Welcome to the North West & Cumbria Golf Guide Welcome to our latest edition of The North West & Cumbria Golf Guide which marks the staging of ‘The Ricoh Women’s British Open’ in the North West and at Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time. We look forward to the 39th staging of The Ryder Cup match being played at Medinah Country Club (Chicago,US) from 28th to 30th September. So how does The Golf Guide work? It is an opportunity for golf clubs to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who are planning a visit. At the bottom of each golf course page are the club’s contact details (Website/Tel No) together with any specific golf offers - some of which are exclusive to Golf Guide readers. The magazine is split into 5 areas. Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire & Cumbria. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found. A full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine, containing the telephone number & web site of every golf course in the North West of England. The North West & Cumbria Golf Guide is brought to you by Golf Guide Publications using a formula which has proved a huge success on the Costa del Sol for the past 5 years and since it’s introduction to the UK two years ago. In addition to The North West & Cumbria Golf Guide here, further editions have been added in Ireland and Yorkshire & The North East. A new Golf Guide was recently launched in The South of England & there are plans to extend to further regions in the UK in the next 2 years.

In addition to The Golf Guide itself, we launched ‘The North West & Cumbria Golf Guide Tour’ last year which proved extremely popular amongst all golfers. All events are played on top quality championship golf courses and the latest winners booking their places on a golf trip to Spain (February 2013) at Vale Royal (13th July) were Jack Brownrigg and Tom Cartwright and at Clitheroe (1st August) were Ian Walsh and Jon Dugdale. The winning pair from each event win a 4 day trip to Spain which covers flights, accommodation & 3 x rounds of golf on top quality Spanish golf courses, together with other golf prizes on the day. So please come along and experience the Tour in 2012 for yourself with your golfing friends. We still have tee times free for our last event of 2012 at Formby Hall on 4th October so please contact us to book your place and we will be publishing our Tour calendar for 2013 in our next issue (Winter) of The North West & Cumbria Golf Guide which will be out early December. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels from professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing calendar of events in the North West for 2012. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from early December so please keep a close eye out for it. All that remains is to thank you for your continued support & we hope to see you on the Golf Guide Tour soon. Happy Golfing!

Royal Liverpool Hole by Hole Guide

Contact Details Royal Liverpool Golf Club Meols Drive, Hoylake, Wirral CH47 4AL Telephone: 0151 632 3101 bookings@royal-liverpool-golf.com www.royal-liverpool-golf.com

Host venue to the 2012 Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Hole 1. Par 4. 429 Yards With a tee shot flanked by out of bounds on one side and the Clubhouse on the other, this is an extremely challenging hole which requires both accuracy and courage. A sharp dog leg to the right demands a well positioned drive as near to the corner of the practice ground as confidence will allow. The second shot is of some 190 yards to a green protected by a swale on the safer left side away from the out of bounds close on the right. Hole 2. Par 4. 372 Yards Played to the only green which remains from the original course layout, the Road hole at first glance takes on a high benign appearance but three newly situated bunkers at drive length will swallow any wayward tee shots. A drive positioned close to the left hand side of the fairway will offer you the best angle of approach to a well protected green which falls away from front to back.

Hole 3. Par 5. 535 Yards Threading a drive between the gorse to the left and the strategically positioned bunkers on the right, most players should look to play their second shots to the right side of the fairway from where they will get the best angle of approach to a two tier green. Be careful to check the pin position. Should you end up in the wrong part of the green, two putts will be a challenge. Hole 4. Par 3. 202 Yards Normally played into a crosswind, the ‘New’ is the first of Hoylake’s par 3’s and is surrounded by deep bunkers. A tip for newcomers to Hoylake is to take one more club from the tee and aim to the right hand side of the green. The extra club will help carry the cavernous bunker on the front right of the green and natural slope will swing the ball back towards the hole.

Hole 5. Par 4. 483 Yards ‘Telegraph’ is a very difficult driving hole with a bunkers left and right. The right side is further protected by extensive gorse to which the westerly wind pushes your ball. Nevertheless, the best line from the tee requires a drive close to the right hand side of the fairway. Any tee shot which is too cautious will mean a second shot played over a bunker which jealously guards the front left of the green. Remember to believe the yardage here as this hole always plays one club longer than you first think. Hole 6. Par 4. 433 Yards The first occasion you play at Hoylake you could be forgiven for wondering where to drive, as you are faced with an out of bounds hedge in front of you, but more perturbing is the fact it is some 190 yards away. So just take an easy swing and place one in the wide part of the fairway. Just to the left of the marker will do nicely. Well done! Now all that is left is a middle iron to the green.

FEATURED COURSE

Hole 7. Par 3. 198 Yards At ‘Dowie’, there is a lot to take in while standing on the tee. The wind is often coming from right to left and the pin position can make a big difference to your choice of shot. Bunkers front left and right protect a narrow green which will throw the ball from a less than perfect shot into complex swales. Hole 8. Par 5. 534 Yards The furthest part of the course away from the clubhouse, ‘Far’ has seen some famous players come to grief, none more so than the great Bobby Jones, who, on his way to his famous Grand Slam in 1930, took an 7 on this relatively straight forward par 5. Whatever you do, stay away from the bunker which protects the front right hand side of the green. It is very deep! Hole 9. Par 4. 393 Yards No matter how well or badly you are playing, one cannot help but enjoy the panoramic view which awaits on the tee at ‘Punch Bowl’. The Welsh hills and Dee estuary provide a scenic backdrop to the first of four holes which run along the shore. For the best line to the green, you are advised to favour the left side of the fairway with your drive. Be careful as the front half of the green slopes away from you. Hole 10. Par 4. 448 Yards A dog leg to the left which invariably plays longer than its yardage, ‘Dee’ is a demanding par 4. It could be tempting to take off some of the dog-leg when you are faced with 3 bunkers on the right of the fairway, but the new broken ground in the rough on the left makes that very dangerous. Once on the fairway, you will then be faced with a long second shot to a raised green which slopes forward from the back of the green. Take a tip: don’t be past the flag when the pin is in the middle or towards the back of the green.

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Hole 11. Par 3. 198 Yards Don’t be distracted by the beautiful scenery around Hilbre Island. Make sure you take enough club to carry the mounds which guard the front left hand side of the green. One thing to note is that the green extends further left than it looks from the tee. Hole 12. Par 4. 456 Yards Arguably the finest hole of the links, ‘Hilbre’ is a dog leg to the left. The big-hitters and the brave may try carry the bunkers protecting the corner of the hole but this is a lot to ask. Don’t overshoot the dog-leg as thick rough awaits. A long second shot is played into the prevailing wind to a green which will throw any shot veering to the right down into a hollow, from where it is difficult to recover. Hole 13. Par 3. 161 Yards ‘Rushes’ is a classic example of a par 3 which does not require great length to make it an interesting hole. The tee is elevated and set into the sand dunes with great views of the Dee Estuary. At first glance, there appears to be a little trouble but a wayward shot will leave an extremely tricky chip or bunker shot. Hole 14. Par 5. 576 Yards This is the start of Hoylake’s much admired... and feared stretch of finishing holes. A long par 5 which requires a drive towards the fairway bunkers on the left side and then demands a full wood to stand a chance of reaching the green. Beware of Farrar’s Folly, a grassy hollow at the front right of the green, affectionately named after a former Secretary of the Club. Hole 15. Par 4. 459 Yards Into the prevailing South West winds, ‘Lake’ at 459 yds is certainly one of the most difficult. A long, straight drive, avoiding bunkers at driving distance is necessary to have any

chance of hitting the classic MacKenzie green. A long second shot is played to a deep two tier green. Anything missing the green short left has the duel challenges of thick rough and tricky bunkers. Despite its name, there are no hidden water features to look out for. Hole 16. Par 5. 560 Yards Played around the out of bounds line of the practise ground, the tee shot should be aimed at the dog leg. From there you can either play safely to the left or skirt the out of bounds line, which will reward you with an easier 3rd shot to a long green set at an angle to the second shot and protected to the front by bunkers to the left and right. Hole 17. Par 4. 457 Yards Setting off away from the Clubhouse, this hole is named after the Royal Hotel which housed the first Clubhouse at Hoylake in 1869. A brand new green complex was created in 2010 and is incredibly difficult to hit with a long iron in hand. If you can keep your drive close to the bunker on the left you will have the best angle of attack to this well protected, long, narrow green. The green is one of the toughest to putt on, so accept a two putt and move on. Hole 18. Par 4. 456 Yards Bunkers right and left necessitate an accurate tee shot at this great driving hole. The second shot is played to an undulating green which has cleverly positioned bunkers which will allow flag positions to be tucked behind them. Don’t be too greedy as slopes will throw your ball off the green leaving you with a very tricky recovery shot.

Runaway Rory Plans Ryder Cup Glory For differing reasons, we should not be surprised by the names that have just been engraved on the Claret Jug and the Wanamaker Trophy. Ernie Els had a previous 3rd and 2nd in the 2001 and 1996 Royal Lytham Opens, and just as Darren Clarke showed in 2011, 42 years old appears to be a popular age to win the Open.

