McDowell’s Magic Shakes up the Race to Dubai The US Open Championship at Pebble Beach served up drama, tension and, once the dust had settled on Graeme McDowell’s magnificent victory, a seismic shake-up of The Race to Dubai. McDowell’s fearless display at Pebble Beach earned the Ulsterman his maiden Major Championship and the notinconsiderable first prize of €1,123,970 which, combined with the €350,940 he collected for winning the recent Celtic Manor Wales Open, propelled him to the head of The Race to Dubai. McDowell took over from long-time leader Ian Poulter, who slips to fourth on €1,396,269, one place above his compatriot Lee Westwood. Ahead of the English duo is a pair of South Africans, namely Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel, who occupy the second and third slots on €1,647,112 and €1,423,261 respectively.
Schwartzel already has two European Tour titles to his name this term, and WGC-CA Champion Els came close to joining him on that mark at Pebble Beach, where he briefly held a share of the lead on the final day but ultimately had to settle for third place and a cheque for €400,206. The man who came closest to denying McDowell victory, Grégory Havret, made the biggest strides in The Race to Dubai, as his runner-up finish saw the flamboyant Frenchman climb from 119th to 13th place – and therefore inside the top 15 who qualify for the Race to Dubai bonus pool at the end of the season. Another player who performed with distinction in California was Germany’s Martin Kaymer, whose tied eighth finish was his best performance at the US Open Championship and his second best finish at a Major, after his tied sixth at the 2009 US PGA Championship.
Perhaps not as well known in the amateur game as some of the mainstream manufacturers, Katsuhiro Miura has built an enviable reputation in the professional ranks for precision crafted clubs. Indeed, the 91 and 94 Masters Champions both played clubs made by Miura as did the 2001 and 2004 double US Open winner.
AUTHORIZED DEALER

Thanks to his use of the finest mild steel and high temperature triple forging, his clubs have a dense molecular structure which imparts a more penetrating ball flight. The hand crafted heads are also progressively weighted to tolerances of less than +/- 0.5g ensuring consistent distance control. Available in blade, cavity back and midsize design, each set is custom balanced and fitted. They are, quite simply, the finest golf clubs in the world.
Building a set of Miura golf clubs to Katsuhiro Miura’s exacting standards requires a master craftsmen, and David Poulton PGA, based at Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club is the only authorized dealer on the Costa del Sol able to do so. For more information call David on: (+34) 685 990 138.

Bubba Strikes After Rose Blows It
Photo ©TaylorMade
Justin Rose placed the blame for his final-round collapse at the Travelers Championship squarely on his putting as Bubba Watson claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory in Connecticut. Rose, 29, saw his hopes of a second title in the United States slide away at the end of June after a disaster of a final round at TPC River Highlands near Hartford. American left-hander Watson won at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off from United States Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank. Rose, who won his first tournament in the US at the Memorial on June 6, had taken a three-shot lead over Ben Curtis into the last day after rounds of 64, 62 and 68. But the Englishman left the par-70 course on Sunday with a closing 75 on his card having fallen into a tie for ninth place, having completed the back
nine of his final round with one birdie, three bogeys and one double bogey. “It’s hard to play golf when you feel like you’re going to miss every putt from two feet,” Rose said. “I was just that uncomfortable on the greens all day. “My golf game felt fair or thereabouts, but just felt really uncomfortable on the greens. It’s hard to play. “I had a lot of chances early maybe, but I don’t know, just felt uncomfortable and when that’s the case, it’s just hard to get out there and get after it, but I tried to stay in the moment as best I could all day, but yeah, hard one.” It was an all-American play-off after Verplank had posted a final-round, sixunder-par 64 while Watson and Pavin
each posted 66s to all finish on 14 under, with compatriot Chris Riley’s 65 getting him to 13 under for fourth place. Off the 18th tee at the first play-off hole, Pavin, the shortest driver of the ball on the Tour and Watson, the longest, were 102 yards apart and Pavin, 229 from the hole after taking a three wood off the tee, sent his approach into a bunker below the green. Verplank, between them, sent his ball to around eight feet but Watson dialled in his pitching wedge to put the ball inches from the hole. He tapped in, Pavin bowed out after failing to hole out from the bunker, leaving Verplank to hole his birdie putt to extend the play-off. At the par-three 16th, Watson held his nerve for par after Verplank missed his par putt before dissolving into tears.

