This North West Golf Guide is split into 6 areas - Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cumbria & North Wales. You will find a comprehensive listing of all the golf courses at the start of each region. The Golf Guide is an opportunity for golf clubs to feature their course, products and services they provide. The aim of the magazine is to give enough information for any golfer or party planning a visit to the area to select courses they wish to play. Each golf course page provides images and details about the course, full contact details and any special offers.
Our Golf Guide Tour is approaching its 9th season, with 16 pairs of golfers experiencing the Golf Finals in Spain and the winning pair in Spain will enjoy a trip to Fancourt, South Africa sponsored by Chaka Travel. The Golf Guide Tour aims to offer some of the best courses at great prices, and 2020 is certainly on track, with Open Qualifying venues, Ryder Cup venues, and a trip to the home of golf - St Andrews. The Tour has events in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales! In addition you can win superb prizes at each event courtesy of our sponsors: Callaway, Club Individual, Halewood wines and spirits and many more. The individual tour events are a stableford pairs competition, the winners of the first 3 events will all win a trip to Spain and therefore will qualify for the Race to Fancourt Final. The remaining 13 places will be decided by an Order of Merit table. Scoring is as follows: 10 points for 1st place, 9 points for 2nd, 8 for 3rd and so on. There are also 2 points for every event you attend. The finals are on the Costa del Sol, including flights, accommodation and 3 rounds of competitive golf at top quality Spanish courses. INTERVIEW
Tony Q’aja

Tony Q’aja Interview The man responsible for the Golf fashion revolution By Rob Brooks @golfnation We recently caught up with Tony Q’aja at his new HQ in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. We interviewed Tony about the fashion impact he made on the European & PGA Tour’s as well as his plans for the future. How did you first become involved with golf, and what was the main factor that persuaded you to enter the golf market? I became involved with golf via some personal styling I did for a sports psychologist (Jamie Edwards) who was used at the time by ISM (Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler’s company). Chubby always used to comment on how well Jamie dressed and wanted to know who was making his suits? Chubby then got in touch with me and asked if I could make some bespoke
suits for him. This resulted in Darren Clarke (who Chubby manages) commenting on how well Chubby dressed, then Darren got in touch asking me to do the same for him also. Prior to my involvement with Darren, he would spend approximately £70,000 a year on clothing and rarely got any compliments on how he dressed. As soon as I started styling Darren and making his suits, suddenly everyone wanted to know why he looked so good. He was that impressed with the feedback he was getting from the public/media he then wanted me to make a full wardrobe for him. Darren then asked me: “If this is what you can do for me off the course, then what can you do for me on the course?” So from that day forward, Darren wanted me to make his golf trousers.
Where did the inspiration come from for all your innovative designs? For example, the side slits you pioneered on golf trousers? When I initially started working with Darren, it wasn’t uncommon at the time for tour players to supply their own trousers. When Darren asked me to make him some trousers I said to him, give me a couple of weeks to do my homework and I’ll have some samples for you. As a non-golfer I started researching golf trousers and was amazed by how plain and basic golf trousers were, without any specific advances on a normal every day pair of trousers. I also noticed that the players were rooting around in their pockets a lot (looking for markers), which led me to creating a marker
INTERVIEW
North West Golf Guide
This procedure led me to introducing my bespoke service online with a simple process of designing your own trousers and polo shirts. Phase one will be introduced this season, which is a step-by-step guide on the website for designing your own trousers and polo shirts. Phase two which will come at a later date, will be a 3D viewing experience of what you have created to make sure you’re happy with the look.
Darren Clarke
pocket. I also noticed they crouched down a lot on the greens (reading putts) which led to me creating the side slits to ease the tension to allow the trousers to flow. Darren loved the designs, which were completely new and unseen in the world of golf at the time. Once Darren was seen on tour wearing your trousers, what reaction did he get from the players and did you end up working with any other players as a result? At that point in time the trousers I was making for Darren were a massive step up compared to what the other players were wearing in terms of fit/flare/colour/design etc, so it created a lot of interest from other players. On the European Tour I worked with: Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Soren Hanson, Miguel-Angel Jimenez, Ricardo Gonzalez & Thomas Bjorn. On the PGA Tour I worked with: Scott Piercy & Phil Mickelson (in conjunction with Callaway Golf). Can you talk us through the process from making initial contact with a player, to him wearing your clothing at a tournament? Players would see me at tour events on a regular basis and were familiar with the work I was doing with Darren. I would meet a player at the tournament or with them at home. I would find out details of their current sponsorship deals (for polo’s and knitwear) to establish if they wanted branded or unbranded items. I would assess their current range of clothing,
go through fabrics with them, look at colours, design/fit (fitted/relaxed fit, pending physique), establish what would suit them and what they felt comfortable with wearing, then I’d measure them up, produce some samples and go from there. I would produce one item for the players to test to make sure the fit was right, then if any minor alterations/tweaks were necessary this would be done prior to wearing it at a tournament. This was all new to the tour at that time, but once the concept started to grow on the players, they became more adventurous and styles became bolder. You are about to re-launch Q’aja Golf this year, what are your plans and are you excited about being involved in golf again? Yes, I’m very excited about becoming involved in golf again. I’ve been asked by lots of clients (past & present) when am I coming back, so I’m looking forward to launching my new range. I’ve been working on lots of new ideas in my absence. On past experiences, I can’t compete with the major brands in the ready to wear market, so I’ve gone back to my roots concentrating on my bespoke service, but enabling a wider reach through the modern phenomena, the Internet. I’ve always had many clients in the US who through simple communication order bespoke trousers and polo shirts that generally fit well and generally comment that they’re the best golf outfits they’ve ever had.
You’ve also created bespoke golf clothing for many celebrities, can you tell us how that came about? Being involved in the celebrity world came about initially from being asked to provide clothing for certain celebrity golf days. I’ve been approached by event organisers who want their event to stand out and be seen to be making an effort to use a leading golf clothing brand. Certain celebrities have taken a liking to the clothing and have then contacted me for a personal service. Overseas interest in the celebrity world caught on through the Dunhill Links Championship on the European Tour, Samuel L Jackson was the first Hollywood star I worked with. Darren Clarke introduced me to Sam; we met in the Old Course Hotel at St Andrews. After initially greeting each other, Sam said” “Ahhhhh so you’re the guy who does all these fancy pants and things?” To which I replied “Yes, so you’ve heard about me then?” Sam replied “Yes, i’ve heard plenty about you, all the guys are talking about all your cool stuff” to which I replied “so, you’re an actor aren’t you?”. Then we both

INTERVIEW
When supplying players on tour with clothing, how much clothing do you supply each player with? How often? And what’s the process involved? Clothing I supplied to tour players varied player to player pending status and profile. Some players would get 20 outfits a year allowing for enough rotation event to event, the more high profile players would get 50 outfits a year. If a player was away for a three-week stretch (for example) they would often take six pairs of trousers (more neutral in colour) that they could wear ten different coloured polo shirts, which would lend itself to easy rotation.
Graeme McDowell
cracked up laughing and ending up getting on really well with each other. Sam asked me to start making his golf clothing straight away and also asked me to supply the polo shirts for his annual golf day. Alice Cooper attended Sam’s golf day and liked the shirts, shortly after he got in touch with me wanting clothing for himself. With the emergence of the ‘Modern Golf Athlete’ and with more emphasis on fitness and more sportswear than ever being worn by Pro’s and Amateur’s, do you think the ‘Classic Golf Look’ we’ve been familiar with over the years is dying out? The big sports brands introduced clothing to ensure they didn’t lose interest to other brands and made sure in the process that their players became obliged to wear it as it part of their contract, thus making it difficult for private companies to compete.
I think it’s a good time for me to get involved with golf again as many other smaller private companies have taken a step back as the sportswear giants have effectively manipulated the market into sportswear. I’m giving the people who still like to be different, the chance to still be different, as an alternative to the sportswear look. How can the golfing public get in touch with you to buy your new clothing once you’ve launched it? www.qajagolf.com info@qajagolf.com Twitter: @tonyQaja @theclubhouseexl Do you plan to get your new clothing line on tour again? I would welcome a return to the tour, subject to being approached by the right players to fit the brand and also on the right terms.
Your most famous client was Phil Mickelson, can you tell us how you ended up working with Phil and the work you did with him? A golf fashion editor in the US, who was a fan of Q’aja, introduced me to Phil. He told Phil he could possibly benefit from my input from a style and fit point of view. I arranged to meet Phil at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill; during our first meeting we struck a rapport with each other straight away as we exchanged ideas/views on clothing. Phil at the time was kind of getting a hard time from the press for the way he looked on the course, so he was open to discuss new styles/looks. He found that the polo shirts he was currently wearing were uncomfortable especially in hot weather and didn’t meet his expectations, so the choice of fabric was a key element for him. I made some samples for Phil to try in a specific fabric and in a specific shape to accentuate his athleticism. In terms of the look and colour choices, Phil has quite a reserved outlook on what he wears so it was a gentle transition, but as we progressed he became more adventurous. Phil allowed me to create the whole look and package. When he tried the shirts for the first time he reacted by calling me up straight away saying they’re the best polo shirts he’s ever had. The polo shirts I created for Phil were in conjunction with Callaway Golf. Phil recently sent me a gift, which was one of the shirts I made for him which he signed wishing me all the best, we’re still good friends stay in touch.

