Welcome to The Midlands Golf Guide Welcome to our first edition of the Midlands Golf Guide; a must read for all golfers. The Midlands Golf Guide is brought to you by Golf Guide Digital Media limited. The Golf Guide is a leading golf and lifestyle publication distributed across many parts of UK, Spain and Ireland. We provide our readers with a unique combination of a complimentary top quality printed lifestyle magazine and leading edge digital media products. In addition to this publication, magazines are also published in North West & Cumbria, North Wales, the South Central Region of the UK, Ireland and Spain – with plans to extend into new areas over the next 12 months including a South Midlands and Cotswolds Golf Guide. To this degree, we are unique in our approach; an international company with a regional strategy and approach. This magazine is split into 4 areas. Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. At the start of each area, you will find a map highlighting where each feature course can be found. At the end of each section you will find a comprehensive list of all the golf courses in that region. The Golf Guide magazine provides an opportunity for golf clubs and complimentary sponsors to showcase their course, products and services in a high quality lifestyle magazine. The magazine showcases the courses by using superb photography and providing enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or party planning a visit to the area. Each Golf course page provides images and details about the course, full contact details and any special offers, some of which are exclusive to the Golf Guide. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels ranging from Professionals to your casual society golfers. We hope you will find this free
publication an enjoyable read and a valuable source of information when planning your golfing trips in the region. Our magazine’s aim is simple “you’ll be lost without it” As a publisher, we promote our clients in many ways. One of the ways we do this is by hosting professional standard amateur events across our regions. The Golf Guide tour has been re-designed and elevated to a whole new level for 2015 and is now “The Race to Mauritius” in conjunction with our brand new travel partner, Chaka Travel. In addition to all the superb prizes you can win at each event courtesy of our Sponsors Callaway, Druh Belts and ETIQUS watches, we have devised an order of merit competition whereby one lucky pair will qualify for the World pairs final in Mauritius. The individual tour events are a stableford pair’s competition with each winning pair on the day qualifying for our European final in either November 2015 or February 2016 in Costa del Sol, including flights, accommodation and 3 rounds of competitive golf at top quality Spanish courses. More information can be found in the magazine about our events. As a business, our products and services continue to develop at a rapid rate. Late last year, we launched our new digital platform that provides a content rich, interactive web platform that will complement the magazine and allow readers to access our magazine from anywhere in the world and book their visits on-line via the Golf Guide. From now on, whether you are reading this in printed format or online, the best golf directory in the UK is never far away. We hope you enjoy our first ever Midlands Golf Guide and would love to hear your feedback on what you think of our products. Enjoy the summer golf season and we hope to see you soon at one of our tour events.

The ‘Hole In One Club’ is launching a new membership in 2015 aimed at all amateur golfers who regularly take part in club competitions throughout the golfing season. In previous years when scoring an ace, amateurs would receive adulation from their playing partners and then have to buy a round of drinks. But now the ‘HIO Club’ is buying UK amateur golfers the trip of a lifetime.
The lucky final 12 will receive this amazing package... • International return flights from the UK to Jacksonville, Florida • Practice day plus 3 days of competition at TPC Sawgrass • Amazing Hole in One Prizes on offer and fantastic prize table • 7 night’s accommodation with breakfast and evening dinner included at the amazing Sawgrass Marriott Resort • Welcome Golfers Gift Pack • Prize giving Gala Dinner
A maximum field of 12 golfers will be taken on an all-expense paid trip of a lifetime to TPC Sawgrass, Florida, USA, to compete in the Grand Final for fabulous prizes. Regional Finals will be applicable if more than 12 Hole In Ones are scored. Amateur golfers have the whole 2015 competitive season to score that elusive shot from April 1st to September 30th whilst playing in official club competitions including Open events, PGA Pro Am’s and our very own Golf Guide Tour Events. Membership costs just £5 per season which is the equivalent of 83p per month for the opportunity to win this fantastic trip of a lifetime. At all stages the successful golfers scoring a Hole In One will be featured on the HIO website, with updates, blogs and stories being widely publicised through extensive social media campaign. To get involved, amateur golfers should register at www.hio-club.com... and prepare themselves for the excitement that lies ahead.