Cristie Kerr First American to claim No. 1 in Rolex Rankings Cristie Kerr of the U.S. has risen to the top-ranked women’s golf position in the world, based on the Rolex Rankings released Monday. Kerr claimed the No. 1 spot for the first time in her career after winning her second major championship on Sunday, the LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmans. Kerr is the third player in as many weeks to hold the top position, following Jiyai Shin of South Korea and Ai Miyazato of Japan. “It means a tremendous amount,” Kerr said about the No. 1 ranking. “It’s something that I’ve wanted my whole life, I worked for my whole life. I take great pride in being the top American.”
“I said earlier in the week it’s great to be No. 1, but I just got there. I’m there now, but I have to prove that I deserve to be there. So there is still a lot of work ahead. It feels awfully good right now.” Kerr grabbed the coveted No. 1 spot from Ai Miyazato who held the position for one week after she won the ShopRite LPGA Classic, her fourth victory of the 2010 season. Prior to Miyazato, the No. 1 position was held for seven consecutive weeks by South Korea’s Jiyai Shin. Shin ascended to the No. 1 position when long-time Rolex Rankings No. 1 Lorena Ochoa retired. The only other player to hold the top spot is LPGA Tour legend Annika Sorenstam.
Kerr opened the 2010 season with a tie for fourth at the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand and a solo second at the HSBC Women’s Champions in February. She gained her third top-10 of 2010 at the year’s first major with a tie for fifth at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in April and then won the LPGA State Farm Classic two weeks ago. Kerr has not finished lower than 22nd in an event all season. However, Kerr will have to battle to keep the top spot. Since Ochoa’s retirement, the race for No. 1 has been hotly contested. At last week’s LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmans, any number of the top six

players in the world at the beginning of last week – Miyazato, Shin, Suzann Pettersen, Yani Tseng, Kerr and Anna Nordqvist – could have been No. 1 Monday. Since its launch on February 21, 2006, as the first-ever comprehensive world rankings system for women’s golf, the Rolex Rankings had been dominated by Sorenstam and Ochoa. Points are awarded based on the field strength and evaluate a player’s performance over a rolling two-year period weighted in favor of the current year with even more importance placed on the most recent 13 weeks. Kerr was an amateur prodigy who bypassed college to turn professional at the age of 18. She started her professional career on the Duramed FUTURES Tour in 1996 and was an LPGA rookie in 1997. A tough inaugural season sent Kerr back to the LPGA qualifying school in the fall of 1998 where she earned co-medalist honors
with Se Ri Pak and exempt status for the 1998 season. It took Kerr nearly five more years to become a Rolex First-Time winner at the 2002 Longs Drugs Challenge. She next won the Takefuji Classic in 2004 and proceeded to win two more tournaments that year. Kerr has not had a season without a win since. She captured her first major championship title with a two-shot victory at the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Kerr has recently become a strong advocate for building junior girls’ golf programs such as LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. She is also heavily involved in raising money for breast cancer research through her foundation, Birdies for Breast Cancer, which she started shortly after her mother Linda was diagnosed with the disease. The foundation has raised more than $1 million through various fund-raising efforts, including a golf outing featuring LPGA players at Liberty National Golf Club; proceeds from Curvature Wines
made in partnership with Pride Mountain Winery; a partnership with Kwiat Jewelry to design an exclusive collection to benefit the foundation; and a matching pledge program with Mutual of Omaha. In 2009, Kerr also announced a partnership with Liberty Health to create a new women’s health center at the Jersey City Medical Center that will provide breast cancer screenings to the uninsured as well as the insured. GOLFINO G+ Men Future Golf The first G+ Men’s module is the male equivalent of the ladies’ FUTURE GOLF Collection. The basic colour scheme is also in black, white and steel grey; but this module is fused with powerful colours such as burnt orange and ocean, a shade of turquoise, to maximum effect. Bold argyles with abstract polo designs are mixed together with special functional materials like the ultra-light softshell fleece. The houndstooth harrington is a real highlight in this collection and adds a touch of cool to this latest line in golf fashion for men.
Next up for men’s G+ is URBAN ATHLETE. Clean lines and smooth shapes run through a colour scheme of navy, to classic red and sun and on to white, and are fused together with bold striping and subtle argyle details. This cool look is rounded off with a stretch and waterproof jacket made of the ultra-functional material. Highly functional materials are taking the place of the classic cotton-based sportswear to unite fashionable design with the sporting demands set by today’s young golfers.