Preston Golf Club Golf Charity Day held 26th August 2019 My name is Amy Fletcher, Junior Captain of Preston Golf Club. When I was appointed as Junior Captain, I expressed a wish, which was approved by the golf club Council, to hold a Charity Golf Day to raise funds for YoungMinds. YoungMinds are an organisation who support young people and their families when they are suffering with some form of mental illness. Statistics show that 3 children in every classroom suffer from some form of mental illness which is quite a staggering figure. You can learn more at www.youngminds.org. The golf event was to include young people within each team. Therefore, each team consisted of a junior golfer, a lady, a gent and a senior. Teams came from other local clubs to support the event. The weather was kind to us and all who took part expressed how much fun they’d had, also enjoying refreshments halfway round. The event was made more memorable when our Lady Captain’s husband, Ed Crewdson, holed in one on the first hole. Ed in support of the event and accepting the challenge from his wife the Lady Captain, wore a pink skirt, raising further funds for the event by people sponsoring him. Myself and Lady Captain matched Ed in team skirts, with our senior player of the team remaining traditionally British with a Union Jack shirt and flag. This
was Ed’s first ever hole in one having played the game for 55 years. With Ed’s excellent start to the round and some consistent play by the team throughout we ended up victors with a score of 94 Stableford points. Money was raised in various ways. There were 18 hole sponsors from members businesses, team entry fees, raffle ticket sales, auction of 4 ball vouchers, donations from members, family and friends on my www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Amy-Fletcher25. page. And finally, Barclays Bank who matched up to £1000. I wrote to and visited many local businesses for support with raffle prizes and was overwhelmed with the response. Together with members and our club professionals raffle donations, we ended up with 54 prizes. I would like to thank all who took part on the day and all those above whose financial contributions in various ways has helped raise a total of £6,222. Quote from Alice Clarke, Community Fundraising Assistant at YoungMinds “We are so grateful to the Junior Captain, Amy Fletcher, and to Preston Golf Club for organising such an amazing fundraising day for YoungMinds. Thanks to her hard work and enthusiasm, she has managed to raise a phenomenal £6,222!
“While awareness of mental health is growing, there is still much work to be done. Young people today face a huge range of pressures affecting their mental health, including exam stress, bullying and concerns about body image, in an increasingly uncertain world. And often for those young people who reach out for help, it is much too hard to find. “Together, we are changing this. We are fighting for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered and have the resilience to overcome life’s challenges. But we would not be able to carry out any of our vital work without the support and generosity of our amazing fundraisers. So to everyone at Preston Gold Club, we just want to say: thank you!” Quote from Preston Golf Club Captain Greg Watson “We are so proud of our Junior Captain Amy for organising a fantastic event. The positive comments received from all who took part were just deserved for all the effort and hard work that she has given to the event A staggering total of £6,222 is superb and I am sure will benefit many young people in need of the work that Youngminds carry out. Thanks also must go out to our membership who got behind Amy and supported her fully. “WELL DONE AMY!”

We run the ladies classes on a monday night throughout summer and have seen 5 of the ladies who were brand new to golf at the beginning of the year, end up joining our growing ladies section at the golf club. Cheshire Introduction

Cheshire Cheshire is a diverse county, marked by its canal networks and its industrial history - notably silk in Macclesfield and of course the salt in Northwich. Perhaps the jewel in Cheshire’s crown, however, is the city of Chester. Nicknamed ‘Capital of Style’. Chester was originally settled by the Romans in the First century AD and is surrounded by Roman Walls (all walkable) and features a vast Roman Amphitheatre in the centre. Chester’s history is long and rich. The fact that the River Dee runs through Chester gives it extra character. Many festivals are held in Chester throughout the year including folk & fringe festivals, literature and racing at the ancient Chester Races. But don’t miss out some of the other market towns like Macclesfield,
Congleton and Knutsford, which all have their own unique charm. Contemporary Cheshire has much to offer the visitor, with designer shopping outlets at Cheshire Oaks, to Chester Zoo, to the famous Jodrell Bank 76m Lovell radio telescope and Science Centre to the awe inspiring Blue Planet Aquarium. Rural Cheshire is today a pleasant and sought after location to live but it offers more than that to the millions of visitors who come every year to appreciate one of the most diverse counties in the United Kingdom where it is h ome to more millionaires than anywhere else in the country. From a golfing perspective, with over 100 courses to choose from, you are spoilt for choice in Cheshire.

BIRCHWOOD
Birchwood Golf Club is ideally located less than a mile from Junction 11 of the M62. Leaving the M62 at Junction 11 proceed to the first roundabout and take a right. You will then come to a series of roundabouts, go straight over the next 3 roundabouts, passing Birchwood Business Park on your left hand side. At the next roundabout the Golf Club is signposted taking a Right turn. Birchwood Golf Club is located next door to Carphone Warehouse.
Welcome to Birchwood Golf Club, Warrington one of the finest and friendliest golf clubs in the county of Cheshire. Our very picturesque 18 hole championship standard course was designed and built in the 1970’s on 240 acres of rolling parkland. It has an abundance of unique features, the various lakes, water hazards, bunkers and tree lined fairways adding to the golfing challenge. The fantastic undulating greens that have a reputation for being the best in the area adding further to a very pleasurable golfing experience. Birchwood offers a challenge to all levels of golfer with a par of 71 and a standard
scratch of 72 off the white tees the 6596 yards course provides the player with a variety of shot making opportunities which will test the use of all fourteen clubs in the bag. Our course provides a fair test of golf where course management and not just shot making ability is the secret to a good round. The club is forward thinking with a terrific atmosphere in the clubhouse on competition days, yet also respecting the traditions of the game of golf. It is also an excellent venue for weddings, parties and conferences whatever your need, please dont hesitate to contact the club to see what we can do for you.

How to Find
CREWE
From North, M6 Junction 17 Turn right onto the A534 over the motorway bridge, follow this road through traffic lights and turn left at roundabout. Follow A534 to the next roundabout and turn left for Haslington. In 1.5 miles at the centre of the village left turn into Waterloo Road opposite the Broughton Arms, follow this road straight through into the visitors car park.
One of the most attractive elements of the Golf Course is that, although Haslington is close by and Crewe itself only some two miles distant, there are open vistas in every direction, with scarcely a building to be seen. The course is 18 holes occupying some 150 acres of rolling Cheshire countryside. From the men’s white tees it measures 6469 yards with a par and standard scratch of 71, consisting of 2 par 5s, 3 par 3s and 13 par 4s. Each hole has its individual characteristics. The fairways are for the most part generous, but in some instances tight and tree-lined with
tall oaks often providing a difficult obstacle for the wayward drive. A number of holes are strategically designed to provide a testing second shot over or round a pond. The greens are well bunkered, some are particularly narrow and should not be missed on the wrong side. A “halfway house” by the 11th tee is used to provide light refreshments on selected competition days and weekends. Hole 8, Par 3, 159 yards. Great short hole! Nothing but accurate medium/short iron does on this tricky par three with bunkers right and significant drop on other three sides of green.

