Santana Golf The Course All Golfers Love to Play
Nearly eight years have now passed since the opening of Santana Golf in January 2004 and, in this period of time, our course has become a favourite among regular golfers to AndalucĂa.
Featured Course
Costa del Sol Golf Guide
It is obvious that the combination of magnificent design, excellent state of preservation and sublime level of professionalism and client attention is conquering the hearts of the many golfers who have played the course. Situated in the “Valle del Golf de Mijas”, which winds its way through a landscape of wild beauty along 6.200 square metres of gently sloping land -previously an avocado farm-, lush forest and other varied vegetation, which gives the immediate impression of a well-established golf course.
Respect to the maintenance condition, it can only be said that Santana Golf is provided with the best resources to ensure an optimum state of conservation. To that end, it includes a modern irrigation system covering the whole course which facilitates the maintenance of 55 hectares with more than 3.500 trees of different species. Furthermore, to always guarantee perfect condition of tees, fairways, greens, etc. the Management upholds a firm policy of limiting the number of daily rounds.
Each hole is a clear example of what a magnificent course should be. The layout is blessed with large tee areas and wide fairways on level terrain -hence easy to walk-, with large putting areas well protected with sand hazards. Nevertheless, it is clear that the design of each hole has been studied carefully to ensure the course is a challenge for even the most discerning of golfers.
Another of the important features that make Santana Golf one of the Costa del Sol´s most popular courses, is that basically all the staff are very much customer orientated, and all that implies, as we offer golfers a quality product, at a price in line with its value. From the first to the last employee to join our team, we are all aware that each client who visits our premises is a very special person.
Even in the present unfavourable economic situation, Santana Golf has managed to maintain its reputation and “brand”, due to the fact that we were fortunate to read the first symptoms of the crisis and react in time, implementing coherent policies of segmentation and client’s loyalty. The company has placed special emphasis on adapting its offer to current demand trend, which, as we all know well, is very price-sensitive. The following are some of the measures implemented in order to bring our policies on stream: “Dynamic Pricing” As great believers of segmentation, we will continue with our policy of “dynamic pricing”, which consist of charging different prices to different groups of clients depending on the availability, period of the year, time of the day, etc.

With this policy, we have adjusted our offers to customer’s needs, with the intention to capture as many golfers as possible through understanding their needs and motivations. We can offer “economy rates”, such as the twotiered “Early Bird” morning promotion, and the “Evening green fee”, as well as the “Twilight” rate for late in the afternoon. For those that wish to enjoy their round of golf without having to wake up early or wish to go back home right on time, we offer our “”Prime time” green fee. “Golf Societies Scheme” We have created a special scheme for all golf societies and groups, which are available to the needs required by their members. “GolfAholic” (Tailor Made Green Fee Packages) This scheme is targeted at those devoted supporters of Santana Golf who wish to play regularly on our course during a specific period

of time. For them, we can prepare a special package of green fees at a very reasonable cost. “Online Bookings” We also offer an On-line Booking system service, which provides clients a fast and easy access to our time sheet and gives the opportunity of benefiting from our special promotions, such as “Last Minute” deals, etc, It is as easy as clicking the www.santanagolf.com web site and enter the Online Bookings option on the front page to check for any specials. “Social Media” Followers In the last 12 months Santana Golf has built a huge family of friends and contacts on the two main social media networks Facebook and Twitter, with who we communicate on a regular basis. We will be also now using this channel to inform all our followers of any special deals, and very good offers will be announced.

“Summer Membership” Another addition to our portfolio is the introduction of a Summer Membership, in response to the many requests from our clients in recent years. So, during the months of June, July and August we can offer the following: • “Monthly Membership” - Individual Unlimited Golf with shared Buggy included for 1.000€ • “Monthly Membership” - Couples Unlimited Golf with shared Buggy included for 1.900€ • “The Par Excellence Golf Membership” Santana Golf and Golf Torrequebrada have signed an agreement to jointly market a common membership. The agreement was finalized last week by both Clubs and consists of a Yearly Membership to be used on the two courses. In addition to this, we have also agreed to launch for this coming Summer a special 3-Month Membership to be equally used at both layouts.
For further information on the above, contact the Caddie Master office greenfees@santanagolf.com 951 062 560 Salva Jaime Gallardo, the Club Manager, will also be available to attend personally to any of your requirements direccion@santanagolf.com
“La Cabaña” Bistro And to round off our excellent offer to our clients, our petit bistro “La Cabaña” can offer you smiling faces and great home cooking when walking through our door. Come in, have a sit, and take in a little of the local flavour. We greet our clients by name, while our professional staff serves you. “La Cabaña” is more than a gathering place for your breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack; it is a place for enjoyment.

