the championship tees - aims to complement The Old Course, while presenting a very different challenge. The designs, by the renowned American course designer Perry Dye, incorporate the contours of the San Roque hills, giving golfers wonderful views to the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.
Hole 1: Par 4, Hcp 13, 365m A tricky opening hole that requires a straight drive, preferably down the left side of the fairway to give a clear shot to the green with your second. Any drive that veers right will have trees obstructing the shot to the green. The second shot is to a green below you and is tough to judge the correct distance. An undulating green adds to the difficulty of the hole, so a par here is very well received. Hole 2: Par 5, Hcp 15, 473m A great par 5, the wide fairway doglegs slightly to the right, but is dotted with numerous bunkers to catch you out on the drive and the approach shot. If all the bunkers can be missed, hitting the green in regulation should be easily achieved. From here par or better should be the aim on this hole. Hole 3: Par 4, Hcp 9, 316m A short par 4 that looks very tight from the tee. A long iron or fairway wood should put you in good position for a short to mid iron to the raised green. But with deep bunkers surrounding the green it is imperative that the centre of the large green is found or a difficult up and down will await.
Hole 4: Par 3, Hcp 7, 164m This par 3 is played over a ravine with heavy woodland, so if the green isn’t reached then you have to hope the large bunker in front has caught the ball, otherwise you will need to play your 3rd from the tee as it is almost certain to be lost. If you can find the green and miss all of the 7 bunkers that surround it you may still have a long putt as this green measures over 40 metres from front to back. Hole 5: Par 4, Hcp 17, 334m A pretty par 4, with views over the deep ravine running all the way down the left side of the hole. The drive can be played safely down the right side as the slope brings the ball back to the middle of the fairway. The approach shot is more dangerous, with a long bunker protecting the left side of the green and the ravine running beyond the bunker and also behind the green, no prizes for hitting it long on this approach. Hole 6: Par 4, Hcp 5, 316m A shortish par 4 that has no fewer than ten bunkers in play, to try and catch you out. One of those being the long narrow bunker on the right side of the fairway that seems a magnet for anything pushed slightly right.
This is course designer Perry Dye at his best, although the length would suggest an easy hole, a par here is a goog score. Hole 7: Par 5, Hcp 1, 513m One of the signature holes without a doubt, with great views of the sea from the tee box. The drive is fairly tight, but with the fairway running into a type of valley from either side the ball should roll into safety unless badly offline. The second shot will almost certainly have to be a lay up as the hole measures over 550 yards and has danger all around the green. For the lay up you should aim to the right side of the fairway and hopefully over the path which will leave no more than 130 metres to the green. The green is well guarded by bunkers and also has the large lake down the left side, so even the shortest of approach shots needs to be given full respect. Hole 8: Par 3, Hcp 11, 188m A long par 3, with a huge bunker running down the entire left side of the hole. Be sure to take enough club and keep to the right side as getting up and down from the bunker will be a major challenge. An aesthetically pleasing hole, but one that can easily ruin a scorecard.

