The Midlands Golf Guide

SPECIAL FEATURE

The European Senior Tour has a schedule and an ethos that any golfer would be envious of – travelling around Europe, enjoying fierce but friendly competition, playing on some of the finest courses you could imagine. And best of all? It all leads to a grand conclusion on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Hang on – sound familiar? It should do. Because if the European Senior Tour has it lucky, with a potent blend of rivalry, fun, great courses and superb finale, so too does the Golf Guide Race to Mauritius.

The 2015 European Senior Tour season was much like the 2014 in one resounding respect: Colin Montgomerie dominated it. In fact, it would be safe to say that the 52-year-old Scotsman has been reinvigorated since hitting the senior section. We all remember that he dominated the European Tour for 15 years from the early 1990s, winning eight Order of Merit titles, but the last of those came in 2005. There was a brief return to competition, albeit in the form of his captaincy of the European 2010 Ryder Cup team, but Monty missed the buzz – his life

lacked cut and thrust of being in contention. If you hadn’t guessed as much, his results since celebrating his half century have more than proved it. Put simply, Monty is a golfer reborn, claiming three senior major championships in the States and taking his home tour apart in a manner that echoes his success on the European Tour. He travelled to Mauritius for the season-ending MCB Tour Championship having claimed seven European Senior Tour titles in just 15 starts over two and a bit years – and he wasn’t about to stop there. He made a hole-in-one

in the second round, clinched victory in the final round and ended the year lifting the John Jacobs Trophy, awarded to the number one player on the Order of Merit. “Third time lucky,” he said afterwards. “I’ve been here twice before and finished sixth both times. The family love the resort because it’s a beautiful place and a wonderful week, but I had unfinished business. “Myself and my family have had a fantastic time on our trips to Constance Belle Mare Plage and we’ve been treated like royalty. I’m just relieved to finally get the win and it tops a great year for me.”

SPECIAL FEATURE

Englishman Paul Wesselingh failed to win an unprecedented hat-trick of titles, having won in both 2013 and 2014, but like Montgomerie he was glad to be back at a favourite venue. Wesselingh’s story is an inspiration for every golfer from hacker to professional because he never once gave up the dream of competing at the highest level and of making the most of his love of golf. “I played off 12 as a 16-year-old,” he explained after his first win two years ago. “I trained as an accountant but it wasn’t for me. I wanted to be a club pro and I also gave European Tour Q School a bash but I wasn’t good enough.” He refused to let the dream slip however and when he noticed his game mature in his early 40s he swiftly targeted the Senior Tour, improving his fitness and honing his competitive instincts on the minor tours. The commitment has proved worthwhile as he became Rookie of the Year in 2012, won the Order of Merit 12 months later and arrives in Mauritius still high on the experience of not only taking on his idols, but beating them. “All levels of golfers have said I’ve motivated them,” said the Lancashire born golfer, “and I hope so. Golf is a sport that always offers a challenge.” He’s also aware that he has a secret weapon at Constance Belle Mare Plage. “The sea,” he laughed. “I have a swim before the round and then I have another one afterwards. It’s one hundred yards from the first tee to the sea, with my room in between – why wouldn’t you?”

The Midlands Golf Guide

Like Wesselingh, amateur golfers can always aim higher. And also like Wesselingh they can aim for a prize in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 2015 saw the first ‘Golf Guide – Race to Mauritius’ in partnership with golf holiday experts Chaka Travel, who since 1995 have sent more golfers to Constance Belle Mare Plage than anyone else in the the world. This year’s Race to Mauritius saw Rob Cooper and Luke Eustace emerge victorious and their prize is an all expenses paid trip to Mauritius, staying at Constance Belle Mare Plage – Yes, the very resort which the legends of European Tour golf head to at the end of every season! Like those top senior professionals the Race to Mauritius first makes it way from one great venue to another – from the rock and roll associations of The Astbury to the history of Hillside and Hesketh, from Silloth on the west coast to Hexham on the east coast, from Open Championship qualifying courses to the home of golf itself. It’s a blend that the seniors would recognise and appreciate. It provides the opportunity to enjoy the heat of battle that Montgomerie missed, the chance to make the most of your game that Wesselingh has enjoyed, and the prospect of a great golf resort at the end of it.

The Legends Course which hosts the MCB Tour Championship is a tight and technical layout that is perfectly suited for the canny golfer. Tee shot accuracy is at a premium and yet length can pay because the four par-fives can each be attacked by the long driver. If it is smart to stay straight from the tee, it also pays to keep your eyes open to your surroundings because there are not many courses that boast vivid red flame trees as the backdrop to greens, or witness a herd of java deer cross the final fairway to take a dip in the lake, or be offered the unlikely (but genuine) refreshment of tamarind, plucked fresh from the tree by your caddie when you stray from the fairway. Unlike any other resort on the island Constance Belle Mare Plage boasts a second course, the Links, and whilst it is not a links layout that any wizened Scotsman might recognise, it offers a subtly different test to the Legends. The Links is wider from the tee, with bigger greens and rolling terrain that was formed by volcanic eruptions of the long distant past (indeed some shots will be played over volcanic outcrops and lava tracks). Put together the courses offer a great challenge, with views of the island’s mountains and the lagoon that sits alongside the resort. Throughout the week of the MCB Tour Championship the two courses play host to a series of amateur tournaments, in addition to the Senior Tour finale. The result is something of a festival of golf that echoes the Race to Mauritius. Golfers from across the world flock to the resort that week, testimony to the quality of the courses and the hotel – and proof that the Race to Mauritius prize is worth winning. Get in touch with The Golf Guide or Chaka Travel for more information.