“It’s a Funny Old Game” Is that football or golf Greavsie? Article written by Kenny Plumb
15
Feature Costa del Sol Golf Guide
Footballing legend Jimmy Greave’s famous catchphrase ‘it’s a funny old game!’ was used to describe the idiosyncrasies of our national sport, but is this line better suited to our other beautiful game?
Golf is a game like no other, it can build you up, and then knock you down within a heartbeat. Of course, football can do the same, in fact I could probably hear a decent argument for that same sentiment in any sport. But while other sports may have the ability to infuriate and even bewilder at times, surely no other can take you from greatness to total incompetence so easily and so frequently? What other sport takes you from playing like Ernie Els to playing like Ernie Wise in the space of a single shot? We have all hit that perfect shot, middle of the clubface that flies like an exorcet to it’s intended target with unerring accuracy. Then the next shot squirts off at a right angle never to be seen again!! We have all stood on the first tee and hit a glorious drive straight down the middle of the fairway. Then you hear the voices in your head “this is it, today is the day when it all comes good” or “ I knew that slight change of grip would work, now it’s a personal best score!”. But what happens next? That’s right, you hit your next shot fat and it travels no further than 40 yards! Or you try and reach that green in 2 and thin it into the water! Suddenly the game is not so beautiful, the veins in the neck are more pronounced, the grip on the club is getting tighter, the anger building up!! Yes, this is golf at it’s most humiliating frustrating best. All of us who have played sport regularly have heard people curse themselves after mis-hitting a volley, I have seen people throw themselves to the floor after an open goal miss, I have even witnessed grown men cry when their team lose to that last minute header. But please tell me in what other sport would you see Bank Managers, Lawyers
or Head’s of huge Corporate industries come out with the sort of language that would get you locked up in the streets on a Saturday night in your local town? But we hear it all on the golf course! Even new words you didn’t know existed! I have heard expletive rants that have lasted for 20 to 30 seconds! Do you hear this in squash? cricket? tennis? Well, there was a certain Mr Mcenroe who liked the odd rant, but not even Superbrat himself can come close to the verbals you can hear out on our glorious fairways. But that is what golf can do to you, it can turn decent, well educated, law abiding people into your run of the mill drunken lout! But isn’t this why we love it? Our second angry golfer may not be verbal, but shows his frustrations in other more entertaining ways. Surely we have all seen this player? The one who hit’s a bad shot and then the next thing we hear is the whirring of a golf club as it flies through the air over our head? I certainly have never witnessed a footballer miss an open goal, take his boots off and throw them away, nor a cricketer launch his bat. Maybe you have, but surely not with the alarming rate as we see on the golf course. Then there is the famous over the knee manoeuvre which usually involves the putter, but which has also been done to the odd wedge or maybe 7 iron. I am certain somebody out there has probably tried to do it with the driver, but these new graphite shafts are unbelievable durable! Yes, there is no other sport where you would you pay over £200 for a piece of equipment, to then snap it over your knee without a seconds thought. For anyone who has played our game long enough, we have all seen it done to the poor Odysseys, Rossa’s and even the odd Scotty Cameron!
We then move onto the 3rd type of angry golfer. No swearing, no sudden bouts of destruction, just a calmness that is both terryfying but gut wrenchingly funny at the same time. I have only witnessed it once and could not believe what I was seeing. A gentleman at my home Club was having what can only be described as a ‘shocker’. Five lost balls, and only 3 stableford points to show for 6 holes of golf. Yes, we had the involuntary touret like swearing on the 2nd tee when his divot on the 167 yard par 3 went further than his ball, and the putter became airborne on the 6th green after the third three putt in a row. But what happened on that 7th fairway will live with me forever. After fatting his second ball into the small lake that protects the green, my calm playing partner proceeded to pick up his bag, walk to the side of the lake, turn it upside down and empty the entire contents into the water. He then calmly put the empty bag back over his shoulder, said his goodbyes to the three of his open mouthed playing partners, walked back across the fairways, got into his car and drove slowly away! Similar events happen in golf courses all over the World. The one where players throw their bags into lakes, others driving their electric buggies into them, it goes on. Surely the only sport where we spend thousands in equipment to destroy them at a seconds notice! Again, this is golf at it’s worst, but funny best. So I ask again is football really a funny old game? Yes, I believe it is, but none are quite as funny……………nor soul destroying, as the game we love. As Sir Alex Ferguson once famously said “football eh?.. bloody hell!” surely he meant golf right?

The Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club from 29th July to 1st August
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew will defend her title at the 2010 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club from 29thJuly to 1st August. Catriona (pictured left) will be joined by the winner of the year’s first Major, Yani Tseng, and Michelle Wie, who won the Ricoh Women’s British Open Amateur Medal in 2005 at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Catriona triumphed at the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club only 11 weeks after the birth of her second daughter, Sophie, and just three weeks before her 40th birthday.
In recognition of her extraordinary win, Matthew was recently selected by her fellow LPGA players as the recipient of the Heather Farr Player Award which honours an LPGA player who has demonstrated determination, perseverance and spirit in fulfilling her goals as a player. She was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List and was also named 2009 Ladies European Tour Player of the Year. Yani won her second Major title earlier this month at the 2010 Kraft Nabisco Championship after a final round 68 which included a pace-setting eagle at the second hole. She held off the intimidating challenge of a number of

Michelle Wie (pictured right), who won her first LPGA title in Mexico last year, is looking forward to a return to Royal Birkdale having finished tied third there in 2005 and was the youngest Amateur Medal winner. Five years on since impressing the knowledgeable Birkdale crowd, she turned twenty in October, making her one of the youngest members of the 2009 US Solheim Cup team. Catriona said, “I am really excited to be defending my title at Birkdale. I have had a remarkable 12 months since the birth of Sophie which would probably have been more than enough excitement on it’s own. Add that to winning my first Major and I feel very fortunate.”
She continued, “I certainly didn’t arrive at Lytham last year with high expectations but I was still putting a lot of pressure on myself as I knew I needed a good finish to have a hope of qualifying for the European Solheim Cup team. This year will obviously be different with the pressures that accompany any defending champion but I am looking forward to it. What a wonderful position to be in and I know I will feel enormous pride when I am announced on that first tee as the defending Champion.” Yani, whose latest Major triumph has taken her to Number Two on the Rolex World Rankings added, “Winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship has given me a lot of confidence so now I am very excited for the rest of the year’s Majors. I enjoyed playing links golf last year and am looking forward to playing at Royal Birkdale for my first time.”