Founded in 1910, Delamere Forest was the fifth golf course designed by the distinguished architect Herbert Fowler. It is widely regarded as one of the finest traditional heathland golf courses in England. The club’s current rating as the best inland course in Cheshire and 56th in England by Top 100 Golf Courses is well deserved. Situated in the heart of rural Cheshire but with easy access, Delamere features rolling fairways interspersed with heather and gorse, crowned by fast, subtle greens which are typical of Fowler’s early designs. As a result the course offers a fair but tough challenge to visitors and members alike.
Casual Golfers, Societies & Groups - All Welcome. Sample our excellent course and facilities.
In 2012 the club took the momentous decision to strengthen the course and reinstate its original heathland character. The renowned golf architects Mackenzie and Ebert who had recently completed the remodelling of Royal Lytham and St Anne’s for the Open Championship were commissioned to carry out the task. Every bunker has been returned to the original Fowler design and all greens have been increased in size to provide additional options and run-off areas. As a result the century-old character of Delamere has been reinstated and a new Blue Course of over 6600 yards including 8 new tees is available for County and National events.

Signature Holes: Many people ask what the signature hole is at Hartford – the answer is all nine, but perhaps the favourite for many is the 187 yard 7th hole. It has been written about the 7th as “this hole would not look out of place on any championship golf course”. It has also been likened to Augusta’s sixth hole, there is a 50 metre elevation drop from tee to green through woodland down to a green guarded by bunkers and water left and right; it is a pleasure to play this hole.

Situated in Stockport where the Cheshire Plain meets the High Peak, the village of Mellor and its golf club are steeped in history. Lying on the western hills of the Pennines where Derbyshire and Cheshire meet, Mellor is an interesting mixture of moorland and parkland golf. Magnificent views across the Cheshire plain and Derbyshire hills serve as a backdrop for a course to test the skills of all golfers at all levels. The opening holes, although not long, provide an immediate examination of shotmaking ability and are set among mixed woodland including oak and elegant silver birch. Holes seven to twelve now assume the true
moorland character and the golfer who plays to his handicap on these challenging holes will be well satisfied. On the elevated tee of the 12th hole, enjoy views of up to 50 miles to Merseyside and the Welsh hills before launching your tee shot at a green 350 yards away and a hundred foot below! The closing holes - now in a parkland setting include two par fives, both with water to negotiate and a 443 yard par four finish that demands two long accurate shots to find the well-guarded home green. Mellor & Townscliffe is a seductive course of undervalued character waiting for your visit.

MOTTRAM HALL
38
Mottram Hall Mottram Hall boasts an 18 hole Championship, par 72 parkland/woodland course that opened in 1991. The layout was designed by former PGA Captain and Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, the renowned architect of world famous layouts such as the Brabazon at The Belfry and Slaley Hall in Northumberland.
The host venue for the 2013 European Senior’s PGA Championship; it’s a tree-lined fairways and subtle rolling greens present a challenge to even the most seasonal golfer. The golf course is well established and has matured fully since opening. The front nine is set in attractive parkland, whilst the back nine weaves its way through more demanding woodland, representing a challenge for all standards of golfer. Set in 270 acres of Cheshire’s finest parkland and located one mile from the picturesque village of Prestbury, the tricky, well-guarded greens are broken up into two contrasting circuits of nine. The front nine, with its impressive back-drop of the 18th century hall, gently rolls over meadowland and offers golfers many chances to make a score. The back nine winds through rich woodland and is a much more demanding test of golf, giving you the chance to feel like you’re playing in The Open Championship

With 210 acres of idyllic parkland and water features, the 18-hole Macdonald Portal Championship Golf Course offers a rewarding game to golfers at every level. Three holes which particularly encapsulate the course are the Par 5 3rd hole with its elevated tee, 602 yards challenge and lake fronted green; the picturesque Par 3 14th surrounded by landscaped water features and the dramatic 18th with its cascading waterfall backdrop. Take a well-earned comfort break at the Halfway House, stop for on-course refreshments at weekends and relive your game on the balcony of the Private Members’ Lounge which has a bar, TV and stunning views across the course.
This summer the Macdonald Portal Championship course was delighted to welcome the PGA Europro Tour for the first time. The Europro Tour is a great platform for future starts of the game, and really helped grow the reputation and awareness of the Championship Course at Portal. The winner Richard Mansell won the event with an amazing score of 18 under par after 3 rounds, which was broadcasted on Sky Sports.

Our 9-hole Arderne Course presents a superb challenge for golfers of all levels.
15th Hole, Par 3, “Platt’s Wood” At only 157 yards off the yellow tee this isn’t the longest or most difficult of holes, but it is the sheer height of the tee above the green, possibly 50 feet, that makes it stand out. Club selection is tricky as the ball can be greatly affected by the wind. 18th Hole, Par 5, “Your Round” A great par 5 to finish. A tough drive to a fairway that slopes right to left. Then either a solid lay up or big second can get you close enough for a birdie chance. However, the huge green in front of the impressive clubhouse will always give you pause for thought.

We can also provide a golfer with the best short game practice facilities around. Back in 2008 the club was awarded a grant from Sport England which was used to construct the Chip & Pin Short Game Centre. This consists of two large greens, one that is a synthetic pitching green and the other which can be used to improve your chipping and bunker play.
You will always be well looked after when you visit Poulton Park from when you first arrive at the club to when you travel home, our aim is to make you smile! Signature Hole: Hole 7, Par 4, 417 yards. This is our signature hole and what a hole it is, destroying many a good scorecard. Hitting the fairway is essential if you are to hit the green in regulation. Many play this as a par 5 laying up in to leaving a short pitch over the hidden front ditch onto a green that’s slopes from back to front.

PRESTBURY

Prestbury Golf Club Situated in the beautiful Cheshire countryside just 15 miles south of Manchester on the outskirts of Macclesfield, Prestbury Golf Club is a Harry Colt classic ranked 74th in National Club Golfer magazine’s 2018 list of England’s Top 100 Courses.
Prestbury and Upton Golf Club was founded in 1920 by a few golfing enthusiasts, some of whom were members of Macclesfield Golf Club, who lived in the district and who wished to have an 18 hole course on rather less strenuous terrain. The road from Macclesfield through the old township of Upton was the only one which had no mills or manufacturing premises and, in consequence, it attracted the more prosperous residents. It was from this area that most of the ten or twelve founder members, who largely financed the project, were drawn. Two sites were considered: the first at Fields Farm and the second at Tytherington. Although some viewed the site at Tytherington to be more accessible from Macclesfield, after investigation the Fields farm site was chosen because of its sandy subsoil and generally more pleasing aspects. It lay above the lovely village of Prestbury with beautiful views across a wide expanse of countryside with the Derbyshire hills to the east and, to the north, south and west,

the Lancashire and Yorkshire moors, Mow Cop and Alderley Edge. The surrounding area was unspoilt and the village at that time consisted only of about twenty six houses, with its fair share of hostelries. The inaugural meeting was held in the Stanley Hall on Saturday 21st February 1920 and Mr T. Taylor (later Sir Thomas Taylor) was elected to the Chair. On 23rd October 1920 it was reported that good progress was being made and the Mr Harry S Colt, the well-known golf course architect who had been appointed to design the course, had said that he knew of no other inland course in the country with so much
available sand. Nine holes were ready for play on Easter Saturday, 26th March 1921 and the first competition was held on 23rd April 1921. The official opening of the Club took place on Saturday 26th April 1924 with an open amateur 36 hole medal competition for the Macclesfield Infirmary Trophy presented by the Captain, Thomas Taylor. This trophy is now known as the Taylor Memorial Trophy. At that time the “bogey” score was 77 and the course measured 6,344 yards from the back tees. The course as laid out by Harry Colt was substantially as it is today, though some changes and many improvements have been carried out.