distinctive choice of footwear. In the wet, hilly conditions, Couples went sockless and relied on a new hybrid sport-casual model from ECCO – the Golf Street – that he wore from his house, to the practice range and onto the course. “Fred is one of the most admired golfers in the world and has been a tremendous global ambassador for the ECCO brand since 2006,” says Jesper Thuen, Marketing Manager, ECCO Golf. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Golf Street phenomenon with this announcement on the eve of his return to Augusta.”
As part of this multi-year agreement, Couples, will be featured in global marketing and advertising initiatives supporting the ECCO Golf Collection, and appear at company functions. “I am thrilled to be continuing my relationship with ECCO,” says Couples. “They are a fabulous company making some of the world’s most comfortable golf shoes. ECCO is also a leader in creating unique styles, like the Golf Street shoes that I can wear all day, on and off the golf course.”
In 2010, Couples became the first player in history to win three of his first four Champions Tour events. He went on to claim a fourth title and was honoured as the Champions Tour Rookie of the Year and Byron Nelson Award winner. The 51-year-old also captured the world’s attention with an amazing run at the 2010 Masters. He sat alone in the lead after a firstround 66, garnering tremendous international acclaim for his sterling play as well as his
The first and only true hybrid sport-casual shoe, Golf Street is available in new colours and styles for 2011, including a men’s luxury version featuring high-grade uppers made from genuine camel leather. Designed to be worn both on and off the course, its unique versatility is based on an ingeniously engineered outsole that has approximately 100 moulded traction bars with more than 800 tractions angles. Providing excellent grip in all conditions, the wear-resistant and highly durable outsole is constructed from a TPU material that has been shown to last five times longer than rubber. ECCO golf shoes are also worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Graeme McDowell, Aaron Baddeley, Stuart Appleby, Thomas Bjorn, Thongchai Jaidee, Thorbjorn Olesen, Andreas Harto, Gerina Piller, Belen Mozo and Jennifer Johnson. GOLFINO Spring/Summer Collection
Summer Resort Light sportswear for hot summer’s days In combination with savannah-yellow and emerald-green, a powerful pacific-blue and acid-green provide a fresh, explosive mixture of colours. The look is then perfected with an addition of navy and white. For the first time at GOLFINO, mandarin collars and rounded chest and side seams are used in the sleeveless polo shirts. Another GOLFINO first comes in the shape of the double cuffs and functional turn-back cuffs that can be found in this module. The polo shirts with feminine ruffles are combined with pleated shorts with an exclusive pin-striped pattern. Dry Comfort and Sun Protection are the functional standards with the slim cut polo shirts. A further highlight is a sportively light, microfibre stretch skort with coloured seams and drawstring together with a matching waistcoat. Extremely light stretch shorts that can be rolled up and a long blouse in stretch cotton complete this module with a certain Riviera chic. A matching straw visor plus other elements such as epaulette details and diamond buttons provide loving finishing touches. Visit: www.golfino.com