Experience Constance Belle Mare Plage for yourself 12 nights Half Board including flights, transfers and unlimited golf on the two courses from only £1695! Contact the Mauritius experts Chaka Travel to enquire: (t) 028 9023 2112 (e) enquiries@chakatravel.com (w)www.chakatravel.com

Devel Golf The future of pitch mark repair You may not have heard of Devel Golf given that they only launched in November 2015. However, given their creative designs, it is a brand you will soon be hearing lots more about. With a focus on innovation and quality, Devel Golf aim to break from conventional golfing traditions and create products with a functional difference. Their first product, The Devel Pitchfork, epitomises this ideology. Designed and manufactured in the UK, The Devel Pitchfork is a revolutionary new type of pitch mark repair tool. Comprising a unique three prong design, The Devel Pitchfork delivers improved pitch mark repair by ensuring only damaged turf is repaired. Duncan Campbell, the founder of Devel Golf, said: “The three prong design corresponds to the shape of a pitch mark. The longer central prong penetrates to the base, while the two outer prongs repair the edges of the mark. The result is less damage to the soil surrounding the impact area and faster repair.” “The technique for effective pitch mark repair remains the same with The Devel Pitchfork.

Simply insert the Pitchfork at the edge of the pitch mark and gently pull the edges inwards. Repeat this several times and the pitch mark will be fully repaired with minimal damage to the greens.” “We believe The Devel Pitchfork is the future of pitch mark repair. We spent over 8 months developing the product, constantly refining and improving to get it to where it is today. Whether it be the three prong design, the high quality anodised aluminium, laser etched logo or chamfered prongs, we believe The Devel Pitchfork is the essential accessory for any golfer.” “The Devel Pitchfork is the first of many new accessories the company hopes to launch – with further products planned for 2016.” The Devel Pitchfork comes with magnetic ball marker and is packaged in a beautiful presentation tin, making it the perfect gift for any golfer. For corporate and society orders the ball marker and packaging sleeve can be customised with a chosen logo or text (min order required).

The Devel Pitchfork is available to buy now from the Devel Golf website for £7.99. Further information and purchase details can be found at www.develgolf.com

Golf Driving Bays A fast growing company on the brink of something amazing! 6 years ago after suffering 10 British winters hibernating and scratching around trying to coach and play to earn a living, PGA Professional Freddy Valenti decided to try and build himself an indoor teaching facility at his then home Golf Club of Pryors Hayes near Chester. On searching up and down the internet he came up with nothing. There were shed builders, stable block providers and agricultural out houses but nobody provided a service for the golf industry outside of spending 100’s of thousands on a huge driving range. So, Freddy set off on pulling together, joiner, timber provider, ground worker, electrician, software provider and I.T company to help with creating a teaching studio. With limited knowledge of the building game Freddy relied on the expertise of others to provide him with a set of products that were fit for purpose and would stand the test of time. It also had to be done on a limited budget. In most cases he was satisfied and after a few weeks of hard graft he had built his own teaching bay to use all year round. He could now provide private lessons in the warm and dry, provide video lessons and have a secure place to store all of his equipment.

The response from the public was staggering. Lesson revenue went up 20% in the summer and 300% in the winter, in fact he was as busy in the winter as the middle of the year. The big surprise was the response from his fellow Pro’s! “..When I posted on facebook about my new teaching bay I got a tremendous response from lots of Pro’s in the area asking who had built it for me and how they could get their hands on one” This lead Freddy to liaise with the same team (learning from issues arising on building his own) and build further bays at Hale Golf Club and Bramhall. Both Pro’s recording similar revenue boosts due to having the new teaching bay. Until now, no business was officially founded, Freddy just project managed a team of guys together to get a studio build complete and functional. He decided that setting up a website www.golfdrivingbays.com was the way forward to see what came of it. 6 months on from his first build Golf Clubs were now starting to take notice, The Wilmslow Golf Club had enquired about a potential studio build with some driving range bays attached for the members. £70,000 later Golf Driving Bays had built an amazing facility with a trackman studio, 2 members bays, power, lighting, toilet

block, changing room, outdoor astro-turf area and 24 bay car parking area. This now was the fuse paper lit. Since Wilmslow Golf Driving Bays with Freddy at the helm have built over 30 studios and driving ranges at some prestigious venues such as – Royal Worlington & Newmarket, Porters Park GC, SandMartins GC, West Hill GC, Billingham, Poulton Park GC, Birchwood GC, Girton GC, Cotswold Hills GC, Ashton in Makerfield and Sandmoor GC. This year has seen an unprecedented rise in private clients having back garden or home studios built including a very high profile footballer that we can’t name just yet but all will be revealed next month. GDB are the only company in the UK that do a complete turn-key solution from ground works to laying the carpets. “we now work with Trackman, Foresight, MIA and GASP to facilitate anything their clients need from bespoke fit outs to 16 bay driving ranges..” “I can’t wait for 2016, we have some major growth to deal with but it’s all good fun!” With 8 buildings ordered and pre-planned for next year it seems that the only way is up for Golf Driving Bays! SGH Sports Management Like Tiger Woods’ iron play and the price of a green fee, retirement from professional golf just isn’t what it used to be.

Gone are the days when a sleepy retirement as a club pro was the only option, a fact never truer than in the case of former European Tour pro turned sports travel entrepreneur Simon Hurd, a journeyman of just over 100 pro events spanning a 13 year career and now director of SGH Sports Events. After graduating the Tour School at the first attempt in 1995, Hurd found early Tour life difficult, having to wait until 2002 to win his first Challenge Tour title at the Rolex Swiss Open. This helped propel him into the bright lights of the European Tour, where a career highlight came in the form of a 10th place finish at the 2007 Johnnie Walker Classic. “I shot a third round 66 that week, which I think was only bettered by Brad Kennedy first up,” he remembers, “I played with Ernie on the final day which in itself was a pretty special experience, and it was great to look up at see my name on the scoreboard with guys like Monty and Retief.” He appreciates how lucky he was to live the dream for so many years, and though it was tough at times, only has fond memories. “I loved tour life. Being paid to do what we love is everybody’s dream, and I lived it to the full, but it was towards the end of my time on the tour that I realised that there is life after golf.”