Its fairways are generous, but tree-lined with mature oak, beech and birch; the classic inland course trees dominate, and the picturesque back nine offers unrivalled views of Petty Pool, an old Cheshire mere, which forms a stunning backcloth, particularly on the eleventh and
twelfth holes. The greens, although small by modern standards, are of the quality expected on a championship course. The Clubhouse: Originally built in 1926 with the financial assistance of Brunner Mond and Company, it has recently been refurbished in the bar and lounge areas to provide a more comfortable and relaxing environment to complete the perfect golfing experience. The external style follows that of a traditional Cheshire farmhouse which has stunning views over the course. It is a clubhouse for golfers and the addition of disabled access facilities to cater for all has made it more inclusive.

Designed by famed course architect Donald Steel and opened along with the 156 bedroom hotel in 1989, the layout is undulating, and boasts some of the finest views from any golf course in the North of England. The final 3 holes were redesigned in 2016, resulting in a stern, but very exciting finish to your round. The par 4 17th is a superb

“Stockport is without doubt one of the premier clubs in the North West of England.” Presented in excellent condition throughout the year, Stockport is a challenging test of golf. Each hole provides a different and interesting test playing into well protected and treacherous true running greens. All parts of your game will need to be in good working order to score well. At just under 6,400 yards in length with a par of 71 the course might seem to be a little on the short side for the modern game, yet it has
proved robust enough to withstand the regular onslaughts of powerful fields of professionals and amateurs in five Open Championship Regional Qualifying Tournaments. The club, in conjunction with Wilmslow GC hosts the Cheshire Cat tournament. The Cat is a World Amateur Golf Ranking event and is played annually in July attracting some of the country’s best amateur players.

Vicars Cross Golf Club is a mature tree lined parkland course set in the beautiful Cheshire countryside, close to the city centre of historic Cheshire.

The 18-hole course measures 6,446 yards and has a par of 72 with standard scratch of 71, and with USGA standard greens, offers a true and challenging test of golf. There is a driving range and separate areas for pitching, a full green for chipping and bunker play as well a putting area.
Hole 7. One of the harder par 4’s on the course, this dogleg right carries an abundance of hazards. Trees threaten the drive whilst a stream crossing the fairway and left of the large, undulating green demand an accurate approach.
Our clubhouse provides comfortable and smart surroundings after your round of golf, either for drinks in the lounge or a meal in the dining room.

need for winter tees or mats. How to Find
WILMSLOW
From North: Leave the M56 at junction 6 and bear right onto the A538 towards Wilmslow. Take the first turning on the right at the top of the hill signposted Mobberley and at the T-junction turn right, again signposted Mobberley. Continue for two miles and turn left at the junction onto the B5085 towards Alderley Edge - the ‘Bird in Hand’ pub is on your left. Continue for one mile and turn right at the crossroads onto Warford Lane. The Wilmslow Golf Club is 400yds on the left.
This Cheshire Golf Club was founded in 1889 and is located just outside Wilmslow in the North West of England.
Rated one of the finest inland courses in the North West of England, always in firstclass condition and playable in all but the most extreme of weathers, The Wilmslow Golf Club is a perfect haven from the stress of business and the cares of daily life.
The fine parkland golf course measures over 6,635 yards and the Clubhouse offers a comfortable environment both before and after golf with magnificent views over the course. The Club has hosted major professional tournaments and has been a regional qualifying course for The Open. Whilst the course is a fine test of golf for the low handicapper it also provides an enjoyable experience to golfers of all ability.
Toughest Hole: Hole 8. Par 4, 437 yards (competition tee). S.I. 1 A handsome and strong par 4. The drive is the key. Obviously the road and trees on the left must be avoided but shots are easily lost in the bunker and trees on the right. Crossbunkers threaten many second shots, and the green repels all but the truest of approaches.
Facilities Bar, Restaurant, Trolleys, Lessons, Pro shop, Putting Green, Chipping area and extensive practice ground. Electric buggies available for hire. Visitors personal buggies not permitted Course Information 18 holes, Par 72 • 6635 • 6311 • 5828 H OLE

Greater Manchester The area of Greater Manchester takes in the city itself, but also the surrounding towns of Bolton, Bury, Wigan, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Altrincham, and Oldham. A few short years ago it would have been laughable to suggest that the Manchester area could provide an enjoyable tourism experience, but a cultural renaissance has taken place that has transformed this industrial region into a vibrant centre of culture and the arts. Sophisticated and stylish, Manchester is the original 24-hour party city. From fine dining and chic hotels to cutting-edge clubs and bars and the world’s most progressive music scene, Manchester is always buzzing. The shopping here is legendary. With exclusive independent boutiques in the funky Northern
Quarter, prestigious designer stores lining the handsome King Street and every conceivable type of market, you can shop to suit any budget. The is also the large indoor “Trafford Centre”, which has over 250 shopping outlets, a large food hall and impressive 20 screen cinema complex. The past, the present and the future are intertwined in this city; historical landmarks complement bold, contemporary designs. World-class live events, international sporting competitions, and award-winning museums and galleries make Manchester one of the most entertaining places in the world. Add to this the passion of two top premiership football clubs, and it’s no wonder Manchester is a place like no other.

NORTHENDEN

Northenden Founded in 1913 the club has undergone a variety of changes, most notably as a result of motorway construction in 1970s which necessitated a new course layout and in 2006 the conversion to USGA greens then more recently the construction of a new clubhouse following the destruction of the previous building by fire in 2014. The current clubhouse was officially opened by the Ryder Cup golfer Jamie Donaldson in July 2016. The Course A number of improvements have been made - New tee signage - Changes to some bunkers - Buggy routes - Woodland management programme The condition of the course has prompted many plaudits with the USGA greens in particular generating much positive comment. Membership The club continues to attract new members and is keen to develop its Juniors and Ladies sections. A new programme of junior coaching and competitions is proving popular with “starters and their parents. Trial memberships are available for all golfers. NGC has an excellent schedule of competitions and social golf.

Lancashire Introduction
Lancashire With two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty full of dramatic scenery and quiet lanes, the summer months provide the perfect opportunity to explore Lancashire’s undiscovered countryside. This Royal Duchy is full of ancient castles and picturesque stone-built villages. It’s also home to some of the country’s favourite seaside resorts, including Blackpool - Europe’s biggest and brightest, and the perfect destination for families. Make sure you work up an appetite too, as Lancashire is packed with award winning restaurants and inns with brilliant beer gardens. From Morecambe Bay potted shrimps to Bowland beef, Lancashire’s skilled chefs know how to make the most of the abundant store cupboard on their doorstep. Just six miles from the bright lights of Blackpool,
Lytham and St Annes-on-Sea, Fylde, are worlds apart in both character and atmosphere. The dual seaside towns are nestled along a picturesque stretch of coastline lined with well tended lawns, a boating lake and pretty parks. The rolling sand dunes of St Annes-on-Sea and the Ribble Estuary adjacent to Lytham make a safe haven for more than 250,000 migrating birds that flock here in winter. Some of the world’s most famous golf tournaments take place at Lancashire’s celebrated Links Courses, which stretch along the renowned Lancashire Golf Coast. Luckily for any golf enthusiasts out there, many of the best courses are also open to the public, so you can test your ability with the challenges that links courses are famous for – tricky winds, sand dunes, small, deep bunkers, uneven fairways and thick rough.

Northern hospitality has always been famous and Royal Lytham leads the way. You will be made very welcome. Renowned as a course in which it is hard to scramble a good score, Royal Lytham & St. Annes has just the 174 bunkers peppering the fairways and surrounding the greens. Although the not the longest of Championship courses, it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are essential. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course as it is surrounded by suburban housing and
flanked by a railway line, but it has a charm all of its own. It is a Links Course that is a long way from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on one’s game and was aptly described by Bernard Darwin, the leading golf writer of the thirties, as ‘a beast of a Course, but a just beast’. He went on to say that ‘no one could fail to be impressed by its difficulties, which sets a golfer just about as ruthless as an examination as any Course of my acquaintance’.