FEATURED COURSE
Trentham Park Golf Club
TPGC is an 18-hole par 71 course, measuring 6390 yards from the back tees and the home course of former Ryder Cup player David Gilford, who along with Ronan Rafferty, jointly held the course record until June 2006. There’s tough and long par-4’s mixed in with short but tricky one’s. There’s downhill challenging par-3’s to the short 100-yard flick at the 3rd which is surrounded by bunkers. And then there’s three par-5’s which all have their own identity but provide decent scoring opportunities. You open with one of those par-5’s and also one of the best tee shots of the day on the 1st with a lake and waterfall needing to be avoided to get your round off to a good start. If you find the fairway then you should be on for a good start as it’s relatively straight to the green. Avoid the two greenside bunkers and move on confidently to the 2nd tee. Two good par-4’s follow with the sloping fairway at the 2nd hole its biggest defense. Everything bounces towards the out of bounds so aim your tee shot to the left hand side and let the slope and bounce take over. The first par-3 of the course is the short wedge flick I spoke of earlier. At 104yards, the green
is surrounded by seven bunkers. It also plays slightly uphill so actually judging your short iron will be a bit more difficult. The green itself is only 21 feet deep and pretty narrow so even for a short hole it’s not as easy as it looks on paper.
anyway as this is one of the toughest greens on the course that slopes heavily from left to right. The front of the par-3 7th green isn’t visible from the tee as two bunkers cover what is a swale short of the green. This means you must fly your tee shot all the way to avoid a tricky chip shot for your second. Two relatively straight par-4’s complete the outward nine. The tee shot on the 9th must be taken over a lake that is near the tees and shouldn’t come into play but the fairway bunker is well placed and a left to right shot must be hit to find the fairway. Two bunkers – short right and left protect the green but you also don’t want to go long as a lot of trees and wasteland wait.
The 6th is a par-4 that plays shorter than its yardage. Avoiding the fairway bunker on the right about 230yards from the tee and you’ll be left with an approach into a green protected by four bunkers, not that it needs over protecting
Back-nine Just like the front-nine the back opens with a par-5. Off the tee it looks like a dog-leg but longer hitters can cut the corner and take it over the left bunker to give a shot at the
FEATURED COURSE
green. If not play it safe and play as a genuine three-shotter. The last par-5 on the course will come quickly on the 12th and although it plays about 20yards longer than the 10th it’s more of a scoring opportunity. From the fairway the green is hidden away but it’s all downhill. Aim at the big fir tree behind the green and you’ll have a good line. There are three bunkers protecting the green though so you’ll need to get a bit lucky. There’s out of bounds all the way from tee to green. The 13th is when you start to head into the woodlands and also the start of a brilliant stretch of holes. You start with a par-3 which has a great back-drop and a very narrow target so you need to be accurate to come away with a par. Moving through the woodlands and onto the 14th tee, you’re faced with another semiblind tee shot. This is the hardest hole on the
The Midlands Golf Guide
course and that’s because you have trouble everywhere - Out of bounds all the way down the right, a creek that crosses the fairway and will catch the longer hitters out and then an uphill approach to a small green guarded by three bunkers - A really great hole. The 15th is a par-3 over a huge drop where to creek contains to flow from the 14th. Take enough club to clear the large bunker in front of the green. The green itself slopes back-to-front. You face one of the best approach shots on the course at the 16th if you get your drive far enough down. The par-4 dog-legs at around 260yards with the green tucked away in the corner of the woodlands, surrounded by huge trees and bunkers either side. It’s an intimidating shot into a small green so take enough club to get it to the hole on what is an undulating green. The penultimate hole has you avoiding trouble from the off. This long par-4 stands at 437yards

TPGC Junior Academy Itinerary
Trentham Park Golf Club Junior Academy Golf is a great sport to teach kids about teamwork, sportsmanship, rules, etiquette and above all, how to have fun with friends. Trentham Park has a fine history of developing Junior golfers and many of today’s members started their golfing life at TPGC as Juniors, enjoying the competition and comradery that a thriving junior section brings. In addition to the Juniors who have stayed as member and played golf for enjoyment, TPGC’s Juniors have a glorious heritage in Professional and high level Amateur golf too. Ernest Millward and Geoffrey Marks both began their golfing lives here at TPGC, eventually representing GB & Ireland in the Walker Cup. Geoffrey Mills won the Midland Amateur Championship & Staffordshire Championship whilst he was a member of TPGC. More recently, 6 time European Tour winner, Ryder Cup player, World Cup Winner, Walker Cup player and English Amateur Champion, David Gilford played here as a Junior and continues to do so as he prepares to return to
and will take two good hits to get there in two. A large tree sits in the middle of the fairway and well placed hazards either side are waiting for the longer hitters. The bunkers sit just on the corner of the dog-leg with the hole turning slightly left. A 4 here would be a very good score. A final good drive will leave around 140/150yards into a green protected by three bunkers and with out of bounds and water to the right. The fairway slopes from left-to-right so allow for the bounce, but don’t go too far right otherwise your approach shot will be blocked off by the overhanging trees.
professional golf on the European Seniors Tour. Simon Wakefield also began his golfing journey as a Junior member of TPGC, representing the club in Junior team matches, 1st & 2nd team matches before moving onto bigger county and national events and ultimately playing on the European Tour for several seasons. Sarah Gallagher has ensured that the Junior plaudits are not restricted to the boys, playing for the Junior teams herself before going onto win the Ladies English Amateur Strokeplay Championship.