Featured Course Review written by Kenny Plumb for The Costa del Sol Golf Guide S.L.
Hole 9: Par 4, Hcp 3, 372m An extremely tough par 4 that requires a long straight drive to put you in a good enough position to go for the green in regulation. A good drive should leave a long iron or rescue club to a tight green that has a lake just in front and to the left of the hole. Most high handicappers are advised to treat this hole as a par 5. If you can scramble a par here it is a great score. Hole 10: Par 4, Hcp 16, 318m A nice gentle start to the back nine. From this elevated tee, a mid to long iron should put you in good position short of the massive bunker that has been positioned to grab anyone attempting to go for the green in one. However, push anything to the right and there is out of bounds and also a bunch of trees to prevent hitting the green in regulation. Avoid going right off the tee and this hole should not cause too many problems. Hole 11: Par 5, Hcp 2, 515m A par 5 that isn’t fraught with danger but needs to be respected due to it’s sheer length. It is also narrow in places so getting caught up in the trees on either side of the fairways is easily done. If you can keep the ball fairly straight and hit it long enough this hole is one that can prove good for stableford scoring, especially as it is stroke index 2! Hole 12: Par 4, Hcp 18, 279m A great risk and reward hole. For the big hitters the green is certainly in range from
the elevated tee, but fade the ball too much and the massive fairway bunker that runs all of 70 metres down the right side up to the green will mean a very tricky second shot to reach the green. Better players will be looking for birdie on this hole. Hole 13: Par 3, Hcp 14, 160m A par 3 that has the Perry Dye trademark fairway bunker, running all the way down the right side of the hole from tee to green. If you can avoid this bunker and also the 2 small bunkers protecting the front left of the green a routine par should ensue. Hole 14: Par 4, Hcp 4, 403m A hole that is sure to grab your attention. A long drive will leave a mid iron to a green that has a lake protecting the right side. If the tee shot is not long enough, it may be advisable to lay up with your second because the lake is very easy to find! A great looking hole. Hole 15: Par 4, Hcp 8, 377m A tough uphill par 4 that I found much more difficult than it’s stroke index of 8! A long straight drive is required to be far enough up the fairway to be able to see the green. Anything left or right of the fairway and you are sure to be blocked out. From here the sensible ones amongst us will chip back into play and take their medicine. However, if a long straight drive is achieved then there is still work to do as the second shot will still play long, and the undulating green will also require your full attention before you can breath easily and move onto the next tee.
The San Roque Club New Course
Hole 16: Par 5, Hcp 10, 433m A par 5 that is reachable in two for the big hitters, but still poses enough question marks to hold your full attention. If the drive is good and long then going for it in two is certainly an option, otherwise laying up to the ideal wedge distance is a good idea. The small bunker to the left of the green must be avoided as it is extremely tough to get up and down from. The green has numerous dips and ledges so getting on the right level is important. A decent birdie chance on this hole. Hole 17: Par 3, Hcp 12, 166m Depending on the wind direction, this par 3 can be anything from a nine iron to a driver!! From an elevated tee the green looks inviting, but can catch you out with bunkers on the right side and a tree that leans perilously over the left side of the green. If the wind is strong and against then good luck making par! Hole 18: Par 4, Hcp 6, 387m A classic finishing hole. Taking on the green in regulation is only an option if the drive is on the short stuff and long, otherwise the lake to the right of the green is definitely in play! There is however a large bail out area to the left of the green, but then this brings the water back into play for the 3rd shot as the green is undulating and fast, and overshooting into the water is easily done. A fantastic matchplay hole that can bring tears of joy or happiness in equal measure! (All distances from yellow tees.)