Last month the Classic Car Club visited Monte Mayor. The Classic Car Club of Andalucia was formed in September 2008 in response to growing activity in the classic car world in southern Spain. By the end of 2009 the Club had gathered almost 400 members and often organises as many as four events in a single month.
Club members include many names and personalities from the world of motorsport and entertainment, past and present. Monthly classic car runs and club-nights are the very bedrock of the club and these events are always well supported. Membership to the club is limited, however qualification is simple and open to classic car
enthusiasts that relish driving through the beautiful Andalucian countryside, enjoying unique restaurants and visiting interesting destinations whilst savouring good food and wines and, more important, good company! Monthly club nights and dinners are held at El Chaparral Golf Club, Mijas Costa, on the first Tuesday of every month. For more information visit www.cccandalucia.com

Scotty Cameron California Working together like cool jazz and fine wine.
The classics are reborn with a modern twist. Artistic design meets hightech engineering. What’s feel-good familiar is entirely brand new. Scotty Cameron’s latest putter line - California - embodies all of the unique attributes that make his fine milled putters instruments of putting art - high-quality, precision-milled stainless steel; refined, masterful design aesthetics; Tour-proven, customizable
specifications; smart, interchangeable weighting; and classic accessories to match. Simply entitled California, the new putter line includes the milled-from-the-block Coronado pintail, compact Sonoma wide-body, elegant Monterey blade and refined Del Mar mid-mallet. Named after some of Scotty’s favorite California towns, each high-toe model merges the best of classic, old world putter design with
modern, performance-based technology. Interchangeable sole weights give players the ability to match a putter’s headweight to a preferred length, while the misted honey dipped finish complemented with translucent merlot and French vanilla paintfill will remind players of a golden California evening as the sun dips into the Pacific. It’s modern and classic working together like cool jazz and fine wine.

Travellers Guide Turismo Costa del Sol / www.visitacostadelsol.com
Nobody from any country in the western world will find any fundamental differences between southern Spanish society and the one they left behind. The real difference will probably be the climate, since few western countries outside the Mediterranean basin enjoy such a luxury. The people are, of course, different, and they speak a different language and have different customs, but it is the marked friendliness of the Andalusians, their gastronomy and their traditions – all different from ours - that prompt most people to come here in the first place. The climate on the Iberian Peninsula is generally stable, and as far as meteorological science permits, weather forecasts are reliable. The seasons are fairly predictable, with periods of rain in the Costa del Sol from the end of September to the end of November, and in March and April. Rain and sunshine can alternate on any given day during these periods, and it is rare to have rain falling for more than two or three days at a time.
The beaches on the Costa del Sol are largely sandy, but there are also many pebble beaches where foot-ware is advised. Tourists coming to the Costa del Sol in winter are advised to take umbrellas and raincoats, although such items can be purchased cheaply in local shops. Opening hours for shops tend to change from winter to summer. In general, summer shopping times are from 10 in the morning to 1.30 or 2 in the afternoon, and from 5.30 to 9 at night. In important tourist areas, many shops open later than nine in the morning, and remain open during siesta time and until quite late at night. Spanish law permits supermarkets to open on Sundays in large tourist areas during the summer period. Bars, restaurants and cafeterias have more flexible opening hours, generally in accordance with the requirements of their clients.
Public institutions and banks open only in the mornings, although more essential services may be available in the afternoons as well. The banks close on Saturdays only in summer, while savings banks (cajas de ahorros, to all practical purposes, similar to banks) always close on Saturdays. Health care is comprehensive on the Costa del Sol, with a complete network of hospitals and health centres all over the province of Malaga. Tourists from the European Union should carry the new European health card, which substitutes the old E-111 form. In any case, emergency treatment is immediate, with or without a card, which is necessary only for subsequent paperwork. Public safety in the province of Malaga, as in all of Spain, is in the hands of the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Autonomous Police and the Local or Municipal Police. These police forces work together, and people with problems that require immediate police attention can call on any of them. The easiest way of calling the police is by phoning 091, the National Police number, or calling to any police station in person. English is the second language on the Costa del Sol, and it is spoken to some extent by most people in positions of authority in the province of Malaga, especially in the coastal areas. English is less widely spoken in the interior of the province, except in large towns or tourist areas. Tourism offices usually have personnel capable of communicating in English, French and German. Electrical current in Spain is 220 volts, and the electrical plug used is two-point. Adaptors must thus be used for any electrical appliance that does not use the two-point plug, and transformers must be used with appliances that use a different voltage. It is advisable to take these with you.
All Town Halls have a lost-objects department, although found objects are frequently handed in at the nearest police station. If handbags or wallets have been left in bars or restaurants, it is worth going back to check with the management: they generally keep them for a week or so before handing them over to the police. Given the cosmopolitan character of the Costa del Sol, there are places of worship for most major religions, with Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other minority religious centres on the coast. Alcaidesa Links LINKS COURSE
The topography of the terrain in Alcaidesa Links consists of rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach. It has almost 2 km of beachfront. A considerable number of its holes lie next to the beach, between sand dunes only partially covered by vegetation. The course has an uninterrupted 18-hole round beginning at the first hole by the Clubhouse and not returning to the latter until the 18th, also located by the Clubhouse. The difficulty on the course mainly concerns the prevailing winds in the area. One of the peculiarities that most impresses the visitor are the spectacular views of the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the unobstructed views of the sea from virtually any location on the course.