ASHTON & LEA

Facilities The early years of the twentieth century saw the beginning of the Ashton & Lea Golf Club; historically that is, for it all began in 1908 as Ashton Golf Club. The name was obviously taken from the area of Preston where the course was located. After the War, the Ashton & Lea Golf Club moved across the brook, past Tudors Farm and established a wooden building on the site of present club house. The present club house was built in 1993/4 and some of the wooden structure is still to be seen to this day The Par 71 course measures 6359 yards from the white tees, 6112 from the yellow’s tees and 5508 from the ladies tees. Ashton & Lea is a fairly flat course and provides a fair test of golf
for players of all abilities, but it is a course that requires the player to think and plot their way round. The course features three tricky par-3’s, most notably the 6th, where out of bounds awaits any errant tee shots leaked to the right. Water plays its part at Ashton & Lea, as seven holes on the back nine are affected by it. Another of the outstanding holes is the short par-4 13th – on the tee the player is faced with either attempting to fly the water that lurks around 210 yards from the tee or play safe and lay-up short leaving a longer second. The approach shot is played downhill to a bowl-shaped green; a par here is readily accepted.

Clitheroe Golf Club was formed in November 1891 and moved to its present site when ninety six acres of land were purchased for £5,000 at Barrow Gardens in 1932. The generosity of the Southworth family made possible the erection of a fine clubhouse building, as well as the establishment of a full 18 hole course rather than the 9 holes originally planned. To the east is Pendle Hill, scene of many witch trials so legend states. Clitheroe is a beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course located in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Designed by the legendary Scottish designer, James Braid, the course has been on its present site since 1932. The course is a challenge to all levels of golfer with a premium on straight driving without being too demanding physically. The views from the course are quite spectacular, with Longridge Fells and Waddington providing the backdrop to Stonyhurst College and Mitton Church. In 2015 the Club hosted its fifth successful Regional Qualifying event for the Open Championship, the Lancashire Ladies Championship and the Northern Seniors
Championship. The Club has also hosted the England Golf County Champions Tournament and next year will welcome the English Stroke Play Championship Northern Qualifying event. Societies: Clitheroe Golf Club welcomes visitors either as Golf Club away days, company days or organised parties. The Club caters for visiting parties Monday to Friday (subject to availability) and can accommodate from small groups to large corporate golf days throughout the year. Contact the Secretary who can provide details of packages available to meet your needs.

Professional golf at Fairhaven started back in 1934 when the course played host to the ‘Penfold’ Tournament. The course is an unusual blend of links and parkland which is relatively flat. This makes it not too strenuous to walk around and allows complete vision of each hole from tee to green. It is consistently maintained and presented to the highest standard, presenting a fair challenge to golfers of all abilities, featuring the ‘risk &
reward’ elements of negotiating the 118 deep revetted bunkers for which Fairhaven is famous. 1st, Par 5. Listed and described in ‘Golf World’ as one of the top ten opening holes in Great Britain & Ireland. In many ways this past Open Championship final qualifying course’s opener is the perfect par 5. 18th, Par 5. A classic finishing hole, it can reward the brave and punish the nervous. For long hitters a good line is over the right edge of the left-hand bunkers.

The greens are small by modern standards, and very well bunkered. This parkland course also has links-like undulating fairways that can fool the eye when it comes to judging distance. Despite its modest length, the course demands a wide variety of golf shots and will make you use just about every club in your bag, with its assortment of different challenges and
approaches to most greens. This formidable little test was officially recognised when it was used as a Final Qualifying course for the 1974, 1979 and 1988 Open Championships held at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. The first hole could start the round off on the wrong foot. This 398-yard gentle dog-leg has an out of bounds on the right, trees to the left and a well-bunkered green with a pond at the rear. Two well-placed bunkers on the right of the fairway will catch any crooked drives. The 13th hole is named “Harold’s Beck” after the club’s famous professional and renowed club maker Harold Beck.

The Club is located within 10 minutes of the M6 motorway. From the South: Leave M6 at junction 34 and turn left at traffic lights. Proceed under the motorway bridge and turn right at traffic lights onto A683. Turn left toward Bay Gateway/A683. At roundabout, take 1st exit. At traffic lights turn right onto Morecambe Road/A589. At roundabout take 2nd exit to stay onto Broadway/A589. At next roundabout take 2nd exit. At the promenade, turn right onto Marie Road East/A5105. Approx. 2.5 miles, Morecambe Golf Club will be situated on your right. Morecambe has long been recognised as the gateway to the English Lake District and a glance from most of our tees will confirm why. The views are simply glorious with the Lakeland mountains and fells stretching out beyond the magnificent bay and providing the best possible back drop for a relaxing round on our challenging course. For many, Morecambe Golf Club is one of Alister Mackenzie’s masterpieces and whilst there are no par fives there are sufficient long par fours to test the very best of golfers. In 2005 Morecambe golf club celebrated its Centennial. Always strong on tradition, the club prides itself on maintaining standards in golf
etiquette whilst presenting a warm and friendly welcome to our highly regarded visitors. Although a seaside course the layout is more of a parkland style. Over recent years, the course has seen many developments to enhance the golfing experience, and the Clubhouse has been continuously upgraded to keep pace with modern requirements. The latest refurbishment was completed in 2019. Unlike many golf clubs, Morecambe makes no distinction between members and visitors in its bar pricing policy, the same low prices are available to both. Come wind or shine our rugged course will provide a stern, but fair golfing test and you can always be assured of a warm welcome.

Turn left into Watling Street Road. Turn right into Duchy Avenue. Turn right into Fulwood Hall Lane. Proceed along Fulwood Hall Lane, past Preston Barracks on the right. Turn left into Preston Golf Club. Preston Golf Club, a must play Lancashire gem, is situated in the Fulwood District of Preston. It was established in 1892 and modified by famous designers such as James Braid, Harry Vardon, Alistair Mackenzie and Sandy Herd over the years. It is a very testing parkland course where water hazards, treelined fairways and about 75 bunkers provide many challenges to play to your handicap.
Signature Hole The 17th is a truly remarkable hole and a real test of the golfing brain. An elevated tee provides excellent views of the first 300 yards.
Added to this are excellent dining and drinking facilities in the Clubhouse, a very well-stocked pro’ shop and a 16 bay, 250 yard flood-lit driving range where you can warm up before beginning your round.
Most golfers can swing their entire bag at the second shot, but “long hitters” be warned, water is looming! Once past the fairway cross bunker there is 198 yards to the green. Lay up or go for it?
With the fairway bending left to right and sloping gently the same way, care must be taken to find the left of the fairway to avoid being blocked out.
TOWNELEY
84
Towneley Golf Course Towneley Golf Course has always been a starting point for many of the golfers in the East Lancashire area. We have had players go on and represent their county and quite a few golfers turn Professional and work in many of the well-established golf clubs in the area.
Towneley Golf Course was originally established in 1932 as 9 hole layout, but was later expanded to the current 5834 yard, par 70 course. Set in mature parkland, Towneley is a good test of golf despite its short length. Well placed hazards and small, fast greens make it a challenge for any ability of golfer. Over the past 10 years our greens staff have improved the course to make it a more challenging test of golf. Certain holes on the front nine have been re-numbered to speed up play. The 3rd now incorporates 2 ponds. Several ditches have been opened to improve drainage, and additional bunkers have been put in. As a result of these changes the course is now in very good condition throughout the year.

Merseyside Introduction
Merseyside
Merseyside comprises of the boroughs of Liverpool, Knowsley, Wirral, Sefton and St Helens, and as the name suggests straddles the River Mersey. The county has been the birthplace of many famous names throughout its history, with Liverpool’s bustling port at its heart Merseyside was always a cosmopolitan place for both artist and artisan. From TV legends Cilla Black and Tom Baker, to sporting heroes like Wayne Rooney and Stephen Gerrard, the area has long been a cultural hotbed and no-one typifies this more than its biggest export: The Beatles. To this day a source for much of the area’s tourism, The Beatles went from humble beginnings at The Cavern Club to global acclaim in the 60’s and many favourite spots for tourists today owe their fame to The Fab Four: the original Cavern was demolished in the 70’s but an exact replica was built in 1984 even using some of the bricks from its predecessor and this houses The
Beatles museum; Strawberry Fields cemetery also lies within the city. Historically Merseyside has grown from a rural community to a bustling urban sprawl, and much of this growth is down to the county’s docks. The city of Liverpool, Birkenhead and Bootle docks were all massively enriched by the slave-trade in the 18th century and by ship-building until more recent times, as well as being the first step on the road to America in the 19th and early 20th centuries: the ill-fated Titanic was constructed in Liverpool’s shipyards. With Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status the area has seen large investment recently, which can only add to its draw for tourists; although a county that can boast the biggest band in history, two of the nation’s biggest football clubs, the world’s largest Anglican cathedral, Tate Liverpool and Wayne Rooney probably needs little help.