Hurd was a hugely popular figure on tour and remains close friends with household names such as John Daly, Jamie Donaldson and Ian Poulter, with whom a chance conversation grew into a whole new chapter in his life. “Poults and I were talking about a well-known belt manufacturer and how we thought the quality of their brand was pretty shoddy. They were very expensive too, and within weeks I set about filling the gap in the market for high quality, affordable golf belts.” What materialised was Druh, an affordable golf fashion brand that now supplies its products not only to individuals such as Lee Westwood and Robert Karlsson, but also the European Ryder and Solheim Cup teams. But like all great entrepreneurs, Hurd isn’t done there. With fellow Yorkshireman and lifelong friend Andrew Jennings, he has formed SGH Sports Events, a sports travel company that is rapidly growing a reputation for offering incredible access to some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events. “I always had the mickey taken out of me by mates who couldn’t quite get hold of the tickets I could, through friends or contacts I’d made through golf and Druh, and it struck me that there wasn’t a company out there that would provide this level of access for a reasonable price.”

Alongside Hurd, former British Amateur Ladies Champion and Curtis Cup winner Kelly Tidy has joined the company as an ambassador and will accompany Hurd and the rest of the touring party to the Masters next year. “It’s great to have Kelly on board, and we can’t wait to get across to Augusta again next April. The packages we’ve been putting out have been hugely popular and already we’ve got 45 people joining us on the trip.” “Followers of golf don’t need me to tell them, but The Masters really is something special. You’re watching history with every stroke and to actually be there to witness Tiger’s chip or Bubba’s wedge, well it’s priceless.” 2016 SGH Masters packages are still available, and the difference, Hurd says, is in how bespoke the service is. “At the end of the day, it’s your experience, so the itinerary is entirely up to you. Our job is simply to make sure that we’re there to help you every step of the way.” Would you like to sample the experience of a lifetime at the 2016 Masters? Derbyshire Introduction

Derbyshire

©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth

Derbyshire is renowned for being a hugely diverse county with town and city nestled in breathtaking countryside with industry and leisure working hand in hand. The county’s premier city is Derby, which although steeped in history, is one of Britain’s youngest cities, being awarded its Charter by Her Majesty the Queen in 1977. Derby has many unique characteristics with a rich mixture of arts, tourism and cultural venues and a pedestrianised city centre, which makes shopping a joy. There are several towns in the county with Derby being the largest and most populous. Derbyshire can also claim the first national park to

be set up in Britain - the Peak National Park which lies at the southern end of the Pennines, between Sheffield and Manchester, it’s boundaries also spread into several other counties. The park covers over 500 square miles, three quarters of which lie within Derbyshire itself. Dame Ellen MacArthur, one of Derby’s most famous people from recent times, held the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a yacht! Heading out of the city there is a choice of bustling market towns such as Ashbourne, Bakewell and Chesterfield; and many picturesque villages nestled in unspoilt countryside such as Buxton. Situated in the

heart of the Peak District, this beautiful Georgian Spa town boasts the highest market place in the country. In the hilly districts the land is mostly in pasture; much of it is rocky and unproductive. Oats, barley, potatoes, and wheat are cultivated; and there are many excellent dairy-farms. Warm mineral springs are numerous, the most popular being those at Buxton, Matlock, and Bakewell. Coal is abundant; iron ore and lead are worked; among the other mineral products are zinc, manganese, and barytes. Derbyshire offers a variety of scenery, a wide array of interesting places to visit and things to do, whatever the time of year.

BREADSALL PRIORY

34

Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel & Country Club Standing in over 400 acres of parkland, near the Peak District National Park, Breadsall Priory, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club offers contrasting 36 holes of golf in beautiful surroundings. The two courses, the Priory and the Moorland, are both popular with members and visitors, not least because they offer a combination of exciting golf coupled with superb views over the surrounding countryside. The Priory, the eldest of the two, was designed by David Cox and opened for play in 1977. It measures 6,054 yards from the medal tees, which is relatively short by modern standards, but don’t let that mislead you because it is also

tight and tree-lined and offers a real test to all but the most accurate strikers. Cox’s lay-out has numerous fine holes, not the least of which are the panoramic 363 yard par 4 11th and the demanding 424 yard par 4 16th. However, the pick of the bunch might well be the delightful 183 yard par 3 17th, which is played from an elevated tee to a generous green guarded by bunkers and a ditch to the rear.

Set on an adjacent hillside, it is ideal for year-round golf; the newer Moorland Course measures a manageable 6,100 yards and affords fine views of the hotel and the surrounding area. Like the Priory, this Donald Steel design features a plethora of memorable holes including the demanding 452 yard par 4 2nd, the picturesque 126 yard par 3 6th and the 406 yard par 4 12th.

CAVENDISH

Cavendish Golf Club is on Watford Road, to the West of Buxton, just off the A53 (St John’s Road) and only minutes from the town centre. Buxton is conveniently situated 25 miles from Manchester and Sheffield and 20 miles from Stoke on Trent.