Private and group classes are available in several different languages, covering beginners, experienced players or those wishing to obtain licences. There are even special courses for children. The driving range has 72 booths, half of which are roofed, and a large practice area with putting green, bunkers and pitching area.

Alcaidesa Links HEATHLAND COURSE
Apart from the classic Links-type course, which has been Alcaidesa’s flagship since 1992, since 2007 there is a new Heathland one, which recovers the gently undulating landscape and typical groves of the area. Thanks to Dave Thomas, the famous golf course designer, this golf course is now the best setting for any type of golf championship. The new course designed by Dave Thomas Ltd offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5 & 17th & 18th) where the course has the feel of a Heathland course with wide fairways & outstanding views of the Mediterranean sea & the local mountain ranges, including the sierra Nevada, to the river valley where the holes meander along the valley & incorporate various water features/hazards.

The San Roque Club OLD COURSE
Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional.

The San Roque Club NEW COURSE
Designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros the New Course opened in 2003, since then it has blossomed into a mature and well respected course which can hold court with the best of them in the area. Celebrating its first European Tour tournament after only 3 years – the Spanish Open 2006 - the course has already won a multitude of fans the world over. The design depicts a links course in many holes and it also has many unique Dye features which is rare for a European course. It is a challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers, but with five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course, it is also possible for higher handicap players to enjoy. Nevertheless, the course is designed to reward canny tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard four of the greens, also defended by more than 100 bunkers.

27 holes
Almenara is a truly glorious and unspoilt 27-hole complex divided between Los Lagos (The Lakes), Los Pinos (The Pines) and Los Alcornoques (The Oaks) - each very special for their individuality. The greens are usually very quick, which can require some creative thinking and feel to navigate.
Oaks & Lakes: 18 holes, Par 72 6083m • 5910m • 5013m
Los Lagos is a stunning part of the course and a true test of golf. As you would expect from the name, water comes in to play on four of the holes. Los Pinos begins with a Par 5 leading straight downhill before winding its way through a series of superb holes more representative of a parkland course. This provides a good contrast to Los Lagos, yet retains the need for excellent course management. Los Alcornoques is perhaps the most exposed to the elements of the three sides, and mixes up a selection of holes to test your nerve and accuracy.
Pines & Oaks: 18 holes, Par 72 6095m • 5926m • 4861m Lakes & Pines: 18 holes, Par 72 6252m • 5996m • 5136m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving range, Putting green, Golf academy, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Sauna, Gym, Hotel
Signature Holes Each of the nine holes has it’s own unique character and standout holes - whichever you play, you won’t be disappointed. The tricky par 3, 7th on Los Lagos is a challenge rewarded by its setting - a long iron or wood over a lake to the green which is protected by a bunker at the front. On Los Alcornoques, club selection is vital at both Par 3’s - depending on the wind the whole character of this course can change.

La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other memberonly facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience. The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop.

Valderrama GOLF CLUB
Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year.

Signature Hole Hole 4. La Cascada. Par 5. 516m. Robert Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

Signature Holes The seventh is widely considered the best on the course. It doglegs to the left with out of bounds on the same side. The drive should be played slightly right of centre. A precise second shot is required to a narrow, well-guarded green. Any shot bouncing on the left edge of the green will kick towards the centre, so favour this side and stay dry!

RCG Sotogrande REAL CLUB DE GOLF
Founded in 1964, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is located on prime golfing land close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. Anyone lucky enough to have played at one of Spain’s foremost members’ clubs will be able to confirm Robert Trent Jones was right to take pride in what is an extraordinarily good design. RCG Sotogrande is often voted to be among the top ten golf courses in Europe – and rightly so. “Sotogrande Old”, as it is called by the locals, boasts mature vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings. The greens are large with typical Trent Jones contours - and the tees are very long, some would say excessively so, but they allow for variations in pin placement and the length of hole.

La Cañada GOLF CLUB
The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play.

Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

La Duquesa Golf & Country Club
Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar. On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa.

The objective of the course at Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest.

The prettiest hole of the course, and one of the prettiest of the Costa del Sol, is the 8th, as acknowledged by the majority of the Club’s members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace.

Signature Holes Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water. We suggest hitting the green!

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After the game wander into T’s Bar. Newly opened by Stuart. Relax and enjoy drinks and food on their sunny terrace.