ROYAL LIVERPOOL

Royal Liverpool Golf Club The Hoylake links can be, by turns, beautiful, uplifting, awe inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so, and they lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain.
Built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon, which was established just a few years earlier. Robert Chambers and George Morris were commissioned to lay out the original Hoylake course, which was extended to 18 holes in 1871. This was also the year in which the Club was granted its Royal designation thanks to the patronage of His Royal Highness The Duke of Connaught. For the first seven years of its life the land still performed its original function, doubling as a golf course and a horse racing track - indeed, echoes of this heritage can be found today in the names of the first and eighteenth holes, Course and Stand, while the original saddling bell still hangs in the club house. Once the horses had been dispatched to pastures new Hoylake began to take its place in the history of golf in general and of the amateur game in particular.

Contact Details Royal Liverpool Golf Club Meols Drive, Hoylake Wirral CH47 4AL Telephone: 0151 632 7772 bookings@royal-liverpool-golf.com www.royal-liverpool-golf.com How to Find The club is situated on Meols Drive (A540) between Hoylake and West Kirby, 10 minutes from Junction 2 of the M53 and less than 1 hour from Manchester Airport. Leave M53 at Junction 2, follow A551 to Moreton and then A553 to Hoylake. Continue straight ahead at the roundabout in Hoylake (railway station is on the left) and the Club is 300 yards along Meols Drive on the right. Handicaps All visitors are expected to be competent golfers who hold a current Club or Society handicap. As the Links provide a difficult test of golf, maximum handicaps allowed for visitors are: Men - 21, Ladies - 32. Proof of playing ability is required prior to play. Course Information 18 holes, Par 72 • 7350 • 6933 • 6466 • 5896 (74)
Much time has passed since then, but the Hoylake links, despite their at first glance flat and benign appearance, are still very much among the toughest and most demanding tests of golf. What’s more, in recent years, under the guidance of renowned course architect, Donald Steel, the course has been lengthened and upgraded to take on twenty-first century technology and increasingly athletic big hitters. A return to The Open rota after 39 years in 2006 demonstrated that Hoylake could host major events with the new infrastructure in place has ensured that a steady stream of prestigous events have entered the diary. The fabled mighty winds did not blow, but there was no denying that another mighty champion was born... in the shape of one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods. The event was deemed a fantastic success and attracted huge crowds, with the total attendance the second highest in Open history. 2012 saw the first ever playing of the Woman’s British Open at Hoylake. With the London Olympics impacting on the sporting schedule, the event was moved to September and the weather predictably impacted on proceedings as we saw the cancellation of play on the Friday. However, despite the trying conditions, as so often has happened before, a great champion emerged to take the title. Jiyai Shin’s
steely determination and ability to transcend the meteorological challenges resulted in a procession as she defeated the field by 9 shots. In 2014, Rory McIlroy clinched his first Open Championship and third major title with a two-shot victory over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler on a thrilling final day at Hoylake. The Northern Irishman joined Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three of golf’s modern majors by the age of 25. The win means McIlroy now only needs to win the Masters to be able to complete a career Grand Slam. Hoylake will host the Walker Cup this year in our 150th year. It will be fitting way to celebrate our proud history and role in the development of the Amateur game with this fantastic event. Some great new chapters await.

Only a 10-minute drive from both Liverpool City Centre and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, we are ideally located to cater for golfers from across Merseyside, The Wirral and Cheshire who want to play golf in a beautiful setting

We set about a transformation of the club and the facilities in coalition with the City Council. We did so with a clear mission in mind; offering an accessible and affordable golf offering true to the course’s Pay and Play roots but with the kind of facilities and standards expected at a private members’ golf club. In November 2016, long overdue works began on the parkland course itself; improving tees, greens, and fairways with state of the art TORO greenkeeping machinery used across championship courses around the world. We enlisted the expertise of IDG (International Design Group), PGA affiliated Golf Architects with a résumé that comprises numerous first-class golf courses around the world, including the golfing hubs of Dubai, USA, and Asia. We are the first municipal golf course in the UK to undergo this kind of high-level

Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club is a great 18 hole course, famous not only for its welcome to first time visitors, but for its striking panoramic views towards Manchester and beyond. The inward nine holes are particularly demanding (especially on a windy day) with some difficult driving holes through heavily wooded areas. Special care should be taken on the 5th, 11th and 16th holes. The course was founded by long time cricketing pals Tom Mayall and Andrew Molyneux, and celebrated its Centenary back in 2002. Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club has certainly taken giant steps in the quest to produce a
top quality golf course, with excellent facilities and staff to deliver those aspirations. Facilities The developments range from 2 new holes being designed and constructed to enable the club to play 18 holes during a United Utilities pipeline project, a Professional who ‘went back to school’ and achieved full playing privileges on the Senior European Tour and a Manager with almost 30 years County playing experience. All of this adding to the existing assets of a vibrant Club which welcomes Societies, visitors, wedding and anniversary functions and provides a wide range of entertainments.

Exit Jct. 2 from the M53 and follow the Upton By-pass (A5027) onto Frankby Road (B5139) before turning left onto Hillbark Road (B5140). Turn right onto Montgomery Hill (B5141), this road leads onto Caldy Road (B5140). Then turn left onto Croft Drive East and left again onto Links Hey Road.
Playing at Caldy is one of the most rewarding golfing experiences one can enjoy on the beautiful Wirral Peninsula. Golfers from the UK and abroad are always welcome to share the Club’s challenging course, vast Practice Ground and Excellent Clubhouse facilities. From the often breezy cliff top holes, breathtaking views can be enjoyed over the River Dee Estuary towards the three Hilbre Islands and the mountains and coastline of Wales. In contrast, the heathland inner holes offer a more tranquil rural vista towards Thurstaston Hill and adjacent farmland. This glorious combination of links
and inland holes make for a memorable game for golfers of all standards. Hole 3. Par 4, “Sands of Dee”. A superb dog-leg right. The fairway sweeps around two sets of bunkers well placed to catch both short and long hitters. A good tee shot will leave a demanding approach to a well guarded green and a stunning backdrop over the Dee Estuary. Hole 6. Par 4, “Donga”. An extremely challenging hole, the last one along the cliff edge. Rough on the right and out of bounds on the left over the cliff make the tee shot tight.

Formby Golf Club Set in the links between the arable land of the Lancashire plain and the Irish sea, Formby is blessed with the combination of sand dunes and towering pine forest as the backdrop to this great course. The natural terrain ensures that accuracy is always at a premium.
Heather and unforgiving rough protect the well bunkered course and caution is definitely required whether playing off the tee or approaching the quick and true greens. The course voted 77 in the world by golf course architects is challenging, idyllic and an unforgettable course of contrasts. Formby has always supported the highest standards in amateur golf and the Amateur Championship has been held here on four occasions, the most recent being in 2009. The winner then, Matteo Mannassero is the youngest ever winner of the championship at 16 years of age and has now gone onto win 4 professional titles. The Open championship has also used Formby as a qualifying venue in 1924, 1971 and 1996. Hole 12, Par 4, 385 yards (yellow tee) Regarded as one of the best holes on the course. There is a large bunker on the left side of the green and the main trouble is short.