Seve Ballesteros Challenge at La Cala Resort On 9th April, 33 people of various nationalities took part in the Seve Ballesteros Challenge at La Cala Resort – an event which was celebrated simultaneously at 143 golf courses in Spain. There were six different categories, of which the best two results received a trophy. The best scratch result of the day was also rewarded. All 13 of the winners have now been entered into a prize draw along with the rest of the winners from all around Spain, where they will have the chance to win a visit to Santander to visit Seve and to play at Pedreña golf club. The format for the day was medal play, and the youngest player of the day, Alfredo Curbishley, won his category with a score of 75 playing
off a handicap of 5. The Finnish member of La Cala Golf, Markku Railo, together with Enrique Niebla Sanchez, shot the best score of the day, net 73. Antonio Pimentel, playing off +2, shot a 79 and won the 1st category, whilst the best scratch result of the day went to the Swere Pierre Whitlock from Barsebäck golf club. Along with being a fundraising event, the competition was also a qualifying round for the Spanish team of the World Golfers Championship 2011. The player with the best result in each category gained a place in the national final, which will take place on 27th and 28th August at La Cala Resort. Unfortunately, in the 6th category there was no player of Spanish nationality so nobody qualified.
The other 5 who did manage to qualify were Antonio Pimentel Jimenez, Alfredo Curbishley Esnaola, Enrique Niebla Sanchez, Diego Sanchez Jimenez and Fernando Ortega Bautista. Everyone was very satisfied with their day at La Cala Resort, with Diego Sanchez saying that Campo América was “the best course I have played in my life”, whilst Enrique Niebla commented that the course was in very good condition and extremely well looked after. Overall, La Cala Resort raised 870 euros for the foundation on this 54th Seve’s birthday, curiously the same number of holes at the resort (54+6), the biggest golf complex in Spain. Visit www.lacala.com for more information.
Creating Torque! Richard McHardy’s Pro Tips I have no hesitation when I say that most of the power in the Golf swing comes from the upper half (rotation, extension, lag) however the lower half of the of body sometimes gets overlooked. One way I like to look at it is if we were to build a great looking house then we would need to build some pretty solid foundations before we can start on the design and build of the house. Exactly the same with the Golf swing, once we establish a strong lower half we can take full advantage of this and generate huge amounts of power from our shoulders, arms and hands. Here is a drill I work on regularly which helps stabilise the lower half, you can either use a ball which I have gone with here or you can use a range basket. The one thing you need to remember is that it is all about rotation and
not lateral movement. Once you “slide” with the lower half, you will disturb your correct swing path meaning there will never be consistent accuracy and also a complete lack of power. What I like to focus on is feeling that I am squeezing the ball with the inside of my legs paying more attention to my right leg. Here I try to maintain the weight on the inside of my right foot and that my right knee is also on the inside of my foot (see image). You should also feel that your right quad muscle is ready to “spring” back into impact, similar to an Olympic sprinter off the blocks. Don’t forget this also creates resistance and torque which contributes hugely to club head speed. Try this drill out, it will improve your ball striking greatly as well as delivering better distance and direction.

Hole 7, New Course
New Pro Am Event Kicks Off at the San Roque Golf Resort On Sunday 17th April, The Costa del Sol Golf Guide and HWH Golf held their first Pro Am Event at the spectacular San Roque Golf Resort. The excellent Perry Dye designed New Course was the venue and it became even more challenging than usual due to the blustery conditions. The format of the day was a Team and Individual strokeplay, with each team consisting of 1 Professional and 3 Amateur partners. The scoring was fairly standard considering the wind , but there was still a handful of players who managed to perform well on the day. For the Amateurs, the father and daughter pairing of Martin and Elle Stewart mastered the conditions and finished 1st and 2nd respectively. The Professional’s were headed by the coast stalwart Rod Bastard from the Marbella Golf Resort, who shot a very impressive level par 72, which under the conditions was
enough to win by 6 shots from the young pro Phil Genev from San Roque Golf Resort. Kenny (Costa del Sol Golf Guide) & Wynne (HWH Golf) the event organisers, were delighted with the turn out and the excellent facilities offered from San Roque. They are hoping the event can now go on to be the number one event that Professionals and their amateurs turn to on the coast. With great sponsors such as Quintillion Asset Management, Bridgestone and Golfino all pledging their continued support throughout 2011, the event looks to only get bigger and better as the year goes on.
Winners:Professional – 1st Rod Bastard (72), 2nd Phil Genev (78) Amateur – 1st Martin Stewart, 2nd Elle Stewart Team – Rod, Martin, Elle, Gavin Nearest the Pins (Amateurs) – 4th Malcolm McHardy, 17th Cameron Greer
The next Pro Am is at the sensational Arcos Gardens Golf & Country Club, home to the Tour Qualifying School. For further details or to book your place, please call or email:Kenny – 663 266 851 or kenny@costadelsolgolfguide.com Wynne – 661 565 551 0r wynne@hwh-golf.com

Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. Venue for the Spanish Open 2005 and 2006 as well as the European Tour Qualifying School Finals from 1993 to 2007, The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a Tour professional. Opened in 1991, and designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the Old Course is rarely outside the top 5 courses in Spain. The first 9 holes wind through Cork Oaks whilst the back 9
are dominated by water hazards. The 18th hole can either make or break your game, adding a spectacular finish to some of the most beautiful 18 holes you will ever play. The San Roque Club is almost unmatched for scenery & elegance. Membership is about exclusivity and the sense of belonging to a family of privileged golfers benefitting from the unique experience the club has to offer. The natural beauty of the area, historic clubhouse, two championship 18 hole courses, equestrian centre, tennis and padel courts, gymnasium and renowned Japanese Restaurant Kamakura make it one of Spain’s top clubs.

La Reserva de Sotogrande is an exclusive golf club situated in a spectacular location, with stunning views of the sea and the mountains. It has an 18-hole golf course covering a surface area of 72 hectares, a driving range, and one of the most salubrious clubhouses in Spain. The 6,000 m2 Clubhouse has been designed in the purest Andalusian style. It has areas for the exclusive use of members, like the exceptionally large changing rooms, gymnasium, lounges and other member-only facilities. The interior has been very carefully thought out, with handmade wrought-iron fittings and hand woods, lending a rustic and refined ambience.
The restaurant has been influenced by the hand of the catering consultant, Ferrán Adriá, of NH Hotels, and the Club´s kitchen staff have been trained at the “El Bulli” catering workshop. Signature Hole: Hole 17. Par 4. A test even to players of the highest level. A classic long par 4 with an impressive lake running along the entire of the right-hand side of the hole right up to the green. The play from the tee is to drive the ball towards the bunkers on the left, but to make the second shot easier you can flirt with the water and benefit from being able to fire your approach at the flag with slightly less concern.

Having received numerous awards, Valderrama is widely recognised as being the best course in Europe and one of the top golf courses in the world. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships
- American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. Hole 4, Par 5. 516m. Trent Jones classified this hole as one of his best par 5s, and described it as a delight to the eye. From the first landing area you look up towards a green that is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. Behind it, a spring sends water cascading down along the right side of the green, finally falling about 10 to 12 feet into a lake that sits to the right of the green.

The only municipal course on the Costa del Sol, and a key factor in the fact that the town of Guadiaro produces more Spanish champions than any other place in the country. The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a

popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. Signature Holes La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa. Signature Holes The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

Casares Golf
La Duquesa
The objective of Casares is to entertain - and it does this very successfully. Its 9 holes are spread out with a varied design over the flat terrain of a valley and stand out for their fairways, on which precision is one of the keys to a good game. With three par 3’s and one par 5, the course offers golfers the possibility of playing all sorts of shots. The course is not overly long - the par 5, 7th is the longest at 472 m, whereas the 4th hole is the shortest. The prettiest hole of the course, and one of the prettiest of the Costa del Sol, is the 8th, as acknowledged by the majority of the Club’s
members. This may be due to the fact that it is a hole for recovery - it measures 298 metres, is completely straight and the green is surrounded by vegetation. The stylish clubhouse is a great place to relax in the bar, or out on the terrace. Toughest hole: Without doubt the par 5 7th that demands a long and straight drive if attempting to hit the green in 2. Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway and water in front of the green add to the difficulty of the hole. Best Par 3: 4th. Only 100 metres in size but the tee is raised over 80 feet above the green making club selection interesting. Short or long and your in the water.

18 holes of peaceful undulating Spanish countryside boasting stunning sea views from many areas of the course, Estepona Golf provides a fair test enjoyed by players of all standards. Renowned for their superb, consistent putting surfaces, the course features a wide variety of holes. The English owned golf course has for many years focused on the visiting golfer from overseas, with knowledgeable, multilingual staff always offering a warm friendly welcome. The clubhouse has recently benefited from a €400,000 renovation, where a superb selection of multinational food, wine and drinks are
available in the comfortable restaurant, bar and terrace. With an ongoing course improvement programme in place, a visit to Estepona Golf is always incredible value for money. Signature Hole: Hole 10. Par 4. A beautiful downhill short par 4 with the green surrounded by water. The tee shot is very straight forward if you choose to play safe, however you may feel that at only 250 meters downhill and the wind behind that it is worth having a go with 3 wood or driver. A straight one will make an eagle/birdie very possible - but just slightly out and you are looking at a 6. Decisions, decisions!