Facilities

One of the finest golf courses in Derbyshire. Created by Dr. Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1925, Cavendish is one of over 100 golf courses around the world that he helped to design. Particularly notable among these are The Augusta National and Cypress Point in USA, Royal Melbourne in Australia and of course, Cavendish, here in Buxton. In 1923 the Duke of Devonshire requested MacKenzie to design an 18 hole golf course in Buxton and the link with the Cavendish family has remained to date. The course has retained virtually all of the features present in MacKenzie’s original design, making full use of the natural features and providing a true test

for golfers at all levels of ability. Not long by modern standards, it requires accurate play to the demanding greens, which have left many visitors longing for a return to our exciting course. Cavendish exemplifies MacKenzie’s belief that “length has nothing to do with the quality of a hole”. The abundance of wildlife such as buzzard, sparrow hawk, kestrel, deer and hares can be a distraction even to the most focused player, but we believe that it adds to the experience of playing in this quiet, private area of Buxton. Cavendish is thought by some to be Dr MacKenzie’s most accomplished work in the UK and quite possibly the best layout in the world under 6000 yards.

Cavendish Golf Club Buxton

Clubhouse, restaurant, spike bar, well-stocked licensed bar, well-appointed and comfortable lounge with spectacular views over the course from the terrace area. The terrace provides an idyllic haven to relax with a drink after a game and to soak in the scenery. Practice area, putting green, pro shop, ample car parking.

Matlock Golf Club Established in 1906 on the undulating moorland above the town of Matlock, the eastern gateway to the Peak District National Park, our Club offers a challenging 18-hole par 70 course of just over 5,800 yards (yellow tees) with spectacular views across the Derwent Valley and unrivalled practice facilities, including a 10 bay covered and floodlit driving range.

With every hole different and the Bentley Brook meandering through the course to add further interest, Matlock is a regular choice for county and inter-county fixtures and each year welcomes many other visitors - individuals, societies and corporate groups. The off-course facilities provided by our friendly Professional, Bar and Catering staff are just as important in supporting our aim to make the ‘Matlock GC Visitor Experience’ one that will bring golfers back time and time again. The clubhouse is also available for hire for private functions such as wedding receptions, anniversary/ birthday parties and business meetings. The new Driving Range, with its custom fitting facility, makes Matlock Golf Club a centre of golfing excellence in the most attractive of locations. For existing players who are moving into the area, or those who are considering taking up the game for the first time, we have a limited number of gentlemen, ladies and junior membership places available. These include automatic access to the driving range.

Membership of the driving range, on its own, is also available. This may interest members of other clubs in the locality that lack bad weather practice facilities - or anyone who just wants to enjoy the pleasure of hitting the occasional golf ball! Driving Range At Matlock Golf Club our aim is to provide you with an excellent and enjoyable opportunity to practise both your long game, as well as your short game. We have 10 bay flood-lit driving range which provides a state-of-the-art golfing facility. We pride ourselves on using only the highest quality mats and ‘Premium range’ balls. The range is open from 8.00am to 9.00pm in winter (8.00am to 6.00pm on Sundays during the winter period) and 8.00am to dusk in summer. We have a separate practice area the other side of the 18th fairway, with a chipping green and bunker, which enables you to practice your short game off the grass.

Nottinghamshire Introduction

Nottinghamshire ©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth

As good at archery as he is at pulling in the tourists, Robin Hood is probably the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Nottingham. The story of Robin, Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men is one of the most famous medieval tales and has been the subject of TV and film adaptations. Nottinghamshire, which is situated in the heart of England, is famous for lace-making, bicycle (notably Raleigh bikes) and tobacco industries as well as Sherwood Forest - stretching over 30 miles from Nottingham to Worksop. From the sleepy market towns and golden fields of the countryside, to the shops and clubs of the cosmopolitan Nottingham city, this is a county of contrasts and surprises.

©VisitBritain / Grant Pritchard

This county has plenty of gardens, but many of its most interesting ones are well hidden accessible only at particular times of the year, or only known to horticultural specialists. Nottinghamshire is sheltered by the Pennines to the west, so receives relatively low rainfall. Famous names connected to the county of Nottinghamshire include D H Lawrence, Robin Hood, Lord Byron, Paul Smith and Jake Bugg. Nottingham is also host to the oldest football club - Notts County. There is so much to do in this lively fun packed county - see world class sport, amazing live performances, excellent nightlife and cutting edge art in some outstanding venues - what are you waiting for?

Formally established in 1901, Newark Golf Club moved to its current location four miles from the centre of Newark in 1934. The Club and course have been continually developed and improved over this time to keep pace with the requirements of the modern golf club member. The natural easy walking topography coupled with course design improvements create a challenging but fair test for golfers of all levels of ability. The combination of woodland and heathland aspects make the focus on accuracy rather than distance, although there are occasions where both are required, for example the 4th and 16th holes. There also is every opportunity to improve skill levels as Newark

has superb practice and coaching facilities, both indoor and out. A range of group packages are available and visitors are welcome to tailor these to meet their own personal requirements. Selected as the County course for 2015 Newark Golf Club will be hosting the county championships and county opens for the top amateurs and Professionals throughout Nottinghamshire. The large Clubhouse with the Club’s in house team can cater for the most refined to the biggest function, be it private celebrations or corporate events. The Club’s website has a wealth of information on the many excellent facilities and services available.

Notts. Golf Club (Hollinwell) is one of England’s best kept secrets. Golfers who find their way to Hollinwell know they have arrived at a special place from the moment they turn the final bend on the long driveway to the Club and see a magnificent view of the course and imposing clubhouse ahead of them. Set in the gently rolling hills of North Nottinghamshire in the heart of Robin Hood County, Notts. (Hollinwell) offers one of the finest examples of traditional heathland golf in Great Britain. Only 10 minutes from junction 27 of the M1.