The Golf Guide Ladies Division
Golf continues to change and develop in terms of attracting new people to the game and building a sustainable future. Whilst dealing with over 400 clubs across our network, we have seen a number of different approaches to growing the ladies game at all levels. To ensure we continue to offer a proactive service to all our clients and consumers, we have launched the Golf Guide Ladies Division, led by Charlotte Wild. The purpose of our new ladies division is to promote clubs who are actively encouraging ladies to join the game, highlighting the best offers around and delivering a number of high value events, that aim to promote and develop ladies golf across the UK. Charlotte discusses her plans in more detail: “Having played as a pro on the LET Access Tour for the last two years, I have travelled to many different countries and golf clubs, often playing in Pro-ams as part of my tournament preparation. One surprising observation is there doesn’t tend to be many women playing in the events. If I am drawn to play with a team of ladies I am almost surprised!
I started to think about the opportunity ladies get to play outside of their home club or club matches. Working with The Golf Guide on their Golf Guide Tour made me think about setting up a version just for Women. An opportunity to play a selection of events around the UK, meeting fellow golfers, playing on great courses and most importantly having fun! During the next few months, we will be launching a series products aimed at pro-actively promoting all that is good about ladies golf. Later in 2015, I will deliver a series of pairs events for all standards of golfer. The fundamental concept of the days is to hold competitive events in the right spirit, held at great golf courses with a chance to meet new friends. At every event, I will be delivering a golf clinic on the course, setting different challenges and providing hints and tips. There will be fabulous prizes at each venue for the winners at each event. My aim is to make golf more accessible to

women of all standards in a fun and competitive environment, at an affordable price, whilst offering my knowledge and experience in order to help you learn a little from the day! Derbyshire’s ‘Augusta’ is 90 Cavendish Golf Course, Buxton, in the heart of the beautiful Peak District, has a special summer ahead which started with the first major of the year.
NEWS & FEATURES
The Midlands Golf Guide
Created by Dr. Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1925, Cavendish is one of over 100 golf courses around the world that he helped to design. His early work was in West Yorkshire and the Midlands, but he went on to earn an international reputation for his designs on courses such as The Augusta National, Cypress Point in USA, Royal Melbourne in Australia. In 1923 the Duke of Devonshire requested MacKenzie to design an 18 hole golf course in Buxton and the link with the Cavendish family has remained to date. The course has retained virtually all of the features present in MacKenzie’s original design, making full use of the natural features and providing a true test for golfers at all levels of ability. Cavendish exemplifies MacKenzie’s belief that ‘length has nothing to do with the quality of a hole’. Low handicap golfers will agree with the widely held view that the 10th & 11th holes are the finest back-to-back par fours on any Mackenzie course in Britain. Cavendish celebrated its 90th anniversary on 8th April 2015, the day before the start of the US Masters played on a course designed by the same golf architect. The club organised a Special Anniversary Event on 8th April and started a brand new Cavendish Anniversary Trophy members competition. The picture left is of present Captain, Tony King, holding the impressive new trophy. Competitors played the course to the original 1925 layout and members were encouraged to dress in 1920’s fashions, with prizes for the most authentically dressed gentleman and lady and also a special prize for the best nine holes played with hickory shafted clubs!
The picture above shows one of our members and Millennium Captain, Richard Atherton (left), dressed in 1920’s style. Richard is a committee member of the MacKenzie Society of Great Britain and Ireland and is well placed to advise on golfing and MacKenzie history. Eddie Birchenough was one of the guests of honour who knows most of the tour professionals who played at the US Masters. Eddie is from Buxton and was a caddy at the club, before going on to be a professional and ending up for 27 years as head professional at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. Cavendish may be getting nostalgic and celebrating their special year in true period style but they are also bringing in the new as well. The fastest growing sport in the world is coming to Buxton as the club is to be the first in Derbyshire to offer FootGolf to its members and visitors. The 1,008 yards Par 37 course will appeal to both beginners and elite players looking to rack up National Ranking Event points. Golf Express Launches in Staffordshire Golf Express – a campaign to encourage busy people to play all the game in half the time – has been launched in Staffordshire.
This campaign, which has been welcomed by Ryder cup hero Justin Rose, recognises the pace of modern life and offers 9-hole formats that most golfers can conveniently fit into a busy schedule. Golf Express has been backed by 19 clubs across the county, offering 9-hole green fees and a loyalty card to encourage golfers to play more often: if they play five rounds, they get the sixth free. Twelve of the clubs are also offering golfers the opportunity to play in weekly, after-work roll-ups. These are open to non-members, a handicap is not essential and players will be paired up with other golfers for the fun competitions. England’s Justin Rose – the world number six – described Golf Express as: “A great way to play all the game in half the time.” Golf Express is part of an England Golf project which is trialling innovative ways of increasing golf club membership and participation in the sport. It recognises that most people’s leisure
time is reducing and for many it can be as little as two hours a day. Research from Syngenta, the golf course turfcare specialist, shows that 31% of golfers are leaving the game because it takes too long to play and a 9-hole option would encourage then to play more often. David Joy, the Chief Executive of England Golf, commented: “We hope this new initiative will encourage more people to play more often because it makes golf more attractive and convenient for today’s lifestyles”. The clubs involved in Golf Express are: Bloxwich, Branston, Calderfields, Darnford Moor, Dartmouth, Druids Heath, Izaak Walton, Lakeside, Lichfield, Mark Butler Golf Academy, Newcastle, Onneley, Oxley Park, Stafford Castle, Stone, The Chase, Trentham Park, 3 Hammers and Uttoxeter To find out more visit getintogolf.org/ golfexpress or call 0800 118 2766 #golfexpress