Situated in the beautiful Resina estate lies the sublime short course of La Resina. The 9 hole layout is made up of 2 par fours and 7 par 3’s. However don’t be fooled into thinking that you will have a round full of birdies and pars, as this course is challenging with a varied terrain of hills, lakes and extreme rough to overcome. Common to all the holes is the quality of the greens. As the greenkeepers come from Valderrama they are in sublime condition, and run perfectly true. We would highly recommend this course for all who want a nice quick 9 or 18 holes, or to all who want to improve their short game. Also a great course for beginners or high handicappers looking to improve their game before moving onto the larger courses. In all great fun and extremely good value for the Costa del Sol.
If you hit the green you still have a lot of work to do as the green is on 2 levels and runs fairly steeply up from front to back. Two putting from anywhere outside 15 feet is good.

Flamingos: 18 holes, Par 71 5714m • 5456m • 4828m
There are few better indications of quality than the honour of hosting a major event in your inaugural year and this was what happened at Flamingos. The Dr Antonio Garcia Garrido designed layout welcomed the European Senior PGA 2002 Championship final, and again in 2003 and 2004. With spectacular views of the sea and mountains, Africa and Gibraltar, a large natural lake around which the whole resort has been built and luxuriant vegetation, this course is one you’ll also want to keep coming back to.
Alferini Golf Course Without a doubt a star project since it was inaugurated in 2007. It has been a real challenge for its designer, D. Cristóbal Guerrero. Set out between the mountains and with magnificent views of the sea and the Resort, this par-73 layout extends to almost 7,000 metres along fairways lined by pines, orange trees, cypresses and holm oaks. It is a glorious place to play golf. Blessed by superb drainage, it’s also perfect all year-round.

Each of the 18 holes represents the garden of a Tuscan Villa, where you will find Roman columns, classical statues and marble bridges on the fairways and corners of the course. Each hole is also defined by its own tree: cypress, orange, nisper, jacaranda, pine, olive, chestnut, pomegranate and many more.

For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge.
Signature Hole Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.
Facilities: Buggies, Trolleys, Driving range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Hotel
The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary! Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

OLD COURSE
Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Championships winner who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With its wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well.

Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a midiron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Atalaya Golf NEW COURSE
Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. The New Course is rapidly catching up with the Old in terms of quality and in the summer months there are great bargains to be had for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

The South Course is the oldest course of the Gualdalmina complex. It was designed by Javier Arana in 1959 and is renowned for its difficulty, making it more suitable for experienced players. Fairways are narrow and well protected by old trees. The North Course, designed by Folco Nardi in 1973, is shorter and hillier with more water obstacles. The course requires straight drives as failure to do so may find one of the numerous water hazards hidden in the rough.

Featuring one of the most picturesque green settings on the Costa del Sol, this downhill dogleg right hole follows the sweeping contours of the fairway, turning to reveal a peninsula green nestled by the lakeside. An accurate drive is required if the player is to successfully reach the green in two. Good judgement of distance with a short iron could equally set up a birdie opportunity, though water is a factor if the pin is placed back right.

Built and maintained to the highest standards, this full length par 36, 9 hole layout is an absolute joy to play. Always perfectly manicured and with incredible putting surfaces, designer Roderick Segar has shown a great understanding and sympathy of the gently undulating terrain on which the course sits. Water forms an integral part of the course - with manmade lakes that are defined by their stylish black slate surrounds contrasting with the breathtakingly beautiful natural lake which comes into play on the 4th and 5th holes. Quick, true greens are up there with the best, and give the opportunity for the greenkeepers to put in some devilish pin positions due to the combination of slopes and hazards. But this course is perfect for golfers of any level, either for a quick 9 holes, or trying to better your score with another trip round.

Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club
Los Arqueros is the first golf course on the Costa del Sol designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1991. In the last years all efforts have focused to obtain the environmental certificate (ISO 14.001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and Quality (UNE 188.001), thus positioning Los Arqueros probably among the very few golf courses in Spain to have achieved it. Los Arqueros offers an interesting round of golf suitable for low and high handicap players. Accuracy & direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round. The topography of the course follows the natural contours with contrasting landscapes including three lakes and several streams which make each hole a different challenge. The excellent conditions of fairways and greens together with the enviable setting and magnificent views of the mountains and Mediterranean sea makes a visit to Los Arqueros an unforgettable experience.

One of the best par 4’s on the course. The fairway veers slightly to the left leading to a wide green.

Surrounded by amazing houses and villas from the Spanish high society, this uphill course leads to the Ronda mountains. Finally, Course C, Guadaiza, although easier than course B, there are many slopes and a few dog legs. There is also La Quinta Golf Academy - equipped with the most modern facilities, such as the digital swing analysis system.

Quality & Service For the last 3 years the club has been working on the landscaping and course quality together with quality of the services. A good example is the interval between each tee-time, which has been amplified for the comfort and benefit of the players - and the club has also incorporated a Bag Drop service in order to simplify the check-in process from the moment the player arrives to club parking until they are on the first tee.

Signature Holes The 4th is possibly one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, with a green guarded by a small river and big bunkers to the left, right and behind. The 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. From a solid tee shot you still have a long iron to the green - bogey here is a good result! The famous finishing hole is a long par 5, with the clubhouse behind the green. Before reaching the green there are several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed.