New Course & Academy Opens at the Flamingos Resort
American Golf Academy The only academy in Europe that has it’s own 18 hole golf course attached. This enables the Professionals to include the golf course into the students learning from day one. This will encompass several key elements which can be missed when learning the game from a driving range. Elements such as etiquette, rules of the game, terminology, and overall course play which will make the beginner feel more like golfers from day one. With simple to follow instruction, the team of Professionals are trained in the AGA philosophy based on some of the greatest American teachers from past and present. Without over analysing or using technical jargon, the professionals will teach each student using the players own natural ability without confusion or too drastic changes.
Hendrik “Harro” Rijnders – Academy Director
Tramores Golf Course – 18 holes, Par 63, 3,468 metres
“Harro” Started his professional career in his home town of Brunssum in the South of the Netherlands, soon his talent for the game made him progress to become the youngest head professional in Holland at the age of 21.
The newest golf course on the coast is now open to the public, measuring almost 3,500 metres from the white tee’s. The 18 holes consist of 10 par 3’s, 7 par 4’s and 1 par 5. This technical course will test every players short game, but also gives the opportunity to get out the driver on several holes.
In 1992, Harro decided to travel to the south of Spain, already then the centre for golf in Europe. Soon he found work as a professional in La Quinta Golf & Country Club where D. Ricardo Arranz, started the first golf academy in the Costa del Sol. Later Harro got involved in the opening of the golf academy of Atalaya and became an intern consultant for the La Dunas Beach Hotel & Spa. In 2001 he took up the challenge to direct the Monte Mayor Golf Club & Country Club, a very picturesque 18 hole golf course settled in a unique mountain valley in Benahavís a position he left to join the American Golf Academy in 2010. In his 25 years in the golf industry, Harro has never left his passion to gather up to date information about the latest teaching techniques and trends by attending numerous Teaching and coaching conferences or visiting some of the leading golf Academies in the US. His teaching and programs are influenced by many leading American Top Instructors from the past and present. Harro will teach you in Dutch, English, German or Spanish.
Set in beautiful surroundings between 2 valleys and with stunning views over the Mediterranean, the course feels protected from the elements and a million miles away from the hussle and bustle of the coastal resorts. The course is a great way to unwind or hone your short game skills without needing to be on the course for a four and a half hour round. For those players looking to gain more confidence or those only just starting the game, Tramores golf is perfect. The better player will also love the feel of the course and the accuracy needed to play it. With greens that are true and in fantastic condition this is a short course that is sure to have you returning time and again.
The Academy will run programmes for juniors, novices, and seniors. There will also be 1 – 5 day intensive coaching for groups or individuals. The attached course will provide the perfect escape for the golfer who is pushed for time and requires a quick 9 or 18 holes, whilst also being ideal for the golfer wanting to sharpen up on his or hers scoring shots. Facilities at the AGA The forthcoming Academy will contain state of the art technical areas, with a full driving range, a swing room, a gym containing specialist golf related apparatus and training techniques. A SAM putting lab, video analysis, 8 bay netted indoor range, 2 practice pitching areas with bunkers, 2 putting greens and a fully stocked Pro shop. Not to mention it’s very own unique 18 hole course. Harro and his team of International Professionals look forward to seeing you soon. Monte Mayor Under New Management
Monte Mayor Golf & Country Club’s Golf related business is now being run by ExpeCtations Golf Management. This includes the 18 hole course, restaurant, pro shop, driving range, tennis and paddle courts. One of the ExpeCtations shareholders, Alain Nucera is no stranger to Monte Mayor, as he worked there from July 2007 until September 2008 with Blue Green Spain, and it is clear it holds a special place in his heart. ExpeCtations Golf Management has agreed a 5 year contract to manage the Business, and the vision is to take this unique resort to the next level. 2010 is due to be an important transitional year at Monte Mayor with many improvements being made to what is already a Costa del Sol institution.
Restaurant The restaurant at Monte Mayor has been the first element of the Club to be reorganised. This has included a brand new menu, a new drinks menu with reduced prices including Guinness on draught! A new look Andalusian style terrace. The restaurant inside has been freshened up and the now working fireplace is sure to be a hit, along with the new Monte Mayor Club sandwich and full English breakfast that are proving extremely popular. Caddiemaster The buggy station at Monte Mayor has now been moved to the front of house so is accessible as soon as you enter the complex. Along with this the Caddiemaster can also provide a free club cleaning service at the end of your round on request, adding to the great service on offer. Pro Shop The fully stocked Pro Shop is shortly due to obtain new big name brand goods, including Adidas amongst others. The Pro Shop is also bringing back its famous Monte Mayor quote T-shirt “It takes balls to play Monte Mayor”, which should be on sale this summer! Course The course itself will not be changed significantly as the Management Team wish to keep the feel and soul of the existing well known course. But small visual changes such
as new signage on the holes, and new floral areas around the tee’s will add to the visual pleasure of Monte Mayor without changing what makes the course so well received. The Spanish Federation have also updated all the distances for the course, which will mean all new scorecards and strokesavers to be used soon. Along with all of these changes a brand new website for just the golf related business, will showcase the facilities and provide all the information that any golfer who is visiting Monte Mayor could want. The new website should be ready not later than July. Please log onto www.montemayorgolf.com or call 952 937 111 for more information. As we can see, the Hidden Treasure of the Costa del Sol is now entering in a brand new era. Alain Nucera, the General Golf Manager relates: “Monte Mayor is now in a transitional period. Mother Nature didn’t help lately, but we get used to challenges. All the team is over motivated and we all look forward to see the evolution of this authentic and unique place.”