Derbyshire Introduction
Derbyshire
©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth
Derbyshire is renowned for being a hugely diverse county with town and city nestled in breathtaking countryside with industry and leisure working hand in hand. The county’s premier city is Derby, which although steeped in history, is one of Britain’s youngest cities, being awarded its Charter by Her Majesty the Queen in 1977. Derby has many unique characteristics with a rich mixture of arts, tourism and cultural venues and a pedestrianised city centre, which makes shopping a joy. There are several towns in the county with Derby being the largest and most populous. Derbyshire can also claim the first national park to

be set up in Britain - the Peak National Park which lies at the southern end of the Pennines, between Sheffield and Manchester, it’s boundaries also spread into several other counties. The park covers over 500 square miles, three quarters of which lie within Derbyshire itself. Dame Ellen MacArthur, one of Derby’s most famous people from recent times, held the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a yacht! Heading out of the city there is a choice of bustling market towns such as Ashbourne, Bakewell and Chesterfield; and many picturesque villages nestled in unspoilt countryside such as Buxton. Situated in the

heart of the Peak District, this beautiful Georgian Spa town boasts the highest market place in the country. In the hilly districts the land is mostly in pasture; much of it is rocky and unproductive. Oats, barley, potatoes, and wheat are cultivated; and there are many excellent dairy-farms. Warm mineral springs are numerous, the most popular being those at Buxton, Matlock, and Bakewell. Coal is abundant; iron ore and lead are worked; among the other mineral products are zinc, manganese, and barytes. Derbyshire offers a variety of scenery, a wide array of interesting places to visit and things to do, whatever the time of year.

BREADSALL PRIORY
32
Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel & Country Club Standing in over 400 acres of parkland, near the Peak District National Park, Breadsall Priory, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club offers contrasting 36 holes of golf in beautiful surroundings. The two courses, the Priory and the Moorland, are both popular with members and visitors, not least because they offer a combination of exciting golf coupled with superb views over the surrounding countryside. The Priory, the eldest of the two, was designed by David Cox and opened for play in 1977. It measures 6,054 yards from the medal tees, which is relatively short by modern standards, but don’t let that mislead you because it is also
tight and tree-lined and offers a real test to all but the most accurate strikers. Cox’s lay-out has numerous fine holes, not the least of which are the panoramic 363 yard par 4 11th and the demanding 424 yard par 4 16th. However, the pick of the bunch might well be the delightful 183 yard par 3 17th, which is played from an elevated tee to a generous green guarded by bunkers and a ditch to the rear.
Set on an adjacent hillside, it is ideal for year-round golf; the newer Moorland Course measures a manageable 6,100 yards and affords fine views of the hotel and the surrounding area. BAKEWELL
The Club is on Station Road which is off the A619 just to the North of Bakewell Town centre. If following the A619 from out of the town Station Road is the first turning to the right after crossing the river Wye. After climbing up the hill for 400 yards Station Road forks immediately after Burre Close; take the right fork and the Clubhouse is 200 yards further up on the left. Coming from the North on the A619 from the direction of Chatsworth follow the signs for Town Centre Parking turning left onto Station Road at the memorial on the corner and follow Station Road as above. Overlooking both the Town and the River Wye, Bakewell Golf Club welcomes visitors to enjoy its glorious views over the Derbyshire hills, Wye Valley and surrounding countryside. Bakewell is a 9 Hole/18 Tee course with each tee providing either a different length or aspect. The course itself is a highly natural lay out on an undulating hillside just a short distance to the east of the town. Though not long (Men 5244 yds, par 68, SSS 66; Ladies 4681, par 69, SSS 68 ) the course presents a variety of challenges to all standards of golfer with a wide range
of shot making required. Small greens with varying borrows add to the challenge and achievement of playing well. Besides its reputation as a “hidden gem” of a course, you can also enjoy our superb and renowned catering in or outside the small, friendly Clubhouse overlooking the 9th Hole. The market town of Bakewell is only a short distance away (0.7 miles) and at the heart of the Peak District’s reputation for tourism with both the historic Chatsworth and Haddon Hall Estates a short drive away.