If this had been a relatively low key year for Rory McIlroy, his runaway victory at Kiawah Island in the final Major of the year, the U.S. PGA, merely reminded us all of his enormous talent and potential. At 23 years old, he is faster to a 2nd Major than Woods, Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones, Snead, Watson, Vardon, Braid or Taylor to name just a few of the golfing greats. Only Young Tom Morris, Gene Sarazen, John McDermott and from the modern era Seve Ballesteros were younger. McIlroy’s winning margin in both his Majors has been by an incredible 8 shots, and in 8 months time he will undoubtedly be a clear favourite for the US Masters. McIlroy is now set to dominate the game in a way that Tiger Woods previously did, and no doubt he will also start as favourite for the Gold Medal as golf makes its return to the Olympic fold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Just as the Olympic movement needed the vision of its founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, so too did the international golfing community need the energy of Samuel Ryder, a successful seed merchant who only took up the game in his 50’s to improve his health, to initiate what has now become Golf’s most enduring and enthralling match play event. Yorkshire and the North West has played its part in Ryder Cup history, hosting the event on

9 previous occasions at 6 of our most famous venues, all of which are featured in the current Golf Guide magazines. (Moortown in 1929, Southport and Ainsdale in 1933 and 1937, Ganton in 1949, Lindrick in 1957, Royal Lytham twice in 1961 and 1977 and Royal Birkdale twice in 1965 and most famously in 1969). The biennial event alternates between Europe and America and after the 2010 match at Celtic Manor, the 39th Ryder Cup returns to the USA and takes place at Medinah County Club, Medinah, Illinois, September 28th-30th. Captains Jose Maria Olazabal and Davis Love are the ideal pairing for they will ensure that the traditions of this great tournament are upheld and that the players play in the right spirit, hard but fair. The Americans have been buoyed by recent Major success in the shape of Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. And they can also count on in form Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar in their automatic 8. Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, the latter who has won the USPGA twice at Medinah, add great depth to the team, and Love who was arguably spoilt for choice when it came to pick his 4 Wild Cards, has elected not to select Rickie Fowler, rather he has gone for the experience of Steve Stricker and 7 times Ryder Cupper Jim Furyk, the big hitting Dustin Johnson and the pure putting Brandt Snedeker.

Whilst Lee Westwood and Martyn Kaymer have not been in top form this year, Rory McIlroy’s brilliant win will hopefully rub off on Team Europe. Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell, Paul Lawrie, Sergio Garcia, Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson have all enjoyed considerable success in 2012. Olazabal’s two Wild Card picks rather picked themselves, Ian Poulter, after his 3rd place in the U.S. PGA was a shoe in, as was the consistent Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, who is the only rookie on a very strong European team. With the enduring format of foursomes, fourballs and singles bound to deliver a series of nail biting moments, the final outcome is very difficult to call. Expect Europe to do well in the team formats and the USA to win the singles. Both teams look strong on paper, and factoring in a point or two for home advantage set against Europe’s hot streak of 6 wins in the last 8 Ryder Cups, it all leads me to predict that Europe will retain the trophy by the narrowest of margins after a 14-14 tie. REGIONAL NEWS

Major Players At Lytham St Annes Mini Links Eight times Major winner, Tom Watson (USA), recently visited Lytham St Annes and was delighted when he saw the Mini Links ‘loaded with kids who were clearly enjoying themselves on a layout suited to their abilities.’ Lytham St Annes Mini Links Golf Complex has been developed in partnership with Fylde Borough Council by local businessman and Managing Director of Atgolf.co.uk, Andy Tracey. Andy, who graduated from St Andrews University with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mathematics and Golf, often shared many University sporting moments including golf with the Future King, Prince William. Atgolf’s major aims and objectives are to promote the game of golf with a strong emphasis on junior golf development. Andy commented, ‘the Mini Links concept is a perfect way for beginners and juniors to sample golf in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere without the pressures of restrictions on age, ability or attire or high green fee costs. The course has been developed, well maintained and kept fully open even in the harshest of conditions with the aid of Head Greenkeeper John Peat. The course is perfect for both beginners and avid golfers with a new Pro’s tee introduced.’ Local dealership Lloyd Blackpool Mini has partnered with Atgolf.co.uk and is very proud to provide the Official Vehicle of the Mini Links, a fantastic new Mini Countryman. Andy commented, ‘we are very pleased to have the local dealership on board during this extremely exciting time. The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics are sponsored by BMW who in turn own Mini. It is quite fitting to have one of the major sponsors of the Games involved in golf before its introduction in the 2016

Olympics with the Mini and Mini Links Brands working extremely effectively together’. Atgolf.co.uk is very pleased to have recently signed with Dunlop. Dunlop Sport is owned in most of the world by the British-based company, Sports Direct International. Dunlop is an equipment brand that specialises in sports equipment and endorses clothing for Major Champion and Ryder Cup 2012 Vice Captain Darren Clarke (NIR) and Race to Dubai Champion and former World Number one golfer Lee Westwood (ENG). Atgolf.co.uk in partnership with Dunlop Sport provides FREE Dunlop Golf Equipment hire at Lytham St Annes Mini Links. Andy commented, ‘I am very pleased to have signed with Dunlop Sport. This will act as a major catalyst that encourages more people to take up the sport. The Mini Links has seen over 3000 juniors pass through the gates in less than a year with juniors able to play golf for as little as £2 with FREE Dunlop equipment hire.’ One of the World’s greatest sports events, the 141st Open Championship, arrived on the doorstep of Lytham St Annes Mini Links this summer attracting over 180,000 spectators from all over the globe. After shooting a level par 70 on the penultimate day of the Championship, Rickie Fowler (USA) and his partner travelled only 800 metres from Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club down the mini Links road to tackle the undulating fairways of the Par 3 course. Accompanying the pair was fellow American and PGA Championship 2011 Major winner, Keegan Bradley (USA). Travelling around in an audacious 10 ball, both Rickie and Keegan played with friends including caddie Steve (‘Pepsi’), Matt Cole and Tour Pro Mark Wilson’s caddie Chris P (Cripy).

Throughout the whole of The Open Championship, the Golf Guide in partnership with Atgolf.co.uk ran an exciting Nearest the Pin competition on the Mini Links with a fantastic prize of a free place on the Golf Guide Tour. Both Rickie and Keegan, after failing to win the prize after 18 holes took on the Mini Links and Golf Guide Tour challenge for the 2nd time in succession and came close but not quite close enough to win a place on the Golf Guide Tour. The following day saw a dramatic finale at The Open Championship. Prior to the last pair teeing off, Johan Elliot from Sportyard.com visited the Mini Links and brought his player and PGA Championship 2010 Major winner and former Number 1, Martin Kaymer (GER) for a relaxing round of golf before crossing the road to see one of his other players, Adam Scott (AUS), tee off leading The Open Championship. Martin brought friends including tennis star Andrea Petkovic (GER) who also tackled the Golf Guide Tour Nearest the Pin challenge but again failed to secure a place on the Golf Guide Tour. Remarkably, Karen Lee from Oxford won the Golf Guide Tour Nearest the Pin Competition sporting very interesting footwear. A big thank you must go to all the supporters of the Mini Links especially The Golf Guide, Dunlop Sport, Lloyd Blackpool, FBC, Managers and Pro’s including Rickie and PGA Championship Major Winners 2010 and 2011, Martin and Keegan. Congratulations to Rory McIlroy (NIR) who won the 2012 PGA Championship. We hope to see Rory on Lytham St Annes Mini Links in the near future. Andy Tracey MD Atgolf.co.uk

Lee Westwood Golf School

Could you imagine this at 18 years old… “You have just completed two years of schooling, where every day you played golf, reduced your handicap from 5 to 1, studied in a purpose built classroom at a golf club. You achieved a first class education allowing you to get into University and hung out with 21 other golf focused young players. You visited Spain twice in the winter, you met some of the greatest golf players in the world and regularly interacted with the current world number 4 Lee Westwood. You received a custom built PING golf bag presented to you by Lee, had a uniform sponsored by Dunlop and had a variety of guest speakers and visits to European Tour events including an inside the ropes experience. To top that off, you now are off to Florida to play on the Moonlight Tour and still aged only 18” imagine… Well that is the reality for one of the recent Lee Westwood Golf School graduates’, Nicky Tibbetts who has recently touched down in Florida! Lee Westwood said “it is great news that Nicky received sponsorship in order to play on the mini tours in Florida. I am extremely proud of my schools’ in the UK and am looking forward to seeing my first school in America at Errol Estate Golf & Country Club progress”.

You never forget a great teacher. That’s true whether it’s in the classroom or on the sports field. Okay, sometimes you need the benefit of hindsight to fully appreciate the value of such experiences, but if you are lucky enough to really connect with a teacher and what they have to say, it has the power to map out a future path to success.

a success” says Karl Morris, director of the Lee Westwood Golf School who joined the golf business from a corporate background. “We’re passionate about this business and we’re committed to doing what is 100 per cent right for our students - the results speak for themselves.”. They also run and manage the Darren Clarke Golf School in Ireland.

Essentially, that is the mission at the Lee Westwood Golf School, which currently has two centres located in the UK, one in the north and one in the south of England – at Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf & Spa in Portal and Stoke by Nayland in Essex respectively. For one half of each day an experienced team of full-time PGA professionals provide the necessary golf skills and guidance to help youngsters achieve their full potential and perhaps go on to a career in golf. The other half of the day is dedicated to education, providing a back-up plan in the form of a BTEC national diploma in sport to create a springboard to a more fulfilling adult professional life.

A total of around 80 students aged between 16 and 18 are currently enrolled in the schools. They arrive at the school accommodation on a Sunday evening and home again on a Friday evening. For every waking hour in between they are expected to work hard on and off the golf course in an environment designed to inspire and motivate.

“Many offer a golf school or academy programme, but no-one else has the support and partnership of Lee Westwood, nor has invested so heavily into making the business

The educational component represents an 18-hour portion of the working week and students are given a yearly timetable in advance. “They know exactly what to expect and what we expect of them,” says Morris. The syllabus equates to 420 UCAS points, equivalent to three A Levels at A grade. Morris adds proudly, “We’ve had students on our course who were struggling with their education and two years later were leaving us with the equivalent of three A Levels and off to university full of confidence.”