Magna Marbella is a nine hole, par 29 course including excellent practice facilities and driving range with golf school. Handicap: Men 24, Ladies 28 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Hole Hole 2. This elegant and picturesque par 4 is just one of the highlights at the long established Aloha Golf Club, designed by the late Javier Arana. Many will choose to play an iron from the tee for position and take their chances for a birdie on the subtle contours of the green. From the elevated tee, water impedes the narrow landing area of the fairway on the right, with a bunker protecting the green at the front.
Facilities: Buggies, Electric trolleys, Driving range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Sauna
Most visiting golfers have heard of Aloha, it’s one of the best known courses on the Costa del Sol. Like many of the other older ones it has seen substantial improvements in recent years, particularly the replanting of the fairways and a general upgrading of the clubhouse and changing rooms. Overall there’s a wide mix of holes, characterised by mostly wide fairways - although you’ll have big problems if you stray either side of them. All the holes have highly individual, apt names. The second, for instance, is called ‘Uresandi’, the Basque word for a lot of water - and three lakes certainly is a lot of water. The eleventh is Las Aguilas (Eagles) as the hole is so close to the mountain that twitchers may catch sight of one. Although the club is private, visitors are welcome all year. It’s advisable to telephone in advance - this course is very popular.

The joy of a nocturnal game of golf is alleviated with the absence of rough, ensuring that play moves at a steady pace, and the lighting has been carefully and strategically placed so that no shadows are cast.
This unusual and enchanting golf course is located just a few minutes away from Marbella town centre. A fairly new nine-hole par 3 course nestling in the foothills of La Concha, with spectacular Mediterranean views.

Driving away from the Mediterranean sea the prevailing wind comes from your left. Going down the right side of the fairway leaves a shorter second, but a grassy knoll slightly impedes the view to the green. The putting surface is nestled amongst the trees on the other side of the river, which is a genuine hazard. A lay up area is provided for those who require three (or more!) shots to get there.

Rio Real GOLF
This course has been in existence for over fifty years and was named after the Real river, which comes into play on several of the fairways. It’s a scenic course even though it is, on the whole, flat. Inaugurated in 1965, designed by Javier Arana, this magnificent 18-hole par 72 golf course is set in a beautiful sloping valley with challenging greens. On the par 4 tenth don’t worry if you don’t reach the dogleg on the fairway with the first shot - nobody is perfect! Choose your second shot to the green - if you play short it will be much easier. If you decide to go for it - over the pines and hill - hold your breath until fellowplayers audibly confirm your success. The par 5 thirteenth is the longest and most spectacular hole. Imitate Tiger Woods by reaching the green in three strokes if you can.

Signature Hole The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards and hillsides to contend with should you be wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182 metres from the men’s, and a massive 208 from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18-hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills.

Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Holes Signature holes have to be special and the second hole at Greenlife cetainly is. When played from the back tee you have little to aim for: a small green surrounded by water and trees.
Greenlife Golf is one of the hidden treasures amongst the courses on the Costa del Sol. A sublime nine-hole par three course set in the beautiful surroundings of Elvira Hills, it boasts beautifully manicured fairways and greens lined with olive and cork trees. The variable terrain makes a complicated test for golfers of all levels. You will find longer courses on the coast but none that provide such a challenge to your short game.
Facilities: Trolleys, Driving Range, Pro shop, Clubhouse, Putting green, Golf Academy, Clay tennis courts, Fitness Centre, Sauna, Accommodation, Restaurante El Lago
The 9th is the longest hole, at 165 metres, and to hit the green only the best shot will suffice. Play it from the back tee - anything else will spoil it. Out of bounds runs along the left hand side of the fairway towards a two tier green with bunkers right and left. If you miss the green, expect a difficult approach requiring a lot of skill. You won’t find many par 3’s as hard as this, so play it as a par 4. You’ve been warned!
The hole has a touch of the 17th at Sawgrass to it. We can only advise you select the correct club, aim straight and swing true in order to make the putting surface. Good luck!

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north. The splendid 19th century clubhouseepitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking. The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.

This short 9 hole par 3 golf course is designed by Enrique Canales and opened in 1990. Great views and an undulated course with mature vegetation make La Siesta a pleasant visit. Although a private club, visiting golfers are always welcome. It is certainly a course to sharpen up your short game. The distances vary considerably - from as little as 51m off the men’s tee at the second to 175m at the 7th (possibly requiring a wood for weaker hitters).
La Noria combines a number of technical holes with others where distance is a factor. Three magnificent lakes and a river all come into play. The 2nd is a dog-leg left, 225m par-4. The two-tiered green is protected by the river to the front, a lake to the left and a picturesque waterfall at the back. The 438m par-5 seventh has a bunker to the right of the landing area. It’s important to place the second shot strategically, since the approach is across a river to a split-level green surrounded by bunkers.

Miraflores Golf
Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green. Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed. This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse.

The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. La Cala de Mijas
La Cala Resort Campo America
All three La Cala courses were designed by the renowned course architect, Cabell B. Robinson who was previously employed as Robert Trent Jones’ designer in Europe. Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.
18 holes, Par 72 • 6009m • 5600m • 4605m
Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Holes The par-3, second, offering panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The reachable par-5, 14th. The approach shot needs to be very accurate as the green is protected by water on the left and is heavily bunkered on the right. The par-5, 18th, a real risk or reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green. However, it is a risky shot that could make or break a round.
Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel
La Cala Resort Campo Asia
Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated, well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control.