One of the finest golf courses in Derbyshire. Created by Dr. Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1925, Cavendish is one of over 100 golf courses around the world that he helped to design. Particularly notable among these are The Augusta National and Cypress Point in USA, Royal Melbourne in Australia and of course, Cavendish, here in Buxton. In 1923 the Duke of Devonshire requested MacKenzie to design an 18 hole golf course in Buxton and the link with the Cavendish family has remained to date. The course has retained virtually all of the features present in MacKenzie’s original design, making full use of the natural features and providing a true test
Cavendish Golf Club Buxton
for golfers at all levels of ability. Not long by modern standards, it requires accurate play to the demanding greens, which have left many visitors longing for a return to our exciting course. Cavendish exemplifies MacKenzie’s belief that “length has nothing to do with the quality of a hole”. The abundance of wildlife such as buzzard, sparrow hawk, kestrel, deer and hares can be a distraction even to the most focused player, but we believe that it adds to the experience of playing in this quiet, private area of Buxton. Cavendish is thought by some to be Dr MacKenzie’s most accomplished work in the UK and quite possibly the best layout in the world under 6000 yards.
‘Celebrating 90 years’
Cavendish is recognised as one of the finest golf courses in Derbyshire offering a great golfing experience.

Nottinghamshire Introduction
Nottinghamshire ©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth
As good at archery as he is at pulling in the tourists, Robin Hood is probably the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Nottingham. The story of Robin, Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men is one of the most famous medieval tales and has been the subject of TV and film adaptations. Nottinghamshire, which is situated in the heart of England, is famous for lace-making, bicycle (notably Raleigh bikes) and tobacco industries as well as Sherwood Forest - stretching over 30 miles from Nottingham to Worksop. From the sleepy market towns and golden fields of the countryside, to the shops and clubs of the cosmopolitan Nottingham city, this is a county of contrasts and surprises.
©VisitBritain / Grant Pritchard
This county has plenty of gardens, but many of its most interesting ones are well hidden accessible only at particular times of the year, or only known to horticultural specialists. Nottinghamshire is sheltered by the Pennines to the west, so receives relatively low rainfall. Famous names connected to the county of Nottinghamshire include D H Lawrence, Robin Hood, Lord Byron, Paul Smith and Jake Bugg. Nottingham is also host to the oldest football club - Notts County. There is so much to do in this lively fun packed county - see world class sport, amazing live performances, excellent nightlife and cutting edge art in some outstanding venues - what are you waiting for?

Formally established in 1901, Newark Golf Club moved to its current location four miles from the centre of Newark in 1934. The Club and course have been continually developed and improved over this time to keep pace with the requirements of the modern golf club member. The natural easy walking topography coupled with course design improvements create a challenging but fair test for golfers of all levels of ability. The combination of woodland and heathland aspects make the focus on accuracy rather than distance, although there are occasions where both are required, for example the 4th and 16th holes. There also is every opportunity to improve skill levels as Newark
has superb practice and coaching facilities, both indoor and out. A range of group packages are available and visitors are welcome to tailor these to meet their own personal requirements. Selected as the County course for 2015 Newark Golf Club will be hosting the county championships and county opens for the top amateurs and Professionals throughout Nottinghamshire. The large Clubhouse with the Club’s in house team can cater for the most refined to the biggest function, be it private celebrations or corporate events. The Club’s website has a wealth of information on the many excellent facilities and services available.

Notts. Golf Club (Hollinwell) is one of England’s best kept secrets. Golfers who find their way to Hollinwell know they have arrived at a special place from the moment they turn the final bend on the long driveway to the Club and see a magnificent view of the course and imposing clubhouse ahead of them.
Ranked in ‘The Top 100 Courses of the World’. Notts. Golf Club (Hollinwell) continues to feature highly in all accredited golf course rankings. In 2014 the 13th, a 241 yard par three, was included in Golf Worlds 100 Classic Golf Holes across the United Kingdom and Continental Europe.
Set in the gently rolling hills of North Nottinghamshire in the heart of Robin Hood County, Notts. (Hollinwell) offers one of the finest examples of traditional heathland golf in Great Britain. Only 10 minutes from junction 27 of the M1.
Fine Golf rates Notts. as giving a four star “joy to be alive” feeling. Brian Waites, the successful tournament pro and Ryder Cup player, was also the Club’s professional for many years.
The Club has hosted many top professional & amateur events throughout its long history Dunlop Masters, John Player Classic, Brabazon Trophy and more recently hosted the prestigious British Boys Championship in 2012. Notts. Golf Club will again host the Brabazon Trophy in 2015, the 5th time in the Club’s history.
The members at Notts. (Hollinwell) are very proud of their club, one of the great tests of golf, and we extend a warm welcome to visitors from near and far. Come and view Robin Hood’s seat behind the second green, take a drink from the well by the eighth tee that gives the course its name and soak up the atmosphere that only comes with a course of great stature and a wonderful history.