Ranked in ‘The Top 100 Courses of the World’. Notts. Golf Club (Hollinwell) continues to feature highly in all accredited golf course rankings. In 2014 the 13th, a 241 yard par three, was included in Golf Worlds 100 Classic Golf Holes across the United Kingdom and Continental Europe.

The Club has hosted many top professional & amateur events throughout its long history - Dunlop Masters, John Player Classic, Brabazon Trophy and more recently hosted the prestigious British Boys Championship in 2012 won by Matthew Fitzpatrick. Notts. Golf Club also hosted the Brabazon Trophy for the 5th time in the Clubs history in June 2015, which was won by Irelands Cormac Shavin.

The members at Notts. (Hollinwell) are very proud of their club, one of the great tests of golf, and we extend a warm welcome to visitors from near and far. Come and view Robin Hood’s seat behind the second green, take a drink from the well by the eighth tee that gives the course its name and soak up the atmosphere that only comes with a course of great stature and a wonderful history.

Fine Golf rates Notts. as giving a four star “joy to be alive” feeling. Brian Waites, the successful tournament pro and Ryder Cup player, was also the Club’s professional for many years.

We have a thriving social calendar and seek to balance the expected traditions of golf with the demands of modern life. Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club, founded in 1909, is one of the premier golf courses in Nottinghamshire and is the ‘spiritual home’ of the McGregor Trophy, the English Boys under 16 Championship which returns here every 5 years. Past winners include Justin Rose [1995], Edoardo Mollinari, [1996] and Oliver Fisher [2004]. In 2014 John Axelsen, from Denmark, equalled the course record of 66 whilst winning the McGregor Trophy at Radcliffe. We offer an excellent, picturesque 18-hole parkland course played through tree lined fairways and around water. It is easy walking and the challenge includes four tough par 3’s, two long par 5’s and three punishing holes to finish. Our greens are hand mown and present very subtle variations.

We run numerous competitions on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings, 4 Opens during the summer and have fully adopted equality throughout. However, we know from experience that it isn’t just about the golf. The clubhouse is a welcoming friendly environment providing all that the modern golfer needs including an extensive bar range and menu, wine list and WiFi to keep up with the latest news! Our caterers are renowned for their excellent range of meals and Sunday lunch is a must for booking ahead We have a thriving social calendar and seek to balance the expected traditions of golf with the demands of modern life. As such we have a relaxed dress code that allows denim. Try us – you won’t regret it

RUFFORD PARK

58

Rufford Park Golf and Country Club Set in the heart of Sherwood Forest, Rufford Park Golf and Country Club is a unique venue with an 18 hole golf course, conference and meeting facilities and is one of the best wedding venues in Nottinghamshire. The 6368 yard, par 70 golf course is set in over 200 acres of beautiful parkland and woodland, within the old Rufford Abbey Deer Park. During your round you will be spoilt by the spectacular views of the Rufford Lakes and Abbey within the famous Sherwood Forest. Opened in July 1994, Rufford has had extensive direction from former Ryder Cup player Ken Brown. The course has been carefully designed to compliment the naturally undulating parkland landscape.

Christmas Parties & Events

A fantastic all weather course having the benefit of being constructed on a free draining sandy base provides quality playing surfaces throughout the year. The course is challenging for all levels of player, from novice to professional. In particular, the 17th is perhaps the most memorable of the many feature holes, requiring a daunting downhill tee shot over a meandering river.

History Records begin with the Club’s formation in 1895, moving to our present location in 1912 when the Sixth Duke of Portland granted the lease of a portion of his Welbeck Estate for the pursuance of the game of golf. Only four years later we record courtesy of the course being granted to Officers of the Scottish Highland Infantry Regiments in trench warfare training camps adjacent to the twelfth tee. The ‘Clipstone Camp Cup’ and the ‘Scottish Trophy’, donated by these Officers, are amongst our most revered treasures. By 1921 with an expanding membership of over 200, Sherwood Forest Golf Club became the proud owner of its own course when the ever benevolent Duke sold the freehold to the members for £1,500. From an original Harry. S. Colt layout the course was redesigned in the 1920’s by James Braid the well known Open Champion and golf architect. On completion he reported ‘a wonderfully good golf course, as good, in fact, as any inland course in the country.’ Eighty years later and to his great credit, apart from a few extensions, we still wrestle with Braid’s course.

Course A full eighteen hole true Championship Course of 6,806 yards (par 70 S.S.S. 74) awaits you with none of the modern water hazards but ninety eight bunkers of local sand and long carries over punishing swathes of heather. As a general rule we are renowned for our ‘most excellent’ greens and a long, demanding turn for home. Very rarely will your ‘second half’ score better the first. The course record was lowered to 64 in 2006 by eighteen year old Darren Wright of Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, when triumphant in the Carris Trophy (English Boys Amateur Stroke Play Championships). A very memorable event and a name to remember for the future. With such a treasured asset, the Greens Committee strive to maintain standards of excellence with their strategic long term planning. For instance you will notice our flock of sheep grazing on the outer limits devouring forestation which would otherwise impact on the course. You will also be warmly greeted on arrival at our traditional clubhouse and the renovated first tee area.