Monte Mayor Golf opened in 1989. Designed by José Cancedo, this is a fantastic and challenging Golf Course known as one of the most spectacular on the Costa del Sol. The Golf course is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The valley in which Monte Mayor is laid out clings to the slope of Monte Mayor. The ruins of a 10th Century Moorish Fort crown the summits of Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor’s Fairways are of Bermuda 419. The driving range is breathtaking. Buggies are included with the Green Fee. Starting times every 15 minutes. Amongst the Pros, Alex Cejka, the course record holder (66), practiced a lot
here and enjoyed to work all his shots at Monte Mayor. Monte Mayor is frequently voted into the Top 5 as a golf experience not to be missed. Signature Holes Hole 3: Probably one of the best Par 3’s on the Costa del Sol. Very intimidating, but a good shot slightly on the right of the pin will take you safely home. Hole 4: A drive then a dilemma: do you go for the green - Glory or Misery - or do you lag your second shot on to the intermediary plateau? Then, to go to the green, you will pass across a lovely rustic bridge and discover the glorious waterfall cascading over natural marble stone.

Designed by Gary Player, El Paraiso was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary!
Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer! Hole 6. Par 5. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer -
but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Azahara Muñoz has been using the new Atalaya Golf 3,500 m2 short game area designed by Craig Cook - former design assistant of Robert Trent Jones - and roofed tee at the driving range. This area has just been opened for professionals and their pupils. Azahara has trained at Atalaya for over 11 years with her personal golf coach Fernando Vega Cabeza (Professional of the Atalaya Golf Academy).

It would be fair to say that, in general, hazards are obvious but still manage to trap the unwary. Care is needed off the tees and the wild hitter will soon encounter difficulties. for the holiday golfer. Atalaya Golf & Country Club International also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens. There are plenty of scoring opportunities on the New Course, with a solid mix of holes and lengths. Two of the best par 3’s you will come across on any golf course are the 4th - teeing off with a mid-iron from a raised platform over the lake - and the 13th, a long iron or wood to a two tiered green with a steep bank on the left. Par on either of these exceptional holes is a good score. The long par 5 finishing hole will either make or break your score.

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis. The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile. The opening hole sits alongside the 9th, 10th & 18th, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. Designed by Enrique Canales
Busquets, the course has been created with respect for the natural environment, indigenous wildlife and vegetation. Santa Clara Golf Marbella provides a stimulating and unforgettable round for golfers of all abilities. The par 3’s are perhaps where it is most difficult to hold a good score together, with hazards to contend with wide of the target. The 13th measures 139 metres from the ladies tee, 182m from the men’s, and a massive 208m from the pros. Forming part of the course affectionately known as ‘Santa Clara Corner’, (holes 12, 13 & 14) - what also makes this hole so daunting is the lake which protects the front of the green.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones in the late 80’s, this well established Championship 18hole course is 5,867 metres long with a par of 72. Marbella Golf has an imaginative and impressive layout and the course challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Surrounded by lush green hills and olive trees, Marbella Golf is unique, beautiflly complimenting the natural environment, it encompasses one of the largest green areas left on the Coast. Each hole is unique in character and afford views of the azure Meditterranean Sea. The numerous bunkers and lakes have to be successfully negotiated if one is to achieve a
good score. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes. The 11th requires particular care, with a sharp dogleg right amidst valleys and hills. El Olivo Restaurant El Olivo is remarkable in form and content alike. Recently renovated, its elegant design reflects an understanding of eating according to which it’s not just what you have in your plate but a full experience that begins with the setting. Miraflores Golf follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements. Measuring 5,148 metres from the yellow tees, each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge - on the fifth and sixth, for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The twelfth is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake - and there’s even more water danger on the fifteenth, where a moat completely surrounds the green.Members and visitors are always warmly welcomed.
This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game - from practising at the Golf Academy and playing in well organised tournaments to socialising in the Clubhouse. Miraflores Golf Restaurant: In the heart of the Course, diners enjoy spectacular views from the terrace. Renowned for the quality of its food, it is a must place to visit. Open 365 days a year to members and non-members, serving lunch and dinner. The delicious lunch menu is good value and our gourmet dinner and selection of wines is excellent. An ideal place for an intimate dinner, or for entertaining friends or colleagues.