La Cala Resort Campo Europa
This course contrasts with Campo Asia and Campo America with multiple tee positions, wider fairways and bigger, more receptive greens. They are not severely contoured but are well-bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6,014 metres. The layout of 14 of the holes is visible from the tees that also offer fantastic views of the resort and the mountains. The Ojen river plays a part in eight holes, cutting across three fairways. There is one main bridge that measures 45 metres and four smaller bridges over the river. In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.

Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Buggies, Driving Range, Putting green, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Pool, Tennis, Gym, Sauna, Hotel
Signature Holes The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This still leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green. The par-5, 11th is the longest hole, measuring 524 metres. It requires a strong tee shot to avail of the contours and set up the second from the fairway. Anything left will end up in the river.

Only 502 metres off the yellow tees, but being uphill all the way to the green it would be impossible to hit the green in two even for the monster hitters. If you get a par here you will have done extremely well. Best Par 3: 4th & 13th is 133 metres in length and the tee box sits high above the green. With water in front and to the left of the green it looks very impressive.
Facilities: Covered driving range, Putting green
Perched in the hills inland from La Cala de Mijas, with panoramic views over Fuengirola to the East and Mijas to the West lies the delightful new 9 hole course of Cerrado del Aguila. With a superb driving range and practice area and a delightful modern clubhouse you will feel at ease as soon as you arrive. The holes all have generous fairways that are in superb condition, as are all of the greens and tees. There are several small lakes on the course that are brought into play on a number of the holes, and they too are all very impressive to look at, bordered neatly by large rocks. The course is not overly long at 5,504 metres off the yellow tee’s, but with 2 par 5’s well over 500 metres having to be played twice it will provide a test for even the longest of hitters.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean.

Signature Holes The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. You tee off from an elevated position with a dry bed water hazard running down the right hand side of the hole, an iron off the tee is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par-3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Mijas Golf Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific. Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.
Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Signature Hole No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.
Facilities: Electric trolleys, Buggies, Driving Range, Golf lessons, Clubhouse, Restaurant
Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The eighth might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green. Be Happy. Settle for a four.

Mijas Golf LOS OLIVOS
Los Olivos, also designed by Trent Jones and built by Cabell Robinson, opened in 1984. Los Olivos complements Los Lagos, but offers a tighter challenge. This par 70 course measures 6386 yards (5840 metres) was completely refurbished by Cabell Robinson during the season 2000-2001, following Trent Jones’ original design concept. The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature.

Signature Holes The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

Parador de Málaga GOLF
By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from 18th or 19th to Malaga airport.

Santa Clara Granada Golf Club
From it’s inauguration in August 2006, the spectacular 18 hole TPC course at Santa Clara Golf in Granada has developed into one of the best in the Granada region. Designed by D. Enrique Canales and located in Otura, less than 10 minutes from Granada City centre, the course nestles in the foothills of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountain range. Created with great respect for the natural environment, the course is one of the longest in Andalucia and will challenge players of all standards. The front 9 with its bunkers, “barrancos” and ‘the hill’ is very different from the back 9 which has some long undulating fairways, a lake and a few well placed trees to contend with - altogether making for an interesting and at times, intriguing game of golf. History, Art & Culture
The province of Cadiz is the southernmost of the Iberian Peninsula . It has a perimeter of 586 Km, 260 of which are coastline. It has a surface area of 7,385 Km, divided up into 44 municipal areas. Its population totals just over one million, with the density being just over the national average.
The province played an important role in the discovery and colonization of America during the 15th century. Christopher Columbus and other famous sailors set sail from these ports on their voyages to the New Continent.
Many cultures have left their mark throughout Cadiz ‘s long history. Examples of this are the “Tajo de las Figuras” cave paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz ‘s Museum; the Roman remains of “Baelo Claudia” at Tarifa, and the “Carteia” at San Roque. The province has over 30 castles and fortresses, many of which are in a good state of repair.
The 18th century, Cadiz’s “Golden Century” was dominated by the growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character and introducing new liberal ideas and opening the door for democracy which came to fruition with the drafting of the constitution in 1812. The province of Cadiz is an exceptional and unique area, whose qualities will delight those people seeking tourism that reflects true cultural, festive and ecological values, together with the authentic and essentially Andalusian customs and monuments.
Cadiz has an ancient history. The Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than three thousand years ago. It was here that they built the old ”Gadir” (Cadiz ) around 1,100 B.C., making it the oldest capital in the West. The Romans and the Visigoths also left their marks here. After 711, it was ruled by the Muslims until Alfonso X “The Wise” reconquered it in the middle of the 13th century and it became part of the Kingdom of Castilla.
In the field of religious art, the province also boasts an extraordinary collection of monuments. Good examples of this are the Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz and Jerez. As far as paintings are concerned, examples of works by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many of the province’s churches and museums.