The facilities both on and off the course make The Nottinghamshire the ideal venue whether you are a group of friends looking for an enjoyable round of golf, a local business looking to entertain clients or a corporate customer wanting to organise a showcase event for their clients. In the Summer months enjoy the summer sun with the spacious patio just yards away from the 1st tee and 18th green of the Open Course, a great place to relax after your round. The comfortable surroundings of our recently refurbished Clubhouse complex are perfect for enjoying the stunning views from the Lakeview Restaurant whilst enjoying a bite to eat. The Open Course comprises a front nine, set around an impressive lake and waterways complex with the back nine offering a different challenge with mature trees strategically placed to make it a true parkland course. We have made significant changes to 12 of the 18 holes introducing new tees, more strategically placed trees and water features to enhance your golfing experience with an island drop hole on the par 3 14th hole - The Open Course is now known throughout the Midlands as a true test of golf. The Masters Course was extended from a 9-hole to an 18-hole course, with the new nine designed by Peter Alliss. The front nine has recently undergone some major renovation

and remodelling, and combines hedgerows and undulating fairways with large greens and water features. The 16th hole on the Masters Course is perhaps The Nottinghamshire’s signature hole, a 136 yard par 3 over water to a wide but shallow green, with an approach that rolls back to the water. The substantial lake in this area of the course is sensitively managed to enhance both aquatic and bird life, and is also the home of the 11th tee, which is on a peninsula in the middle of the lake. We highly recommend a viewing of our courses and venue with a member of our friendly and highly experience golf team. The team can show you around the courses and discuss your individual requirements for your golf day, tailoring a package to suit your needs and budget. Shropshire Introduction

Shropshire ©VisitBritain / Daniel Bosworth

Shropshire is a county in the West Midlands of England. It borders Powys and Wrexham in Wales to the west and north-west, Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the south-east and Herefordshire to the south. Shropshire is one of England’s most rural and sparsely populated counties, with a population density of 136/km2. The county flower is the round-leaved sundew. Shropshire, may be one of England’s quiet counties but don’t be deceived; there’s still plenty to see and do. Shropshire has over 90 places to visit - historic houses and

beautiful gardens, the famous Ironbridge, museums and family attractions. It also has a long history of wild border conflicts which have left a legacy of atmospheric hillforts, earthworks and castles. Shropshire has many traditional market towns including gourmet Ludlow and the county town of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury almost surrounded by the River Severn and birthplace of Charles Darwin, is a medieval delight of black and white buildings. If food is your thing then Ludlow won’t disappoint; as Shropshire’s gastronomic capital the restaurants with Michelin Star

are supported by the numerous delis, restaurants, cafes and food markets, all serving quality local food and not forgetting the famous Ludlow Food Festival. The Shropshire landscape reflects the fact that Shropshire is geologically unique and creates the special habitats that ensures that Shropshire wildlife is so diverse. All this adds up to making Shropshire great walking country. So whether you’re out and about on Shropshire Hills, by the Meres and Mosses or strolling along with the Shropshire Union and Llangollen Canals you can guarantee the Shropshire air will rejuvenate and restore you.

Church Stretton Golf Club A spectacular golfing experience Church Stretton is quite simply unique. It’s 18 holes sit atop the stunning Shropshire Hills an area of outstanding natural beauty - and it’s panoramic views are among the finest in England. This gem of a golf course has been here for over 100 years and in that time some of the finest golfers ever to play the game have taken on it’s unique challenges.

Major champions such as Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam and Henry Cotton have graced the fairways, and legends, Harry Vardon and James Braid helped design some of its most outstanding holes. When Ian Woosnam played here, he simply labeled the course as “brilliant.” Visitors will know exactly what he meant the moment they arrive.

If you do manage to avert your gaze from the views you will find bracken and heather-lined fairways that snake among hills and cavernous valleys, leading to undulating, tricky greens that will ask tough questions of your putting stroke. Church Stretton doesn’t rely on freakish length or huge carries off the tee to give it teeth - the spectacular natural landscape gives it all the bite it needs. The sandy soil and excellent year-round drainage means the course is a pleasure to play all year round. Many of the golfing Press have also come along to see what all the fuss is about. Todays Golfer, Golf Monthly and others have heaped praise on this “unique gem” and a recent course review described Church Stretton as “a spectacular golfing experience that anyone who loves the game should play.” But don’t take our word for it - the only way to truly experience all that this unique course has to offer - is to come and play.

At just over 5,000 yards in length the course may be considered short by modern standards; but complacency is not recommended! Considered by many to be the hardest starting hole in the county, the first has a steep bank in front of the green and out of bounds to the right. The second and seventh both play to uphill flags, with the fifteenth steeply downhill. The thirteenth and fourteenth are both superb driving holes. Some holes can be driven, such as the sixteenth, but beware - go off line and you are out of bounds. Many greens are raised or built into the side of a hill, requiring accuracy of length and direction. The borrows are subtle and can be

misleading. Take the twelfth for example, where it is difficult to judge whether the green slopes away or towards the hill. The turf you will find delightful to play from with a distictively ‘links’ type feel. The wind can be a factor on breezy days, challenging the golfers skill and imagination. During the summer months, ferns narrow the fairways waiting to consume errant tee shots, particularly on the intimidating ninth. With excellent drainage the course plays superbly throughout the year. Because each hole is unique the course always retains your interest, so no matter how many times you play, you will never tire of its character.

The Midlands Golf Guide

Staffordshire Introduction

Staffordshire ©VisitBritain / Adrian Houston

Staffordshire, abbreviated Staffs, is a landlocked county in the West Midlands of England. It adjoins Cheshire to the north west, Derbyshire and Leicestershire to the east, Warwickshire to the south east, West Midlands and Worcestershire to the south and Shropshire to the west. Staffordshire is famous for its potteries, its inland navigations, and its founderies, blast furnaces, slitting mills, and various other branches of the iron trade. The mines of coals, copper, lead, and iron ore are rich and extensive; and there are also numerous quarries of stone, alabaster, and limestone.