The golf programme is equally thorough. Students are coached in all aspects of the game and constantly performance monitored with regular skills testing. They also receive practical advice on sports psychology, fitness, diet and nutrition. There is even a full-time, on-site fitness instructor to put them through their paces. “These students live for their golf and we give them all the tools and all the knowledge they need in order to perform to the best of their ability,” explains head coach Michael Welch, “but they have to work hard in the classroom as well. We instill discipline and a sense of taking responsibility for their own actions. They learn right from the start that if their schoolwork is late then there is no golf for them. Obviously we want to produce great golfers, but we want them to leave us with good qualifications, too. It is important to have a Plan B in life.” “On average our golfers drop their handicaps by half on a yearly basis” Welch is the perfect man for the job in more ways that one. He was once the boy wonder of British golf, winning a hatful of prestigious titles including the British Boys, European Boys and the World Boys Championships all within the space of a few months, a feat that hasn’t ever been replicated. “I suppose I never really appreciated what I had or what I was achieving until many years later,” says Welch. A professional playing career didn’t quite pan out for Welch, but he considers himself fortunate that coaching has kept him

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

involved in the game of golf. “I love the job I’m doing now,” he says. “Working with these young lads and seeing them develop and grow as individuals is exiting and very rewarding. It’s great to be a part of this.” The students would no doubt concur, for this has proven to be an incredibly successful formula. With it being a residential set-up the coaches have the opportunity to develop a great rapport with the students and vice versa. The golf team this year won the British National Schools and Colleges Championship. The school itself boasts a 100 per cent retention rate and students are typically achieving over twice the national average in their school grades. “If a parent wants the best for their son or daughter they should come to us,” says Morris. “We are currently the best-kept secret in education.” Not for much longer, though. Morris says that the Lee Westwood Golf School is looking to expand not just within the UK but also globally. This September sees the launch of the first US school in Florida. And what of the man himself, Lee Westwood? “My advice to any youngster looking to take up the game has always been to get good tuition and proper coaching, but it’s also about enjoying the game. We offer all of that here,” says Westwood. “Golf’s given me a great life and to put something back is very important to me.”

The Lee Westwood Golf School also offer a wide range of tuition for adults, from the individual lesson through to corporate day group coaching. They even offer “tuition breaks” via its exclusive partner www. golfbreaks.com, fortunately the school lunches and bunk beds are replaced with a residential experience from the 4* venues! For more information on the Lee Westwood Golf School telephone 0844 879 3467 or visit the website: www.leewestwoodgolfschool.com.

Carden Park Shone as PGA Pros played for Glenmuir Crown

Golfers enjoyed sunshine for the highly successful Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship Finals held at Carden Park. The award winning hotel, golf resort and spa near Chester played host to more than 150 PGA qualifiers over four days who competed to win the £78,000 prize fund.

Hamish Ferguson, general manager of De Vere Carden Park, said: “We had fantastic weather and a great turnout for the tournament, held on our famous Nicklaus Course. It was an honour to join the illustrious list of venues that have hosted the championships and to show case Carden Park on an international stage.”

Gareth Wright from West Linton Golf Club in Scotland was declared the winner over 72 holes with an impressive result of 17 under par.

Earlier this year Carden was named Best Golf Resort / Hotel in the North of England in the Today’s Golfer Travel Awards 2011, voted for by golfers.

The PGA championship pitches the skills of club professionals from the UK and Ireland against one another in a series of regional qualifiers, culminating in the grand final which, this year, was played at Carden Park. The event also has added significance because through a points system it decides the Great Britain & Ireland team to play America in the PGA Cup, which is the club pros equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Representing GB&I in the PGA Cup ranks as one of the pinnacles of a club professional’s career - a special week in the life of a club pro where the cream of home pros line up against the very best of America’s. Down the years, the championship has been played at some of golf’s most famous courses including Royal Birkdale, Turnberry, Royal St David’s, Carnoustie and Prince’s, reflecting the prestige and standing of the tournament.

Situated within a breathtaking country estate, golfers at Carden Park have a wealth of facilities to enjoy including the two stunning championship courses - The Nicklaus Course and the Cheshire Course - and a driving range with 13 covered and eight uncovered bays. The four star hotel boasts 196 luxury bedrooms and suites, award winning restaurants and a sumptuous spa as well as a host of outdoor activities. Junior Summer Camp held at Pryors Hayes

A week of Hole in One’s at Houghwood!

Local Final Open Qualifying at St Annes Old Links

A successful first Golf Guide Junior Summer Camp was held at Pryors Hayes Golf Club (near Chester) in August during the school holidays where we enjoyed a rare sunny summer’s day and a full day of golf under the expert tuition of golf coach Roger Shutt.

What a week for Houghwood Golf members, Jeff Albin, Roy Cunliffe and Kevin Jones. All three members made a hole in one all in the same week! On Monday Jeff and his playing partners watched with glee as his ball rolled in on the 134 yard 2nd hole. On Wednesday congratulations were in order for Roy as he scored an ace over water to the 162 yard 8th hole. Thursday, the drinks were on Kevin Jones as he nailed a 6 iron straight in the 163 yard 4th.

We had a wonderful day’s golf on Tues 3 July for the 72 competitors playing 36 holes. The R&A were presented with a golf course in magnificent condition owing to the skills of our Greenkeeping team headed by Course Manager Stuart Hogg. Many people contributed to the success of the event, including our Professional Daniel Webster and his team and all the Club’s staff. The effort of the members who volunteered to be starters, scorers, buggy drivers, marshals, ball spotters etc was the ‘icing on the cake’ and it was very impressive to witness the diligence and enthusiasm of displayed by all concerned. There was also a large crowd following the competitors and the rain stayed away!

The youngsters worked on a full range of golf skills in the morning from long to short game with various skill tests to pass and after lunch in the marquee headed for the golf course to try to put into practice all the new skills learnt during the morning on the golf course itself. Thanks to all the children for being an excellent group to work with and congratulations to all the winners with particular congratulations to Tom Shone for winning our younger age group 6 hole competition and Sam Burgin winning our older age group 9 hole competition in the afternoon. We are already planning other events during future school holidays based on the enthusiastic feedback from the children & parents and so will keep everyone up-dated on forward dates etc.

Houghwood custom dictates that following a hole in one a bottle of whisky is placed on the bar for fellow members to enjoy. Although it is not unusual to see an invitation on the bar to enjoy a complimentary whisky, it is highly unusual for the bottle to be around all week! HOLE BY HOLE GUIDE

Formby Hall Hole by hole guide

venue for the last North West Golf Guide Tour event of 2012 - 4th OctoBer See page 15 for entry details

Hole 1. Par 4. 352 Yards Good opening par 4 to start with avoiding the bunkers of the tee is a must leaving you with a mid iron into a two tiered green, good chance for a solid par to start the round off with.

Hole 4. Par 4. 351 Yards A short par 4 but don’t be fooled danger is easily found here on a hole surrounded by water a fairway wood or long iron for position then a mid iron into the green with a carry of 60 yards over water.

Hole 2. Par 3. 181 Yards A mid iron into a green surrounded by six pot bunkers, keep an eye on the pin placement on this large two tiered green on club selection.

Hole 5. Par 4. 468 Yards A long dog leg left par 4 which is the second hardest hole on the course, water and bunkers are the concern with the tee shot then you are left with a long shot into a raised green, par is a very good score on this hole.

Hole 3. Par 5. 481 Yards A short par 5 with emphasis on the tee shot, with out of bounds all down the right you need to keep the ball in play longer hitters will be tempted to go for this in two shots but this is a risk reward with water and bunkers surrounding the green.

Hole 6. Par 3. 198 Yards Another par 3 surrounded by bunkers this hole usually plays a similar club to the second, plenty of room down the right keeps you away from the water hazard up the left hand side.

HOLE BY HOLE GUIDE

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Hole 10. Par 4. 301 Yards A short par 4 fraught with danger, for big hitters there is an opportunity to drive the green but the water tightens the landing area the further you go up the hole a mid iron is the safer option leaving you a similar club into a bowl shaped green. Hole 11. Par 4. 379 Yards Once again the tee shot being in play is vital on this hole with bunkers either side of the fairway hugging the left side is better as it shortens your approach on this dog leg left hole, a good tee shot leaves you with a tough shot into a green with water on the left and bunkers on the right, once again par is a good start for a run off tough holes ahead.

Contact Details Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa Southport Old Road, Southport Merseyside L37 OAB Telephone: 01704 875699 Email enquiries via website www.formbyhallgolfresort.co.uk

Hole 7. Par 5. 508 Yards A long straight par 5 with water down the left again with plenty of room down the right hand side whilst an easy lay up sets you up with a mid to short iron into a tough undulating green. Hole 8. Par 4. 395 Yards A tight tree lined tee shot on this par 4 leaves a mid iron into a tough green protected by two deep bunkers playing safe into the larger right side of the green is recommended. Hole 9. Par 4. 375 Yards A good tee shot is a must here as there is water all down the left side off the tee and could get blocked out by trees down the right, bunkers short of the green means a safer shot to the back part of the green is the safer shot.

Hole 12. Par 4. 461 Yards A long dog leg left par 4 again, keeping right is a must as you can be blocked out by the out of bounds and trees down the left handside there isa long approach left which again has the out of bounds down the left and water down the right. Hole 13. Par 3. 226 Yards A long par 3 with a large green protected by bunkers again, a solid par is a good score on this tough par 3.

Hole 14. Par 5. 585 Yards This hole isn’t called goliath for nothing a long par 5 which is just keeping out of the trees left side is the better side to open up your layup shot leaving you with a mid iron in to a sloping green from back to front, beware of the swirling wind. Hole 15. Par 4. 455 Yards The hardest hole on the course a tough long hole with a long iron into a green surrounded by water and bunkers, bogey isn’t a bad score on this tough hole. Hole 16. Par 3. 178 Yards A mid iron into a short par 3 but all over water a good strike is needed to get over, a large green is a good opportunity for a birdie. Hole 17. Par 4. 400 Yards A large fairway for your tee shot is on offer here then a tough shot into a green with water all down the right hand side. Hole 18. Par 5. 542 Yards A long par 5 to finish with water all down the right off the tee and for your lay up short of the ditch, water comes in from the left as well for your lay up so a good shot is required for your lay up leaving you with a mid iron into a large green.

Super 66 wins English girls’ title for Emily

Kashiwabara wins Junior Open at Fairhaven

Ellis crowned youngest ever English champion

Lancashire’s Emily Taylor shot a superb sixunder 66 in the final round to win the English girl’s championship at Sandiway, Cheshire.

A field of 123 competitors assembled at Fairhaven to play in the 2012 Junior Open. 68 different countries were represented and played out three rounds of competition before going on to spectate at The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Harry Ellis is the new English Amateur champion. He won the title, supported by abacus, by beating Henry Tomlinson 2 and 1 in a 36-hole marathon final that lasted ten minutes short of 11 hours after two thunderstorm stoppages.

A total of 68 nations made up the field at this year’s event and Asuka Kashiwabara, a 16-yearold from Miyazaki, Japan, scored a historic win in the 10th Junior Open golf championship at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes.