This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol within the “Golf Valley of Mijas”, only 15 mins from Fuengirola & 25 mins from Marbella. The course has been designed by Aymerich Golf Management to reflect the natural geography of the land and offer some degree of risk which players of all handicaps will enjoy. With spectacular sea and the mountain views from most of the holes, the greens have an average surface area of over 500 m2 and are exceptionaly designed to provide a great experience for all players. Fairways are varied from one hole to another, wide in the landing areas with visible hazards. Rasied
tees give a perfect view of the hole and a more spectacular ball flight. Weekend golfers take note – there are no torturous holes, the sort that make you want to call it a day and head straight to the club house for a drink! Hole 6, Par 3. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and will remain in the memory bank for many a day.

to the greens. Campo America requires accurate and well-judged shot-making on the approach as nearly three quarters of the greens are perched or slightly elevated.
Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort. The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level.

The four par fives, with the exception of the 1st, are reachable in two. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 2nd: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 14th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 18th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf on offer, La Cala also has Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Practice facilities include a testing 6-hole par three course, a SAM Putting Lab, a grass driving range and putting and chipping greens.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

Set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland that was formerly an avocado plantation, Santana Golf has been sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson. The result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Wide and well manicured putting greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers with crushed marble sand. Technically speaking, Santana Golf is a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge,
even for the more experienced player. It is clear that Cabell B. Robinson has opened a jar of exquisite essences, designing a spectacular & aesthetically superb layout. 4th. Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. A true test for a championship golfer. 10th. The second 9 opens with a Par 5 with a generously fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

El Chaparral Golf Club has become one of the most attractive golf clubs on the Costa del Sol, the result of the determination and efforts of Antonio Rubio’s family business. With a premium service from the moment you arrive: a wooden roof covers 90% of the car park, immediate welcome service, collection of golf bags, specialised staff, impeccably decorated changing rooms. With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging
course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, golf course architect par excellence and world renowned for his work that spreads from the Mediterrranean to the Pacific.
Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and is one of the longest on the coast. It is characterised by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers; lakes feature prominently on eight of the holes. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.
Trent Jones believed that “every hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey”. Mijas Golf International lives up to that belief, maintaining the sanctity of par with Trent Jones’ hallmarks of strategically placed water and sand, yet offering the high handicapper generous but gently undulating fairways and a general impression of wide open space. This is a very popular golfing complex with two superb courses.
No hole so characterises this course as much the 5th - some 617 yards (564 metres), curving seeming endlessly around a boundary wall and over a full 100 yards (91,44 metres) of fairway bunker, it approaches the green through a narrowing funnel with out of bounds left and large lake to the right.

The main feature which distinguishes this course from the other is the abundance of trees – hence the name – and its smaller size, as well as fewer water hazards. The greens are smaller, undulating and well defended. The Club House is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and
beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world. Signature Holes: The 2nd is a long par 4 for high handicappers. Perhaps best to play as a par 5, watch that bunker on the right. It is a long second shot to the green. Keep to the right. The 8th might be the most difficult par 3 on the course but the par three 14th. is not too far behind. All the problems here are on the left side of the green. Safe shot is short or to the right of the green.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella.
Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Lauro Golf is a course moderately flat that can be played without buggy. The designers intended that every shot was a challenge for the player, who must keep the concentration all the time and choose the right club. Some holes change their difficulty depending on the direction of the two main winds of the area, Levante and Poniente. Designed by Folco Nardi and inaugurated in 1992, course and nature bond happily together. Partly in a protected, construction-free area, Lauro commands superb views over the sea and mountains. Combining technique and strategy, this is recognized as one of the best
courses along the coast. The addition of a further 9 holes in 2003 provided an overall layout which becomes increasingly spectacular as the (literally) thousands of trees mature. 13: Par 5. “Joselito”. Possibly the most difficult hole with out of bounds at both sides, a lake at the entrance of a small green and a bunker behind. 26: Par 3. “Tragabuches”. Less difficult than it seems. The fear of the gully makes many players hit the ball too far to the right. 27: Par 5. “Niños de Écija”. The nicest hole and with the best views of Lauro Golf, protected by water on the right at the start and on the left at the entrance of the green.