Staffordshire is also host to many other attractions including Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Trentham Gardens and the National Brewery Centre - Staffordshire has the only beer that is still traditionally crafted in oak casks by the last remaining brewer in town, on the fringes of England’s National Forest. And lets not forget the world famous Oak Cakes that originate from this county Staffordshire is home to the highest village in Britain, Flash. The village, in the Staffordshire Moorlands, stands at 463 m (1518 ft) above sea level.

The football club Stoke City is one of the oldest professional football clubs in existence, and was founded in 1863 and played at the Victoria Ground for 119 years from 1878 until their relocation to the Britannia Stadium in 1997. They were among the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. From the celebrated cities of Stoke-on-Trent and Lichfield to the peace and tranquillity of Cannock Chase, whether you’re hiking in the peaks, beer tasting in Burton or ghost hunting in Tamworth, Staffordshire has it all!

BROCTON HALL

4 miles from the M6 13. The club is situated to the South East of Stafford on the A34 Stafford Road. Turn into Sawpit Road heading for the village of Brocton, the course can be found on the left hand side before reaching the village centre.

Brocton Hall Golf Club was founded in 1894 and moved to its present location at Brocton, near Stafford, in 1923. The beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course, on the edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, was designed by Harry Vardon and its layout remains very largely as he planned it. The mature trees and attractive water features combine to provide a searching test of golf. The club house, a distinguished country house, provides excellent bar and renowned dining facilities. The 18 hole golf course is a parkland course set in the beautiful grounds of Brocton Hall Estate, which is on the edge of Cannock Chase.

The official opening of the course, on 12th July 1923 by the Fourth Earl of Lichfield, was followed by an exhibition match between the course architect Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Harry Vardon won The Open six times and also the US Open in 1900 with Ted Ray being Open Champion in 1912. The course, although not as long as many modern courses, provides a good test of golf. It is well bunkered and requires accuracy, the original course layout having had only minimal alterations over the years.

Handsworth Golf Club Three miles from the city centre. A million miles from the office! Only three miles from the city centre and a ten minute drive from both the M5 and M6 motorways Handsworth Golf Club is one of the most accessible golf courses in the Midlands and yet for many years it was considered the Midlands “hidden gem”. Recent changes to the marketing and promotion of the golf club have lead to more and more golfers discovering the absolute joy of playing golf at Handsworth. Established in 1895 and moving to the present site a year later the course was inspired by the designs of the great Harry Colt and opened in 1896 and is situated on the edge of the Sandwell Country Park. With the exception of

three new holes, to replace three that suffered drainage issues, in the seventies little has changed in the course layout since those early days. A gently undulating parkland course Handsworth is not long at 6325 yards but with a par of 70 it provides a fair test of golf to all standard of golfers. The narrow fairways, many of which are tree lined, place a premium on accuracy off the tee. This is never more evident than on the very first hole where the lake, dating back to the 12th century when it supplied fresh fish to a local monastery, runs down the right-hand side of the fairway for 200

yards and trees protect the left-hand side with the support of two fairway bunkers. The greens at Handsworth present the golfer with a variety challenges some having pronounced slopes easy to see not so easy to manage others have subtle changes that confirm that there is such a thing as an “optical illusion!” Your round at Handsworth will start with the challenge of the first tee shot along the edge of the lake and finish on our par 5 18th where a long straight tee shot will give you a great chance of birdie or better. Along the way you’ll have encountered the sloping green of the par 3 6th, wondered why you tried to hit it over the trees on the 14th and pondered not making birdie on the short 17th and maybe you’ll be pleased the views over Staffordshire helped take you mind off the golf!! The club boasts excellent practise facilities. The nine acre practise ground, long enough for most golfers to hit driver, is supplemented by

a specialist bunker and chipping area and 1000 square metres putting green. There are simply no excuses for being poorly prepared on the first tee at Handsworth. The clubhouse built on 1906 and extended over the years maintains much of its original character. The oak panelling gives the club a warm welcoming feel at all times of the year, and there a few better places in Midland golf to enjoy a post golf drink than sitting out on the clubhouse balcony at Handsworth looking over the lake to the 18th green. The bar is well stocked providing a selection of both keg and cask ales supported by a well-priced and varied wine cellar. Catering is available every day with the exception of Monday when catering is only provided by arrangement. The caterers Karen & Ian Needham offer an excellent range of both bar snacks and more formal meals for those with healthy appetites. Lee Bashford the resident club professional for more than 20 years and with his wife Claire operate one of the best stocked pro shops in Midland golf. An AA PGA professional Lee has built an enviable reputation as a coach and

specialises in the short game working with many of the Midlands best golfers. Lady golfers, be they members or visitors are an important focus for the club. One of the clubs flagship events is a ladies competition. The Bridget Jackson Bowl a 36 hole medal competition for elite lady amateur golfers attracts players from all over the UK. Counting towards both the English and Welsh ladies orders of merit the event has attracted many golfers that have gone on to join and win in the professional ranks. Handsworth’s location makes it the perfect venue for visitors and societies. Although like most club we publish society rates and packages our objective is to make the day special for the golfers. We include a complimentary green voucher to be used as a prize on the day and every participating golfer will be given a four for two voucher as a thank you from the club. Every golf day is different and we pride ourselves on getting it right for every client. Independent visitors are also made welcome at Handsworth booking through the pro shop we accept visitors Mon - Fri and Sun after 11.30am.

From M42 motorway Exit at Junction 9 and take A446 signposted to Lichfield. Pass the Belfry Golf Centre on your right and carry straight on for about 3 miles to Junction with A38. Take A453 towards Sutton Coldfield to second set of traffic lights. Turn right and follow A454 towards Walsall at second set of traffic lights turn left into Rosemary Hill Road. After 40 yards turn right into Park Drive (private road), travel over the bumps to the top of the road and turn left, clubhouse on the right after 100 yards.