He is the youngest ever champion at 16 years 11 months and 28 days, beating the previous record set by 18-year-old Nick Faldo when he won at Royal Lytham in 1975.

She finished the event on five-under par, four shots clear of runner-up, fellow girl international Meghan MacLaren, and five ahead of Curtis Cup player Bronte Law. This was Emily’s last attempt at the title before she leaves junior ranks and she said afterwards: “This means everything to me, especially as it’s my last year. “I set this as my goal at the start of the season and it was something I really wanted. I’ve been second in the past and it was really nice to finish it off. “England has such a strong U18 section at the moment that to win it in this year is fantastic for me.”

Asuka is only the second girl to win the Junior Open. Her astonishing winning margin of 14 strokes at the end of 54 holes is also a record for the tournament contested by boys and girls, under the age of 16, from around the world. Asuka broke the women’s course record with a first-round 66 (eight under par) and she followed that with three more subpar rounds of 69 and 71 for grand total, a really grand total of 16 under par 206.

“I’m overwhelmed and exhausted,” said Ellis (image © Tom Ward). “I feel I’m in a dream but the whole week has been superb. I felt like pulling out after playing the Carris Trophy last week because I’ve played so much golf. “At 16, you don’t expect this sort of thing to happen. You see the likes of Rory McIlroy making the headlines but you don’t expect to add to the history of this event.

Sophie’s U15 victory is a club double

Practice pays off as Hollie claims U13 crown

Lee Westwood Golf School does the triple

Essex golfer Sophie Madden scored a double triumph for her club when she won the English U15 girls’ championship by a shot at Delamere Forest, Cheshire.

Practice paid off for Lancashire’s Hollie Muse when she became the new English U13 girls’ champion at Delamere Forest, Cheshire

The bank holiday weekend was a real success for the Lee Westwood Golf School, Michael Welch (LWGS coach & PGA professional) won the North Region Pro-Am at Crewe Golf Club with an impressive 3 under par 68, Sadie Davies (LWGS residential camper) shot a course record and Tom Johnson (LWGS graduate) won the Lee Westwood Golf School Junior Open!

Sophie is a member at West Essex Golf Club – and last year her friend and club colleague, Gabriella Cowley, won the national title.

The 12-year-old reaped the benefit of repeated practice rounds on the course to beat defending champion, Sammy Fuller of Surrey, by two shots.

“I wanted to follow in Gabby’s footsteps, we are really close friends and from the same club, so it’s great,” said Sophie, after she completed the 72-hole championship with a level par round and a nine-over par total.

Third place went to Worcestershire champion Lucy Walton, who scored a final round 74. Chloe Howard of Devon had the low round of the day with her one-over 73 and moved up into fourth place.

She finished one shot ahead of Alice Hewson of Hertfordshire, while Annabel Bailey of Nottinghamshire was third, followed by halfway leader Eloise Healey of Lancashire.

“I am just happy,” said Hollie, from West Lancashire. “I wanted this more than anything and I have practised all the time and come here for practice rounds.”

Friday 24th August saw the Lee Westwood Golf School (LWGS) host their first Junior Open at the Macdonald Portal Premier Golf Course in Tarporley, Cheshire. The course was in outstanding condition for the tournament, which hosted a field of 75 players from around the country including past and present students of the school and international players who had recently attended the schools residential training camp. The windy conditions and fast greens meant the golf course would provide a stern test for the young golfers, and fortunately the rain held off until the prize presentation. The conditions were overcome by many competitors to produce some fantastic scores. The overall winner was Thomas Johnson (pictured above) who shot an impress 71 (Level Par), he beat Hannan Mahmood on countback. Tom graduated from LWGS earlier this year and now qualifies for the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship finals later this year. The girls section was also fiercely contested with Sadie Davies coming through on top with a winning gross score of 72, (1 under Par) which took both the Junior Girls Gross and Nett (63) Course Records! 1. How to Find From Warrington & Manchester Take the M56 west and follow the signs for Chester. At Junction 15 (Ellesmere Port), join the M53 South to Chester (left hand lane). At Junction 12 (Hoole), the M53 becomes the A483. Take the next exit sign posted for A41 & A51 (Christleton & Huntington), and take the third exit on the roundabout (right) and follow the signs to the A41. After approximately six miles, Aldersey Green Golf Course is sign posted on the right hand side.

Set in 200 acres of Cheshire countryside, Aldersey Green Golf Club has a golf course that is envied by many but rivalled by few in terms of sheer enjoyment to play. Many of the fairways are tree-lined and narrow making accuracy from the tee absolutely pivotal to scoring well. The course is also home to 14 lakes so be warned that any stray shots can, and on many occasions will be punished. Packing a few extra balls in your bag might be a good idea! The course is superbly laid out and offers some fine panoramic views. Why not

enjoy them after your round by relaxing in the fine clubhouse, the perfect place for some post-match unwinding. Signature Holes: 3rd. Recently voted 2nd hardest par 3 in the country by top golf magazine. The Green has a lake at the back a bunker guards the right front corner, water to the left side, and two lateral water hazards run up both sides of the hole. A challenge for any golfer. The 15th Hole is a beautiful par 4 slight dog leg right, and features an original bomb crater. The raised green is protected by a stream / pond at the front and a steep wall of sleepers.

One of the most attractive elements of the Golf Course is that, although Haslington is close by and Crewe itself only some two miles distant, there are open vistas in every direction, with scarcely a building to be seen. The course is 18 holes occupying some 150 acres of rolling Cheshire countryside. From the men’s white tees it measures 6469 yards with a par and standard scratch of 71, consisting of 2 par 5s, 3 par 3s and 13 par 4s.

Each hole has its individual characteristics. The fairways are for the most part generous, but in some instances tight and tree-lined with

tall oaks often providing a difficult obstacle for the wayward drive. A number of holes are strategically designed to provide a testing second shot over or round a pond. The greens are well bunkered, some are particularly narrow and should not be missed on the wrong side. A “halfway house” by the 11th tee is used to provide light refreshments on selected competition days and weekends. Hole 8, Par 3, 159 yards. Great short hole! Nothing but accurate medium/short iron does on this tricky par three with bunkers right and significant drop on other three sides of green.

Set in 1000 acres of stunning Cheshire Countryside, Carden Park is the ideal location to enjoy a round of golf. The two Championship Courses offer two very different but equally challenging experiences. The Cheshire Course is reminiscent of the finest British parkland courses; set to the rear of the Carden Park Estate it offers stunning panoramic views across the Cheshire countryside to the mountains of Wales. A wealth of natural hazards makes this a highly technical course and will test your skills throughout. Building to a dramatic and

scenic finish, with tough 16th and 17th holes followed by the 18th tee atop sandstone cliffs overlooking the resort and Welsh hills. It certainly ensures a round of golf to remember. An average fourball can expect to complete the Cheshire Course in 4 hours. Signature Hole: The testing 351 yard par 4, 18th may only have a stroke index of 14 but don’t let this fool you. The elevated tee will take your breath away with the spectacular scenery across the Welsh Hills. Driver could get you in trouble. The perfect tee shot would be a 3 wood or long iron to land short left which in return would leave an approach shot into a generous green.

Carden Park is easy to find from the M6. From the South, join the M54 at Junction 10A, then onto the A41 towards Chester. From the North, leave the M6 at Junction 20A and follow the M56 and M53 to the A41 for Whitchurch. At Broxton turn towards Wrexham on the A534 - the hotel is 1.5 miles along on the left.

The Nicklaus Course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, it is a rewarding challenge, with several ‘double option’ holes such as the 7th and 15th which offer a choice of dual option fairways from which to approach the green. The Nicklaus course offers a scenic yet strategic test of golf where position more then length is crucial. Nicklaus Course 18 holes, Par 72 • 7045 • 6628 • 6302 • 5906 • 5211 H ole

As Jack said it certainly is “a thinking man’s golf course”. The half way house on the Nicklaus is passed twice so you will never be short of a snack or drink. An average fourball can expect to complete the Nicklaus Course in around 4 hours.

The testing 378 yard par 4 dog-leg on the 17th demands the utmost accuracy. This hole was chosen as the Nicklaus Signature hole for the challenge and the views it provides from the drive through the estate and from the hotel. Signature Hole: When major championships are played on the Nicklaus course the 17th hole provides the back drop for a fantastic grand stand finish. The back tee demands a great drive, you need to stay high to the right hand side of the fairway which would reward you with an approach shot over the lake to the elongated green. Be careful not to be short or this could cost you dearly.

Delamere Forest

6. How to Find From M6 Junction 19 take the A556 and head in the direction of Chester and after approximately 15 miles look for J & S Accessories. Take the next right turn at the Abbey Arms Public House. DFGC is about a mile on the right hand side of the road (opposite the entrance to Delamere Forest and the Station).

Designed by W H Fowler, Delamere Forest was founded in 1910, reputedly in a hunting field. The early list of members reads like an extract from the Cheshire Hunt register. It was the venue for the first Cheshire County Championship in 1921, an event held at the club on a further seven occasions, most recently in 2004. In 1967, Delamere forest was one of the two qualifying courses for the Open Championship when it was held at Hoylake. At that time Maurice Bembridge posted the professional course record of 63, which stands to this day. Despite the word ‘forest’ in its title, Delamere is a natural heath land course. Certainly trees are part of the strategy on

several holes, but in general Delamere Forest provides a glorious backdrop to the panoramic views from the higher parts of the course. The course provides a good but fair test for golfers of all abilities, combining challenging par 4s and 5s with strong par 3s where reaching the traditionally fast and sloping greens is only part of the enjoyment. Being constructed on a sandy base excellent drainage helps to ensure that golfers enjoy normal tees and greens throughout the year. Fowler’s design has ensured that each hole is both picturesque and thought provoking, making a visit to Delamere a memorable occasion for all the right reasons.