famous members, Miguel Angel Jimenz. Visitors playing times are limited to mornings only - nor do visitors have full access to the whole of the club’s services. Don’t miss the view from the restaurant terrace - spectacular.
Apart from the usual club house facilities there are two swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, basket ball and even a football pitch, although most of these facilities are only available to club members.
The first nine holes are in a typical English “parkland” style, only two of the holes, the second and fifth are slightly elevated. All the greens however are quite large and fast. There has been quite a bit of earth moving to create a more rugged second nine holes, with the 10th, 11th and 14th to 17th holes being heavily influenced by surrounding lakes and the Guadalhorce river.

Baviera Golf has been designed by José María Cañizares, the prestigious professional golfer. Cañizares is one of our most international and charismatic golfers in whose record are 5 tournaments of the European circuit and 2 world championships as well as several participations in the Ryder Cup. Baviera Golf is an even course characterized by its wide greens with many movements and the great variety of obstacles which offer a big range of strokes and an ideal design for all types of handicap. The variety of holes and the unsurpassable
views both to the Mediterranean sea and the mountains contribute to make you enjoy and share an unforgettable day. Signature Holes If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.

From it’s inauguration in August 2006, the spectacular 18 hole TPC course at Santa Clara Golf in Granada has developed into one of the best in the Granada region. Designed by D. Enrique Canales and located in Otura, less than 10 minutes from Granada City centre, the course nestles in the foothills of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountain range. Created with great respect for the natural environment, the course is one of the longest in Andalucia and will challenge players of all standards. The front 9 with its bunkers, “barrancos” and ‘the hill’ is very different from the back 9 which has some long
undulating fairways, a lake and a few well placed trees to contend with - altogether making for an interesting and at times, intriguing game of golf. Try for a birdie on the par 4 6th hole. You never know your luck! Santa Clara boasts a magnificent Clubhouse with a restaurant overlooking the back 9, offering wonderful views of the snow capped mountains from it’s terrace. Here you can get a wide variety of dishes from the excellent menu. There is also a spacious SPA area with Jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish baths, thermal showers and a covered 15 meter long pool. An 80 m2 gym contains the most modern sports equipment.

History, Art & Culture
The province of Cadiz is the southernmost of the Iberian Peninsula . It has a perimeter of 586 Km, 260 of which are coastline. It has a surface area of 7,385 Km, divided up into 44 municipal areas. Its population totals just over one million, with the density being just over the national average.
The province played an important role in the discovery and colonization of America during the 15th century. Christopher Columbus and other famous sailors set sail from these ports on their voyages to the New Continent. The 18th century, Cadiz’s “Golden Century” was dominated by the growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character and introducing new liberal ideas and opening the door for democracy which came to fruition with the drafting of the constitution in 1812. The province of Cadiz is an exceptional and unique area, whose qualities will delight those people seeking tourism that reflects true cultural, festive and ecological values, together with the authentic and essentially Andalusian customs and monuments.
Cadiz has an ancient history. The Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than three thousand years ago. It was here that they built the old ”Gadir” (Cadiz ) around 1,100 B.C., making it the oldest capital in the West. The Romans and the Visigoths also left their marks here. After 711, it was ruled by the Muslims until Alfonso X “The Wise” reconquered it in the middle of the 13th century and it became part of the Kingdom of Castilla.
Many cultures have left their mark throughout Cadiz ‘s long history. Examples of this are the “Tajo de las Figuras” cave paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz ‘s Museum; the Roman remains of “Baelo Claudia” at Tarifa, and the “Carteia” at San Roque. The province has over 30 castles and fortresses, many of which are in a good state of repair. In the field of religious art, the province also boasts an extraordinary collection of monuments. Good examples of this are the Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz and Jerez. As far as paintings are concerned, examples of works by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many of the province’s churches and museums.

From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
The Montenmedio golf course (6.260 meters, 18 holes and par 72) is different from all other Spanish courses. Not a single building affects its fairways and greens. It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic
Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services. Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