The course was designed in 1908 by 6-time Open Champion Harry Vardon and later re-modelled by Harry Colt. There have of course been minor alterations since then but the main features remain with the exception of the 17th hole where the green in 2006 was moved into the lake. The course measures 6813 yards, an ideal length for a course that caters for golfers of varying degrees of proficiency. The holes are sporting and call for all kinds of play and the greens, are, in normal conditions, almost perfect. There are a fair proportion of good two shot holes, several drive and pitch holes and three one shot holes, a combination of

ingredients which make for ideal golf. The Club has over the years hosted many major tournaments both Amateur and Professional. These include the English Amateur, Brabazon and British Boys Championships, the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, the English Ladies Amateur and Strokeplay Championships and the Dunlop Masters Professional Tournament. Little Aston is a host venue for The Open Regional Qualifying Series 2013-17 and will host the Carris Trophy for England Golf in July 2015. Although a traditional members Club, Little Aston extends a warm welcome to Societies and Visitors throughout the year.

Labelled as Staffordshire’s Best Kept Secret, this golf course is a gem. At just over 6200yds, it’s not the longest course you’ll play but that’s not where this course’s merits are. As in most traditionally maintained golf courses, putting your ball in the right place off the tee with tree lined fairways is paramount here. At the end of the fairways you will find firm, fast greens to give this course a ‘links-like’ feel.

In 1927 Harry S Colt remodelled the course and extended it to 18 holes producing a magnificent golfing challenge. It has been described by Martin Hawtree as “classic golfing country”. Over recent years it has been an ‘Open Qualifier’, has hosted International Boys and Girls matches, been the venue for the Carris Trophy, EGU events, County matches etc. At 6510yards long off the white stones (Par 70) it isn’t a long trek but every hole gives a different challenge and clear thought processes are needed. Players must think where to place the drive or tee shot, fairways need to be hit and bunkers avoided to enable well guarded greens to be found in regulation. The 6th hole is the only hole without bunkers but has a dogleg over a track (part of an old racecourse) providing yet another problem. There is heather and some gorse on the heathland soil with many an oak tree to

contend with too - no water in play. There is no doubt that Whittington Heath is a club with character; the more you play the course the more you will want to. In the clubhouse and well stocked Professional shop you will find both the atmosphere and welcome friendly and helpful. The food available is top quality and well priced. It is a course to put on any “bucket/ wish list”. Wonderful drainage, thanks to a sandy subsoil, means the course is open and playable all year round with excellent greens throughout all seasons. A “halfway house” is staffed at weekends and for most Open events. Three practice areas and a putting green enable members or visitors to hone their golfing skills. A Heathland Short Course 4795yards (Par 68) is also part of the main course – great for the young to learn on or for the Senior to prolong their enjoyment of golf.

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.

El Chaparral Golf Club

Enjoying nature in all its glory while playing golf, breathing in the fragrance of the pine trees, listening to the songs of the birds and allowing yourself to be enchanted by the beautiful panoramic views - this is just one of the many attractions of El Chaparral, the Costa del Sol golf club set in the municipality of Mijas, and neighbouring the municipality of Marbella.

The personalised, courteous and professional attention offered by all of our employees is another characteristic which distinguishes El Chaparral. Equally outstanding is its club house, built in the Andalusian style and overlooking the sea, which provides additional services including a restaurant, live music, a golf shop, club repair, a conference room, a beauty parlour and a hairdresser. The club house is elegantly decorated and is equipped with luxury facilities with different atmospheres as well as a spacious terrace with unbeatable views of the golf course and the sea. Spectacular would be the word that best defines the sensation of playing at El Chaparral, which is capable of hosting any kind of top-level event, whether amateur or professional. The course consists of 18 holes set in unique and privileged surroundings on the Costa

del Sol. Close to the sea (700 metres from the beach) and surrounded by vast woods of Canary Island pines and native Mediterranean woodland, El Chaparral offers players what all golfers are searching for: peacefulness. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only course on the Costa del Sol with six par 5’s, six par 4’s and six par 3’s. It is not a very

long course (5,800 metres) and it includes a wide variety of holes which can be enjoyed by players of all levels. It is a demanding circuit which requires skill and precision, with greens which provide outstanding conditions throughout the whole year. Its ease of access, at just 700 metres off the N340 highway, places it right at the head of

Golf Valley in Mijas, which is a world-famous destination for golfers. El Chaparral has a top-class international golf school with highly qualified PGA professionals, each with their own teaching method, as well as the latest video and computer technology, whether for teaching beginners or for helping advanced players who wish to perfect their swing. The floodlit driving range is open every day of the year until nine o’clock in the evening. It was designed with all kinds of professionals in mind, who, due to a lack of time, can only enjoy their free time once they have finished work for the day. It has a practice tee made of wood, with two heights and space for 32 players. There is also a 1000-square metre practice green for approach and putt, making this one of the best practice areas in Mijas Costa. El Chaparral has become a benchmark for golf courses on the Costa del Sol thanks to its delightful surroundings, its impeccable facilities, its high quality of service and its good value for money. COSTA DEL SOL

Cabopino Golf Marbella Cabopino Golf is situated on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little marina of Cabopino. The course was designed by Juan Ligues Creus. The layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest.

COSTA DEL SOL

Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf we find the excellent facilities of the golf Academy and driving range. The driving range has a capacity for 60 players, with a depth of 250 mts, and 160 mts, wide distance markers, bunkers, and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practise session. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, third would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes thirteen and fifteen are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea. for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The ninth is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. The course has

been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a five minute drive from the 18th hole (or 19th hut) to Malaga Airport.