At Eaton we are very proud of our golf course which is often praised for its immaculate presentation and the challenge of its contoured greens built to USGA standards, which are fast, firm, and true. Beautifully situated beside the Shropshire Union Canal, it features a

wealth of mature oaks, a picturesque brook and several ponds and copses, all of which add to the golfing challenge and provide rich habitats for wildlife in abundance. 12th. This hole is a gem. Played properly it is relatively easy, make the slightest mistake and you may wreck your card. Longer hitters may take a fairway wood or even a long iron for the tee shot. Hit it as close to the right hand bunker as you dare, to leave a simple pitch across a large ditch to the steeply sloping green facing you. The green is protected on each side by mature Oaks, so drive on the left and you will face a tough decision - take on the trees, or lay up?

COME AND TRY EATON you won’t be disappointed. Join from 1st October and pay £150 until the end of the year. If you take up membership from 1 January 2013, the £150 will be deducted from the 2013 subscription. It has also been likened to Augusta’s sixth hole, there is a 50 metre elevation drop from tee to green through woodland down to a green guarded by bunkers and water left and right; it is a pleasure to play this hole.

There are few more glorious natural settings in Cheshire than this stretch of parkland surrounded by woodland of pine, oak and birch; the vibrant rhododendrons adding a splash of colour. The great architects Mark James and Steve Marnoch took full advantage of these many attributes when they created High Legh Park. Fairways turn both ways and there is a wonderful flow and variety to the course, with different length par-3s, par-4s and par-5s. It is a design that will stand the test of time. The greens have been constructed to the highest standard using USGA Green Specifications. The layered construction of each green ensures

optimum drainage and minimises damage to the greens. This helps High Legh to keep the course open all year round without the need for temporary greens. The greenkeeping staff take great pride in ensuring that the greens are kept up to their high standards all year round. 3rd. “The Belfry” is a challenging par 4 with water hazards comprising of two ponds between the tee and the green. Designed by James Braid, Mere is as famous for its beauty as it is for the challenges it presents. It would be hard to find a more picturesque course than Mere, with its parkland setting alongside the beautiful lake which gives the course its name. Mere offers cleverly sited hazards and some of the best greens in Britain. The 6,887 yard, par 71 course was created out of 150 acres of Cheshire parkland in 1934. Mature trees, rhododendron bushes and the lake add considerable charm to a day’s golf but they are also there to test you! Water, ravines and thick vegetation have been incorporated

into the layout so that care and accuracy are demanded on many holes. Sky Sports commentator Steve Beddoes has described Mere as ‘The Wentworth of the North’. The last four holes are particularly memorable. The 15th is a tough par 4 from the first stroke - a dogleg left from a raised tee with a carry of more than 215 yards over a stream. Three times open winner Henry Cotton named the par 4 16th hole as one of his favourites. The short par 4 17th has been described as a card-wrecker. The par 5 18th requires a straight tee shot from a raised tee to the top of a hill. A particular favourite with Colin Montgomerie on his recent visit.

find anywhere, not only when we have a big event, but on a day to day basis as we believe in value for money, and at our membership and green fee rates you’ll find it certainly is that. The Championship is a course of 2 loops; The front 9 are played on relatively flat meadowland, with generous fairways giving you the chance to pull the driver out of the bag without too many worries.

The back 9 is tougher and makes you think on every tee. The holes are more densely wooded with undulating fairways and carpet like greens. The Clubhouse has an impressive brasserie type bar area with sunny terraces that overlook the course. Signature Holes: 13th, Par 4. S.I. 1 hole, and an absolute brute. Only the very longest hitters will reach this hole in 2, with a right to left fairway that goes uphill and downhill, before having a sharp incline to the large undulating green. 17th. Peover

From M6 junction 19, exit onto the A556/Chester Road towards Northwich/Chester. At The Smoker traffic lights turn left onto Plumley Moor Road. Golf course is after 2 miles on the right.

Peover Golf Club is a challenging parkland course, covering 165 acres of varied terrain, and is considered one of the country’s sternest tests for any golfer. The course is situated in picturesque surroundings where the course and its fairways make the most of their natural features without exploiting them. The ponds and the Peover Eye River that runs through the course are havens for wildlife, but attractive as they are, they have no respect for the wayward drive or that misplaced approach shot. There is an excellent mix of holes varying in design and character with many doglegs

and water hazards including the Peover Eye River which three of the fairways cross. The undulating landscape has been enhanced with thousands of new trees which, with the existing mature trees and woodland, give aesthetic appeal as well as privacy, safety and space between holes. Signature Holes: Hole 10, Par 4. The feature hole. A drive between 2 sycamores will run down an undulating fairway. Although the river protects the left hand side, the green is generally unprotected. Hole 14, Par 5. Only the brave will take on the Peover Eye, leaving the green reachable in two.

We can also provide a golfer with the best short game practice facilities around. Back in 2008 the club was awarded a grant from Sport England which was used to construct the Chip & Pin Short Game Centre. This consists of two large greens, one that is a synthetic pitching green and the other which can be used to improve your chipping and bunker play.

You will always be well looked after when you visit Poulton Park from when you first arrive at the club to when you travel home, our aim is to make you smile! Signature Hole: Hole 7, Par 4, 417 yards. This is our signature hole and what a hole it is, destroying many a good scorecard. Hitting the fairway is essential if you are to hit the green in regulation. Many play this as a par 5 laying up in to leaving a short pitch over the hidden front ditch onto a green that’s slopes from back to front.

Memberships available from £480 and get 18 months for the price of 12. We do 5,6 and 7 day membership with competitions on Saturdays and Sundays. Societies and visitors welcome. 9 hole green fees for just £7. Call 07971928939 for more details or email freddy@myprogolfer.co.uk

Our 9-hole Arderne Course presents a superb challenge for golfers of all levels.

15th Hole, Par 3, “Platt’s Wood” At only 157 yards off the yellow tee this isn’t the longest or most difficult of holes, but it is the sheer height of the tee above the green, possibly 50 feet, that makes it stand out. Club selection is tricky as the ball can be greatly affected by the wind. 18th Hole, Par 5, “Your Round” A great par 5 to finish. A tough drive to a fairway that slopes right to left. Then either a solid lay up or big second can get you close enough for a birdie chance. However, the huge green in front of the impressive clubhouse will always give you pause for thought.

Continue for one mile and turn right at the crossroads onto Warford Lane. The Wilmslow Golf Club is 400yds on the left.

This Cheshire Golf Club was founded in 1889 and is located just outside Wilmslow in the North West of England. The fine parkland golf course measures over 6,635 yards and the Clubhouse offers a comfortable environment both before and after golf with magnificent views over the course. The Club has hosted major professional tournaments and has been a regional qualifying course for The Open. Whilst the course is a fine test of golf for the low handicapper it also provides an enjoyable experience to golfers of all ability.

Rated one of the finest inland courses in the North West of England, always in firstclass condition and playable in all but the most extreme of weathers, The Wilmslow Golf Club is a perfect haven from the stress of business and the cares of daily life. Toughest Hole: Hole 8. Par 4, 437 yards (competition tee). S.I. 1 A handsome and strong par 4. The drive is the key. Obviously the road and trees on the left must be avoided but shots are easily lost in the bunker and trees on the right. Crossbunkers threaten many second shots, and the green repels all but the truest of approaches.

Facilities Bar, Restaurant, Trolleys, Lessons, Pro shop, Putting Green, Chipping area and extensive practice ground. Electric buggies available for hire. Visitors personal buggies not permitted Course Information 18 holes, Par 72 • 6635 • 6311 • 5828 H ole

setting before and after your game, and features the Wychwood Suite - the perfect base for Corporate days and client entertaining. Signature Holes Hole 7, Par 5. A tough hole that requires nerve off the tee, your drive must clear a nature reserve onto split fairways either side of a stream. Long second shot to a narrow target means it may be safer to lay up. Hole 17, Par 3. A long hole when played off the back tees, it requires a full carry of almost 200 yards to clear the water. The elevated position of the tee box makes the hole appear shorter than it is. A visually stunning hole.

value for money, home-cooked food; fully stocked bar for that indulgence at the end of your round; and best of all it won’t cost you the earth giving you a day to remember that will make you want to come back again and again.

It is easily accessible, only 1 mile from junction 19 of the M60; is on a main road, the A576, not hidden away down side roads; has ample secure free parking; is a good length, 6443 yards par 71 for men and 5545 yards par 73 for ladies; drains well and so is open for play more often than not; has a fully stocked Pro shop with the latest clothing and equipment at reasonable prices; in-house caterers producing quality,

Signature Hole: Hole 18, Par 3, 176 yards This has to be one of the great finishing holes in golf. The green sits imperiously above the lake on a “hog’s back” with the prevailing wind of the water. Stand on this tee with a good card in your pocket and strike the ball to the centre of the green. Most courses have a card wrecker, but when it is the 18th and as picturesque as this one, there’s something special about it.

a gently undulating parkland course that presents an enjoyable challenge to both high and low handicap golfers. Providing ‘year round’ play, the course is maintained to the highest standards using the latest equipment.

Famous for our ‘Open Champion’, Richard Burton, who was the last ‘Club Professional’ to win the Open Championship, we have been home to many great golfers including Joanne Morley, currently on the Ladies professional circuit.

Signature Hole: 4th, Par 4. “Bridle Path”. With the tee only a few feet from the river Mersey and the green right next to the bridle path, this hole demands accuracy, judgement and great nerve. A drive left of centre will leave a pitch to one of the smaller well bunkered greens on the course. A tough shot especially when the ground is firm in summer time.

Widely acclaimed as one of the finest inland courses in the North of England, Worsley Park Country Club is a classic championship design that uses the full potential of the natural terrain including seven water hazards. The course is set on gently rolling parkland, formerly the Duke of Bridgewater’s estate. Worsley Park has played host to the PGA EuroPro Tour in 2004 and the European Challenge Tour from 2005 to 2007. Designed by European Golf Design in association with Michael King, the course meets the highest standards with greens and

tees created to USGA specifications. The strategic positioning of the bunkers with clearly sighted tees demands careful thought on how to play each hole Worsley Park Country Club also features comprehensive practice facilities including a long game practice area, short game facility, and putting green. Signature Hole: 7th, Par 3, 177 yards Hole 7 is the course signature hole, a par 3, and requires a precise tee shot to negotiate the two water hazards that make this both a challenging and picturesque hole. An allweather buggy path is a recent addition to further enhance the playing experience.