Travellers Guide Turismo Costa del Sol / www.visitacostadelsol.com
Nobody from any country in the western world will find any fundamental differences between southern Spanish society and the one they left behind. The real difference will probably be the climate, since few western countries outside the Mediterranean basin enjoy such a luxury. The people are, of course, different, and they speak a different language and have different customs, but it is the marked friendliness of the Andalusians, their gastronomy and their traditions – all different from ours - that prompt most people to come here in the first place. The climate on the Iberian Peninsula is generally stable, and as far as meteorological science permits, weather forecasts are reliable. The seasons are fairly predictable, with periods of rain in the Costa del Sol from the end of September to the end of November, and in March and April. Rain and sunshine can alternate on any given day during these periods, and it is rare to have rain falling for more than two or three days at a time.
The beaches on the Costa del Sol are largely sandy, but there are also many pebble beaches where foot-ware is advised. Tourists coming to the Costa del Sol in winter are advised to take umbrellas and raincoats, although such items can be purchased cheaply in local shops. Opening hours for shops tend to change from winter to summer. In general, summer shopping times are from 10 in the morning to 1.30 or 2 in the afternoon, and from 5.30 to 9 at night. In important tourist areas, many shops open later than nine in the morning, and remain open during siesta time and until quite late at night. Spanish law permits supermarkets to open on Sundays in large tourist areas during the summer period. Bars, restaurants and cafeterias have more flexible opening hours, generally in accordance with the requirements of their clients.
Public institutions and banks open only in the mornings, although more essential services may be available in the afternoons as well. The banks close on Saturdays only in summer, while savings banks (cajas de ahorros, to all practical purposes, similar to banks) always close on Saturdays. Health care is comprehensive on the Costa del Sol, with a complete network of hospitals and health centres all over the province of Malaga. Tourists from the European Union should carry the new European health card, which substitutes the old E-111 form. In any case, emergency treatment is immediate, with or without a card, which is necessary only for subsequent paperwork. Public safety in the province of Malaga, as in all of Spain, is in the hands of the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Autonomous Police and the Local or Municipal Police. These police forces work together, and people with problems that require immediate police attention can call on any of them. The easiest way of calling the police is by phoning 091, the National Police number, or calling to any police station in person. English is the second language on the Costa del Sol, and it is spoken to some extent by most people in positions of authority in the province of Malaga, especially in the coastal areas. English is less widely spoken in the interior of the province, except in large towns or tourist areas. Tourism offices usually have personnel capable of communicating in English, French and German. Electrical current in Spain is 220 volts, and the electrical plug used is two-point. Adaptors must thus be used for any electrical appliance that does not use the two-point plug, and transformers must be used with appliances that use a different voltage. It is advisable to take these with you.
All Town Halls have a lost-objects department, although found objects are frequently handed in at the nearest police station. If handbags or wallets have been left in bars or restaurants, it is worth going back to check with the management: they generally keep them for a week or so before handing them over to the police. Given the cosmopolitan character of the Costa del Sol, there are places of worship for most major religions, with Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other minority religious centres on the coast. Alcaidesa Links LINKS COURSE
The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually any location on the course.

Alcaidesa Links HEATHLAND COURSE
Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. Thanks to Dave Thomas, the famous golf course designer, this golf course is now the best setting for any type of golf championship. The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards.

The San Roque Club NEW COURSE
Designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros the New Course opened in 2003, since then it has blossomed into a mature and well respected course which can hold court with the best of them in the area. Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years – the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. The design depicts a links course in many holes and it also has many unique Dye features which is rare for a European course. It is a challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers, but with five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course, it is also possible for higher handicap players to enjoy. Nevertheless, the course is designed to reward canny tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard four of the greens, also defended by more than 100 bunkers.

27 holes
Almenara is a truly glorious and unspoilt 27-hole complex divided between Los Lagos (The Lakes), Los Pinos (The Pines) and Los Alcornoques (The Oaks) - each very special for their individuality. The greens are usually very quick, which can require some creative thinking and feel to navigate.
Oaks & Lakes: 18 holes, Par 72 6083m • 5910m • 5013m
Los Lagos is a stunning part of the course and a true test of golf. As you would expect from the name, water comes in to play on four of the holes. Los Pinos begins with a Par 5 leading straight downhill before winding its way through a series of superb holes more representative of a parkland course. This provides a good contrast to Los Lagos, yet retains the need for excellent course management. Los Alcornoques is perhaps the most exposed to the elements of the three sides, and mixes up a selection of holes to test your nerve and accuracy.

Signature Holes Each of the nine holes has it’s own unique character and standout holes - whichever you play, you won’t be disappointed. The tricky par 3, 7th on Los Lagos is a challenge rewarded by its setting - a long iron or wood over a lake to the green which is protected by a bunker at the front. On Los Alcornoques, club selection is vital at both Par 3’s - depending on the wind the whole character of this course can change.

A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other memberonly facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience. The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop.

Valderrama GOLF CLUB
Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year.

Signature Hole Hole 4. La Cascada. Par 5. 516m. Robert Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Signature Holes The seventh is widely considered the best on the course. It doglegs to the left with out of bounds on the same side. The drive should be played slightly right of centre. A precise second shot is required to a narrow, well-guarded green. Any shot bouncing on the left edge of the green will kick towards the centre, so favour this side and stay dry!