From the Motorway Network at the junction of the M57/M58 take the signposts to Formby. On the A565 from Liverpool turn left at the 2nd roundabout (with BP station) towards Formby Golf Club, Formby Point and Freshfield station. Immediately after the station turn right into Golf Road and enter the club through the automatic barrier.
Formby Golf club prides itself on its course and its hospitality, the “Formby Experience” being the cornerstone of everything we do. The club, founded in 1884, is steeped in history and rightly proud of its place at the top of the golfing globe. Formby upholds the highest standards of the amateur game, the course testing the very best amateur talent. It has held 4 Amateur championships, 5 English Amateur championships, 4 Brabazon trophies, numerous R&A championships for boys, Mid-Amateur and Senior events and has hosted many EGU and County championships. The iconic club house which was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1901 is a fine example of architecture of the period. The snooker room is home to two snooker tables dating back to 1903 and the recently refurbished club room and dining room provide incredible panoramic, elevated views across the course. Visitors can also stay here at the club using the Dormy accommodation which is an integral part of the clubhouse and allows access to the course at weekends with reserved tee times.
Our clubhouse offers history of our glorious past, comfortable surroundings to while away a few hours, or simply a place to relax pre or post round. Our Hall Bar, with large screen television, showing major sporting events, is one area to enjoy and our Golf Lounge with its homely, yet comfortable surroundings overlooking the 18th hole, is extremely popular with members and visitors alike, offering snacks, real ales, and fine wines, all available for your enjoyment. Upstairs we have our Club room, steeped in history, yet thanks to our recent refurbishment, feels light and fresh, and our Dining Room is the perfect way to complete your day here at Formby, offering carefully and lovingly crafted cuisine by our team of chefs with what can only be described as “stunning” views over what is without question one of the world’s best links courses. The golf club is steeped in history and folklore and this is visible around the clubhouse, from our famous Hippo’s head, gifted by the widow of a member, which spent the war kidnapped on a navy frigate, to the clock tower gifted to the club by Charles Bruce Ismay, the then Chairman of the White Star Line of Titanic fame.

Hewn from marshland, six miles south of Southport and at the heart of England’s Golf Coast, Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa features a fine 18-hole course and a challenging 9-hole course which is ideal for experienced golfers and beginners alike. The 18-hole course hosted two events on the Challenge Tour, the 2004 ADT English Seniors’ Open, and in 2009 staged its first EuroPro Tour event. Formby Hall’s 18hole lay-out features a series of testing holes protected by water and well-placed-bunkers. Water, in fact, can be found on 16 out of the 18 holes.
The 16th is a picturesque yet extremely testing par 3, with a 170-yard carry over water, and 6 well placed greenside bunkers waiting to catch any errant tee shot leaves very little margin for error, and a Par-3 on the card is true reward for selecting the right club. The Resort enjoyed a £15 million development in 2008 which has resulted in the completion of a stylish new 4-star 62-bedroom hotel and luxury Spa.

Founded in 1877, Haydock Park Golf Club is a well-established golf course situated near Haydock Park Racecourse. It is a mature parkland course of just over 6,000 yards. The course was designed by the famous golf course architect James Braid. Haydock Park is one of the North West’s premier golf clubs; it’s tree-lined fairways and well bunkered greens make scoring well a real challenge, for both high and low handicappers. We welome visitors every day during the week except Tuesdays (Ladies Only) and weekends. The Club is an excellent friendly venue for a day’s golf offering superb
catering and clubhouse decor. Being very convenient to the M6/A580 junction, the Club is readily accessible from all directions. Signature Hole Rated by many members as the feature hole on the course, the par 4, 6th has a daunting drive down a funnel of trees from a magnificent three tiered tee. With out of bounds all the way down the right and two bunkers placed perfectly to catch the slightest fade a drive to the left center is ideal as this fairway also slopes from left to right. A very large and high cross bunker 29 yards from the green makes distance judgement difficult.

A true championship links, overhauled in the 1960’s by renowned architect Fred Hawtree, Hillside is regarded as probably the finest links golf course not to have hosted the Open Championship. The club has a track record of staging some of the highest profile professional and amateur tournaments including the 2019 British Masters, hosted by local hero and Hillside Life Member Tommy Fleetwood. The layout of the course is balanced in two halves with the opening holes heading westward along flat ground beside the railway line. The flatter nine holes of the opening half whet the golfer’s appetite for the contrast that awaits on second nine. Here you will find valleyed corridors through some of the highest
and wildest dunes found anywhere. Each hole occupying its own unique site never shared with another. Double Open Champion Australian Greg Norman graciously wrote an unsolicited note to the Club after playing in the PGA tournament at Hillside in 1982 stating the: ‘The back nine holes are the Best in Britain.’ He was later to say that in his view the Hillside course was ‘…second only to Augusta’. Jack Nicklaus described the course as ‘…a wild looking links’ and added that ‘…within the second nine are some of my favourite holes.’ Hillside remains a private members golf club with a welcoming inclusive philosophy, attracting visitors from around the world.

Operated by Green Circle Estates operators of several North West Golf Clubs including Allerton Manor Golf Club in South Liverpool.
The clubhouse is a stylish, luxurious bar and kitchen with a stunning terrace overlooking the 18th hole. Live sports are shown on multiple TV screens so guests can enjoy watching rugby, football, tennis and even live golf. Freshly made pizzas are on the menu alongside sandwiches, burgers and steaks.

This year on 23rd & 24th June, we are host to Regional Qualifying for the 2019 Open Championship. You are welcome to come and watch: this is possibly your chance to see at close quarters a future Open Champion in the making!! The links are positioned alongside the Mersey estuary and give magnificent views over the river towards Snowdon and North Wales. Following the laying out of the original 9 holes, the course underwent substantial redesign first by James Braid in 1921 and secondly by CK Cotton in 1961
and over time the course has been further improved to reflect modern demands. Donald Steel wrote of our course: “Only in Britain can one savour the true flavour of seaside golf, of which the West Lancashire is a perfect example”. He went on to say of the Club House and the view from the balcony: “On summer evenings as the sun casts its shadows on the links, the shipping slips quietly by on the Mersey and there is time to reflect on the distant beauty, the realisation occurs that the West Lancashire enjoys the best of all worlds”.

Cumbria The County of Cumbria includes the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and part of North Lancashire. Very few places in Britain can hope to compete with the undeniable beauty and romance offered by the county of Cumbria. England’s second largest county – and its least populated – has a sense of wonder unequalled elsewhere thanks to its inspirational landscape, which can smile, brood or blaze depending on the season. Much of its appeal stems from the magnificent Lake District National Park and a range of steely mountains that stand guard over a veritable treasure trove of crowd-pleasing attractions. Cumbria is especially famous as the home of Beatrix Potter and Lake District has been the
inspiration for generations of poets, the most famous of which is Wordsworth. This unique County has something to suit everybody’s taste - great outdoor pursuits including waters sports, climbing, horse riding, walking, heritage sites, attractions, gardens and stunning coastal scenery. This dazzling region covering almost 900 square miles contains no less than 16 ‘great’ lakes, as well as tarns, glacier-gouged valleys, chocolate-box villages – and even some marvellous beaches. It also boasts England’s five highest mountains and the country’s deepest lake. Cumbria and the Lake District is one of the great golfing areas of England, offering quality courses for the discriminating golfer in magnificent settings.

CARLISLE
114
Carlisle Golf Club Carlisle Golf Club was founded in 1908 with the original layout being designed by Mr Theodore Moon. The course was then remodelled after the second world war by Mr Philip Mackenzie Ross.
The club is less than ½ a mile from M6 J43. It is situated amongst mature trees in gently undulating parkland and is one of the most attractive courses in northern England providing a test for any golfer. The R & A brought Regional Qualifying to Carlisle on 6 occasions commencing 1996, the first Club in Cumbria to be so honoured. The English Golf Union also holds the Club in high esteem bringing the English Seniors Championship to Carlisle in 2010. Many other Championships, Amateur & Professional, have been held over the 100 years history of the Club. The course is Par 71 (73 for Ladies) with tree lined fairways and many memorable holes. Many regard Carlisle as one of, if not the finest inland course in the North of England. The course presents a tough challenge to the proficient golfer whilst not being fiendishly difficult for the higher handicappers. The status of the Course is augmented by a reputation for having magnificent greens and well manicured fairways.