The 6368 yard, par 70 golf course is set in over 200 acres of beautiful parkland and woodland, within the old Rufford Abbey Deer Park. During your round you will be spoilt by the spectacular views of the Rufford Lakes and Abbey within the famous Sherwood Forest. Opened in July 1994, Rufford has had extensive direction from former Ryder Cup player Ken Brown. The course has been carefully designed to compliment the naturally undulating parkland landscape.
50% off room hire for all weddings
A fantastic all weather course having the benefit of being constructed on a free draining sandy base provides quality playing surfaces throughout the year. The course is challenging for all levels of player, from novice to professional. In particular, the 17th is perhaps the most memorable of the many feature holes, requiring a daunting downhill tee shot over a meandering river.

The facilities both on and off the course make The Nottinghamshire the ideal venue whether you are a group of friends looking for an enjoyable round of golf, a local business looking to entertain clients or a corporate customer wanting to organise a showcase event for their clients. In the Summer months enjoy the summer sun with the spacious patio just yards away from the 1st tee and 18th green of the Open Course, a great place to relax after your round. The comfortable surroundings of our recently refurbished Clubhouse complex are perfect for enjoying the stunning views from the Lakeview Restaurant whilst enjoying a bite to eat. The Open Course comprises a front nine, set around an impressive lake and waterways complex with the back nine offering a different challenge with mature trees strategically placed to make it a true parkland course. We have made significant changes to 12 of the 18 holes introducing new tees, more strategically placed trees and water features to enhance your golfing experience with an island drop hole on the par 3 14th hole - The Open Course is now known throughout the Midlands as a true test of golf. The Masters Course was extended from a 9-hole to an 18-hole course, with the new nine designed by Peter Alliss. The front nine has recently undergone some major renovation
and remodelling, and combines hedgerows and undulating fairways with large greens and water features. The 16th hole on the Masters Course is perhaps The Nottinghamshire’s signature hole, a 136 yard par 3 over water to a wide but shallow green, with an approach that rolls back to the water. The substantial lake in this area of the course is sensitively managed to enhance both aquatic and bird life, and is also the home of the 11th tee, which is on a peninsula in the middle of the lake. We highly recommend a viewing of our courses and venue with a member of our friendly and highly experience golf team. The team can show you around the courses and discuss your individual requirements for your golf day, tailoring a package to suit your needs and budget. Shropshire Introduction
Shropshire ©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth
Shropshire is a county in the West Midlands of England. It borders Powys and Wrexham in Wales to the west and north-west, Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the south-east and Herefordshire to the south. Shropshire is one of England’s most rural and sparsely populated counties, with a population density of 136/km2. The county flower is the round-leaved sundew. Shropshire, may be one of England’s quiet counties but don’t be deceived; there’s still plenty to see and do. Shropshire has over 90 places to visit - historic houses and

beautiful gardens, the famous Ironbridge, museums and family attractions. It also has a long history of wild border conflicts which have left a legacy of atmospheric hillforts, earthworks and castles. Shropshire has many traditional market towns including gourmet Ludlow and the county town of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury almost surrounded by the River Severn and birthplace of Charles Darwin, is a medieval delight of black and white buildings. If food is your thing then Ludlow won’t disappoint; as Shropshire’s gastronomic capital the restaurants with Michelin Star

are supported by the numerous delis, restaurants, cafes and food markets, all serving quality local food and not forgetting the famous Ludlow Food Festival. The Shropshire landscape reflects the fact that Shropshire is geologically unique and creates the special habitats that ensures that Shropshire wildlife is so diverse. All this adds up to making Shropshire great walking country. So whether you’re out and about on Shropshire Hills, by the Meres and Mosses or strolling along with the Shropshire Union and Llangollen Canals you can guarantee the Shropshire air will rejuvenate and restore you.

Staffordshire Introduction
Staffordshire ©VisitBritain / Adrian Houston
Staffordshire, abbreviated Staffs, is a landlocked county in the West Midlands of England. It adjoins Cheshire to the north west, Derbyshire and Leicestershire to the east, Warwickshire to the south east, West Midlands and Worcestershire to the south and Shropshire to the west. Staffordshire is famous for its potteries, its inland navigations, and its founderies, blast furnaces, slitting mills, and various other branches of the iron trade. The mines of coals, copper, lead, and iron ore are rich and extensive; and there are also numerous quarries of stone, alabaster, and limestone.
Staffordshire is also host to many other attractions including Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Trentham Gardens and the National Brewery Centre - Staffordshire has the only beer that is still traditionally crafted in oak casks by the last remaining brewer in town, on the fringes of England’s National Forest. And lets not forget the world famous Oak Cakes that originate from this county Staffordshire is home to the highest village in Britain, Flash. The village, in the Staffordshire Moorlands, stands at 463 m (1518 ft) above sea level.

The football club Stoke City is one of the oldest professional football clubs in existence, and was founded in 1863 and played at the Victoria Ground for 119 years from 1878 until their relocation to the Britannia Stadium in 1997. They were among the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. From the celebrated cities of Stoke-on-Trent and Lichfield to the peace and tranquillity of Cannock Chase, whether you’re hiking in the peaks, beer tasting in Burton or ghost hunting in Tamworth, Staffordshire has it all!