Lancashire Introduction

Lancashire With two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty full of dramatic scenery and quiet lanes, the summer months provide the perfect opportunity to explore Lancashire’s undiscovered countryside.

restaurants and inns with brilliant beer gardens. From Morecambe Bay potted shrimps to Bowland beef, Lancashire’s skilled chefs know how to make the most of the abundant store cupboard on their doorstep.

This Royal Duchy is full of ancient castles and picturesque stone-built villages. It’s also home to some of the country’s favourite seaside resorts, including Blackpool - Europe’s biggest and brightest, and the perfect destination for families. Make sure you work up an appetite too, as Lancashire is packed with award winning

Just six miles from the bright lights of Blackpool, Lytham and St Annes-on-Sea, Fylde, are worlds apart in both character and atmosphere. The dual seaside towns are nestled along a picturesque stretch of coastline lined with well tended lawns, a boating lake and pretty parks. The rolling sand dunes of St Annes-onSea and the Ribble Estuary adjacent to Lytham

make a safe haven for more than 250,000 migrating birds that flock here in winter. Some of the world’s most famous golf tournaments take place at Lancashire’s celebrated Links Courses, which stretch along the renowned Lancashire Golf Coast. Luckily for any golf enthusiasts out there, many of the best courses are also open to the public, so you can test your ability with the challenges that links courses are famous for – tricky winds, sand dunes, small, deep bunkers, uneven fairways and thick rough.

Open Championship Course Royal Lytham & St. Annes

Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club Venue for The Open Championship 18-22 July 2012 and the Walker Cup in 2015, Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club sits between the two seaside resorts of Lytham St Annes and Blackpool, and is one of the most unique venues to host the British Open. A truly magnificent course situated in the heart of a stunning Victorian estate, and one which locals are extremely proud of.

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Open Championship Course Photographs by Alan C. Birch

The layout of Royal Lytham & St Annes has remained faithful to the original created by the clubs first professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes were made in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, the pre-eminent course designer of the time to make recommendations for improvement. Over the next four years he repositioned some of the greens and tees added numerous bunkers and lengthened the course. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, surrounded as it is by suburban housing and flanked by a railway line, but it has a charm all of its own. It is a Links course that is a long way from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on one’s game and was aptly described by Bernard Darwin, the leading golf writer of the thirties, as ‘a beast of a course, but a just beast’. He went on to say that ‘no one could fail to be impressed by its difficulties, which sets a golfer just about as ruthless as an examination as any course of my acquaintance’. Ryder Cup Captain Mark James wrote “ And Lytham was set up magnificently in 2001 (for the Open Championship), perfect for the world’s premier golfing event. I do not think they could have prepared that course better. It was a perfect combination of width of fairways, length of rough and pace and quality of greens. It should be used as a model for future Opens. Everyone who knows

Royal Lytham & St. Annes

Lytham knew that it would be the one course where Tiger Woods would not have a big advantage because of the distance he hits, as there are relatively few holes where you can carry the trouble. Tiger could not tame it”. It is renowned as a course on which it is hard to scramble a good score, after all, there are 200 bunkers peppering the fairways and

surrounding the greens. It may not be the longest of courses but it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are required. As Darwin wrote, ‘hit your ball to the right place and the way to the hole is open to you, but hit your ball to the wrong place and every kind of punishment, whether immediate or ultimate, will ensue’.

Fairhaven is not only a beautiful place to play golf but fully lives up to its designation as a ‘Championship’ course originally designed by James Braid. Professional golf at Fairhaven started back in 1934 when the course played host to the ‘Penfold’ Tournament. The course is an unusual blend of links and parkland which is relatively flat. This makes it not too strenuous to walk around and allows complete vision of each hole from tee to green. It is consistently maintained and presented to

the highest standard, presenting a fair challenge to golfers of all abilities, featuring the ‘risk & reward’ elements of negotiating the 118 deep revetted bunkers for which Fairhaven is famous. 1st, Par 5. Listed and described in ‘Golf World’ as one of the top ten opening holes in Great Britain & Ireland. In many ways this past Open Championship final qualifying course’s opener is the perfect par 5. 18th, Par 5. A classic finishing hole, it can reward the brave and punish the nervous. For long hitters a good line is over the right edge of the left-hand bunkers.

Hurlston Hall

From M6, exit at junction 26 onto M58 Skelmersdale/Liverpool. Exit junction 3 to St Helens/Southport. At roundabout take 3rd exit onto A570/ Rainford Road heading to Southport/ Ormskirk. Turn left at A577/Park Road. Turn left at A577/Church Street. Continue onto A570/Southport Road, turn right at Hurlston Lane.

Classical golfing values underpin the philosophy of Hurlston Hall designer Donald Steel. His desire to blend his courses imperceptibly into the surrounding landscape is never more evident than here. The emphasis of this 18 hole, 135 acre, par 72 course is enjoyment. The strategic use of natural elevation, well placed traps and the finely sculptured contours of the greens present an inspiring challenge. There is always the opportunity to card a personal best, however the slightest hint of a hook or slice could result in a battle for respectability. The beautifully manicured practice putting area and a driving range fully

equipped with Power Tee© capability provide the perfect pre-match limber up. To satisfy your undoubted appetite the clubhouse provides a diverse range of dining options with which to round out the perfect day of golf. 10th, Par 4. An extremely difficult par 4 with a pond down the right hand side of the fairway and then a pond in the middle of the fairway which you have to carry for your second shot. The green has two tiers with a huge bunker on the right hand side. One to remember! 15th, Par 4. From the tee the views are rather special. Down the gentle slope this fairway goes right and then left into the largest green on the course.

From M6, junction 33. At Junction 33, exit toward Lancaster(South) / A6. Proceed through traffic lights at Galgate and continue on A6 past Lancaster University. At Traffic lights (Boot & Shoe public house & Booths supermarket) turn left along Ashford Road. At next roundabout turn left onto Ashton Road (A588). Continue along Ashton Road, Lancaster Golf Club is 1 mile on the right.

Designed by James Braid, the renowned golf course architect, Lancaster Golf Club has built a reputation of being one of the finest courses in the north west of England. Stunning views of the Lakeland hills, Trough of Bowland and the Lune estuary add to the enjoyment of the “Lancaster experience.” With two loops of 9 holes and a par of 71 Lancaster is a fair test of golf for both the accomplished & intermediate golfer. Lancaster has recently hosted the Lancashire County Championship and is a popular venue for the annual Pro-Am held in June. Enjoy the impressive grade 1 listed clubhouse that dates

back to the 14th century and hosts a Dormy house that caters for up to 18 guests, all in ensuite rooms. Residential golf packages, weddings and functions can be booked at the golf club. The Caterers, Bowland Village Inns, provide 1st class cuisine using fresh local produce. Hole 18, Par 3, ‘Ashton Home’, 178 yards Much admired in Braid’s day when it was 25 yards shorter. However the problem remains the same. How best from a high tee, to carry a ravine of rough, water and sand, to the green below which lies under the Clubhouse windows. It’s not surprising that this gem merits inclusion in any anthology of the best holes in Britain.

Five minutes from the city centre... ...a million miles from the office.

8. How to Find Exit the M55 motorway at junction 4, signposted North Shore and A583. Keep left and move into the inside lane. Go straight over the roundabout (pass a B & Q store on the right), at the first set of traffic lights turn right, then immediately left down Peel Road. Continue until you reach a T-junction, turn right onto Ballam Road, and the club is 1½ miles on the left.

Laid out by 1902 Open Champion, Alex Herd, and re-designed by James Steer in the 1940’s, at first sight Lytham Green Drive is a pleasant tree-lined course, which although within a mile of the Irish Sea still retains parkland characteristics. The greens are small by modern standards, and very well bunkered. This parkland course also has links-like undulating fairways that can fool the eye when it comes to judging distance. Despite its modest length, the course demands a wide variety of golf shots and will make you use just about every club in your bag, with its assortment of different challenges and

approaches to most greens. This formidable little test was officially recognised when it was used as a Final Qualifying course for the 1974, 1979 and 1988 Open Championships held at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. The first hole could start the round off on the wrong foot. This 398-yard gentle dog-leg has an out of bounds on the right, trees to the left and a well-bunkered green with a pond at the rear. Two well-placed bunkers on the right of the fairway will catch any crooked drives. The 13th hole is named “Harold’s Beck” after the club’s famous professional and renowed club maker Harold Beck.

MOReCAMBE

From M6: Leave the M6 at junction 34 and head into Lancaster on the A683. Follow the signs for Morecambe and carry straight on through two large roundabouts. At the 3rd “shrimp” roundabout(Toby Pub) bear right onto Broadway. Keep straight on until you reach the promenade at the Broadway Hotel. Turn right onto promenade for half a mile until you see the clubhouse elevated on your right.

Morecambe Golf Club is a private members club situated on the north-west tip of the Lancashire coast. The course is just over a mile from the centre of the popular coastal resort of Morecambe, over-looking magnificent Morecambe Bay and 3 miles from the historic city of Lancaster. Justifiably recognised as the gateway to the English Lake District, Morecambe offers the ideal stopping off point for visitors to this picturesque corner of the British Isles. As a golfing destination, Morecambe Golf Club has gained an enviable reputation for both the quality of its clubhouse facilities

and 18 hole golf course offering visiting golfers a wholehearted welcome. Time after time visitors comment that “...they never realised this little gem of a course existed!” 4th, Par 4, 440 yards (competition tee) Morecambe’s signature hole. A testing double “dog-leg” with out-of-bounds all the way down the left. A good drive will carry the corner to give a better line into the green but hit it too well and two sand traps await. The green is very tight, sandwiched between the out-of-bounds and a steep bank. Four hungry bunkers collect any unfortunate kicks from the right hand banking.