RCG Sotogrande REAL CLUB DE GOLF
Founded in 1964, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is located on prime golfing land close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. Anyone lucky enough to have played at one of Spain’s foremost members’ clubs will be able to confirm Robert Trent Jones was right to take pride in what is an extraordinarily good design. RCG Sotogrande is often voted to be among the top ten golf courses in Europe – and rightly so. “Sotogrande Old”, as it is called by the locals, boasts mature vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings. The greens are large with typical Trent Jones contours - and the tees are very long, some would say excessively so, but they allow for variations in pin placement and the length of hole.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

La Duquesa Golf & Country Club
Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar. On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa.

Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The prettiest hole of the course, and one of the prettiest of the Costa del Sol, is the 8th, as acknowledged by the majority of the Club’s members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace.

Signature Holes Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water. We suggest hitting the green!

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After the game wander into T’s Bar. Signature Hole Hole 10. Par 4. A beautiful downhill short par 4 with the green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe with just a mid iron to the middle of a large fairway area, however you may feel that at only 250 meters downhill and the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. A straight one will make an eagle/ birdie very possible - but just slightly out and you are looking at a 6.

Golf & Country Club
Situated in the beautiful Resina estate lies the sublime short course of La Resina. The 9 hole layout is made up of 2 par fours and 7 par 3’s. However don’t be fooled into thinking that you will have a round full of birdies and pars, as this course is challenging with a varied terrain of hills, lakes and extreme rough to overcome. Common to all the holes is the quality of the greens. As the greenkeepers come from Valderrama they are in sublime condition, and run perfectly true. We would highly recommend this course for all who want a nice quick 9 or 18 holes, or to all who want to improve their short game. Also a great course for beginners or high handicappers looking to improve their game before moving onto the larger courses. In all great fun and extremely good value for the Costa del Sol.
If you hit the green you still have a lot of work to do as the green is on 2 levels and runs fairly steeply up from front to back. Two putting from anywhere outside 15 feet is good.

Flamingos GOLF RESORT
Flamingos: 18 holes, Par 71 5714m • 5456m • 4828m
There are few better indications of quality than the honour of hosting a major event in your inaugural year and this was what happened at Flamingos. The Dr Antonio Garcia Garrido designed layout welcomed the European Senior PGA 2002 Championship final, and again in 2003 and 2004. With spectacular views of the sea and mountains, Africa and Gibraltar, a large natural lake around which the whole resort has been built and luxuriant vegetation, this course is one you’ll also want to keep coming back to.
Alferini Golf Course Without a doubt a star project since it was inaugurated in 2007. It has been a real challenge for its designer, D. Cristóbal Guerrero. Set out between the mountains and with magnificent views of the sea and the Resort, this par-73 layout extends to almost 7,000 metres along fairways lined by pines, orange trees, cypresses and holm oaks. It is a glorious place to play golf. Blessed by superb drainage, it’s also perfect all year-round.
Alferini: 18 holes, Par 73 6700m • 6379m • 5667m Handicap: Men 27, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Putting green, Clubhouse, Bar/Restaurant, Buggies, Trolleys, Driving range
Each of the 18 holes represents the garden of a Tuscan Villa, where you will find Roman columns, classical statues and marble bridges on the fairways and corners of the course. Each hole is also defined by its own tree: cypress, orange, nisper, jacaranda, pine, olive, chestnut, pomegranate and many more.

For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary! Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

Signature Hole Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

OLD COURSE
Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Championships winner who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With its wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well.

New Training Facilities Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

NEW COURSE
Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Holes There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a midiron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.
Facilities: Buggies, Trolleys, Electric trolleys, Driving Range, Practice areas, Golf lessons, Kiosk, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar
Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

The South Course is the oldest course of the Gualdalmina complex. It was designed by Javier Arana in 1959 and is renowned for its difficulty, making it more suitable for experienced players. Fairways are narrow and well protected by old trees. The North Course, designed by Folco Nardi in 1973, is shorter and hillier with more water obstacles. The course requires straight drives as failure to do so may find one of the numerous water hazards hidden in the rough.

Featuring one of the most picturesque green settings on the Costa del Sol, this downhill dogleg right hole follows the sweeping contours of the fairway, turning to reveal a peninsula green nestled by the lakeside. An accurate drive is required if the player is to successfully reach the green in two. Built and maintained to the highest standards, this full length par 36, 9 hole layout is an absolute joy to play. Always perfectly manicured and with incredible putting surfaces, designer Roderick Segar has shown a great understanding and sympathy of the gently undulating terrain on which the course sits. Water forms an integral part of the course - with manmade lakes that are defined by their stylish black slate surrounds contrasting with the breathtakingly beautiful natural lake which comes into play on the 4th and 5th holes. Quick, true greens are up there with the best, and give the opportunity for the greenkeepers to put in some devilish pin positions due to the combination of slopes and hazards. But this course is perfect for golfers of any level, either for a quick 9 holes, or trying to better your score with another trip round.

Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club
Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience.

La Quinta Golf Club has 27 holes, divided in 3 courses of 9 holes, which can be combined to have more playing options. Each are integrated in the natural surroundings of the area, from which one can view the Mediterranean sea and the mountains that encircle Marbella.
Course A + B: 18 holes, Par 70 5602m • 5370m • 4748m
Course A, San Pedro, has open fairways and short yardage, therefore, woods and long irons are mainly used in this course. Course B, Ronda, a fabulous course with narrow fairways and more difficult greens. Surrounded by amazing houses and villas from the Spanish high society, this uphill course leads to the Ronda mountains. Finally, Course C, Guadaiza, although easier than course B, there are many slopes and a few dog legs. There is also La Quinta Golf Academy - equipped with the most modern facilities, such as the digital swing analysis system.
Course B + C: 18 holes, Par 71 5749m • 5507m • 4881m

Quality & Service For the last 3 years the club has been working on the landscaping and course quality together with quality of the services. A good example is the interval between each tee-time, which has been amplified for the comfort and benefit of the players - and the club has also incorporated a Bag Drop service in order to simplify the check-in process from the moment the player arrives to club parking until they are on the first tee.

Signature Holes The 4th is possibly one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, with a green guarded by a small river and big bunkers to the left, right and behind. The 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. From a solid tee shot you still have a long iron to the green - bogey here is a good result! The famous finishing hole is a long par 5, with the clubhouse behind the green. Before reaching the green there are several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed.

Magna Marbella Golf Club
Magna Marbella is a nine hole, par 29 course including excellent practice facilities and driving range with golf school. Situated on the top of Golf Valley, although Magna is ultimately catering for a market where time is valuble, they have not economised on the quality and services they offer. The clubhouse is elegantly furnished with a cosy atmosphere, and houses the excellent Magna Cafe featuring a terrace that overlooks the golf course, which is usually in immaculate condition. The greens are Magna Marbella’s pride and joy - irrigated with water which is distilled via their own plant. This will ensure that they are well protected from disease and should be in perfect condition whenever you visit. If you only have time to get a quick round in, enjoying Magna’s nine green jewels could prove an ideal way to spend it.
Magna Café has already become an institution with descerning visitors to the Costa del Sol and residents alike. Stylish surroundings, quality creative food & wine, breathtaking views and a ideal location make it a great place to be.

This elegant and picturesque par 4 is just one of the highlights at the long established Aloha Golf Club, designed by the late Javier Arana. Many will choose to play an iron from the tee for position and take their chances for a birdie on the subtle contours of the green. From the elevated tee, water impedes the narrow landing area of the fairway on the right, with a bunker protecting the green at the front.

Aloha GOLF CLUB
Most visiting golfers have heard of Aloha, it’s one of the best known courses on the Costa del Sol. Like many of the other older ones it has seen substantial improvements in recent years, particularly the replanting of the fairways and a general upgrading of the clubhouse and changing rooms. Overall there’s a wide mix of holes, characterised by mostly wide fairways - although you’ll have big problems if you stray either side of them. All the holes have highly individual, apt names. The second, for instance, is called ‘Uresandi’, the Baroque word for a lot of water - and three lakes certainly is a lot of water. The eleventh is Las Aguilas (Eagles) as the hole is so close to the mountain that twitchers may catch sight of one. Although the club is private, visitors are welcome all year. It’s advisable to telephone in advance - this course is very popular.

Lady of the Night or Dame de Noche was designed by Enrique Canales and opened in 1991. Specifically designed to be played at night as well as during the day - this course is open round the clock - the plantings perfume also helps keep mosquitoes at bay. Even though it is only nine holes, it is a Par 36. The joy of a nocturnal game of golf is alleviated with the absence of rough, ensuring that play moves at a steady pace, and the lighting has been carefully and strategically placed so that no shadows are cast.
This unusual and enchanting golf course is located just a few minutes away from Marbella town centre. A fairly new nine-hole par 3 course nestling in the foothills of La Concha, with spectacular Mediterranean views.

Driving away from the Mediterranean sea the prevailing wind comes from your left. Going down the right side of the fairway leaves a shorter second, but a grassy knoll slightly impedes the view to the green. The putting surface is nestled amongst the trees on the other side of the river, which is a genuine hazard. A lay up area is provided for those who require three (or more!) shots to get there.