BROCTON HALL
4 miles from the M6 13. The club is situated to the South East of Stafford on the A34 Stafford Road. Turn into Sawpit Road heading for the village of Brocton, the course can be found on the left hand side before reaching the village centre.
Brocton Hall Golf Club was founded in 1894 and moved to its present location at Brocton, near Stafford, in 1923. The beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course, on the edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, was designed by Harry Vardon and its layout remains very largely as he planned it. The mature trees and attractive water features combine to provide a searching test of golf. The club house, a distinguished country house, provides excellent bar and renowned dining facilities. The 18 hole golf course is a parkland course set in the beautiful grounds of Brocton Hall Estate, which is on the edge of Cannock Chase.
The official opening of the course, on 12th July 1923 by the Fourth Earl of Lichfield, was followed by an exhibition match between the course architect Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Harry Vardon won The Open six times and also the US Open in 1900 with Ted Ray being Open Champion in 1912. The course, although not as long as many modern courses, provides a good test of golf. It is well bunkered and requires accuracy, the original course layout having had only minimal alterations over the years.

Handsworth Golf Club Three miles from the city centre. A million miles from the office! Only three miles from the city centre and a ten minute drive from both the M5 and M6 motorways Handsworth Golf Club is one of the most accessible golf courses in the Midlands and yet for many years it was considered the Midlands “hidden gem”. Recent changes to the marketing and promotion of the golf club have lead to more and more golfers discovering the absolute joy of playing golf at Handsworth. Established in 1895 and moving to the present site a year later the course was inspired by the designs of the great Harry Colt and opened in 1896 and is situated on the edge of the Sandwell Country Park. With the exception of
three new holes, to replace three that suffered drainage issues, in the seventies little has changed in the course layout since those early days. A gently undulating parkland course Handsworth is not long at 6325 yards but with a par of 70 it provides a fair test of golf to all standard of golfers. The narrow fairways, many of which are tree lined, place a premium on accuracy off the tee. This is never more evident than on the very first hole where the lake, dating back to the 12th century when it supplied fresh fish to a local monastery, runs down the right-hand side of the fairway for 200
yards and trees protect the left-hand side with the support of two fairway bunkers. The greens at Handsworth present the golfer with a variety challenges some having pronounced slopes easy to see not so easy to manage others have subtle changes that confirm that there is such a thing as an “optical illusion!” Your round at Handsworth will start with the challenge of the first tee shot along the edge of the lake and finish on our par 5 18th where a long straight tee shot will give you a great chance of birdie or better. Along the way you’ll have encountered the sloping green of the par 3 6th, wondered why you tried to hit it over the trees on the 14th and pondered not making birdie on the short 17th and maybe you’ll be pleased the views over Staffordshire helped take you mind off the golf!! The club boasts excellent practise facilities. The nine acre practise ground, long enough for most golfers to hit driver, is supplemented by

a specialist bunker and chipping area and 1000 square metres putting green. There are simply no excuses for being poorly prepared on the first tee at Handsworth. The clubhouse built on 1906 and extended over the years maintains much of its original character. The oak panelling gives the club a warm welcoming feel at all times of the year, and there a few better places in Midland golf to enjoy a post golf drink than sitting out on the clubhouse balcony at Handsworth looking over the lake to the 18th green. The bar is well stocked providing a selection of both keg and cask ales supported by a well-priced and varied wine cellar. Catering is available every day with the exception of Monday when catering is only provided by arrangement. The caterers Karen & Ian Needham offer an excellent range of both bar snacks and more formal meals for those with healthy appetites. Lee Bashford the resident club professional for more than 20 years and with his wife Claire operate one of the best stocked pro shops in Midland golf. An AA PGA professional Lee has built an enviable reputation as a coach and
specialises in the short game working with many of the Midlands best golfers. Lady golfers, be they members or visitors are an important focus for the club. One of the clubs flagship events is a ladies competition. The Bridget Jackson Bowl a 36 hole medal competition for elite lady amateur golfers attracts players from all over the UK. Counting towards both the English and Welsh ladies orders of merit the event has attracted many golfers that have gone on to join and win in the professional ranks. Handsworth’s location makes it the perfect venue for visitors and societies. Although like most club we publish society rates and packages our objective is to make the day special for the golfers. We include a complimentary green voucher to be used as a prize on the day and every participating golfer will be given a four for two voucher as a thank you from the club. Every golf day is different and we pride ourselves on getting it right for every client. Independent visitors are also made welcome at Handsworth booking through the pro shop we accept visitors Mon - Fri and Sun after 11.30am.