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Merseyside Introduction

Merseyside Merseyside comprises of the boroughs of Liverpool, Knowsley, Wirral, Sefton and St Helens, and as the name suggests straddles the River Mersey. The county has been the birthplace of many famous names throughout its history, with Liverpool’s bustling port at its heart Merseyside was always a cosmopolitan place for both artist and artisan. From TV legends Cilla Black and Tom Baker, to sporting heroes like Wayne Rooney and Stephen Gerrard, the area has long been a cultural hotbed and no-one typifies this more than its biggest export: The Beatles. To this day a source for much of the area’s tourism,

The Beatles went from humble beginnings at The Cavern Club to global acclaim in the 60’s and many favourite spots for tourists today owe their fame to The Fab Four: the original Cavern was demolished in the 70’s but an exact replica was built in 1984 even using some of the bricks from its predecessor and this houses The Beatles museum; Strawberry Fields cemetery also lies within the city. Historically Merseyside has grown from a rural community to a bustling urban sprawl, and much of this growth is down to the county’s docks. The city of Liverpool, Birkenhead and Bootle docks were all

massively enriched by the slave-trade in the 18th century and by ship-building until more recent times, as well as being the first step on the road to America in the 19th and early 20th centuries: the ill-fated Titanic was constructed in Liverpool’s ship-yards. With Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status the area has seen large investment recently, which can only add to its draw for tourists; although a county that can boast the biggest band in history, two of the nation’s biggest football clubs, the world’s largest Anglican cathedral, Tate Liverpool and Wayne Rooney probably needs little help.

Open Championship Course Royal Birkdale

Royal Birkdale Golf Club Royal Birkdale, one of Britain’s finest golf clubs has been voted the No 1 course in England and is among the best in the World. Having previously hosted two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, the Women’s British Open and on nine occasions the Open Championship. Looking ahead it is proud to be hosting in 2013 The Senior Open Championship for the first time and The Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship returns again in 2014.

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Open Championship Course Photographs by Alan C. Birch

Royal Birkdale

The stunning coastal resort of Southport is host to the finest links courses in England. This is the home of Royal Birkdale, for many golfers, quite simply, the best of all the great golf courses to have staged The Open Championship. Among the many great courses along the Northwest coast, Royal Birkdale stands out as a perfect example of links golf. It is currently voted by Golf Monthly as the best course in England and the 4th best course in the British Isle and in a survey commissioned by Planet Golf for Golfing Digest it was listed as the 18th best courses outside of the United States.

The growing stature of the club was acknowledged in 1951 when the King gave his permission for the club to be known as The Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The course has been the stage for many great golf championships including the Amateur Championship, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup, the Ryder Cup and the Women’s British Open. On nine occasions the greatest championship, The Open, has been played here, the most recent in 2008. In 2005, the club was the venue for both the Amateur Championship and the Women’s British Open which Royal Birkdale will host again in 2010.

The Club was formed in 1889, starting life as a nine hole course. In 1897 the decision was taken to move to Birkdale Hills where an 18 hole course was constructed. The course underwent considerable changes in the mid 1930’s when the current Clubhouse was built. There was further restructuring in the 1960’s and in the early 1990’s all of the greens were reconstructed and redesigned. In preparation for the Open Championship in 2008 and as a part of the Club’s on going improvement there have been some significant alterations carried out from 2005 to 2007 which have enabled the Club to retain its position as one of the finest links courses.

The Championship Course now measures 7.180 yards. Visitors generally play the yellow tees which at 6.381 yards is a test in itself even for the most accomplished golfer. The wind, whistling down the fairways when it comes from the sea, adds to the challenge. Each hole runs through a landscape of high dunes, the fairways are flat and fair and from the tee there is generally a clear view of the task ahead. Each hole is memorable, from The Open Championship tee the 13th measure 498 yards, one of the longest par 4s in championship golf.

Even in the early days, the Birkdale Club was forward-thinking, with the members voting in favour of allowing ladies to use the links from 1889. Indeed, one of the first tournaments held was the 1909 Ladies’ British Open Match play Championship.

Visitors to the course can walk in the footsteps of many of golf’s legends, among them Open Winners, Peter Thomson, a double winner at Royal Birkdale, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson. On the 16th hole, a plaque commemorates Arnold Palmer’s great shot in appalling weather conditions, on the way to his Open win 1961.

The clubhouse was designed to resemble an Ocean Liner cruising through the sand hills of Birkdale. North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Open Championship Course Royal Liverpool

Royal Liverpool Golf Club The Hoylake links can be, by turns, beautiful, uplifting, awe inspiring and, on occasion, souldestroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so, and they lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain. It has been the host for both The Walker & Curtis Cups in the past together with 11 Open Championships. It is with pride that it will be hosting The Ricoh Women’s British Open for the first time in 2012 and looks forward to The Open Championship returning again in 2014.

North West & Cumbria Golf Guide

Open Championship Course Photographs by Alan C. Birch

Built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon, which was established just a few years earlier. Robert Chambers and George Morris were commissioned to lay out the original Hoylake course, which was extended to 18 holes in 1871. This was also the year in which the Club was granted its Royal designation thanks to the patronage of His Royal Highness The Duke of Connaught. For the first seven years of its life the land still performed its original function, doubling as a golf course and a horse racing track - indeed, echoes of this heritage can be found today in the names of the first and eighteenth holes, Course and Stand, while the original saddling bell still hangs in the club house. Once the horses had been dispatched to pastures new Hoylake began to take its place in the history of golf in general and of the amateur game in particular. In 1885 the links hosted the first Amateur Championship; in 1902 the first international match between England and Scotland, later to become the Home Internationals; and, in 1921, the first international match between Great Britain and the United States of America, which we now know as The Walker Cup. In fact, it is Royal Liverpool Golf Club’s contribution to the amateur game that has set it apart from all other clubs in England. Although, at the end of the nineteenth century, it was the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews that took on the role of the governing body in golf as the game developed, it was at Hoylake that the rules of amateur status were laid down. Ironically it was John Ball, who was to become the Club’s greatest player, who almost fell foul of them. In 1878, when he was just sixteen years old, Ball had finished tied for 4th place in the Open Championship with Bob Martin of St Andrews. Although Ball lost the play-off for fourth place the following day there was still a money prize due to him from the purse. The sum involved was only one pound but John Morris advised the young John Ball to put the money in his pocket. It was this incident, recalled seven years later, that came back to haunt

Royal Liverpool

Ball when he wanted to enter the Amateur Championship. Ball had accepted prize money and therefore was technically a “professional”. The rules were, however, diplomatically but conveniently adjusted to enable Ball to play. John Ball’s influence on amateur golf, together with that of Harold Hilton who was also a Hoylake player, cannot be over emphasised. Between them they dominated the amateur game of that era and the pair was also a major influence on the professional game, each of them winning the Open Championship as amateurs. John Ball won the Amateur Championship eight times between l888 and l9l2 and was runner-up twice. He won the Open Championship in l890, the first Englishman and the first amateur to do so, and also took the amateur title the same year. Harold Hilton’s record was just as impressive. He won the Open twice, in l892 (the first year the Open was played over 72 holes) and again five years later, making him the only amateur apart from John Ball and Bobby Jones to win the title. His victory at Hoylake in 1897 was marked 100 years later by the creation of a new, annual Harold Hilton Medal tournament open to amateur golfers aged 30 or more and handicap 5 or less. Hilton also won the Amateur Championship four times, was runner-up on three occasions and won the US Amateur Championship in 1911, the year in which he also held the British title. The man was obviously no slacker - in the same year he still found time to become the first editor of the new Golf Monthly magazine. No history of Hoylake would be complete without mention of the legendary Bobby Jones. In 1930 the club was privileged to host his winning of the Open Championship, a victory that would become the second leg of his remarkable Grand Slam - the winning in the same year of the Amateur and Open Championships of both Great Britain and the United States. Shortly afterwards, a mere twenty-eight years old, Bobby Jones found himself with no golfing peaks left to conquer and he retired from the game. Much time has passed since then, but the Hoylake links, despite their at first glance flat

and benign appearance, are still very much among the toughest and most demanding tests of golf. Work is currently ongoing and almost finished on the links to improve the playability of the same for players of all standards. This work is being carried out under the direction of the eminent Architect Dr. Martin Hawtree. In July 2006 the fabled mighty winds did not blow. But there was no denying that another mighty champion was born... in the shape of one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods.

Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club is a great 18 hole course, famous not only for its welcome to first time visitors, but for its striking panoramic views towards Manchester and beyond. The inward nine holes are particularly demanding (especially on a windy day) with some difficult driving holes through heavily wooded areas. Special care should be taken on the 5th, 11th and 16th holes. The course was founded by long time cricketing pals Tom Mayall and Andrew Molyneux, and celebrated its Centenary back in 2002. Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club has certainly taken giant steps in the quest to produce a

top quality golf course, with excellent facilities and staff to deliver those aspirations. Facilities The developments range from 2 new holes being designed and constructed to enable the club to play 18 holes during a United Utilities pipeline project, a Professional who ‘went back to school’ and achieved full playing privileges on the Senior European Tour and a Manager with almost 30 years County playing experience. All of this adding to the existing assets of a vibrant Club which welcomes Societies, visitors, wedding and anniversary functions and provides a wide range of entertainments.

Exit Jct. 2 from the M53 and follow the Upton By-pass (A5027) onto Frankby Road (B5139) before turning left onto Hillbark Road (B5140). Turn right onto Montgomery Hill (B5141), this road leads onto Caldy Road (B5140). Then turn left onto Croft Drive East and left again onto Links Hey Road.

Playing at Caldy is one of the most rewarding golfing experiences one can enjoy on the beautiful Wirral Peninsula. Golfers from the UK and abroad are always welcome to share the Club’s challenging course, vast Practice Ground and Excellent Clubhouse facilities. From the often breezy cliff top holes, breathtaking views can be enjoyed over the River Dee Estuary towards the three Hilbre Islands and the mountains and coastline of Wales. In contrast, the heathland inner holes offer a more tranquil rural vista towards Thurstaston Hill and adjacent farmland. This glorious combination of links

and inland holes make for a memorable game for golfers of all standards. Hole 3. Par 4, “Sands of Dee” A superb dog-leg right. The fairway sweeps around two sets of bunkers well placed to catch both short and long hitters. A good tee shot will leave a demanding approach to a well guarded green and a stunning backdrop over the Dee Estuary. Hole 6. Par 4, “Donga” An extremely challenging hole, the last one along the cliff edge. Rough and out of bounds over the cliff on the left make the tee shot tight.