Rio Real GOLF
This course has been in existence for over fifty years and was named after the Real river, which comes into play on several of the fairways. It’s a scenic course even though it is, on the whole, flat. Inaugurated in 1965, designed by Javier Arana, this magnificent 18-hole par 72 golf course is set in a beautiful sloping valley with challenging greens. On the par 4 tenth don’t worry if you don’t reach the dogleg on the fairway with the first shot - nobody is perfect! Choose your second shot to the green - if you play short it will be much easier. If you decide to go for it - over the pines and hill - hold your breath until fellowplayers audibly confirm your success. The par 5 thirteenth is the longest and most spectacular hole. Imitate Tiger Woods by reaching the green in three strokes if you can.

Signature Hole The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards and hillsides to contend with should you be wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182 metres from the men’s, and a massive 208 from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Greenlife Golf is one of the hidden treasures amongst the courses on the Costa del Sol. A sublime nine-hole par three course set in the beautiful surroundings of Elvira Hills, it boasts beautifully manicured fairways and greens lined with olive and cork trees. The variable terrain makes a complicated test for golfers of all levels. You will find longer courses on the coast but none that provide such a challenge to your short game.
Facilities: Trolleys, Driving Range, Pro shop, Clubhouse, Putting green, Golf Academy, Clay tennis courts, Fitness Centre, Sauna, Accommodation, Restaurante El Lago
The 9th is the longest hole, at 165 metres, and to hit the green only the best shot will suffice. Play it from the back tee - anything else will spoil it. Out of bounds runs along the left hand side of the fairway towards a two tier green with bunkers right and left. If you miss the green, expect a difficult approach requiring a lot of skill. You won’t find many par 3’s as hard as this, so play it as a par 4. You’ve been warned!
The hole has a touch of the 17th at Sawgrass to it. We can only advise you select the correct club, aim straight and swing true in order to make the putting surface. Good luck!

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north. The splendid 19th century clubhouseepitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking. The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

Signature Hole The 11th is a spectacular lefthanded dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The feature here is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall to its right. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green, next to the 12th tee.

Signature Holes Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 200m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.

This short 9 hole par 3 golf course is designed by Enrique Canales and opened in 1990. Great views and an undulated course with mature vegetation make La Siesta a pleasant visit. Although a private club, visiting golfers are always welcome. It is certainly a course to sharpen up your short game. The distances vary considerably - from as little as 51m off the men’s tee at the second to 175m at the 7th (possibly requiring a wood for weaker hitters).
La Noria combines a number of technical holes with others where distance is a factor. Three magnificent lakes and a river all come into play. The 2nd is a dog-leg left, 225m par-4. The two-tiered green is protected by the river to the front, a lake to the left and a picturesque waterfall at the back. The 438m par-5 seventh has a bunker to the right of the landing area. It’s important to place the second shot strategically, since the approach is across a river to a split-level green surrounded by bunkers.

Miraflores Golf
Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed. This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse.

The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink!

From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. La Cala Resort Campo America
All three La Cala courses were designed by the renowned course architect, Cabell B. Robinson who was previously employed as Robert Trent Jones’ designer in Europe. Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.

Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Holes The par-3, second, offering panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The reachable par-5, 14th. The approach shot needs to be very accurate as the green is protected by water on the left and is heavily bunkered on the right. The par-5, 18th, a real risk or reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green. However, it is a risky shot that could make or break a round.
Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel
La Cala Resort Campo Asia
Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated, well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control.

This course contrasts with Campo Asia and Campo America with multiple tee positions, wider fairways and bigger, more receptive greens. They are not severely contoured but are well-bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6,014 metres. The layout of 14 of the holes is visible from the tees that also offer fantastic views of the resort and the mountains. The Ojen river plays a part in eight holes, cutting across three fairways. There is one main bridge that measures 45 metres and four smaller bridges over the river. In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel
Signature Holes The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This still leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green. The par-5, 11th is the longest hole, measuring 524 metres. It requires a strong tee shot to avail of the contours and set up the second from the fairway. Anything left will end up in the river.