The course was designed in 1908 by 6-time Open Champion Harry Vardon and later re-modelled by Harry Colt. There have of course been minor alterations since then but the main features remain with the exception of the 17th hole where the green in 2006 was moved into the lake. The course measures 6813 yards, an ideal length for a course that caters for golfers of varying degrees of proficiency. The holes are sporting and call for all kinds of play and the greens, are, in normal conditions, almost perfect. There are a fair proportion of good two shot holes, several drive and pitch holes and three one shot holes, a combination of
ingredients which make for ideal golf. The Club has over the years hosted many major tournaments both Amateur and Professional. These include the English Amateur, Brabazon and British Boys Championships, the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, the English Ladies Amateur and Strokeplay Championships and the Dunlop Masters Professional Tournament. Little Aston is a host venue for The Open Regional Qualifying Series 2013-17 and will host the Carris Trophy for England Golf in July 2015. Although a traditional members Club, Little Aston extends a warm welcome to Societies and Visitors throughout the year.

Labelled as Staffordshire’s Best Kept Secret, this golf course is a gem. At just over 6200yds, it’s not the longest course you’ll play but that’s not where this course’s merits are. As in most traditionally maintained golf courses, putting your ball in the right place off the tee with tree lined fairways is paramount here. At the end of the fairways you will find firm, fast greens to give this course a ‘links-like’ feel.

Some drivable par4’s will tempt you but make sure you hit it straight. A great mixture on par3’s too, the four short holes range from 188 to 115yds. All standards of golf are tested here and you will be very satisfied if you play near your handicap. There are great views from the clubhouse bar which is at the highest point of the course.

The 18 hole course has an abundance of sand traps guarding each and every green requiring a precise second shot. The length is 6250 yards giving rise to a par of 70 but such is the test of the course that the standard scratch is 70. It is however, an “easy walking” parkland course and as such is suitable for all types and ages of golfer. The clubhouse has a reputation for first class catering and an excellent wine list.
Golf day packages tailor made to suit your requirements – visit our website for details. Membership to suit all lifestyles, from beginners to scratch golfers everyone is welcome.

In 1927 Harry S Colt remodelled the course and extended it to 18 holes producing a magnificent golfing challenge. It has been described by Martin Hawtree as “classic golfing country”. Over recent years it has been an ‘Open Qualifier’, has hosted International Boys and Girls matches, been the venue for the Carris Trophy, EGU events, County matches etc. At 6510yards long off the white stones (Par 70) it isn’t a long trek but every hole gives a different challenge and clear thought processes are needed. Players must think where to place the drive or tee shot, fairways need to be hit and bunkers avoided to enable well guarded greens to be found in regulation. The 6th hole is the only hole without bunkers but has a dogleg over a track (part of an old racecourse) providing yet another problem. There is heather and some gorse on the heathland soil with many an oak tree to
contend with too - no water in play. There is no doubt that Whittington Heath is a club with character; the more you play the course the more you will want to. In the clubhouse and well stocked Professional shop you will find both the atmosphere and welcome friendly and helpful. The food available is top quality and well priced. It is a course to put on any “bucket/ wish list”. Wonderful drainage, thanks to a sandy subsoil, means the course is open and playable all year round with excellent greens throughout all seasons. A “halfway house” is staffed at weekends and for most Open events. Three practice areas and a putting green enable members or visitors to hone their golfing skills. A Heathland Short Course 4795yards (Par 68) is also part of the main course – great for the young to learn on or for the Senior to prolong their enjoyment of golf.

How can digital media help golf clubs? More and more golf clubs are now considering digital and social media as part of their overall business plans when deciding on how to promote and advertise their course and facilities. Significantly more golf related sponsors are looking for digital media products to complement existing advertising campaigns and strategies. 72% of all online golf booking are done outside of traditional office opening times. A golfer’s traditional approach to choosing a course to visit and booking a game of golf is changing at a rapid pace due to the increased use of websites, targeted promotions and booking facilities online. Bringing a fresh, new approach to Golf club marketing and promotion Last year the Golf Guide re-launched its digital media presence and products to complement and enhance the established printed magazine providing a solution to a burning question in the golf course advertising Sector: How can golf courses adapt and keep pace with the ever changing world of digital media to promote their products?
Golf Guide Digital Media have launched an interactive, content rich mobile enabled website that proactively advertises the golf club as a whole, in a way not currently present in this market sector. The new site provides a fresh approach to dynamically advertise golf clubs, their facilities, special offers and complimentary sponsors. From a golfers’ perspective, we will provide an environment that will allow them to search for courses, hotels, local amenities and book everything directly through one site. More and more golfers are moving away from classical golf course memberships and are looking to play high quality courses at the right price. To ensure golf courses continue to attract golfers to their courses, marketing concepts and approaches are changing. Leveraging our position as a leading golf publication - we not only publish 10,000 printed copies of the magazine in the region - we are now digitally publishing the magazine to over 11,000 readers in the North West alone on a quarterly basis. For more information on how your golf club can be part of the new Digital media format, please contact Andrew Noone at andrew@thegolfguide.co.uk

Costa del Sol Spain
The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.
In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