Formby

From the Motorway Network at the junction of the M57/M58 take the signposts to Formby. On the A565 from Liverpool turn left at the 2nd roundabout (with BP station) towards Formby Golf Club, Formby Point and Freshfield station. Immediately after the station turn right into Golf Road and enter the club through the automatic barrier.

Set in the sand dunes and pinewoods of Formby the terrain ensures that accuracy is always at a premium. Heather protects much of the rough and caution is definitely required whether playing off the tee or in approaching the well protected greens. This is a course of contrasts. Formby has always regarded itself as a top amateur course though it has been used for the Open Championship on 3 occasions (1924, 1971 and 1996). The Amateur Championship has been held here on four occasions, the most recent being 2009. The winner Matteo Manassero is the youngest ever winner of the championship at 16 years of age.

Hole 7, Par 4, 368 yards (yellow tee) This is such a great hole but needs some thought. To hit a good approach to this sloping green your tee shot ideally needs to be central at the top of the hill. With your approach we’d advise trying to leave yourself below the flag stick giving you an uphill putt. Hole 12, Par 4, 385 yards (yellow tee) Regarded as one of the best holes on the course. A left of centre tee shot will leave a good angle to approach the green. There is a large bunker on the left side of the green and the main trouble is short, so make sure you take enough club to allow you a possible birdie opportunity.

Hewn from marshland, six miles south of Southport and at the heart of England’s Golf Coast. Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa features a fine 18-hole course and a challenging 9-hole course which is ideal for experienced golfers and beginners alike. The 18-hole course hosted two events on the Challenge Tour, the 2004 ADT English Seniors’ Open, and

in 2009 staged its first EuroPro Tour event. Formby Hall’s 18-hole lay-out features a series of testing holes protected by water and well-placed-bunkers. Water, in fact, can be found on 16 out of the 18 holes. The 16th is a picturesque yet extremely testing par 3, with a 170-yard carry over water, and 6 well placed greenside bunkers waiting to catch any errant tee shot leaves very little margin for error, and a Par-3 on the card is true reward for selecting the right club. The Resort enjoyed a £15 million development in 2008 which has resulted in the completion of a stylish new 4-star 62-bedroom hotel and luxury Spa.

Hesketh

Hesketh is at Cockle Dick’s Lane which is off Cambridge Road. Cambridge Road is the A565, the main road between Southport and Preston. The turn off to Cockle Dick’s Lane is almost 2 miles North of Southport Town Centre along the A565. To get to Southport from the M6, take J26 exit and continue along M58 until the Southport exit. Follow the A577 and then the A570 through Ormskirk to Southport.

Hesketh Golf Club in Southport is set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport’s premier residential area - Hesketh Park, & is the town’s oldest golf club, founded in 1885. Standing alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, the clubhouse dominates the golf course, and the surrounding district. The course is at the northern end of southwest Lancashire`s sand dune system, which is the home of so many great golf courses. Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club`s earliest days, and the course is regularly used as a final qualifying course when The

Open is played at Royal Birkdale. The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes; whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. 15th, Par 4. A blind tee shot over a large sand dune looks imposing. The ideal line is the church spire. With large sand dunes covered in rough on the right and left a straight tee shot is a must. An accurate approach shot is then needed to avoid the pot bunker which guards the right side of the green.16th. Without doubt the most picturesque par 3 on the course. A long iron is usually needed to a green surrounded by bunkers and sand dunes.

Hillside Golf Club The Clubhouse, Hastings Road, Hillside, Southport, PR8 2LU Telephone: 01704 567169 secretary@hillside-golfclub.co.uk www.hillside-golfclub.co.uk

11. How to Find

Hillside

Hillside Golf Club is located to the south of Southport Town Centre, just off the A565 (Waterloo Road). From the M6 turn off at Junction 26 onto the M58. Follow the A570 Southport signs off the M58. From the A570, follow the A565 south, then turn off onto Hastings Road by Hillside Train Station.

A round of golf at Hillside is a truly memorable experience and many visitors consider the course equal to anything the Open Championship venues have to offer. To sample links golf at its finest, ensure Hillside is on your schedule. From the white tees the course at Hillside measures just over 7,000 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. From the blue tees the course is a more manageable 6,558 yards. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. After playing

the course, Greg Norman wrote to the Club saying that “The back nine were the best in Britain”, while Jack Nicklaus described the course as “A wild looking links”. 11th, Par 5. Many regard this as Hillside’s signature hole, certainly the view from the tee is worth lingering over, on a clear day the fells of the Lake District can be seen to the North. But it’s also a stern test that’s often played into the wind. 16th, Par 3. This is one of the best par 3’s you will play in England. It’s quite a long way but is often played down wind. A Mackenzie splits the green into two tiers - no bunkers required!

The view from the tee is worth the green fee alone. A 50ft drop in elevation from tee to green & unpredictable wind directions make club selection here a little tricky. A large undulating green which is protected by a large left hand side bunker accepts a well struck tee shot with anything from a 3 wood to a wedge and two putts gives the golfer a great sense of achievement.

HOUGHWOOD

Leave M6 at Junction 23 - Follow signs for A580 Liverpool At 3rd set of lights turn right onto A571 to Wigan (Waterside Inn on your right) Follow this road to Billinge till you reach a mini roundabout. Turn right into Crank Road, go over a hump back bridge and start to climb the hill. The golf course is now on your right hand side The entrance is located on the right between a stone barn and a bungalow. Houghwood was constructed during 1994/95, amidst some 132 acres, and has magnificent panoramic views over the Lancashire plain and the Welsh hills which makes Houghwood an interesting course to play. At par 71 and 6374 yards for men, and 5341 yards for ladies, it provides a stimulating and enjoyable test for golfers of all handicaps. The large greens built to USGA specification are probably the finest in the area and a permanant track allows the use of the large fleet of buggies and trolleys the whole year round. At roundabout take 3rd exit onto A565/Liverpool Rd. Turn left at Bradshaws Lane.

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a true championship links course, with first class facilities to match. The course is set amongst the dunes on the North West coastline and is another of course designer, James Braid’s great creations. The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain.

The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze, profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide you with a challenging and immensely enjoyable experience. Hole 16, Par 5. “Gumbleys”. Certainly the feature hole on the course. A straight tee shot is required towards the sleepers some 300 yards away. A good drive leaves a blind second shot over a 20ft high bank of sleepers. On reaching the brow of the hill, you will see a long narrow green in front of a high links dune. This very picturesque hole demands respect, offering a birdie opportunity – but many cards have been wrecked here.

Wirral Ladies’

Exit the M53 at junction 3 and follow the signs for Birkenhead. Follow Woodchurch Road (A552) and turn left onto Storeton Road (B5151) which merges into Ingestre Road then Talbot Road and finally Bidston Road.

Facilities

Wirral Ladies’ is a delightful, undulating heathland course combining heather, gorse and natural woodland. At around 5,000 yards this compact course can be played in a little over three hours, making it a perfect venue for a half day outing, corporate day or for those with limited time to spare. This historic venue was originally created in 1894 for the wives and families of Royal Liverpool members. The course was designed by local lad Harry Hilton, twice a winner of the Open including at his home club Royal Liverpool in 1897. His clever design offers a subtle challenge which is about so much more than how far

you can hit the ball. The course was recently given a four star review and described as “a short but fine test of golf” in a national golf publication. The course occupies the highest land on the Wirral Peninsula with sandstone bedrock and this geological feature, together with the considerable investment made by the club in drainage improvements, means that the course drains quickly after heavy rain and the full greens are normally in use all year round. The recently refurbished locker and bathroom areas have improved facilities for members and visitors alike and a warm welcome awaits in the clubhouse bar and dining room.

Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green, Trolleys, Lessons, Pro shop. The Clubhouse has a well known reputation for delicious home made cakes and confectionary; lunches, daily specials and afternoon teas are also available.

invite courageous fairway woods and crisp iron shots. Greens are subtle, firm, fast, and deadly true. The links has been used as an open qualifying course and will host the English Amateur Championship in 2012.

The Championship links of over 6,641 yards has been laid out over the sand-hills west of town, touched by some of the great classical golf architects, but mostly moulded by Nature herself. Hazards consist of heather and bent; whin and broom; heroic bunkers and sandy wastes. Fairways are always wider than they seem from the tee, and having been laid with springy Cumberland turf,

Hole 13, ‘Hogs Back’, Par 5, 468 yards This ‘short’ par 5 is thought to be Silloth’s signature hole. The drive across heather and gorse is to a flat fairway. The second is through a narrow gully to an elevated ridge, which falls away sharply to heather on the right and left. The angled slope up to the plateau green deflects all but the most accurate approaches. A four is a delight; a five is an invariable relief.

Ulverston

The Club is situated close to the delightful village of Bardsea in the south of Cumbria. For visitors coming from the M6 leave at Junction 36 following the signs for Barrow and South Lakes along the A590. Follow the A590 to Ulverston upon which you should turn left on the A5087, 300 yards after Booths Supermarket situated by the Shell garage. After a few miles take the right turning just after you pass the Manjushri Institute. The club is 400 yards up on the right.

With spectacular views over Morecambe Bay, and the Lakeland Fells in the background, Ulverston Golf Club is lucky enough to boast one of the most picturesque golf courses in Cumbria. Set in the Furness Hills, it is surprisingly quite flat and easy on the legs, although it measures a considerable 6261 yards with a par of 71 from tee to pin over eighteen holes, so stamina is a useful quality to have. It is set on mature, undulating, partwooded parkland, and was redesigned by H.S. Colt, a World renowned leading golf course architect and part of the famous triumvirate of course designers, so visitors

are assured of a most enjoyable, challenging and hopefully rewarding round of golf. Signature Hole: Hole 18, Par 4 ‘Conishead’ The final tee is close to the highest point on the course and offers splendid views. The Old Man of Coniston can be seen in the north, Conishead priory to the east, with Morecambe Bay and Blackpool Tower to the south. This dogleg right requires a good drive with sufficient carry to reach a plateau beyond the marker post. Any shot right of the trees could be OB. The second shot is just as difficult to a severely sloping green, with a pair of bunkers on the right, which often gather in the short ball played to the pin.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol Golf Holidays

Costa del Sol Spain The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports. In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor. The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