SILLOTH ON SOLWAY

Silloth on Solway Golf Club Welcome to Silloth on Solway Golf Club, the best golf course to play in Britain and Ireland for under ÂŁ100
Since David Grant laid Silloth golf course out in 1892 over the linksland west of the docks it has been a key tourist attraction. Over the years the course has evolved, with contributions from two great classic designers Dr Alister MacKenzie and Willie Park Junior. A number of blind holes still remain, architecturally-incorrect in the modern era, but a source of uncertainty, surprise and occasional delight to successive generations of members and visitors. Some of the original sandy wastes remain as heroic hazards, but the course is mostly clad in mature dune flora that is ideal for presenting the great challenge of links golf. Three holes are typical. The elevated tee on the par 3 Ninth looks down on a small island green with a steep fall to the right, protected to the front and side by an array of deep bunkers that demand an accurate shot from anything between a wedge and three iron, depending on the wind. Silloth’s signature hole is the par 5 Thirteenth, with a drive over gorse to a deceptively wide fairway. A tight second through a narrow gully, into the prevailing wind, must negotiate an angled slope that deflects all but the most

The final hole requires an accurate drive on to an angled fairway, usually with the help of the prevailing wind, before a long approach in to the final green under the critical gaze of those safely ensconced in the Nineteenth Hole. The fairways are covered in the springiest of Cumbrian turf, inviting crisp iron shots and courageous woods. The undulating fairways meander through the dunes offering a true test of links golf to those who visit. Much praise has been bestowed on this golf course located in Silloth, Wigton, Cumbria. Writing about his first visit to the course in 1925, the great golf writer Bernard Darwin wrote: “I never more violently fell in love with a course at first sight.”
Golfer magazine voted it the ‘Best Course in Britain and Ireland under £60’. It also appears in the Planetgolf.com top 100 golf courses in the world. Aberdovey is without doubt a living testament to the unique characteristics of links golf. Playing golf here is much more than just a social and sporting activity. It can be considered a journey where you can lose yourself in
the beauty of the game nurtured within the beauty of the landscape. Even if you are playing poorly - you will still be uplifted and energised by the golf experience. Three of the legendary architects of the early 20thC; Colt, Braid & Fowler have all had a hand in shaping Aberdovey as it stands today. However, it is the untamed elements of the natural rolling links that has had the greatest role in creating the course. Re-built in 1998, we have a large, modern clubhouse for the enjoyment of our Members and visitors.

“A spectacularly small peninsula where tees and greens sit perched precariously on rocky outcrops.” A 27 hole championship golf course, including the world-famous ‘Point’ - 9 ‘risk and reward’ holes on a spectacularly small peninsula where tees and greens sit perched precariously on rocky outcrops, often close to the waters’ edge and small coves and bays tantalisingly cut their way into the fairways. This is Nefyn and District Golf Club, a must-play course on the northwest coast of Wales that every year plays host to golfers from all over the world. But don’t just come to play the ‘Point’. Nefyn’s other 18 holes offer the golfer an equally challenging test of golf with some testing opening par 4s and par 3s that can play 9 iron or 5 wood depending on the prevailing conditions! And all of this set against the backdrop of the Snowdonia range.
Nefyn prides itself on offering visiting golfers a quality experience both on and off the course, so after the round they can enjoy the comfortable surroundings of the clubhouse with the same stunning views, maybe sometimes even as far away as Ireland. Naturally, we hope they’ll also stay and sample our wide menu selection along with the excellent beers and wines on offer. Come and ‘Play and Stay’, because at Nefyn we’re happy to arrange your golf and accommodation in local hotels where you’re also guaranteed a warm welcome and quality service. North Wales Golf Club North Wales Golf Club is a true Championship Links course situated in the sunny seaside town of Llandudno with excellent views over the Conwy estuary to Anglesey and the Snowdonia Mountain range. We are sure you will find the course invigorating and challenging offering an enjoyable experience for all levels of player.
Llandudno --”the Queen of the Welsh resorts”-has two popular beaches appropriately named the North and West Shores. The golfer who wants to enjoy his or her golf could do no better than come to play the North Wales Golf Course. The visitor will find the North Wales Club a true links course situated on the Penmorfa Beach popularly known as the West Shore.
The course is of Championship standard hosting the Welsh Team Championships in 1995. It is not only a trial of ability but allows the golfer to relax and enjoy the exhilarating air and the magnificent scenery of the North Wales coast. As the course runs along the coast there is an ever changing vista. On the outward holes can be seen the Vardre where many a battle was
fought before and during the erection of Conwy Castle in the 12th Century. Then the Eryri Snowdownia mountains loom over Conwy. Then across the sea to Ynys Mon - the island of Anglesey and Puffin island. Sweeping further right and visible at the turn towards home is the Great Orme. For the golfer who comes to Llandudno to play golf, few other places could surpass this for relaxation and enjoyment while playing golf. The course was founded in 1894 by Tancred D Cummins, from Bowden in Cheshire, who was a prominent Manchester cotton businessman. He first saw the land at Christmas in 1893. At that time it was composed of sand hills and valleys running West to East formed by the prevailing Westerly winds, which still blow, as many a golfer has found to his cost. In the summer of 1894 Mr Cummins watched the Amateur Championships held at Hoylake where Mr John Ball the first Englishman to win The Open in 1890 defeated Mr More-Ferguson by one hole. Following his triumph Mr Ball visited Llandudno with the founder the following week. John Ball’s association with the club is held in

high regard by the members and a putter he donated to the Club is still displayed in the Club House and a competition held is his honour annually. John Ball went on to great triumphs being the youngest player ever to win the Open Championship which he did at Prestwick in 1890. Another member of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Mr Harold H Hilton, Open Champion in 1892 and 1897, was an associate of Mr Cummins the founder member. Mr Hilton visited the course and gave valuable advice and suggestions on the layout of the course. Another connection with the Royal Liverpool Course is found in the Club badge which includes the words “far and sure”, which is taken from the Hoylake Club Moto. John Ball won the Amateur Championship on eight occasions and Harold H Hilton was Champion three times. Following the completion of the course , Mr Cummins named each hole. The par 3 13th, a beautiful short hole playing directly into the prevailing wind he named “Hades”. The Church Commissioners from whom he purchased the
land, requested that the name be changed, as it was inappropriate to have such a name when the land had connections with the church. Mr Cummins refused the request. In order to alleviate their displeasure, he named the 18th “Paradise”. These two names remain to this day. Mr Cummins was to be the Club Captain and Club Secretary for 38 years from 1894 to 1933. The course changed during its formative years because of housing development on the surrounding land. Since those days there has been little change. The biggest change was some 20 years ago when the green of a delightful short hole, “The Sahara” was lost through coast erosion. There have been recent additions to the course facilities with the addition of a practice ground and a practice pitching area. The qualifying round of the Penfold competition was held on this course during the period 1952-54. When the great Henry Cotton won the event in 1954, he referred to the North Wales Course at a press interview which followed his success, as “a gem”.

The prevailing south west winds are a feature of the course and the low punched shot is often a very useful addition to the player’s repertoire.
The clubhouse has extensive members’ and visitors’ facilities including a lounge bar and full catering. The course features in the Welsh Golfing Union calendar and their national championships are held here at the club. Visitors enjoy the challenge of playing a links championship course as well as the excellent social facilities. Hole 15 is the signature hole with its low rambling dunes adjoining the flat fairway. Email: golf@sunsetbeachclub.com Tel: +34 952 579 400 Ext. 7822 La Cala Golf La Cala boasts three superb championship courses nestled in the Mijas hills, designed by renowned golf course architect, Cabell Robinson. Campo Asia is the oldest of the three courses, and the one most respected by professionals, as it is narrow and short, with four par 5 holes that demand a cool head and strategic thinking. The greens have recently been upgraded to Bermuda grass in a bid to improve sustainability
and year-round conditioning. Every bunker has also been fully renovated on Cabell B. Robinson’s iconic layout, ensuring pristine playing conditions. Campo America has recently been renovated, taking La Cala’s most popular course to a new level, including Visage GPS system fitted into the buggies. La Cala Resort’s Premium course’s wide linked fairways and relatively few bunkers make it a slightly easier driving course, but don’t let this fool you! The hilly topography requires a lot of carry across steep brushcovered side slopes, while the small raised greens demand precise club selection to hit the mark. Campo Europa is set on flatter terrain, with generous fairways, and slightly larger greens. This picturesque course is notable for one main bridge and four smaller bridges across the River Ojén, which features in eight holes, and cuts across three fairways. Water hazards guard the 3rd and 14th greens, to add an extra challenge to even the most seasoned golfer. More information at www.lacala.com.