Only 502 metres off the yellow tees, but being uphill all the way to the green it would be impossible to hit the green in two even for the monster hitters. If you get a par here you will have done extremely well. Best Par 3: 4th & 13th is 133 metres in length and the tee box sits high above the green. With water in front and to the left of the green it looks very impressive.
Facilities: Covered driving range, Putting green
Perched in the hills inland from La Cala de Mijas, with panoramic views over Fuengirola to the East and Mijas to the West lies the delightful new 9 hole course of Cerrado del Aguila. With a superb driving range and practice area and a delightful modern clubhouse you will feel at ease as soon as you arrive. The holes all have generous fairways that are in superb condition, as are all of the greens and tees. There are several small lakes on the course that are brought into play on a number of the holes, and they too are all very impressive to look at, bordered neatly by large rocks. The course is not overly long at 5,504 metres off the yellow tee’s, but with 2 par 5’s well over 500 metres having to be played twice it will provide a test for even the longest of hitters.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean.

Signature Holes The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. You tee off from an elevated position with a dry bed water hazard running down the right hand side of the hole, an iron off the tee is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par-3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

LOS LAGOS
Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific. Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.

Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

Signature Hole No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The eighth might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green. Be Happy. Settle for a four.

Mijas Golf LOS OLIVOS
Los Olivos, also designed by Trent Jones and built by Cabell Robinson, opened in 1984. Los Olivos complements Los Lagos, but offers a tighter challenge. This par 70 course measures 6386 yards (5840 metres) was completely refurbished by Cabell Robinson during the season 2000-2001, following Trent Jones’ original design concept. The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world.

Torrequebrada golf course opened in 1976, and was designed by Jose Pepe Gancedo, one of Spain´s most promising golfers. Torrequebrada is considered one of the best courses in Spain and was host to the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979. Golf Torrequebrada is now leading the way on the coast to provide a top level service to all golfers ensuring that their golf is enjoyed. In 2007 there were some major changes at the club, primary the total replacement of the irrigation system on the course which has made a fantastic difference to the condition to the fairways and greens. New Pro Shop, Caddymaster and changing rooms have been updated to make the areas more appealing and modern to all golfers and mirroring the standard expected from a golf course of this standard.

Alhaurín Golf is a truly beautiful course overlooking the Mijas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Apart from its magnificent Severiano Ballesteros designed par 72 course, Alhaurín Golf features superb practising facilities with a spacious natural grass driving range, putting green, chipping green and a pretty 9 hole par 3 academy course. The course is made up of 5 par fives, 5 par threes and 8 par fours providing a balanced game for low and high handicappers alike. Water only comes into play on three holes and greens are lightly guarded by bunkers in most cases. The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature.

Guadalhorce Club de Golf
Guadalhorce Golf Club was inaugurated in 1990 and is typified by its friendly family atmosphere. Its impressive Andalusian mansion was built at the end of the 18th century, and is a green oasis in the midst of the busy capital. Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.

The Par 72 course was originally designed by Kosti Kuronen, but much of it has now been re-designed by one of its most famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.
Signature Holes The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

Parador de Málaga GOLF
By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from 18th or 19th to Malaga airport.

History, Art & Culture
The province of Cadiz is the southernmost of the Iberian Peninsula . It has a perimeter of 586 Km, 260 of which are coastline. It has a surface area of 7,385 Km, divided up into 44 municipal areas. Its population totals just over one million, with the density being just over the national average.
The province played an important role in the discovery and colonization of America during the 15th century. Christopher Columbus and other famous sailors set sail from these ports on their voyages to the New Continent.
Many cultures have left their mark throughout Cadiz ‘s long history. Examples of this are the “Tajo de las Figuras” cave paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz ‘s Museum; the Roman remains of “Baelo Claudia” at Tarifa, and the “Carteia” at San Roque. The province has over 30 castles and fortresses, many of which are in a good state of repair.
The 18th century, Cadiz’s “Golden Century” was dominated by the growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character and introducing new liberal ideas and opening the door for democracy which came to fruition with the drafting of the constitution in 1812. The province of Cadiz is an exceptional and unique area, whose qualities will delight those people seeking tourism that reflects true cultural, festive and ecological values, together with the authentic and essentially Andalusian customs and monuments.
Cadiz has an ancient history. The Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than three thousand years ago. It was here that they built the old ”Gadir” (Cadiz ) around 1,100 B.C., making it the oldest capital in the West. The Romans and the Visigoths also left their marks here. After 711, it was ruled by the Muslims until Alfonso X “The Wise” reconquered it in the middle of the 13th century and it became part of the Kingdom of Castilla.
In the field of religious art, the province also boasts an extraordinary collection of monuments. Good examples of this are the Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz and Jerez. As far as paintings are concerned, examples of works by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many of the province’s churches and museums.

Montenmedio Golf & Country Club
The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services.

Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golfcourse scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
